Superior Electrochemical Water Splitting and Energy-Storage Performances of In Situ Fabricated Charge-Separated Metal Organophosphonate Single Crystals

The design and exploration of advanced materials as a durable multifunctional electrocatalyst toward sustainable energy generation and storage development is the most perdurable challenge in the domain of renewable energy research. Herein, a facile in situ solvothermal approach has been adopted to prepare a methylviologen-regulated crystalline metal phosphonate compound, [C12H14N2][Ni(C11H11N2)(H2hedp)2]2•6H2O (NIT1), (H4hedp = 1-hydroxyethane 1,1-diphosphonic acid) and well characterized by several techniques. The as-prepared NIT1 displays excellent bifunctional electrocatalytic activity with dynamic stability toward oxygen evolution reaction (η10 = 288 mV) and hydrogen evolution reaction (η10 = 228 mV) in alkaline (1.0 M KOH) and acidic mediums (0.5 M H2SO4), respectively. Such a low overpotential and Tafel slope (68 mV/dec for OER; 56 mV/dec for HER) along with long-term durability up to 20 h of NIT1 make it superior to benchmark the electrocatalyst and various nonprecious metal-based catalysts under similar experimental condition. Further, the electrochemical supercapacitor measurements (in three-electrode system) reveal that the NIT1 electrode possesses much higher specific capacity of 187.6 C g-1 at a current density of 2 A g-1 (272 C g-1 at 5 mV s-1) with capacitance retention of 75.2% over 10,000 cycles at 14 A g-1 (Coulombic efficiency > 99%) in 6 M KOH electrolyte medium. Finally for a practical application, an asymmetric supercapacitor device (coin cell) is assembled by NIT1 material. The as-fabricated device delivers the maximum energy density of 39.4 Wh kg-1 at a power density of 450 W kg-1 and achieves a wide voltage window of 1.80 V. Notably, the device endures a remarkable cycle performance with cyclic retention of 92% (Coulombic efficiency > 99%) even after 14,000 charge/discharge cycles at 10 A g-1. Nevertheless, the extraordinary electrochemical activities toward OER and HER as well as the high-performance device fabrication for LED illumination of such a noble metal-free lower-dimensional charge-transfer compound are truly path breaking and would be promising for the development of advanced multifunctional materials.

A Review of Transition Metal Boride, Carbide, Pnictide, and Chalcogenide Water Oxidation Electrocatalysts

Transition metal borides, carbides, pnictides, and chalcogenides (X-ides) have emerged as a class of materials for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Because of their high earth abundance, electrical conductivity, and OER performance, these electrocatalysts have the potential to enable the practical application of green energy conversion and storage. Under OER potentials, X-ide electrocatalysts demonstrate various degrees of oxidation resistance due to their differences in chemical composition, crystal structure, and morphology. Depending on their resistance to oxidation, these catalysts will fall into one of three post-OER electrocatalyst categories: fully oxidized oxide/(oxy)hydroxide material, partially oxidized core@shell structure, and unoxidized material. In the past ten years (from 2013 to 2022), over 890 peer-reviewed research papers have focused on X-ide OER electrocatalysts. Previous review papers have provided limited conclusions and have omitted the significance of "catalytically active sites/species/phases" in X-ide OER electrocatalysts. In this review, a comprehensive summary of (i) experimental parameters (e.g., substrates, electrocatalyst loading amounts, geometric overpotentials, Tafel slopes, etc.) and (ii) electrochemical stability tests and post-analyses in X-ide OER electrocatalyst publications from 2013 to 2022 is provided. Both mono and polyanion X-ides are discussed and classified with respect to their material transformation during the OER. Special analytical techniques employed to study X-ide reconstruction are also evaluated. Additionally, future challenges and questions yet to be answered are provided in each section. This review aims to provide researchers with a toolkit to approach X-ide OER electrocatalyst research and to showcase necessary avenues for future investigation.

Sulfur Vacancies-Engineered Ni3 S4-x Hollow Microspheres with Optimized Anionic Adsorption Energy for High-Performance Supercapacitor

Nickel sulfides with high theoretical capacitance have aroused tremendous attention for next-generation supercapacitors. Unfortunately, the structural durability of nickel sulfides is insufficient to support the long-term working situation. Herein, Ni₃ S_4-x hollow microspheres with sulfur vacancies (Ni₃ S_4-x HMs) are constructed by a liquid-phase anion exchange process using the Ni-MOF as the precursor. Both experimental investigation and theoretical analysis suggest that the deliberately introduced sulfur vacancies effectively improve the anionic adsorptive ability of nickel sulfides in the KOH electrolyte, significantly enhancing the reversible capacitance and structural durability (1884 F g^-1 at 2 A g^-1 , capacity retention of 97.9% after 10 000 cycles). In addition, an asymmetrical solid-state supercapacitor consisting of Ni₃ S_4-x HMs cathode and activated carbon anode shows infusive energy/power density (33.05 Wh kg^-1 /1.68 kW kg^-1 ) and remains 82.4% over 10 000 repeated charging/discharging processes in the KOH-PVA gel electrolyte. The strategies can be developed to enlighten the structural design of various metal sulfides materials adopted in electrochemical energy storage devices including alkali ion batteries, supercapacitors, and electrocatalysts.

Electronic modulation and proton transfer by iron and borate co-doping for synergistically triggering the oxygen evolution reaction on a hollow NiO bipyramidal prism

Designing an Earth-abundant and inexpensive electrocatalyst to drive the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) for high-purity hydrogen production is of great importance. Herein, the cation (iron) and anion (borate) co-doping strategy was proposed to effectively trigger the OER performance on a low-cost NiO material. The optimal hollow Fe/B_i-NiO bipyramidal prism shows superior OER performance, and displays a low overpotential (261 mV) at 10 mA cm^-2, accompanied by a low Tafel slope (46 mV dec^-1), excellent intrinsic activity and robust stability. The overall alkaline water splitting using Fe/B_i-NiO/NF as an anode affords low cell voltages of 1.50 and 1.63 V at 10 and 100 mA cm^-2, and operates steadily at a high current density of 100 mA cm^-2 for 55 h without decay. The excellent electrocatalytic activity could be ascribed to the hollow structure to shorten the mass transfer pathway, the electronic modulation by Fe doping, the increased accessible electroactive sites created by oxygen vacancies through borate doping, and the formation of BO₃^3--OH^- to accelerate the deprotonation of OH_ads.

Emergence of Ni-Based Chalcogenides (S and Se) for Clean Energy Conversion and Storage

Nickel chalcogenide (S and Se) based nanostructures intrigued scientists for some time as materials for energy conversion and storage systems. Interest in these materials is due to their good electrochemical stability, eco-friendly nature, and low cost. The present review compiles recent progress in the area of nickel-(S and Se)-based materials by providing a comprehensive summary of their structural and chemical features and performance. Improving properties of the materials, such as electrical conductivity and surface characteristics (surface area and morphology), through strategies like nano-structuring and hybridization, are systematically discussed. The interaction of the materials with electrolytes, other electro-active materials, and inactive components are analyzed to understand their effects on the performance of energy conversion and storage devices. Finally, outstanding challenges and possible solutions are briefly presented with some perspectives toward the future development of these materials for energy-oriented devices with high performance.

Self-driven Ru-modified NiFe MOF nanosheet as multifunctional electrocatalyst for boosting water and urea electrolysis

Urea electro-oxidation reaction (UOR) has been a promising strategy to replace oxygen evolution reaction (OER) by urea-mediated water splitting for hydrogen production. Naturally, rational design of high-efficiency and multifunctional electrocatalyst towards UOR and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is of vital significance, but still a grand challenge. Herein, an innovative 3D Ru-modified NiFe metal-organic framework (MOF) nanoflake array on Ni foam (Ru-NiFe-x/NF) was elaborately designed via spontaneous galvanic replacement reaction (GRR). Notably, the adsorption capability of intermediate species (H*) of catalyst is significantly optimized by Ru modification. Meanwhile, rich high-valence Ni active species can be acquired by self-driven electronic reconstruction in the interface, then dramatically accelerating the electrolysis of water and urea. Remarkably, the optimized Ru-NiFe-③/NF (1.6 at% of Ru) only requires the overpotential of 90 and 310 mV to attain 100 mA cm^-2 toward HER and OER in alkaline electrolyte, respectively. Impressively, an ultralow voltage of 1.47 V is required for Ru-NiFe-③/NF to deliver a current density of 100 mA cm^-2 in urea-assisted electrolysis cell with superior stability, which is 190 mV lower than that of Pt/C-NF||RuO₂/NF couple. This work is desired to explore a facile way to exploit environmentally-friendly energy by coupling hydrogen evolution with urea-rich sewage disposal.

Spinel-type oxygen-incorporated Ni3+ self-doped Ni3S4 ultrathin nanosheets for highly efficient and stable oxygen evolution electrocatalysis

Spinel-type structured materials have attracted considerable attention and been regarded as promising alternative catalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, the regulation of catalytically active octahedral sites in spinel structure to realize high activity and good stability for OER electrocatalysis is still a great challenge. Herein, we propose a self-doping strategy to boost OER performance of spinel-type Ni₃S₄ enriched high valence Ni³⁺ as active sites. By sacrificing Ni-based metal-organic framework, the ultrathin Ni₃S₄ manosheets are topologically grown on conductive Ni foam substrate and realize the simultaneous Ni³⁺ self-doping and surface oxygen incorporation during in situ sulfidation conversion process. These compositional and structural characteristics endow it with enhanced adsorption binding strength, enabling the highly efficient OER. As a result, the Ni₃S₄/NF exhibits excellent activity and outstanding stability toward OER electrocatalysis in alkaline medium, which only demands an ultralow overpotential of 266 mV to deliver a current density of 10 mA cm^-2 and manifests the stable OER process for at least 75 h. Moreover, when used as an effective overall water splitting electrolyzer, the Ni₃S₄/NF achieves a current density of 10 mA cm^-2 at only 1.638 V with good long-term stability.

Highly enhanced bifunctional electrocatalytic activity of mixed copper–copper oxides on nickel foam via composition control

Fabricating Cu₂O–CuO and CuO directly on the conducting nickel foam resulted in highly enhanced OER and HER electrocatalytic activity in an alkaline medium, respectively.
