Abstract
Polyoxometalates (POMs) are a class of compounds known for the vast range of tunable structures and properties available, leading to applications in areas such as catalysis, energy, and advanced medicine. The ability to covalently functionalize POMs with organic components has been investigated extensively to tune the physical and chemical properties of the resulting hybrid materials. These hybrids, where the organic entity is covalently attached to the POM-core ( Class II hybrid POMs) result in a vast library of promising customizable catalytic systems, displaying tunable properties with a high level of synergy between the polyanion and the organic component. A number of Class II hybrids have been investigated for a wide range of catalytic applications, and here, we give a brief overview of Class II hybrids of the p-block elements and their applications in catalysis.

Abstract
This article describes the synthesis and characterization of an organic-inorganic hybrid polyoxometalate functionalized by a short link with a tripodal N-based ligand and its copper complex. Upon visible light irradiation, the latter is able to store up to three reducing equivalents. The locus of the reduction is discussed based on physicochemical measurements and DFT calculations. In the presence of Togni's reagent, this complex allows for the photocatalytic generation of CF3 radicals, opening the road to valuable synthetic applications.

Abstract
1,3- Bis-(2-methyl-2-propenyl)benzimidazolium chloride and its Ag(I) complex are synthesized and the structures are elucidated using spectroscopies techniques. The molecular and crystal structures of the benzimidazolium salt are confirmed by X-ray crystallography. The molecular geometries of the benzimidazolium and its Ag(I) salt are analyzed using the B3LYP functional with the 6–311+G(d,p)/LANL2DZ basis set. The observed Fourier transform infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance isotropic shifts are compared with the calculated values. Besides, the quantum chemical identifiers, significant intramolecular interactions, and molecular electrostatic potential plots are used to show the tendency/site of the chemical reactivity behavior. The three-dimensional Hirshfeld surfaces and the associated two-dimensional fingerprint plots are applied to obtain an insight into the behavior of the interactions in the crystal. Both compounds are tested for their in vitro anticancer activities against DU-145 and MCF-7 cancer cells and L-929 non-cancer cells using the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay.

Abstract
We have synthesized and structurally characterized the 4-palladium(II)-containing 30-tungsto-4-arsenate(V), [Pd4(As2W15O56)2]16- (1), which represents the first palladium(II)-containing tungstoarsenate(V). The title polyanion 1 was prepared by a simple one-pot procedure in aqueous medium and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), cyclic voltammetry, elemental analysis, and 183W nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), infrared (IR), and ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopies. Polyanion 1 consists of four Pd2+ ions that are coordinated in a square-planar geometry to two trilacunary [As2W15O56]12- Wells-Dawson fragments resulting in a sandwich-type assembly. Catalytic studies on 1 revealed that it is an efficient catalyst precursor for the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions of various aryl halides in aqueous and nonaqueous media.

Abstract
Incorporating the building blocks of nature (e.g., peptides and DNA) into inorganic polyoxometalate (POM) clusters is a promising approach to improve the compatibilities of POMs in biological fields. To extend their biological applications, it is necessary to understand the importance of different non‐covalent interactions during self‐organization. A series of Anderson POM–peptide hybrids have been used as a simple model to demonstrate the role of different interactions in POM–peptide (biomolecules) systems. Regardless of peptide chain length, these hybrids follow similar solution behaviors, forming hollow, spherical supramolecular structures in acetonitrile/water mixed solvents. The incorporation of peptide tails introduces interesting stimuli‐responsive properties to temperature, hybrid concentration, solvent polarity and ionic strength. Unlike the typical bilayer amphiphilic vesicles, they are found to follow the blackberry‐type assemblies of hydrophilic macroions, which are regulated by electrostatic interaction and hydrogen bonding. The formation of electrostatic assemblies before the supramolecular formation is confirmed by ion‐mobility mass spectrometry (IMS‐MS).

Polyoxometalate electrocatalysts based on earth-abundant metals for efficient water oxidation in acidic media. Nat Chem 2017; 10:24-30. Abstract
Water splitting is a promising approach to the efficient and cost-effective production of renewable fuels, but water oxidation remains a bottleneck in its technological development because it largely relies on noble-metal catalysts. Although inexpensive transition-metal oxides are competitive water oxidation catalysts in alkaline media, they cannot compete with noble metals in acidic media, in which hydrogen production is easier and faster. Here, we report a water oxidation catalyst based on earth-abundant metals that performs well in acidic conditions. Specifically, we report the enhanced catalytic activity of insoluble salts of polyoxometalates with caesium or barium counter-cations for oxygen evolution. In particular, the barium salt of a cobalt-phosphotungstate polyanion outperforms the state-of-the-art IrO2 catalyst even at pH < 1, with an overpotential of 189 mV at 1 mA cm-2. In addition, we find that a carbon-paste conducting support with a hydrocarbon binder can improve the stability of metal-oxide catalysts in acidic media by providing a hydrophobic environment.

The Dawson tungstovanadate [P2 W15 V3 O62 ](9-) can be grafted to secondary diolamides. The electron-withdrawing character of the polyanion increases the acidity of the amide proton, leading to an organo-polyoxometalate, which can be used as a Brønsted organocatalyst. High-field NMR and DFT modeling indicate that the amide proton stays on the nitrogen and that the exalted acidity derives from the interaction between the organic and inorganic parts of the organo-polyoxometalate. The amide-inserted vanadotungstates thus form a new family of (hybrid) heteropolyacids, offering new perspectives for the application of POM-based catalysis in organic synthesis.

Abstract
The rhodium(I) complexes [Rh(Cl)(COD)(R-NHC-(CH2 )3 Si(OiPr)3 )] [COD=cyclooctadiene; R=2,6-diisopropylphenyl (1 a); n-butyl (1 b)] are effective catalyst precursors for the homogeneous hydrodechlorination of benzyl chloride using HSiEt3 as hydrogen source. This reaction is selective to the formation of toluene. However, in presence of a stoichiometric amount of potassium tert-butoxide (KtBuO) the formation of mixtures containing toluene together with 17-19 mol % of the C--C homocoupling product, namely PhCH2 CH2 Ph, is observed. A mechanism proposal based on experimental insights and theoretical calculations at the DFT level that allows explanation of the experimental findings is included. Moreover, the heterogeneous catalytic system based on catalyst 1 a supported on MCM-41 has been demonstrated to be effective for the solvent-free hydrodechlorination of benzyl chloride using HSiEt3 and HSiMe(OSiMe3 )2 .

Abstract
Polyoxometalates (POMs) have remarkable properties and a great deal of potential to meet contemporary societal demands regarding health, environment, energy and information technologies. However, implementation of POMs in various functional architectures, devices or materials requires a processing step. Most developments have considered the exchange of POM counterions in an electrostatically driven approach: immobilization of POMs on electrodes and other surfaces including oxides, embedding in polymers, incorporation into Layer-by-Layer assemblies or Langmuir-Blodgett films and hierarchical self-assembly of surfactant-encapsulated POMs have thus been thoroughly investigated. Meanwhile, the field of organic-inorganic POM hybrids has expanded and offers the opportunity to explore the covalent approach for the organization or immobilization of POMs. In this critical review, we focus on the use of POM hybrids in selected fields of applications such as catalysis, energy conversion and molecular nanosciences and we endeavor to discuss the impact of the covalent approach compared to the electrostatic one. The synthesis of organic-inorganic POM hybrids starting from bare POMs, that is the direct functionalization of POMs, is well documented and reliable and efficient synthetic procedures are available. However, as the complexity of the targeted functional system increases a multi-step strategy relying on the post-functionalization of preformed hybrid POM platforms could prove more appealing. In the second part of this review, we thus survey the synthetic methodologies of post-functionalization of POMs and critically discuss the opportunities it offers compared to direct functionalization.
