Abstract
Chemiluminescence (CL), especially commercialized CL immunoassay (CLIA), is normally performed within the eye-visible region of the spectrum by exploiting the electronic-transition-related emission of the molecule luminophore. Herein, dual-stabilizers-capped CdTe nanocrystals (NCs) is employed as a model of nanoparticulated luminophore to finely tune the CL color with superior color purity. Initialized by oxidizing the CdTe NCs with potassium periodate (KIO4), intermediates of the reactive oxygen species (ROS) tend to charge CdTe NCs in both series-connection and parallel-connection routes and dominate the charge-transfer CL of CdTe NCs. The CdTe NCs/KIO4 system can exhibit color-tunable CL with the maximum emission wavelength shifted from 694 nm to 801 nm, and the red-shift span is over 100 nm. Both PL and CL of each of the CdTe NCs are bandgap-engineered; the change in the NCs surface state via CL reaction enables CL of each of the CdTe NCs to be red-shifted for ∼20 nm to PL, while the change in the NCs surface state via labeling CdTe NCs to secondary-antibody (Ab2) enables CL of the CdTe NCs-Ab2 conjugates to be red-shifted for another ∼20 nm to bare CdTe NCs. The CL of CdTe753-Ab2/KIO4 is ∼791 nm, which can perform near-infrared CL immunoassay and semi-automatically determined procalcitonin (PCT) on commercialized in vitro diagnosis (IVD) instruments.

Abstract
Optical single molecule detection is normally achieved via amplifying the total emission of photons of luminophores and is strongly anticipated to extend the commercialized application of chemiluminescence (CL). To overcome the limited CL photons of molecule luminophores, herein, a nanocrystal (NC) luminophore self-amplified strategy is proposed to repetitively excite CL luminophores for amplifying the total CL photons per luminophore, which can be exploited to perform CL immunoassays (CLIAs) toward single molecule detection via employing KMnO4 as the CL triggering agent and the dual-stabilizer-capped CdTe NCs as the CL luminophore. KMnO4 can oxidize the S element from each stabilizer of mercaptopropionic acid (MPA) and release enough energy to excite the CdTe core for flash CL. The substantial MPA around each CdTe core enables every CdTe luminophore to be repetitively excited and give off amplified total CL photons in a self-enhanced way. The CL of CdTe NCs/KMnO4 can release all photons rapidly, and the collection of all these photons can be utilized to determine the model analyte of thyroid-stimulating hormone antigen (TSH) with a limit of detection of 5 ag/mL (S/N = 3), which is corresponding to about 2-4 TSH molecules in a 20 μL sample. The whole immunologic operating process can be terminated within 6 min. This strategy of repetitively breaking the CL reaction involving chemical bonds within one luminophore is promising for semi-automatic as well as fully automatic single molecule detection and extends the commercialized application of CL immunodiagnosis.

Abstract
Coreactant-free electrochemiluminescence (ECL) is promising for removing the exogenous effects of coreactant and simplify the operation procedures and setups of commercialized ECL bioassays. Herein, an electrosterically involved strategy for achieving a low-triggering-potential (+0.21 V vs Ag/AgCl) and coreactant-free ECL from dual-stabilizer-capped CdTe nanocrystals (NCs) is proposed with mercaptopropionic acid (MPA) and hexametaphosphate (HMP) as the capping agents of luminophores. Upon employing the CdTe NCs as the ECL tag for the immunoassay, all the tags in the bioconjugates of the CdTe NCs and the secondary antibody (Ab2|CdTe) as well as in the final achieved sandwich-type immunocomplexes can exhibit efficient coreactant-free ECL with an electrosterically involved triggering potential nature. The bioconjugates of Ab2|CdTe with Ab2 no more than 30 kDa, such as the thyroid stimulating hormone (30 kDa) and the recombinant pro-gastrin releasing peptide (ProGRP, 14 kDa), merely exhibit coreactant-free ECL around +0.24 V, while bioconjugates of Ab2|CdTe with an Ab2 beyond 30 kDa only give off coreactant-free ECL around +0.82 V. Due to the further enhanced electrosteric effect in sandwich-type immunocomplexes, only the ECL immunosensor with ProGRP as the target can give off coreactant-free ECL around +0.24 V. The electrosterically involved and coreactant-free ECL of CdTe NCs is consequently utilized to sensitively and selectively determine the molecular protein ProGRP, which demonstrates a wide linearity range from 0.1 to 2000 pg/mL and a low limit of detection at 0.05 pg/mL (S/N = 3). This low-triggering-potential and coreactant-free combined ECL platform indicates that engineering the surface of CdTe NCs with a protein can improve the performance of ECL tags in a protein-weight-involved electrosterical way.

Abstract
Herein, low-triggering-potential (LTP) electrochemiluminescence (ECL) with an onset around 0.0 V (vs Ag/AgCl) is proposed with bovine serum albumin (BSA)-stabilized Au nanocrystals (BSA-AuNCs) as a luminophore and hydrazine hydrate (N2H4) as a coreactant. The BSA-AuNCs/N2H4 system can exhibit efficient LTP-ECL around 0.37 V with the luminophore of both monodispersed and surface-confined states. The LTP-ECL of BSA-AuNCs/N2H4 is a kind of single-color emission with a maximum emission wavelength around 740 nm, which is obviously red-shifted for 80 nm from that of BSA-AuNCs PL, and indicates that the ECL is generated in a surface-defect-involved route instead of the band-gap-engineered route. Importantly, BSA-AuNCs can be utilized as ECL tags to perform sandwich-type immunoassays with acceptable sensitivity and selectivity, which exhibits a wide linear response for determining CA125 from 0.5 to 1000 mU/mL and a limit of detection of 0.05 mU/mL (S/N = 3).

Abstract
Electrochemiluminescence (ECL) of low triggering potential is strongly anticipated for ECL assays with less inherent electrochemical interference and improved long-term stability of the working electrode. Herein, effects of the thiol capping agents and the states of luminophores, i.e., the thiol-capped CuInS2@ZnS nanocrystals (CuInS2@ZnS-Thiol), on the ECL triggering potential of CuInS2@ZnS-Thiol/N2H4·H2O were explored on the Au working electrode. The thiol capping agent of glutathione (GSH) not only enabled CuInS2@ZnS-Thiol/N2H4·H2O with the stronger oxidative-reduction ECL than other thiol capping agents but also demonstrated the largest shift for the ECL triggering potential of CuInS2@ZnS-Thiol/N2H4·H2O upon changing the luminophores from the monodispersed state to the surface-confined state. CuInS2@ZnS-GSH/N2H4·H2O exhibited an efficient oxidative-reduction ECL around 0.78 V (vs Ag/AgCl) with CuInS2@ZnS-GSH of the monodispersed state. Upon employing CuInS2@ZnS-GSH as the ECL tag and immobilizing them onto the Au working electrode, the oxidative-reduction ECL of CuInS2@ZnS-GSH/N2H4·H2O was lowered to 0.32 V (vs Ag/AgCl), which was about 0.88 V lower than that of traditional Ru(bpy)32+/TPrA (typically ∼1.2 V, vs Ag/AgCl). The ECL of the CuInS2@ZnS-GSH/N2H4·H2O system with the luminophore of both monodispersed and surface-confined states was spectrally identical to each other, indicating that this surface-confining strategy exhibited negligible effect on the excited state for the ECL of CuInS2@ZnS-GSH. A surface-confined ECL sensor around 0.32 V was fabricated with CuInS2@ZnS-GSH as a luminophore, which could sensitively and selectively determine the K-RAS gene from 1 to 500 pM with a limit of detection at 0.5 pmol L-1 (S/N = 3).

Abstract
Electrochemiluminescence (ECL) has continued to receive considerable attention in various applications, owing to its intrinsic advantages such as near-zero background response, wide dynamic range, high sensitivity, simple instrumentation, and low cost. The ECL luminophore is one of the most significant components during the light generation processes. Despite significant progress that has been made in the synthesis of new luminophores and their roles in resolving various challenges, there are few comprehensive summaries on ECL luminophores. In this review, we discuss some of the recent advances in organic, metal complexes, nanomaterials, metal oxides, and near-infrared ECL luminophores. We also emphasize their roles in tackling various challenges with illustrative examples that have been reported in the last few years. Finally, perspective and some unresolved challenges in ECL that can potentially be addressed by introducing new luminophores have also been discussed. Graphical abstract.

Abstract
A dual gears electrochemiluminecence (ECL) aptasensing strategy for multiple selective determination of kanamycin and neocycin was designed on the basis of the combination of kanamycin and neocycin induced dual gears conversion, the loading platform of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), surface plasmon resonance (SPR) and ECL resonance energy transfer (ERET) between CdS QDs and AuNPs (or PtNPs). In the absence of target, the dual gears were "off". Then the B1-AuNP (gear B) and aptamer 1-PtNPs acted as signal quenching elements to quench ECL intensity due to ERET process. Upon addition of kanamycin, the aptamer 1-PtNPs were removed from the gear gradually, the ECL was enhanced due to SPR process between AuNPs and CdS QDs. After the incubation of aptamer 2, the dual gears were "off" again and ECL intensity was decreased by ERET process between AuNPs and CdS QDs. In the presence of neomycin, dual gears were "on" again, the ECL signal was enhanced by SPR process between AuNPs and CdS QDs. Under optimal condition, the proposed aptasensor exhibited wide linear ranges of kanamycin (10-10-10-6 M) and neomycin (10-9-10-5 M), and relatively low detection limits to kanamycin (1.7 × 10-11 M) and neomycin (3.5 × 10-10 M). The developed aptasensor realized the multiple ECL detection of kanamycin and neomycin with single luminophore, and was successfully applied to the detection of kanamycin and neomycin in food samples.

Abstract
Tunable charge transfer in and out of nanocrystals (NCs) is crucial to their profound light-emitting applications. Herein a convenient strategy toward tunable electron-injection channels of NCs was achieved by partially coating highly passivated CdTe NCs with unperfected ZnSe shell. Potential- and spectrum-resolved electrochemiluminescence (ECL) characterizations proved that radiative charge recombination for ECL of the heterostructured ZnSe@CdTe NCs only occurred within CdTe core, whereas configurational ions in ECL solution could electrostatically or chemically change the surface states of both the ZnSe shell and the uncoated CdTe core, resulting in tunable electron-injection channels for ECL of ZnSe@CdTe NCs. S2- anion postponed the electron-injection channel for ECL of ZnSe@CdTe NCs from -1.44 to -1.58 V, Zn2+ cation presented two electron-injection channels for ECL at -1.53 and -1.22 V, respectively, whereas Cd2+ cation enabled three electron-injection channels for ECL at -1.53, -1.18, and -0.95 V, respectively. The "valve"-like role of configurational ions on the electron-injection channels of ZnSe@CdTe NCs is promising to design novel electrochemiluminophores.

Abstract
Copper indium sulfide (CuInS2, CIS) nanocrystals (NCs) are a promising solution to the toxic issue of Cd- and Pb-based NCs. Herein, electrochemiluminescence (ECL) of CIS NCs in aqueous medium is investigated for the first time with l-glutathione and sodium citrate-stabilized water-soluble CIS/ZnS NCs as model. The CIS/ZnS NCs can be oxidized to hole-injected states via electrochemically injecting holes into valence band at 0.55 and 0.94 V (vs Ag/AgCl), respectively. The hole-injected state around 0.94 V can bring out efficient oxidative-reduction ECL with a similar color to Ru(bpy)32+ in the presence of tri- n-propylamine (TPrA) and enable CIS/ZnS NCs promising ECL tags with l-glutathione as linker for labeling. The ECL of CIS/ZnS NCs/TPrA can be utilized to determine vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) from 0.10 to 1000 pM with the limit of detection at 0.050 pM (S/N = 3). Although the hole-injected state around 0.55 V is generated ahead of oxidation of TPrA and fails to bring out coreactant ECL, annihilation ECL proves that both hole-injected states generated, at 0.55 and 0.94 V, can be involved in electrochemical redox-induced radiative charge transfer by directly stepping CIS/ZnS NCs from electron-injecting potential to hole-injecting potential. CIS/ZnS NCs are promising nontoxic electrochemiluminophores with lowered ECL triggering potential around 0.55 V for less electrochemical interference upon the development of coreactant.

Abstract
Here we designed a near-infrared electrochemiluminescence (NECL) aptasensor for turn-on ultrasensitive determination of thrombin. It was based on the ECL resonance energy transfer (ECL-RET) of CdTe/CdS coresmall/shellthick quantum dots (QDs) to gold nanorods (AuNRs). AuNRs which functioned as ECL acceptors were assembled onto CdTe/CdS film by DNA hybridization between aptamers and their complementary oligonucleotides. In the absence of thrombin, the NECL of QDs was quenched as a result of the ECL-RET of QDs to AuNRs. In the presence of thrombin, the NECL of the system was "turned on" because thrombin can replace the AuNRs onto the QDs film, owing to the specific aptamer-protein affinity interactions. In this way, the increment of ECL intensity and the concentration of thrombin showed a logarithmic linear correlation in the range of 100 aM to 10 fM with a detection limit of 31 aM (S/N=3). Importantly, the developed aptasensor was successfully applied to thrombin sensing in real serum samples.

Electrochemiluminescence energy transfer-promoted ultrasensitive immunoassay using near-infrared-emitting CdSeTe/CdS/ZnS quantum dots and gold nanorods. Sci Rep 2013; 3:1529. Abstract
The marriage of energy transfer with electrochemiluminescence has produced a new technology named electrochemiluminescence energy transfer (ECL-ET), which can realize effective and sensitive detection of biomolecules. To obtain optimal ECL-ET efficiency, perfect energy overlapped donor/acceptor pair is of great importance. Herein, we present a sensitive ECL-ET based immunosensor for the detection of tumor markers, using energy tunable CdSeTe/CdS/ZnS double shell quantum dots (QDs) and gold nanorods (GNRs) as the donor and acceptor, respectively. Firstly a facile microwave-assisted strategy for the synthesis of green- to near-infrared-emitting CdSeTe/CdS/ZnS QDs with time- and component-tunable photoluminescence was proposed. And, on the basis of the adjustable optical properties of both CdSeTe/CdS/ZnS QDs and GNRs, excellent overlap between donor emission and acceptor absorption can be obtained to ensure effective ECL-ET quenching, thus improving the sensing sensitivity. This method represents a novel approach for versatile detection of biomolecules at low concentrations.

Abstract
A facile label-free electrochemiluminescent (ECL) DNA sensor was designed using a molecular beacon with a guanine-rich stem as a recognition probe. The ECL emission was produced from surface unpassivated CdTe quantum dots (QDs) co-immobilized with colloidal gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) on a chitosan-modified electrode surface. The molecular beacon was adsorbed onto the AuNPs by the thiolated stem. Upon the hybridization of the molecular beacon with target DNA to open the cycle in the presence of hemin, the dissociated guanine-rich sequence could conjugate hemin to form a G-quadruplex architecture. The formed DNAzyme then catalyzed the reduction of dissolved oxygen, the endogenous coreactant for ECL emission of QDs, leading to a decrease in ECL signal. The variations in surface morphology during the fabrication and recognition processes of the ECL sensor were characterized by atomic force microscopy and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The ECL signal inhibition depended linearly on the logarithmic value of DNA concentration ranging from 5.0 fM to 0.1 nM, with a detection limit of 0.9 fM. This proposed label-free method is a promising application of QDs-based ECL emission for ultrasensitive DNA assay.

Abstract
The electrochemistry, near-infrared photoluminescence (NIR-PL) spectroscopy, and electrogenerated chemiluminescence (ECL) of Au(25)(SC(2)H(4)Ph)(18)(+)C(6)F(5)CO(2)(-) (Au(25)(+)) clusters were investigated. For the first time, NIR-ECL emission was observed in both annihilation and coreactant paths. Our newly developed spooling spectroscopy was employed during the ECL evolution and devolution processes along with explicit NIR-PL spectroscopy to elucidate light generation mechanisms. It was discovered that the electronic relaxation of the Au(25)(-) excited state to the ground state plays a key role in giving off ECL at 893 nm, while intermediate, strong, and weak NIR-PL emissions at 719/820, 857, and 1080 nm can be attributed to the excited states higher than the HOMO-LUMO gap, across the HOMO-LUMO gap, and of semi-rings, respectively.
