The Structural and Electrochemical Properties of CuCoO2 Crystalline Nanopowders and Thin Films: Conductivity Experimental Analysis and Insights from Density Functional Theory Calculations

A novel manufacturing process is presented for producing nanopowders and thin films of CuCoO2 (CCO) material. This process utilizes three cost-effective synthesis methods: hydrothermal, sol-gel, and solid-state reactions. The resulting delafossite CuCoO2 samples were deposited onto transparent substrates through spray pyrolysis, forming innovative thin films with a nanocrystal powder structure. Prior to the transformation into thin films, CuCoO2 powder was first produced using a low-cost approach. The precursors for both powders and thin films were deposited onto glass surfaces using a spray pyrolysis process, and their characteristics were examined through X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, HR-TEM, UV-visible spectrophotometry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) analyses were conducted to determine the conductivity in the transversal direction of this groundbreaking material for solar cell applications. On the other hand, the sheet resistance of the samples was investigated using the four-probe method to obtain the sheet resistivity and then calculate the in-plane conductivity of the samples. We also investigated the aging characteristics of different precursors with varying durations. The functional properties of CuCoO2 samples were explored by studying chelating agent and precursor solution aging periods using Density Functional Theory calculations (DFT). A complementary Density Functional Theory study was also performed in order to evaluate the electronic structure of this compound. Resuming, this study thoroughly discusses the synthesis of delafossite powders and their conversion into thin films, which hold potential as hole transport layers in transparent optoelectronic devices.

Rapid Processing of Whole Bamboo with Exposed, Aligned Nanofibrils toward a High-Performance Structural Material

Lightweight structural materials are critical in construction and automobile applications. In past centuries, there has been great success in developing strong structural materials, such as steels, concrete, and petroleum-based composites, most of which, however, are either too heavy, high cost, or nonrenewable. Biosourced composites are attractive alternatives to conventional structural materials, especially when high mechanical strength is presented. Here we demonstrate a strong, lightweight bio-based structural material derived from bamboo via a two-step manufacturing process involving partial delignification followed by microwave heating. Partial delignification is a critical step prior to microwave heating as it makes the cell walls of bamboo softer and exposes more cellulose nanofibrils, which enables superior densification of the bamboo structure via heat-driven shrinkage. Additionally, microwave heating, as a fast and uniform heating method, can drive water out of the bamboo structure, yet without destroying the material's structural integrity, even after undergoing a large volume reduction of 28.9%. The resulting microwave-heated delignified bamboo structure demonstrates outstanding mechanical properties with a nearly 2-times improved tensile strength, 3.2-times enhanced toughness, and 2-times increased bending strength compared to natural bamboo. Additionally, the specific tensile strength of the modified bamboo structure reaches 560 MPa cm³ g^-1, impressive given that its density is low (1.0 g cm^-3), outperforming common structural materials, such as steels, metal alloys, and petroleum-based composites. These excellent mechanical properties combined with the resource abundance, renewable and sustainable features of bamboo, as well as the rapid, scalable manufacturing process, make this strong microwave-processed bamboo structure attractive for lightweight, energy-efficient engineering applications.

Investigation of the structural, optical and electrical properties of Ca2+ doped CuCoO2 nanosheets

In this work, we present the hydrothermal synthesis of delafossite oxide Ca-doped CuCoO2 (CCCaO) nanosheets at a low temperature of 100 °C. The crystal phase, morphology and chemical composition of these CuCoO2 (CCO) based samples were comprehensively characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Raman spectroscopy. The size of CCCaO nanosheets decreased with increasing Ca dopant concentration, and the optimized CCCaO nanosheets (∼490 nm in lateral size and ∼15 nm in thickness) were much smaller than CCO nanocrystals (∼540 nm in lateral size and 85 nm in thickness). The specific surface area of these CCO based samples increased with increasing Ca content, and the optimized CCCaO nanosheets present a high BET surface area of 28 m2 g-1. XPS and Raman spectroscopy analyses indicate Ca2+ dopant substitution on the Cu+ site in CCCaO nanosheets. Moreover, the effects of Ca2+ doping on the optical and electrical properties of these CCO based samples were further studied. The optical properties measured at room temperature show high absorbability (up to 90%) in the ultraviolet-visible-near infrared (UV-VIS-NIR) region, and the indirect band gap shows a significant blue-shift with increasing Ca2+ concentration. The CCO nanocrystals possess a higher electrical conductivity than the CCCaO nanosheets, and present good conductivities of around 12.81, 4.47 and 0.69 s m-1 for the CCO and CCCaO samples at room temperature. The facile fabrication process, tunable crystallite sizes, and excellent optical absorption and electrical properties of these CCO based nanomaterials are encouraging for the development of future applications in photoelectric devices.

Scalable Synthesis Nano-Perovskite K(Mn0.95Ni0.05)F3 Cathode by Homogeneous Precipitation Method for Potassium-Ion Batteries

Potassium-ion batteries (KIBs) are favored by researchers because of the unique advantages. In this work, KIB cathode material nano-perovskite K(Mn_0.95Ni_0.05)F₃ with concentration gradient was synthesized by EDTA-assisted homogeneous precipitation method for the first time and characterized. The solid solution material was deposited on the multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) to form K(Mn_0.95Ni_0.05)F₃/MWCNT nanocomposites to improve the electron conductivity of the electrode material so as to obtain the excellent electrochemical performance. As expected, the charge and discharge capacities of K(Mn_0.95Ni_0.05)F₃/MWCNTs after the 60th cycle can still reach 106.8 and 98.5 mAh g^-1 over the voltage range 4.2-1.2 V vs. K/K⁺ at the current density of 35 mA g^-1, respectively. Electrochemical performance studies showed that solid solution K(Mn_0.95Ni_0.05)F₃ had the potential applications as the cathode material for KIBs. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was used to study the transport and reaction processes of ions at the solid-liquid interface. The main factors affecting electrochemical performance could be analyzed from the Nyquist plot of the EIS test.
