Abstract
The analysis of the absolute configuration, enantiomeric composition, and concentration of chiral compounds are frequently encountered tasks across the chemical and health sciences. Chiroptical sensing methods can streamline this work and allow high-throughput screening with remarkable reduction of operational time and cost. During the last few years, significant methodological advances with innovative chirality sensing systems, the use of computer-generated calibration curves, machine learning assistance, and chemometric data processing, to name a few, have emerged and are now matched with commercially available multi-well plate CD readers. These developments have reframed the chirality sensing space and provide new opportunities that are of interest to a large group of chemists. This review will discuss chirality sensing strategies and applications with representative small-molecule CD sensors. Emphasis will be given to important milestones and recent advances that accelerate chiral compound analysis by outperforming traditional methods, conquer new directions, and pioneering efforts that lie at the forefront of chiroptical high-throughput screening developments. The goal is to provide the reader with a thorough understanding of the current state and a perspective of future directions of this rapidly emerging field.

Abstract
Flexible biphenyls have been applied as efficient and practical chiroptical probes for absolute configuration assignment to chiral primary amines. The mechanism of the central-to-axial chirality transfer from the amine moiety to the conformationally flexible biphenyl system has been determined by NMR and computational studies. This allowed proposing a general non-empirical rule in order to establish, simply by looking at the sign of the 250 nm A band in the ECD spectrum of the biphenyl derivative, the torsion of the biphenyl and thus the absolute configuration of the amine. The method proved to be very reliable and sensitive, allowing treatment of samples on the μmol scale and permitting the simultaneous determination of the amine sample's absolute configuration and enantiopurity.

Abstract
The preferred helical screw senses of chiral α-amino acids with a C(α)-tetrasubstituted α-carbon atom, as determined in the crystal state by X-ray diffraction analyses on derivatives and peptides, are reviewed. This survey covers C(α)-methylated and C(α)-ethylated α-amino acids, as well as α-amino acids cyclized on the α-carbon, including those characterized by the combination of lack of chirality at the α-carbon with either side-chain or axial chirality. Although, in general, chiral C(α)-tetrasubstituted α-amino acids show a less pronounced bias toward a single helical screw sense than their proteinogenic (C(α)-trisubstituted) counterparts, our analysis highlights significant differences in terms of magnitude and direction of such a bias among the various sub-families of residues, and between individual amino acids within each sub-family as well. The experimental findings can be rationalized, at least in part, on the basis of steric considerations.

Abstract
Circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy is one of the most useful techniques for the stereochemical analysis of chiral biopolymers and fine chemicals. It has become invaluable for the assignment of the absolute configuration, the study of conformational isomers, and the determination of racemization kinetics of CD active chiral compounds. Molecular interactions between a nonracemic chiral substrate and a chromophoric, CD-silent probe that is achiral or exists as a racemic mixture of rapidly interconverting enantiomeric conformations or configurations can induce a strong, characteristic chiroptical readout. A covalent or noncovalent binding event that coincides with a well-defined asymmetric induction process can effectively imprint the chiral information of the substrate on the stereodynamic sensor and thus generate intense Cotton effects in the UV region of the latter. The probe can thus function as a stereochemical reporter unit and analysis of the CD spectrum often provides accurate information about the absolute configuration and enantiomeric composition of the substrate used. In this review, recent developments in circular dichroism analysis of chiral compounds with stereodynamic probes are described and particular emphasis is given to sensor design, chiral induction processes and applications scope.

Abstract
Stereoisomerism is a fundamental chemistry issue and has been intensively investigated because of its importance in organic chemistry, biology, and pharmacology. Molecules with freely rotatable single bonds have many interconvertable conformers. Herein, we report the surface-adsorption-induced conformer resolution by employing azobenzene-3,3-dicarboxylic acid (ADA-33) as a model compound. Two linear assembly phases composed of trans conformers on a highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) surface are observed by scanning tunneling microscopy. With the codeposition with 1-octanoic acid (OA), only one trans conformer of ADA-33 can be recognized by OA to form a two-component assembly with alternately arranged ADA-33 and OA stripes, which can be attributed to the epitaxial assembly of ADA-33 and OA on the HOPG surface, and weak hydrogen bonding exists between conformer I and OA molecules. The results are of significance with respect to the discrimination and resolution of conformers on a solid surface and provide molecular insights into the coadsorption assembly on the surface.

Abstract
The monomer 1 derived from achiral 1-(aminoxy)cyclopropanecarboxylic acid (OAcc) and oligopeptides 2-9 consisting of a chiral alpha-aminoxy acid and an achiral alpha-aminoxy acid such as OAcc were synthesized and their structures characterized. The eight-membered-ring intramolecular hydrogen bond, namely the alpha N-O turn, was formed between adjacent residues independent of their chirality. However, the helix formation was sequence-dependent. Dipeptide 2 bearing chiral alpha-aminoxy acid (d-OAA) at the N-terminus and achiral OAcc at the C-terminus preferentially adopted a right-handed 1.8(8) helical structure, but dipeptide 3 (OAcc-d-OAA) did not. Theoretical calculation results, in good agreement with experimental ones, revealed that the biased handedness of alpha N-O turn found in OAcc residue depends on its preceding chiral residue. It was then found that the helical conformation was destroyed in the case of oligopeptides 6 and 7 [OAA-(OAcc)(n), n = 2, 3]. The crystal structure of tripeptide 8 ((i)PrCO-d-OVal-OAcc-d-OVal-NH(i)Bu) further disclosed the helical structure formed by three consecutive homochiral alpha N-O turns. This study has uncovered achiral aminoxy acid residues such as the OAcc unit as a useful building block to be incorporated into chiral aminoxy peptides to mimic chiral helix structure.

Abstract
A novel, cis-transoidal poly-(phenylacetylene) bearing a carboxybiphenyl group as the pendant (poly-1) was prepared by polymerization of (4'-ethoxycarbonyl-4-biphenylyl)acetylene with a rhodium catalyst followed by hydrolysis of the ester groups. Upon complexation with various chiral amines and amino alcohols in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), the polymer exhibited characteristic induced circular dichroism (ICD) in the UV/Vis region due to the predominantly one-handed helix formation of the polymer backbone as well as an excess of a single-handed, axially twisted conformation of the pendant biphenyl group. Poly-1 complexed with (R)-2-amino-1-propanol showed unique time-dependent inversion of the macromolecular helicity. Furthermore, the preferred-handed helical conformation of poly-1 induced by a chiral amine was further "memorized" after the chiral amine was replaced with achiral 2-aminoethanol or n-butylamine in DMSO. In sharp contrast to the previously reported memory in poly((4-carboxyphenyl)acetylene), the present helicity memory of poly-1 was accompanied by memory of the twisted biphenyl chirality in the pendants. Unprecedentedly, the helicity memory of poly-1 with achiral 2-aminoethanol was found to occur simultaneously with inversion of the axial chirality of the biphenyl groups followed by memory of the inverted biphenyl chirality, thus showing a significant change in the CD spectral pattern.

Abstract
An induced axial chirality of the biphenyl core of the Bip (2',1':1,2;1'',2'':3,4-dibenzcyclohepta-1,3-diene-6-amino-6-carboxylic acid) residue in the terminally protected dipeptides Boc-Bip-beta-Xaa*-OMe (beta-Xaa* = L-beta(3)-HAla, L-beta(3)-HVal, L-beta(3)-HLeu, L-beta(3)-HPro, trans-(1S,2S)-ACHC, trans-(1R,2R)-ACHC, trans-(1S,2S)-ACPC, trans-(1R,2R)-ACPC) resulted in an induced circular dichroism, revealing the usefulness of the Bip method for a reliable and fast assignment of the absolute configuration of chiral beta-amino acids. Remarkably, the Bip method was also applied to the unique spin-labeled, cyclic, beta-amino acids cis/trans-beta-TOAC and trans-POAC. In particular, this study allowed the assignment of the unknown absolute configurations of the enantiomers of the latter compound.

Abstract
The title heterocyclic donors undergo reversible C-C bond formation/cleavage upon electron transfer (dynamic redox behavior). The helical sense in both neutral and cationic states is interconvertible by facile ring flipping. The pi-type asymmetric center on the azepine nitrogen atom induces a significant degree of diasteromeric preference, thus endowing strong CD activity based on exciton coupling. Chiroptical properties could be modified not only by redox reactions but also by heat and protonation. The present redox pairs can serve as unprecedented three-way-input (e, H+, delta) and two-way-output (UV/Vis, CD) response systems.
