Abstract
Despite the accessibility of numerous transition metal polyphosphido complexes through transition-metal-mediated activation of white phosphorus, the targeted functionalization of Pn ligands to obtain functional monophosphorus species remains challenging. In this study, we introduce a new [3+1] fragmentation procedure for cyclo-P4 ligands, leading to the discovery of acylcyanophosphanides and -phosphines. Treatment of the complex [K(18c-6)][(Ar*BIAN)Co(η4 -P4 )] ([K(18c-6)]3, 18c-6=[18]crown-6, Ar*=2,6-dibenzhydryl-4-isopropylphenyl, BIAN=1,2-bis(arylimino)acenaphthene diimine) with acyl chlorides results in the formation of acylated tetraphosphido complexes [(Ar*BIAN)Co(η4 -P4 C(O)R)] (R=tBu, Cy, 1-Ad, Ph; 4 a-d). Subsequent reactions of 4 a-d with cyanide salts yield acylated cyanophosphanides [RC(O)PCN]- (9 a-d- ) and the cyclo-P3 cobaltate anion [(Ar*BIAN)Co(η3 -P3 )(CN)]- (8- ). Further reactions of 4 a-d with trimethylsilyl cyanide (Me3 SiCN) and isocyanides provide insight into a plausible mechanism of this [3+1] fragmentation reaction, as these reagents partially displace the P4 C(O)R ligand from the cobalt center. Several potential intermediates of the [3+1] fragmentation were characterized. Additionally, the introduction of a second acyl substituent was achieved by treating [K(18c-6)]9b with CyC(O)Cl, resulting in the first bis(acyl)monocyanophosphine (CyC(O))2 PCN (10).

Abstract
The emissive properties of two Ru(II) complexes, [Ru(dmbipy)2L1][PF6]2 (1) and [Ru2(dmbipy)4L2][PF6]4 (2), (where L1 and L2 are π-extended phenanthroline-based ligands and dmbipy = 4,4'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridine) have been explored for dual applications, namely, deep-red light-emitting electrochemical cells (LECs) and electrochemiluminescence (ECL) sensors for the detection of organophosphorus pesticides (OPs) that include chlorpyrifos (CPS). A simple single-layer deep-red LEC device comprising 2 is reported that outperforms both its mononuclear derivative 1 and all previously reported dinuclear LECs, with a maximum brightness of 524 cd/m2, an external quantum efficiency of 0.62%, and a turn-on voltage of 3.2 V. Optoelectronic studies reveal that the ECL response of 2 is improved when compared to its mononuclear counterpart 1 and benchmark [Ru(bipy)3]2+ (3). Modified glassy carbon electrodes coated with 2 are highly sensitive deep-red ECL sensors that facilitate the detection of CPS directly from river water and fruit samples without any complex pretreatment steps, operating over a broad logarithmic concentration range, with a low detection limit.

Dinuclear Ru II complexes with quinonoid bridges: tuning the electrochemical and spectroscopic properties of redox-switchable NIR dyes through judicious bridge design. Abstract
Bridging quinonoid ligands are important platforms for generating metal-based switchable optoelectronic and magnetic materials. A possible sound way of influencing the properties of the aforementioned materials is to modify the direct metal-ligand interface. We present herein a series of dinuclear RuII complexes where the set of donor atoms at the bridging quinonoid ligands range from [O,O,O,O], [O,O,O,N], [O,N,O,N] and [O,N,O,N']. Additionally, the substituents on the N-donors were varied as well (a total of eight different quinonoid bridges are compared). We also present a mononuclear RuII complex for comparison purposes. The dinuclear complexes act as switchable NIR dyes, absorbing in the NIR region in their mixed-valent RuII/RuIII form but not in the neighboring RuII/RuII and RuIII/RuIII states. The switching potentials (the potentials at which NIR absorptions appear) and the λmax of the NIR band can be fine-tuned by varying the donor atoms as well as the electron-donating ability of the substituents on the nitrogen atoms (tuning E by ca. 0.4 V and λmax by ca. 450 nm). Introducing more electron-rich substituents at the nitrogen atoms of the bridge results in higher band energies and more cathodic redox potentials. Unsymmetrical bridging ligands increase the thermodynamic stability of the mixed-valent state. Whereas almost all of the mixed-valent species presented here belong to the delocalised type III of the Robin-Day classification, the most unsymmetrical complex 2O,N(Mes) shows characteristic signs of a borderline Class-II-III compounds. This comprehensive study thus establishes the lesser used unsymmetrically substituted quinones as excellent bridges for generating and tuning a series of properties in their corresponding metal complexes.

Abstract
A central theme in chemistry is the understanding of the mechanisms that drive chemical transformations. A well-known, highly cited mechanism in organometallic chemistry is the superexchange mechanism in which unpaired electrons on two or more metal centers interact through an electron pair of the bridging ligand. We use a combination of novel synthesis and computation to show that such interactions may in fact occur by a more direct mechanism than superexchange that is based on direct quantum entanglement of the two metal centers. Specifically, we synthesize and experimentally characterize a novel cobalt dimer complex with benzoquinoid bridging ligands and investigate its electronic structure with the variational two-electron reduced density matrix method using large active spaces. The result draws novel connections between inorganic mechanisms and quantum entanglement, thereby opening new possibilities for the design of strongly correlated organometallic compounds whose magnetic and spin properties have applications in superconductors, energy storage, thermoelectrics, and spintronics.

Abstract
Near room temperature hysteretic thermo-induced valence tautomerism was discovered in a layered 2D-coordination polymer of manganese(ii) with nitronyl nitroxide radicals separated by ClO4- anions (1). This opens a novel approach towards switchable materials with hysteresis and under ambient conditions with prospects for applications and for investigating solid-state intramolecular electron transfers. Herein, two new compounds with similar layered structures where the anions (X) are BF4- (2) or PF6- (3) are presented. Their magnetic behaviors also reveal hysteretic thermo-induced valence tautomeric conversions but in two steps and evidencing a strong effect of the anion. This occurs near room temperature (278-220 K) for 2 and higher for 3 (380-330 K). Their single crystal structures at different temperatures show that this involves two successive thermally-triggered electron transfers with switching between three redox tautomers formulated as {[MnII2-yMnIIIy(NITIm)3-y(NITRed)y]X}n, where y is temperature dependent. Upon cooling from the high-temperature redox-tautomer (y = 0) to the intermediate one (y = 1), half of the manganese(ii) centers are oxidized to manganese(iii) and 1/3 of the nitronyl nitroxide radicals (NITIm-) are reduced to the aminoxyl form (NITRed2-). On further cooling, the second half of the manganese(ii) centers are oxidized and another 1/3 of the radicals are reduced to reach the low-temperature redox-tautomer (y = 2). Upon reheating, reverse electron transfers occur. This is complementarily supported by X-ray powder measurements, differential scanning calorimetry, and electron paramagnetic resonance and Raman spectroscopies. These multi-stable compounds in which manganese ions exchange reversibly their electron with the nitronyl nitroxide radical are outstanding rare examples of two-step valence tautomerism in the solid state promoted by the polymeric structure.

Abstract
The electrochemical characteristics of 2-mono(2,6-diisopropylphenylimino)acenaphthene-1-one (dpp-mian) have been investigated. One-electron reduction of dpp-mian involves the iminoketone fragment, which is revealed by the EPR spectrum obtained after the electrolysis of the dpp-mian solution in tetrahydrofuran (THF). The reduction of dpp-mian with one equivalent of metallic potassium leads to a similar EPR spectrum. The sodium complex [(dpp-mian)Na(dme)]2 (1) produces an EPR signal with hyperfine coupling on the nitrogen atom of the iminoketone fragment of the dpp-mian ligand. Dpp-mian can also be reduced in a one-electron process by SnCl2 ×(dioxane). In this case, complex (dpp-mian)2 SnCl2 (2) is formed, with the tin atom displaying an oxidation state of +4. Tin(II) chloride dihydrate, SnCl2 ×2(H2 O), also reduces dpp-mian, but the two ligands bound to tin in the product form a new carbon-carbon bond between the ketone moieties of the dpp-mian monoanions to form complex (bis-dpp-mian)HSnCl3 (3). Metallic tin reduces dpp-mian to form the (bis-dpp-mian)2 Sn (4) species. Compounds 1-4 were characterized by X-ray diffraction.

Abstract
A series of lanthanide chloranilate frameworks containing a (4,4)-net with LaIII, CeIII, NdIII, SmIII, and EuIII have been synthesised and structurally characterised. Two structure types of square grids were obtained for these frameworks. Type 1 consists of the formula (Et4N)[Ln(can)2(H2O)] (Ln=LaIII, CeIII, NdIII; H2can=chloranilic acid) and crystallised in the tetragonal space group I4/m, featuring a nine-coordinate lanthanide ion with a coordinated water molecule and four chloranilate ligands. Type 2, (Et4N)[Ln(can)2] (SmIII and EuIII) crystallised in the I4/mcm space group, and contains an eight-coordinate lanthanide ion without a coordinated water molecule. A single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformation was carried out for (Et4N)[Nd(can)2(H2O)] on removal of the coordinated aqua ligand.

Abstract
[Ar'SnCo]2 (1, Ar' = C6H3-2,6{C6H3-2,6- iPr2}2), a rare metal-metal bonded cobalt-tin cluster with low-coordinate tin atoms, was prepared by the reaction of [K(thf)0.2][Co(1,5-cod)2] (cod = 1,5-cyclooctadiene) with [Ar'Sn(μ-Cl)]2. This reaction illustrates a promising synthetic strategy to access uncommon metal clusters. The structure of 1 features a rhomboidal Co2Sn2 core with strong metal-metal bonds between tin and cobalt and a weaker tin-tin interaction. Reaction of 1 with white phosphorus afforded [Ar'2Sn2Co2P4] (2), the first molecular cluster compound containing phosphorus, cobalt and tin.

Abstract
We report the synthesis of a semiquinoid-bridged single-chain magnet, as generated through a thermally induced metal-ligand electron transfer. Reaction of FeCl3 with 2,5-dichloro-3,6-dihydroxy-1,4-benzoquinone (LH2) in the presence of (NMe4)Cl gave the compound (NMe4)2[LFeCl2]. Together, variable-temperature X-ray diffraction, Mössbauer spectra, Raman spectra, and dc magnetic susceptibility reveal a transition from a chain containing (L2-)FeII units to one with (L3-•)FeIII upon decreasing temperature, with a transition temperature of T1/2 = 213 K. The dc magnetic susceptibility measurements show strong metal-radical coupling within the chain, with a coupling constant of J = -81 cm-1, and ac susceptibility data reveal slow magnetic relaxation, with a relaxation barrier of Δτ = 55(1) cm-1. To our knowledge, this compound provides the first example of a semiquinoid-bridged single-chain magnet.

Abstract
Reactions of indigo with a variety of substituted anilines produce the corresponding indigo diimines ("Nindigos") in good yields. Nindigo coordination complexes are subsequently prepared by reactions of the Nindigo ligands with Pd(hfac)(2). In most cases, binuclear complexes are obtained in which the deprotonated Nindigo bridges two Pd(hfac) moieties in the expected bis-bidentate binding mode. When the Nindigo possesses bulky substituents on the imine (mesityl, 2,6-dimethylphenyl, 2,6-diisopropylphenyl, etc.), mononuclear Pf(hfac) complexes are obtained in which the Nindigo core has isomerized from a trans- to a cis-alkene; in these structures, the palladium is bound to the cis-Nindigo ligand at the two indole nitrogen atoms; the remaining proton is bound between the imine nitrogen atoms. The palladium complexes possess intense electronic absorption bands [near 920 nm for the binuclear complexes and 820 nm for the mononuclear cis-Nindigo complexes; extinction coefficients are (1.0-2.0) × 10(4) M(-1) cm(-1)] that are ligand-centered (π-π*) transitions. Cyclic voltammetry investigations reveal multiple redox events that are also ligand-centered in origin. All of the palladium complexes can be reversibly oxidized in two sequential one-electron steps; the binuclear complexes are reduced in a two-electron process whose reversibility depends on the Nindigo ligand substituent; the mononuclear palladium species show two one-electron reductions, only the first of which is quasi-reversible.

Abstract
The synthesis, physical, and spectroscopic properties of a series of metal complexes bridged by the redox-active chloranilate ligand are described. Compounds containing the (CAcat,cat)4- ligand, where (CAcat,cat)4- represents the fully reduced aromatic form of chloranilate, have been prepared by two different routes from H2CA and H4CA starting materials; the corresponding (CAsq,cat)3- analogue was obtained by one-electron oxidation with decamethylferrocenium tetrafluoroborate. Homo- and heterobimetallic complexes containing CrIII and GaIII with chloranilate have been prepared, yielding the following six complexes: [Ga2(tren)2(CAcat,cat)](BPh4)2 (1), [Ga2(tren)2(CAsq,cat)](BPh4)2(BF4) (2), [GaCr(tren)2(CAcat,cat)](BPh4)2 (3), [GaCr(tren)2(CAsq,cat)](BPh4)2(BF4) (4), [Cr2(tren)2(CAcat,cat)] (BPh4)2 (5), and [Cr2(tren)2(CAsq,cat)](BPh4)2(BF4) (6) (where tren is tris(2-aminoethyl)amine). Single-crystal X-ray structures have been obtained for complexes 1, 3, and 5; nearly identical C-C bond distances within the quinoidal ligand confirm the aromatic character of the bridge in each case. Complex 2 exhibits a temperature-independent magnetic moment of microeff = 1.64 +/- 0.04 microB in the solid state between 4 and 350 K, consistent with the CAsq,cat formulation of the ligand and an S = 1/2 ground state for complex 2. Complex 3 exhibits a value of microeff = 3.44 +/- 0.09 microB that is also temperature-independent, indicating an S = 3/2 ground state. Complexes 4-6 are all influenced by Heisenberg spin exchange. The temperature-independent behavior of complexes 4 and 6 indicate the presence of strong antiferromagnetic exchange between the CrIII and the (sq,cat) bridging radical yielding well-isolated ground states of S = 1 and 5/2 for 4 and 6, respectively. In contrast, complex 5 exhibits a weak intramolecular antiferromagnetic exchange interaction between the two CrIII centers (J = -2 cm-1 for H = -2Jŝ1.ŝ2) via superexchange through the diamagnetic CAcat, cat bridge. The absorption spectra of the CAsq,cat-containing complexes exhibit a number of sharp, relatively intense features in fluid solution. Group theoretical arguments coupled with a qualitative ligand-field analysis including the effects of Heisenberg spin exchange suggest that several of the observed transitions are a consequence of exchange interactions in both the ground- and excited-state manifolds of the compounds.

Abstract
Dinuclear [(TPyA)MII(CA2-)MII(TPyA)]2+ [TPyA=tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine; CA2-=chloranilate dianion; M=Co (1(2+)), Fe (2(2+))] complexes have been prepared by the reaction of M(BF4)(2).6H2O, TPyA, H2CA, and triethylamine in MeOH solution. Their reduced forms [(TPyA)MII(CA*3-)MII(TPyA)]+ [M=Co(1+), Fe (2+)] have been synthesized by using cobaltocene, and oxidized forms of 1, [(TPyA)CoIII(CAn)CoIII(TPyA)]z+ [z=3, n=3- (1(3+)); z=4, n=2- (1(4+))], have been obtained by using FcBF4 and ThianBF4 (Fc=ferrocenium; Thian=thianthrinium), respectively. The dinuclear compound bridged chloranilates (CA2- or CA*3-) were isolated and characterized by X-ray crystallography, electrochemistry, magnetism, and EPR spectroscopy. Unlike the other redox products, valence ambiguous 13+ forms via a complex redox-induced valence electron rearrangement whereby the one-electron oxidation of the [CoIICA2-CoII]2+ core forms [CoIIICA*3-CoIII]3+, not the expected simple 1-e- transfer mixed-valent [CoIICA2-CoIII]3+ core. The M ions in 1 and 2 have a distorted octahedral geometry by coordination with four nitrogens of a TPyA, two oxygens of a chloranilate. Due to the interdimer offset face-to-face pi-pi and/or herringbone interactions, all complexes show extended 1-D and/or 2-D supramolecular structures. The existence of CA*3- in 1(3+) is confirmed from both solid-state magnetic and solution EPR data. Co-based 1n+ exhibit antiferromagnetic interactions [1(2+): g=2.24, J/kB=-0.65 K (-0.45 cm-1); 1+: g=2.36, J/kB=-75 K (52 cm-1)], while Fe-based 2n+ exhibit ferromagnetic interactions [2(2+): g=2.08, J/kB=1.0 K (0.70 cm-1); 2+: g=2.03, J/kB=28 K (19 cm-1)] [H=-2JS1.S2 for 12+ and 2(2+); H=-2J(S1.S2+S2.S3) for 1+ and 2+]. Thus, due to direct spin exchange CA*3- is a much strong spin coupling linkage than the superexchange spin-coupling pathway provided by CA2-.

Abstract
Unprecedented strong electronic communication has been found in dimolybdenum pairs containing quadruply bonded Mo2(DAniF)3(+) (DAniF = N,N'-di-p-anisylformamidinate) units linked by dioxolene (C6X2O4(2-)) anions. The neutral compounds [Mo2(DAniF)3]2(C6X2O4) (1, X = H; 2, X = Cl; 3, X = NO2) and the singly oxidized products {[Mo2(DAniF)3]2(C6X2O4)Mo2}PF6 (4, X = H; 5, X = Cl) have been synthesized and characterized by X-ray crystallography and spectroscopic methods. Unusually short Mo-O distances (approximately 2.05 A for 1 and 2, and approximately 2.01 A for 4 and 5) are implicated in the remarkably strong interaction between [Mo2] units via the linkers. This leads to an extensive charge delocalization in the mixed-valence species, which is mediated by the dioxolene linker, as revealed by the large deltaE(1/2) values (763, 795, and 816 mV for 1, 2, and 3, respectively). Additional evidence for the strong electronic coupling is provided by UV-vis, NIR, and EPR spectroscopies and DFT calculations.

Abstract
[(TPA)(OH)FeIIIOFeIII(OH)(TPA)][Fe(CA)3]0.5(BF4)0.5.1.5MeOH.H2O (1) which possesses both the [FeIII(CA)3]3- (CA= chloranilate) and hydroxooxoiron(III) ions has had its structure determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The 2-300 K magnetic susceptibility of 1 provides the magnetic parameters, g = 2.07, J/kB = -165 K (115 cm-1), theta = -1 K, and the spin impurity, rho = 0.05, which indicates a strong antiferromagnetic interaction between iron(III) ions via the oxo anion.
