Abstract
A series of helical quinolizinium salts were prepared utilizing Rh-catalyzed [2+2+2]cyclotrimerization and C-H activation processes as the crucial synthetic steps. The cyclotrimerization of appropriately substituted diynes with trimethylsilylethyne under Rh-catalyzed conditions provided the 1-arylisoquinolines in up to 61% isolated yields. Their Rh-catalyzed C-H activation/annulation with various aryl and alkyl disubstituted alkynes gave rise to [7]-helical quinolizinium salts in high isolated yields (up to 93%). Enantioselective C-H activation was also tried with asymmetric induction up to 62% ee. The respective boron and platinum complexes of 1-arylisoquinolines were prepared as well. All prepared compounds exhibit fluorescence in the orange-red light region (606-682 nm) with ΦFs 28-99%.

Abstract
Chiral molecular materials able to emit circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) have attracted considerable interest in the last few decades, due to the potential of CP-light in a wide range of applications. While CP luminescent molecules with blue, green, and yellow emissions are now well-reported, NIR CPL from organic and organometallic compounds lags behind due to the dual challenge of promoting radiative deexcitation of the excited state in this low energy region while assuring a significant magnetic dipole transition moment, a prerequisite for generating CPL. Based on a versatile axially chiral arylisoquinoline ligand, we report the synthesis and chiroptical properties of chiral donor-acceptor platinum(ii) complexes displaying CPL that extends up to almost 900 nm. Interestingly, these emitters show both fluorescence and phosphorescence emissions in solution, with intensities depending on the charge-transfer character of the organic ligand. Experimental and theoretical investigations show that this feature strongly impacts the intersystem crossing event between the singlet and triplet excited states of these complexes and the related phosphorescence lifetime. The effect is less important regarding the CPL, and most complexes show luminescence dissymmetry factors with values up to ca. 2 × 10-3 around 800 nm.

Abstract
We present a previously unknown series of cyclometalated platinum(IV) NHC complexes, obtained by oxidative addition of iodine, iodomethane, and different benzyl bromides to platinum(II) complexes with cyclometalated C^C* dibenzofuran, dibenzothiophene, and phenylimidazole ligands together with an acetylacetonate ligand. All compounds were characterized by standard techniques (1H, 13C, and 195Pt NMR and elemental analysis), and for three complexes, solid-state structures could be obtained. DFT calculations (B3LYP(d3)/def2-TZVPP including dispersion interactions in dichloromethane and acetone) were performed to investigate the mechanism of the oxidation and explain the exclusive formation of the observed trans products.

Abstract
Given the widely recognized bioactivity of 2-arylbenzothiazoles against tumor cells, we have designed a new family of luminescent heteroleptic pentafluorophenyl-bis(2-phenylbenzothiazolyl) PtIV derivatives, fac-[Pt(pbt)2(C6F5)L]n+ (n = 1, 0) [L = 4-Mepy 1, 4-pyridylbenzothiazole (pybt) 2, 4,4'-bipyridine (4,4'-bpy) 3, 1,2-bis-(4-pyridyl)ethylene (bpe) 4 (E/Z ratio: 90/10), 1,4-bis-(pyridyl)butadiyne (bpyb) 5, trifluoroacetate (-OCOCF3) 6] and a dinuclear complex [{Pt(pbt)2(C6F5)}2(μ-bpyb)](PF6)27, in which the trans ligand to the metalated C-(pbt) was varied to modify the optical properties and lipophilicity. Their photophysical properties were systematically studied through experimental and theoretical investigations, which were strongly dependent on the identity of the N-bonded ligand. Thus, complexes 1, 3 and 6 display, in different media, emission from the triplet excited states of primarily intraligand 3ILCT nature localized on the pbt ligand, while the emissions of 2, 5 and 7 were ascribed to a mixture of close 3IL'(N donor)/3ILCT(pbt) excited states, as supported by lifetime measurements and theoretical calculations. Irradiation of the initial E/Z mixture of 4 (15 min) led to a steady state composed of roughly 1 : 1.15 (E : Z) and this complex was not emissive at room temperature due to an enhanced intramolecular E to Z isomerization process of the 1,2-bis-(4-pyridyl)ethylene ligand. Complexes 1-3 and 6 showed excellent quantum yields for the generation of singlet oxygen in aerated MeCN solution with the values of ϕ(1O2) ranging from 0.66 to 0.86 using phenalenone as a reference. Cationic complexes 1-3 exhibited remarkable efficacy in the nanomolar range against A549 (lung carcinoma) and HeLa (cervix carcinoma) cell lines with notable selectivity relative to the non-tumorigenic BEAS-2B (bronchial epithelium) cells. In the A549 cell line, the neutral complex 6 showed low cytotoxicity (IC50: 29.40 μM) and high photocytotoxicity (IC50: 5.75) when cells were irradiated with blue light for 15 min. These complexes do not show evidence of DNA interaction.

Abstract
The calculation of magnetic transition dipole moments and rotatory strengths was implemented at the zeroth-order regular approximation (ZORA) two-component relativistic time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) level. The circular dichroism of the spin-forbidden ligand-field transitions of tris(ethylenediamine)cobalt(III) computed in this way agrees very well with available measurements. Phosphorescence dissymmetry factors g lum and the corresponding lifetimes are evaluated for three N-heterocyclic-carbene-based iridium complexes, two of which contain helicene moieties, and for two platinahelicenes. The agreement with experimental data is satisfactory. The calculations reproduce the signs and order of magnitude of g lum , and the large variations of phosphorescence lifetimes among the systems. The electron spin contribution to the magnetic transition dipole moment is shown to be important in all of the computations.

Abstract
Enantiopure halogenated molecules are of tremendous importance as synthetic intermediates in the construction of pharmaceuticals, fragrances, flavours, natural products, pesticides, and functional materials. Enantioselective halofunctionalizations remain poorly understood and generally applicable procedures are lacking. The applicability of chiral trans-chelating bis(pyridine)iodine(i) complexes in the development of substrate independent, catalytic enantioselective halofunctionalization has been explored herein. Six novel chiral bidentate pyridine donor ligands have been designed, routes for their synthesis developed and their [N–I–N]+-type halogen bond complexes studied by 15N NMR and DFT. The chiral complexes encompassing a halogen bond stabilized iodenium ion are shown to be capable of efficient iodenium transfer to alkenes; however, without enantioselectivity. The lack of stereoselectivity is shown to originate from the availability of multiple ligand conformations of comparable energies and an insufficient steric influence by the chiral ligand. Substrate preorganization by the chiral catalyst appears a necessity for enantioselective halofunctionalization. The enantioselectivity of the iodine(i) transfer process from chiral bis(pyridine)iodine(i) complexes to alkenes is explored.![]()

Abstract
A series of chiral platina[5]helicenes displaying dual luminescence, i.e., fluorescence between 450 and 600 nm and red/NIR phosphorescence between 700 and 900 nm, has been synthesised, characterised and studied by first-principle calculations. This unusual behavior has been attributed to limited electronic interactions between the d orbitals of the metal and the π-orbitals of the organic ligand on the excited-state. Accordingly, the electron richness of the donor group on the helical ligand does not affect the energy of the phosphorescence process but does play a role on its efficiency. Interestingly, near-infrared circularly polarized luminescence can be obtained for the three complexes with dissymmetry factors up to 3 × 10-3 at 750 nm.

Abstract
Typically, the synthesis of phenanthrene-based polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons relies on the Mallory reaction. In this approach, stilbene (PhCH[double bond, length as m-dash]CHPh)-based precursors undergo an oxidative photocyclization reaction to join the two adjacent aromatic rings into an extended aromatic structure. However, if one C[double bond, length as m-dash]C carbon atom is replaced by a nitrogen atom (C[double bond, length as m-dash]N), the synthesis becomes practically infeasible. Here, we show the very first examples of a successful Mallory reaction on stilbene-like imine precursors involving the molecularly curved corannulene nucleus. The isolated yields exceed 90% and the resulting single and double aza[4]helicenes exhibit adjustable high affinity for electrons.

Abstract
Introducing one or two alkynyl-iron moieties onto a carbo[6]helicene results in organometallic helicenes (2 a,b) that display strong chiroptical activity combined with efficient redox-triggered switching. The neutral and oxidized forms have been studied in detail by electronic and vibrational circular dichroism, as well as by Raman optical activity (ROA) spectroscopy. The experimental results were analyzed and spectra were assigned with the help of first-principles calculations. In particular, a recently developed method for ROA calculations under resonance conditions has been used to study the intricate resonance effects on the ROA spectrum of mono-iron ethynylhelicene 2 a.

Abstract
Four members of a new class of cycloborylated hexa-, octa-, and deca-helicenes (1 a-d) have been prepared in enantiopure form, along with two cycloplatinated deca-helicenes (1 d', 1 d1 ), further extending the family of cycloplatinated hexa- and octa-helicenes reported previously. The azabora[n]helicenes display intense electronic circular dichroism and large optical rotations; the dependence of the optical activity on the size of the helix (n=6, 8, 10) and the number of boron atoms (1 or 2) has been examined in detail both experimentally and theoretically. The photophysical properties (nonpolarized and circularly polarized luminescence) of these new fluorescent organic helicenes have been measured and compared with the corresponding organometallic phosphorescent cycloplatinated derivatives (1 a1 -d1 ).

Abstract
A convergent synthesis of racemic [6]hexahelicene-7-carboxylic acid by cross-coupling of a bicyclic and a tricyclic component is described. A metal-catalyzed ring-closure is also a fundamental component of the synthetic approach. Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) measurements of the racemate self-assembled on Au(111) at liquid-solid interface revealed the formation of ordered racemic 2D crystals.

Abstract
The reaction of 3-perylenylmethylen-4'-ethylaniline () with [Pt2Me4(μ-SMe2)2] (and subsequent addition of PPh3) or with [Pt2(η(3)-C4H7)2(μ-Cl)2] produced cyclometallated Pt(II) complexes [Pt(C^N)Me(PPh3)] () and, respectively, [Pt2(C^N)2(μ-Cl)2] () (HC^N = 3-C20H11CH[double bond, length as m-dash]NC6H4-p-C2H5), with Pt bound to the ortho site of the perylenyl fragment. From the mononuclear complexes [Pt(C^N)L2] (L2 = acac (); S2COMe (); S2CNEt2 () are easily formed. Oxidative addition of methyl iodide to the square-planar Pt(II) complexes , , and gave the corresponding cyclometallated Pt(IV) compounds [Pt(C^N)L2MeI] , and . The X-ray structures of , , and show that the perylenyl fragment remains essentially flat in and and slightly twisted in . Comparison of the optical properties of these Pt(II) complexes with those reported for similar Pd(II) derivatives reveals that the change of metal exerts a notable influence on the UV-vis spectra. In solution at room temperature, all the Pt complexes exhibit fluorescence associated with the perylene fragment with low emission quantum yields for the Pt(II) complexes (<1%) and remarkably higher emission values for the Pt(IV) complexes: up to 29%, with emission lifetimes of 1-5 ns. Time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations were performed on the perylene imine and on representative complexes [M(C^N)(acac)] (M = Pd, Pt) and [Pt(C^N)(acac)MeI] to analyse the absorption spectra. These calculations support a perylene-dominated intraligand π-π*emissive state based on the HOMO and LUMO orbitals of the perylene chromophore, and a ligand-to-ligand charge-transfer (more intense for the Pt(II) complex) that explains the observed influence of the metal on the absorption properties.

Abstract
Electronic circular dichroism and circularly polarized luminescence acid/base switching activity has been demonstrated in helicene-bipyridine proligand 1 a and in its "rollover" cycloplatinated derivative 2 a. Whereas proligand 1 a displays a strong bathochromic shift (>160 nm) of the nonpolarized and circularly polarized luminescence upon protonation, complex 2 a displays slightly stronger emission. This strikingly different behavior between singlet emission in the organic helicene and triplet emission in the organometallic derivative has been rationalized by using quantum-chemical calculations. The very large bathochromic shift of the emission observed upon protonation of azahelicene-bipyridine 1 a has been attributed to the decrease in aromaticity (promoting a charge-transfer-type transition rather than a π-π* transition) as well as an increase in the HOMO-LUMO character of the transition and stabilization of the LUMO level upon protonation.

Abstract
The synthesis, structure, electrochemistry, and photophysical properties of a series of heteroleptic tris- cyclometalated Pt(IV) complexes are reported. The complexes mer-[Pt(C^N)2 (C'^N')]OTf, with C^N=C-deprotonated 2-(2,4-difluorophenyl)pyridine (dfppy) or 2-phenylpyridine (ppy), and C'^N'=C-deprotonated 2-(2-thienyl)pyridine (thpy) or 1-phenylisoquinoline (piq), were obtained by reacting bis- cyclometalated precursors [Pt(C^N)2 Cl2] with AgOTf (2 equiv) and an excess of the N'^C'H pro-ligand. The complex mer-[Pt(dfppy)2 (ppy)]OTf was obtained analogously and photoisomerized to its fac counterpart. The new complexes display long-lived luminescence at room temperature in the blue to orange color range. The emitting states involve electronic transitions almost exclusively localized on the ligand with the lowest π-π* energy gap and have very little metal character. DFT and time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) calculations on mer-[Pt(ppy)2 (C'^N')](+) (C'^N'=thpy, piq) and mer/fac-[Pt(ppy)3](+) support this assignment and provide a basis for the understanding of the luminescence of tris-cyclometalated Pt(IV) complexes. Excited states of LMCT character may become thermally accessible from the emitting state in the mer isomers containing dfppy or ppy as chromophoric ligands, leading to strong nonradiative deactivation. This effect does not operate in the fac isomers or the mer complexes containing thpy or piq, for which nonradiative deactivation originates mainly from vibrational coupling to the ground state.

Abstract
Enantiopure mono-cycloplatinated-[8]helicene and bis-cycloplatinated-[6]helicene derivatives were prepared through column chromatography combined with crystallization of diastereomeric complexes using a chiral ancillary sulfoxide ligand. The UV-visible spectra, circular dichroism, molar rotations, and (circularly polarized) luminescence activity of these new helical complexes have been examined in detail and analysed with the help of first-principles quantum-chemical calculations.

Abstract
Tris-cyclometalated Pt(IV) complexes are reported for the first time. The facial isomers exhibit long-lived 3LC emissions with quantum yields up to 0.49, the highest ever found for Pt(IV) complexes, combined with a strong oxidizing character in the excited state.

Abstract
Homochiral and heterochiral cis-bis-cycloplatinated-[6]helicene derivatives 1b(1,2), as representative examples of platina[6]helicenes that share a common platinum center, have been prepared. A diastereo- and enantioselective synthesis, which combines CH activation and dynamic isomerization from heterochiral structure 1b(2) into homochiral structure 1b(1), is also described. Overall, this isomerization process results in the transfer of chiral information from one helicene moiety to the other one. The chiroptical properties of homochiral (P)- and (M)-1b(1) were greatly modified upon oxidation into their corresponding (P)- and (M)-diiodo-Pt(IV) complexes (5). The changes were also analyzed by performing theoretical calculations. C-H activation in the synthesis of organometallic helicenes is further demonstrated by the preparation of cis-bis-cycloplatinated-[8]helicene 1c.
