Abstract
Abstract:
In this review, we report different methods and strategies to synthesize flexible and rigid dendronized porphyrins. We will focus on porphyrin dendrimers that have been reported in the last 10 years. Particularly, in our research group, we have designed and synthesized different series of dendronized porphyrins (free base and metallated) with pyrene units at the periphery and Fréchet-type dendritic arms. The Lindsey methodology has allowed the synthesis of meso-substituted porphyrins with various substitution patterns, such as symmetric, dissymmetric, or unsymmetric. Porphyrin dendrimers have been prepared by different synthetic methodologies; one of the most reported being the convergent method, where the dendrons are first prepared and further linked to a meso-substituted functionalized porphyrin unit, which will constitute the core of the dendrimer. Another interesting synthetic approach is the use of a reactive dendron bearing a terminal aldehyde functional group to form the final porphyrin core. In this way, a two-armed dendronized dissymmetric porphyrin core can be prepared from a dendritic precursor and a dipyrromethene derivative. This strategy is very convenient to prepare low-generation dendritic porphyrins. The divergent approach is another well-known methodology for porphyrin dendrimer synthesis, mostly used for the obtainment of high-generation dendrimers. Click chemistry reaction has been advantageous for the development of more complex porphyrin dendritic structures. This reaction presents important advantages, such as high yields and mild reaction conditions which permit the assembly of different multiporphyrin dendritic structures. In the constructs presented in this review, the emission of the porphyrin moiety has been observed, leading to potential applications in artificial photosynthesis, sensing, nanomedicine, and biological sciences.

Abstract
Here, we present a novel butadiyne-linked HBC-ethynyl-porphyrin dimer, which exhibits in the ground state strong absorption cross sections throughout the UV and visible ranges of the solar spectrum. In short, a unidirectional flow of excited state energy from the HBC termini to the (metallo)porphyrin focal points enables concentrating light at the latter. Control over excitonic interactions within, for example, the electron-donating porphyrin dimers was realized by complexation of bidentate ligands to set up panchromatic absorption that extends all the way into the near-infrared range. The bidentate binding motif was then exploited to create a supramolecular electron donor-acceptor assembly based on a HBC-ethynyl-porphyrin dimer and an electron accepting bis(aminoalkyl)-substituted fullerene. Of great relevance is the fact that charge separation from the photoexcited HBC-ethynyl-porphyrin dimer to the bis(aminoalkyl)-substituted fullerene is activated not only upon photoexciting the HBCs in the UV as well as the (metallo)porphyrins in the visible but also in the NIR. Implicit is the synergetic interplay of energy and charge transfer in a photosynthetic mimicking manner. The dimer and bis-HBC-ethynyl-porphyrin monomers, which serve as references, were probed by means of steady-state as well as time-resolved optical spectroscopies, including global target analyses of the time-resolved transient absorption data.

Abstract
Two bis-tetraphenylporphyrin tweezers-like conjugates bearing different linkers have been characterized by means of electrochemical and photophysical methods. The thrust of this work was the complexation of these bis-porphyrins with C[Formula: see text] and metallic nitride endohedral fullerenes (MNEF) like Sc3N@C[Formula: see text] in organic and in aqueus media — studied by a combination of steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopies. In the context of charge separation evidence for the formation of the 1a[Formula: see text]-Sc3N@C[Formula: see text] and 1c[Formula: see text]-Sc3N@C[Formula: see text] charge separated states in organic and aqueous media, respectively, came from transient absorption spectroscopy. Multi-wavelength analyses afforded charge separated state lifetimes of around 400 ps.

Abstract
A newly designed electron donor-acceptor conjugate, namely Ce2@Ih-C80-H2P consisting of an endohedral dimetallofullerene Ce2@Ih-C80 and a free-base prophyrin (H2P), has been synthesized and systematically investigated. Basic characterization by means of NMR spectroscopy, steady-state absorption spectroscopy, and electrochemistry points to a folded configuration with sizeable interactions between Ce2@Ih-C80 and H2P. Complementary DFT optimization also results in the same conclusions. Time-resolved absorption spectroscopic investigations corroborate the formation of the (Ce2)˙(-)@Ih-C80-(H2P)˙(+) radical ion pair state in non-polar as well as polar media. Overall, the modus operandi is an ultrafast through-space electron transfer enabled by the folded configuration in the ground and excited state.

Abstract
Flexible, linked dendritic tetraphenylporphyrin (TPP)-fullerene hybrids were synthesized. They were designed to gain insight into and mimic the primary events in the natural photosynthetic reaction center. These multiporphyrin moieties are based on a light-harvesting concept. Moreover, they incorporate multiple redox components aligned along a redox gradient. Newkome-type dendrons were added to these TPP-fullerene hybrids. In principle they can mediate pH-dependent water solubility, which, however, could not be observed in this case. A protecting-group strategy using tert-butyldiphenylsilyl groups allows convergent synthesis of the dendritic compounds. The dendritic multiporphyrins were synthesized separately and can be used as individual building blocks. Atropisomerism was observed in the dendritic compounds, and single atropisomers could be assigned to the corresponding peaks of a characteristic pattern in the NMR spectra. Deprotection of the Newkome-type dendrons was shown to be feasible under mild conditions that leave the redox gradient intact.

Abstract
We demonstrate that the rates for long-range electron transfer can be controlled actively by tight anion binding to a rigid rod-like molecular bridge. Electron transfer from a triarylamine donor to a photoexcited Ru(bpy)32+ acceptor (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine) across a 2,5-diboryl-1,4-phenylene bridge occurs within less than 10 ns in CH2Cl2 at 22 °C. Fluoride anions bind with high affinity to the organoboron bridge due to strong Lewis base/Lewis acid interactions, and this alters the electronic structure of the bridge drastically. Consequently, a large tunneling barrier is imposed on photoinduced electron transfer from the triarylamine to the Ru(bpy)32+ complex and hence this process occurs more than two orders of magnitude more slowly, despite the fact that its driving force is essentially unaffected by fluoride addition. Electron transfer rates in proteins could potentially be regulated via a similar fundamental principle, because interactions between charged amino acid side chains and counter-ions can modulate electronic couplings between distant redox partners. In artificial donor-bridge-acceptor compounds, external stimuli have been employed frequently to control electron transfer rates, but the approach of exploiting strong Lewis acid/Lewis base interactions to regulate the tunneling barrier height imposed by a rigid rod-like molecular bridge is conceptually novel and broadly applicable, because it is largely independent of the donor and the acceptor, and because the effect is not based on a change of the driving-force for electron transfer. The principle demonstrated here can potentially be used to switch between conducting and insulating states of molecular wires between electrodes.

Abstract
The (3-hydroxy-2-naphthalenyl)methyl (NQMP) group represents an efficient photocage for fluorescein-based dyes. Thus, irradiation of the 6-NQMP ether of 2'-hydroxymethylfluorescein with low-intensity UVA light results in a 4-fold increase in emission intensity. Photoactivation of nonfluorescent NQMP-caged 3-allyloxyfluorescein produces a highly emissive fluorescein monoether. To facilitate conjugation of the caged dye to the substrate of interest via click chemistry, the allyloxy appendage was functionalized with an azide moiety.

Abstract
The photophysical properties of a supramolecular fullerene-porphyrin ensemble resulting from the self-assembly of a pyrrolidinofullerene-imidazole derivative (F1) with a multimetalloporphyrin array constructed around a hexasubstituted fullerene core (F(ZnP)12) have been investigated. The fullerene hexa-adduct core of the host system does not play any active role in the cascade of photoinduced events of the supramolecular ensemble, indeed no intercomponent photoinduced processes could be observed in host F(ZnP)12. In contrast, upon axial coordination with the monosubstituted fullerene guest F1, a quantitative quenching of the fluorescence signal of the metalloporphyrins was observed for the supramolecular complex [F(ZnP)12(F1)n] both in polar and nonpolar solvents. In toluene, the supramolecular ensemble exhibits a charge transfer emission centered around nm, suggesting the occurrence of intramolecular face-to-face interactions of F1 with neighboring metalloporphyrin moieties within the self-assembled photoactive array. This mechanism is supported by the fact that a one order of magnitude increase in the binding constant was observed for the supramolecular complex [F(ZnP)12(F1)n] when compared with a reference system lacking the pyrrolidinofullerene unit. In benzonitrile, a long-lived charge-separated state (τ=0.3 μs) has been detected for the supramolecular adduct.

Abstract
Porphyrin and fullerene donor-acceptor complexes have been extensively studied for their photo-induced charge transfer characteristics. We present the electronic structure of ground states and a few charge transfer excited states of four cofacial porphyrin-fullerene molecular constructs studied using density functional theory at the all-electron level using large polarized basis sets. The donors are base and Zn-tetraphenyl porphyrins and the acceptor molecules are C(60) and C(70). The complexes reported here are non-bonded with a face-to-face distance between the porphyrin and the fullerene of 2.7 to 3.0 Å. The energies of the low lying excited states including charge transfer states calculated using our recent excited state method are in good agreement with available experimental values. We find that replacing C(60) by C(70) in a given dyad may increase the lowest charge transfer excitation energy by about 0.27 eV. Variation of donor in these complexes has marginal effect on the lowest charge transfer excitation energy. The interfacial dipole moments and lowest charge transfer states are studied as a function of face-to-face distance.

Abstract
Early photochemistry flourished with sunlight plus the experimental and intellectual infrastructure provided by the chemistry of organic compounds. Through the pioneering work of Giacomo Ciamician and Emanuele Paternò, it was shown that photochemical reactions give rise to products that are not accessible by thermal methods, and the green chemistry potential of organic photoreactions was already recognized at the time. Over the last century, the photochemical behavior of many chromophores and functional groups has been well documented in solution. From those studies, it has become clear that applications in organic synthesis suffer from complications arising from competing decay pathways that are intrinsic to those excited states. While there are few opportunities to control the outcome of excited molecules in solution, the potential of organic photochemistry under the influence of highly ordered structures can be appreciated with examples from photobiology. Knowing that nature can synthesize triglycerides with light, CO(2), H(2)O and a few thermal reactions, organic photochemistry should have a great potential and aim high. With that in mind, after exploring the modes of action used by living organisms to take advantage of sunlight, one can identify an approach that relies on entropic factors that result from changes in the information content of the reactant. Analogies with information theory suggest a strategy that may be used to manage chemical information to modify the intrinsic properties of chromophores. Extrapolating from recent examples, it is suggested that an information-based approach to organic photochemistry may result in important advances not only in chemical synthesis and green chemistry, but also in many other applications.
