Abstract
INTRODUCTION Hypertension and rising serum uric acid (sUA) played a pivotal role in the development of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). This study investigates the interactive effect of sUA and hypertension on CKD and identifies the optimal threshold of sUA among individuals with and without hypertension in the Chinese community population. MATERIALS AND METHODS The study included 4180 individuals aged 45-85 years, derived from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) between 2011 and 2015. Additionally, a hospital-based study enrolled subjects in the Department of Nephrology at Zhongshan Hospital, China from January 1, 2019, to December 31, 2021. The interaction effect analysis were used to assess the impact of sUA and hypertension on CKD. We also compared the distribution of sUA and the CKD risk in community populations, distinguishing between those with and without hypertension. For the hospital-based population, kidney injury was marked by a KIM-1 positive area. RESULTS Our results indicate a higher prevalence of CKD in the community population with hypertension (10.2% vs. 3.9%, p < .001). A significant additive synergistic effects of the sUA and hypertension on the CKD risk were found. When the sUA level was < 4.55 mg/dL in the hypertensive population and < 5.58 mg/dL in the non-hypertensive population, the risk of CKD was comparable (p = .809). In the propensity score matched (PSM) population, the result remained roughly constant. CONCLUSION Therefore, even moderate levels of sUA was associated with a higher risk of CKD in middle-aged hypertensive patients, who warrant stricter sUA control.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the relationship between the serum uric acid to creatinine (UA/Cr) ratio and the prevalence of hypertension. METHODS In this cross-sectional study, we included 8571 individuals from the China Health and Nutrition Survey. Logistic regression analysis and restricted cubic spline (RCS) were used to analyze the relationship between the UA/Cr ratio and hypertension. RESULTS Compared with individuals without hypertension, individuals with hypertension had higher UA/Cr ratios. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that a higher UA/Cr ratio was closely related to a higher risk of hypertension (as a continuous variable, OR: 1.054, 95% CI: 1.014-1.095, p = 0.007; as a categorical variable, Q3 vs. Q1, OR: 1.183, 95% CI: 1.011-1.384, p = 0.035; Q4 vs. Q1, OR: 1.347, 95% CI: 1.146-1.582, p < 0.001). Subgroup analysis revealed that the correlation between the UA/Cr ratio and hypertension risk was stable in all subgroups except for the subgroup with diabetes and the subgroup with a BMI ≥ 28 kg/m2 (p < 0.05). Sensitivity analysis confirmed the robustness of the relationship between a higher UA/Cr ratio and a higher risk of hypertension (p < 0.05). The RCS showed that the UA/Cr ratio was nonlinearly related to hypertension risk. Further threshold effect showed that only a UA/Cr ratio less than 5.0 was related to hypertension risk (OR: 1.178, 95% CI: 1.086-1.278, p < 0.001), and the 2-piecewise linear regression model was superior to the 1-line linear regression model (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION The UA/Cr ratio was associated with the prevalence of hypertension.

Abstract
AIMS To determine the association between: (i) baseline serum uric acid (SUA) level and (ii) SUA changes over time, and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) resolution. MATERIALS AND METHODS A retrospective cohort study, comprising 38 483 subjects aged <40 years with pre-existing NAFLD, was undertaken. The effects of SUA changes over time were studied in 25 266 subjects. Participants underwent a health examination between 2011 and 2019, and at least one follow-up liver ultrasonography scan up to December 2020. Exposures included baseline SUA level and SUA changes between baseline and subsequent visits, categorized into quintiles. The reference group was the third quintile (Q3) containing zero change. The primary endpoint was resolution of NAFLD. RESULTS During a median follow-up of 4 years, low baseline SUA level and decreases in SUA levels over time were independently associated with NAFLD resolution (p for trend <0.001). Using SUA as a continuous variable, the likelihood of NAFLD resolution was increased by 10% and 13% in men and women, respectively, per 1-mg/dL decrease in SUA. In a time-dependent model with changes in SUA treated as a time-varying covariate, adjusted hazard ratios (95% confidence intervals) for NAFLD resolution comparing Q1 (highest decrease) and Q2 (slight decrease) to Q3 (reference) were 1.63 (1.49-1.78) and 1.23 (1.11-1.35) in men and 1.78 (1.49-2.12) and 1.18 (0.95-1.46) in women, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Low baseline SUA levels and a decrease in SUA levels over time were both associated with NAFLD resolution in young adults.

Abstract
Purpose The association between serum uric acid (SUA) and atrial fibrillation (AF) has been widely focused on and studied in recent years. However, the exact association between SUA and AF is unclear, and the effect of gender on the association between SUA levels and AF has been controversial. This study aimed to investigate the association between SUA levels and non-valvular AF (NVAF) and the potential effect of gender on it. Patients and Methods A total of 866 NVAF patients (463 males, age 69.44 ± 8.07 years) and 646 sex-matched control patients in sinus rhythm, with no history of arrhythmia were included in this study. t-test, ANOVA, and chi-square test were used for baseline data analysis. The receiver operating characteristic curve, logistic regression and Pearson correlation analysis were used for correlation analysis. Results Compared to controls, NVAF patients exhibited higher SUA (P<0.001). After adjusting for confounders of NVAF, SUA remained significantly associated with NVAF, regardless of gender (OR= 1.31, 95% CI 1.18-1.43, P<0.001). SUA demonstrated higher predictability and sensitivity in predicting the occurrence of female NVAF compared to male (area under the curve was 0.68 (95% CI 0.64-0.72, P<0.001), sensitivity 87.3%), with the optimal cut-off point identified as 5.72 mg/dL. Furthermore, SUA levels correlated with APOA1, Scr and NT-proBNP in NVAF patients. SUA levels varied significantly among NVAF subtypes. Conclusion High SUA levels were independently associated with NVAF, regardless of gender. SUA exhibited higher predictability and sensitivity in predicting the occurrence of NVAF in females compared to males. High SUA levels may affect other NVAF-related factors and participate in the pathophysiological process of NVAF.

Abstract
Bariatric surgery (BS) has been a significant means of reducing weight in obese individuals. The metabolic changes after bariatric surgery are crucial as they extend its advantages beyond weight loss. As its name implies, "metabolic surgery" also addresses obesity-related metabolic concerns. Bariatric surgery has always been associated with lessened serum uric acid (SUA) levels. In this review, we examined current studies to understand how surgical therapies impact serum uric acid levels. Strongly minded on the extent and timing of changes in the level of serum uric acid after bariatric surgeries. We conducted a comprehensive search for relevant current studies in PubMed, Google Scholar, JAMA, and the Cochrane Library until February 1, 2024. We aimed to analyze the metabolic advantages of bariatric surgery, focusing on its function in treating hyperuricemia and lowering the risk of associated disorders. Our review elaborates on factors contributing to decreased serum uric acid levels after bariatric surgery, such as alterations in renal function, insulin sensitivity, and inflammatory markers.

Abstract
Background Right cardiac chamber remodeling is widespread in patients with connective tissue disease (CTD). Serum uric acid (SUA) is considered a potential independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease, and elevated SUA levels are often observed in patients with CTD. The correlation between SUA levels and right cardiac chamber remodeling remains unclear. This study investigated the association of SUA with right cardiac chamber remodeling as assessed by cardiac magnetic resonance feature-tracking (CMR-FT) in CTD patients. Methods and results In this cross-sectional study, a total of 104 CTD patients and 52 age- and sex-matched controls were consecutively recruited. All individuals underwent CMR imaging, and their SUA levels were recorded. The patients were divided into three subgroups based on the tertiles of SUA level in the present study. CMR-FT was used to evaluate the right atrial (RA) longitudinal strain and strain rate parameters as well as right ventricular (RV) global systolic peak strain and strain rate in longitudinal and circumferential directions for each subject. Univariable and multivariable linear regression analyses were used to explore the association of SUA with RV and RA strain parameters. Compared with the controls, the CTD patients showed significantly higher SUA levels but a lower RV global circumferential strain (GCS) and RA phasic strain parameters (all p < 0.05), except the RA booster strain rate. RV GCS remained impaired even in CTD patients with preserved RV ejection fraction. Among subgroups, the patients in the third tertile had significantly impaired RV longitudinal strain (GLS), RV GCS, and RA reservoir and conduit strain compared with those in the first tertile (all p < 0.05). The SUA levels were negatively correlated with RV GLS and RV GCS as well as with RA reservoir and conduit strain and strain rates (the absolute values of β were 0.250 to 0.293, all P < 0.05). In the multivariable linear regression analysis, the SUA level was still an independent determinant of RA conduit strain (β = -0.212, P = 0.035) and RV GCS (β = 0.207, P = 0.019). Conclusion SUA may be a potential risk factor of right cardiac chamber remodeling and is independently associated with impaired RA conduit strain and RV GCS in CTD patients.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to explore the sex difference and effects of blood pressure (BP) on the relationship between serum uric acid (SUA) and carotid plaque in patients with coronary heart disease (CHD). This large multicenter retrospective study included 12099 patients with CHD (aged 35-75 years) between January 1, 2014 and September 30, 2020. Patients were divided into three groups according to systolic BP (SBP) and diastolic BP (DBP), and the SUA levels in males and females were converted into three groups. Logistic regression was used to analyze the influence of sex and BP on the relationship between SUA levels and carotid plaque in patients with CHD. In the model of male BP subgroups, using the BP of group A (normal with SBP <120 mmHg and DBP <80 mmHg) as a reference, SUA levels were significantly correlated with the occurrence of carotid plaque under different BP states (P < .001). In contrast, in the model of female BP subgroups, most of these correlations were not statistically significant. Our study showed that SUA levels were significantly associated with carotid plaque occurrence in males with CHD, which remained significant across different BP states.

Objectives Serum uric acid (UA) levels are associated with many systemic diseases. A previous study confirmed the association between high serum uric acid levels and poor prognosis of in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) patients. This study aimed to explore the correlation between serum uric acid levels and reproductive outcomes in patients without PCOS. Methods A retrospective study that included 1057 patients who underwent pre-implantation genetic testing for monogenic disorders (PGT-M) treatment from January 2013 to December 2020 was conducted. The study population was further divided into 3 groups according to serum UA levels: the ≤250 μmol/L group, the 251-360 μmol/L group, and the >360 μmol/L group. The controlled ovarian hyperstimulation (COH) treatment outcomes, embryonic treatment outcomes and pregnancy outcomes of the first frozen embryo transfer (FET) cycle were compared among groups. Multivariable linear regression and binary regression were applied to detect the association between IVF outcomes and serum uric acid levels. Results The number of retrieved oocytes, fertilization rate, viable embryo rate, blastocyst formation rate and euploid rate were not associated with serum uric acid levels. The mature oocyte rate was negatively correlated with serum uric acid levels. The pregnancy outcomes of the first FET cycle were also not associated with serum uric acid levels. After adjustment for BMI, the perinatal outcomes were not associated with serum uric acid levels. Conclusion IVF treatment outcomes were not associated with serum uric acid levels in patients without PCOS.

Abstract
Several studies have reported that the atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) is associated with serum uric acid (SUA) in healthy middle-aged men, kidney transplant patients, and diabetic patients. We assessed the relationship between AIP and SUA in patients with untreated essential hypertension (EH) in China. In the cross-sectional study, we evaluated 5003 patients with untreated EH in China; 1490 were assigned to the hyperuricemia (HUA) group and 3513 to the normouricemia (non-HUA) group according to the diagnostic criteria of HUA (SUA level≥6 mg/dL in females and ≥7 mg/dL in males). A higher AIP level was found in the HUA group (P < .001), and AIP was positively and independently correlated with SUA after adjusting for statistically significant variables (β = .204, P < .001). Moreover, multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that the AIP was closely and independently related to HUA after adjusting for confounders (odds ratio [OR]: 11.980, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 3.186-45.047, P < .001). Our findings suggested that the AIP was positively and independently associated with SUA, and elevated AIP might be a significant risk factor for HUA in patients with untreated EH in China.

Abstract
Hyperuricemia is associated with kidney function decline (KFD), although whether hyperuricemia directly causes nephrotoxicity or is indirectly mediated by systemic arterial stiffening remains unclear. We examined the detailed relationship of serum uric acid (SUA) with KFD and potential mediation by arterial stiffness. Study population was 27,648 urban residents with an estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) of ≥60 mL/min/1.73 m2 at baseline, and they participated in a median of three consecutive annual health examinations. Arterial stiffness was assessed using cardio-ankle vascular index (CAVI). KFD was defined as a decrease in eGFR to below 60. Multivariate analysis showed an association between baseline SUA and CAVI independent of eGFR. During the study period, 6.6% of participants developed KFD. Stratified analysis revealed a linear relationship between the contribution of CAVI or SUA and KFD. ROC analysis determined a cutoff CAVI of 8.0 (males) or 7.9 (females) and a cutoff SUA of 6.3 (males) or 4.5 mg/dL (females) for predicting KFD. The linkage between SUA and CAVI was associated with a greater increase in the hazard ratio for KFD with an increase in SUA. CAVI showed the mediating effect on the relationship of SUA with KFD after an adjustment for confounders. SUA was associated positively with CAVI-mediated KFD. Further studies should verify whether intensive SUA-lowering treatment prevents KFD via improving vascular function.

Abstract
Involvement of the complement system is key to the pathogenesis of antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated renal vasculitis, but immunometabolic implications, especially on serum uric acid (UA) levels, still need to be elucidated. A total of 34 patients with biopsy-proven ANCA-associated renal vasculitis between 2015 and 2020 were retrospectively enrolled. Serum UA levels were correlated with clinical and histopathological characteristics, separated for critically ill (CI, n = 19), myeloperoxidase (MPO)-ANCA (n = 21) and proteinase 3 (PR3)-ANCA (n = 13) subgroups. We here identified inverse correlations of serum UA levels and complement C3 levels in the total cohort (p = 0.005) and the CI subgroup (p < 0.001). Intrarenal complement C4d deposition in venules correlated with serum UA levels in the total cohort (p = 0.007) and in the CI subgroup (p = 0.016). Significant associations of serum UA levels and tubulitis in areas of scarred cortex (t-IFTA) were identified in the total cohort (p = 0.008), and both subgroups of CI (p = 0.034) and MPO-ANCA (p = 0.029). In PR3-ANCA, interstitial fibrosis (ci) was observed as the strongest association with serum UA levels (p = 0.022). Our observations broaden our current understanding of contributory metabolic factors that influence the initial disease course in ANCA-associated renal vasculitis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hyperuricemia has been linked to various health conditions. However, the relationship between uric acid (UA) levels and lung function remains debated. METHODS In a cross-sectional study of 6750 participants aged 20-69 from NHANES, we assessed UA levels and lung function (FVC and FEV1). We conducted regression analyses while adjusting for potential confounders. RESULTS After accounting for factors like age, sex, BMI, smoking, and more, we found a negative association between UA FVC and FEV1. Specifically, for every 0.1 mg/dL increase in UA, FEV1 decreased by 15.265 mL, and FVC decreased by 24.46 mL. No association was observed with FEV1/FVC. Subgroup analyses revealed similar negative correlations among various groups, particularly in non-Hispanic Black females under 60. CONCLUSION Serum UA levels are inversely associated with FEV1 and FVC in the American population, with a notable impact on non-Hispanic Black females under 60.

Abstract
Introduction Uric acid is produced during the metabolism of nucleotide and adenosine triphosphate and contains the final product of human purine metabolism. It acts both as an antioxidant and pro-inflammatory marker and has a positive association with visceral fat in overweight subjects. The aim of the present study is to find an association of uric acid level with certain anthropometric parameters in subjects having type 2 diabetes. Materials and Methods The study included 124 urban drug-naive diabetic Indian subjects above 18 years of age from the general population of the city of North India. Uric acid concentrations were estimated by the uricase method. Fasting plasma glucose (FPG) concentrations were estimated by the glucose oxidase-peroxidase method. Anthropometric measurements and information on lifestyle factors and disease history were collected through in-person meeting. Results All participants of the study subjects had a body mass index (BMI) of more than 23.5. BMI, waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), waist-to-height ratio, waist circumference, neck circumference, weight, age, sagittal abdominal diameter (SAD), skinfold thickness, and body roundness index were positively correlated with the serum uric acid level. The correlation of weight, BMI, SAD, and WHR was statistically significant. Conclusion We found that serum uric acid level increases as body fat content increases. Statistical data show remarkable results for a significant correlation of uric acid level with BMI, WHR, SAD, and FPG. Hypertrophy occurs as a result of inflammatory processes and oxidative stress when the supply of energy starts to exceed the storage capacity of adipocytes, as a result, adipokines such as interleukin (IL)-1, IL-6, and tumor-necrosis factor-alpha are released more frequently which lead to low-grade chronic inflammation. Uric acid levels are much lean toward visceral obesity than overall body fat content.

Abstract
Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a progressive lethal disease, which is characterized by abnormal vascular remodeling and persistently elevated pulmonary artery pressure, eventually leading to right heart failure and even death. Although great progress has been made in treating PH, the mortality rate remains high. Metabolic disorders are one of the important hallmarks of PH. Obesity, lipids, glucose tolerance and insulin resistance are risk factors for numerous cardiovascular diseases and are often accompanied by a considerable increase in serum uric acid (SUA) concentrations. Uric acid (UA) is the end product of purine nucleotide metabolism and is closely related to cardiovascular diseases including PH. Hyperuricemia promotes the development and progression of PH through endothelial dysfunction, oxidative stress, inflammatory responses and activation of the renin‑angiotensin system. In the present review, the advancements in knowledge about UA metabolism and PH, and the current understanding of the potential interactions and mechanisms of SUA in PH were systematically summarized, which may provide new insights into the pathogenesis of PH.

Abstract
Introduction The study findings investigated uric acid reference values and their association with a cluster of cardiometabolic risk factors among adolescents using the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES). Methods A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted using the KNHANES database from 2016 to 2018, involving a total of 2,462 participants aged between 10 and 18 years. Based on age- and sex-specific percentile curves for serum uric acid (SUA) levels from the KNHANES, we examined the correlation between cardiometabolic risk factors and serum uric acid levels. Results The percentile values of SUA varied with sex and age. In male subjects, SUA levels tended to increase from 10 to 14 years of age and plateaued after 14 years of age. Moreover, the overall uric acid level in females was found to be lower than that in males; the levels tended to increase at approximately 10 to 12 years old but were relatively consistent according to age. Mean uric acid levels increased according to obesity status in both males and females. However, correlation analysis revealed that SUA levels were associated with several metabolic risks even after adjusting for obesity. The detailed metabolic syndrome (MetS) components that were observed to be associated with an increase in uric acid levels were different between males and females, but overall, high uric acid levels increased MetS risk. Additionally, a significant increase in MetS-related odds ratio (OR) for components, including waist circumference (WC), triglyceride (TG) levels, and low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c), was observed. However, differences between sexes were apparent, with a more pronounced increase in OR based on SUA levels in girls. Discussion SUA levels were closely associated with MetS and its components, even in nonobese subjects. Therefore, high SUA levels in children and young adolescents should be closely monitored to prevent MetS.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aims to investigate the relationship between serum uric acid levels and endothelial function, oxidative stress, and hemodynamic parameters, and to determine if uric acid levels provide additional insights beyond traditional factors like ageing and hypertension in volunteers with low cardiovascular risk factors. Serum uric acid is known for its antioxidant properties, but it may also contribute to cardiovascular risk. MATERIALS AND METHODS The study enrolled 40 male participants, divided into three groups based on age and blood pressure status. Group 1 comprised younger participants, group 2 included older individuals without hypertension, and group 3 consisted of older patients with hypertension. The study assessed endothelial function using laser Doppler imaging and measured acetylcholine- and sodium nitroprusside-induced hyperaemia. The heat microcirculatory response was also examined in the presence of L-NAME, an inhibitor of NOS synthase. The study evaluated oxidative stress and arterial stiffness by measuring allantoin, angiotensin II, Homocitrulline/Lysine, and Chloro-Tyrosine/Tyrosine ratios, as well as by performing non-invasive measurements of aortic augmentation indexes and carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity. RESULTS The study found that uric acid levels did not differ significantly among the three groups. Augmentation indexes increased with ageing, but hypertension did not have an additional effect. Blood pressure and carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity differed among the groups, with the lowest values among younger participants and the highest values among older individuals with hypertension. Allantoin and angiotensin II levels did not differ among the groups. However, Homocitrulline/Lysine and Chloro-Tyrosine/Tyrosine ratios were significantly lower in young subjects. Correlation and multivariable analysis showed that uric acid had no effect on any of the studied parameters. Despite a strong association between ageing and systolic blood pressure with impaired endothelial function, oxidative stress, and arterial stiffness, only ageing retained a significant effect in the multivariable analysis. CONCLUSION In healthy or hypertensive adults with normal renal function, serum uric acid appears to be a futile bystander in endothelial function, oxidative stress, and arterial stiffness, in contrast to ageing, which reduces NO bioavailability. This study suggests that traditional factors such as ageing and hypertension should be the focus of clinical assessment and management of cardiovascular risk, rather than uric acid levels.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The effects of serum uric acid (SUA) on clinical outcomes in patients with acute kidney injury (AKI) are unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate the association of SUA levels with clinical outcomes of AKI patients. METHODS The data of AKI patients hospitalized in the Affiliated Hospital of Qingdao University were retrospectively reviewed. Multivariable logistic regression was utilized to assess the association between SUA levels and the clinical outcomes of AKI patients. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was applied to assess the predictive ability of SUA levels for in-hospital mortality in patients with AKI. RESULTS A total of 4,646 AKI patients were eligible for study inclusion. In multivariable analysis, after adjustment for various confounding factors in the fully adjusted model, a higher SUA level was found to be associated with increased in-hospital mortality of AKI patients with an odds ratio (OR) of 1.72 (95% CI, 1.21-2.33, p = 0.005) for the SUA level >5.1-6.9 mg/dl group and 2.75 (95% CI, 1.78-4.26, p < 0.001) for the SUA level >6.9 mg/dl group compared with the reference group (SUA ≤3.6 mg/dl). In the ROC analysis, the area under the curve (AUC) of SUA was 0.65 with a sensitivity of 51% and a specificity of 73%. CONCLUSIONS An elevated SUA level is associated with an increased risk of in-hospital mortality in patients with AKI, and it appears to be an independent prognostic marker for these patients.

Abstract
Objective The objective of this study was to examine the contentious relationship between coffee consumption and serum uric acid (SUA) levels, specifically within American population with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Methods A total of 23,381 participants from the 2001-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) were selected for inclusion in this investigation. Linear regression models and generalized additive models with smooth curve fitting were employed to analyze the association between log coffee consumption and serum uric acid levels. Furthermore, the robustness of the findings was assessed across diverse populations. Results The results of the linear regression analysis indicate a positive and marginally statistically significant (p = 0.0307) association between log coffee consumption and SUA, even after controlling for other variables. Furthermore, the generalized additive model revealed a nonlinear relationship characterized by an inverted U-shape between log coffee consumption and SUA. The inflection point, identified as 11.43 g/day, marks the point at which this relationship changes direction. Moreover, this inverted U-shaped relationship was consistently observed across various subgroups, including gender, age (<60 and ≥ 60 years), hypertensive and non-hypertensive individuals, those with and without cardiovascular disease, non-diabetic individuals, and those who consumed coffee with or without caffeine or sugar. Conclusion An inverse U-shaped correlation has been observed between log coffee consumption and SUA levels. This finding implies that once coffee consumption surpasses a specific threshold, it promotes a decline in SUA levels.

Abstract
Objective To investigated the link between the distribution of abdominal fat and the concentration of serum uric acid (SUA) in individuals recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Methods Studied 364 individuals had been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes within one month, and evaluated factors such as the distribution of fat in the abdomen, indicators related to glucose and lipid metabolism. The participants' SUA concentrations were divided into a normal control group (CG) and a hyperuricemia group (HG). Results The HG group had elevated abdominal subcutaneous fat area (SFA), visceral fat content (VFA), body mass index (BMI), fasting blood glucose (FBG), 2-hour postprandial blood glucose (PBG), glycosylated albumin (GA), serum creatinine (SCr), triacylglycerol (TG), and lower values in glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) when compared to the CG group (P < 0.05). Among the obese individuals, the hyperuricemia subgroup exhibited higher measurements in waistline, hipline, VFA, SFA, BMI, PBG, SCr, TG, and lower HDL-C (P < 0.05) compared to the subgroup with normal uric acid levels. In the non-obese group, the hyperuricemia subgroup showed higher VFA, SCr, and FBG levels, and lower HDL-C (P < 0.05). There was a positive correlation between VFA and serum uric acid (SUA) levels (r = 0.329, P < 0.0001). Logistic regression analysis indicated a 24% increased risk of hyperuricemia with every 10cm2 increase in abdominal VFA. Generate the Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve analysis revealed that VFA was the most effective predictor of hyperuricemia and insulin resistance (P < 0.05). Conclusion Newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes patients exhibit a strong correlation between abdominal visceral fat and SUA concentration, the former is identified as an autonomous risk factor for hyperuricemia and an effective indicator for assessing the presence of hyperuricemia and predicting insulin resistance.

Abstract
Changes in lifestyle induce an increase in patients with hyperuricemia (HUA), leading to gout, gouty arthritis, renal damage, and cardiovascular injury. There is a strong inflammatory response in the process of HUA, while dysregulation of immune cells, including monocytes, macrophages, and T cells, plays a crucial role in the inflammatory response. Recent studies have indicated that urate has a direct impact on immune cell populations, changes in cytokine expression, modifications in chemotaxis and differentiation, and the provocation of immune cells by intrinsic cells to cause the aforementioned conditions. Here we conducted a detailed review of the relationship among uric acid, immune response, and inflammatory status in hyperuricemia and its complications, providing new therapeutic targets and strategies.

Abstract
Aims Serum uric acid (SUA) levels have been previously linked to a higher risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in individuals with type 2 diabetes (T2D) according to various observational studies. However, whether this association is causally linked or simply influenced by confounding factors is unclear. Therefore, this study utilized Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to explore the causality between SUA levels and the risk of CVD in individuals with T2D. Methods Our study cohort consisted of 5723 participants who were diagnosed with T2D in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 1999-2018. The study assessed the association between SUA levels and the risk of CVD using a multivariable logistic regression model. To further examine causality between SUA levels and CVD, a two-sample MR study was conducted utilizing genetic data from genome-wide association studies (GWAS) involving over 140,000 individuals. The main MR analysis employed the inverse-variance-weighted (IVW) method. Additionally, several sensitivity analyses were performed to evaluate the robustness and pleiotropy of the results. Results In the cross-sectional study, after multivariable adjustment, participants with SUA levels >6.7 mg/dL exhibited odds ratios (ORs) of 1.51 (95% CI: 1.01-2.26, p=0.049) for heart failure, 1.02 (95% CI: 0.69-1.50, p=0.937) for coronary heart disease, 1.36 (95% CI: 0.78-2.38, p=0.285) for angina, and 1.22 (95% CI: 0.80-1.85, p=0.355) for myocardial infarction when compared to participants with SUA levels ≤ 4.6 mg/dL. However, in the IVW analysis, no causality between SUA levels and the risk of heart failure was observed (OR = 1.03, 95% CI: 0.97-1.09, p = 0.293). The secondary analysis yielded similar results (OR = 1.05, 95% CI: 0.96-1.14, p = 0.299). The sensitivity analyses further supported our primary findings. Conclusion Based on the MR study, we did not find supporting evidence for a causal association between SUA levels and the risk of heart failure.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Serum uric acid to serum creatinine ratio (SUA/Scr) has emerged as a new biomarker, which is significantly associated with several metabolic diseases. However, no study has investigated the association between SUA/Scr and mortality among patients on continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD). METHODS In this multicenter retrospective cohort study, we enrolled CAPD patients in eight tertiary hospitals in China from 1 January 2005 to 31 May 2021. Cox proportional hazard models were used to determine the relationship between SUA/Scr and mortality. RESULTS A total of 2480 patients were included; the mean age was 48.9 ± 13.9 years and 56.2% were males. During 12648.0 person-years of follow-up, 527 (21.3%) patients died, of which 267 (50.7%) deaths were caused by cardiovascular disease. After multivariable adjustment for covariates, per unit increase in SUA/Scr was associated with a 62.9% (HR, 1.629 (95% confidence interval (CI) 1.420-1.867)) and 73.0% (HR, 1.730 (95% CI 1.467-2.041)) higher risk of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality. Results were similar when categorized individuals by SUA/Scr quartiles. Compared with the lowest quartile of SUA/Scr, the highest and the second highest quartile of SUA/Scr had a 2.361-fold (95% CI 1.810-3.080) and 1.325-fold (95% CI 1.003-1.749) higher risk of all-cause mortality, as well as a 3.701-fold (95% CI 2.496-5.489) and 2.074-fold (95% CI 1.387-3.100) higher risk of cardiovascular mortality. Multivariable-adjusted spline regression models showed nonlinear association of SUA/Scr with mortality in CAPD patients. CONCLUSIONS Higher levels of SUA/Scr were associated with higher risk of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in CAPD patients.

Abstract
Vitamin D emerged as an important prognostic biomarker in heart failure (HF), with currently highly debated therapeutic implications. Several trials on vitamin D supplementation in HF showed improvements in left ventricular (LV) remodeling and function and health-related quality of life (HRQoL), which did not translate into mid- to long-term beneficial effects regarding physical performance and mortality. We addressed total 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D), serum albumin, and uric acid (UA) levels, focusing mainly on vitamin D deficiency, as potential markers of LV systolic dysfunction in HF with reduced and mildly reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF, HFmrEF). Seventy patients with LVEF < 50% were comprehensively evaluated using ECG, echocardiography, lung ultrasound (LUS), blood sampling, and the six-minute walk test (6MWT). HRQoL was also assessed using the Minnesota Living with Heart Failure Questionnaire (MLHFQ). Statistically significant positive correlations were found between LVEF, 25(OH)D, serum UA, and albumin, respectively (p = 0.008, p = 0.009, and p = 0.001). Serum UA (7.4 ± 2.4 vs. 5.7 ± 2.1, p = 0.005), NT-proBNP levels (1090.4 (675.2-2664.9) vs. 759.0 (260.3-1474.8), p = 0.034), and MLHFQ scores (21.0 (14.0-47.0) vs. 14.5 (4.5-25.5), p = 0.012) were significantly higher, whereas 25(OH)D concentrations (17.6 (15.1-28.2) vs. 22.7 (19.5-33.8), p = 0.010) were lower in subjects with severely reduced LVEF. Also, 25(OH)D was independently associated with LVEF in univariate and multiple regression analysis, maintaining its significance even after adjusting for confounders such as age, NT-proBNP, the presence of chronic coronary syndrome, hypertension, and anemia. According to our current findings, 25(OH)D is closely associated with LVEF, further supporting the need to establish correct vitamin D supplementation schemes and dietary interventions in HF. The changes in LVEF, 25(OH)D, serum UA, and albumin levels in HFrEF and HFmrEF indicate a similar pathophysiological background.

Abstract
Background The clinical dangers of asymptomatic hyperuricemia to human health have become increasingly prominent over the past 20 years. Previous studies have shown the potential benefits of acupuncture on uric acid levels in the body. However, definitive evidence is lacking. Our objective is to evaluate the efficacy and safety of acupuncture on serum uric acid (SUA) in individuals with asymptomatic hyperuricemia. Methods This is a randomized, single-blind, sham-controlled trial. A total of 180 eligible patients with asymptomatic hyperuricemia will be recruited at three hospitals in China. Patients will be randomly assigned in a 1:1 ratio to receive 16 sessions of manual acupuncture or sham acupuncture for 8 weeks. Patients will be followed up for 12 weeks. The primary outcome will be the change in SUA levels at week 8 after randomization. Secondary outcomes will include dynamic changes in SUA levels, efficacy rates, proportion of gout flare, body weight, and acute medication intake. The MGH Acupuncture Sensation Scale and adverse events related to acupuncture will be measured after each treatment. A blinding assessment will be performed on patients who receive at least one session of acupuncture. Data analyses will be performed on a full analysis set and a per-protocol set. Ethics and dissemination Ethics approval has been obtained from the Clinical Trial Ethics Committee of Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology (approval no. 2021-S135). Written informed consent will be obtained from enrolled patients. The findings will be disseminated in a peer-reviewed journal. Clinical trial registration ClinicalTrials.gov identifier, NCT05406830.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Disorders of purine metabolism are the main cause of hyperuricemia. Current drugs for the treatment of hyperuricemia usually cause a degree of cardiovascular damage. METHODS This study aimed to investigate the therapeutic effects of Armillaria mellea fruiting body (AFB), Armillaria rhizomorph (AR) and Armillaria mellea fermentation product (after rhizomorphs removal) (AFP) on hyperuricemic mice. The hyperuricemia mouse model was established by oral administration of potassium oxonate 0.9 g⋅kg-1 and hypoxanthine 0.5 g⋅kg-1 for two weeks. Starting from the third week, the intragastric administration of the intervention drug group was as follows: Allopurinol 0.013 g⋅kg-1, AFB (3.9 and 7.8 g⋅kg-1), AR (3.9 and 7.8 g⋅kg-1), AFP (1.95 and 3.9 g⋅kg-1) once daily for 14 days. RESULTS Results showed that AFB, AR, and AFP reduced the contents of serum uric acid, serum creatinine, and blood urea nitrogen in hyperuricemic mice and the mechanism of action might be through up-regulation of the expression levels of organic anion transporter 1/organic anion transporter 3 proteins in kidney tissue. AR and AFP both exhibited better uric acid-lowering effects than AFB, which may be due to the higher purine content of AFB. CONCLUSIONS Armillaria mellea and its fermentation products can treat hyperuricemia by up-regulating OAT1 protein and OAT3 protein, reducing uric acid content in mice.

Abstract
Obesity is a risk factor for the development of hyperuricemia, both of which were related to gut microbiota. However, whether alterations in the gut microbiota lie in the pathways mediating obesity's effects on hyperuricemia is less clear. Body mass index (BMI) and serum uric acid (SUA) were separately important indicators of obesity and hyperuricemia. Our study aims to investigate whether BMI-related gut microbiota characteristics would mediate the association between BMI and SUA levels. A total of 6,280 participants from Guangdong Gut Microbiome Project were included in this study. Stool samples were collected for 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The results revealed that BMI was significantly and positively associated with SUA. Meanwhile, BMI was significantly associated with the abundance of 102 gut microbial genera, 16 of which were also significantly associated with SUA. The mediation analysis revealed that the association between BMI and SUA was partially mediated by the abundance of Proteobacteria (proportion mediated: 0.94%, P < 0.05). At the genus level, 25 bacterial genera, including Ralstonia, Oscillospira, Faecalibacterium, etc., could also partially mediate the association of BMI with SUA (the highest proportion is mediated by Ralstonia, proportion mediated: 2.76%, P < 0.05). This study provided evidence for the associations among BMI, gut microbiota, and SUA, and the mediation analysis suggested that the association of BMI with SUA was partially mediated by the gut microbiota. IMPORTANCE Using 16S rRNA sequencing analysis, local interpretable machine learning technique analysis and mediation analysis were used to explore the association between BMI with SUA, and the mediating effects of gut microbial dysbiosis in the association were investigated.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the association between serum uric acid (UA) levels and hypertension in American individuals 20 years of age and older. We used continuous cross-sectional surveys from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey in the United States from 2007 to 2016. Our selected population was adults aged 20 years and older in the United States. We examined the association between serum UA and risk of hypertension using weighted univariate logistic regression analysis, weighted multivariate logistic regression analysis, weighted subgroup analysis, and weighted restricted cubic spline analysis. Serum UA was significantly linked with hypertension in a multivariate logistic regression model adjusted for all variables (odds ratio [OR]: 1.22, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.15-1.28, P < .001). Furthermore, dividing serum UA into quartiles (Q) revealed an association between elevated serum UA and increased risk of hypertension [Q1 = (OR: 1.00), Q2 = (OR: 1.13, 95% CI: 0.95-1.37, P = .159), Q3 = OR: 1.30, 95% CI: 1.10-1.52, P = .002), Q4 = OR: 1.94, 95% CI: 1.58-2.38, P = .161). Additionally, we conducted subgroup analyses for age, sex, race, education, marital status, diabetes status, smoking, and alcohol use and discovered that these factors had a moderating effect on serum UA and hypertension (P < .05). Last but not least, we looked into the nonlinear link between serum UA and hypertension using weighted restricted cubic splines and discovered that there was no such relationship. The segmental effect of serum UA and hypertension, with an inflection point of 5.079 (mg/dL), was discovered in our gender-stratified study. And in analyses stratified by race and marital status, we similarly found a dose-response relationship between UA and hypertension among Hispanics and unmarried people. Our study showed a positive correlation between serum UA and hypertension.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the value of C-peptide-based insulin resistance index in evaluating the correlation between insulin resistance and serum uric acid (Ua) level in subjects undergoing health examination. METHODS The data of 46 017 subjects undergoing health examination were retrospectively collected from the Second Medical Center of PLA General Hospital from January, 2017 to December, 2021. The subjects were divided into Ua≤420 μmol/L group and Ua>420 μmol/L group for comparison of HOMA insulin resistance index (HOMA2-IR) and HOMA insulin resistance-C peptide (HOMA2 IR-CP). The correlations of HOMA2-IR and HOMA2 IR-CP with Ua level were analyzed using Pearson correlation analysis and linear regression analysis. Hierarchical interaction analysis was conducted to assess the differences in the association between insulin resistance index and Ua level in different subgroups. The ROC curve was used to evaluate the predictive ability of insulin resistance index for an increased Ua level. RESULTS The levels of HOMA2-IR and HOMA2 IR-CP were significantly lower in Ua≤420 μmol/L group than in Ua>420 μmol/L group. Univariate Pearson correlation analysis showed a weak correlation of HOMA2-IR with Ua (r=0.262, P<0.001) and moderate correlation of HOMA2 IR-CP with Ua (r=0.409, P<0.001). Multivariate linear regression analysis, after adjustment for confounding factors, demonstrated that HOMA2-IR (R2=0.445, P<0.001) and HOMA2 IR-CP (R2=0.461, P<0.001) were both factors affecting Ua level. Hierarchical interaction analysis showed that the association of insulin resistance index with Ua level varied significantly with gender, age, and glucose metabolism (P<0.001). ROC curve showed that the areas under the curve predicted an increased Ua level by HOMA2-IR and HOMA2 IR-CP were 0.662 and 0.722, respectively. CONCLUSIONS HOMA2 IR-CP is a more accurate indicator for assessing the correlation between insulin resistance and Ua level.

Abstract
The available evidence on the relationship between serum uric acid and triglycerides in clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) is limited. The objective of this study is to investigate whether there is an independent association between serum uric acid and triglycerides in ccRCC, while adjusting for other variables. This cross-sectional study involved 1018 participants with ccRCC, who were admitted to a hospital in China from December 1st, 2013 to January 1st, 2023. The main independent variable investigated was serum uric acid, which was measured at baseline. The dependent variable was triglycerides. Covariates considered in this study included age, sex, body mass index, smoking status, hypertension, diabetes, coronary disease, High-density lipoprotein cholesterol, Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, Total cholesterol, Blood urea nitrogen, and Creatinine. The study included 1018 participants with an average age of 56.92 ± 10.88 years old, and approximately 68% of them were male. The fully-adjusted linear regression analysis indicated a positive association between serum uric acid levels (100μmol/L) and triglyceride levels (mmol/L) after adjusting for confounding factors (β = 0.13, 95% CI [0.07, 0.18]). Furthermore, a smooth curve was constructed between serum uric acid and triglycerides based on the fully-adjusted model. In patients with ccRCC, there was a positive association between serum uric acid and triglycerides.

Abstract
Background As a part of metabolic syndrome, hyperuricemia has a higher incidence in patients with diabetes than in the general population owing to various underlying factors. Objectives The objective of the present study was to investigate the prevalence of hyperuricemia among patients with diabetes and identify associated factors. Design A cross-sectional study. Methods Herein, we included patients with diabetes managed at nine healthcare centers in Chenghua District, Chengdu, from February 2021 to November 2021. Clinical data, lifestyle habits, and laboratory data were collected to determine the prevalence and factors associated with hyperuricemia. Results In total, we included 1577 patients with diabetes (males, 50.35%; females, 49.65%). The median serum uric acid level was 337.9 μmol/L, and the prevalence of hyperuricemia in patients with diabetes was 21.24%. The prevalence of hyperuricemia in male patients was significantly higher than in females (29.35% in males versus 13.03% in females, p < 0.001). Male patients with obesity (p = 0.006) or triglyceride (TG) ⩾ 1.7 mmol/L (p < 0.001) had a high risk of developing hyperuricemia, and hyperuricemia was negatively associated with estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) ⩾ 60 mL/min/1.73 m2 (p < 0.001), glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) ⩾ 7% (p < 0.001), fenofibrate (p = 0.010), and sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT-2) inhibitors (p = 0.035). Considering females, overweight (p = 0.004), alanine transaminase (ALT) > 40 U/L (p < 0.001), and TG ⩾ 1.7 mmol/L (p = 0.015) showed a significant positive correlation with hyperuricemia, while eGFR ⩾ 60 mL/min/1.73 m2 (p < 0.001) was negatively associated with the risk of hyperuricemia. Conclusion Hyperuricemia is highly prevalent in patients with diabetes, especially in males. In addition to traditionally associated factors, fenofibrate and SGLT-2 inhibitors were also associated with the risk of hyperuricemia. Abstract
Introduction There are conflicting data regarding the relation between serum uric acid (SUA) and severity of preeclampsia (PE). The aim of the study was to assess the relation between SUA and the severity of PE. Material and methods A total of 110 pregnant women were studied; 55 with mild PE were compared to 55 women with severe PE in this cross-sectional study, which was conducted in Maternity Hospital. After thorough evaluation and renal function tests, spot urine samples were taken from participants for the protein/creatinine ratio. The urine proteins were measured by the Biuret colorimetric method. The urine creatinine was measured by the modified Jaffe test. The serum uric acid was measured by the enzymatic method. The collected participants' data were statistically analysed, and Pearson's coefficient was used to detect the relation between SUA and severity of PE. Results The serum uric acid was significantly higher in the severe PE group (7.65 ±0.61 mg/dl) compared to the mild PE group (5.26 ±0.79 mg/dl), (p = 0.04). There were significant positive relations between the SUA and both the systolic and diastolic blood pressures [r = 0.27 (p = 0.045) and r = 0.483 (p < 0.001), respectively] in the severe PE group. There were also significant positive relations between the SUA and both the systolic and diastolic blood pressures [r = 0.359 (p = 0.007) and r = 0.429 (p = 0.001), respectively] in the mild PE group. Conclusions There were significant positive relations between the SUA and both the systolic and dia-stolic blood pressures in the severe PE group. This study recommends the use of SUA as a reliable marker of the severity of PE.

Abstract
Background Higher serum uric acid (SUA) can cause gout, which is principally characterized by arthritis due to monosodium urate crystal deposition in the lower extremities. High levels of SUA have been linked to endothelial dysfunction, oxidative stress, and inflammation, all of which are involved in the pathogenesis of peripheral artery disease(PAD). To date, the relationship between SUA levels and PAD is still poorly understood. Method An analysis of 9,839 Chinese adults with essential hypertension from the ongoing China H-type Hypertension Registry Study was conducted in this cross-sectional study. Patients with an ABI ≤0.9 was diagnosed with PAD. Hyperuricemia was defined as SUA levels >420 mol/L in men and >360 mol/L in women. The association between SUA levels and PAD was evaluated using multivariable logistic regression models based on odds ratios (ORs) and their 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Results The enrolled subjects ranged in age from 27 to 93 years, with a mean age of 63.14 ± 8.99 years. The proportion of male patients was 46.22%, and the prevalence of hyperuricemia was 50.72%. In males, hyperuricemia was positively associated with the risk of PAD (adjusted OR per SD increase: 1.72, 95% CI 1.17 to 2.53, P =0.006). Males in the highest SUA tertile were significantly more likely to have PAD (adjusted OR: 2.63, 95% CI 1.42 to 4.86, P = 0.002; P for trend = 0.001). However, this positive relationship was not observed in females (adjusted OR: 1.29, 95% CI 0.77 to 2.17, P = 0.327; P for trend = 0.347). Conclusion According to this cross-sectional study, higher SUA levels were positively associated with PAD in male hypertensive patients, while this positive relationship disappeared in female participants.

Abstract
Introduction Although several studies have explored the associations between single essential metals and serum uric acid (SUA), the study about the essential metal mixture and the interactions of metals for hyperuricemia remains unclear. Methods We performed a cross-sectional study to explore the association of the SUA levels with the blood essential metal mixture, including magnesium (Mg), calcium (Ca), iron (Fe), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), manganese (Mn) in Chinese community-dwelling adults (n=1039). The multivariable linear regression, the weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) were conducted to estimate the associations of blood essential metals with SUA levels and the BKMR model was also conducted to estimate the interactions of the essential metals on SUA. Results In the multivariable linear regression, the association of blood Mg, Mn, and Cu with SUA was statistically significant, both in considering multiple metals and a single metal. In WQS regression [β=13.59 (95%CI: 5.57, 21.60)] and BKMR models, a positive association was found between the mixture of essential metals in blood and SUA. Specifically, blood Mg and Cu showed a positive association with SUA, while blood Mn showed a negative association. Additionally, no interactions between individual metals on SUA were observed. Discussion In conclusion, further attention should be paid to the relationship between the mixture of essential metals in blood and SUA. However, more studies are needed to confirm these findings.

Abstract
Background Globally, chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a growing public health concern. Serum uric acid (SUA) is an easily detectable and readily available biochemical indicator that has long been recognized as an independent risk factor for CKD. In addition, studies have indicated a potential relationship between SUA and body mass index (BMI). However, studies on the effect of SUA levels on the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) in adolescents with different BMIs are very rare. Methods Weighted multiple regression analysis was used to estimate the independent relationship between SUA and log-transformed eGFR. Additionally, we used a weighted generalized additive model and smooth curve fitting to describe the nonlinear relationships in the subgroup analysis. Results First, SUA was negatively associated with log-transformed eGFR even after adjusting for all covariates (β=-0.0177, 95% CI: -0.0203-0.0151, P<0.0001). Second, the results of the stratified analysis found that after adjusting for all covariates, the decrease in log-transformed eGFR due to changes in per SUA levels (Per 1, mg/dL increase) was elevated in female adolescents (β=-0.0177, 95% CI: -0.0216, -0.0138, P<0.0001), adolescents aged 12-15 years (β=-0.0163, 95% CI: -0.0200, -0.0125, P<0.0001) and black (β=-0.0199, 95% CI: -0.0251, -0.0148, P<0.0001) adolescents. Furthermore, we found that adolescents with a higher BMI had higher SUA levels, and the effect of SUA on eGFR was significantly higher in underweight adolescents (β=-0.0386, 95% CI: (-0.0550, -0.0223), P<0.0001). Conclusion SUA was negatively associated with the eGFR in adolescents aged 12-19 years. Furthermore, we found for the first time that SUA affects the eGFR differently in adolescents with different BMIs. This effect was particularly significant in underweight adolescents.

Abstract
Background Accumulating evidence suggests that elevated serum uric acid (SUA) may be a risk factor for hypertriglyceridemia (HTG). However, the epidemiological evidence for the association between SUA and HTG is limited. This article aimed to use the data from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) (2007-2018) database to bridge the research gap. Methods This cross-sectional study used data from 10027 adults involved in NHANES from 2007-2018. We designed the exposure variable as SUA and the outcome variable as HTG. The covariates included demographics, questionnaires, laboratory, and examination information. Weighted logistic regression and subgroup analysis were used to explore the independent association between SUA and HTG. Furthermore, interaction tests were also carried out to evaluate the strata differences. Generalized additive models (GAM), smooth curve fittings, and threshold effect analysis were applied to examine the non-linear relationship. Results A total of 10027 participants were included, of which 3864 were HTG participants and 6163 were non-HTG participants. After fully adjusting for confounders, weighted multiple logistic regression models revealed a 77% increase in the risk of HTG when each unit of log2-SUA increased. There was also a positive association between elevated log2-SUA and developed risk of HTG in the quartile (Q) groups (Q1 OR: 1.00; Q2 OR: 1.17 [95%CI: 0.95,1.45]; Q3 OR: 1.43 [95%CI: 1.16,1.78]; Q4 OR: 1.68 [95%CI: 1.36,2.08]. The subgroup analysis results remained consistent across strata, with a strong positive correlation between SUA and HTG. Interaction tests showed no dependence on physical activity (PA), gender, BMI, smoking status, alcohol intake, hypertension, and diabetes for this positive association between log2-SUA and HTG (all p for interaction >0.05). The participants' age may impact the strength of the association between SUA and HTG (p for interaction <0.05). Conclusion There is a positive association between SUA and HTG in US adults. Considering that SUA may be a risk factor for HTG, individuals diagnosed with HTG should prioritize the daily management of SUA as part of their comprehensive care.

Abstract
Objective To explore the correlation between baseline serum uric acid (SUA) and SUA changes with the incidence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) among middle-aged and older individuals. Method Binary logistic regression was used to calculate the odds ratio (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of the effects of baseline and changes in SUA on the incidence of T2DM. Stratified analysis was conducted based on sex, and the SUA levels were classified into four quartiles to assess the effect of baseline and relative changes in SUA on the incidence of T2DM. Furthermore, interaction analysis was performed between body mass index (BMI) and SUA, age and SUA, and sex and SUA. Results In the cohort study, the highest quartiles of SUA were significantly correlated with an increased incidence of T2DM among females in model 1 [OR = 2.231 (1.631, 3.050)], model 2 [OR = 2.090 (1.523, 2.867)], model 3 [OR = 2.075 (1.511, 2.849)], and model 4 [OR = 1.707 (1.234, 2.362)]. The highest quartiles of SUA had a statistically significant effect on the incidence of T2DM among all participants in model 1 [OR = 1.601 (1.277, 2.008)], model 2 [OR = 1.519 (1.204, 1.915)], model 3 [OR = 1.597 (1.257, 2.027)], and model 4 [OR = 1.380 (1.083, 1.760)]. Regarding the relative change of SUA, the highest quantiles of SUA were significantly correlated with an increased incidence of T2DM among females in model 1 [OR = 1.409 (1.050, 1.890)], model 2 [OR = 1.433 (1.067, 1.926)], and model 3 [OR = 1.420 (1.056, 1.910)], and there was a statistically significant correlation with incident T2DM among all participants in model 4 [OR = 1.346 (1.079, 1.680)] after adjusting for all covariates. However, there was no significant correlation between baseline, relative, and absolute changes in SUA and the incidence of T2DM among males. The interaction analysis demonstrated that sex, BMI, and the relative changes in SUA had a combined effect on the incidence of T2DM, while age and the changes in SUA had a joint effect on the incidence of T2DM only in females. Conclusion There was a positive association between SUA and the incidence of T2DM for all participants. However, significant sex differences in incidence were observed only in women, not men.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the relationship between serum uric acid (UA) and survival in sporadic amyotrophic lateral sclerosis(sALS) patients. METHOD A total of 801 sporadic amyotrophic lateral sclerosis(sALS) patients fulfilled the revised El Escorial criteria were enrolled and followed up in the study. Baseline clinical data and laboratory variables including gender, age, age of onset, site of onset, disease duration, body mass index (BMI), uric acid (UA), creatinine (Cr), and creatine kinase (CK) were collected during enrollment. Multivariate Cox regression models were used to evaluate the survival-related factors after adjustment for confounders. RESULTS The serum UA level was significantly lower in female patients than that in male patients (243.5 vs 314.9μmol/L, p<0.001). Gender, BMI, Cr, CK were significantly associated with the level of uric acid according to the linear regression analysis. In the multivariate Cox regression analysis, higher serum UA level (>268.0μmol/L) was an independent protective factor for prolonged survival among female patients (HR=0.69, P=0.042) after adjustment for confounders. CONCLUSION The present study provided further support that higher UA was a protective factor for survival in sALS patients, especially in female.

Abstract
Objective Recent epidemiological evidence shows that there is an association between serum uric acid (SUA) levels and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The purpose of this meta-analysis is to summarize all available evidence and assess the associations between SUA levels and NAFLD. Methods Using two databases, Web of Science and PubMed, observational studies were applied from the establishment of the databases to June 2022. We used a random effect model to construct the pooled odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) to appraise the association between SUA levels and NAFLD. The Begg's test was conducted to appraise publication bias. Results A total of 50 studies were included, involving 2,079,710 participants (719,013 NAFLD patients). The prevalence and incidence rates (95% CIs) of NAFLD in the patients with hyperuricemia were 65% (57-73%) and 31% (20-41%), respectively. Compared to participants with lower levels of SUA, the pooled OR (95% CI) of NAFLD in those with higher levels of SUA was 1.88 (95% CI: 1.76-2.00). In the subgroup analyses, we found that SUA levels were positively associated with NAFLD in all subgroups, according to study design, study quality, sample size, sex, comparison, age, or country. Conclusion This meta-analysis shows that increased SUA levels are positively associated with NAFLD. The results suggested that reducing SUA levels can be a potential strategy for the prevention of NAFLD. Registration Number PROSPERO-CRD42022358431.

Abstract
Uric acid is a marker of inflammation and a risk factor for atherosclerosis that has been suggested to play a role in carotid plaque instability. Reduced atherosclerotic plaque echogenicity at ultrasound examination is associated with alarming histopathological features and inflammation. In this study, we investigated the relationship between serum uric acid (SUA) levels and echogenic patterns of plaque instability in elderly subjects with carotid atherosclerosis. Since uric acid metabolism largely depends on renal function, SUA levels were indexed for serum creatinine levels (SUA/SCr). We enrolled 108 patients aged 65 years or more (72.7 ± 5.9 years; 50 females and 58 males) who underwent carotid duplex ultrasound to evaluate plaque echogenicity by greyscale median (GSM). The regression analysis demonstrated a significant inverse association between the GSM and the SUA/SCr ratio (β: -0.567; 95% CI -0.751 to -0.384 and p < 0.0001). Stepwise multivariate regression showed that the SUA/SCr ratio explained 30.3% of GSM variability (β: -0.600; 95% CI -0.777/-0.424, p < 0.0001, and semi-partial correlation 0.303). After a mean period of 3.5 ± 0.5 years, 48 patients were reevaluated according to the same baseline study protocol. The regression analysis demonstrated a still significant inverse association between the GSM and the SUA/SCr ratio (β: -0.462; 95% CI -0.745 to -0.178 and p = 0.002). Stepwise multivariate regression showed that the SUA/SCr ratio explained 28.0% of GSM variability (coefficient -0.584, 95% CI -0.848/-0.319, p < 0.0001, and semi-partial R2 0.280). In conclusion, this study demonstrates that SUA levels indexed for serum creatinine are associated with the echogenic features of carotid plaque vulnerability in elderly patients with atherosclerotic disease. These data could suggest an influential role for uric acid metabolism in carotid plaque biology.

Abstract
Background The study aims to explore the relationship between obesity and serum uric acid in adolescents by combining body mass index and waist height ratio. Methods 475 adolescents in our study were classified as normal weight without central obesity (NW), normal weight but central obesity (NWCO), overweight or obesity without central obesity (OB) and overweight or obesity with central obesity (OBCO). Odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for hyperuricemia were calculated using a logistic regression model. The dose-response association between obesity indicators and serum uric acid were explored by restricted cubic spline model. Results The highest serum uric acid level and the OR for hyperuricemia were found in the OBCO group, regardless of sex. After controlling for waist height ratio, the risk of hyperuricemia increased with increasing body mass index in boys and girls. The restricted cubic spline model showed that boys had higher ORs for hyperuricemia at the 25th and 75th percentiles of body mass index than for waist height ratio and girls had a higher OR for hyperuricemia than waist height ratio at the 25th percentile of body mass index. Conclusions Hyperuricemia in adolescence was not only associated with the overweight or obesity in BMI, but with the combination of overweight or obesity in BMI and central obesity in WHtR. However, in boys and girls, the increased risk of hyperuricemia associated with elevated body mass index was significantly better than that of waist height ratio.

Abstract
Background Healthy individuals with normal level of serum uric acid (SUA) may not be truly at the lowest risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). This study aimed to assess the association of SUA levels with CVD and its subtypes in people without CVD risk factors and determine a suitable target of SUA to prevent CVD. Methods and Results We enrolled 25 284 participants who were free of CVD, absent of CVD risk factors, and with an SUA level between 180 and 359 μmol/L (3-6 mg/dL) at baseline from the Kailuan study. Cox proportional hazards models were applied to calculated adjusted hazard ratio (HR) and 95% CI for the risk of CVD and its subtypes. During a median follow-up of 12.97 years (interquartile range, 12.68-13.16 years), we identified 1007 cases of CVD. There was an increase in the risk of incident CVD with increasing SUA levels (Ptrend=0.0011). Compared with participants with SUA levels of 180 to 239 μmol/L (3-4 mg/dL), the HR of CVD was 1.12 (95% CI, 0.96-1.31) and 1.28 (95% CI, 1.08-1.52) for SUA levels of 240 to 299 μmol/L (4-5 mg/dL) and 300 to 359 μmol/L (5-6 mg/dL), respectively. A multivariable-adjusted spline regression model showed a J-shaped association between SUA and the risk of CVD. Similar results were observed for stroke and myocardial infarction. Conclusions The risk of incident CVD increased with elevating SUA levels among individuals without hyperuricemia or other traditional CVD risk factors. These findings highlighted the importance of primordial prevention for SUA level increase along with other traditional CVD risk factors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND SIM0295, a novel inhibitor of human uric acid transporter 1 (hURAT1), is used to treat patients with gout and hyperuricemia. This study aimed to develop population pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics (popPK/PD) models of SIM0295 and explore potential covariates to inform clinical drug development. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS Data were obtained from four phase I studies conducted in healthy Korean and Chinese subjects and two phase II studies conducted in Korean patients with gout and hyperuricemia. The popPK/PD model of SIM0295 was developed using nonlinear mixed effects modeling. RESULTS SIM0295 pharmacokinetics was described using a two-compartment model with the absorption of four transit compartments and first-order elimination. PK parameters were normalized to weight via allometric scaling. Food was identified as a factor significantly affecting the absorption rate, with no clinical relevance. The sigmoid Emax model with a semi-mechanism of inhibition of serum uric acid (sUA) reabsorption was used to describe the exposure-response relationship. Additionally, Monte Carlo simulations demonstrated that approimately 9 mg/day of SIM0295 for 7 days could achieve the maximum decrease in sUA. CONCLUSION The established popPK/PD model characterized the dose-exposure-response relationship for SIM0295 in healthy subjects and patients with gout and hyperuricemia and could be used to inform the drug development.

Abstract
An edible sea cucumber Holothuria atra has been hypothesized to have medicinal benefits against hyperuricemia owing to its bioactive compounds, including mono- and poly-unsaturated fatty acids. Herein, we aimed to investigate the fatty acids-rich extract produced from H. atra to treat hyperuricemic rats (Rattus novergicus). The extraction was carried out using n-hexane solvent and then administered to potassium oxonate-induced hyperuricemic rats, with allopurinol acting as a positive control. The extract (50, 100, 150 mg/kg body weight) and allopurinol (10 mg/kg) were administered QD through an oral route using a nasogastric tube. Serum uric acid, creatinine, aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and blood urea nitrogen of the abdominal aortic blood were investigated. Our results suggested that the extract was rich in polyunsaturated (arachidonic acid) and monounsaturated fatty acids (oleic acid), in which its administration of 150 mg/kg could significantly reduce serum uric acid (p < 0.001), AST (p = 0.001), and ALT (p = 0.0302). The anti-hyperuricemic activity could be associated with the modulation of GLUT9 by the H. atra extract. In conclusion, the n-hexane extract from H. atra is a potential serum uric acid-lowering agent targeting GLUT9, where further investigations are crucially warranted.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Serum uric acid (SUA) has been shown to increase all-cause mortality from cardiovascular disease. However, limited studies have examined the mediating effect of dyslipidemia, hyperglycemia, or hypertension on the association between SUA and all-cause mortality in patients with congestive heart failure (CHF). METHODS Participants in the present investigation were 620 US adults with CHF from the NHANES database (1999-2014). The relationship between SUA and all-cause mortality was evaluated utilizing multivariable Cox proportional hazards models. Additionally, the nonlinearity between SUA and mortality was investigated utilizing Restricted Cubic Splines (RCS) and 2-piecewise Cox proportional hazards models. Finally, the mediating role of cardiometabolic factors on the relationship between SUA and all-cause mortality was investigated utilizing the mediation analysis. RESULTS During a mean follow-up of 7.6 years, 391 (63.1%) all-cause deaths occurred. Furthermore, we found a U-shaped association between SUA and all-cause mortality. The inflection point for the RCS curve was found at a SUA level of 363 umol/L. The hazard ratios (95% confidence intervals) for all-cause mortality were 0.998 (0.995-1.000) and 1.003 (1.002-1.005) to the left and right of the inflection point, respectively. This U-shaped association was also observed in both subgroups of sex and age. Moreover, the effect of SUA on all-cause mortality was not mediated by hypertension, hyperglycemia, or dyslipidemia (all P-values > 0.05). CONCLUSION The association between SUA level and all-cause mortality followed a U-shaped curve, and this association was not mediated by hypertension, hyperglycemia, or dyslipidemia.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Contrast-induced acute kidney injury (CIAKI) is one of the main causes of acute renal failure in hospitalized patients, following the administration of iodinated contrast medium used for CT scans and angiographic procedures. CIAKI determines a high cardiovascular risk and appears to be one of the most feared complications of coronary angiography, causing a notable worsening of the prognosis with high morbidity and mortality. AIM To evaluate a possible association between the renal resistive index (RRI) and the development of CIAKI, as well as an association with the main subclinical markers of atherosclerosis and the main cardiovascular risk factors. MATERIALS AND METHODS We enrolled 101 patients with an indication for coronary angiography. Patients underwent an assessment of renal function (serum nitrogen and basal creatinine, 48 and 72 h after administration of contrast medium), inflammation (C reactive protein (CRP), serum calcium and phosphorus, intact parathormone (iPTH), 25-hydroxyvitaminD (25-OH-VitD), serum uric acid (SUA), total cholesterol, serum triglycerides, serum glucose and insulin). All patients also carried out an evaluation of RRI, intima-media thickness (IMT), interventricular septum (IVS) and the ankle-brachial index (ABI). RESULTS 101 patients (68 male), with a mean age of 73.0 ± 15.0 years, were enrolled for the study; 35 are affected by type 2 diabetes mellitus. A total of 19 cases of CIAKI were reported (19%), while among diabetic patients we reported an incidence of 23% (8 patients). In our study, patients with CIAKI had significantly higher RRI (p < 0.001) and IMT (p < 0.001) with respect to the patients who did not develop CIAKI. Furthermore, patients with CIAKI had significantly higher CRP (p < 0.001) and SUA (p < 0.006). CONCLUSIONS We showed a significant difference in RRI, IMT, SUA and CRP values between the population developing CIAKI and patients without CIAKI. This data appears relevant considering that RRI and IMT are low-cost, non-invasive and easily reproducible markers of endothelial dysfunction and atherosclerosis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study evaluates the association between dietary acid load (DAL) and hyperuricemia in Chinese adults. METHODS The China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS) in 2009 was used in this cross-sectional study. Potential renal acid load (PRAL) and net endogenous acid production (NEAP) were applied to estimate DAL. A multiple logistic regression model was used to test the relationship between DAL and hyperuricemia risk. RESULTS A total of 7947 participants were included in this study, of whom 1172 had hyperuricemia. The PRAL score was positively related to the prevalence of hyperuricemia, even when potential covariates were taken into account. In comparison with Q1, the ORs were 1.12 (95% CI, 0.92-1.38), 1.20 (95% CI, 0.97-1.47) and 1.42 (95% CI, 1.16-1.75) in Q2, Q3 and Q4. However, there was no significant relationship between NEAP scores and hyperuricemia. Every 10 g increase in energy-adjusted fat, protein and animal protein intakes caused a 10%, 17% and 18% increase in hyperuricemia risk, respectively (OR: 1.10, 95% CI: 1.04-1.16; OR: 1.17, 95% CI: 1.11-1.25; OR: 1.18, 95% CI: 1.12-1.24, respectively). An obvious linear correlation was also suggested by the restricted cubic spline. CONCLUSIONS Hyperuricemia risk was associated with higher PRAL among Chinese adults. This means that a diet low in PRAL scores could be a very valuable uric acid-lowering dietary pattern.

Abstract
Elevated serum uric acid (SUA) levels are associated with coronary artery disease (CAD). However, whether this association is independent of traditional cardiovascular risk factors remains controversial. Our study aimed to determine the concentration of SUA in the presence and severity of CAD in multi-ethnic patients in Xinjiang, China. For this study, 412 consecutive patients with percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) and 845 individuals with normal coronary angiograms were included in the study. CAD severity was evaluated using the Gensini score index. The SUA concentrations and the levels of various cardiometabolic risk factors were investigated. We assessed the relationship between SUA levels and other cardiometabolic risk factors. Logistic regression was used to evaluate risk factors for PCI patients. SUA levels were significantly elevated in PCI patients compared to those in control subjects (P < .01). With increased UA levels, we found that the risk factors for CAD increased. SUA concentration had a significant positive relationship with total cholesterol (P < .01), triglycerides (P < .01), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (P < .01), and creatinine (P < .01) in both sexes. In the PCI group, there was no significant correlation between UA levels. SUA levels are not an independent risk factor for CAD. It can be concluded that in Xinjiang, China, SUA is related to multiple risk factors for CAD, but not related to the severity of CAD.

Abstract
Background Certain foods and food groups could positively or negatively impact serum uric acid (SUA) levels. However, evidence on the holistic dietary strategy to prevent and control hyperuricemia (HUA) development remains limited. Objective The aim of this research work was to explore the association of dietary approaches to stop hypertension (DASH) diet with SUA levels and odds of HUA among Chinese adults. Methods This research premise included 66,427 Chinese adults aged 18 and above who were part of the China Adult Chronic Disease and Nutrition Surveillance in 2015. Dietary consumptions were assessed via the household condiment weighing approach and a three-day, 24-hour dietary recall. Total fat, saturated fat, calcium, protein, potassium, cholesterol, magnesium, fiber, and sodium were all adopted to calculate the DASH score (score range, 0–9). The associations of DASH score with SUA levels and odds of HUA were evaluated using multiple linear and logistic regression models, respectively. Results We established that a higher DASH score was linked with a lower SUA levels (β = − 0.11; 95% CI: − 0.12, − 0.1; p < 0.001) and odds of HUA (OR = 0.85; 95% CI: 0.83, 0.87; p < 0.001) after adjustment for age, sex, ethnicity, education status, marital status, health behaviours and health factors. The association of the DASH diet with odds of HUA was stronger among men (p-interaction = 0.009), non-Han Chinese (p-interaction< 0.001) as well as rural residents (p-interaction< 0.001). Conclusions Our results illustrate that the DASH diet was remarkably negatively with SUA levels and odds of HUA in the Chinese adult population. Abstract
Background The purpose of this analysis was to investigate the associations between serum uric acid and phase angle in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Methods In this retrospective cross-sectional study, we included 200 type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients treated during 2018-2019 at Zhongda Hospital Southeast University. Phase angle (PhA) and other body composition indicators were measured by bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA). All patients underwent routine clinical examinations on the day of hospitalization, and the basic information and clinical symptoms of these patients were recorded. Results Serum uric acid (UA) was significantly associated with PhA (p <0.001). Overall, in the crude model and minor, all adjusted models (crude model, Models I-II), the phase angle increased as the tertiles of serum uric acid increased. In the minor adjusted model (Model I, adjustment for age and duration) fully adjusted model (Model II, adjustment for age, duration, Lpa, BMI, and WHR), the adjusted β for participants in tertiles of serum uric acid were 0.26 (95% CI: 0.05-0.46) and 0.32 (95% CI: 0.11-0.54), respectively, compared with those in the lowest tertile 1. Conclusion There was a nonlinear relationship between serum uric acid and PhA in T2DM patients, and the phase angle increased as uric acid increased within a certain range, and this effect disappeared when uric acid exceeded a certain value.

Abstract
Objective Independent and interactive effects of multiple metals levels in urine on the risk of hyperuricemia (HUA) in the elderly were investigated. Methods A total of 6,508 individuals from the baseline population of the Shenzhen aging-related disorder cohort were included in this study. We detected urinary concentrations of 24 metals using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, fitted unconditional logistic regression models, and the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator regression models for the selection of metals as well as unconditional stepwise logistic regression models and restricted cubic spline logistic regression models for assessing the associations of urinary metals and HUA risk, and finally applied generalized linear models to determine the interaction with urinary metals on the risk of HUA. Results Unconditional stepwise logistic regression models showed the association between urinary vanadium, iron, nickel, zinc, or arsenic and HUA risk (all P < 0.05). We revealed a negative linear dose-response relationship between urinary iron levels and HUA risk (P overall < 0.001, P nonliner = 0.682), a positive linear dose-response relationship between urinary zinc levels and HUA risk (P overall < 0.001, P nonliner = 0.513), and an additive interaction relationship between urinary low-iron and high-zinc levels and HUA risk (RERI = 0.31, 95% CI: 0.03-0.59; AP = 0.18, 95%CI: 0.02-0.34; S = 1.76, 95%CI: 1.69-3.49). Conclusion Urinary vanadium, iron, nickel, zinc, or arsenic levels were associated with HUA risk, and the additive interaction of low-iron (<78.56 μg/L) and high-zinc (≥385.39 μg/L) levels may lead to a higher risk of HUA.
