Abstract
Pentalenes are formally eight-π-electron antiaromatic, but π-expanded pentalenes can display varying levels of paratropicity depending on the choice of annelated (hetero)arenes and the geometry of π-expansion (i.e., linear vs bent topologies) around the [4n] core. Here, we explain the effects of annelation on the paratropicity of π-expanded pentalenes by relating the electronic structure of pentalenes to a pair of conjoined pentafulvenes.

Abstract
Tricoordinate boron-incorporated π-conjugated systems are widely investigated as optoelectronic materials because of their unique p-π* orbital interactions and high Lewis acidity. Among them, thiophene-fused diborinines are characterized by moderate antiaromaticity and extended conjugation. In this work, we have developed two new dithienodiborinines with C2h and C2v symmetries, which exhibited completely different optical properties. The thiophene-fused diborinines synthesized in this study showed excellent fluorescence properties both in solution and in the solid state, with quantum yields of up to 95%. The high antiaromaticity enhanced the Lewis acidity of the boron centers, as proven by the large association constants with fluoride ion estimated from titration experiments. The high Lewis acidity and the superior luminescence property have enabled their application as fluorescent sensor materials for the detection of ammonia vapor.

Abstract
Despite their inherent instability, 4n π systems have recently received significant attention due to their unique optical and electronic properties. In dibenzopentalene (DBP), benzanellation stabilizes the highly antiaromatic pentalene core, without compromising its amphoteric redox behavior or small HOMO-LUMO energy gap. However, incorporating such molecules in organic devices as discrete small molecules or amorphous polymers can limit the performance (e.g., due to solubility in the battery electrolyte solution or low internal surface area). Covalent organic frameworks (COFs), on the contrary, are highly ordered, porous, and crystalline materials that can provide a platform to align molecules with specific properties in a well-defined, ordered environment. We synthesized the first antiaromatic framework materials and obtained a series of three highly crystalline and porous COFs based on DBP. Potential applications of such antiaromatic bulk materials were explored: COF films show a conductivity of 4 × 10-8 S cm-1 upon doping and exhibit photoconductivity upon irradiation with visible light. Application as positive electrode materials in Li-organic batteries demonstrates a significant enhancement of performance when the antiaromaticity of the DBP unit in the COF is exploited in its redox activity with a discharge capacity of 26 mA h g-1 at a potential of 3.9 V vs. Li/Li+. This work showcases antiaromaticity as a new design principle for functional framework materials.

Abstract
A novel class of stable monoareno-pentalenes is introduced that have an olefinic proton on each five-membered ring of the pentalene subunit. Their synthesis was accomplished via a regioselective carbopalladation cascade reaction between ortho-arylacetyleno gem-dibromoolefins and TIPS-acetylene. These molecules could be experimental probes of magnetic (anti)aromaticity effects.

Abstract
Since the first isolation of 1,3,5,7-tetra-tert-butyl-s-indacene in 1986, core-expanded s- and as-indacenes have attracted intensive interest. However, there is no reported synthesis of such type of molecules due to their high reactivity for over 30 years. Herein, we report the successful synthesis of two relatively stable, core-expanded indacene isomers, dicyclopenta[b,g]-naphthalene (5) and dicyclopenta[a,f]naphthalene (6). X-ray crystallographic analyses reveal that the backbone of 5 adopts a bond-delocalized structure, while that of 6 exhibits a bond-localized character. Variable-temperature 1H NMR/ESR measurements, electronic absorption spectra, and theoretical calculations confirm that both molecules are globally antiaromatic and have an open-shell singlet ground state. However, 6 shows stronger antiaromaticity, a larger diradical character (y0 = 48%), and a smaller singlet-triplet energy gap (ΔES-T = -0.99 kcal mol-1) compared to 5 (y0 = 30%, ΔES-T = -6.88 kcal mol-1), which can be explained by their different quinoidal structures.

Abstract
Conjugated nanohoops allow to investigate the effect of radial conjugation and bending on the involved π-systems. They can possess unexpected optoelectronic properties and their radially oriented π-system makes them attractive for host-guest chemistry. Bending the π-subsystems can lead to chiral hoops. Herein, we report the stereoselective synthesis of two enantiomers of chiral conjugated nanohoops by incorporating dibenzo[a,e]pentalenes (DBPs), which are generated in the last synthetic step from enantiomerically pure diketone precursors. Owing to its bent shape, this diketone unit was used as the only bent precursor and novel "corner unit" in the synthesis of the hoops. The [6]DBP[4]Ph-hoops contain six antiaromatic DBP units and four bridging phenylene groups. The small HOMO-LUMO gap and ambipolar electrochemical character of the DBP units is reflected in the optoelectronic properties of the hoop. Electronic circular dichroism spectra and MD simulations showed that the chiral hoop did not racemize even when heated to 110 °C. Due to its large diameter, it was able to accommodate two C60 molecules, as binding studies indicate.

Abstract
The first dibenzo[a,e]disilapentalene with two Si═C moieties in the heteropentalene core has been prepared. Its solid-state structure and density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that the Si═C bonds are involved in an expanded π-conjugated system. The Si═C bonds show a distinguished reactivity toward CO2, depending on the reaction conditions. While one product results from fixation of two CO2 molecules across one Si═C bond, two different products could be isolated from the reaction of three CO2 molecules with both Si═C bonds. The mechanism has been uncovered by DFT calculations.

Abstract
Although polycyclic conjugated hydrocarbons (PCHs) and their analogues have gained great progress in the fields of organic photoelectronic materials, the in-depth study on present PCHs is still limited to hexacene or below because longer PCHs are insoluble, unstable, and tediously synthesized. Very recently, various strategies including on-surface synthesis are developed to address these issues and many higher novel PCHs are constructed. Therefore, it is necessary to review these advances. Here, the recent synthetic approach, basic physicochemical properties, single-crystal packing behaviors, and potential applications of the linearly fused PCHs (higher than hexacene), including acenes or π-extended acenes with fused six-membered benzenoid rings and other four-membered, five-membered or even seven-membered and eight-membered fused compounds, are summarized.

Abstract

According
to the currently accepted structure–property relationships,
aceno-pentalenes with an angular shape (fused to the 1,2-bond of the
acene) exhibit higher antiaromaticity than those with a linear shape
(fused to the 2,3-bond of the acene). To explore and expand the current
view, we designed and synthesized molecules where two isomeric, yet,
different, 8π antiaromatic subunits, a benzocyclobutadiene (BCB)
and a pentalene, are combined into, respectively, an angular and a
linear topology via an unsaturated six-membered ring. The antiaromatic
character of the molecules is supported experimentally by 1H NMR, UV–vis, and cyclic voltammetry measurements and X-ray
crystallography. The experimental results are further confirmed by
theoretical studies including the calculation of several aromaticity
indices (NICS, ACID, HOMA, FLU, MCI). In the case of the angular molecule,
double bond-localization within the connecting six-membered ring resulted
in reduced antiaromaticity of both the BCB and pentalene subunits,
while the linear structure provided a competitive situation for the
two unequal [4n]π subunits. We found that in
the latter case the BCB unit alleviated its unfavorable antiaromaticity
more efficiently, leaving the pentalene with strong antiaromaticity.
Thus, a reversed structure–antiaromaticity relationship when
compared to aceno-pentalenes was achieved.

Abstract
Polycyclic conjugated hydrocarbons containing antiaromatic four-membered cyclobutadienoids (CDB) are of great fundamental and technical interest. However, their challenging synthesis has hampered the exploration and understanding of such systems. Reported herein is a modular and efficient synthesis of novel CBD-containing acene analogues, dinaphthobenzo[1,2:4,5]dicyclobutadiene (DNBDCs), with orthogonally tunable electronic properties and molecular packing. The design also features strong antiaromaticity of the CBD units, as revealed by nucleus-independent chemical shift and anisotropy of the induced current density calculations, as well as X-ray crystallography. Tuning the size of silyl substituents resulted in the most favorable "brick-layer" packing for triisobutylsilyl-DNBDC and a charge mobility of up to 0.52 cm2 V-1 s-1 in field-effect transistors.

Abstract
Fully π-conjugated polycyclic hydrocarbons with antiaromatic character have attracted research attention because of their unique properties such as narrow energy gaps, and thus should find application as optical and electronic materials. Although antiaromatic 16π-electron frameworks can be constructed by the incorporation of multiple seven-membered rings in a fused fashion to install methylenecycloheptatriene (heptafulvene) segments, the development of corresponding benzo[1,2:4,5]di[7]annulene (BDA)-containing π-conjugated systems remains challenging due to the difficulty of their molecular design and synthesis. In this study, we develop an unprecedented chemical structure of cycloheptatriene-bis-annelated indenofluorene, which possesses both BDA and indenofluorene frameworks in a fused fashion. Physical measurements and X-ray analyses, along with theoretical calculations, indicated that antiaromaticity appeared in the BDA framework. By using the conjugated polycyclic hydrocarbon possessing both seven-membered and five-membered rings, this study provides fundamental insight into the strong antiaromatic nature of heptafulvene-based BDA framework.

Abstract
In cyclophanes, an aromatic moiety is incorporated into a (strained) cyclic structure. Of particular interest as model systems for bent carbon nanostructures are those containing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Dibenzo[a,e]pentalene (DBP) is a non-alternant polycyclic hydrocarbon with small band gap and tunable optoelectronic properties. However, changing these properties by bending of the DBP structure has yet to be investigated. Herein, we report the synthesis, optoelectronic, and structural properties of (2,7)dibenzo[a,e]pentalenophanes with four different bridge sizes and bending angles of the DBP unit, accompanied by (TD)DFT calculations. The last, strain-inducing dehydration reaction was accomplished by using Burgess' reagent. The HOMO and LUMO levels and the magnetic shielding of protons pointing inside the cyclophane cavity grew stepwise with increasing ring strain. Single-crystal X-ray structures of the smallest three derivatives revealed a near semi-circle and a bend angle of the DBP unit of almost 88° for the smallest derivative. We demonstrated the synthetic versatility of our approach by varying the substituents at the DBP unit, allowing for further tuning of optoelectronic properties. The synthetic strategy presented herein may pave the way for the synthesis of conjugated DBP nanorings.

Abstract
By employing gold catalysis, starting from dialkynylated acenes a series of novel un-symmetrical aceno-annulated dibenzopentalenes has been prepared. The achieved yields range from 62-68 %. The fused systems contain naphthalene, anthracene, tetracene, and pentacene units. All new compounds are soluble and stable under standard conditions. The optical properties of the systems are dominated by the dibenzopentalene core for the smaller representatives, while for the anthracene-pentacene-based aceno-benzopentalenes the optical properties of the acene group dominates. Preliminary morphology tests on thin films showed a reverse trend between crystal size and molecule size.

Abstract
Ambipolar organic semiconductors are of high interest for organic field-effect transistors. For n-type conduction, low LUMO energies are required. Dibenzo[a,e]pentalenes (DBPs) are promising compounds; however, few derivatives exist with energetically low-lying LUMO levels. Here, we present DBP derivatives with LUMO energies down to -3.73 eV and small bandgaps down to 1.63 eV determined through cyclic voltammetry, UV/vis absorption spectroscopy, and TDDFT calculations. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis revealed a 1D π-stacking mode. The addition of arylalkynyl substituents at the five-membered rings in a facile and versatile synthetic route allowed for tuning of the band gaps and LUMO energies. The synthetic route can easily be modified to access a variety of DBP derivatives. The LUMO energies of the DBP derivatives presented herein make them attractive for an application in n-type or ambipolar field-effect transistors.

Abstract
Polycyclic conjugated hydrocarbons containing four-membered cyclobutadienoids (CBDs) are of great fundamental and technical interest due to the antiaromaticity brought by CBD circuits. However, their synthesis has been challenging, hampering the exploration and understanding of such systems. We report efficient synthesis of a series of unprecedented [3]naphthylene regioisomers in high yields, where three naphthalenoids are fused through two CBDs in linear, angular, and bent regioconnectivity. Their synthesis was enabled by exclusively regioselective catalytic arene-norbornene annulation (CANAL) between dibromonaphthalenes and benzooxanorbornadienes, followed by aromatization. [3]Naphthylene regioisomers exhibited distinct optoelectronic properties. Nucleus-independent chemical shift calculations, NMR spectroscopy, and X-ray crystallography revealed the strong effect of the fusion pattern on the local antiaromaticity and aromaticity in fused CBDs and naphthalenoids, respectively. Thus, our synthetic strategy allows facile access to extended CBD-fused π-systems with tunable local antiaromaticity and aromaticity.

Abstract
Conjugated 1,5-diynes bearing two aromatic units at the alkyne termini were converted in the presence of a gold catalyst. Under mild conditions, aryl-substituted dibenzopentalenes were generated. Calculations predict that aurated vinyl cations are key intermediates of the reaction. A bidirectional approach provided selective access to the angular annulated product in high yield, which was explained by calculations.

Abstract
Pentalenes represent highly reactive Hückel antiaromatics with 8π electrons. Usually, pentalenes are stabilized by incorporation of two benzene rings in a fused fashion. In dibenzo[a,e]pentalenes, however, the high aromaticity of the fused benzene rings compromises the inherent antiaromaticity of the pentalene core. Herein, we disclose that this forfeited antiaromaticity can be restored by fusing four additional aromatic rings onto the peripheral positions of dibenzo[a,e]pentalenes. Such polycyclic pentalenes were prepared by successive transannular cyclizations via in situ-generated tetrakisdehydro[16]annulenes. The thus obtained compounds showed intriguing properties, for example, characteristic absorptions in the visible-to-near-infrared (NIR) region and low reduction potentials. These results hence afford a design principle to produce highly antiaromatic yet stable pentalenes. The antiaromaticity of the pentalene core can be widely tuned via the degree of aromaticity of the peripherally fused rings.

Abstract
A new method based on a palladium-catalyzed tandem reaction for the fast construction of a dianthraceno[a,e]pentalene (DAP) framework is developed, which gave a series of dianthraceno[a,e]pentalenes with good functional group tolerance, and it should be highlighted that five C–C bonds were formed in one reaction.

Abstract
A rhodium-catalysed stitching reaction between 2-(silylethynyl)arylboronates and 2-(silylethynyl)aryl bromides has been developed for the synthesis of unsymmetric dibenzo[a,e]pentalenes. The introduction of appropriately sized silyl groups on the starting substrates led to a high crossover selectivity without using an excess amount of either substrate. The present stitching reaction could produce a variety of unsymmetric dibenzo[a,e]pentalene derivatives, including those with electronically different substituents on the fused benzene rings as well as heteroarene fused compounds. Desilylative halogenation was also demonstrated to synthesise the corresponding halogenated dibenzo[a,e]pentalenes, which can be used as building blocks for further chemical transformations.

Abstract
We demonstrate the preparation of diacenaphthopentalene derivatives via a palladium-catalyzed dimerization of 1-iodo-2-arylethynyl-acenaphthylenes. The resulting 7,14-diarylpentaleno[1,2-a:4,5a']diacenaphthylenes, which contain four linearly fused five-membered rings, are benchtop stable and behave as hole-transporting or ambipolar semiconductors in organic field effect transistors. The X-ray crystal structure shows the important role of the fused naphthalene unit that enforces a formal pentalene subunit at the central five-membered rings and [5]-radialene-like structures at the proximal five-membered rings. Nucleus-independent chemical shift (NICS) calculations show the internal pentalene rings are intermediate in antiaromaticity character between known pentalene and dibenzopentalenes derivatives. The diacenaphthopentalene derivatives give high optical gap materials owing to a forbidden HOMO to LUMO transition, yet have narrow electrochemical gaps and are reduced at small negative potentials giving LUMO energy levels of -3.57 to -3.74 eV.

Abstract
Benzo- and naphthopentalene derivatives were synthesized, and the effects of structural variations on their antiaromaticity and optoelectronic and electrochemical properties were examined experimentally and theoretically in detail. The results unveiled that with increasing the bond order of the carbon-carbon bond ([5,6] junction) shared by the pentalene and aromatic moieties, the 8π antiaromatic character of pentalene is enhanced and the HOMO-LUMO gap is decreased, which accompanies both the elevation of the HOMO level and the lowering of the LUMO level. The ethynylene units between the pentalene skeleton and the phenyl groups proved to extend π-conjugation sufficiently.

Abstract
A novel ladder-type pyrrole-fused dibenzo[a,e]pentalene, in which two benzo[a,e]pentalene units are held coplanar by a nitrogen bridge, is synthesized via double intermolecular Pd-catalyzed cascade crossover annulations. The introduction of a nitrogen bridge not only has a substantial influence on the optoelectronic properties but also improves the processability and stability.
