Abstract
A far-red absorbing sensitizer, BF2 -chelated azadipyrromethane (azaBODIPY) has been employed as an electron acceptor to synthesize a series of push-pull systems linked with different nitrogenous electron donors, viz., N,N-dimethylaniline (NND), triphenylamine (TPA), and phenothiazine (PTZ) via an acetylene linker. The structural integrity of the newly synthesized push-pull systems was established by spectroscopic, electrochemical, spectroelectrochemical, and DFT computational methods. Cyclic and differential pulse voltammetry studies revealed different redox states and helped in the estimation of the energies of the charge-separated states. Further, spectroelectrochemical studies performed in a thin-layer optical cell revealed diagnostic peaks of azaBODIPY⋅- in the visible and near-IR regions. Free-energy calculations revealed the charge separation from one of the covalently linked donors to the 1 azaBODIPY* to yield Donor⋅+ -azaBODIPY⋅- to be energetically favorable in a polar solvent, benzonitrile, and the frontier orbitals generated on the optimized structures helped in assessing such a conclusion. Consequently, the steady-state emission studies revealed quenching of the azaBODIPY fluorescence in all of the investigated push-pull systems in benzonitrile and to a lesser extent in mildly polar dichlorobenzene, and nonpolar toluene. The femtosecond pump-probe studies revealed the occurrence of excited charge transfer (CT) in nonpolar toluene while a complete charge separation (CS) for all three push-pull systems in polar benzonitrile. The CT/CS products populated the low-lying 3 azaBODIPY* prior to returning to the ground state. Global target (GloTarAn) analysis of the transient data revealed the lifetime of the final charge-separated states (CSS) to be 195 ps for NND-derived, 50 ps for TPA-derived, and 85 ps for PTZ-derived push-pull systems in benzonitrile.

Abstract
Photochromic fluorescent molecules dramatically extend their fields of applications ranging from optical memories, bioimaging, photoswitches, photonic devices, anti-counterfeiting technology and many more. Here, we have logically designed and synthesized a triazole appended bis-(dithienylethene)-naphthalenediimide based photo-responsive material, 5, which demonstrated fluorescence enhancement property upon photocyclization (ΦF =0.42), with high photocyclization (44 s, ksolution =0.0355 s-1 , ksolid =0.0135 s-1 ) and photocycloreversion (160 s, ksolution =0.0181 s-1 , ksolid =0.0085 s-1 ) rate and decent photoreaction quantum yield (Φo→c =0.93 and Φc→o =0.11). The open isomer almost converted to the closed isomer at photo-stationary state (PSS) with distinct color change from colorless to blue with 92.85 % conversion yield. A reversible noninvasive modulation of fluorescence through efficient photoinduced electron transfer (PET) process was observed both in solution as well as in solid state. The fluorescence modulation through PET process was further corroborated with thermodynamic calculations using the Rehm-Weller equation and quantum chemical studies (DFT). The thermally stable compound 5 exhibits high fatigue resistance property (up to 50 cycles) both in solution and solid state. Furthermore, the compound 5 was successfully applied as erasable ink and in deciphering secret codes (Quick Response/bar code) portending potential promising application in anti-counterfeiting.

Abstract
Weakening the triplet-triplet annihilation (TTA) self-quenching effect induced by sensitizers remains a tremendous challenge due to the very few investigations carried out on them. Herein, benzo-21-crown-7 (B21C7)-functionalized 2,6-diiodo-1,3,5,7-tetramethyl-8-phenyl-4,4-difluoroboradiazaindacene (DIBDP) was synthesized to investigate the influences of huge bulks and electron-rich cavities of B21C7 moieties on the fluorescence emission and triplet-state lifetimes of DIBDP moieties. Density functional theory (DFT)/time-dependent DFT (TDDFT) computable results preliminarily predicted that B21C7 moieties had influences on the fluorescence emissions of DIBDP moieties but not on their localization of triplet states of B21C7-functionalized DIBDP (B21C7-DIBDP). The UV-vis absorption spectra, fluorescence emission spectra, and cyclic voltammograms verified that there was an electron-transfer process from the B21C7 moiety to the DIBDP moiety in B21C7-DIBDP. However, the calculated results of ΔG CS and E CS values and nanosecond time-resolved transient absorption spectra demonstrated that the electron-transfer process from the B21C7 moiety to the DIBDP moiety in B21C7-DIBDP had direct influences on the fluorescence emission of DIBDP moieties but not on the triplet states of DIBDP moieties. The experimental values of triplet-state lifetimes of B21C7-DIBDP were obviously longer than those of DIBDP at a high concentration (1.0 × 10-5 M); however, the fitted values of intrinsic triplet-state lifetimes of B21C7-DIBDP were slightly greater than those of DIBDP in the same solvent. These results demonstrated that the steric hindrance of B21C7 moieties could weaken the TTA self-quenching effect of DIBDP moieties at a high concentration and the a-PET effect induced a proportion of the produced singlet states of DIBDP moieties and could not emit fluorescence in the form of radiation transition but they could be transformed into triplet states through intersystem crossing (ISC) processes due to the iodine atoms in the DIBDP moiety. The stronger a-PET effects in polar solvents induced smaller fluorescence quantum yields so that more singlet states of DIBDP moieties were transformed into triplet states to weaken the TTA self-quenching effects.

Abstract
The triplet-triplet annihilation (TTA) effect of sensitizers themselves can lead to the additional quenching of lifetimes of triplet states; therefore, how to weaken the TTA effect of sensitizers is an urgent issue to be resolved for their further applications. Besides, it remains a tremendous challenge for constructing supramolecular systems of photosensitizers based on photosensitizer-functionalized pillararenes because there have been very few investigations on them. Thus, 2,6-diiodo-1,3,5,7-tetramethyl-8-phenyl-4,4-difluoroboradiazaindacene (DIBDP) and ethoxy pillar[5]arene (EtP5) were utilized to synthesize a DIBDP-functionalized pillar[5]arene (EtP5-DIBDP), a cyano-containing DIBDP (G) used as a guest molecule was also prepared, and they were used to investigate the electron-transfer mechanism between EtP5 and DIBDP moieties and weaken the TTA effect of DIBDP moieties. The theoretical computational results of frontier molecular orbitals and isosurfaces of spin density preliminarily predicted that the cavities of the EtP5 moiety had influence on the fluorescence emission of DIBDP units but not on their triplet states in EtP5-DIBDP. The fluorescence emission intensities in a variety of solvents with different polarities and electrochemical studies revealed that there was electron transfer from EtP5 to the DIBDP units, and the electron-transfer process had influence on the fluorescence emission but not on the triplet states of DIBDP moieties in EtP5-DIBDP, which verified the results of density functional theory calculations. The triplet state lifetimes of EtP5-DIBDP were longer than those of DIBDP and G and the photooxidation abilities of EtP5-DIBDP were better than those of DIBDP and G at a high concentration (1.0 × 10-5 M) in various solvents; in contrast, the intrinsic triplet state lifetimes and singlet oxygen quantum yields (ΦΔ) of DIBDP, G, and EtP5-DIBDP were very similar. This was because the steric hindrance of EtP5 moieties could weaken the TTA effect of DIBDP moieties without influencing their intrinsic triplet state lifetimes in EtP5-DIBDP.

Abstract
The solvent effect usually plays an important role in triplet-triplet annihilation (TTA) upconversion processes. In this work, we have studied the TTA upconversion kinetics of perylene with Bodipy-phenyl-C60 as the triplet photosensitizer in five solvents, 1,4-dioxane, dichlorobenzene, chlorobenzene, toluene, and tetrahydrofuran (THF). Although no significant solvent effect was observed in steady-state absorption and fluorescence emission spectra, the overall TTA upconversion quantum yields showed a profound dependence on solvent properties, i.e. 4.9% in 1,4-dioxane, 7.1% in dichlorobenzene, 6.7% in chlorobenzene, 4.6% in toluene, and 2.2% in THF (the maximum of 50%). Each elementary reaction step involved in the overall process was analyzed by applying femtosecond and nanosecond time-resolved transient absorption spectroscopy, revealing that the fluorescence emission of perylene was more significantly affected by the solvents in contrast to the other steps. Moreover, an extra intramolecular energy-transfer pathway of Bodipy-phenyl-C60 was found via the formation of charge-separated states in dichlorobenzene, chlorobenzene, and THF solvents, once being excited. These conclusions provide valuable clues to choose the most favorable solvent for the higher TTA upconversion efficiency in related applications.

Abstract
Developing broadband and strong visible-light-absorbing photosensitizer is highly desired for dramatically improving the utilization of solar energy and boosting artificial photosynthesis. Herein, we develop a facile strategy to co-sensitize Ir-complex with Coumarins and boron dipyrromethene to explore photosensitizer with a broadband covering ca. 50% visible light region (Ir-4). This type of photosensitizer is firstly introduced into water splitting system, exhibiting significantly enhanced performance with over 21 times higher than that of typical Ir(ppy)2(bpy)+, and the turnover number towards Ir-4 reaches to 115840, representing the most active sensitizer among reported molecular photocatalytic systems. Experimental and theoretical investigations reveal that the Ir-mediation not only achieves a long-lived boron dipyrromethene-localized triplet state, but also makes an efficient excitation energy transfer from Coumarin to boron dipyrromethene to trigger the electron transfer. These findings provide an insight for developing broadband and strong visible-light-absorbing multicomponent arrays on molecular level for efficient artificial photosynthesis.

Abstract
Using naphthalimide (NI), complexes (Pt-PhNI and Pt-PhMeNI) based on the N^N platinum(II) bis(phenylacetylide) coordination framework were prepared, in which there are two close-lying triplet states, i.e., the metal-to-ligand-charge-transfer (3MLCT) and the NI localized emissive state (3LE). Pt-PhNI has better electronic communication between the Pt coordination center and the NI moiety, whereas in Pt-PhMeNI, they are more isolated by orthogonal geometry. For Pt-PhMeNI, the S0 → 1MLCT and S0 → 1LE absorption bands are separated by 5655 cm-1, while they are more overlapped in Pt-PhNI. The 3MLCT → S0 and 3LE → S0 dual phosphorescence emissions were observed for both Pt-PhNI (in toluene) and Pt-PhMeNI (in benzonitrile). The molecular conformation tunes the 3MLCT/3LE state population ratio, and the orthogonal geometry makes the 3LE state in Pt-PhMeNI basically a dark state (in toluene). Switching of the relative energy levels of the 3MLCT/3LE states by variation of the solvent polarity and temperature was achieved. For Pt-PhMeNI, the energy level of 3MLCT state is higher in a polar solvent; thus, the 3MLCT emission decreases, while the phosphorescence lifetime is prolonged from 9.5 μs (in toluene) to 58 μs (in benzonitrile) because of the different equilibria with the nonemissive 3LE state. Conversely, increasing the temperature enhances the upward transition from the nonemissive 3LE state to the emissive 3MLCT state; as such, the phosphorescence of Pt-PhMeNI was intensified at higher temperature (which is unusual), and the phosphorescence lifetime decreased from 58 μs (298 K) to ca. 5 μs (348 K). The ultrafast intersystem crossing (ca. 0.5 ps) and intramolecular triplet-triplet energy transfer (3-11 ps) were studied by femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy. These results are useful for an in-depth understanding of the photophysics of multichromophore transition-metal complexes and for the design of external stimuli-responsive sensing materials, for instance, temperature or microenvironment sensing materials.

Abstract
A compact naphthalenediimide (NDI)-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidinyloxy (TEMPO) dyad has been prepared with the aim of studying radical-enhanced intersystem crossing (EISC) and the formation of high spin states as well as electron spin polarization (ESP) dynamics. Compared with the previously reported radical-chromophore dyads, the present system shows a very high triplet state quantum yield (ΦT =74 %), a long-lived triplet state (τT =8.7 μs), fast EISC (1/kEISC =338 ps), and absorption in the red spectral region. Time-resolved electron paramagnetic resonance (TREPR) spectroscopy showed that, upon photoexcitation in fluid solution at room temperature, the D0 state of the TEMPO moiety produces strong emissive (E) polarization owing to the quenching of the excited singlet state of NDI by the radical moiety (electron exchange J>0). The emissive polarization then inverts into absorptive (A) polarization within about 3 μs, and then relaxes to a thermal equilibrium while quenching the triplet state of NDI. The formation and decay of the quartet state were also observed. The dyad was used as a three-spin triplet photosensitizer for triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion (quantum yield ΦUC =2.6 %). Remarkably, when encapsulated into liposomes, the red-light-absorbing dyad-liposomes show good biocompatibility and excellent photodynamic therapy efficiency (phototoxicity EC50 =3.22 μm), and therefore is a promising candidate for future less toxic and multifunctional photodynamic therapeutic reagents.

Abstract
A boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY) featuring triphenylamine triad, BD, has been synthesized as a co-sensitizer in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs). The optical and electrochemical properties of BD have been characterized using UV-vis spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. DSCs containing co-sensitizers, N719 and BD, have been prepared in two procedures using co-deposition and stepwise deposition. The influences of the staining processes, co-deposition and stepwise deposition on dye loading, dye dispersion on a TiO2 photoanode and DSC performance have been investigated using FTIR, SEM-EDS, I–V test and IPCE measurement, respectively. We found that stepwise co-sensitization provided higher solar cell efficiency, compared to those stained with a co-deposition method. N719/5% BD showed the highest power conversion efficiency of 5.14%. Interestingly, the enhanced device efficiency was 66% higher than that of a device containing the single N719 dye. BODIPY triad, BD, was prepared as co-sensitizer. The stepwise sensitization method exhibited higher PCE, compared to the co-deposition method.![]()

Abstract
The azaBODIPYs containing one and two formyl functional groups on the 1,7-aryl groups present at the azaBODIPY core were synthesized over sequence of steps and characterized by mass, NMR, absorption, and electrochemical techniques. The monoformylated and diformylated azaBODIPYs are very useful synthons to prepare a wide variety of new fluorescent compounds. The mono- and diformylated azaBODIPYs were treated with pyrrole under mild acidic conditions followed by column chromatographic purification to afford azaBODIPYs appended with one and two dipyrromethanyl groups. The dipyrramethanyl groups of azaBODIPYs were oxidized with DDQ and complexed with BF3·Et2O to obtain covalently linked azaBODIPY-BODIPY dyads and azaBODIPY-(BODIPY)2 triads. The dyads and triads were characterized in detail by HR-MS, 1D and 2D NMR, absorption, fluorescence, and electrochemical techniques and the structure of one of the triads was deduced by X-ray crystallography. The crystal structure of azaBODIPY-(BODIPY)2 triad revealed that the two BODIPY units were in perpendicular orientation with azaBODIPY unit. The absorption and electrochemical studies indicated a weak interaction among the BODIPY and azaBODIPY moieties and the moieties retain their independent characteristic features in dyads and triads. The preliminary fluorescence studies supported an efficient energy transfer from BODIPY unit(s) to azaBODIPY unit in dyads and triads.

Abstract
The excitation energy transfer (EET) allowing the concentration of the energy has been investigated in several multi-BODIPY architectures with the help of an approach coupling time dependent density functional theory to an implicit solvation scheme, the polarizable continuum model. We have first considered several strategies to compute the electronic coupling in a dyad varying the size of the donor/acceptor units, the bridge, the geometries and conformations. We have next studied the electronic coupling in three different architectures for which the EET rate constants have been experimentally measured both from luminescence and transient absorption data and from Förster theory. A good agreement with experimental values was obtained. Finally, in an effort to further improve these systems, we have designed several series of BODIPY triads, investigating the effect of acidochromism, core modifications, the position of the linkage and chemical substitutions on the EET coupling and rate constant. We show that several architectures allow us to increase the EET rate by one order of magnitude compared to the original compound.

Abstract
A molecular pentad, comprised of zinc phthalocyanine ( ZnPc ) with four boron dipyrromethene units (BODIPY) have been examined by femtosecond and nanosecond laser flash photolysis to explore its photoinduced intramolecular events from the excited BODIPY. The geometry optimization showed that the phthalocyanine moiety is completely symmetric and form perfect square planar complex with zinc. The absorption spectrum of ZnPc -BODIPY pentad covers most of the visible region (ca. 300–750 nm), which clearly is an advantage for capturing solar energy. The excitation transfer from the singlet BODIPY to ZnPc is envisioned due to good spectral overlap of the BODIPY emission and ZnPc absorption spectra. Femtosecond laser flash photolysis studies provided concrete evidence for the occurrence of energy transfer from the singlet excited BODIPY to ZnPc in tetrahydrofuran. The kinetic study of energy transfer measured by monitoring the decay of the BODIPY emission revealed fast energy transfer (5.90 × 1010 s-1) in the molecular pentad. Since the electron transfer from the singlet ZnPc to BODIPY is thermodynamically not feasible, the singlet ZnPc decayed to populates the triplet ZnPc , in addition to the grounds state. These findings suggest the potential of the examined ZnPc -BODIPY pentad to be efficient photosynthetic antenna in the artificial photosynthetic systems.

Abstract
Rhodamine-bromonaphthaleneimide (RB-NI) and rhodamine-bromonaphthalenediimide (RB-NDI) dyads were prepared for switching of the triplet excited states. Bromo-NI or bromo-NDI parts in the dyads are the spin converters, i.e., the triplet state producing modules, whereas the RB unit is the acid-activatable electron donor/energy acceptor. NI and NDI absorb at 359 and 541 nm, and the T1 state energy levels are 2.25 and 1.64 eV, respectively. RB undertakes the reversible spirolactam (RB-c) ↔ opened amide (RB-o) transformation. RB-c shows no visible light absorption, and the triplet-state energy level is ET1 = 3.36 eV. Conversely RB-o shows strong absorption at 557 nm, and ET1 is 1.73 eV. Thus, the acid-activated fluorescence-resonance-energy-transfer (FRET) competes with the ISC of NI or NDI. No triplet state was observed for the dyads with nanosecond time-resolved transient absorption spectroscopy. Upon addition of acid, strong fluorescence and long-living triplet excited states were observed. Thus, the producing of triplet state is acid-activatable. The triplet state of RB-NI is localized on RB-o part, whereas in RB-NDI the triplet state is delocalized on both the NDI and RB-o units. The ISC of spin converter was not outcompeted by RET. These studies are useful for switching of triplet excited state.

Abstract
Dithienylethene (DTE)-2,6-diiodoBodipy triads were prepared with the aim to photoswitch the triplet excited state of the 2,6-diiodoBodipy moiety. Bodipy was selected due to its low T1 state energy level to avoid sensitized photocyclization of DTE, which is very often encountered in DTE photoswitches, so that the photochemistry of DTE and the organic chromophore can be addressed independently. This is the first time that DTE was covalently connected with an organic triplet photosensitizer. For the triad with DTE-o structure, selective photoexcitation into the diiodoBodipy part did not initiate photocyclization of DTE-o. Upon photoirradiation at 254 nm, thus the DTE-o → DTE-c transformation, the intersystem crossing (ISC) of 2,6-diiodoBodipy moiety was competed by the photoactivated resonance energy transfer (RET), with Bodipy as the intramolecular energy donor and DTE-c as energy acceptor. The fluorescence of Bodipy was quenched and the triplet state lifetime of Bodipy was reduced from 105.1 to 40.9 μs. The photoreversion is O2-independent, but can be greatly accelerated upon selective photoexcitation into the diiodoBodipy absorption band (at 535 nm). We concluded that ISC is not outcompeted by RET. The photoswitching of the triplet state was transduced to the singlet oxygen photosensitizing, as well as triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion.

Abstract
IodoBodipy-styrylBodipy dyads triplet photosensitizers were prepared (B-1 and B-2) which contain acid-responsive moiety. Both compounds show broadband visible light absorption, due to the resonance energy transfer (RET) between the two different visible light-harvesting Bodipy units. The photophysical properties of the dyads were studied with steady-state and nanosecond time-resolved transient absorption spectroscopy. The production of triplet excited state is switched ON or OFF by protonation/deprotonation of the amino group in the dyads. In the neutral form, the excited state is short-lived (<10 ns) and no singlet oxygen ((1)O2) photosensitizing was observed. Upon protonation, a long-lived triplet excited state was observed (τT = 3.1 μs) and the (1)O2 quantum yield (ΦΔ) is up to 73.8%. The energy levels of the components of the dyads were changed upon protonation and this energy level tuning exerts significant influence on the triplet state property of the dyad. Acid-activated shuffling of the localization of the triplet excited state between two components of a dyad was observed. Furthermore, we observed a rare example that a chromophore giving shorter absorption wavelength is acting as the singlet energy acceptor in RET. The experimental results were rationalized by density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TDDFT) calculations.

Abstract
This review article presents the most recent developments in the use of materials based on dipyrromethene (DPM) and azadipyrromethenes (ADPM) for organic photovoltaic (OPV) applications. These chromophores and their corresponding BF2-chelated derivatives BODIPY and aza-BODIPY, respectively, are well known for fluorescence-based applications but are relatively new in the field of photovoltaic research. This review examines the variety of relevant designs, synthetic methodologies and photophysical studies related to materials that incorporate these porphyrinoid-related dyes in their architecture. The main idea is to inspire readers to explore new avenues in the design of next generation small-molecule and bulk-heterojunction solar cell (BHJSC) OPV materials based on DPM chromophores. The main concepts are briefly explained, along with the main challenges that are to be resolved in order to take full advantage of solar energy.
