Phosphorus-Doping Enables the Superior Durability of a Palladium Electrocatalyst towards Alkaline Oxygen Reduction Reactions

The sluggish kinetics of oxygen reduction reactions (ORRs) require considerable Pd in the cathode, hindering the widespread of alkaline fuel cells (AFCs). By alloying Pd with transition metals, the oxygen reduction reaction's catalytic properties can be substantially enhanced. Nevertheless, the utilization of Pd-transition metal alloys in fuel cells is significantly constrained by their inadequate long-term durability due to the propensity of transition metals to leach. In this study, a nonmetallic doping strategy was devised and implemented to produce a Pd catalyst doped with P that exhibited exceptional durability towards ORRs. Pd3P0.95 with an average size of 6.41 nm was synthesized by the heat-treatment phosphorization of Pd nanoparticles followed by acid etching. After P-doping, the size of the Pd nanoparticles increased from 5.37 nm to 6.41 nm, and the initial mass activity (MA) of Pd3P0.95/NC reached 0.175 A mgPd-1 at 0.9 V, slightly lower than that of Pd/C. However, after 40,000 cycles of accelerated durability testing, instead of decreasing, the MA of Pd3P0.95/NC increased by 6.3% while the MA loss of Pd/C was 38.3%. The durability was primarily ascribed to the electronic structure effect and the aggregation resistance of the Pd nanoparticles. This research also establishes a foundation for the development of Pd-based ORR catalysts and offers a direction for the future advancement of catalysts designed for practical applications in AFCs.

Kinetically Controlled Direct Synthesis of B2- and A1-Structured Cu-Pd Nanoparticles

Atomic arrangement in Cu-Pd alloy nanoparticles (NPs) has been reported to influence the catalytic activity, but they have yet to be studied in detail. Unlike previous studies, where the B2 structure Cu-Pd NPs are obtained by heat treating the A1 structure, this study reports the one-pot direct syntheses of A1- and B2-structured Cu-Pd NPs using an alcohol reduction method. The alcohol reduction technique facilitates the kinetic control of the reduction reaction by selecting the appropriate alcohol type and complexing agent to delay the reduction of easily reducible metallic elements to realize control over the reduction kinetics for coreduction. Different formation mechanisms for A1- and B2-structured CuPd NPs were confirmed by in situ ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) measurements and morphological and structural analyses of samples withdrawn during the reaction. Finally, the direct formation of single-phase B2-structured Cu-Pd NPs with an average diameter of 18.6 ± 7.6 nm was realized using tri-n-octyl phosphine as a complexing agent. The noticeable crystal structural dependence of the electrocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction properties of A1- and B2-structured CuPd NPs was demonstrated.

One-Pot Synthesis of Pt Nanobowls Assembled from Ultrafine Nanoparticles for Methanol Oxidation Reaction

Simultaneously engineering a bowl-like and ultrafine nano-size structure offers an attractive route to not only increase the utilization efficiency of noble metals, the specific surface areas and the availability of active sites, but also boost the structural robustness and long-term stability. However, a great challenge remains in terms of the methods of synthesis. Herein, we report a facile one-pot hydrothermal method for the preparation of hollow porous Pt nanobowls (NBs) assembled from ultrafine particles. N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide (MBAA) acts as a structure-directing agent that forms a self-template with Pt ions and drives the nucleation and assembly of Pt metals, resulting in the fabrication of Pt NBs from ultrafine particles. By virtue of their unique structure and morphology, the optimized Pt NBs exhibited enhanced electrocatalytic methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) activity with 3.1-fold greater mass activity and 2.6-fold greater specific activities compared with those of commercial Pt black catalysts, as well as excellent stability and anti-poisoning ability.

Pt-Free Metal Nanocatalysts for the Oxygen Reduction Reaction Combining Experiment and Theory: An Overview

The design and manufacture of highly efficient nanocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is key to achieve the massive use of proton exchange membrane fuel cells. Up to date, Pt nanocatalysts are widely used for the ORR, but they have various disadvantages such as high cost, limited activity and partial stability. Therefore, different strategies have been implemented to eliminate or reduce the use of Pt in the nanocatalysts for the ORR. Among these, Pt-free metal nanocatalysts have received considerable relevance due to their good catalytic activity and slightly lower cost with respect to Pt. Consequently, nowadays, there are outstanding advances in the design of novel Pt-free metal nanocatalysts for the ORR. In this direction, combining experimental findings and theoretical insights is a low-cost methodology—in terms of both computational cost and laboratory resources—for the design of Pt-free metal nanocatalysts for the ORR in acid media. Therefore, coupled experimental and theoretical investigations are revised and discussed in detail in this review article.
