A Diethyleneglycol‐Pyrene‐Modified Ru(II) Catalyst for the Design of Buckypaper Bioelectrodes and the Wiring of Glucose Dehydrogenases

A Pyrene-Triazacyclononane Anchor Affords High Operational Stability for CO2 RR by a CNT-Supported Histidine-Tagged CODH

An original 1‐acetato‐4‐(1‐pyrenyl)‐1,4,7‐triazacyclononane (AcPyTACN) was synthesized for the immobilization of a His‐tagged recombinant CODH from Rhodospirillum rubrum (RrCODH) on carbon‐nanotube electrodes. The strong binding of the enzyme at the Ni‐AcPyTACN complex affords a high current density of 4.9 mA cm⁻² towards electroenzymatic CO₂ reduction and a high stability of more than 6×10⁶ TON when integrated on a gas‐diffusion bioelectrode.

Metal Nanoparticles and Carbon-Based Nanomaterials for Improved Performances of Electrochemical (Bio)Sensors with Biomedical Applications

Monitoring human health for early detection of disease conditions or health disorders is of major clinical importance for maintaining a healthy life. Sensors are small devices employed for qualitative and quantitative determination of various analytes by monitoring their properties using a certain transduction method. A "real-time" biosensor includes a biological recognition receptor (such as an antibody, enzyme, nucleic acid or whole cell) and a transducer to convert the biological binding event to a detectable signal, which is read out indicating both the presence and concentration of the analyte molecule. A wide range of specific analytes with biomedical significance at ultralow concentration can be sensitively detected. In nano(bio)sensors, nanoparticles (NPs) are incorporated into the (bio)sensor design by attachment to the suitably modified platforms. For this purpose, metal nanoparticles have many advantageous properties making them useful in the transducer component of the (bio)sensors. Gold, silver and platinum NPs have been the most popular ones, each form of these metallic NPs exhibiting special surface and interface features, which significantly improve the biocompatibility and transduction of the (bio)sensor compared to the same process in the absence of these NPs. This comprehensive review is focused on the main types of NPs used for electrochemical (bio)sensors design, especially screen-printed electrodes, with their specific medical application due to their improved analytical performances and miniaturized form. Other advantages such as supporting real-time decision and rapid manipulation are pointed out. A special attention is paid to carbon-based nanomaterials (especially carbon nanotubes and graphene), used by themselves or decorated with metal nanoparticles, with excellent features such as high surface area, excellent conductivity, effective catalytic properties and biocompatibility, which confer to these hybrid nanocomposites a wide biomedical applicability.

Mini-Review: Recent Technologies of Electrode and System in the Enzymatic Biofuel Cell (EBFC)

Enzymatic biofuel cells (EBFCs) is one of the branches of fuel cells that can provide high potential for various applications. However, EBFC has challenges in improving the performance power output. Exploring electrode materials is one way to increase enzyme utilization and lead to a high conversion rate so that efficient enzyme loading on the electrode surface can function correctly. This paper briefly presents recent technologies developed to improve bio-catalytic properties, biocompatibility, biodegradability, implantability, and mechanical flexibility in EBFCs. Among the combinations of materials that can be studied and are interesting because of their properties, there are various nanoparticles, carbon-based materials, and conductive polymers; all three have the advantages of chemical stability and enhanced electron transfer. The methods to immobilize enzymes, and support and substrate issues are also covered in this paper. In addition, the EBFC system is also explored and developed as suitable for applications such as self-pumping and microfluidic EBFC.

Mechanical, Electrical, and Thermal Properties of Carbon Nanotube Buckypapers/Epoxy Nanocomposites Produced by Oxidized and Epoxidized Nanotubes

High volume fraction carbon nanotube (CNT) composites (7.5-16% vol.) were fabricated by the impregnation of CNT buckypapers into epoxy resin. To enhance the interfacial reaction with the epoxy resin, the CNTs were modified by two different treatments, namely, an epoxidation treatment and a chemical oxidation. The chemical treatment was found to result in CNT length severance and to affect the porosity of the buckypapers, having an important impact on the physico-mechanical properties of the nanocomposites. Overall, the mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties of the impregnated buckypapers were found to be superior of the neat epoxy resin, offering an attractive combination of mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties for multifunctional composites.

Photoelectrochemically-assisted biofuel cell constructed by redox complex and g-C3N4 coated MWCNT bioanode

Herein, we report a membraneless glucose and air photoelectrochemical biofuel cell (PBFC) with a visible light assisted photobioanode. Flavin adenine dinucleotide dependent glucose dehydrogenase (FADGDH) was immobilized on the combined photobioanode for the visible light assisted glucose oxidation (GCE|MWCNT|g-C₃N₄|Ru-complex|FADGDH) with a quinone mediated electron transfer. Bilirubine oxidase (BOx) immobilized on MWCNT coated GCE (GCE|BOx) was used as the cathode with direct electron transfer (DET). An improvement of biocatalytic oxidation current was observed by 6.2% due in part to the light-driven electron-transfer. The large oxidation currents are probably owing to the good contacting of the immobilized enzymes with the electrode material and the utilization of light assisted process. Under the visible light, the photobioanode shows an anodic photocurrent of 1.95 μA cm² at attractively low potentials viz. -0.4 vs Ag/AgCl. The lower-lying conduction band of g-C₃N₄ as compared to Ru-complexes decreases the rate of hole and electron recombination and enhances the charge transportation. The bioanode shows maximum current density for glucose oxidation up to 6.78 μA cm^-2 at 0.2 V vs Ag/AgCl at pH:7. The performance of three promising Ru-complexes differing in chemical and redox properties were compared as electron mediators for FADGDH. Upon illumination, the PBFC delivered a maximum power density of 28.5 ± 0.10 μW cm^-2 at a cell voltage of +0.4 V with an open circuit voltage of 0.64 V.
