Bioinspired oxidation of benzyl alcohol: The role of environment and nuclearity of the catalyst evaluated by multivariate analysis. J Inorg Biochem 2023; 240:112095. Abstract
Inspired by copper-containing enzymes such as galactose oxidase and catechol oxidase, in which distinct coordination environments and nuclearities lead to specific catalytic activities, we summarize here the catalytic properties of dinuclear and mononuclear copper species towards benzyl alcohol oxidation using a multivariate statistical approach. The new dinuclear [Cu2(μ-L1)(μ-pz)]2+ (1) is compared against the mononuclear [CuL2Cl] (2), where (L1)- and (L2)- are the respective deprotonated forms of 2,6-bis((bis(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)amino)methyl)-4-methylphenol, and 3-((bis(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)amino)methyl)-2-hydroxy-5-methylbenzaldehyde and (pz)- is a pyrazolato bridge. Copper(II) perchlorate (CP) is used as control. The catalytic oxidation of benzyl alcohol is pursued, aiming to assess the role of the ligand environment and nuclearity. The multivariate statistical approach allows for the search of optimal catalytic conditions, considering variables such as catalyst load, hydrogen peroxide load, and time. Species 1, 2 and CP promoted selective production of benzaldehyde at different yields, with only negligible amounts of benzoic acid. Under normalized conditions, 2 showed superior catalytic activity. This species is 3.5-fold more active than the monometallic control CP, and points out to the need for an efficient ligand framework. Species 2 is 6-fold more active than the dinuclear 1, and indicates the favored nuclearity for the conversion of alcohols into aldehydes.

Abstract
C-H activation has surfaced as an increasingly powerful tool for molecular sciences, with notable applications to material sciences, crop protection, drug discovery, and pharmaceutical industries, among others. Despite major advances, the vast majority of these C-H functionalizations required precious 4d or 5d transition metal catalysts. Given the cost-effective and sustainable nature of earth-abundant first row transition metals, the development of less toxic, inexpensive 3d metal catalysts for C-H activation has gained considerable recent momentum as a significantly more environmentally-benign and economically-attractive alternative. Herein, we provide a comprehensive overview on first row transition metal catalysts for C-H activation until summer 2018.

Abstract
The chemistry of vanadium has seen remarkable activity in the past 50 years. In the present review, reactions catalyzed by homogeneous and supported vanadium complexes from 2008 to 2018 are summarized and discussed. Particular attention is given to mechanistic and kinetics studies of vanadium-catalyzed reactions including oxidations of alkanes, alkenes, arenes, alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, and sulfur species, as well as oxidative C-C and C-O bond cleavage, carbon-carbon bond formation, deoxydehydration, haloperoxidase, cyanation, hydrogenation, dehydrogenation, ring-opening metathesis polymerization, and oxo/imido heterometathesis. Additionally, insights into heterogeneous vanadium catalysis are provided when parallels can be drawn from the homogeneous literature.

Abstract
The use of gold as a promotor of alkane hydrocarboxylation is reported for the first time. Cyclohexane hydrocarboxylation to cyclohexanecarboxylic acid (up to 55% yield) with CO, water, and peroxodisulfate in a water/acetonitrile medium at circa 50 °C has been achieved in the presence of gold nanoparticles deposited by a colloidal method on a carbon xerogel in its original form (CX), after oxidation with HNO3 (-ox), or after oxidation with HNO3 and subsequent treatment with NaOH (-ox-Na). Au/CX-ox-Na behaves as re-usable catalyst maintaining its initial activity and selectivity for at least seven consecutive cycles. Green metric values of atom economy or carbon efficiency also attest to the improvement brought by this novel catalytic system to the hydrocarboxylation of cyclohexane.

Abstract
In recent years, 51V magic angle spinning (MAS) NMR spectroscopy has been widely used to characterize vanadium centers in biology, biomimetic complexes, and inorganic compounds of medicinal and industrial relevance. It has been demonstrated that 51V NMR parameters are sensitive probes of the coordination geometry and chemical environment of the metal center, beyond the first coordination sphere. To establish the relationships between NMR parameters and structure of the vanadium centers, over the past decade a large series of coordination complexes have been analyzed by MAS NMR spectroscopy. It has been demonstrated that the interpretation of the NMR parameters requires the use of theoretical methods, such as density functional (DFT) theory, whereby the experimental NMR observables are linked to the electronic and structural properties of a molecule. DFT calculations have been successfully employed to not only predict NMR parameters but to also yield valuable information regarding the structure and function of various vanadium compounds. In this report, we review the current state of the field, and present a survey of bioinorganic vanadium complexes as well as vanadium-dependent haloperoxidases analyzed using 51V MAS NMR spectroscopy and DFT calculations, to illustrate the rich information content available from such a combined approach.

Abstract
[CoCl(μ-Cl)(Hpz(Ph))3]2 (1) and [CoCl2(Hpz(Ph))4] (2) were obtained by reaction of CoCl2 with HC(pz(Ph))3 and Hpz(Ph), respectively (Hpz(Ph)=3-phenylpyrazole). The compounds were isolated as air-stable solids and fully characterized by IR and far-IR spectroscopy, MS(ESI+/-), elemental analysis, cyclic voltammetry (CV), controlled potential electrolysis, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Electrochemical studies showed that 1 and 2 undergo single-electron irreversible Co(II)→Co(III) oxidations and Co(II)→Co(I) reductions at potentials measured by CV, which also allowed, in the case of dinuclear complex 1, the detection of electronic communication between the Co centers through the chloride bridging ligands. The electrochemical behavior of models of 1 and 2 were also investigated by density functional theory (DFT) methods, which indicated that the vertical oxidation of 1 and 2 (that before structural relaxation) affects mostly the chloride and pyrazolyl ligands, whereas adiabatic oxidation (that after the geometry relaxation) and reduction are mostly metal centered. Compounds 1 and 2 and, for comparative purposes, other related scorpionate and pyrazole cobalt complexes, exhibit catalytic activity for the peroxidative oxidation of cyclohexane to cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone under mild conditions (room temperature, aqueous H2O2). In situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy studies indicated that the species derived from complexes 1 and 2 during the oxidation of cyclohexane (i.e., Ox-1 and Ox-2, respectively) are analogous and contain a Co(III) site. Complex 2 showed low in vitro cytotoxicity toward the HCT116 colorectal carcinoma and MCF7 breast adenocarcinoma cell lines.

Abstract
A series of vanadium(V) complexes with o-dioxolene (catecholato) ligands and an ancillary ligand, (N-(salicylideneaminato)ethylenediamine) (hensal), were investigated using 51V solid-state magic angle spinning NMR spectroscopy (51V MAS NMR) to assess the local environment of the vanadium(V). The solid-state 51V NMR parameters of vanadium(V) complexes with a related potentially tetradentate ancillary ligand (N-salicylidene-N'-(2-hydroxyethyl)ethylenediamine) (h2shed) were previously shown to be associated with the size of the HOMO-LUMO gap in the complex, and as such provide insights on the interaction between metal ion and ligand (P. B. Chatterjee, et al., Inorg. Chem 50 (2011) 9794). Our results show that the modification of the ancillary ligand does not impact the observed trend between complexes ranging from catechols with electron rich to electron poor substituents. However, the ancillary ligand does impact the size of the HOMO-LUMO separation in the parent complex and thus the solid-state vanadium NMR chemical shift of the unsubstituted vanadium complex. For these complexes significant changes observed in the isotropic shifts and more modest changes detected in the CQ reflect the electronic changes in the complex as the catechol is varied. However, no obvious trend was observed in the chemical shift anisotropies (δσ and ησ) with the variation in the catechol. The electronic changes in the coordination environment of the vanadium can be described using solid-state 51V NMR spectroscopy.

Abstract
A direct, selective and highly efficient method has been developed for the hydrocarboxylation of C(n) gaseous alkanes into C(n+1) carboxylic acids, in aqueous acid-solvent-free medium at low temperatures. The approach is based on a metal-free or copper-promoted reaction of ethane, propane or n-butane with carbon monoxide and water, in a H(2)O/MeCN medium at 50-60 degrees C, in the presence of potassium peroxodisulfate. The effects of various reaction parameters, such as the absence or presence of a copper promoter, solvent composition, temperature, time, CO and alkane pressure, were studied. A free radical mechanism was confirmed by radical trap experiments involving acyl radical formation, oxidation and subsequent hydroxylation by water. Remarkable yields (based on alkane) of carboxylic acids in the 34-41 % range were achieved even in the metal-free systems, although in the presence of a tetracopper(II) triethanolaminate derived promoter they reach superior values of 58 and 87 % for the hydrocarboxylations of propane and n-butane, respectively; in these cases, branched isobutyric and 2-methylbutyric acids were the predominant products. From a green perspective, important features of the present alkane hydrocarboxylations include the exceptional metal-free, mild and acid-solvent-free reaction conditions, the operation in aqueous medium with a rare hydroxylating role of water, with high selectivities, and yields of carboxylic acids. Taken together, these conditions correspond to the mildest and the most efficient method so far reported for the oxidative functionalisation of gaseous alkanes.

Abstract
Using (51)V magic angle spinning solid-state NMR spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations we have characterized the chemical shift and quadrupolar coupling parameters for two eight-coordinate vanadium complexes, [PPh(4)][V(v)(HIDPA)(2)] and [PPh(4)][V(v)(HIDA)(2)]; HIDPA = 2,2'-(hydroxyimino)dipropionate and HIDA = 2,2'-(hydroxyimino)diacetate. The coordination geometry under examination is the less common non-oxo eight coordinate distorted dodecahedral geometry that has not been previously investigated by solid-state NMR spectroscopy. Both complexes were isolated by oxidizing their reduced forms: [V(iv)(HIDPA)(2)](2-) and [V(iv)(HIDA)(2)](2-). V(iv)(HIDPA)(2)(2-) is also known as amavadin, a vanadium-containing natural product present in the Amanita muscaria mushroom and is responsible for vanadium accumulation in nature. The quadrupolar coupling constants, C(Q), are found to be moderate, 5.0-6.4 MHz while the chemical shift anisotropies are relatively small for vanadium complexes, -420 and -360 ppm. The isotropic chemical shifts in the solid state are -220 and -228 ppm for the two compounds, and near the chemical shifts observed in solution. Presumably this is a consequence of the combined effects of the increased coordination number and the absence of oxo groups. Density functional theory calculations of the electric field gradient parameters are in good agreement with the NMR results while the chemical shift parameters show some deviation from the experimental values. Future work on this unusual coordination geometry and a combined analysis by solid-state NMR and density functional theory should provide a better understanding of the correlations between experimental NMR parameters and the local structure of the vanadium centers.

Abstract
A convenient and clean route to transform, in aqueous medium, various alkanes to carboxylic acids via single-pot carboxylation with CO and water, under mild conditions, has been achieved, proceeding efficiently and selectively even without any metal catalyst and any acid additive, at low temperatures; the relevant hydroxylating role of H(2)O and radical mechanisms are disclosed by radical-trap, H(2)(18)O and DFT studies.
