CH/π-Interaction-Guided Self-Assembly in π-Conjugated Oligomers

Photoactive metal-organic framework as a bifunctional material for 4-hydroxy-4'-nitrobiphenyl detection and photodegradation of methylene blue

Environmental pollution resulting from organic pollutants is becoming an overwhelming problem throughout the world, and how to efficiently detect or eliminate these organic pollutants remains an important issue for environmental protection. Herein, a cadmium(ii)-based MOF, Cd-TCAA, was successfully prepared by the hydrothermal reaction of 4,4',4''-tricarboxyltriphenylamine (H3tca), (E)-1,2-di(pyridin-4-yl)diazene (abp) and cadmium nitrate. Because the H3tca moiety is a typically versatile functional material that exhibits good hole-transporting capabilities, efficient light harvesting, and excellent electron-donating properties, this novel photoactive metal-organic framework operates as a bifunctional material for the detection and degradation of organic pollutants. It exhibits excellent selectivity and sensitivity towards 4-hydroxy-4'-nitrobiphenyl (HNBP) with a detection limit of 50 nM in solution, and represents the first example of a MOF-based sensor for the detection of HNBP. The photocatalytic activity of Cd-TCAA was also determined by investigating the photo-induced degradation of methylene blue (MB). Cd-TCAA has the advantages of excellent catalytic activity, stability, and recyclability.

A series of 4,5,9,10-tetrahydropyrene-based tetraarylethenes: synthesis, structures and solid-state emission behavior

By controlling the number of 4,5,9,10-tetrahydropyrene segments around the tetraarylethene core, a series of 4,5,9,10-tetrahydropyrene-based tetraarylethenes were synthesized and structurally characterized. An aggregation-induced emission (AIE) study indicated that all the compounds are AIE active: they are weak emitters in good solvents but highly emissive in the condensed phase, and hence are potential solid-state emitters. Their optical properties, electrochemical properties and theoretical calculations were investigated, and the results prove that the π-conjugation degree of these compounds increases with the increasing number of 4,5,9,10-tetrahydropyrene units. However, the fluorescence quantum yield in the solid state doesn't increase with increasing π-conjugation. We studied the reason for this by analyzing the crystal structures of some compounds, and proposed that the close degree of molecular packing in the solid state may be responsible for it. Loose packing of tetraarylethenes in the solid state can restrict the rotation of the aromatic rings but cannot constrain other non-radiative pathways efficiently, such as vibration, which leads to the unpredictable emission of the compounds.

Tetraarylethenes with different π-conjugation degrees can be realized by controlling the number of 4,5,9,10-tetrahydropyrene segments. However, the fluorescence quantum yield of these compounds in films doesn't increase with the π-conjugation degree.

From Weakness to Strength: C-H/π-Interaction-Guided Self-Assembly and Gelation of Poly(benzyl ether) Dendrimers

The C-H/π interactions as the key driving force for the construction of supramolecular gels remain a great challenge because of their weak nature. We hereby employed for the first time weak C-H/π interactions for the construction of supramolecular dendritic gels based on peripherally methyl-functionalized poly(benzyl ether) dendrimers. Their gelation property is highly dependent on the nature of the peripheral methyl groups. Furthermore, single-crystal X-ray analysis and NMR spectroscopy revealed that multiple C-H/π interactions between the proton of the methyl group and the electron-rich peripheral methyl-substituted aryl ring played significant roles in the formation of supramolecular nanofibers and organogels. This study uncovers the critical role of weak noncovalent interactions and provides new insights into the further design of self-assembled nanomaterials.

π-Conjugated polymer anisotropic organogel nanofibrous assemblies for thermoresponsive photonic switches

The present work demonstrates one of the first examples of π-conjugated photonic switches (or photonic wave plates) based on the tailor-made π-conjugated polymer anisotropic organogel. New semicrystalline segmented π-conjugated polymers are designed with rigid aromatic oligophenylenevinylene π-core and flexible alkyl chain along the polymer backbone. These polymers are found to be self-assembled as semicrystalline or amorphous with respect to the number of carbon atoms in the alkyl units. These semicrystalline polymers produce organogels having nanofibrous morphology of 20 nm thickness with length up to 5 μm. The polymer organogel is aligned in a narrow glass capillary, and this anisotropic gel device is further demonstrated as photonic switches. The glass capillary device behaves as typical λ/4 photonic wave plates upon the illumination of the plane polarized light. The λ/4 photonic switching ability is found to be maximum at θ = 45° angle under the cross polarizers. The orthogonal arrangements of the gel capillaries produce dark and bright spots as on-and-off optical switches. Thermoreversibility of the polymer organogel (also its xerogel) was exploited to construct thermoresponsive photonic switches for the temperature window starting from 25 to 160 °C. The organic photonic switch concept can be adapted to large number of other π-conjugated materials for optical communication and storage.

Solid state assemblies and photophysical characteristics of linear and bent-core π-conjugated oligophenylenevinylenes

New classes of luminescent linear, bent-core, and star-shaped oligophenylenevinylenes (OPVs) having 1,4-para and 1,3-meta rigid aromatic cores were designed and developed. 3-Pentadecylphenol, a renewable resource molecule, was chosen as the flexible unit at the longitudinal or middle position of the OPV aromatic core for solid state ordering. Depending upon the nature of the π-core, the OPVs exhibited either mosaic-type liquid crystalline textures or spherulitic crystalline solids. The enthalpies of melting transitions revealed that the bent-core OPV structure showed enhanced solid state packing compared to linear or star-shaped OPVs. Small and wide-angle X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed layered-like assemblies in OPV molecules. Photophysical experiments such as excitation, emission, and time-resolved fluorescence decay dynamics were carried out to trace the molecular self-organization of OPV chromophores. Time correlated single photon counting technique (TCSPC) luminescent decay profiles and decay lifetimes (τ1 and τ2 values) revealed that the OPV chromophores showed faster exciton decay in the tightly packed bent-core structure. The weakly packed star-shaped OPV showed enhanced excited state luminescence stability up to 10 ns. A direct correlation between the OPV chemical structure, solid state ordering, and photophysical characteristics was established.
