Hierarchically Ordered Tubular Titanium Dioxide Electrodes: Preparation, Electrochemical Characterization, and Application as a Bifunctional Catalyst

In Situ Grown CoMn2 O4 3D-Tetragons on Carbon Cloth: Flexible Electrodes for Efficient Rechargeable Zinc-Air Battery Powered Water Splitting Systems

The integration of energy conversion and storage systems such as electrochemical water splitting (EWS) and rechargeable zinc-air battery (ZAB) is on the vision to provide a sustainable future with green energy resources. Herein, a unique strategy for decorating 3D tetragonal CoMn₂ O₄ on carbon cloth (CMO-U@CC) via a facile one-pot in situ hydrothermal process, is reported. The highly exposed morphology of 3D tetragons enhances the electrocatalytic activity of CMO-U@CC. This is the first demonstration of such a bifunctional activity of CMO-U@CC in an EWS system; it achieves a nominal cell voltage of 1.610 V @ 10 mA cm^-2 . Similarly, the fabricated rechargeable ZAB delivers a specific capacity of 641.6 mAh g_zn ^-1 , a power density of 135 mW cm^-2 , and excellent cyclic stability (50 h @ 10 mA cm^-2 ). Additionally, a series of flexible solid-state ZABs are fabricated and employed to power the assembled CMO-U@CC-based water electrolyzer. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first demonstration of an in situ-grown binder-free CMO-U@CC as a flexible multifunctional electrocatalyst for a built-in integrated rechargeable ZAB-powered EWS system.

Fluorinated Reduced Graphene Oxide-Encapsulated ZnO Hollow Sphere Composite as an Efficient Photocatalyst with Increased Charge-Carrier Mobility

Zinc oxide (ZnO) hollow spheres were prepared by the hydrothermal method and encapsulated with fluorinated reduced graphene oxide (FRGO) using a tetra- n-butylammonium bromide (TBAB) linker to give an FRGO/ZnO composite. X-ray diffraction and microscopic studies revealed their hexagonal-wurtzite structure, spherical morphology, and size of the crystallite to be 26.7 nm. Diffuse reflectance UV-visible spectroscopy showed an optical band gap and semiconductive nature of the composite. Atomic force microscopy images show the surface topography of FRGO-encapsulated ZnO hollow spheres. The photoluminescence spectra depicted the electron-hole pair recombination order to be ZnO > RGO/ZnO > FRGO/ZnO. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) demonstrates the increased charge-carrier mobility of the FRGO/ZnO composite; the R_ct values of ZnO, RGO/ZnO, and FRGO/ZnO were found to be 6.18 × 10³, 4.07 × 10³, and 3.45 × 10³ Ω, respectively. All the three materials were employed as photocatalysts in the degradation of methylene blue under UV-365 nm radiation and the results exposed the higher photocatalytic activity of reduced fluorinated graphene oxide/ZnO than RGO/ZnO and bare ZnO hollow spheres. The increased photocatalytic activity of the composite is due to the enhanced vectorial transport of charge carriers at the interface of the FRGO/ZnO composite and suppression of charge-carrier recombination. The presence of fluorine in the RGO sheet introduces additional defects and leverages heterogeneous electron transport. In turn, mobility of light-generated charge carriers is increased and results in suppression of their recombination, which facilitates the photocatalytic process.

Multifunctional nanostructured electrocatalysts for energy conversion and storage: current status and perspectives

Electrocatalytic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) have attracted widespread attention because of their important role in the application of various energy storage and conversion devices, such as fuel cells, metal-air batteries and water splitting devices. However, the sluggish kinetics of the HER/OER/ORR and their dependency on expensive noble metal catalysts (e.g., Pt) obstruct their large-scale application. Hence, the development of efficient and robust bifunctional or trifunctional electrocatalysts in nanodimension for both oxygen reduction/evolution and hydrogen evolution reactions is highly desired and challenging for their commercialization in renewable energy technologies. This review describes some recent developments in the discovery of bifunctional or trifunctional nanostructured catalysts with improved performances for application in rechargeable metal-air batteries and fuel cells. The role of the electronic structure and surface redox chemistry of nanocatalysts in the improvement of their performance for the ORR/OER/HER under an alkaline medium is highlighted and the associated reaction mechanisms developed in the recent literature are also summarized.
