Abstract
The present work aimed to obtain discrete heavier metal complexes of unperturbed deprotonated bis-lawsone (hinge-like H2L = 2,2'-bis(3-hydroxy-1,4-napthoquinone). This is primarily due to its limited examples with lighter metal ions (Co, Zn, and Ga) and the fact that our earlier approach with the osmium ion facilitated its functionalisation. Herein, we demonstrated the successful synthesis and structural characterisation of L2--derived diruthenium [(bpy)2RuII(μ-L2-)RuII(bpy)2](ClO4)2 [1](ClO4)2 (S = 0), (acac)2RuIII(μ-L2-)RuIII(acac)22 (S = 1) and monoruthenium (pap)2Ru(L2-) 3 (S = 0) derivatives (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine, acac = acetylacetonate, and pap = 2-phenylazopyridine). The crystal structures established that (i) O,O-/O,O- donating five-membered bis-bidentate and O-,O- donating seven-membered bidentate chelating modes of deprotonated L2- in rac (ΔΔ/ΛΛ) diastereomeric [1](ClO4)2, 2 and 3, respectively. (ii) The L2- bridging unit in [1](ClO4)2, 2 and 3 underwent twisting its two naphthoquinone rings with respect to the ring connecting C-C bond by 73.01°, 62.15° and 59.12°, respectively. (iii) Intermolecular π-π interactions (∼3.5 Å) between the neighbouring molecules. The paramagnetic complex 2 (S = 1) with two non-interacting Ru(III) (S = 1/2) ions exhibited weak antiferromagnetic coupling only at very low temperatures. In agreement with the magnetic results, 2 displayed typical RuIII-based anisotropic EPR in CH3CN (<g>/Δg: 2.314/0.564) but without any forbidden g1/2 signal at 120 K. The complexes exhibited multiple redox processes in CH3CN in the experimental potential window of ± 2.0 V versus SCE. The analysis of the redox steps via a combined experimental and theoretical (DFT/TD-DFT) approach revealed the involvement of L2- to varying extents in both the oxidative and reductive processes as a consequence of its bidirectional redox non-innocent feature. The mixing of the frontier orbitals of the metal ion and L2- due to their closeness in energy indeed led to the resonating electronic form in certain redox states instead of any precise electronic structural state.

Abstract
Four types of tris-chelate ruthenium complexes bearing acetylacetonato (acac) and tropolonato (trop) ligands were synthesized and optically resolved into Δ and Λ isomers: [Ru(acac)3] (Ru-0), [Ru(acac)2(trop)] (Ru-1), [Ru(acac)(trop)2] (Ru-2), and [Ru(trop)3] (Ru-3). Chiral HPLC chromatograms, electronic circular dichroism (ECD), and vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) of the four ruthenium complexes were systematically investigated. As a result, the absolute configurations of the newly prepared enantiomeric complexes Ru-2 and Ru-3 were determined. For the case of Ru-2, its absolute configuration was also confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The ECD changes upon chemical oxidation were further investigated for the four complexes. An ECD change in enantiomeric Ru-1 was observed upon oxidation, but the oxidized species soon returned to the neutral state within a few minutes. Enantiomers of Ru-3 also showed explicit ECD changes upon oxidation. Further, the lifetime of the oxidized state was the longest among the four investigated complexes, whereas they racemized in solution at room temperature. In contrast, the enantiomers of heteroleptic complexes (Ru-1 and Ru-2) concurrently exhibited ECD changes, relatively long lifetime of the oxidized state, and nil or quite slow racemization behavior. The coexistence of acac and trop ligands was key to making the competing factors compatible in the resultant ruthenium complexes.

Abstract
Careful optimization of the reaction conditions provided access to the particularly small tetraruthenium macrocycle 2Ru2Ph-Croc, which is composed out of two redox-active divinylphenylene-bridged diruthenium entities {Ru}-1,4-CH=CH-C6H4-CH=CH-{Ru} (Ru2Ph; {Ru} = Ru(CO)Cl(PiPr3)2) and two likewise redox-active and potentially non-innocent croconate linkers. According to single X-ray diffraction analysis, the central cavity of 2Ru2Ph-Croc is shielded by the bulky PiPr3 ligands, which come into close contact. Cyclic voltammetry revealed two pairs of split anodic waves in the weakly ion pairing CH2Cl2/NBu4BArF24 (BArF24 = [B{C6H3(CF3)2-3,5}4]− electrolyte, while the third and fourth waves fall together in CH2Cl2/NBu4PF6. The various oxidized forms were electrogenerated and scrutinized by IR and UV/Vis/NIR spectroscopy. This allowed us to assign the individual oxidations to the metal-organic Ru2Ph entities within 2Ru2Ph-Croc, while the croconate ligands remain largely uninvolved. The lack of specific NIR bands that could be assigned to intervalence charge transfer (IVCT) in the mono- and trications indicates that these mixed-valent species are strictly charge-localized. 2Ru2Ph-Croc is hence an exemplary case, where stepwise IR band shifts and quite sizable redox splittings between consecutive one-electron oxidations would, on first sight, point to electronic coupling, but are exclusively due to electrostatic and inductive effects. This makes 2Ru2Ph-Croc a true “pretender”.

Abstract
In this study, the intramolecular electronic communication between π-conjugated moieties bridged by the tris-chelate [Ru(trop)3] (trop = tropolonate) framework has been investigated and compared with [Ru(acac)3] (acac = acetylacetonate) derivatives. Two types of π-conjugated groups, -C2SiMe3 and -C2Ph, which were each introduced at the 5-position of tropolonate, were found to behave almost independently in the resultant ruthenium complexes. In contrast, the cyclic voltammetry study of [Ru(trop)3] derivatives showed a clear decrease in ΔE, the difference in the potentials of the two redox couples, with an increase in the number of π-conjugated groups introduced into the [Ru(trop)3] framework. The lower ΔE values observed in [Ru(trop)3] derivatives compared to those in [Ru(acac)3] derivatives illustrated the non-innocent behavior of the tropolonate ligand, i.e., the mixing between the metal- and ligand-based frontier orbitals. This orbital mixing was exemplified in the oxidized [Ru(trop)3] derivatives, which showed a broad near-infrared (NIR) absorption. The increase in the red shift of the NIR absorption with the increasing number of terminal groups indicated intramolecular electronic communication between the terminal π-conjugated moieties. In contrast, no NIR absorption was observed upon oxidation of [Ru(acac)3] derivatives with -C2Ph groups. The lifetimes of the in situ formed [Ru(trop)3]+ and [Ru(acac)3]+ in acetonitrile solution were found to be several hours and minutes, respectively. Density functional theory calculations for [Ru(trop)3] and [Ru(acac)3] with terminal -C2Ph groups demonstrated that the spin densities in their mono-oxidized states were evenly distributed over the entire molecular framework and localized mainly on one ligand, respectively. These results confirmed that the mono-oxidized [Ru(trop)3]+ framework can behave as a hub and induce moderate intramolecular electronic communication between terminal π-conjugated groups.

Abstract
The synthesis of 1-Fc- (3), 1-Br-6-Fc- (5 a), 2-Br-7-Fc- (7 a), 1,6-Fc2 - (5 b), 2,7-Fc2 -pyrene (7 b), 3,6-Fc2 -9,10-phenanthrenedione (10), and 3,6-Fc2 -9,10-dimethoxyphenanthrene (12; Fc=Fe(η5 -C5 H4 )(η5 -C5 H5 )) is discussed. Of these compounds, 10 and 12 form 1D or 2D coordination polymers in the solid state. (Spectro)Electrochemical studies confirmed reversible Fc/Fc+ redox events between -130 and 160 mV. 1,6- and 2,7-Substitution in 5 a (E°'=-130 mV) and 7 a (E°'=50 mV) influences the redox potentials, whereas the ones of 5 b and 7 b (E°'=20 mV) are independent. Compounds 5 b, 7 b, 10, and 12 show single Fc oxidation processes with redox splittings between 70 and 100 mV. UV/Vis/NIR spectroelectrochemistry confirmed a weak electron transfer between FeII /FeIII in mixed-valent [5 b]+ and [12]+ . DFT calculations showed that 5 b non-covalently interacts with the single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) sidewalls as proven by, for example, disentangling experiments. In addition, CV studies of the as-obtained dispersions confirmed exohedral attachment of 5 b at the SWCNTs.

Abstract
The new dinucleating redox-active ligand (LH4 ), bearing two redox-active NNO-binding pockets linked by a 1,2,3-triazole unit, is synthetically readily accessible. Coordination to two equivalents of PdII resulted in the formation of paramagnetic (S=1/2 ) dinuclear Pd complexes with a κ2 -N,N'-bridging triazole and a single bridging chlorido or azido ligand. A combined spectroscopic, spectroelectrochemical, and computational study confirmed Robin-Day Class II mixed-valence within the redox-active ligand, with little influence of the secondary bridging anionic ligand. Intervalence charge transfer was observed between the two ligand binding pockets. Selective one-electron oxidation allowed for isolation of the corresponding cationic ligand-based diradical species. SQUID (super-conducting quantum interference device) measurements of these compounds revealed weak anti-ferromagnetic spin coupling between the two ligand-centered radicals and an overall singlet ground state in the solid state, which is supported by DFT calculations. The rigid and conjugated dinucleating redox-active ligand framework thus allows for efficient electronic communication between the two binding pockets.

Abstract
Three chemical reactions of two 2-aminothioethers and 2-aminothiophenol with CpRu(II)Cl(PPh3)2 (Cp(-) = cyclopentadienyl anion), under identical reaction conditions, are reported. While 2-(methylthio)aniline, H2L(1) and an analogous substrate, 2-(phenylthio)aniline yielded dicationic dinuclear complexes [(PPh3)CpRu(II)(L(3/)L(4))Ru(II)Cp(PPh3)]Cl2 (where L(3) = (4E)-4-(4-imino-3-(methylthio)cyclohexa-2,5-dienylidene)-2-(methylthio)cyclohexa-2,5-dienimine ([1a]Cl2) and L(4) = (4E)-4-(4-imino-3-(phenylthio)cyclohexa-2,5-dienylidene)-2-(phenylthio)cyclohexa-2,5-dienimine ([1b]Cl2)), the reaction with 2-aminothiophenol (H2L(2)) produced a mononuclear complex [(PPh3)CpRu(II)(L(2))]Cl (where L(2) = 6-iminocyclohexa-2,4-dienethione) ([2]Cl). All these complexes are obtained in high yields (65%-75%). Formations of the products from the above reactions involve a similar level of oxidation of the respective substrate, although their courses are completely different. A comparison between the above two chemical transformations are scrutinized thoroughly. Characterizations of these complexes were made using a host of physical methods: X-ray crystallography, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), cyclic voltammetry, ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis), electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy, and density functional theory (DFT). The complexes [1a]Cl2 and [1b]Cl2 showed intense metal-to-ligand charge transfer transition in the long wavelength region of the spectrum, at 860 and 895 nm, respectively, and displayed two reversible electron transfer (ET) processes at [1a](2+): -0.28 and -0.52 V; [1b](2+): -0.13 and -0.47 V, along with an irreversible ET process at 0.76 and 0.54 V, respectively. The ET processes at negative potentials are due to successive reductions of the bridging ligand, which are characterized by EPR and UV-vis spectroscopy. The one-electron reduced compound, [1a](+), showed a intraligand charge transfer transition (ILCT) at 1530 nm. The complex [2](+) showed a reversible ET process at -0.36 V and two irreversible ET processes at -1.04 and 1.18 V, respectively. DFT calculations were used to support the spectral and redox properties of the complexes and also to throw light on the difference of redox behavior between thioether and thiophenol substrates.

Abstract
The potential of a new anionic octahedral metal complex [Ru(III)(acac)2(pz)2](-) ((-)) (pzH = pyrazole) as a ligand with a scorpionate coordination behaviour like tris(pyrazolyl)borate (tp) and reversible redox activity is presented. Trinuclear metal complexes, [Ru(III)2Zn(II)(acac)4(pz)4] () and [Ru(II)Ru(III)2(acac)4(pz)4] (), were each synthesized by the reaction of ZnCl2 or Ru3(CO)12 with [Ru(III)(acac)2(pz)(pzH)] (H) that is in situ deprotonated and acts as a precursor of (-). Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies clarified that (-) acts as a scorpionate ligand; two (-) units in and one unit in function as bidentate ligands with two pyrazolates as pincers, while another (-) unit in functions as a tridentate ligand with one oxygen atom as a tail in addition to the two pyrazolate pincers. Moreover, and showed reversible multi-stage redox behaviours based on the Ru(II)/Ru(III) and Ru(III)/Ru(IV) couples of the (-) units in the cyclic voltammetry (CV) measurements. Based on the X-ray, IR, and CV measurements and the comparison with other Ru(ii) complexes with tp derivatives, the (-) unit was found to act as a redox-active scorpionate with electron withdrawing properties compared to the tp.

Abstract
The compounds [(acac)2Ru(III)(μ-H2L(2-))Ru(III)(acac)2] (rac, 1, and meso, 1') and [(bpy)2Ru(II)(μ-H2L(•-))Ru(II)(bpy)2](ClO4)3 (meso, [2](ClO4)3) have been structurally, magnetically, spectroelectrochemically, and computationally characterized (acac(-) = acetylacetonate, bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine, and H4L = 1,4-diamino-9,10-anthraquinone). The N,O;N',O'-coordinated μ-H2L(n-) forms two β-ketiminato-type chelate rings, and 1 or 1' are connected via NH···O hydrogen bridges in the crystals. 1 exhibits a complex magnetic behavior, while [2](ClO4)3 is a radical species with mixed ligand/metal-based spin. The combination of redox noninnocent bridge (H2L(0) → → → →H2L(4-)) and {(acac)2Ru(II)} → →{(acac)2Ru(IV)} or {(bpy)2Ru(II)} → {(bpy)2Ru(III)} in 1/1' or 2 generates alternatives regarding the oxidation state formulations for the accessible redox states (1(n) and 2(n)), which have been assessed by UV-vis-NIR, EPR, and DFT/TD-DFT calculations. The experimental and theoretical studies suggest variable mixing of the frontier orbitals of the metals and the bridge, leading to the following most appropriate oxidation state combinations: [(acac)2Ru(III)(μ-H2L(•-))Ru(III)(acac)2](+) (1(+)) → [(acac)2Ru(III)(μ-H2L(2-))Ru(III)(acac)2] (1) → [(acac)2Ru(III)(μ-H2L(•3-))Ru(III)(acac)2](-)/[(acac)2Ru(III)(μ-H2L(2-))Ru(II)(acac)2](-) (1(-)) → [(acac)2Ru(III)(μ-H2L(4-))Ru(III)(acac)2](2-)/[(acac)2Ru(II)(μ-H2L(2-))Ru(II)(acac)2](2-) (1(2-)) and [(bpy)2Ru(III)(μ-H2L(•-))Ru(II)(bpy)2](4+) (2(4+)) → [(bpy)2Ru(II)(μ-H2L(•-))Ru(II)(bpy)2](3+)/[(bpy)2Ru(II)(μ-H2L(2-))Ru(III)(bpy)2](3+) (2(3+)) → [(bpy)2Ru(II)(μ-H2L(2-))Ru(II)(bpy)2](2+) (2(2+)). The favoring of Ru(III) by σ-donating acac(-) and of Ru(II) by the π-accepting bpy coligands shifts the conceivable valence alternatives accordingly. Similarly, the introduction of the NH donor function in H2L(n) as compared to O causes a cathodic shift of redox potentials with corresponding consequences for the valence structure.

Abstract
The electronic structures of (LX)2Ru(Vd)Ru(LX)2 complexes (Vd = 1,5-diisopropyl-3-(4,6-dimethyl-2-pyrimidinyl)-6-oxoverdazyl radical; LX = acac (acetylacetonate) or hfac (hexafluoroacetylacetonate)) in multiple charge states have been investigated experimentally and computationally. The main focus was to probe the consequences of the interplay between the ruthenium ions and the redox-active verdazyl ligand for possible mixed-valent behavior. Cyclic voltammetry studies reveal one reversible reduction and one reversible oxidation process for both complexes; in addition the acac-based derivative possesses a second reversible oxidation. Analysis of a collection of experimental (X-ray structures, EPR, electronic spectra) and computational (TD-DFT (PCM)) data reveal that the ruthenium ancillary ligands (acac vs hfac) have dramatic consequences for the electronic structures of the complexes in all charge states studied. In the hfac series, the neutral complex is best regarded as a binuclear Ru(II) species bridged by a neutral radical ligand. Reduction to give the anionic complex takes place on the verdazyl ligand, whereas oxidation to the cation (a closed shell species) is shared between Vd and ruthenium. For the acac-based complexes, the neutral species is most accurately represented as a Ru(II)/Ru(III) mixed valent complex containing a bridging verdazyl anion, though some bis(Ru(II))-neutral radical character remains. The monocation complex contains a significant contribution from a "broken symmetry" singlet diradical structure, best represented as a bis-Ru(III) system with an anionic ligand, with significant spin coupling of the two Ru(III) centers via the Vd(-1) ligand (calculated J = -218 cm(-1)). The dication, a spin doublet, consists of two Ru(III) ions linked (and antiferromagnetically coupled) to the neutral radical ligand. Computed net σ- and π-back-donation, spin densities, and orbital populations are provided. Time dependent DFT is used to predict the optical spectra and assign experimental data.

Abstract
New compounds [Ru(pap)(2)(L)](ClO(4)), [Ru(pap)(L)(2)], and [Ru(acac)(2)(L)] (pap = 2-phenylazopyridine, L(-) = 9-oxidophenalenone, acac(-) = 2,4-pentanedionate) have been prepared and studied regarding their electron-transfer behavior, both experimentally and by using DFT calculations. [Ru(pap)(2)(L)](ClO(4)) and [Ru(acac)(2)(L)] were characterized by crystal-structure analysis. Spectroelectrochemistry (EPR, UV/Vis/NIR), in conjunction with cyclic voltammetry, showed a wide range of about 2 V for the potential of the Ru(III/II) couple, which was in agreement with the very different characteristics of the strongly π-accepting pap ligand and the σ-donating acac(-) ligand. At the rather high potential of +1.35 V versus SCE, the oxidation of L(-) into L(⋅) could be deduced from the near-IR absorption of [Ru(III)(pap)(L(⋅))(L(-))](2+). Other intense long-wavelength transitions, including LMCT (L(-) → Ru(III)) and LL/CT (pap(⋅-) → L(-)) processes, were confirmed by TD-DFT results. DFT calculations and EPR data for the paramagnetic intermediates allowed us to assess the spin densities, which revealed two cases with considerable contributions from L-radical-involving forms, that is, [Ru(III)(pap(0))(2)(L(-))](2+) ↔ [Ru(II)(pap(0))(2)(L(⋅))](2+) and [Ru(III)(pap(0))(L(-))(2)](+) ↔ [Ru(II)(pap(0))(L(⋅))(L(-))](+). Calculations of electrogenerated complex [Ru(II)(pap(⋅-))(pap(0))(L(-))] displayed considerable negative spin density (-0.188) at the bridging metal.

Abstract
The redox systems [Ru(L)(bpy)(2)](k), [Ru(L)(2)(bpy)](m), and [Ru(L)(3)](n) containing the potentially redox-active ligand 9-oxidophenalenone = L(-) were investigated by spectroelectrochemistry (UV-vis-near-IR and electron paramagnetic resonance) in conjunction with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Compounds [Ru(L(-))(bpy)(2)]ClO(4) ([1]ClO(4)) and [Ru(L(-))(2)(bpy)]ClO(4) ([2]ClO(4)) were structurally characterized. In addition to establishing electron-transfer processes involving the Ru(II)/Ru(III)/Ru(IV) and bpy(0)/bpy(•-) couples, evidence for the noninnocent behavior of L(-) was obtained from [Ru(IV)(L(•))(L(-))(bpy)](3+), which exhibits strong near-IR absorption due to ligand-to-ligand charge transfer. In contrast, the lability of the electrogenerated anion [Ru(L)(2)(bpy)](-) is attributed to a resonance situation [Ru(II)(L(•2-))(L(-))(bpy)](-)/[Ru(II)(L(-))(2) (bpy(•-))](-), as suggested by DFT calculations.
