Abstract
Electrogenerated chemiluminescence (ECL) is a light emission phenomenon caused by electrochemically generated radical anions (R•-) and cations (R•+), in which the ion annihilation results in the formation of a pair of excited (R*) and ground state (R) of a luminescent molecule. Here, the ECL properties of pyrene (Py) and 2,7-di-tert-butylpyrene (di-t-BuPy) are reported. It was found that at a commonly employed concentration (1 mM), the ECL spectra were time-dependent because of increasing the oligomer emission and increasing the concentration of R near R*, leading to an enhancement of the excimer emission. At a low concentration range (20-30 μM), the shape of the ECL spectra containing the monomer and excimer emission was determined by isolated pairs of R* and R, which were generated through ion annihilation of R•- and R•+. It was found that in the ECL of Py and di-t-BuPy originated from the isolated pairs of R•- and R•+, 58 and 48% of the excited states were the excimer states, respectively. Diffusion equation analysis indicates that the lower excimer formation in the case of di-t-BuPy is because of a farther initial separation distance between R* and R, i.e., a longer electron transfer distance between the radical ions. The Marcus model for the electron transfer kinetics suggests that the farther electron transfer distance is mainly caused by the larger molecular size, which resulted in a smaller reorganization energy of the solvent acetonitrile molecule. Taking advantage of the photophysical and electrochemical properties of Py and di-t-Bu Py, the monomer and excimer emission in ECL is discussed.

Abstract
Owing to the high technology maturity of thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitter design with a specific molecular shape, extremely high-performance organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) have recently been achieved via various doping techniques. Recently, undoped OLEDs have drawn immense attention because of their manufacturing cost reduction and procedure simplification. However, capable materials as host emitters are rare and precious because general fluorophores in high-concentration states suffer from serious aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) and undergo exciton quenching. In this work, a series of diboron materials, CzDBA, iCzDBA, and tBuCzDBA, is introduced to realize the effect of steric hindrance and the molecular aspect ratio via experimental and theoretical studies. We computed transition electric dipole moment (TEDM) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations as a proof-of-concept model to investigate the molecular stacking in neat films. It is worth noting that the pure tBuCzDBA film with a high horizontal ratio of 92% is employed to achieve a nondoped OLED with an excellent external quantum efficiency of 26.9%. In addition, we demonstrated the first ultrathin emitting layer (1 nm) TADF device, which exhibited outstanding power efficiency. This molecular design and high-performance devices show the potential of power-saving and economical fabrication for advanced OLEDs.

Abstract
Emissive excimers, which are formed by planar polycyclic aromatic fluorophores (e.g., coumarin), enable high contrast tumor imaging. However, it is still challenging to "turn on" excimer fluorescence in physiological dilute solutions. The biocompatible CBT-Cys click condensation reaction enables both intra- and intermolecular aggregations of the as-loaded fluorophores on the probe molecules, which may promote the generation of emissive excimers in a synergistic manner. As a proof-of-concept, we herein design a fluorescence probe Cbz-Gly-Pro-Cys(StBu)-Lys(coumarin)-CBT (Cbz-GPC(StBu)K(Cou)-CBT), which can be activated by FAP-α under tumor-inherent reduction conditions, undergo a CBT-Cys click reaction, and self-assemble into coumarin nanoparticle Cou-CBT-NP to "turn on" the excimer fluorescence. In vitro and in vivo studies validate that this "smart" probe realizes efficient excimer fluorescence imaging of FAP-α-overexpressed tumor cells with high contrast and enhanced accumulation, respectively. We anticipate that this probe can be applied for diagnosis of FAP-α-related diseases in the clinic in near future.

Abstract
A new dietherpyrene-cored diamine monomer, namely, 4,5-bis(4-aminophenoxy)pyrene, was successful synthesized and formed a series of electroactive polyamides with an aryloxy linkage in a polymer main chain and bearing pyrene chromophore as a pendent group using conventional one-pot polycondensation reactions with commercial aromatic/aliphatic dicarboxylic acids. The resulting polyamides exhibited good solubility in polar organic solvents and, further, can be made into transparent films. They had appropriate levels of thermal stability with moderately high glass-transition values. The dilute NMP solutions of these polyamides exhibited pyrene characteristic fluorescence and also showed a remarkable additional excimer emission peak centered at 475 nm. Electrochemical studies of these polymer films showed that these polyamides have both p- and n-dopable states as a result of the formation of radical cations and anions of the electroactive pyrene moieties.

Abstract

Novel approaches
to modify the spectral output of the sun have
seen a surge in interest recently, with triplet–triplet annihilation
driven photon upconversion (TTA-UC) gaining widespread recognition
due to its ability to function under low-intensity, noncoherent light.
Herein, four diphenylanthracene (DPA) dimers are investigated to explore
how the structure of these dimers affects upconversion efficiency.
Also, the mechanism responsible for intramolecular upconversion is
elucidated. In particular, two models are compared using steady-state
and time-resolved simulations of the TTA-UC emission intensities and
kinetics. All dimers perform TTA-UC efficiently in the presence of
the sensitizer platinum octaethylporphyrin. The meta-coupled dimer
1,3-DPA2 performs best yielding a 21.2% upconversion quantum
yield (out of a 50% maximum), which is close to that of the reference
monomer DPA (24.0%). Its superior performance compared to the other
dimers is primarily ascribed to the longer triplet lifetime of this
dimer (4.7 ms), thus reinforcing the importance of this parameter.
Comparisons between simulations and experiments reveal that the double-sensitization
mechanism is part of the mechanism of intramolecular upconversion
and that this additional pathway could be of great significance under
specific conditions. The results from this study can thus act as a
guide not only in terms of annihilator design but also for the design
of future solid-state systems where intramolecular exciton migration
is anticipated to play a major role.

Abstract
Highly emissive fluorophores based on polyaromatic hydrocarbons with tunable emission properties and aggregated structures play a very important role in relevant functional studies. In this study, a novel alkynylpyrene derivative 1 was synthesized, which exhibits unimolecular to excimer emission in methanol with an increasing concentration accompanied by the formation of nanovesicles via the π-π stacking, hydrogen bond and hydrophobic interaction. The self-assembly behavior as well as emission properties of 1 in aprotic polar solvents (ACN, acetone, DMF and DMSO) can also be adjusted by the volume fraction of the poor solvent H2O, which can induce 1 self-assembly to excimer state and could be applied in information transfer. Moreover, upon visible light irradiation, photoswitchable performance of nanovesicles of 1 was observed in which the emission markedly changes from yellow to blue; this is attributed to the cycloaddition reaction of alkynyl groups and singlet oxygen, which can be generated without the addition of external photosensitizers. The multi-responsive and fluorescence behavior of the alkynylpyrene derivative show that the self-assembly can be used to expand the development of this type of fluorophores, and the novel photoinduced tunability of the fluorescence emission provides an effective strategy to obtain high-performance transmitting and sensing materials.

Abstract
Aromatic rearrangement reactions are useful tools in the organic chemist's toolbox when generating uncommon substitution patterns. However, it is difficult to precisely translocate a functional group in (hetero) arene systems, with the exception of halogen atoms in a halogen dance reaction. Here, we describe an unprecedented "ester dance" reaction: a predictable translocation of an ester group from one carbon atom to another on an aromatic ring. Specifically, a phenyl carboxylate substituent can be shifted from one carbon to an adjacent carbon on a (hetero) aromatic ring under palladium catalysis to often give a thermodynamically favored, regioisomeric product with modest to good conversions. The obtained ester moiety can be further converted to various aromatic derivatives through the use of classic and state-of-the-art transformations including amidation, acylations, and decarbonylative couplings.

Abstract
We report the photophysical properties of a synthetic asymmetric azine-based compound (17Z,18E)-4'-((E)-3-phenylallylidene)-1'-(dimethylamino)-1-((pyren-8-yl)methylene)hydrazine (PYNC). The molecule PYNC shows an appreciable red shift in the emission maximum in a wide range of solvents. In water, PYNC shows the characteristic feature of excimer formation exclusively. However, in all other solvents, the excimer band is present alongside the charge transfer emission band. The assignment of charge transfer and excimer bands has been established by various steady-state emission spectral data. PYNC, owing to this novel excimer-coupled charge transfer phenomenon, can be a potential probe for studying various supramolecular assemblies of biological interest.

Abstract
The photophysical properties of anthanthrene, four anthanthrene derivatives containing varying phenyl and p-tBu-phenyl substituents, and two anthanthrones with phenyl and p-tBu-phenyl substituents are examined. In general, as the anthanthrenes and anthanthrones become more substituted, red-shifts are observed in the peak maxima of the ground- and excited-state absorption and fluorescence spectra. The anthanthrones have large (>0.8) intersystem crossing (ISC) quantum yields (ΦT) likely caused by nπ* character in the ground or excited states. A bromo-substituted anthanthrene has a unity ISC yield due to an ISC rate constant of 2.5 × 1010 s-1 caused by heavy-atom induced, spin-orbit coupling. This leads to low fluorescence quantum yields (ΦF) in these three derivatives. The parent anthanthrene and remaining derivatives behave much differently. All have ΦF values from 0.58-0.84 with lower ΦT values as radiative decay outcompetes ISC. The anthanthrones have remarkable excited-state absorption with strong, broad transitions across the visible region with weaker transitions extending to nearly two μm. The anthanthrenes have very similar-shaped, broad transitions in the visible which can be shifted ∼60 nm by controlling the substituents. The triplet lifetimes range from 31-1200 μs and increase as the ISC yields decrease; the bromo-substituted anthanthrene is the shortest, followed by the anthanthrones then the other anthanthrenes. The rate of triplet-triplet annihilation is also affected by the presence of substituents; as the amount of steric bulk is increased, the rate of annihilation decreases.

Abstract
Two analogues to the fluorescent amyloid probe 2,5-bis(4'-hydroxy-3'-carboxy-styryl)benzene (X-34) were synthesized based on the trans-stilbene pyrene scaffold (Py1SA and Py2SA). The compounds show strikingly different emission spectra when bound to preformed Aβ1-42 fibrils. This remarkable emission difference is retained when bound to amyloid fibrils of four distinct proteins, suggesting a common binding configuration for each molecule. Density functional theory calculations show that Py1SA is twisted, while Py2SA is more planar. Still, an analysis of the highest occupied molecular orbitals (HOMOs) and lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals (LUMOs) of the two compounds indicates that the degree of electronic coupling between the pyrene and salicylic acid (SA) moieties is larger in Py1SA than in Py2SA. Excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) coupled-charge transfer (ICT) was observed for the anionic form in polar solvents. We conclude that ICT properties of trans-stilbene derivatives can be utilized for amyloid probe design with large changes in emission spectra and decay times from analogous chemical structures depending on the detailed physical nature of the binding site.

Abstract
Fundamental insight into excimer formation of Cz9PhAn, achieving a single-component, high-performance WOLED.
Fundamental insight into excimer formation has been gained by using 9,10-bis[4-(9-carbazolyl)phenyl]anthracene] (Cz9PhAn) as a probe. Cz9PhAn exhibits a highly emissive blue fluorescence in solution and is found to emit a panchromatic white light spectrum (400–750 nm) in film, powder and single crystal, in which an additional excimer band appears at ∼550 nm. Detailed structural analyses, emission relaxation dynamics and a theoretical approach conclude the formation of an anthracene*/phenyl ring excimer through an overlap between π* (anthracene) and π (phenyl ring) orbitals in a face-to-edge stacking orientation. The rate of excimer formation is determined to be 2.2 × 109 s–1 at room temperature, which requires coupling with lattice motion with an activation energy of 0.44 kcal mol–1. Exploiting Cz9PhAn as a single emitter, a fluorescent white organic light emitting diode (WOLED) is fabricated with a maximum external quantum efficiency (ηext) of 3.6% at 1000 cd m–2 (4.2 V) and Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates of (0.30, 0.33). The white-light Cz9PhAn reveals a preferred orientation of the transition dipole moment in the emitting layer to enhance light outcoupling. This non-doped, single component (Cz9PhAn) WOLED greatly reduces the complexity of the fabrication process, rendering a green and cost-effective alternative among the contemporary display/lighting technologies.

Abstract
Comb-shaped amphiphilic polymers are rapidly emerging as an alternative approach to amphiphilic block copolymers for hydrophobic drug solubilization. These polymers consist of a homopolymer or copolymer backbone to which hydrophobic and hydrophilic pendant groups can be grafted resulting in a comb-like architecture. The hydrophobic pendants may consist of homopolymers, copolymers and other low-molecular weight hydrophobic structures. In this review, we focus on hydrophobically modified preformed homopolymers. Comb-shaped amphiphilic polymers possess reduced critical aggregation concentration values compared with traditional surfactant micelles indicating increased stability with decreased disruption experienced on dilution. They have been fabricated with diverse architectures and multifunctional properties such as site-specific targeting and external stimuli-responsive nature. The application of comb-shaped amphiphilic polymers is expanding; here we report on the progress achieved so far in hydrophobic drug solubilization for both intravenous and oral delivery.

Abstract
The photophysics of free pyrenedicarboxamide (Py-DCA) in solution as well as of single-stranded and double-stranded oligonucleotides (ss and ds ONs) containing 1-7 pyrene building blocks per strand were studied by steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy. It was found that the fluorescence quantum yield Phi(F) of free Py-DCA chromophore in solution is rather high (Phi(F) = 0.44). However, after incorporation of the chromophore into a ss ON the monomeric chromophore fluorescence is quenched more than 40-fold due to electron-transfer reactions with ON bases. An increase of the number n of neighboring pyrenes in an ON results in Phi(F) growth up to 0.25 at n = 6. Starting from n = 2, all fluorescence belongs mainly to excimer formed by pyrene chromophores. Sections composed of multiple pyrenes may be considered as robust functional entities that may serve as independent modules in DNA-based, functional nano-architectures.

Abstract
In recent years, fluorescently labeled oligonucleotides have become a widely used tool in diagnostics, DNA sequencing, and nanotechnology. The recently developed (phenylethynyl)pyrenes are attractive dyes for nucleic acid labeling, with the advantages of long-wave emission relative to the parent pyrene, high fluorescence quantum yields, and the ability to form excimers. Herein, the synthesis of six (phenylethynyl)pyrene-functionalized locked nucleic acid (LNA) monomers M(1)-M(6) and their incorporation into DNA oligomers is described. Multilabeled duplexes display higher thermal stabilities than singly modified analogues. An increase in the number of phenylethynyl substituents attached to the pyrene results in decreased binding affinity towards complementary DNA and RNA and remarkable bathochromic shifts of absorption/emission maxima relative to the parent pyrene fluorochrome. This bathochromic shift leads to the bright fluorescence colors of the probes, which differ drastically from the blue emission of unsubstituted pyrene. The formation of intra- and interstrand excimers was observed for duplexes that have monomers M(1)-M(6) in both complementary strands and in numerous single-stranded probes. If more phenylethynyl groups are inserted, the detected excimer signals become more intense. In addition, (phenylethynyl)pyrenecarbonyl-LNA monomers M(4), M(5), and M(6) proved highly useful for the detection of single mismatches in DNA/RNA targets.
