Abstract
The development of catalysts for environmentally benign organic transformations is a very active area of research. Most of the catalysts reported so far are based on transition-metal complexes. In recent years, examples of catalysis by main-group metal compounds have been reported. Herein, we report a series of magnesium pincer complexes, which were characterized by NMR and X-ray single-crystal diffraction. Reversible activation of H2 via aromatization/dearomatization metal-ligand cooperation was studied. Utilizing the obtained complexes, the unprecedented homogeneous main-group metal catalyzed semihydrogenation of alkynes and hydrogenation of alkenes were demonstrated under base-free conditions, affording Z-alkenes and alkanes as products, respectively, with excellent yields and selectivities. Control experiments and DFT studies reveal the involvement of metal-ligand cooperation in the hydrogenation reactions. This study not only provides a new approach for the semihydrogenation of alkynes and hydrogenation of alkenes catalyzed by magnesium but also offers opportunities for the hydrogenation of other compounds catalyzed by main-group metal complexes.

Abstract
Two zwitterionic calcium complexes L1CaN(SiMe3)2(THF) (1) and L2CaN(SiMe3)2 (2) via protolysis reaction were synthesized. At −75 °C, 1 gave a heterotactic sequence enriched polylactide, whilst 2 produced an isotactic sequence enriched polymer.

Abstract
The synthesis and structural features of several families of unsolvated molecular complexes of the heavy alkaline earths (Ae = calcium, strontium and barium) supported by bis(phenolate)s or bis(fluoroalkoxide)s are described. These dianionic, multidentate ligands are built around diaza-macrocycles that contain either five or six N- and O-heteroatoms. Several of these complexes have been characterised by X-ray diffraction crystallography. A list of comparative features was drawn upon close examination of the molecular structures of these complexes. It highlights the subtle influences of the identity of the central Ae metal, denticity and nature -fluoroalkoxide vs. phenolate- of the anionic tethers in the ligands. All complexes are seven- or eight-coordinate. It is observed in particular that a decrease of the number of heteroatoms in the macrocyclic backbone of the ligand will be compensated by the establishment of intramolecular AeF interactions (accounting for ca. 3.8-6.4% of the pertaining coordination spheres according to bond valence sum analysis), dimerisation of the complex, or, in one case, solvent (thf) retention. Attempts to gauge the Lewis acidity in these series of complexes were carried out by three independent methods (Childs, Gutmann-Beckett and global electrophilicity index). However, conflicting results were obtained and no clear trend can be delineated, even if on the whole, these measurements concur to suggest relatively low Lewis acidity.

Abstract
Alkaline earth (Ae) metal complexes of the aminophosphine borane ligand are highly active and iso-selective catalysts for the ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of rac-lactide (LA). The polymerization reactions are well controlled and produce polylactides with molecular weights that are precise and narrowly distributed. Kinetic studies reveal that the ROP of rac-LA catalyzed by all Ae metal complexes had a first-order dependency on LA concentration as well as catalyst concentration. A plausible reaction mechanism for Ae metal complex-mediated ROP of rac-LA is discussed, based on controlled kinetic experiments and molecular chain mobility.

Abstract
A series of amidine ligands RAmDIPP (R is backbone substituent, R = 2-methylpyridine (HL1), N,N,2-trimethylaniline (HL2), N,N-dimethylpropan-1-amine (HL3); DIPP (2,6-diisopropylphenyl) is N substituent) and a (Z)-1,1-diethyl-2,3-bis(2-methoxyphenyl)guanidine ligand (HL4) have been synthesized. Reaction of HL1-HL4 with Ca[N(SiHMe2)2](THF) or Ca[N(SiMe3)2](THF)2, respectively, afforded complexes 1-8 (1: [L1AmDIPPCa(SiHMe2)2]2, 2: L1AmDIPPCaN(SiMe3)2·(THF)2, 3: L2AmDIPPCaN(SiHMe2)2·(THF)2, 4: L2AmDIPPCaN(SiMe3)2·(THF), 5: L3AmDIPPCaN(SiHMe2)2·(THF)2, 6: L3AmDIPPCaN(SiMe3)2·(THF)2, 7: [L4CaN(SiHMe2)2]2, 8: [L4CaN(SiMe3)2]2). All the complexes were well-defined by NMR spectrum analyses and the molecular structures of 3 and 5-8 were further determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction analyses. In combination with an excess of PhOH as the chain transfer agent, complexes 1-8 catalyzed immortal ring-opening polymerization of rac-lactide in a controlled manner and exhibited moderate catalytic activity at room temperature. Abstract
Heteroleptic bis(silyl)amides of magnesium and calcium [(L)M{N(SiMe3)2}] [M = Mg, Ca; LH = 1,4,7-trimethyl-1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane; (Me3TACD)H] were previously synthesized from LH and [M{N(SiMe3)2}2]. Strontium bis(silyl)amides [Sr{N(SiMe3)2}2(thf)2] and [Sr{N(SiHMe2)2}2(thf)2/3] reacted with LH to give different types of products, depending on the presence of the β-SiH function. While the former underwent protonolysis to give the amido-bridged dimer [(L)Sr{N(SiMe3)2}]2 (1), the latter gave the adduct [(LH)Sr{N(SiHMe2)2}2] (2) as a stable solid. 2 slowly underwent an intramolecular Si-H/H-N dehydrocoupling in solution to give [{(L)SiMe2N(SiHMe2)}Sr{N(SiHMe2)2}] (3) by liberating H2. The results of transamination of 1 with HN(SiHMe2)2 depended on the relative stoichiometric ratio. A 1 : 1 mixture in n-pentane gave [{(L)SiMe2N(SiHMe2)}Sr{N(SiMe3)2}] (4) and H2, while excess HN(SiHMe2)2 gave the adduct 2 under similar conditions. Compounds 2 and 3 exhibit Sr↼H-Si interactions according to X-ray crystallography, NMR, and IR spectroscopy. Lighter congeners of elusive [(L)Sr{N(SiHMe2)2}] were isolable for Mg (5) and Ca (6).

Abstract
The large alkaline earths (Ae), calcium, strontium and barium, have in the past 15 years yielded a brand new generation of heteroleptic molecular catalysts for the production of fine chemicals. However, the integrity of these complexes is often plagued by ligand redistribution equilibria in solution. This personal account retraces the paths followed in our research group towards the design of stable heteroleptic alkalino-earth complexes, including the use of intramolecular noncovalent Ae···H-Si and Ae···F-C interactions. Their implementation as homogenous precatalysts for reactions such as the intramolecular and intermolecular hydroamination and hydrophosphination of activated alkenes, the hydrophosphonylation of ketones, and the dehydrogenative coupling of amines and hydrosilanes that enable the efficient and controlled formations of CP, CN, or SiN σ-bonds, is presented in a synthetic perspective that highlights their overall outstanding catalytic performance.

Abstract
The syntheses of novel Group 5 and Group 6 hydrosilylamido complexes of the type R(ArN[double bond, length as m-dash])M{N((t)Bu)SiMe2-H}X (M = Ta, R = Cp; M = Mo, R = ArN; X = Cl, H, OBn, Me) are described. The various substituents in the X position seem to play the key role in determining the extent of β-agostic interaction with the Si-H bond. The Mo agostic hydrido complex (ArN[double bond, length as m-dash])2Mo{η(3)-N((t)Bu)SiMe2-H}H is a pre-catalyst for the hydrosilylation of carbonyls. The stoichiometric reaction between benzaldehyde and (ArN[double bond, length as m-dash])2Mo{η(3)-N((t)Bu)SiMe2-H}H gives the benzoxy complex (ArN[double bond, length as m-dash])2Mo{N((t)Bu)SiMe2-H}(OBn), which showed a similar catalytic reactivity compared to the parent hydride. Mechanistic studies suggest that a non-hydride mechanism is operative.

Abstract
We report here a series of alkali and alkaline earth metal complexes, each with a bulky iminopyrrolyl ligand [2-(Ph3CN=CH)C4H3NH] (1-H) moiety in their coordination sphere, synthesized using either alkane elimination or silylamine elimination methods or the salt metathesis route. The lithium salt of molecular composition [Li(2-(Ph3CN=CH)C4H3N)(THF)2] (2) was prepared using the alkane elimination method, and the silylamine elimination method was used to synthesize the dimeric sodium and tetra-nuclear potassium salts of composition [(2-(Ph3CN=CH)C4H3N)Na(THF)]2 (3) and [(2-(Ph3CN=CH)C4H3N)K(THF)0.5]4 (4) respectively. The magnesium complex of composition [(THF)2Mg(CH2Ph){2-(Ph3CN=CH)C4H3N}] (5) was synthesized through the alkane elimination method, in which [Mg(CH2Ph)2(OEt2)2] was treated with the bulky iminopyrrole ligand 1-H in 1 : 1 molar ratio, whereas the bis(iminopyrrolyl)magnesium complex [(THF)2Mg{2-(Ph3CN=CH)C4H3N}2] (6) was isolated using the salt metathesis route. The heavier alkaline earth metal complexes of the general formula {(THF)nM(2-(Ph3CN=CH)C4H3N)2} [M = Ca (7), Sr (8), and n = 2; M = Ba (9), n = 3] were prepared in pure form using two synthetic methods: in the first method, the bulky iminopyrrole ligand 1-H was directly treated with the alkaline earth metal precursor [M{N(SiMe3)2}2(THF)n] (where M = Ca, Sr and Ba) in 2 : 1 molar ratio in THF solvent at ambient temperature. The complexes 7-9 were also obtained using the salt metathesis reaction, which involves the treatment of the potassium salt (4) with the corresponding metal diiodides MI2 (M = Ca, Sr and Ba) in 2 : 1 molar ratio in THF solvent. The molecular structures of all the metal complexes (1-H, 2-9) in the solid state were established through single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The complexes 5-9 were tested as catalysts for the ring-opening polymerization of ε-caprolactone. High activity was observed in the heavier alkaline earth metal complexes 7-9, with a very narrow polydispersity index in comparison to that of magnesium complexes 5 and 6.

Abstract
We study the adsorption and ring-opening of lactide on the naturally chiral metal surface Pt(321)(S). Lactide is a precursor for polylactic acid ring-opening polymerization, and Pt is a well known catalyst surface. We study, here, the energetics of the ring-opening of lactide on a surface that has a high density of kink atoms. These sites are expected to be present on a realistic Pt surface and show enhanced catalytic activity. The use of a naturally chiral surface also enables us to study potential chiral selectivity effects of the reaction at the same time. Using density functional theory with a functional that includes the van der Waals forces in a first-principles manner, we find modest adsorption energies of around 1.4 eV for the pristine molecule and different ring-opened states. The energy barrier to be overcome in the ring-opening reaction is found to be very small at 0.32 eV and 0.30 eV for LL- and its chiral partner DD-lactide, respectively. These energies are much smaller than the activation energy for a dehydrogenation reaction of 0.78 eV. Our results thus indicate that (a) ring-opening reactions of lactide on Pt(321) can be expected already at very low temperatures, and Pt might be a very effective catalyst for this reaction; (b) the ring-opening reaction rate shows noticeable enantioselectivity.

A series of racemic 2-[(2'-(dimethylamino)biphenyl-2-ylimino)methyl]-4-R(2)-6-R(1)-phenols (L¹H-L⁴H) were reacted with {Mg[N(SiMe3)2]2}2 to provide four heteroleptic magnesium complexes (L¹⁻⁴)MgN(SiMe3)2·(THF)n (1, R(1) = (t)Bu, R(2) = Me, n = 1; 2, R(1) = R(2) = CMe2Ph, n = 0; 3, R(1) = CPh3, R(2) = (t)Bu, n = 1; 4, R(1) = Br, R(2) = (t)Bu, n = 0), which have been fully characterized. X-ray structural determination shows that complex 1 possesses a monomeric structure, but complex 4 is dimeric with C2-symmetry where the two metal centers are bridged by two phenolate oxygen atoms of the ligands. The coordination geometry around the magnesium center in these complexes can be best described as a distorted tetrahedral geometry. The heteroleptic complexes 1-4 efficiently initiate the ring-opening polymerization of rac-lactide and α-methyltrimethylene carbonate (α-MeTMC) and the polymerizations are better controlled in the presence of 2-propanol. In general, the introduction of a bulky ortho-substituent on the phenoxy unit results in increases of both the catalytic activity and the stereo- or regioselectivity of the corresponding magnesium complex. Microstructure analyses of the resulting PLAs revealed that P(r) values range from 0.46 to 0.81, depending on the catalyst and the polymerization conditions. For racemic α-MeTMC, detailed analyses using (1)H and (13)C NMR spectroscopy indicated the preferential ring-opening of α-MeTMC at the most hindered oxygen-acyl bond (X(reg) = 0.65-0.86).
