Dendritic Oligothiophenes Terminated with Tris(alkyloxy)phenylethynyl Tails: Synthesis, Physical Properties, and Self-Assembly

Fluorene-Based Donor-Acceptor Copolymers Containing Functionalized Benzotriazole Units: Tunable Emission and their Electrical Properties

Monomers 4,7-dibromo-2H-benzo[d]1,2,3-triazole (m1) and 4,7-(bis(4-bromophenyl)ethynyl)-2H-benzo[d]1,2,3-triazole (m2) have been synthesized in good yields using different procedures. Monomers m1 and m2 have been employed for building new copolymers of fluorene derivatives by a Suzuki reaction under microwave irradiation using the same conditions. In each case different chain lengths have been achieved, while m1 gives rise to polymers for m2 oligomers have been obtained (with a number of monomer units lower than 7). Special interest has been paid to their photophysical properties due to excited state properties of these D-A units alternates, which have been investigated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations using two methods: (i) An oligomer approach and (ii) by periodic boundary conditions (PBC). It is highly remarkable the tunability of the photophysical properties as a function of the different monomer functionalization derived from 2H-benzo[d]1,2,3-triazole units. In fact, a strong modulation of the absorption and emission properties have been found by functionalizing the nitrogen N-2 of the benzotriazole units or by elongation of the π-conjugated core with the introduction of alkynylphenyl groups. Furthermore, the charge transport properties of these newly synthesized macromolecules have been approached by their implementation in organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) in order to assess their potential as active materials in organic optoelectronics.

Control over nanostructures and associated mesomorphic properties of doped self-assembled triarylamine liquid crystals

We have synthesized a series of triarylamine-cored molecules equipped with an adjacent amide moiety and dendritic peripheral tails in a variety of modes. We show by (1) H NMR and UV/Vis spectroscopy that their supramolecular self-assembly can be promoted in solution upon light stimulation and radical initiation. In addition, we have probed their molecular arrangements and mesomorphic properties in the bulk by integrated studies on their film state by using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), variable-temperature polarizing optical microscopy (VT-POM), variable-temperature X-ray diffraction (VT-XRD), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Differences in the number and the disposition of the peripheral tails significantly affect their mesomorphic properties associated with their lamellar- or columnar-packed nanostructures, which are based on segregated stacks of the triphenylamine cores and the lipophilic/lipophobic periphery. Such structural tuning is of interest for implementation of these soft self-assemblies as electroactive materials from solution to mesophases.

Novel Discotic Boroxines: Synthesis and Mesomorphic Properties

A new synthetic approach to highly substituted triphenylboroxines 11 is described. Their mesomorphic properties were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarizing optical microscopy (POM) and X-ray diffraction (SAXS, WAXS). The tris(3,4,5-trialkyloxy)phenyl functionalized derivatives 11b–e showed broad mesophases for a minimum alkyl chain length of C9. The phase widths ranged from 110 K to 77 K near room temperature, thus decreasing with enhanced alkyl chain lengths. Textures observed under POM indicated a columnar hexagonal (Col_h) mesophase symmetry that was confirmed by X-ray diffraction experiments.

Synthesis, optical properties and explosive sensing performances of a series of novel π-conjugated aromatic end-capped oligothiophenes

Four novel terthiophene (3T) derivatives, have been synthesized by employing Grignard coupling reaction via end-capping of naphthyl (NA) or pyrenyl (Py) unit to the one or two ends of 3T. It has been shown that both increasing electron donating strength and extending conjugation are effective approaches to improve the photochemical stability of the oligothiophene. Fluorescence studies demonstrated that the emission of the 3T derivatives is sensitive to the presence of some important nitro-containing explosives in their ethanol solution, in particular, 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (PA) and 3,5-dinitro-2,6-bispicrylamino pyridine (PYX). As an example, the detection limits of 4 to PA and PYX were determined to be 6.21 × 10(-7)mol/L and 8.95 × 10(-7)mol/L, respectively. Based on the discovery, a colorimetric detection method has been developed. The sensitive and selective response of the modified 3T to the explosives have been tentatively attributed to the adsorptive affinity of the compounds to the explosives, and to the higher probability of the electron transfer from the electron-rich 3T derivatives to the electron-poor nitro-containing explosives. No doubt, present study broadens the family of fluorophores which may be employed for the development of fluorescent sensors.

Optical waveguides from 4-aryl-4H-1,2,4-triazole-based supramolecular structures

Fused π-extended discotic triangular porphyrinoids

A novel fused two-dimensionally π-expanded triangular porphyrinoid has been designed. The synthesis is based on facile hexaazatrinaphthalene chemistry in combination with well-established condensation procedures to simultaneously close three porphyrinic cavities. A series of different functionalized π-expanded triangular derivatives were synthesized and their optical and electrochemical properties, as well as their supramolecular organization investigated. Low lying HOMO‒LUMO energy gaps between 1.11–1.32 eV were found for the highly π-conjugated planar triangular hexaazatrinaphthalene derivatives which organize into discotic liquid crystalline columnar stacks. Thereby, derivatives with alkoxy substituents reveal significantly higher order due to their improved flexibility in comparison to their alkyl counterparts.

Synthesis of oleophilic electron-rich phenylhydrazines

Phenylhydrazines 1 substituted with two or three long-chain alkyl, alkoxy or alkylsulfanyl groups were successfully prepared by acid-induced removal of the Boc group in hydrazides 2. The reaction is carried out with 5 equivalents of TfOH in CF₃CH₂OH/CH₂Cl₂ at −40 °C for 1.5 min. Under these conditions, the deprotected hydrazine 1 is fully protonated, which increases its stability in the reaction medium. The hydrazines were isolated in 60–86% yields and purities >90%. The hydrazides 2 were obtained in 43–71% yields from aryl bromides 5, which were lithiated with t-BuLi and subsequently reacted with di-tert-butyl azodicarboxylate (DTBAD).
