Vapor- and Mechanical-Grinding-Triggered Color and Luminescence Switches for Bis(σ-fluorophenylacetylide) Platinum(II) Complexes

Alkynylphosphonium Pt(II) Complexes: Synthesis, Characterization, and Features of Photophysical Properties in Solution and in the Solid State

A series of heteroleptic bis-alkynyl-diimine mononuclear Pt(II) complexes with alkynylphosphonium and di-tert-butyl-2,2'-bipyridine (dtbpy) ligands have been prepared and characterized by spectroscopic methods and single-crystal XRD. The Pt(II) complexes obtained in the present study demonstrate triplet emission in solution, which originates from 3MLCT/3LC states where the nature of the π-conjugated linker in the alkynylphosphonium ligand manages the contributions of each transition, and this conclusion is supported by DFT calculations. Additionally, the presence of the phosphonium group connected to alkynyl through the π-conjugated linker enhances nonlinear optical properties of the Pt(II) complexes increasing two-photon absorption cross section up to 400 GM. In the solid state, the Pt(II) complexes demonstrate emission that is attributed to 3MMLCT transitions due to the presence of Pt-Pt metallophilic interactions, and the reversible assembly and disassembly of these interactions by grinding and solvent treatment are responsible for the mechanochromic luminescence. It has been experimentally shown that stimuli-responsive emission of the Pt(II) complexes is the result of a "monomer/dimer" transformation; this conclusion is confirmed by DFT calculations for discrete complexes and different dimers with or without Pt-Pt interactions.

Luminescent Pt(II) Complexes Containing (1-Aza-15-crown-5)dithiocarbamate and (1-Aza-18-crown-6)dithiocarbamate: Mechanochromic and Solvent-Induced Luminescence

The strong tendency to stack in the solid state and rich luminescence for the Pt(II) complexes makes them potential candidates as new mechanochromic materials and sensing applications. Six mononuclear complexes [Pt(ppy)(O₄NCS₂)] (1), [Pt(bpy)(O₄NCS₂)]ClO₄ (2), [Pt(ppy)(O₅NCS₂)] (3), [Pt(phen)(O₄NCS₂)]ClO₄·CH₃OH (5a), [Pt(phen)(O₄NCS₂)]ClO₄ (5b), and [Pt(phen)(O₅NCS₂)]ClO₄ (6a), one dinuclear complex [Pt₂(phen)₂(NaO₅NCS₂)₂(ClO₄)₃]ClO₄ (6b), and one one-dimensional (1-D) coordination polymer {[Pt₂(bpy)₂(NaO₅NCS₂)₂(ClO₄)₂](ClO₄)₂}_n (4) were synthesized by reacting [Pt(ppy)Cl]₂, Pt(bpy)Cl₂, and Pt(phen)Cl₂ (ppy = 2-phenylpyridine, bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine, and phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) with (1-aza-15-crown-5)dithiocarbamate (O₄NCS₂) or (1-aza-18-crown-6)dithiocarbamate (O₅NCS₂), respectively, which have been isolated and structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction. Neutral complexes 1 and 3 contain no intermolecular Pt(II)···Pt(II) contact, whereas cationic complexes 2, 5a, 5b, and 6a with ClO₄^- as counteranions show alternative intermolecular Pt(II)···Pt(II) contacts of 3.535/4.091, 3.480/5.001, 3.527/4.571, and 3.446/4.987 Å in the solid state, respectively. Interestingly, complex 4 forms a 1-D coordination polymer through coordination between the encapsulated Na⁺ ions inside the azacrown ether rings of O₅NCS₂ and ClO₄^- anions with respective intra- and intermolecular Pt(II)···Pt(II) contacts of 3.402 and 3.847 Å in crystal lattices, whereas a dinuclear complex 6b was surprisingly formed and also connected by the encapsulated Na⁺ ions and ClO₄^- anions with alternative intra- and intermolecular Pt(II)···Pt(II) contacts of 3.650 and 3.677/4.4.372 Å, respectively. Upon excitation, complexes 1 and 3 showed similar vibronic luminescence at 507, 534, and 502, 532 nm, respectively, and the other complexes 2 and 4-6 showed broad luminescence with maxima at 537-567 nm. The B3LYP/LanL2DZ calculation was carried out and used to clarify their excited-state properties. In addition, the powder samples for complexes 1-4 almost showed no energy shift for the luminescence and significantly those of complexes 5-6 exhibited the mechanochromic luminescence upon grinding. It is noted that complexes 5a and 6a only showed minor red shifts (i.e., from 544 to 556 nm for complex 5a and from 551 to 565 nm for complex 6a), whereas complex 6b exhibited a remarkable red shift from 558 to 603 nm upon grinding. Besides, their luminescence reversibility was also examined toward various solvents.

Mechanical and Thermal ON-OFF Switching of the Vapochromic Behavior of a Luminescent Polymorphic Pt(II) Complex

Vapochromic materials that exhibit color/luminescence changes induced by vapor exposure have attracted considerable attention. Herein, we report the grinding- and heating-induced ON-OFF switching of the vapochromic behavior of [Pt(ppyCl₂)(Clacac)] (1; ppyCl₂ = 2-(3-chlorophenyl)-4-chloropyridinato, Clacac = 3-chloroacetylacetonato). 1 formed yellow and orange polymorphs (1-Y and 1-O), and 1-Y could be converted to 1-Og, which showed a very similar crystal structure but with a broadened X-ray diffraction pattern compared with that of 1-O. Moreover, 1-Og can be reversibly transformed into 1-O via heating and grinding. Notably, 1-Og underwent a N,N-dimethylacetamide vapor-induced transformation to 1-Y, whereas 1-O did not undergo such a transformation. These results indicate the ON-OFF switching of vapochromic behavior induced via grinding and heating. This finding will be beneficial for developing intelligent molecular devices.

Control of Fluorescence of Organic Dyes in the Solid-State by Supramolecular Interactions

Fluorescent organic dyes play an essential role in the creation of new "smart" materials. Fragments and functional groups capable of free rotation around single bonds can significantly change the fluorescent organic dye's electronic structure under analyte effects, phase state transitions, or changes in temperature, pressure, and media polarity. Dependencies between steric and electronic structures become highly important in transition from a solution to a solid-state. Such transitions are accompanied by a significant increase in the dye molecular structure's rigidity due to supramolecular associates' formation such as H-bonding, π···π and dipole-dipole interactions. Among those supramolecular effects, H-bonding interactions, first of all, lead to significant molecular packing changes between loose or rigid structures, thus affecting the fluorescent dye's electronic states' energy and configuration, its fluorescent signal's position and intensity. All the functional groups and heteroatoms that are met in the organic dyes seem to be involved in the control of fluorescence via H-bonding: C-H···N, C-H···π, S = O···H-C, P = O···H, C-H···O, NH···N, C - H···C, C - H···Se, N-H···O, C - H···F, C-F···H. Effects of molecular packing of fluorescent organic dyes are successfully used in developing mechano-, piezo-, thermo- fluorochromes materials for their applications in the optical recording of information, sensors, security items, memory elements, organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) technologies.

Vapor-Induced Conversion of a Centrosymmetric Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Crystal into a Proton-Conducting Second-Harmonic-Generation-Active Material

Chemical responsivity in materials is essential to build systems with switchable functionalities. However, polarity-switchable materials are still rare because inducing a symmetry breaking of the crystal structure by adsorbing chemical species is difficult. In this study, we demonstrate that a molecular organic-inorganic hybrid crystal of (NEt₄)₂[MnN(CN)₄] (1) undergoes polarity switching induced by water vapor and transforms into a rare example of proton-conducting second-harmonic-generation-active material. Centrosymmetric 1 transforms into noncentrosymmetric polar 1·3H₂O and 1·MeOH by accommodating water and methanol molecules, respectively. However, only water vapor causes a spontaneous single-crystal-to-single-crystal transition. Moreover, 1·3H₂O shows proton conduction with 2.3 × 10^-6 S/cm at 298 K and a relative humidity of 80%.

Aryl/Heteroaryl Substituted Boron-Difluoride Complexes Bearing 2-(Isoquinol-1-yl)pyrrole Ligands Exhibiting High Luminescence Efficiency with a Large Stokes Shift

A series of 2-(isoquinol-1-yl)pyrrole-boron complexes possessing (hetero)aryl substituents on the pyrrole and/or isoquinoline moiety were prepared. These compounds exhibited the fluorescence emission character in both solution and solid state. In most cases, the large Stokes shift and high fluorescence quantum yield in the solution were compatible. Furthermore, the structural diversity allowed the precise tuning of emitting colors from light blue to red with strong emission intensity. The present paper describes their comprehensive optical characteristics dependent on the type and position of the substituted aryl groups by the experimental and computational studies.

An asymmetric Pt diimine acetylide complex providing unique luminescent multinuclear sandwich complexes with Cu salts

The formation and photophysical properties of two types of sandwich complexes supported by asymmetric Pt complex units having two different acetylide moieties are reported. The asymmetric Pt complex unit was obtained via acetylide metathesis reaction between two types of symmetric Pt complexes. The reversible acetylide exchange reaction was effectively suppressed by the incorporation of Cu ions to give unique chiral Pt₄Cu₃ and achiral Pt₂Cu₄Br₄ sandwich complexes. The sandwich complexes exhibited moderate photoluminescence in the solid state, and their photophysical properties depended on the sandwich structures. These results suggest that asymmetric Pt complex units can give remarkable assembled structures by the concerted effect of labile coordination bonds and weak noncovalent interactions.

Cyclometalated Platinum(II) Complexes in a Cis-N,N Configuration: Photophysical Properties and Isomerization to Trans Isomers

Synthesis, isomerization, and photophysical properties of novel cis-N,N-cyclometalated complexes [Pt(C^∧N)(l-Phe)] (C^∧N = benzoquinolinate (1), phenylpyridinate (2), 2-(p-tolyl)pyridinate (3), and 1-phenylpyrazolate (4); l-Phe^- = l-phenylalaninate) are reported herein. In solution, the cis forms of the complexes isomerize to their trans forms via an associative mechanism. This cis/trans isomerism barely influences the absorption and luminescence properties of the complexes in solution, except for a characteristic absorption at approximately 340 nm in the absorption spectra of the cis complexes that is not observed for the trans complexes. Interestingly, the cis complexes are spontaneously assembled in a crystalline phase and show bathochromic absorption and emission colors compared with those of the corresponding trans isomers, which are aggregated in an amorphous phase. cis-1 and cis-2 demonstrate hypsochromic luminescence mechanochromism. The influence of the geometrical isomerism on the photophysical properties and the isomerization mechanism are supported by density functional theory calculations.

Reversible colour/luminescence colour changes of tetracyanoruthenium(II) complexes by sorption/desorption of water molecules in crystals

We report colour/luminescence colour changes of M[Ru(bpy)(CN)₄] crystal (M²⁺ = Ca²⁺, Sr²⁺, and Ba²⁺; bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine). The X-ray crystallographic study revealed that the crystals are constructed from linear-chains of {[Ru(bpy)(CN)₄][Ca(H₂O)₅]}_n, {[Ru(bpy)(CN)₄][Sr(H₂O)₆]}_n, and {[Ru(bpy)(CN)₄]₂[Ba(H₂O)₅]₂(μ-H₂O)₂}_n, respectively. Ru(II) complex linear chains and the hydrophilic channels composed of M²⁺ ion and water along them enable reversible water sorption/desorption without collapse of crystals responsible for the colour change. The emission spectra of Ca²⁺ and Sr²⁺ salts are remarkably shifted to the red side when the temperature was increased from 296 to 500 K, while Ba²⁺ salt shows a slight shift in the emission spectrum during the heating. The change in the interaction of M²⁺ ion to the equatorial CN ligand depending on the number of hydrated water molecules effectively contributes to the luminescence colour change for Ca²⁺ and Sr²⁺ salts. FT-IR spectra after heating at 473 K show the high-frequency shifts in the CN stretching mode for Sr²⁺ salt, while no remarkable peak shifts are observed for Ca²⁺ and Ba²⁺ salts. Thermogravimetry results indicate that heating over 470 K leads to the desorption of 5H₂O from all salts, resulting in {[Ru(bpy)(CN)₄][Ca]}_n, {[Ru(bpy)(CN)₄][Sr(H₂O)]}_n, and {[Ru(bpy)(CN)₄]₂[Ba]₂(μ-H₂O)₂}_n for linear chains. The change in the hydration structure for M²⁺ ions regulates the shift of CN stretching modes.

Phosphorescent Cyclometalated Platinum(II) Enantiomers with Circularly Polarized Luminescence Properties and Their Assembly Behaviors

Platinum(II) complexes as supramolecular luminescent materials have received considerable attention due to their unique planar structures and fascinating photophysical properties. However, the molecular design of platinum(II) complexes with impressive circularly polarized luminescence properties still remains challenging and rarely explored. Herein, we reported a series of cyclometalated platinum(II) complexes with benzaldehyde and its derived imine-containing alkynyl ligands to investigate their phosphorescent, chiroptical, and self-assembly behaviors. An isodesmic growth mechanism is found for their temperature-dependent self-assembly process. The chiral sense of the enantiomers can be transferred from the chiral alkynyl ligands to the cyclometalated platinum(II) dipyridylbenzene N^C^N chromophore and further amplified through supramolecular assembly via intermolecular noncovalent interactions. Notably, distinctive phosphorescent properties and nanostructured morphologies have been found for enantiomers 4R and 4S. Their intriguing self-assembled nanostructures and phosphorescence behaviors are supported by crystal structure determination, ¹H NMR, emission, and UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray powder diffraction studies.

Rapid Luminescent Enhancement Triggered by One-shot Needlestick-stimulus Using a Liquescent Gold(I) Salt

Luminescence from a gold(I) complex with an N-heterocycliccarbene-based ligand, 1⁺ ⋅NTf₂ ^- , increased rapidly upon the application of one-shot needlestick-stimulus. The weakly orange-emitting solid-state of 1⁺ ⋅NTf₂ ^- was prepared by cooling its melted liquid to 90 °C. Upon applying a weak pinpoint stimulus with a needle, this weakly orange-emitting solid state transformed into an intensively violet-blue-emitting state on a timescale of seconds. The emission after applying the stimulus could be visualized upon UV excitation even under ambient room light. This sequential phase transition from a stable solid to a liquid and then to a metastable solid could occur repeatedly without any measurable degradation of the complex. Various shapes could be prepared by casting the liquid-state complex into molds of different designs. This rapid response is thought to be triggered by the flexible intermolecular interactions in the kinetically generated aggregates formed upon cooling the liquid state, and by the strong Au-Au interactions in the thermodynamically stable crystals after applying the needlestick-stimulus.

Strategy for Achieving Long-Wavelength Near-Infrared Luminescence of Diimineplatinum(II) Complexes

Although many strategies have been used to help design effective near-infrared (NIR) luminescent materials, it is still a huge challenge to realize long-wavelength NIR luminescence of diimineplatinum(II) complexes in the solid state. Herein, we have successfully achieved long-wavelength NIR luminescence of a family of diimineplatinum(II) complexes based on a new strategy that combines a one-dimensional (1D) "Pt wire" structure with the electronic effect of the substituent. The structures of six solvated diimineplatinum(II) complexes based on 4,4-dichloro-2,2'-bipyridine or 4,4-dibromo-2,2'-bipyridine and 4-substituted phenylacetylene ligands have been determined, namely, 1·¹/₂toluene, 2·¹/₂THF, 3·¹/₈toluene, 4·¹/₂THF, 5·¹/₈CH₂Cl₂, and 6·¹/₄toluene. All of them crystallize in the monoclinic space group C2/c or C2/m and stack in the 1D "Pt wire" structure. In the solid state, six complexes exhibited unusual long-wavelength metal-metal-to-ligand charge-transfer luminescence that peaked at 984, 1044, 972, 990, 1022, and 935 nm, respectively. Interestingly, 2·¹/₂THF has the shortest Pt···Pt distance and the longest emission wavelength among the six complexes. As far as we know, the luminescence of 2·¹/₂THF at 1044 nm is the longest emission wavelength among known diimineplatinum(II) complexes. Systematic studies revealed that good molecular planarity, suitable substituent position, weak hydrogen-bond-forming ability of the substituents, appropriate molecular bending, and weakening of the interaction between solvated molecules and platinum molecules are conducive to the construction of a 1D "Pt wire" structure of the diimineplatinum(II) complex. Furthermore, the emission energy of the complex is mainly determined by the strength of the Pt-Pt interaction and electronic effect of the substituent.

Solvent-Induced Luminescence and Structural Transformation of a Dinuclear Gold(I) (Aza-18-crown-6)dithiocarbamate Compound

The reaction of AuCl(SMe₂) with equimolar NaO₅NCS₂ [O₅NCS₂ = (aza-18-crown-6)dithiocarbamate] in CH₃CN gave [Au₂(O₅NCS₂)₂]·2CH₃CN (2·2CH₃CN), where six other 2·solvates (solvates = 2DMF, 2DMSO, 2THF, 2acetone, 1.5toluene, and 1.5anisole) can be successfully isolated from different crystal-growing processes (i.e., ether diffusion, layer method, or evaporation in air) by dissolving the dry powder samples of 2·2CH₃CN in the respective solvents, and their crystal structures are all determined by X-ray diffraction as well. It is noted that there are different intermolecular Au(I)···Au(I) contacts in combination with various luminescences for 2·solvates and indeed there is a close relationship between intermolecular Au(I)···Au(I) contacts [i.e., 2.8254(7)-2.9420(5) Å] and luminescence energies (i.e., 554-604 nm), including three examples of 2·2CH₃CN, 2·0.5m-xylene, and 2·tert-butylbenzene·H₂O reported in our previous work. In 2·solvates, the toluene and tert-butylbenzene solvates have the shortest [2.8254(7)-2.8289(7) Å] and longest [2.9420(5) Å] intermolecular Au(I)···Au(I) contacts, respectively, and consequently they show the respective lowest (604 nm) and highest (554 nm) luminescence energies. Indeed, 2·solvates exhibit different types of time-dependent luminescence upon solvate loss in air. Furthermore, B3LYP/LanL2DZ calculation results can help to clarify the relationship between intermolecular Au(I)···Au(I) contacts and luminescence energies for 2·solvates.

Cooperative phenomenon of vapochromism and proton conduction of luminescent Pt(ii) complexes for the visualisation of proton conductivity

The luminescent and proton conductive Pt(ii) complex [PtCl(tpy-o-py)]Cl and its HCl adduct [PtCl(tpy-o-pyH)]Cl₂ (o-Pt and o-Pt·HCl, respectively; tpy-o-py = 2,2':6',2''-terpyridine-6',2'''-pyridine) were synthesised and their crystal structures, vapochromic behaviour, and proton conduction, were investigated and compared to those of the para isomers [PtCl(tpy-p-py)]Cl and [PtCl(tpy-p-pyH)]Cl₂ (p-Pt and p-Pt·HCl, respectively; tpy-p-py = 2,2':6',2''-terpyridine-4',4'''-pyridine). X-ray structure analysis revealed that the intermolecular metallophilic (PtPt) interaction was negligible in o-Pt but effective in o-Pt·HCl. Reversible transformation between o-Pt and o-Pt·HCl coupled with significant colour and luminescence changes was achieved by four different external stimuli, namely: exposure of o-Pt to humid HCl gas to form o-Pt·HCl, heating, exposure to MeOH vapour, and finally drying in air to regenerate the original o-Pt. The intraligand π-π* orange emission observed for o-Pt exhibited negligible dependence on the relative humidity (RH). Conversely, o-Pt·HCl exhibited red metal-metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (MMLCT) phosphorescence at 725 nm, originating from effective intermolecular Pt-Pt interactions, and interesting vapochromic behaviour that was dependent on the RH. Notably, o-Pt·HCl presented higher conductivity than the p-Pt·HCl isomer at RH < 80%. This trend was reversed at RH values > 80%, probably owing to the second water-adsorption-induced transformation of p-Pt·HCl. The cooperative phenomenon between the proton conduction and vapochromic behaviour observed for both o-Pt·HCl and p-Pt·HCl should allow the visualisation of the proton-conducting pathway, without the need for a bulk electrode, via the absorption and emission colours at both macroscopic and microscopic levels.

Long-wavelength NIR luminescence of 2,2′-bipyridyl-Pt(ii) dimers achieved by enhanced Pt–Pt interaction

Benefiting from the very strong intermolecular Pt–Pt interaction, 2,2′-bipyridyl-Pt(ii) dimers have achieved long-wavelength near-infrared luminescence exceeding 1000 nm for the first time.

Steric Engineering of Cyclometalated Pt(II) Complexes toward High-Contrast Monomer-Excimer-Based Mechanochromic and Vapochromic Luminescence

Ligands play a crucial role in the supramolecular photoluminescence properties of Pt(II) square-planar complexes. To improve the luminescence color responses of N∧C∧N cyclometalated Pt(II) complexes to external stimuli such as mechanical stress and chemical vapors, we have conducted a steric engineering of the previous systems 1a-1d [Inorg. Chem. 2017, 56, 4978-4989] by introducing two tert-butyl groups to the tridentate ligand to form complexes 2a-2c. Unlike the "too low" or "too high" steric hindrance of the NCNPt core in 1a-1d, the combined steric effects of the tert-butyl groups at one side and the pentiptycene group at the other side of the NCNPt core in 2b are "just right" for generating as-prepared powders with pure monomer (green) emission or pure excimer (red) emission, depending on the rate of precipitation from solutions. The synergistic steric effects are also beneficial to the solid-state luminescence quantum efficiency (30-36%). As a result of the differences in steric interactions and thus in the relative monomer vs excimer emission intensity, each complex of 2a-2c performs a two-step luminescence mechanochromism and vapochromism with different color patterns. This work provides an intriguing example of steric engineering of Pt(II) complexes toward highly emissive molecular solids with high-contrast mechanochromic and vapochromic luminescence.

Luminescence of mononuclear Pt(ii) complexes with glycolate: external stimuli-induced excimer emission changes to oligomer emissions

Trihydrate crystals of novel Pt^II complexes [Pt^II(bpy)(gl)] (bpy: 2,2′-bipyridine; Hgl⁻: glycolate) show excimer emission changes to two kinds of oligomer emissions depending on the type of external stimuli.

Synthesis and Photoluminescence of Tetracyanidonitridorhenium(V) Complexes with Five-Membered N-Heteroaromatic Ligands and Photoluminescence-Intensity Change

Novel tetracyanidonitridorhenium(V) complexes with five-membered N-heteroaromatic ligands, (PPh₄)₂[ReN(CN)₄L] [L = imidazole (Him) (2), 1-methylimidazole (Mim) (3), and pyrazole (pyz) (4)] and (PPh₄)₂[ReN(CN)₄L]·L [L = Him (5) and Mim (6)], were synthesized by the reactions of (PPh₄)₂[ReN(CN)₄] (1) with Him, Mim, and pyz, and their structures were determined by single-crystal X-ray analysis. The complexes 2, 3, 4, and 6 showed intense photoluminescence, with the emission quantum yields (Φ_em) being 0.65-0.75 in the solid state at 296 K. In contrast, the Φ_em and τ_em values of 5 are significantly smaller and shorter, respectively, than the relevant values of 2. The interconversion reactions among 1, 2, and 5 accompanied by large photoluminescence-intensity changes were accomplished by solvent-free reactions and exposure of water. The mechanochemical reaction of 2 with 1 mol equiv of Him in the solid state gave 5. Complex 5 was also obtained by the mechanochemical reaction of 1 with 2 mol equivalents of Him in the solid state. By placing solid of 5 in water, the solid showed intense photoluminescence to give 2. Complex 1 was produced under vacuum at 185 °C from 2 or 5.

Smart Responsive Luminescent Aptamer-Functionalized Covalent Organic Framework Hydrogel for High-Resolution Visualization and Security Protection of Latent Fingerprints

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have been proposed as alternative candidates for "smart" materials due to their ordered π-columnar structures. However, it remains a challenge to develop external-stimuli-responsive luminescent COFs for confidential information protection. Here, we have designed and synthesized a water-dispersible and smart responsive luminescent carboxymethyl cellulose-COF hydrogel encapsulated 5-(dimethylamino)-N,N-bis (pyridin-2-ylmethyl) napthalene-1-sulfonamide, named CMC-COF-LZU1⊃DPYNS, for latent fingerprint imaging and encryption. We show that the fluorescence of CMC-COF-LZU1⊃DPYNS is reversibly switchable upon addition of Cu²⁺/H₂O. This effect endows potential applications of tunable luminescent COFs based hydrogel as an invisible security probe for imaging, recording, storage, and security of latent fingerprint information. It is shown that the latent fingerprint information incubated by the aptamer-functionalized CMC-COF-LZU1⊃DPYNS hydrogel is invisible in the presence of Cu²⁺, but three levels of fingerprint features with high-resolution patterns could be readable upon addition of H₂O under UV light. The design strategy provides a promising platform for the development of smart responsive luminescent COFs and their detection and protection of valuable latent fingerprint information.

Facile and Equipment-Free Data Encryption and Decryption by Self-Encrypting Pt(II) Complex

Luminescence switching materials are vital to various data security-related techniques, including data encryption-decryption. Here, we report a family of pseudopolymorphs based on a diimine-platinum(II) complex, Pt(Me₃SiC≡CbpyC≡CSiMe₃)(C≡CC₆H₄Br-3)₂ (1), and systematically studied the influence of stacking modes on luminescence switching behaviors. Upon exposure to heat or tetrahydrofuran vapor, these pseudopolymorphs exhibit unusual stacking mode-intervened luminescence switching (SMILS) property that non-columnar and quasi-columnar pseudopolymorphs undergo single- and multi-step conversion processes, respectively, to the same non-columnar products. Systematic studies revealed that the unique SMILS behavior is caused by the existence of stable intermediate products as well as different conversion processes of pseudopolymorphs with distinct stacking modes. Such a new property leads to the self-encryption function of 1, which is very important for improving the existing data encryption-decryption technique. On this basis, we developed a facile, reusable, equipment-free technique with 1 as the only starting material and realized data encryption-decryption successfully.

Aggregation and Tunable Color Emission Behaviors of l-Glutamine-Derived Platinum(II) Bipyridine Complexes by Hydrogen-Bonding, π-π Stacking and Metal-Metal Interactions

An l-glutamine-derived functional group was introduced to the bis(arylalkynyl)platinum(II) bipyridine complexes 1-4. The emission could be switched between the ³ MLCT excited state and the triplet excimeric state through solvent or temperature changes, which is attributed to the formation and disruption of hydrogen-bonding, π-π stacking, and metal-metal interactions. Different architectures with various morphologies, such as honeycomb nanostructures and nanospheres, were formed upon solvent variations, and these changes were accompanied by ¹ H NMR and distinct emission changes. Additionally, yellow and red emissive metallogels were formed at room temperature due to the different aggregation behaviors introduced by the substituent groups on bipyridine. The thermoresponsive metallogel showed emission behavior with tunable colors by controlling the temperature. The negative Gibbs free-energy change (ΔG) and the large association constant for excimer formation have suggested that the molecules undergo aggregation through hydrogen-bonding, π-π, and metal-metal interactions, resulting in triplet excimeric emission.

High-contrast mechanochromic benzothiadiazole derivatives based on a triphenylamine or a carbazole unit

Four triphenylamine or carbazole-based benzothiadiazole fluorescent molecules have been successfully synthesized and characterized. Interestingly, the donor–acceptor (D–A) type luminogens 1, 2, 3 and 4 showed different solid-state fluorescence. Furthermore, the four compounds exhibited reversible high-contrast mechanochromism characteristics.

Four triphenylamine or carbazole-based benzothiadiazole dyes were synthesized. Interestingly, the four dyes exhibited high-contrast mechanochromism characteristics.

Rise of Conjugated Poly-ynes and Poly(Metalla-ynes): From Design Through Synthesis to Structure-Property Relationships and Applications

Conjugated poly-ynes and poly(metalla-ynes) constitute an important class of new materials with potential application in various domains of science. The key factors responsible for the diverse usage of these materials is their intriguing and tunable chemical and photophysical properties. This review highlights fascinating advances made in the field of conjugated organic poly-ynes and poly(metalla-ynes) incorporating group 4-11 metals. This includes several important aspects of conjugated poly-ynes viz. synthetic protocols, bonding, electronic structure, nature of luminescence, structure-property relationships, diverse applications, and concluding remarks. Furthermore, we delineated the future directions and challenges in this particular area of research.

Solvent-tuned charge-transfer properties of chiral Pt(ii) complex and TCNQ˙− anion adducts

A new pair of adducts comprising one chiral Pt(ii) complex cation, [Pt((−)-L₁)(Dmpi)]⁺ ((−)-1) or [Pt((+)-L₁)(Dmpi)]⁺ ((+)-1) [(−)-L₁ = (−)-4,5-pinene-6′-phenyl-2,2′-bipyridine, (+)-L₁ = (+)-4,5-pinene-6′-phenyl-2,2′-bipyridine, Dmpi = 2,6-dimethylphenylisocyanide], together with one TCNQ˙⁻ anion have been obtained, and the structures have been confirmed via single-crystal X-ray crystallography and infrared (IR) spectroscopy. The chiral Pt(ii) cation and TCNQ˙⁻ anion are dissociated in MeOH solution, while charge transfer adducts are formed in H₂O solution, leading to perturbation of the electronic structure and alteration of the chiral environment, as evidenced by the differences in the UV-vis absorption and electronic circular dichroism spectra. The solvent-tuned charge-transfer properties also have been validated through emission and resonance light scattering spectra. The interesting findings may have potential applications in the development of black absorbers and wide band gap semiconductors.

A new couple of charge transfer adducts comprising of one chiral Pt(ii) complex cation together with one TCNQ˙⁻ anion have been prepared, and solvent-induced variances of absorption, luminescence as well as chiral spectra have been investigated.

A rapidly-reversible absorptive and emissive vapochromic Pt(II) pincer-based chemical sensor

Selective, robust and cost-effective chemical sensors for detecting small volatile-organic compounds (VOCs) have widespread applications in industry, healthcare and environmental monitoring. Here we design a Pt(II) pincer-type material with selective absorptive and emissive responses to methanol and water. The yellow anhydrous form converts reversibly on a subsecond timescale to a red hydrate in the presence of parts-per-thousand levels of atmospheric water vapour. Exposure to methanol induces a similarly-rapid and reversible colour change to a blue methanol solvate. Stable smart coatings on glass demonstrate robust switching over 10⁴ cycles, and flexible microporous polymer membranes incorporating microcrystals of the complex show identical vapochromic behaviour. The rapid vapochromic response can be rationalised from the crystal structure, and in combination with quantum-chemical modelling, we provide a complete microscopic picture of the switching mechanism. We discuss how this multiscale design approach can be used to obtain new compounds with tailored VOC selectivity and spectral responses.
