Abstract
Functionalization, namely the introduction of side groups onto the molecular scaffold of a helicene, may have either the purpose of modifying the electronic properties of the parent helicene, e.g., by adding electron-withdrawing or electron-donating groups, or the scope of providing the helicene with a “handle”, which can be reacted to bind the molecule to another molecule or to a solid structure, such as a carbon or metal surface, or again to allow for complexation of the helicene with metal ions. The possible approaches are two-fold: the synthesis of the helicene can be performed using starting materials that already contain a side group, or the side group can be introduced after the synthesis of the parent helicene. As azahelicenes are helicenes bearing one or more nitrogen atom(s) in the molecular framework, parent azahelicenes can be functionalized on carbon atoms by exploiting the presence of the electron-withdrawing nitrogen atom. Moreover, they can be transformed into quaternary salts, whose properties are quite different from those of the parent azahelicenes in terms of the solubility and electronic properties. This review aims to provide a survey of the different synthetic methods available to attain this fascinating class of compounds.

Abstract
New forms of molecular nanocarbon particularly looped polyarenes adopting various topologies contribute to the fundamental science and practical applications. Here we report the synthesis of an infinity-shaped polyarene, infinitene (1) (cyclo[c.c.c.c.c.c.e.e.e.e.e.e]dodecakisbenzene), comprising consecutively fused 12-benzene rings forming an enclosed loop with a strain energy of 60.2 kcal·mol-1. Infinitene (1) represents a topoisomer of still-hypothetical [12]circulene, and its scaffold can be formally visualized as the outcome of the "stitching" of two homochiral [6]helicene subunits by both their ends. The synthetic strategy encompasses transformation of a rationally designed dithiacyclophane to cyclophadiene through the Stevens rearrangement and pyrolysis of the corresponding S,S'-bis(oxide) followed by the photocyclization. The structure of 1 is a unique hybrid of helicene and circulene with a molecular formula of C48H24, which can be regarded as an isomer for kekulene, [6,6]carbon nanobelt ([6,6]CNB), and [12]cyclacene. Infinitene (1) is a bench-stable yellow solid with green fluorescence and soluble to common organic solvents. Its figure-eight molecular structure was unambiguously confirmed by X-ray crystallography. The scaffold of 1 is significantly compressed as manifested by a remarkably shortened distance (3.152-3.192 Å) between the centroids of two π-π stacked central benzene rings and the closest C···C distance of 2.920 Å. Fundamental photophysical properties of 1 were thoroughly elucidated by UV-vis absorption and fluorescence spectroscopic studies and density functional theory calculations. Its configurational stability enabled separation of the corresponding enantiomers (P,P) and (M,M) by a chiral HPLC. Circular dichroism (CD) and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) measurements revealed that 1 has moderate |gCD| and |gCPL| values.

Abstract
A series of chiral fluorescent helicene-BODIPY conjugates was prepared by the regioselective formylation of aza[4]helicene precursors and then an efficient one-pot two-step BODIPY synthesis (13 examples, 28-82%). Fused conjugates exhibit absorption and fluorescence properties (ΦF 30-45%) in the red visible domain, and a CPL signature could be measured at 605 nm (glum ±5 × 10-4). Photophysical and electronic properties were investigated and rationalized through first principles.

Abstract
A series of [Cu(POP)(N^S)][PF6] and [Cu(xantphos)(N^S)][PF6] compounds (POP = bis(2-(diphenylphosphino)phenyl)ether, xantphos = 4,5-bis(diphenylphosphino)-9,9-dimethylxanthene) in which the N^S ligand is a 2-(thiophen-2-yl)pyridine (1), 2-(thiophen-2-yl)-6-methylpyridine (2), 2-(5-methylthiophen-2-yl)pyridine (3) or 2-(5-methylthiophen-2-yl)-6-methylpyridine (4) have been prepared and characterized in solution and the solid state. Single crystal structures of [Cu(POP)(1)][PF6], [Cu(xantphos)(1)][PF6], [Cu(xantphos)(2)][PF6], [Cu(POP)(3)][PF6]·CH2Cl2, and [Cu(xantphos)(4)][PF6] confirm chelating N^S and P^P ligands, and distorted tetrahedral copper(i) centres. There is close cation⋯anion association, particularly in [Cu(xantphos)(1)][PF6]. Although the compounds are stable over days in CH2Cl2 solution, they are susceptible to the effects of competing ligands such as chloride ion and MeCN. Analysis of the NMR spectroscopic data of a solution of [Cu(POP)(3)][PF6] with added Cl−, gives a Kd value of 0.14 ± 0.03 mM, indicative of ion-pairing. [Cu(POP)(N^S)][PF6] and [Cu(xantphos)(N^S)][PF6] exhibit quasi-reversible or irreversible Cu+/Cu2+ oxidations. They are blue emitters in solution, and the presence of the 5-methyl group in the thiophene ring in 3 and 4 leads to a red-shift in the emission. The highest photoluminescence quantum yields are for [Cu(POP)(2)][PF6] (30.8%) and [Cu(POP)(4)][PF6] (33.2%), both of which have a 6-methyl-substituted pyridine ring in the N^S ligand. Excited-state lifetimes are <5 ns. On going from solution to powder samples, red-shifts of 133 to 163 nm are observed leading to yellow emitters. The brightest emitter, [Cu(xantphos)(1)][PF6], was tested in a LEC device but showed poor electroluminescence and poor charge transporting characteristics. [Cu(P^P)(N^S)][PF6] with N^S = 2-(thiophen-2-yl)pyridines show close cation⋯anion association in the solid-state; complex cation association with Cl− occurs in solution. The compounds are blue-emitters in solution with a red-shift of the emission on going to the solid.![]()

Abstract
Introduction of heterocycles into the helical skeleton of helicenes allows modulation of their redox, chiroptical, and photophysical properties. This paper describes the straightforward preparation and structural characterization by single-crystal X-ray diffraction of thiadiazole-[7]helicene, which was resolved into M and P enantiomers by chiral HPLC, together with its S-shaped double [4]helicene isomer, as well as the smaller congeners thiadiazole-[5]helicene and benzothiadiazole-anthracene. A copper(II) complex with two thiadiazole-[5]helicene ligands was structurally characterized, and it shows the presence of both M and P isomers coordinated to the metal center. The emission properties of the heterohelicenes are highly dependent on the helical turn, as the [7]- and [5]helicene are poorly emissive, whereas their isomers, that is, the S-shaped double [4]helicene and thiadiazole-benzanthracene, are luminescent, with quantum efficiencies of 5.4 and 6.5 %, respectively. DFT calculations suggest quenching of the luminescence of enantiopure [7]helicenes through an intersystem-crossing mechanism arising from the relaxed excited S1 state.

2-3,5-Ph2dp)Cr(THF)2Cl2] (2), and 2,6-bis(N-1,2,4-diazaphosphol-1-yl)pyridine chromium(III) trichloride {[2,6-bis(N-1,2,4-diazaphosphol-1-yl)pyridine]CrCl3} (3). X-ray diffraction analysis has shown that these six-coordinate complexes each have a pseudo-octahedral configuration. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy data for complex 1 for the paramagnetic S = 3/2 system (d
3 electron configuration) confirm a Cr(III) center in the octahedral coordination environment. The magnetic susceptibility of complex 1 followed the Curie–Weiss law well between 25 and 300 K. The magnetic moment of 1 was found to be close to the spin-only magnetic moment expected for three unpaired electrons (3.87 μB).

Abstract
Electronic circular dichroism and circularly polarized luminescence acid/base switching activity has been demonstrated in helicene-bipyridine proligand 1 a and in its "rollover" cycloplatinated derivative 2 a. Whereas proligand 1 a displays a strong bathochromic shift (>160 nm) of the nonpolarized and circularly polarized luminescence upon protonation, complex 2 a displays slightly stronger emission. This strikingly different behavior between singlet emission in the organic helicene and triplet emission in the organometallic derivative has been rationalized by using quantum-chemical calculations. The very large bathochromic shift of the emission observed upon protonation of azahelicene-bipyridine 1 a has been attributed to the decrease in aromaticity (promoting a charge-transfer-type transition rather than a π-π* transition) as well as an increase in the HOMO-LUMO character of the transition and stabilization of the LUMO level upon protonation.

Abstract
Enantiopure mono-cycloplatinated-[8]helicene and bis-cycloplatinated-[6]helicene derivatives were prepared through column chromatography combined with crystallization of diastereomeric complexes using a chiral ancillary sulfoxide ligand. The UV-visible spectra, circular dichroism, molar rotations, and (circularly polarized) luminescence activity of these new helical complexes have been examined in detail and analysed with the help of first-principles quantum-chemical calculations.

Abstract
The reaction of a {W(CO)5 }-stabilized phosphinophosphonate 1, (CO)5 WPH(Ph)P(O)(OEt)2 , with ethynyl- (2 a-f) and diethynylketones (7-11, 18, and 19) in the presence of lithium diisopropylamide (LDA) is examined. Lithiated 1 undergoes nucleophilic attack in the Michael position of the acetylenic ketones, as long as this position is not sterically encumbered by bulky (iPr)3 Si substituents. Reaction of all other monoacetylenic ketones with lithiated 1 results in the formation of 2,5-dihydro-1,2-oxaphospholes 3 and 4. When diacetylenic ketones are employed in the reaction, two very different product types can be isolated. If at least one (Me)3 Si or (Et)3 Si acetylene terminus is present, as in 7, 8, and 19, an anionic oxaphosphole intermediate can react further with a second equivalent of ketone to give cumulene-decorated oxaphospholes 14, 15, 24, and 25. Diacetylenic ketones 10 and 11, with two aromatic acetylene substituents, react with lithitated 1 to form exclusively ethenyl-bridged bisphospholes 16 and 17. Mechanisms that rationalize the formation of all heterocycles are presented and are supported by DFT calculations. Computational studies suggest that thermodynamic, as well as kinetic, considerations dictate the observed reactivity. The calculated reaction pathways reveal a number of almost isoenergetic intermediates that follow after ring opening of the initially formed oxadiphosphetane. Bisphosphole formation through a carbene intermediate G is greatly favored in the presence of phenyl substituents, whereas the formation of cumulene-decorated oxaphospholes is more exothermic for the trimethylsilyl-containing substrates. The pathway to the latter compounds contains a 1,3-shift of the group that stems from the acetylene terminus of the ketone substrates. For silyl substituents, the 1,3-shift proceeds along a smooth potential energy surface through a transition state that is characterized by a pentacoordinated silicon center. In contrast, a high-lying transition state TS(E'-F')R=Ph of 37 kcal mol(-1) is found when the substituent is a phenyl group, thus explaining the experimental observation that aryl-terminated diethynylketones 10 and 11 exclusively form bisphospholes 16 and 17.
