An in-situ method for SERS substrate preparation and optimization based on galvanic replacement reaction

BACKGROUND

Various surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrate preparation methods have been reported, however, how to tune the "gap" between nanostructures to make more "hot spots" is still a barrier that restricts their application. The gap between nanostructures is usually fixed when the substrates are prepared. In other words, it is hard to tune interparticle distances for maximum electromagnetic coupling during substrate preparation process. Therefore, an in-situ substrate optimization method that could monitor the SERS signal intensity changes, i.e., to find the optimum gap width and particle size, during substrate preparation process is needed.

RESULTS

A method based on the galvanic replacement reaction (GRR) is proposed for the in-situ gap width tuning between nanostructures as well as for the optimization of SERS substrates. Noble metal nanoparticles (NPs) form and grow on the sacrificial templates' surface while noble metal ions are reduced by sacrificial metal (oxides) in GRR. Along with the fresh and clean NPs' surface generated, the gap between two noble metal NPs decreases with the growth of the NPs. To demonstrate this strategy, cuprous oxide/Ti (Cu2O/Ti) sacrificial templates were prepared, and then a GRR was carried out with HAuCl4. The real-time SERS detection during GRR show that the optimum reaction time (ORT) is 300 ± 30 s. Furthermore, SERS performance testing was conducted on the optimized substrate, revealing that the detection limit for crystal violet can reach 1.96 × 10-11 M, confirming the feasibility of this method.

SIGNIFICANCE AND NOVELTY

By monitoring the in-situ SERS signal of probes during GRR will obtain an "optimal state" of the SERS substrate with optimal gap width and particle size. The SERS substrate preparation and optimization strategy proposed in this article not only provides a simple, efficient, and low-cost method to fabricate surface-clean noble NPs but also paves the way for the in-situ optimization of NPs size and gap width between NPs which could achieve wider applications of SERS.

Interfacial galvanic replacement strategy for Pd-doped NiFe MOF nanosheets with highly efficient dopamine detection

An interfacial galvanic replacement strategy to controllable synthesize palladium nanoparticles (Pd NPs)-modified NiFe MOF nanocomposite on nickel foam, which served as an efficient sensing platform for quantitative determination of dopamine (DA). Pd NPs grown in situ on the nanosheets of NiFe MOF via self-driven galvanic replacement reaction (GRR) and well uniform distribution was achieved. This method effectively reduced the aggregation of metallic nanoparticles and significantly promoted the electron transfer rate during the electrochemical process, leading to improved electrocatalytic activity for DA oxidation. Remarkably, the precisely constructed biosensor achieved a low detection limit (LOD) of 0.068 µM and recovery of 94.1% (RSD 6.7%, N = 3) for simulated real sample detection and also exhibited superior selectivity and stability. The results confirmed that the as-fabricated Pd-NiFe/NF composite electrode could realize the quantitative determination of DA and showed promising prospects in real sample biosensing.

Ultrasound-assisted preparation of PdCo bimetallic nanoparticles loaded on beta zeolite for efficient catalytic hydrogen production from dodecahydro-N-ethylcarbazole

Research and development of high-performance catalysts is a key technology to realize hydrogen energy storage and transportation based on liquid organic hydrogen carriers. Co/beta was prepared using beta zeolite as a carrier via an electrostatic adsorption (ESA)-chemical reduction method, and it was used as the template and reducing agent to prepare bimetallic catalysts via an ultrasonic assisted galvanic replacement process (UGR). The fabricated PdCo/beta were characterized by TEM, XPS, FT-IR, XRD, H2-TPR, and H2-TPD. It was shown that the ultrafine PdCo nanoparticles (NPs) are evenly distributed on the surface of the beta zeolite. There is electron transfer between metal NPs and strong-metal-support-interaction (SMSI), which results in highly efficient catalytic dodecahydro-N-ethylcarbazole (12H-NEC) dehydrogenation performance of PdCo bimetallic catalysts. The dehydrogenation efficiency reached 100 % in 4 h at 180 °C and 95.3 % in 6 h at 160 °C. The TOF of 146.22 min-1 is 7 times that of Pd/beta. The apparent activation energy of the reaction is 66.6 kJ/mol, which is much lower than that of Pd/beta. Under the action of ultrasonic waves, the galvanic replacement reaction is accelerated, and the intermetal and metal-carrier interactions are enhanced, which improves the catalytic reaction performance.

PVP-capped silver nanoparticles for efficient SERS detection of adenine based on the stabilizing and enrichment roles of PVP

A polyvinylpyrrolidone-capped (PVP-capped) strategy is reported to synthesize Ag NPs on silicon wafers via galvanic replacement reaction for SERS detection of adenine, where PVP acts as stabilizing agent in synthesis and efficient enrichment in detection. The morphologies of Ag NPs are optimized with uniform particle size by adjusting synthesis conditions, which hold excellent SERS performances like a high enhancement factor of 1.42 × 106, good uniform, reproducibility, and transferable nature. With the protection of the capped PVP, the Ag NPs keep excellent SERS properties even against harsh conditions of high temperature (100 ℃) and strong acid and base for 24 h. Utilizing the structural feature of PVP with abundant carbonyl groups, the PVP-capped Ag NPs achieve efficient enrichment of adenine through hydrogen bonding and π-interactions, which is analyzed by density functional theory. Quantitative detection of adenine is performed with a wide linear range from 10-4 to 10-8 M and a low limit of detection of 1 nM. Detection of adenine in human urine samples is achieved with a recovery of 99.1-103.4% and an RSD of less than 5%.

Facile Synthesis of Multifunctional Ni(OH)2 -Supported Core-Shell Ni@Pd Nanocomposites for the Electro-Oxidation of Small Organic Molecules

In the domain of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), the development of efficient and durable catalysts for the electro-oxidation of small organic molecules, especially of alcohols (methanol, ethanol, ethylene glycol, et al.) has always been a hot topic. A large number of related electrocatalysts with splendid performance have been designed and synthesized till now, while the preparation processes of most of them are demanding on experimental operations and conditions. Herein, we put forward a facile and handy method for the preparation of multifunctional Ni(OH)2 -supported core-shell Ni@Pd nanocomposites (Ni(OH)2 /Ni@Pd NCs) with the assistance of galvanic replacement reaction (GRR) at room temperature and ambient pressure. As expected, the Ni(OH)2 substrate can prevent the aggregation of core-shell (CS) Ni@Pd nanoparticles (NPs) and inhibit the formation of COads and further prevent Pd from being poisoned. The synergistic effect between CS Ni@Pd NPs and Ni(OH)2 substrate and the electronic effect between Pd shell and Ni core contribute to the outstanding electrocatalytic performance for methanol, ethanol, and ethylene glycol oxidation in alkaline condition. This study provides a succinct method for the design and preparation of efficient Pd-based electrocatalysts for alcohol electro-oxidation.

Self-driven Ru-modified NiFe MOF nanosheet as multifunctional electrocatalyst for boosting water and urea electrolysis

Urea electro-oxidation reaction (UOR) has been a promising strategy to replace oxygen evolution reaction (OER) by urea-mediated water splitting for hydrogen production. Naturally, rational design of high-efficiency and multifunctional electrocatalyst towards UOR and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is of vital significance, but still a grand challenge. Herein, an innovative 3D Ru-modified NiFe metal-organic framework (MOF) nanoflake array on Ni foam (Ru-NiFe-x/NF) was elaborately designed via spontaneous galvanic replacement reaction (GRR). Notably, the adsorption capability of intermediate species (H*) of catalyst is significantly optimized by Ru modification. Meanwhile, rich high-valence Ni active species can be acquired by self-driven electronic reconstruction in the interface, then dramatically accelerating the electrolysis of water and urea. Remarkably, the optimized Ru-NiFe-③/NF (1.6 at% of Ru) only requires the overpotential of 90 and 310 mV to attain 100 mA cm^-2 toward HER and OER in alkaline electrolyte, respectively. Impressively, an ultralow voltage of 1.47 V is required for Ru-NiFe-③/NF to deliver a current density of 100 mA cm^-2 in urea-assisted electrolysis cell with superior stability, which is 190 mV lower than that of Pt/C-NF||RuO₂/NF couple. This work is desired to explore a facile way to exploit environmentally-friendly energy by coupling hydrogen evolution with urea-rich sewage disposal.

The studies on wet chemical etching via in situ liquid cell TEM

Wet chemical etching is a widely used process to fabricate fascinating nanomaterials, such as nanoparticles with precisely controlled size and shape. Understanding the etching mechanism and kinetic evolution process is crucial for controlling wet chemical etching. The development of in situ liquid cell transmission electron microscopy (LCTEM) enables the study on wet chemical etching with high temporal and spatial resolutions. However, there still lack a detailed literature review on the wet chemical etching studies by in situ LCTEM. In this review, we summarize the studies on wet etching nanoparticles, one-dimensional nanomaterials and nanoribbons by in situ LCTEM, including etching rate, anisotropic etching, morphology evolution process, and etching mechanism. The challenges and opportunities of in situ LCTEM are also discussed.

Galvanic replacement reaction for in situ fabrication of litchi-shaped heterogeneous liquid metal-Au nano-composite for radio-photothermal cancer therapy

With tremendous research advances in biomedical application, liquid metals (LM) also offer fantastic chemistry for synthesis of novel nano-composites. Herein, as a pioneering trial, litchi-shaped heterogeneous eutectic gallium indium-Au nanoparticles (EGaIn-Au NPs), served as effective radiosensitizer and photothermal agent for radio-photothermal cancer therapy, have been successfully prepared using in situ interfacial galvanic replacement reaction. The enhanced photothermal conversion efficiency and boosted radio-sensitization effect could be achieved with the reduction of Au nanodots onto the eutectic gallium indium (EGaIn) NPs surface. Most importantly, the growth of tumor could be effectively inhibited under the combined radio-photothermal therapy mediated by EGaIn-Au NPs. Inspired by this approach, in situ interfacial galvanic replacement reaction may open a novel strategy to fabricate LM-based nano-composite with advanced multi-functionalities.

An environmentally friendly one-pot synthesis method by the ultrasound assistance for the decoration of ultrasmall Pd-Ag NPs on graphene as high active anode catalyst towards ethanol oxidation

An environmentally friendly one-pot synthesis approach for the decoration of Pd-Ag nanoparticles with the ultrasmall size on graphene (Pd-Ag/G) by the assistance of ultrasound is proposed in this paper. This method offers exceptional advantages over other approaches such as environmentally friendly synthesis, being low temperature, reductant, surfactant free, simple, fast and one-pot synthesis. In this work, silver formate is added to the graphene suspension at 25 °C. Then, PdCl₂ is added to the suspension under stirring to fabricate Pd-Ag/G. The uniform dispersity of nanoparticles with an average size of about 2-3 nm is well confirmed by transmission electron microscopy micrographs. The resultant catalyst is applied as anode electrocatalyst towards electrooxidation reaction of ethanol. The Pd-Ag/G catalyst displays exceptional catalytic activity and durability towards electro-oxidation of ethanol. According to the obtained results, it be concluded that the combination of Ag and Pd, ultrasmall and uniform distribution of Pd-Ag nanoparticles led to the improvement of electrocatalytic activity of the Pd-Ag/G catalyst.

Chirality Transfer in Galvanic Replacement Reactions

Demand for the transfer of chirality from a pre-engineered nanoparticle to any other metal is of fundamental importance for developing a wide range of chirality-related applications. Herein, we show that binary alloy chiral nanoparticles (CNPs) with an engineerable composition can be formed from metallic CNPs with intrinsic structural chirality serving as sacrificial templates (STs), via a galvanic replacement reaction (GRR). This GRR-mediated chirality transfer is a general phenomenon and results in the formation of Cu-Ag CNPs with solid morphology and mesoporous CNPs made of Ag-Au, Ag-Pt, and Ag-Pd. Our study imposes a new component, i.e., structural chirality, on the GRR. The insights from our study improve our fundamental understanding of the GRR principle and devise a versatile method to generate mesoporous alloy CNPs for developing prominent chirality-related applications in asymmetric catalysis, enantiodifferentiation, enantioseparation, biodetection, and bioimaging.

Sonochemical synthesis of high-performance Pd@CuNWs/MWCNTs-CH electrocatalyst by galvanic replacement toward ethanol oxidation in alkaline media

In this paper, a fast and effective method for the palladium (Pd) wire nanostructures synthesis with the great surface area through galvanic replacement reaction utilizing copper nanowires (CuNWS) as a template by the assistance of ultrasound under room temperature condition is proposed. A multifunctional catalyst with the mentioned nanostructure, Pd@CuNWs, and multi walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and chitosan (CH) as a binder was fabricated. To investigate the morphology and bulk composition of the prepared catalyst, Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FE-SEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray Powder Diffraction (XRD), and Inductively Coupled Plasma atomic Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-AES) were utilized. Various electrochemical techniques including chronoamperometry and cyclic voltammetry were employed for the electrocatalytic activity of ethanol electrooxidation and durability in basic solution. Electrochemical catalytic activity and durability evaluation results proved that the as-synthesized Pd@CuNWs/MWCNTs-CH has a super electrocatalytic activity compared to Pd/MWCNTs and Pd/C electrocatalysts for ethanol electrooxidation. Pd@CuNWs/MWCNTs-CH catalyst demonstrated substantially enhanced performance and long-term stability for ethanol electrooxidation in the basic solution in comparison to Pd/MWCNTs and commercial Pd/C demonstrated the potential in utilizing Pd@CuNWs/MWCNTs-CH as an efficient catalyst for ethanol oxidation. Additionally, thermodynamic and kinetic evaluations revealed that the Pd@CuNWs/MWCNTs-CH catalyst has lower activation energy compared to Pd/MWCNTs and Pd/C which leads to a lower energy barrier and an excellent charge transfer rate towards ethanol oxidation. Noticeably, the Pd@CuNWs/MWCNTs-CH presented excellent catalytic activities with high peak current density which was 9.5 times more than Pd/C, and more negative onset potential in comparison to Pd/C is acquired for ethanol electrooxidation denoting synergistic effect between CuNWs/MWCNs-CH and Pd. The Pd@CuNWs/MWCNTs-CH can be considered as a valid candidate among available electrocatalysts in direct ethanol fuel cells (DEFCs).

Catalytic Application and Mechanism Studies of Argentic Chloride Coupled Ag/Au Hollow Heterostructures: Considering the Interface Between Ag/Au Bimetals

For an economical use of solar energy, photocatalysts that are sufficiently efficient, stable, and capable of harvesting light are required. Composite heterostructures composed of noble metals and semiconductors exhibited the excellent in catalytic application. Here, 1D Ag/Au/AgCl hollow heterostructures are synthesized by galvanic replacement reaction (GRR) from Ag nanowires (NWs). The catalytic properties of these as-obtained Ag/Au/AgCl hollow heterostructures with different ratios are investigated by reducing 4-nitrophenol (Nip) into 4-aminophenol (Amp) in the presence of NaBH₄, and the influence of AgCl semiconductor to the catalytic performances of Ag/Au bimetals is also investigated. These hollow heterostructures show the higher catalytic properties than pure Ag NWs, and the AgCl not only act as supporting materials, but the excess AgCl is also the obstacle for contact of Ag/Au bimetals with reactive species. Moreover, the photocatalytic performances of these hollow heterostructures are carried out by degradation of acid orange 7 (AO7) under UV and visible light. These Ag/Au/AgCl hollow heterostructures present the higher photocatalytic activities than pure Ag NWs and commercial TiO₂ (P25), and the Ag/Au bimetals enhance the photocatalytic activity of AgCl semiconductor via the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) and plasmon resonance energy transfer (PRET) mechanisms. The as-synthesized 1D Ag/Au/AgCl hollow heterostructures with multifunction could apply in practical environmental remedy by catalytic manners.

A facile approach to prepare silicon-based Pt-Ag tubular dendritic nano-forests (tDNFs) for solar-light-enhanced methanol oxidation reaction

In this paper, a facile two-step Galvanic replacement reaction (GRR) is proposed to prepare Pt-Ag tubular dendritic nano-forests (tDNFs) in ambient condition for enhancing methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) under solar illumination. In the first GRR, a homogeneous layer of silver dendritic nano-forests (DNFs) with 10 μm in thickness was grown on Si wafer in 5 min in silver nitride (AgNO3) and buffer oxide etchant (BOE) solution. In the second GRR, we utilized chloroplatinic acid (H2PtCl6) as the precursor for platinum (Pt) deposition to further transform the prepared Ag DNFs into Pt-Ag tDNFs. The catalytic performance and solar response of the Pt-Ag tDNFs toward methanol electro-oxidation are also studied by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and chronoamperometry (CA). The methanol oxidation current was boosted by 6.4% under solar illumination on the Pt-Ag tDNFs due to the induced localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) on the dendritic structure. Current results provide a cost-effective and facile approach to prepare solar-driven metallic electrodes potentially applicable to photo-electro-chemical fuel cells.
