Abstract
BACKGROUND Population-based evidence on the relationship between dynapenic abdominal obesity and depressive symptoms is rare. We aimed to prospectively investigate the relationship between dynapenic abdominal obesity and depressive symptoms among middle-aged and older Chinese adults. METHODS A total of 9322 participants free of depressive symptoms in the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study were included. The participants were divided into four groups: non-dynapenic/non-abdominal obesity (ND/NAO), non-dynapenic/abdominal obesity (ND/AO), dynapenic/non-abdominal obesity (D/NAO) and dynapenic/abdominal obesity (D/AO) according to the sex-specific grip strength (<28 kg for men and <18 kg for women) and waist circumference (≥85 cm for men and ≥80 cm for women) that in line with the Chinese criteria. Depressive symptoms was defined as a score of ≥12 for the 10-item Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale. Logistic regression model was used to explore the association between dynapenic abdominal obesity and depressive symptoms. RESULTS After an approximately 3-year of follow-up, 1810 participants (19.4 %) developed depressive symptoms. The multivariable-adjusted odds ratio for the D/AO versus ND/NAO was 1.61 (95 % CI: 1.31-1.98) for depressive symptoms. In addition, this relationship was more profound in participants aged<60 years (OR = 2.27, 95 % CI: 1.60-3.22) than participants aged ≥60 (OR = 1.36, 95 % CI: 1.05-1.77; P-interaction = 0.04). However, dynapenic obesity (defined by body mass index) was not linked to depressive symptoms. LIMITATIONS Causal link and residual confounding were not addressed because of the observational study design. CONCLUSIONS Dynapenic abdominal obesity was associated with an increased risk of depressive symptoms, especially among those aged<60 years.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to investigate the association between ultra-processed food (UPF) intake and the risk for metabolic syndrome (MetS) in Korean adults. METHODS The study consisted of 22 688 Korean adults ≥19 y of age from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) 2016-2020. The NOVA classification categorizes foods according to the nature, extent, and purpose of industrial processing. MetS was defined based on the National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III criteria and a modified waist circumference cut-off for Korean adults. We estimated the usual percent total food intake from UPFs. We used multivariate logistic regression to assess the association between UPFs and risk for MetS, adjusted for age, sex, education level, income level, smoking status, alcohol drinking, physical activity, and total energy intake. We further analyzed the association of UPFs with each component of MetS. RESULTS The median usual percent total food intake from UPFs was 22%, and the midpoint of intake ranged from 3% (quartile 1) to 48% (quartile 4). The group with the highest UPF consumption had a 19% higher risk for developing MetS than the lowest quartile of UPF consumption (odds ratio [OR],1.19; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.06-1.33; Ptrend = 0.006). In analysis of the relationship between UPF intake and MetS components, a higher UPF was associated with an increased risk for hypertension (OR, 1.13; 95% CI, 1.01-1.26; Ptrend = 0.037) and abdominal obesity (OR, 1.19; 95% CI, 1.07-1.33; Ptrend = 0.001), but had no significant association with other components (hyperglycemia, hypertriacylglycerolmia, and low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, all P > 0.05). CONCLUSION Higher UPF contribution to total daily food intake is associated with an increased risk for MetS, particularly with a higher risk for hypertension and abdominal obesity.

Abstract
Obesity is a major risk factor of hypertension, therefore quantifying the contribution of obesity to hypertension is necessary. The current study aimed to investigate the changes in population-attributable fractions (PAFs) of hypertension associated with general obesity and abdominal obesity over the recent 2 decades among the US population, as well as important sub-populations. This report was performed based on national-level cross-sectional data for 46,535 adults aged 18 years and older and 20,745 children aged 8-17 from the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 1999-2018. The PAFs of hypertension due to general obesity and abdominal obesity were calculated by sex, race/ethnicity, and survey year. The linear regression analysis was used to evaluate the secular trends of PAFs over the years. The prevalence of general obesity and abdominal obesity presented significantly increasing trends during the past 2 decades in the US. The PAFs of hypertension due to general obesity increased steadily from 11.9 % to 15.1 % in women with a slope of 0.38 % (95 % CI: 0.31 - 0.45 %) and from 8.4 % to 13.4 % in men with a slope of 0.46 % (95 % CI: 0.36 - 0.56 %). Similar increasing trends were also observed for the PAFs due to abdominal obesity in both women and men. Additionally, there were significantly different trends of PAFs in various races/ethnicities. Over the past 2 decades, the contributions of obesity to hypertension were gradually rising among US population, which emphasizes the importance of controlling weight to further reduce the burden of hypertension.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE In recent years, patients with celiac disease (CeD) have been reported to have a high prevalence of fatty liver and metabolic syndrome. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the prevalence of fatty liver and metabolic syndrome in patients with CeD and effect of gluten-free diet in them. METHODS The PubMed, Embase and the Cochrane Library databases were searched for original studies upto November 18, 2022. We included full-text articles published in the English language after 1990 that used well-defined criteria for CeD, fatty liver and metabolic syndrome. A random effects model was used to calculate pooled prevalence. RESULTS Of 350 studies identified, 11 studies (n = 2578) were included in the analysis. On analysis of both cross-sectional and longitudinal studies, pooled prevalence of fatty liver and metabolic syndrome in treatment-naïve patients with CeD were 18.2% (95% CI 8.3-30.8%, n = 1237) and 4.3% (95% CI 2.4-6.7, n = 1239) and in those on GFD of varying duration was 28.2% (95% CI 20.7-36.4%, n = 1368) and 21.3% (95% CI 11.7-32.9%, n = 2193), respectively. There was no difference in the prevalence of fatty liver and metabolic syndrome between low- or high-income group countries. CONCLUSIONS Patients with CeD have a high prevalence of fatty liver and metabolic syndrome which increases further with the initiation of GFD. Patients with CeD should thus be screened and monitored for development of fatty liver and metabolic syndrome. They should be counselled appropriately regarding their diet and inclusion of physical activity in their lifestyle.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Abdominal obesity (AO) is characterised by excess adipose tissue. It is a metabolic risk that affects the physical and mental health, particularly in women since they are more prone to mental health problems like depression. This study investigated the association between AO and depressive symptoms in Peruvian women of reproductive age (18-49 years). DESIGN This is a cross-sectional observational study. SETTING Peruvian women population of reproductive age. PARTICIPANTS We used data from the Peruvian Demographic and Family Health Survey (DHS) for 2018 and 2019 to assess 17 067 women for the presence of depressive symptoms (using the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9): cut-off score ≥ 10) and AO (measured by abdominal circumference; cut-off score ≥88 cm). RESULTS We observed a 64·55 % prevalence of AO and 7·61 % of depressive symptoms in the study sample. Furthermore, 8·23 % of women with AO had depressive symptoms (P < 0·05). Initially, women with AO appeared to have a 26 % higher risk of depressive symptoms compared with women without AO (P = 0·028); however, after adjustment for covariates, no statistically significant association was observed. CONCLUSIONS Therefore, although both conditions are common in women of this age group, no significant association was found between AO and depressive symptoms.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Obesity refers to a significant contributor to the development of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Early prediction of OSA usually leads to better treatment outcomes, and this study aims to employ novel metabolic markers, visceral adiposity index (VAI), and lipid accumulation product (LAP) to evaluate the relationship to OSA. METHODS The data used in the current cross-sectional investigation are from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), which was carried out between 2015 and 2018. To examine the correlation between LAP and VAI levels and OSA, multivariate logistic regression analysis was adopted. In addition, various analytical methods were applied, including subgroup analysis, smooth curve fitting, and threshold effect analysis. RESULTS Among totally 3932 participants, 1934 were included in the OSA group. The median (Q1-Q3) values of LAP and VAI for the participants were 40.25 (21.51-68.26) and 1.27 (0.75-2.21), respectively. Logistic regression studies indicated a positive correlation between LAP, VAI, and OSA risk after adjusting for potential confounding variables. Subgroup analysis revealed a stronger correlation between LAP, VAI levels, and OSA among individuals aged < 60 years. Through smooth curve fitting, specific saturation effects of LAP, VAI, and BMD were identified, with inflection points at 65.684 and 0.428, respectively. CONCLUSION This study demonstrates that elevated levels of LAP and VAI increase the risk of OSA, suggesting their potential as predictive markers for OSA and advocating for dietary and exercise interventions to mitigate OSA risk in individuals with high LAP and VAI levels.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There is little epidemiological evidence on the relationship of dynapenic abdominal obesity (DAO) and the development of functional disability, particularly in Asian populations. We aimed to investigate the association of DAO with new-onset functional disability in Chinese adults. METHODS A total of 7881 participants aged ≥45 years from China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) in 2011 and 2015 were included in the study. Dynapenia and abdominal obesity were respectively defined based on handgrip strength (<28 kg for male and <18 kg for female) and waist circumference (≥ 90 cm for male and ≥85 cm for female). The sample was divided into four groups: non-dynapenic/non-abdominal obesity (ND/NAO), non-dynapenic/abdominal obesity (ND/AO), dynapenic/non-abdominal obesity (D/NAO) and dynapenic/abdominal obesity (D/AO). Functional status was assessed by basic activities of daily living (BADL) or instrumental activities of daily living (IADL). Logistic regression model was used to explore the longitudinal association between dynapenic abdominal obesity and incident functional disability. RESULTS After a 4-year follow-up, 1153 (14.6 %) developed BADL disability and 1335 (16.9 %) developed IADL disability. The multivariable-adjusted odds ratios (95 % CIs) for the D/AO versus ND/NAO were 2.21 (1.61-3.03) for BADL disability, and 1.68 (1.23-2.30) for IADL disability. In addition, DAO was associated with an increased risk for functional dependency severity (odds ratio, 2.08 [95 % CI, 1.57-2.75]). CONCLUSIONS DAO was significantly associated with greater risk of functional disability among Chinese middle-aged and older adults. Our findings indicated that interventions targeted DAO might be effective in the primary prevention of functional disability.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Urinary incontinence (UI) is significantly link to abdominal obesity. This study aimed to assess the association between anthropometric indices of abdominal obesity, including body roundness index (BRI), conicity index (CI), and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), and UI risk in adult females. METHODS We analyzed data from 10, 317 adult females in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database (2005-2018). Weighted multivariable-adjusted regression analysis was conducted to determine the odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for the association between BRI, CI, WHtR, and UI. Stratified analyses revealed the association based on the population type. Receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) analyses were used to assess the predictive value of UI. RESULTS All indices of abdominal obesity investigated were positively and independently associated with the prevalence and severity of three types of UI. After adjusting for all relevant confounding variables, a significantly positive association between BRI and the prevalence of UI were observed (OR quartile 4 vs. quartile 1: urge UI (UUI): 1.93, 95% CI 1.61-2.30; stress UI (SUI): 2.29, 95% CI 1.94-2.70; mixed UI (MUI): 2.26, 95% CI 1.82-2.82; all P < 0.0001, P for trend < 0.0001, respectively), as well as WHtR and CI, which particularly prominent for female in premenopausal. Moreover, a one-unit increment of BRI was significantly associated with an increased severity index of UUI (β: 0.06, 95% CI 0.04-0.09, P < 0.0001), SUI (β: 0.10, 95% CI 0.07-0.13, P < 0.0001) and MUI (β: 0.07, 95% CI 0.04-0.10, P < 0.0001), which this trend was also observed in each subtype of UI for WHtR and CI. Furthermore, the ROC analysis demonstrated a higher diagnostic efficacy of BRI and WHtR compared with BMI in discriminating UI with an AUC of 0.600 for SUI, 0.617 for UUI, and 0.622 for MUI (all P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS An increased BRI, CI, and WHtR are significantly associated with higher prevalence and severity of UI in females.

Abstract
Various studies have associated Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) with obesity, but the role of physical activity in this connection is uncertain. This study examined whether adopting an active lifestyle can mitigate the link between adolescent ADHD and the risk of adult obesity. Longitudinal data from the Add Health Study (Waves I, III, and V) were used. Participants self-reported ADHD symptoms (hyperactivity/impulsivity, inattention, combined) during Wave III and self-assessed their recent moderate-to-vigorous physical activity. An "active lifestyle" required meeting activity criteria in both adolescence (Wave I) and adulthood (Wave III-V). Of 2609 participants, 1.42 % exhibited combined ADHD symptoms. A non-linear relationship was observed between inattentive/hyperactive scores and body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC). Individuals with ≥ 6 hyperactivity/impulsivity symptoms had higher BMI (1.29 kg/m²) and WC (1.27 cm) at adulthood. Logistic regressions indicate that, compared to individuals without ADHD maintaining an active lifestyle, both inactive participants with and without ADHD show an elevated risk of obesity (odds ratio [OR]=1.56 to 2.63) and abdominal obesity in adulthood (OR = 1.51 to 2.50). Mediation analysis models further confirm these findings, suggesting that physical activity may explain this association. Though exact mechanisms warrant further exploration, adopting an active lifestyle offers promise for reducing obesity risk among individuals with ADHD symptoms.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study was aimed to create and validate a risk prediction model for the incidence of osteopenia in individuals with abdominal obesity. METHODS Survey data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database for the years 2013-2014 and 2017-2018 was selected and included those with waist circumferences ≥102 m in men and ≥88 cm in women, which were defined as abdominal obesity. A multifactor logistic regression model was constructed using LASSO regression analysis to identify the best predictor variables, followed by the creation of a nomogram model. The model was then verified and evaluated using the consistency index (C-index), area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve (AUC), calibration curve, and decision curve analysis (DCA). Results Screening based on LASSO regression analysis revealed that sex, age, race, body mass index (BMI), alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and Triglycerides (TG) were significant predictors of osteopenia development in individuals with abdominal obesity (P < 0.05). These six variables were included in the nomogram. In the training and validation sets, the C indices were 0.714 (95 % CI: 0.689-0.738) and 0.701 (95 % CI: 0.662-0.739), respectively, with corresponding AUCs of 0.714 and 0.701. The nomogram model exhibited good consistency with actual observations, as demonstrated by the calibration curve. The DCA nomogram showed that early intervention for at-risk populations has a net positive impact. CONCLUSION Sex, age, race, BMI, ALP and TG are predictive factors for osteopenia in individuals with abdominal obesity. The constructed nomogram model can be utilized to predict the clinical risk of osteopenia in the population with abdominal obesity.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the combined effect of abdominal obesity and depressive symptoms on the risk to type 2 diabetes, while also assessing the potential influence of various glycemic states and gender on this combined relationship. METHODS Data is acquired from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study, and 5949 participants were included for analysis. Participants were divided into four groups: neither have abdominal obesity nor depressive symptoms (AO-/DS-), only have depressive symptoms (AO-/DS+), only have abdominal obesity (AO+/DS-), and have both abdominal obesity and depressive symptoms (AO+/DS+). Stratified analyses differentiating the glycemic statuses and sex of the participants were also carried out. RESULTS After adjusting for the confounders, the AO-/DS+, AO+/DS- and AO+/DS+ phenotypes were all discovered to be risk factors for type 2 diabetes (OR = 1.38, 95%CI: 1.06-1.79; OR = 2.07, 95%CI: 1.63-2.63; OR = 2.38, 95%CI: 1.83-3.11, respectively) compared with the AO-/DS- phenotype in the overall population. In further stratified analyses, we arrived at the same conclusion for normoglycemic individuals, especially in females. For prediabetes and males, the AO+/DS- and AO+/DS+ phenotypes are risk factors for type 2 diabetes compared with the AO-/DS- phenotype, but not with AO-/DS+. CONCLUSION Regardless of glycemic status and sex, the coexistence of abdominal obesity and depressive symptoms were associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes. Depressive symptoms were independent risk factors for type 2 diabetes only in normoglycemic individuals and females.

Abstract
Background The 2023 Obesity Fact Sheet aims to present an updated overview of obesity prevalence across all age groups, including children and adolescents. Methods This study included individuals aged ≥20 years (n=16,941,423 in 2021) who underwent health checkups provided by the Korean National Health Insurance Service between 2012 and 2021. The prevalence of obesity and abdominal obesity was standardized by age and sex using data from the 2010 population and housing census. For children and adolescents (6 to 18 years) (n=884 in 2021), we used the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2012 to 2021), and obesity was defined by the corresponding sex- and age-specific body mass index percentile of 95th or greater based on the 2017 Korean National Growth Chart for Children and Adolescents. Results The overall prevalence of obesity in 2021 is 38.4% (49.2% in men and 27.8% in women), which is a 1.27-fold increase from 30.2% in 2012. The prevalence of obesity has increased across all age groups, particularly among those aged 20, 30, and 80 years. The prevalence of class III obesity substantially increased from 0.35% (men) and 0.42% (women) in 2012 to 1.21% and 0.97% in 2021, with 3.46- and 2.31-fold increases, respectively. This increase was particularly pronounced in young adults. The prevalence of obesity in children and adolescents has surged from 9.7% in 2012 to 19.3% in 2021, with a greater increase among boys. Conclusion Our study provides information on the current status of obesity prevalence based on the 2023 Obesity Fact Sheet, emphasizing the urgency of implementing timely strategies to reverse this increasing trend.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Smokers tend to have a lower body weight than non-smokers, but also more abdominal fat. It remains unclear whether or not the relationship between smoking and abdominal obesity is causal. Previous Mendelian randomization (MR) studies have investigated this relationship by relying upon a single genetic variant for smoking heaviness. This approach is sensitive to pleiotropic effects and may produce imprecise causal estimates. We aimed to estimate causality between smoking and abdominal obesity using multiple genetic instruments. DESIGN MR study using causal analysis using summary effect estimates (CAUSE) and latent heritable confounder MR (LHC-MR) methods that instrument smoking using genome-wide data, and also two-sample MR (2SMR) methods. SETTING Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) summary statistics from participants of European ancestry, obtained from the GWAS and Sequencing Consortium of Alcohol and Nicotine use (GSCAN), Genetic Investigation of Anthropometric Traits (GIANT) Consortium and the UK Biobank. PARTICIPANTS We used GWAS results for smoking initiation (n = 1 232 091), life-time smoking (n = 462 690) and smoking heaviness (n = 337 334) as exposure traits, and waist-hip ratio (WHR) and waist and hip circumferences (WC and HC) (n up to 697 734), with and without adjustment for body mass index (adjBMI), as outcome traits. MEASUREMENTS Smoking initiation, life-time smoking, smoking heaviness, WHR, WC, HC, WHRadjBMI, WCadjBMI and HCadjBMI. FINDINGS Both CAUSE and LHC-MR indicated a positive causal effect of smoking initiation on WHR (0.13 [95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.10, 0.16 and 0.49 (0.41, 0.57), respectively] and WHRadjBMI (0.07 (0.03, 0.10) and 0.31 (0.26, 0.37). Similarly, they indicated a positive causal effect of life-time smoking on WHR [0.35 (0.29, 0.41) and 0.44 (0.38, 0.51)] and WHRadjBMI [0.18 (0.13, 0.24) and 0.26 (0.20, 0.31)]. In follow-up analyses, smoking particularly increased visceral fat. There was no evidence of a mediating role by cortisol or sex hormones. CONCLUSIONS Smoking initiation and higher life-time smoking may lead to increased abdominal fat distribution. The increase in abdominal fat due to smoking is characterized by an increase in visceral fat. Thus, efforts to prevent and cease smoking can have the added benefit of reducing abdominal fat.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS To assess the association between dietary advanced glycation end products (dAGEs) versus body composition and anthropometric variables. METHODS AND RESULTS Body composition (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry), anthropometry, and habitual food intake were cross-sectionally evaluated in women with excess body weight and body fat. Mean dAGEs content was estimated using a database containing the Nԑ-(carboxymethyl)lysine (CML) content of 549 foods, which was adjusted by mean energy intake, and categorized into low, medium, and high dAGEs, by the 10th and 50th percentiles of the sample. Associations were tested by linear regression adjusted for age, education, marital status, and physical activity level. Eighty participants had mean ± standard deviation dAGEs 7.85 ± 2.65 AGEs kU/kcal. Compared with high dAGEs, women with low dAGEs ingested more carbohydrate (62% vs. 50% of calories, p < 0.001) and fiber (≈25 g vs. ≈18 g, p = 0.027) and less protein (13% vs. 17% of calories, p = 0.006) and fat (26% vs. 33% of calories, p = 0.011). Women with low dAGEs had waist/hip ratio 0.05 higher than those with high dAGEs (R2 = 0.256, p = 0.005). Low dAGEs relative to medium (p = 0.009) and high (p = 0.002) dAGEs was associated with a ≈5% gynoid fat reduction (R2 = 0.164). CONCLUSION Low dAGEs was associated with a higher waist/hip ratio and lower percentage of gynoid fat in women with excess body weight and excess body fat. REGISTRATION NUMBER RBR-7z358j.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Interactions between risk factors may influence disease severity. Knowing this relationship is important for preventive interventions and disease control. The purpose of this study was to determine the interactions effects of obesity and hypertension on the risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). METHODS The data of 9,283 adults 35 to 65 years were examined from the cohort study of Ravansar Non-Communicable Disease (RaNCD). Waist circumference (WC) was used to identify both general and abdominal obesity based on body mass index (BMI). To assess the interaction between hypertension and obesity (general/abdominal) and the risk of T2DM, the additive interaction was calculated. RESULTS The adjusted odds ratios for T2DM were 2.38 (1.67, 3.41) in men and 4.02 (2.47, 6.47) in women for the combinations of hypertension and abdominal obesity. The adjusted odds ratios for T2DM were 2.53 (1.63, 3.82) in men and 2.66 (1.92, 3.70) in women for the combinations of hypertension and general obesity. The results of the additive interaction indicators were inconsistent with gender. The relative excess risk due to interaction (interaction between hypertension and central obesity) (RERI), attributable proportion due to interaction (AP) and synergy index (SI) were0.27 (-1.01, 1.54), 0.11 (-0.41, 0.63) and 1.23 (0.41, 3.68) in male and were 0.61 (-1.12, 2.33), 0.23 (0.08, 0.37) and 1.26 (0.60, 2.61) in female, respectively. CONCLUSION General/abdominal obesity and hypertension have a synergistic effect on the risk of T2DM. The recommendation for preventing T2DM is lifestyle modification. Large longitudinal studies are necessary to investigate causal relationships.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Currently, a growing number of research studies have shown a positive association between obesity and erectile dysfunction, while traditional anthropometric measures, such as BMI, have limited ability to assess the risk of erectile dysfunction. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the association between the new anthropometric index and erectile dysfunction. METHODS A study involving 3594 participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey was conducted. The study calculated various anthropometric indices such as waist circumference (WC), waist-to-height ratio (WtHR), body mass index (BMI), a body shape index (ABSI), conicity index (CI), and body roundness index (BRI). The relationship between anthropometric indices and erectile dysfunction (ED) was investigated using multivariate logistic regression and restricted cubic splines (RCS). Interaction analysis was conducted on subgroups to confirm the findings. Additionally, the efficacy of various anthropometric indicators in predicting the risk of erectile dysfunction was assessed using the receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC). RESULTS After adjusting for potential confounding factors, we identified a positive and independent correlation between erectile dysfunction (ED) and all other anthropometric measures except for BMI. Additionally, the risk of ED increased by 49% and 42% for each standard deviation increment in ABSI and CI, respectively. Dose-response curve analysis demonstrated that WC, BMI, WtHR, and CI displayed a non-linear correlation with the risk of ED. The subgroup analysis revealed that individuals classified as White, who had higher levels of WC, ABSI, and CI, were more susceptible to erectile dysfunction compared to people from other races. ROC analysis showed that ABSI was superior in detecting erectile dysfunction (area under the curve: 0.750; 95% CI 0.732-0.768; optimal cutoff value: 0.083) as compared to other indices. The combination of obesity defined by BMI and other anthropometric measures showed that higher ABSI and CI levels were positively associated with the prevalence of erectile dysfunction, independent of BMI (P < .001). CONCLUSION In this study, anthropometric indicators including ABSI, BRI, WtHR, CI, and WC were positively associated with erectile dysfunction. To improve the prevention and treatment of this condition, it is recommended that new anthropometric indicators receive greater consideration.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The Nordic Nutrition Recommendations (NNR) are developed to promote public health and to prevent food-related diseases such as obesity and cardiovascular diseases. OBJECTIVE To investigate the nutrient intake and adherence to the NNR in a Swedish cohort with abdominal obesity. DESIGN Dietary intake data were collected using 3-day food diaries and anthropometry and clinical chemistry parameters were measured at baseline of a long-term intervention studying weight-loss management. RESULTS Eighty-seven subjects with abdominal obesity successfully completed a 3-day food diary. Twelve of these subjects were excluded for further analysis due to implausible low-energy reporting. The remaining 75 subjects (76% females) had mean age of 52.3 ± 10.1 years and a mean body mass index of 34.3 ± 3.1 kg/m2. Mean total fat intake (41.2 ± 7.0E%) was exceeded by 56% of the sample size compared to the maximum recommended intake (RI) of 40E%, whereas mean carbohydrate intake (40.4 ± 8.0E%) was lower than the RI (45-60E%). The intake of saturated fatty acids was high compared to the NNR with only 2 women and none of men reported intakes within the RI of <10 E%. Adherence to the RI for dietary fibre was very low (16.0% and 13.3% when expressed as g/d and g/MJ, respectively). Analyses of micronutrient intake showed lowest adherences for vitamin D and sodium. CONCLUSIONS The nutrient intake in our subjects compared to NNR was rather low with a high total fat intake, particularly too high intake of saturated fatty acids, high salt consumption, and very low dietary fibre and vitamin D intake. More effort is clearly needed to promote healthy dietary habits among subjects with obesity.

Abstract
The concept of «metabolic syndrome» was brought to the forefront in the early 2000s in international literature, but this interest seems to have faded somewhat in recent years. However, this constellation of cardiovascular risk factors should not be neglected. Taken individually, they hardly seem problematic, but when they are present within the same individual, they significantly increase the risk of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. This clinical vignette aims to draw attention to the usefulness of the search for metabolic syndrome in clinical practic.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to investigate the association between abdominal adiposity and change in cognitive function in community-dwelling older adults. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS This longitudinal study included older adults aged ≥60 years without cognitive impairment who participated in the National Institute for Longevity Sciences - Longitudinal Study of Aging. MEASUREMENTS Cognitive function was evaluated biennially using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) over 10 years. Waist circumference (WC) was measured at the naval level, and subcutaneous fat area (SFA) and visceral fat area (VFA) were assessed using baseline computed tomography scans. WC, SFA, and VFA areas were stratified into sex-adjusted tertiles. A linear mixed model was applied separately for men and women. RESULTS This study included 873 older adults. In men, the groups with the highest levels of WC, SFA, and VFA exhibited a greater decline in MMSE score than the groups with the lowest levels (β [95% confidence interval]: WC, -0.12 [-0.23 to -0.01]; SFA, -0.13 [-0.24 to -0.02]; VFA, -0.11 [-0.22 to -0.01]). In women, the group with the highest level of WC and SFA showed a greater decline in MMSE score than the group with the lowest level (WC, -0.12 [-0.25 to -0.01]; SFA, -0.18 [-0.30 to -0.06]), but VFA was not associated with cognitive decline. CONCLUSION Higher WC, SFA, and VFA in men and higher WC and SFA in women were identified as risk factors for cognitive decline in later life, suggesting that abdominal adiposity involved in cognitive decline may differ according to sex.

Abstract
AIMS The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of three single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) within X-Ray Repair Cross Complementary Group 2 (XRCC2) gene and additional gene- abdominal obesity (AO) interaction with endometrial carcinoma (EC) risk. METHODS Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium was tested for all participants by using SNPstats (online software: http://bioinfo.iconcologia.net/SNPstats). The best SNP-SNP and gene-AO interaction combination among three SNPs within XRCC2 gene and AO was screened using generalized multifactor dimensionality reduction (GMDR). RESULTS We employed the logistic regression analysis showed that rs718282-T allele is associated with increased EC risk, adjusted ORs (95%CI) were 1.67 (1.23-2.04). However, we did not find statistical association between rs3218536, and rs3218384 and EC susceptibility. GMDR analysis was used for SNP-SNP- and gene-abdominal obesity analysis. The cross-validation consistency and the testing accuracy for the interaction were calculated. The two-locus model between rs718282 and AO had a testing accuracy of 60.11%, which was significant at the p < .001 level, and this two- locus model was considered as the best model. It provided statistical evidence for rs718282 gene-AO interaction effects. The results indicated that AO influenced the EC risk depending on the rs718282 genotypes. Compared with non- AO subjects with rs718282-CC genotype, AO subjects with rs718282-CT or TT genotype had the highest EC risk, OR (95%CI) was 2.83 (1.67 - 4.02), after covariates adjustment. CONCLUSIONS Both the rs718282- T allele, and its interaction with AO were associated with increased EC risk.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The association of visceral adiposity with mortality in older adults is conflicting. Whether age influences the predicting ability of visceral adiposity (VAI) for mortality remains unknown. This study uncovered the relationship between age-adjusted visceral adiposity index and mortality through the data of NHANES 2011-2014. METHODS This study obtained data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2011-2014. The age-adjusted visceral adiposity index (AVAI) scores were expressed as quartiles. Receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curve analysis was also applied to compare the predictive ability for mortality. Multivariate weighted Cox regression models were constructed to explore the association between AVAI and mortality. Kaplan-Meier survival curves were conducted for survival analyses. Smooth curve fittings and two-piecewise linear models were applied to explore the relationships between AVAI and mortality. RESULTS This study recruited 4281 subjects aged ≥ 18 years from the NHANES 2011-2014. The AUCs of AVAI were 0.82 (0.79, 0.86) and 0.89 (0.85, 0.92) for predicting all-cause mortality and cardiovascular mortality, which were superior to BMI, WC and VAI (all p < 0.05). AVAI is still an independent predictor for mortality adjusted for confounders. The associations of AVAI with all-cause and cardiovascular mortalities were dose-responsive, with higher AVAI scores indicating higher mortality risks. CONCLUSION Age significantly improves the ability of VAI for predicting all-cause and cardiovascular mortality. Age-adjusted VAI is independently associated with mortality risk, and thus could be considered a reliable parameter for assessing mortality risk.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study investigated whether the lower extremity muscle mass index (LMI) mediates the relationship between general obesity, central obesity, and knee osteoarthritis in middle-aged and elderly women in Korea. METHODS Data of 2,843 women aged ≥50 years were collected from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted between 2009 and 2011. General obesity and central obesity were evaluated based on body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC), calculated through anthropometric measurements and body composition assessments. LMI was calculated by dividing the muscle mass in both legs-measured using the dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry-by body weight. Knee osteoarthritis was defined as a Kellgren-Lawrence scale (KL) grade of ≥2 as assessed through radiographic images. RESULTS Knee osteoarthritis prevalence, indicated by KL grades, was significantly higher in the general obesity and central obesity groups compared to the normal group, and conversely, lower with varying LMI levels. Using mediation analysis with bootstrapping and adjusting for covariates, we found that LMI mediated the relationship between BMI and KL (β, 0.005; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.000 to 0.010) and WC and KL grade (β, 0.002; 95% CI, 0.001 to 0.003), explaining 4.8% and 6.7% of the total effects of BMI and WC on KL grade, respectively. CONCLUSIONS The study suggested that LMI partially mediates the link between general obesity and/or central obesity and knee osteoarthritis, proposing that a higher proportion of lower limb muscle mass relative to body weight can alleviate the increased risk of knee osteoarthritis caused by obesity.

OBJECTIVES To determine the prevalence of cardiometabolic diseases (CMDs) among adults with abdominal obesity and to evaluate the necessity of differentiating severity of abdominal obesity. STUDY DESIGN Cross-sectional study and prospective cohort study. METHODS National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data between 2011 and 2020 were included for cross-sectional analyses. Class I, II and III abdominal obesity were created by dividing waist circumference within sex-specific abdominal obesity range into tertiles. Age-standardized prevalence of CMDs was estimated and differences by severity of abdominal obesity were compared using Poisson regressions. Prospective analyses were performed using NHANES data between 1988 and 2018 with linked mortality data. Cox proportional hazards models were used to assess the association between severity of abdominal obesity and mortality. RESULTS Among 23,168 adults included (mean age: 47.8 years, 49.3% men), 13,307 (57.4%) had abdominal obesity. Among adults with abdominal obesity, the estimated prevalence of diabetes was 17.3% (95% confidence interval: 16.3%, 18.2%), hypertension 39.3% (38.2%, 40.3%), dyslipidemia 59.5% (58.0%, 61.1%), cardiovascular disease 9.0% (8.3%, 9.8%), chronic kidney disease 16.8% (15.9%, 17.7%) and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease 39.9% (38.4%, 41.4%). The estimated prevalence was 55.5% (53.8%, 57.2%) for having ≥2 CMDs. Compared with class I abdominal obesity, class III abdominal obesity was related to a 43%-184% higher prevalence of CMDs and a 44% higher risk of all-cause mortality. CONCLUSIONS The prevalence of CMDs was high and multimorbidity of CMDs was common among US adults with abdominal obesity. The prevalence of CMDs and risk of mortality differed significantly by severity of abdominal obesity.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To analyse the direct and indirect associations of experience of racial discrimination on dietary patterns (DP), obesity and abdominal obesity. DESIGN This is a cross-sectional population-based study. The main exposure was self-reported experiences of racial discrimination (Experiences of Discrimination scale). The mediator variables were the DP: healthy, Brazilian traditional, sugar and carbohydrates, and fast food. The outcomes were obesity (BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2) and abdominal obesity (waist circumference ≥ 88 cm for women; ≥ 102 cm for men). Structural equation modelling was applied. SETTING Porto Alegre, Brazil. PARTICIPANTS Totally, 400 adults aged between 20 and 70 years were participated. RESULTS The mean age of participants was 47·2 years (sd = 13·9), and 75 % were women. Experiencing racial discrimination had a positive direct effect on obesity (healthy DP: β = 0·153, P < 0·05; Brazilian DP: β = 0·156, P < 0·05; sugar and carbohydrates DP: β = 0·156, P < 0·05; and fast-food DP: β = 0·153, P < 0·05) and abdominal obesity (healthy DP: β = 0·206, P < 0·01; Brazilian DP: β = 0·210, P < 0·01; sugar and carbohydrates DP: β = 0·204, P < 0·01; and fast-food DP: β = 0·204, P < 0·01). The experience of racial discrimination did not have a direct effect on DP, nor did it exert an indirect effect on obesity and abdominal obesity through any DP. CONCLUSIONS A higher experience of racial discrimination is associated with obesity and abdominal obesity, independent of diet.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to determine the association between body mass index (BMI) and abdominal obesity with hypertension among the South Asian adults (18-69 years). METHODS This study utilized the nationally representative WHO STEPwise approach to surveillance data (n = 24,413) from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, and Sri Lanka. Hypertension was defined as having a systolic blood pressure of 140 mmHg or higher, a diastolic blood pressure of 90 mmHg or higher, and/or taking antihypertensive medications. A waist circumference ≥ 90 cm in men and ≥ 80 cm in women was considered as abdominal obesity. BMI was categorized according to Asia-specific cutoff and overweight was defined as BMI of 23.0-27.5 kg/m2 and obesity was defined as BMI ≥ 27.5 kg/m2. Multivariable logistic regression analyses were conducted to identify the association between BMI and abdominal obesity with hypertension. The odds ratio (OR) with a 95% confidence interval (CI) was reported. RESULTS Abdominal obesity increased the odds of hypertension 31%-105% compared to those who did not have abdominal obesity (OR: Afghanistan: 2.05; 95% CI: 1.27-3.31; Bangladesh: 1.55; 95% CI: 1.18-2.04; Bhutan: 1.31; 95% CI: 1.03-1.66; Nepal: 1.69; 95% CI: 1.31-2.18; Sri Lanka:1.55; 95% CI: 1.23-1.95). The odds increased among participants with both overweight/obesity and abdominal obesity. In all five countries under study, participants with both overweight and abdominal obesity (OR: Afghanistan: 2.75; 95% CI: 1.75-4.34; Bangladesh: 2.53; 95% CI: 1.90-3.37; Bhutan: 2.22; 95% CI: 1.64-3.00; Nepal: 2.08; 95% CI: 1.54-2.81; Sri Lanka: 2.29; 95% CI: 1.77-2.98), as well as those with obesity and abdominal obesity (OR: Afghanistan: 6.94; 95% CI: 4.68-10.30; Bangladesh: 2.95; 95% CI: 2.19-3.97; Bhutan: 3.02; 95% CI: 2.23-4.09; Nepal: 4.40; 95% CI: 3.05-6.34; Sri Lanka: 3.96; 95% CI: 2.94-5.32), exhibited higher odds of having hypertension as compared to participants with a normal BMI and no abdominal obesity. CONCLUSION Having both abdominal obesity and overweight/obesity increased the odds of hypertension among South Asian adults. Preventing overweight/obesity and abdominal obesity is necessary for preventing the burden of hypertension in South Asia.

Abstract
Previous studies have revealed links between metal(loid)s and health problems; however, the link between metal(loid)s and obesity remains controversial. We evaluated the cross-sectional association between metal(loid) exposure in whole blood and obesity among the general population. Vanadium (V), chromium (Cr), manganese (Mn), cobalt (Co), nickel (Ni), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), arsenic (As), selenium (Se), molybdenum (Mo), cadmium (Cd), antimony (Sb), thallium (T1), and lead (Pb) were measured in 3029 subjects in Guangdong Province (China) using ICP-MS. The prevalence of overweight and obesity (OWO) and abdominal obesity (AOB) was calculated according to body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC), respectively. Multivariate analysis showed that elevated blood Cu, Cd, and Pb levels were inversely associated with the risk of OWO, and these associations were confirmed by a linear dose-response relationship. Elevated blood Co concentration was associated with a decreased risk of AOB. A quantile g-computation approach showed a significantly negative mixture-effect of 13 metal(loid)s on OWO (OR: 0.96; 95% CI: 0.92, 0.99). Two metals-Ni and Mo-were inversely associated with the risk of OWO but positively associated with AOB. We cross-grouped the two obesity measurement types and found that the extremes of metal content were present in people with AOB only. In conclusion, blood Cu, Mo, Ni, Cd, and Pb were inversely associated with the risk of OWO. The presence of blood Co may be protective, while Ni and Mo exposure might increase the risk of AOB. The association between metal(loid) exposure and obesity warrants further investigation in longitudinal cohort studies.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study examines associations between the risk of sleep apnea and abdominal obesity (assessed by waist-to-hip ratio (WHR)) and general obesity (assessed by body mass index (BMI)) in a sample of Chinese and Korean American immigrants. METHODS The dataset included Chinese and Korean participants aged 50-75 who were recruited from primary care physicians' clinics from April 2018 to June 2020 in the Baltimore-Washington D.C. Metropolitan area (n = 394). Abdominal obesity was determined if WHR ≥ 0.9 in men and WHR ≥ 0.85 in women. General obesity was determined if BMI ≥ 30. The risk of sleep apnea was determined by using the Berlin questionnaire. Poisson regression models examined associations between sleep apnea risk and obesity. Models controlled for socio-demographic risk factors. RESULTS Twelve percent of the study participants were classified as a high risk for sleep apnea, and 75% had abdominal obesity whereas 6.4% had general obesity. High risk of sleep apnea was positively associated with abdominal obesity (PR = 1.31, 95% CI: 1.17-1.47) and general obesity (PR = 2.19, 95% CI: 0.90-5.32), marginally significant at p < 0.1). CONCLUSIONS Chinese and Korean immigrants living in the USA who are at high risk of sleep apnea have higher abdominal obesity, even after accounting for sociodemographic characteristics. Abdominal obesity may be a better indicator than general obesity when examining the risk of sleep apnea among Asian Americans. Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Data on the effects of liver fibrosis and hepatic steatosis on outcomes in individuals living with diabetes are limited. Therefore, we investigated the predictive value of the fibrosis and the severity of hepatic steatosis for all-cause mortality in individuals living with diabetes. METHODS A total of 1903 patients with diabetes from the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES III) dataset were enrolled. Presumed hepatic fibrosis was evaluated with Fibrosis-4 index (FIB-4). The mortality risk and corresponding hazard ratio (HR) were analyzed with the Kaplan-Meier method and multivariable Cox proportional hazard models. RESULTS Over a median follow-up of 19.4 years, all-cause deaths occurred in 69.6%. FIB-4 ≥ 1.3 was an independent predictor of mortality in individuals living with diabetes (HR 1.219, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.067-1.392, p = 0.004). Overall, FIB-4 ≥ 1.3 without moderate-severe steatosis increased the mortality risk (HR 1.365; 95%CI 1.147-1.623, p < 0.001). The similar results were found in individuals living with diabetes with metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) (HR 1.499; 95%CI 1.065-2.110, p = 0.020), metabolic syndrome (MetS) (HR 1.397; 95%CI 1.086-1.796, p = 0.009) or abdominal obesity (HR 1.370; 95%CI 1.077-1.742, p = 0.010). CONCLUSIONS Liver fibrosis, as estimated by FIB-4, may serve as a more reliable prognostic indicator for individuals living with diabetes than hepatic steatosis. Individuals living with diabetes with FIB-4 ≥ 1.3 without moderate-severe steatosis had a significantly increased all-cause mortality risk. These findings highlight the importance of identifying and monitoring those individuals, as they may benefit from further evaluation and risk stratification.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There is a scarcity of studies examining the longitudinal relationship between dynapenic abdominal obesity (DAO; ie, impairment in muscle strength and high waist circumference) and future fall risk. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the prospective association between DAO at baseline and falls occurring during 2 years of follow-up in a nationally representative sample of middle-aged and older individuals from Ireland. METHODS Data from 2 consecutive waves of the Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing survey were analyzed. Dynapenia was defined as handgrip strength of <26 kg for men and <16 kg for women. Abdominal obesity was defined as a waist circumference of >88 cm for women and >102 cm for men. DAO was assessed at Wave 1 (2009-2011) and was defined as having both dynapenia and abdominal obesity. Falls occurring between Wave 1 and Wave 2 (2012-2013) were self-reported. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was conducted. RESULTS Data on 5 275 individuals aged ≥50 years were analyzed (mean [standard deviation {SD}] age 63.2 [8.9] years; 48.8% males). After adjustment for potential confounders, compared to no dynapenia and no abdominal obesity at baseline, DAO was significantly associated with 1.47 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.14-1.89) times higher odds for falls at 2-year follow-up. Dynapenia alone (odds ratio [OR] = 1.08; 95% CI: 0.84-1.40) and abdominal obesity alone (OR = 1.09; 95% CI: 0.91-1.29) were not significantly associated with falls at follow-up. CONCLUSIONS DAO increased the risk for falls among middle-aged and older adults in Ireland. Interventions to prevent or reverse DAO may be beneficial for fall reduction.

Abstract
AIMS To explore the relationship between vitamin D and obesity and abdominal obesity in women with infertility. MATERIAL AND METHODS We screened the data from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2013-2016. A total of 201 infertile women between the ages of 20 and 40 years were included in our study. To estimate the independent association of vitamin D with obesity and abdominal obesity, we used weighted multivariate logistic regression models and cubic spline analyses. RESULTS Among infertile women in the NHANES 2013-2016 database, serum vitamin D levels were significantly and negatively associated with body mass index (ß= -0.96, 95% CI: -1.40, -0.51, p < 0.001)and waist circumference (ß= -0.40, 95% CI: -0.59, -0.22, p < 0.001), respectively. After multivariable adjustment, lower vitamin D levels were found to be associated with a higher prevalence of obesity (OR: 8.290, 95% CI: 2.451-28.039, p for trend = 0.001) and abdominal obesity (OR: 4.820, 95%CI: 1.351-17.194, p for trend =0.037). Spline regression showed linearity of the associations between vitamin D and obesity/abdominal obesity (p for nonlinearity > 0.05). CONCLUSION Our findings suggested that a decreased vitamin D might correspond to a higher prevalence of obesity in infertile women, which reminded us to pay more attention to the supplement of vitamin D in obese infertile women.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Both low handgrip strength (HGS) and abdominal obesity (AO) are associated with cognitive impairment. However, it remains unclear whether low HGS and AO interact to affect cognition, and whether the synergistic effect varies by gender. This study aimed to examine whether the association between low HGS and incident cognitive impairment was moderated by AO among Chinese older men and women. METHODS We used the data of participants (≥60 years) from four waves (2011-2018) of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study. We defined low HGS as the maximal HGS of <28 kg in men and <18 kg in women, and AO as waist circumference of ≥90 cm for men and ≥80 cm for women. Cognitive impairment was defined as a global cognitive score in the lowest 10th percentile. For each gender, we used subdistribution hazards model to estimate subdistribution hazard ratios (SHRs) for the association of low HGS and AO with incident cognitive impairment, treating mortality as the competing event and controlling for other covariates. Multiplicative interaction was assessed through a cross-product interaction term of low HGS and AO in the model. Additive interaction between low HGS and AO was evaluated by calculating the relative excess risk due to interaction (RERI) and attributable proportion due to interaction (AP). RESULTS We included 3704 participants (Mean age: 66.9 ± 5.81; 54.9% male). During the 7-year follow-up, 1133 events of interest occurred (731 cognitive impairments and 402 deaths). Incidence rates of cognitive impairment and mortality were 4.1 (95% CI: 3.8 to 4.4) and 2.2 (95% CI: 2.0 to 2.5) per 100 person-years. There were positive multiplicative (SHR for the product term = 1.974, 95% CI: 1.114 to 3.500) and additive interactions (RERI = 1.056, 95% CI: 0.027 to 2.086, AP = 0.454, 95% CI: 0.158 to 0.750) of low HGS and AO on the risk of cognitive impairment among older men. Male participants with both low HGS and AO showed an increased risk of cognitive impairment (SHR = 2.325, 95% CI: 1.498 to 3.609) compared with those without either. There was no evidence of interaction among older women (SHR for the product term = 1.151, 95% CI: 0.725 to 1.825; RERI = 0.044, 95% CI: -0.524 to 0.613; AP = 0.039, 95% CI: -0.458 to 0.536). CONCLUSIONS Low HGS and AO may interact to synergistically increase the risk of cognitive impairment among Chinese older men. Screening the highest-risk subpopulation, who may benefit most from neurocognitive prevention strategies, may maximize potential public health gains.

Abstract
AIM To elucidate the mechanism by which cigarette smoking causes vascular damage, we examined the relationship between cumulative cigarette consumption and abdominal obesity, and the possible mediating effect of smoking on arterial stiffness. METHODS Cross-sectional data from 19499 never smokers and 5406 current smokers receiving health screening was analyzed. Abdominal obesity was assessed by ABSI, and arterial stiffness by CAVI. High CAVI was defined as CAVI ≥ 9.0. RESULTS Current smoker showed higher ABSI than never smokers after propensity score matching. Cumulative cigarette consumption expressed in pack-years correlated with ABSI (Rs: 0.312 in men, 0.252 in women), and was also extracted as an independent factor associated with ABSI by multiple regression analysis. A linear relationship between pack-year and CAVI was observed (Rs: 0.544 in men, 0.423 in women). Pack-year had almost equal discriminatory power in predicting high CAVI in both sexes (C-statistic: 0.774 in men, 0.747 in women), and the best cut-offs of pack-year for high CAVI were 24.5 in men and 14.7 in women. Bivariate logistic regression models revealed that the association between pack-year higher than cut-off and high CAVI was independent of traditional risks. A mediating effect of ABSI (mediation rate: 9.9% in men and 11.2% in women), but not waist circumference (WC), on the association of pack-year with CAVI was observed, after adjusting for traditional risks. CONCLUSION Cumulative cigarette smoking in pack-years was independently associated with ABSI. ABSI partially mediates the association between pack-year and CAVI, suggesting that abdominal obesity partially mediates smoking-related vascular dysfunction.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Aging is the main factor in the eventual development of cardiovascular disease (CVD) the prevalence of which is increasing progressively along with life expectancy. Therefore, it is essential to identify the most effective indicators for predicting the possible development of CVD. Anthropometric indices provide useful information for CVD risk evaluation. These are widely used for the simplicity of their estimates and their high correlation in the positive identification of CVD. The most used in the general population are the body mass index (BMI), the waist to hip ratio (WHR) and waist to height ratio (WHtR), body adiposity index (BAI) and conicity index (CI). However, the behavior and association of such indices in physically active people over 65 years of age is not well established. PURPOSE To analyze the behavior and association of the BMI, WHR, WHtR, BAI and CI in a group of active people over 65 years of age. METHODS A group of 608 European participants with a mean age of 68.05 ± 5.43yrs, composed of 74.2% female and 28.5% male, was randomly selected and evaluated for anthropometric parameters and body composition by a bio-impedance measuring device with four electrode sensor systems. A descriptive analysis was completed via measures of central tendency (mean and standard deviation) and percentage analysis. As the distribution of the sample was normal (parametric), an association analysis was carried out through the Pearson correlation coefficient (r), in order to determine the relationship between anthropometric and body composition indices. A P value of <0.05 was considered to indicate statistical significance. RESULTS The results show that BMI, BAI and WHtR are significantly related to % body fat (Fat %), with BMI reaching the highest correlation (r = 0.612), followed by BAI (r = 0.556) and WHtR (r = 0.521). When the association between indices is considered, the WHtR and BAI and WHtR and BMI are those with the highest significant correlation (r = 0.981 and r = 0,789, respectively). As for the effects of gender, good to strong correlations were found between the BMI and the WHtR (r = 0.731 for female, r = 0.568 for male) and between the WHtR and the BAI (r = 0.989 for female, r = 0.985 for male). CONCLUSION The most accurate anthropometric index for indicating the level of body fat present in an active population of 65 years of age or over seems to be the BMI, followed by the BAI and WHtR. However, the degree of association between body fat and anthropometric parameters seems to be conditioned by gender.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The diagnostic criteria for abdominal obesity are usually waist circumference or waist-to-hip ratio. The magnitude of the risks for cancers of the digestive system and abdominal obesity is unknown. To assess whether abdominal obesity increases the risk of digestive cancer, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of prospective cohort studies in a database. METHODS PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science databases were searched from their inception to December 2022. The 9-star Newcastle Ottawa Scale was used to assess study quality. Pooled relative risks and 95% confidence intervals were calculated using fixed or random effect models respectively. The stability of the results was explored by one-by-one exclusion. Subgroup analysis was conducted to explore sources of heterogeneity. Publication bias was evaluated by Begg's and Egger's tests. RESULTS A total of 43 cohort studies were included. There were 42 and 31 studies in the meta-analysis of waist circumference and waist-to-hip ratio on digestive system cancer, respectively. The results of the meta-analysis revealed that the greater waist circumference and waist-to-hip ratio were correlated with increased incidence of digestive system cancers: waist circumference: RR 1.48, 95% CI 1.38-1.59, p < 0.001; waist-to-hip ratio: RR 1.33, 95% CI 1.28-1.38, p = 0.001. Subgroup analysis by cancer type showed that higher WC and WHR would increase the prevalence of LC, PC, GC, EC, and CRC. The sensitivity analysis was conducted by a one-by-one elimination method, and the results of the meta-analysis remained stable. It is proved that the results were robust by the trim-and-fill method. CONCLUSIONS There was evidence to suggest that abdominal obesity increased the incidence of digestive cancer, it is necessary to take appropriate measures to reduce abdominal obesity. Waist circumference and waist-to-hip ratio may be better predictors of digestive system cancers. However, the association between waist circumference and digestive system cancer was greater, so more attention should be paid to measuring abdominal obesity with waist circumference.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cognitive frailty and abdominal obesity are deemed to be important targets for disease prevention. However, a possible cardiometabolic multimorbidity (CMM) link with cognitive frailty and abdominal obesity is unknown. The aim of this study was to investigate the association of cognitive frailty and abdominal obesity with CMM in the middle-aged and older people. METHODS The sample comprised 11,503 participants aged 45 and over from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) 2011. Cognitive frailty was defined as the coexisting cognitive impairment and physical frailty. Abdominal obesity was assessed using waist circumference. CMM was defined as the presence of two or more cardiometabolic diseases (CMDs), including diabetes, heart disease, and stroke. A total of 9177 participants without CMM recruited from CHARLS 2011 and were followed up in 2018. RESULTS Compared with 0 CMD, coexisting cognitive frailty and abdominal obesity was associated with the risk of 1 CMD (OR: 1.734, 95 % CI: 1.133-2.655), and ≥ 2 CMDs (OR: 7.218, 95%CI: 3.216-16.198). Longitudinal analysis showed that individuals with both cognitive frailty and abdominal obesity (HR: 2.162, 95%CI: 1.032-4.531) were more likely to have new onset CMM than cognitive frailty alone peers (HR: 1.667, 95 % CI: 0.721-3.853). Among the participants with first CMD, the likelihood of CMM was substantially higher in the co-existence of cognitive frailty and abdominal obesity (HR: 3.073, 95%CI: 1.254-7.527) than in the abdominal obesity alone (HR: 1.708, 95%CI: 1.201-2.427). Cognitive frailty alone was not significantly associated with CMM. CONCLUSION Cognitive frailty is not independently associated with the risk of CMM, but cognitive frailty and abdominal obesity together has a greater risk of CMM.

Abstract
PURPOSE This cross-sectional study evaluated how neck circumference (NC) influences the association between abdominal obesity (AO) and insulin resistance (IR) while considering relative handgrip strength (RHGS) in middle-aged and older people. METHODS Using data from the 2019 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey for 3804 Korean adults aged 40-80 years, AO (waist circumference [WC] ≥90 cm for men, ≥85 cm for women), large NC (sex-specific highest 5th quintile), weak RHGS (sex-specific 1st quintile of HGS/body mass index), and IR (homeostasis model assessment of IR [HOMA-IR] ≥2.5) were defined. A complex sample general linear model and logistic regression analyses were performed after adjusting for confounding factors. RESULTS As NC increased, the relationship between WC and HOMA-IR increased (p for interaction <0.001). In the group with AO, large NC, or both, the adjusted odds ratio (AOR) for IR increased in the group with weak RHGS than in the group with normal RHGS. In the group with normal NC, the AOR for IR in those with AO (vs. those without AO) was 3.3 (95% confidence interval, 2.6-4.3) even after controlling for RHGS; however, the AOR was 5.3 (95% confidence interval, 2.7-10.4) in the group with large NC. These relationships of WC, NC, and RHGS with IR were comparable across sex and age groups. CONCLUSIONS Large NC increased the association between AO and IR independent of RHGS and the relationships between large NC and AO and insulin resistance varied according to RHGS.

Abstract
Background The abdominal obesity trends and prevalence are important contributing factors to significant rise of many noncommunicable diseases in Vietnam but have not been well-documented in the literature. This study aimed to describe the prevalence and trends of obesity and abdominal obesity in Vietnam from 2009 to 2015 and evaluate how different definitions of obesity and abdominal obesity are associated with metabolic-related conditions. Methods We conducted a secondary analysis based on the Vietnam STEPS (STEPwise approach to Surveillance) cross-sectional Survey 2009 and 2015. Obesity and abdominal obesity were defined using the body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), and waist-hip ratio (WHR) cut-offs from the World Health Organization (WHO) and International Diabetes Federation (IDF). Findings Depending on the specific cut-offs, from 2009 to 2015, obesity prevalence increased from 0.8%-10% to 1.7%-16.4% in women and from 0.8%-10.3% to 1.7%-15% in men; abdominal obesity prevalence increased from 3%-31.3% to 8%-41.7% in women and from 0.3%-19.3% to 0.4%-25% in men. Abdominal obesity using WC-IDF and WHR-WHO definitions had noticeably higher sensitivity and lower specificity for metabolic-related conditions compared to the other four criteria. All anthropometric measurements were statistically correlated with biomarkers/blood pressure in 2009 and 2015 except for fasting glucose. Only WC-IDF and WHR-WHO definitions showed consistent association with all reported metabolic-related conditions regardless of sex and survey years. Interpretation The prevalence of obesity and abdominal obesity in Vietnam is increasing rapidly, especially abdominal obesity in women regardless of the criteria used. More studies are needed to investigate how using different diagnostic criteria for obesity and abdominal obesity could better identify metabolic-related conditions. Abstract
BACKGROUND Sex differences in the longitudinal relationship between dynapenic abdominal obesity, i.e., impairment in muscle strength and high waist circumference, and disability in activities of daily living have not been investigated to date. Therefore, we aimed to examine sex differences in the longitudinal association between dynapenic abdominal obesity at baseline and the onset of disability in activities of daily living during a four-year follow-up period among Irish adults aged ≥50 years. METHODS Data from Wave 1 (2009-2011) and Wave 3 (2014-2015) of the Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing survey were analyzed. Dynapenia was defined as handgrip strength of <26 kg for men and <16 kg for women. Abdominal obesity was defined as waist circumference of >88 cm for women and >102 cm for men. Dynapenic abdominal obesity was defined as having both dynapenia and abdominal obesity. Disability was defined as having difficulty with at least one of six activities of daily living (dressing, walking, bathing, eating, getting in or out of bed, using the toilet). Multivariable logistic regression was conducted to assess associations. RESULTS Data on 4471 individuals aged ≥50 years and free of disability at baseline were analyzed [mean (SD) age 62.3 (8.6) years; 48.3 % males]. In the overall sample, compared to no dynapenia and no abdominal obesity, dynapenic abdominal obesity was associated with 2.15 (95%CI = 1.17-3.93) times higher odds for incident disability at 4-year follow-up. This association was significant among men (OR = 3.78; 95%CI = 1.70-8.38) but not among women (OR = 1.34; 95%CI = 0.60-2.98). CONCLUSIONS Interventions to prevent or address dynapenic abdominal obesity may aid in the prevention of disability, especially among men.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS To investigate whether non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in individuals without generalized obesity is associated with visceral fat obesity (VFO), sarcopenia, and/or myosteatosis. METHODS This cross-sectional analysis included 14,400 individuals (7,470 men) who underwent abdominal computed tomography scans during routine health examinations. The total abdominal muscle area (TAMA) and skeletal muscle area (SMA) at the 3rd lumbar vertebral level were measured. The SMA was divided into the normal attenuation muscle area (NAMA) and low attenuation muscle area, and the NAMA/TAMA index was calculated. VFO was defined by visceral to subcutaneous fat ratio, sarcopenia by body mass index-adjusted SMA, and myosteatosis by the NAMA/TAMA index. NAFLD was diagnosed with ultrasonography. RESULTS Of the 14,400 individuals, 4,748 (33.0%) had NAFLD, and the prevalence of NAFLD among non-obese individuals was 21.4%. In regression analysis, both sarcopenia (men: odds ratio [OR] 1.41, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.19-1.67, P<0.001; women: OR=1.59, 95% CI 1.40-1.90, P<0.001) and myosteatosis (men: OR=1.24, 95% CI 1.02-1.50, P=0,028; women: OR=1.23, 95% CI 1.04-1.46, P=0.017) were significantly associated with non-obese NAFLD after considering for VFO and other various risk factors, whereas VFO (men: OR=3.97, 95% CI 3.43-4.59 [adjusted for sarcopenia], OR 3.98, 95% CI 3.44-4.60 [adjusted for myosteatosis]; women: OR=5.42, 95% CI 4.53-6.42 [adjusted for sarcopenia], OR=5.33, 95% CI 4.51-6.31 [adjusted for myosteatosis]; all P<0.001) was strongly associated with non-obese NAFLD after adjustment with various known risk factors. CONCLUSION In addition to VFO, sarcopenia and/or myosteatosis were significantly associated with non-obese NAFLD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To identify factors associated with general and abdominal obesity in middle-aged and older Korean women based on the biopsychosocial model. METHODS Data from 4,076 women aged ≥45 years who participated in the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2015 to 2020 were analyzed. Complex sampling analysis was performed using IBM SPSS ver. 26.0. RESULTS The combination of general and abdominal obesity was positively associated with age ≥65 years, postmenopausal status, and without breastfeeding experience among biomedical factors; depressive symptoms and prolonged (≥8 hours a day) sedentary behavior among psychosocial factors; and an educational level lower than middle or high school graduation and the first and second income quantiles among biosocial factors. CONCLUSION Healthcare providers in communities and public societies should screen for risk factors for the combination of general and abdominal obesity while considering non-modifiable biomedical (e.g., age) and biosocial factors (e.g., educational level). In addition, intervention strategies should be developed by considering modifiable psychosocial factors such as sedentary behavior.

Abstract
OBJETIVES To determine the prevalence of erectile lower urinary tract symptoms in hypertensive patients, cardiovascular risk and the impact on quality of life. MATERIAL AND METHODS Setting: Health Center (Vilagarcia, Pontevedra). PERIOD April 2015-June 2017. INCLUSION CRITERIA Hypertensive patient with informed consent. MEASUREMENTS sociodemographic variables, toxic habits, comorbidity, blood pressure, cardiovascular risk, analytical and examination parameters. Questionaries: International Prostate Symptom Scale (IPSS), International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF-15) and quality of life in arterial hypertension (MINICHAL). SAMPLE SIZE n=262 (± 6% accuracy, 95% confidence). STATISTICAL ANALYSIS Bivariate and multivariate statistical analysis. Informed consent and ethics committee approval were obtained (2024/237) RESULTS: The mean age was 65.84 (12.70), and mean hypertension duration of 13.25 (9.84) years. 76.7% reported lower tract urinary symptoms, 91.6% being mild. The bivariate analysis showed an association with the variables: age, educational level, profession, work activity, tobacco, benign prostatic hypertrophy, years of diagnosis, concomitant medication, Framingham-Wilson score, electrocardiogram, glycated hemoglobin, glomerular filtration (Crockroft-Gault), LDL-cholesterol, somatic manifestations (MINICHAL), erectile dysfunction. The multivariate analysis showed increased risk with:abdominal obesity, pathological electrocardiogram, high risk of Framingham-Wilson score, erectile dysfunction, use of hypouricemics agents and decreased with not smoking and use diuretics. CONCLUSIONS Three quarters of hypertensive men presented lower urinary tract symptoms, increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease early according to the Framingham-Wilson score. Other predictive factors were: abdominal obesity, tobacco, pathological electrocardiogram, high Framingham-Wilson score, erectile dysfunction, use of hypouricemics agents.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Vitamin D deficiency has been reported to affect liver function biomarkers. This study was aimed to investigate the effect of consuming vitamin D fortified low-fat dairy products on liver function tests in adults with abdominal obesity. METHODS This total blinded randomized controlled trial was undertaken on otherwise healthy abdominally obese adults living in Mashhad, Iran. Milk and yogurt were fortified with 1500 IU vitamin D3 nano-capsules. Participants were randomized to receive fortified milk (n = 73), plain milk (n = 73), fortified yogurt (n = 69), and plain yogurt (n = 74) for 10 weeks. Blood samples were taken at baseline and at the end of the study to assess serum levels of vitamin D, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and Gamma glutamyl transferase. RESULTS A total of 289 participants completed the study (54% female). The groups were homogenous in terms of age, sex, weight, energy intake, and physical activity level (p-value > 0.05). After the trial, vitamin D serum levels were significantly increased in both groups receiving fortified products (both p < 0.001). There was a significant time*group effect only in serum ALP (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION Consumption of dairy products fortified by 1500 IU vitamin D3 might have detrimental effects on serum levels of some liver enzymes in individuals with abdominal obesity. Further studies needed to determine these effects and underlying mechanisms. TRIAL REGISTRATION IRCT20101130005280N27 .

Abstract
BACKGROUND Obesity is a crucial risk factor for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), but the association between adiposity deposition and OSA risk has not reached a consistent conclusion. This study sought to reveal the association of multiple adiposity indicators with OSA risk. METHODS This cross-sectional study included 9,733 participants aged 35-74 years, recruited from an ongoing population-based cohort. OSA was assessed by the Berlin Questionnaire. Six adiposity indicators, including neck circumference (NC), body fat percentage (BF%), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), visceral adiposity index (VAI), lipid accumulation product (LAP), and resting metabolic rate (RMR), were selected. Multivariate logistic regression models were used to examine the association of adiposity indicators with OSA risk. RESULTS One thousand six hundred twenty-six participants (16.71%) were classified into the OSA group. NC, BF%, WHR, VAI, LAP, and RMR were all positively associated with the risk of OSA after adjusting for confounders, regardless of age, sex, and history of dyslipidemia. Every 1-unit increment of NC, BF%, and VAI was associated with a 13%, 9%, and 14% increased risk of OSA, respectively; every 0.01-unit increment of WHR was associated with a 3% increased risk of OSA; every 10-unit increment of LAP and RMR was associated with 2% and 4% increased risk of OSA, respectively. CONCLUSIONS NC, BF%, WHR, VAI, LAP, and RMR were all independently and positively associated with OSA risk, regardless of age, sex, history of dyslipidemia, and menopausal status. Application of these new indicators could help to more comprehensively reflect and predict the risk of OSA in the general population.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The dietary inflammatory index (DII) is associated with numerous chronic noncommunicable diseases. Previous studies have shown that the pro-inflammatory DII categories are associated with abdominal and simple obesity. However, the association between DII and mortality in patients with abdominal obesity and simple overweight or obesity remains unclear. METHODS We used data from the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2007 to 2018. A DII >0 (positive DII) was defined as a pro-inflammatory diet. A restricted cubic spline curve was used to describe the trend between DII and all-cause mortality. We then examined the association between DII and all-cause mortality in different body types using a Cox regression analysis and investigated the differences between sexes. Finally, the mediating effects of systemic inflammation were explored. RESULTS A pro-inflammatory diet increased all-cause mortality in adults with abdominal obesity (aHR: 1.31, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.11-1.54; p < 0.001) and with simple overweight or obesity (aHR: 1.30, 95% CI: 1.11-1.53; p < 0.001). In addition, the most pro-inflammatory DII increased the risk of mortality by 43% (hazard ratio [HR]: Q4 vs. Q1 = 1.43, 95% CI = 1.14-1.79; p = 0.002; p for trend = 0.003) and 39% (HR: Q4 vs. Q1 = 1.39, 95% CI = 1.13-1.74; p = 0.003; p for trend = 0.009) in participants with abdominal obesity and with simple overweight or obesity, respectively. However, this association was not present in normal-sized participants. Compared with men, women resisted the effects of a pro-inflammatory diet. Mediation analysis showed that white blood cell and neutrophil were mediators of the association between DII and all-cause mortality (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION A pro-inflammatory diet is associated with all-cause mortality in adults with abdominal obesity and simple overweight or obesity, and this effect differs between men and women. Systemic inflammation may mediate the association between DII and all-cause mortality.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Chrononutrition is an emerging area that suggests that late eating time is associated with poor nutritional and metabolic outcomes. However, epidemiological studies are scarce on this topic. The aim of this study was to characterize the chrononutrition patterns in a large and representative US population (NHANES 2015-2016 and 2017-2018) of adults and elderly and investigate their association with obesity and metabolic disorders that make up the metabolic syndrome. METHODS A total of 7379 adults and elderly individuals were included in the analysis. Meal timing data were collected through two 24-h dietary recalls in both cycles. Poisson regression adjusted for confounders was used to evaluate the association between chrononutrition variables (eating duration and tertiles of first and last meal timing, eating midpoint and eating occasions) and obesity, abdominal obesity and metabolic parameters from metabolic syndrome. RESULTS Adults with a longer eating duration (>12 h) had a higher prevalence of abdominal obesity (IRR, 1.15; 95% CI, 1.03-1.28) when compared with those who ate their meals in a shorter eating duration (≤12 h). In addition, adults in the third tertile of the time of the last meal (mean 22:03) had a higher prevalence of abdominal obesity (IRR, 1.12; 95% CI, 1.01-1.25) compared to first tertile. Adults with later eating midpoints (second and third tertile) had a higher prevalence of elevated fasting glucose (IRR, 1.30; 95% CI, 1.07-1.59 and IRR, 1.65; 95% CI, 1.22-2.22, respectively). Among the elderly, participants with a longer eating duration (>12 h) had a higher prevalence of elevated triglycerides (IRR, 2.74; 95% CI, 1.25-5.96) when compared with those elderly who ate their meals in a shorter eating duration (≤12 h). CONCLUSION These findings suggest that a long eating duration and late first and last meal timing are chrononutrition patterns associated with cardiometabolic risks in free-living Americans.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We investigated the associations between obesity parameters and the risk of hyperuricemia among Korean adults by sex, age, and diabetes mellitus status. METHODS This study analyzed data from 17,753 adults from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) 2016-2018. Multivariable logistic regression analyses were conducted to examine the associations of body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), and general and abdominal obesity with the risk of hyperuricemia (serum uric acid ≥7.0 mg/dL in men and ≥6.0 mg/dL in women). RESULTS Of all the participants, 12.7% (n = 2256) had hyperuricemia. The age-adjusted mean serum uric acid levels increased significantly with increasing BMI and WC (P for trend <0.001). The adjusted odds ratios (ORs) of hyperuricemia increased as BMI and WC increased in both sexes (P for trend <0.001). General (OR 1.98, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.69-2.32) and abdominal (OR 2.21, 95% CI: 1.89-2.58) obesity in men and general (OR 3.26, 95% CI: 2.60-4.09) and abdominal (OR 3.43, 95% CI: 2.69-4.37) obesity in women were associated with higher risks of hyperuricemia. These associations were prominent in women. The association between abdominal obesity and hyperuricemia persisted after additional adjustments for BMI in both sexes. Significant interactions were observed in younger adults and individuals without diabetes mellitus. CONCLUSION Increased BMI and WC, and general and abdominal obesity, may be important risk factors for hyperuricemia in both sexes. Women, young adults, and individuals without diabetes mellitus require particular attention to prevent obesity and hyperuricemia.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Although elevated body mass index (BMI) is a risk factor for stroke, it appears to protect against recurrent vascular events. We tried to evaluate BMI and waist circumference (WC) as predictors of recurrent stroke and vascular events in a cohort of stroke survivors who were followed for 12 months. MATERIALS AND METHODS We analyzed the stroke registry database of 6 hospitals and recruited patients with a first-ever stroke who were admitted from January 2011 to November 2019 and had their BMI and WC measured. Cox proportional hazards models were used to compare risks of recurrent stroke and major vascular events (a composite of stroke, myocardial infarction, or vascular death) between different BMI and WC quintiles. Reference categories were patients in the lowest quintiles. RESULTS A total of 14 781 patients were analyzed. Patients in the second quintile of BMI had the lowest risk of recurrent stroke (adjusted hazard ratio (HR) 0.72; 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.58-0.91); patients in the highest quintile had the lowest risk or a major vascular event (adjusted HR 0.71; 95% CI 0.58-0.86). Patients in the fourth quintile of WC had the lowest risk of recurrent stroke (adjusted HR 0.73; 95% CI 0.59-0.91) and a major vascular event (adjusted HR 0.72; 95 % CI 0.60-0.86). CONCLUSIONS Our results show favorable effects of excess body weight and intra-abdominal fat on avoidance of vascular events after stroke and a favorable effect of intra-abdominal fat on avoidance of recurrent stroke.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Abdominal obesity and decreased muscle strength are risk factors for individuals on hemodialysis. Thus, the combination of these two factors known as dynapenic abdominal obesity acts as an important marker of the nutritional status of this population. Therefore, the objective of the work was to investigate the association between abdominal obesity, dynapenia, and sociodemographic, clinical, and nutritional factors in individuals with chronic kidney disease undergoing hemodialysis. METHODS AND RESULTS Cross-sectional study with 940 individuals undergoing hemodialysis in southeastern Brazil. Dynapenic abdominal obesity was defined by the combination of the presence of abdominal obesity, indicated by the waist-to-height ratio, and the reduction in muscle strength, measured by handgrip strength. Binary logistic regression was performed to calculate the odds ratio (OR) and the respective confidence intervals (95% CI). Dynapenic abdominal obesity was present in 45.42% of the study population. We found that being 18-59 years (OR: 3.17; 95% CI 2.35-4.28; p < 0.001) and being overweight (OR: 2.58; 95% CI 1.92-3.47; p < 0.001) increased the chances for the presence of dynapenic abdominal obesity; however, the habit of consuming meals away from home (OR: 0.63; 95% CI 0.47-0.85; p = 0.003) and having preserved behavioral adductor muscle thickness (OR: 0.52; 95% CI 0.38-0.71; p < 0.001) are considered protective factors. CONCLUSION Dynapenic abdominal obesity, present in individuals on hemodialysis, may represent a valid nutritional tool for assessing cardiovascular risk and mortality in this population, in order to implement the most effective preventive and/or therapeutic intervention possible.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Abdominal obesity has long been considered as a crucial risk factor of stroke. Chinese visceral adiposity index (CVAI), a novel surrogate indicator of abdominal obesity, has been confirmed as a better predictor for coronary heart disease than other indicators in Asian population. However, the data on the relationship of CVAI with stroke is limited. The objective of our study is evaluating the relationship between CVAI and stroke incidence. METHODS In the present study, we enrolled 7242 middle-aged and elderly residents from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) and placed them into groups according to quartile of CVAI. The outcome of interest was stroke. Kaplan-Meier curves were used to estimate the cumulative incidences of stroke. Cox regression analyses and multivariable-adjusted restricted cubic spline (RCS) curves were performed to evaluate the relationship between CVAI and incident stroke. Multiple sensitivity analyses and subgroups analyses were performed to test the robustness of the findings. RESULTS During a median 84 months of follow-up, 612 (8.45%) participants experienced incident stroke, and the incidences of stroke for participants in quartiles (Q) 1-4 of CVAI were 4.42%, 7.29%, 9.06% and 13.04%, respectively. In the fully adjusted model, per 1.0-SD increment in CVAI has a significant increased risk of incident stroke: hazard ratio (HR) [95% confidence interval (CI)] was 1.17 (1.07-1.28); compared with participants in Q1 of CVAI, the HRs (95% CI) of incident stroke among those in Q2-4 were 1.47 (1.10-1.95), 1.62 (1.22-2.15), and 1.70 (1.28-2.27), respectively. Subgroups analyses suggested the positive association was significant in male participants, without diabetes, hypertension and heart disease. The findings were robust in all the sensitivity analyses. Additional, RCS curves showed a significant dose-response relationship of CVAI with risk of incident stroke (P for non-linear trend = 0.319). CONCLUSION Increased CVAI is significantly associated with higher risk of stroke incidence, especially in male individuals, without hypertension, diabetes and heart disease. The findings suggest that baseline CVAI is a reliable and effective biomarker for risk stratification of stroke, which has far-reaching significance for primary prevention of stroke and public health.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION We aimed to evaluate the relationships between hepatic steatosis and various indices of obesity, and to identify the most useful index for the prediction of hepatic steatosis in children and adolescents with obesity. METHODS A total of 226 children and adolescents with a mean body mass index (BMI) z-score of 2.65 and a mean age of 11.4 years were subjected to anthropometric and body composition measurements, laboratory testing, abdominal fat mass assessment, and hepatic fat accumulation by magnetic resonance imaging-derived proton density fat fraction (MRI-PDFF). The participants were divided into quartiles according to the severity of their hepatic steatosis, and the presence of hepatic steatosis was defined using an MRI-PDFF ≥ 5%. RESULTS The multivariate ordinal regression analysis showed that the severity of hepatic steatosis was positively associated with BMI, waist circumference, waist-to-hip ratio, waist-to-height ratio, fat mass, fat-free mass, visceral adiposity, and abdominal subcutaneous adiposity. Higher activities of liver enzymes and higher concentrations of triglyceride, C-reactive protein, fasting insulin, and leptin were associated with more severe hepatic steatosis, whereas high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol and adiponectin were negatively associated with hepatic steatosis. The indices of obesity with areas under the receiver operating characteristic curves (AUCs) > 0.8 for the prediction of hepatic steatosis were liver enzymes, visceral adipose tissue area, waist-to-hip ratio, and waist-to-height ratio. CONCLUSION The severity of hepatic steatosis significantly correlated with various indices of obesity and cardiometabolic markers in children and adolescents with obesity. The indices of abdominal obesity would be the most useful for the prediction of hepatic steatosis.
