Abstract
Small molecule-based chromogenic and fluorogenic probes play an indispensable role in many sensing applications. Ideal optical chemosensors should provide selectivity and sensitivity towards a variety of analytes. Synthetic accessibility and attractive photophysical properties have made squaraine dyes an enticing platform for the development of chemosensors. This review highlights the versatility of modular assemblies of squaraine-based chemosensors and chemodosimeters that take advantage of the availability of various structurally and functionally diverse recognition motifs, as well as utilizing additional recognition capabilities due to the unique structural features of the squaraine ring.

Abstract
Dye molecules that absorb light in the visible region are key components in many applications, including organic photovoltaics, biological fluorescent labeling, super-resolution microscopy, and energy transport. One family of dyes, known as squaraines, has received considerable attention recently due to their favorable electronic and photophysical properties. In addition, these dyes have a strong propensity for aggregation, which results in emergent materials properties, such as exciton delocalization. This will be of benefit in charge separation and energy transport along with fundamental studies in quantum information. Given the high structural tunability of squaraine dyes, it is possible that exciton delocalization could be tailored by modifying the substituents attached to the π-conjugated network. To date, limited theoretical studies have explored the role of substituent effects on the electronic and photophysical properties of squaraines in the context of DNA-templated dye aggregates and resultant excitonic behavior. We used ab initio theoretical methods to determine the effects of substituents on the electronic and photophysical properties for a series of nine different squaraine dyes. Solvation free energy was also investigated as an insight into changes in hydrophobic behavior from substituents. The role of molecular symmetry on these properties was also explored via conformation and substitution. We found that substituent effects are correlated with the empirical Hammett constant, which demonstrates their electron donating or electron withdrawing strength. Electron withdrawing groups were found to impact solvation free energy, transition dipole moment, static dipole difference, and absorbance more than electron donating groups. All substituents showed a redshift in absorption for the squaraine dye. In addition, solvation free energy increases with Hammett constant. This work represents a first step toward establishing design rules for dyes with desired properties for excitonic applications. Squaraine dyes are candidates for DNA-templated excitonic interactions. This work presents substituent effects on the electronic and photophysicalproperties of squaraine dyes and a correlation between empirical Hammettconstant and those properties.![]()

Abstract
Nucleophilic addition of phosphorus(iii) agents to the electrophilic core of intensely colored squaraine dyes gives a bleached zwitterionic adduct in good to excellent yields (up to 99%) at room temperature. The process can be reversed by adding specific transition metal complexes with high phosphorous(iii) affinity.

Abstract
One constraint of semiconducting polymer dots (Pdots), especially those with near-IR emission, is their low effective emitter ratio (∼1.5 mole percent), which limits their pH sensing performance. The other critical issue of existing Pdot-based pH sensors is their poor photostability. To address these issues, we developed a series of Pdots by dendronizing the squaraine-based pH responsive near-IR emitter, which is covalently incorporated into the polyfluorene (PFO) backbone. The fluorescence self-quenching of the NIR squaraine emitter was effectively suppressed at a high emitter concentration of 5 mole percent. Through controlling the individually incomplete energy transfer from the amorphous PFO donor to the blue β-phase PFO and NIR squaraine emitter, we obtained a ratiometric pH sensor with simultaneously improved pH sensitivity, brightness, and photostability. The Pdots showed a fast and reversible pH response over the whole biological pH range of 4.7 to 8.5. Intracellular pH mapping was successfully demonstrated using this ultra-bright and photostable Pdot-based pH indicator.

Abstract
The synthesis of an alternating squaraine-naphthalene diimide donor-acceptor low band gap polymer (1.14-1.40 eV) as well as its monomolecular analogue is presented. Spectroelectrochemistry experiments and transient absorption spectroscopy in the fs-time regime reveal an ultrafast population of a charge separated state for both polymer and monomer. Local excitation of the squaraine moiety is followed by population of intermediate states, presumably charge transfer states, followed by full charge separation, which occurs within a ca. 2 ps. Charge recombination takes place within 5.2 ps, probably because the system is close to the Marcus optimal region for barrierless ET. For the polymer, measurements of the transient absorption anisotropy show that neither charge nor does energy transfer take place within the lifetime of the charge separated state, indicating that this state is essentially confined within one donor-acceptor pair.

Abstract
A new fluoroionophore [E-4,4'-di(N-(2-pyridyl)amino)stilbene, E1] with a donor-acceptor-donor framework, which features a central stilbene (acceptor) fluorophore and two terminal pyridylamino (donor) ionophores, is reported. The probe displays an ultrasensitive fluorescence quenching response toward Hg(2+) in H(2)O/THF. Coordination of Hg(2+) to E1 affords a 2:1 complex, enabling the detection of Hg(2+) at a concentration as low as 4.4 × 10(-14) M. The interactions between the two species have been thoroughly characterized with UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Density functional theory calculations provide further insights into the nature of the fluorescence quenching response. In contrast, a fluorescent molecule with the donor-acceptor architecture, E-4-(N-(2-pyridyl)amino)stilbene (E4), exhibits a greatly attenuated fluorescence quenching response toward Hg(2+).

Abstract
We report herein the synthesis and characterization of a family of ligands containing different cation binding sites covalently connected to a thiopyrylium signalling reporter. The receptors L1-L6 are able to signal the presence of certain metal cations via three different channels; i.e. electrochemically, fluorogenically and chromogenically. An acetonitrile solution of L1-L6 shows a bright blue colour due to a charge-transfer band in the 575-585 nm region. The colour variation in acetonitrile of L1-L6 in the presence of the metal cations Ag+, Cd2+, Cu2+, Fe3+, Hg2+, Ni2+, Pb2+ and Zn2+ has been studied. A selective hypsochromic shift of the blue band was found for the systems L4-Pb2+ and L5-Hg2+. Additionally, L1-L6 are poorly fluorescent but coordination with certain metal cations induces an enhancement of the fluorescence at ca 500 nm. For instance, the presence of Cu2+ and Fe3+ induced a remarkable 42-fold and 45-fold enhancement in the emission intensity of L1 centred at 500 nm, respectively. Also remarkable was the 18-fold enhancement observed for L4 and L5 in the presence of Fe3+ and Cu2+, respectively. The electrochemical behaviour of receptors L1-L6 was studied in acetonitrile using platinum as a working electrode and [Bu4N][BF4] as a supporting electrolyte. This family of receptors showed a one-electron reversible redox process at ca. -0.46 V versus sce attributed to the reduction of the thiopyrylium group. A moderate anodic shift in the presence of certain metal cations was observed. The effect in the UV-visible spectra of acetonitrile solutions of receptor L1-L6 in the presence of anions was also studied. A remarkable bleaching was found in the presence of cyanide.

Abstract
A templated macrocyclization reaction was used to permanently encapsulate a highly fluorescent hydroxy-substituted squaraine dye inside a tetralactam macrocycle. The free squaraine dye is quite rigid due to internal hydrogen bonding and its photophysical properties hardly change upon encapsulation. A combination of X-ray and NMR data show that the surrounding tetralactam macrocycle adopts an unusually rigid chair conformation and does not undergo rapid pirouetting. Because of its large size and conformational rigidity, the macrocycle creates anisotropic NMR shielding zones that extend over the N,N-dibutylamino groups at each end of the squaraine thread. This shielding anisotropy allows hindered aryl-N rotation to be observed by NMR and provides direct experimental evidence that quinoid-like resonance structures are major contributors to the bis(N,N-dialkylaminophenyl)squaraine resonance hybrid.

Abstract
The chemical and photophysical properties of a fluorescent squaraine dye are greatly enhanced when it is mechanically encapsulated inside a tetralactam macrocycle. This feature article describes the synthesis, structure, and photophysical performance of first-generation squaraine rotaxanes, and shows how they can be used as fluorescent imaging probes and chemosensors.
