Strategy for the Co-Assembly of Co-Axial Nanotube-Polymer Hybrids

Nanostructured materials having multiple, discrete domains of sorted components are particularly important to create efficient optoelectronics. The construction of multicomponent nanostructures from self-assembled components is exceptionally challenging due to the propensity of noncovalent materials to undergo structural reorganization in the presence of excipient polymers. This work demonstrates that polymer-nanotube composites comprised of a self-assembled nanotube wrapped with two conjugated polymers could be assembled using a layer-by-layer approach. The polymer-nanotube nanostructures arrange polymer layers coaxially on the nanotube surface. Femtosecond transient absorption (TA) studies indicated that the polymer-nanotube composites undergo photoinduced charge separation upon excitation of the NDI chromophore within the nanotube.

Multichromophoric π-Conjugation: Modular Design for Gated and Cascade Energy Transfer

Multichromophore arrays allow for cascade energy transfer. As an isoelectronic analogue of indacenyl, bis(triazolo)benzene features a fused tricyclic skeleton that rigidly places two π-extended triazoles in close proximity. Such triazole-based fluorophores behave as electronically independent modules in the ground states, but become tightly coupled upon photoexcitation for highly efficient excitation energy transfer (EET) that can be gated by external stimuli. Taking this donor-acceptor fluorophore system a step further, we have designed and implemented a cascade EET. Here, the initial excitation takes part in a circular relay to arrive at the longest-wavelength emitting site as the final destination. Modularly constructed triazoloarenes should serve as versatile platforms for chemically controlled optical signaling.

Light-triggered assembly–disassembly of an ordered donor–acceptor π-stack using a photoresponsive dimethyldihydropyrene π-switch

A dimethyldihydropyrene based photochromic π-switch in its closed state forms donor–acceptor stacks with 1,4,5,8-naphthalenetetracarboxylic dianhydride. The stacks collapse in the photoisomeric open form.

Multifarious facets of sugar-derived molecular gels: molecular features, mechanisms of self-assembly and emerging applications

The remarkable capability of nature to design and create excellent self-assembled nano-structures, especially in the biological world, has motivated chemists to mimic such systems with synthetic molecular and supramolecular systems. The hierarchically organized self-assembly of low molecular weight gelators (LMWGs) based on non-covalent interactions has been proven to be a useful tool in the development of well-defined nanostructures. Among these, the self-assembly of sugar-derived LMWGs has received immense attention because of their propensity to furnish biocompatible, hierarchical, supramolecular architectures that are macroscopically expressed in gel formation. This review sheds light on various aspects of sugar-derived LMWGs, uncovering their mechanisms of gelation, structural analysis, and tailorable properties, and their diverse applications such as stimuli-responsiveness, sensing, self-healing, environmental problems, and nano and biomaterials synthesis.

Supramolecular block copolymers by kinetically controlled co-self-assembly of planar and core-twisted perylene bisimides

New synthetic methodologies for the formation of block copolymers have revolutionized polymer science within the last two decades. However, the formation of supramolecular block copolymers composed of alternating sequences of larger block segments has not been realized yet. Here we show by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), 2D NMR and optical spectroscopy that two different perylene bisimide dyes bearing either a flat (A) or a twisted (B) core self-assemble in water into supramolecular block copolymers with an alternating sequence of (A_mBB)_n. The highly defined ultralong nanowire structure of these supramolecular copolymers is entirely different from those formed upon self-assembly of the individual counterparts, that is, stiff nanorods (A) and irregular nanoworms (B), respectively. Our studies further reveal that the as-formed supramolecular block copolymer constitutes a kinetic self-assembly product that transforms into thermodynamically more stable self-sorted homopolymers upon heating.

Block co-polymers are becoming of ever-increasing importance in polymer science. Here, the authors show that the co-assembly of two perylene bisimide dyes leads to supramolecular block copolymer structures with a regular alternating sequence of short blocks of respective homoaggregates.

Extended supramolecular organization of π-systems using yet unexplored simultaneous intra- and inter-molecular H-bonding motifs of 1,3-dihydroxy derivatives

Simultaneous intra- and inter-molecular H-bonding among 1,3-dihydroxyl derivatives with acceptor chromophores leads to fibrillar gelation facilitating π-stacking and specific donor intercalation.

Redox-switchable copper(I) metallogel: a metal-organic material for selective and naked-eye sensing of picric acid

Thiourea (TU), a commercially available laboratory chemical, has been discovered to introduce metallogelation when reacted with copper(II) chloride in aqueous medium. The chemistry involves the reduction of Cu(II) to Cu(I) with concomitant oxidation of thiourea to dithiobisformamidinium dichloride. The gel formation is triggered through metal-ligand complexation, i.e., Cu(I)-TU coordination and extensive hydrogen bonding interactions involving thiourea, the disulfide product, water, and chloride ions. Entangled network morphology of the gel selectively develops in water, maybe for its superior hydrogen-bonding ability, as accounted from Kamlet-Taft solvent parameters. Complete and systematic chemical analyses demonstrate the importance of both Cu(I) and chloride ions as the key ingredients in the metal-organic coordination gel framework. The gel is highly fluorescent. Again, exclusive presence of Cu(I) metal centers in the gel structure makes the gel redox-responsive and therefore it shows reversible gel-sol phase transition. However, the reversibility does not cause any morphological change in the gel phase. The gel practically exhibits its multiresponsive nature and therefore the influences of different probable interfering parameters (pH, selective metal ions and anions, selective complexing agents, etc.) have been studied mechanistically and the results might be promising for different applications. Finally, the gel material shows a highly selective visual response to a commonly used nitroexplosive, picric acid among a set of 19 congeners and the preferred selectivity has been mechanistically interpreted with density functional theory-based calculations.

A large dipole moment to promote gelation for 4-nitrophenylacrylonitrile derivatives with gelation-induced emission enhancement properties

4-Nitrophenylacrylonitrile derivatives were gelator, but analogues without nitro group were not, indicating that the electron-withdrawing nitro moiety was important for gel formation. Moreover, the organogels exhibited fluorescence enhancement.

Supramolecular assemblies of amide-derived organogels featuring rigid π-conjugated phenylethynyl frameworks

Organogels, being an important class of soft materials, have evolved to be one of the most attractive subjects bridging supramolecular chemistry and material sciences due to their structural diversity and associated physical properties. Myriad applications in fields such as optoelectronics, light harvesting, environmental science, and regenerative medicine are being envisaged. Supramolecular gels usually are formed through self-aggregation of small-molecule gelators to form entangled self-assembled fibrillar networks through a combination of non covalent interactions such as hydrogen bonding, π-π stacking, electrostatic forces, donor-acceptor interactions, metal coordination, solvophobic forces, and van der Waals interactions. This feature article discusses recent and current state of research on amide derived organogelators bearing rigid conjugated phenylethynyl building blocks. Selective examples from our works along with some closely related examples from literature have been highlighted to showcase the structural diversity and their potential applications in supramolecular chemistry and materials science.

Efficient management of fruit pests by pheromone nanogels

Environment-friendly management of fruit flies involving pheromones is useful in reducing the undesirable pest populations responsible for decreasing the yield and the crop quality. A nanogel has been prepared from a pheromone, methyl eugenol (ME) using a low-molecular mass gelator. This was very stable at open ambient conditions and slowed down the evaporation of pheromone significantly. This enabled its easy handling and transportation without refrigeration, and reduction in the frequency of pheromone recharging in the orchard. Notably the involvement of the nano-gelled pheromone brought about an effective management of Bactrocera dorsalis, a prevalent harmful pest for a number of fruits including guava. Thus a simple, practical and low cost green chemical approach is developed that has a significant potential for crop protection, long lasting residual activity, excellent efficacy and favorable safety profiles. This makes the present invention well-suited for pest management in a variety of crops.

Co-assembled white-light-emitting hydrogel of melamine

A coassembled light-harvesting hydrogel of melamine (M), 6,7-dimethoxy-2,4[1H, 3H]-quinazolinedione (Q) with riboflavin (R), is used to produce a white-light-emitting hydrogel (W-gel) by mixing with the dye rhodamine B (RhB) in a requisite proportion. Addition of R to the Q solution causes both static and dynamic quenching to the emission of Q as evident from the Stern-Volmer plot and the emission of R shows a gradual increase in intensity. On addition of RhB to an aqueous solution of R, fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) occurs, showing an emission peak at 581 nm. In a solution of constant molar ratio of Q and R, addition of RhB causes a quenching of emission of R with no effect on the emission of Q, indicating that the energy transfer takes place only between R and RhB. In the MQR coassembled hydrogel containing RhB, the gel melting temperature is lower than those of MQ and MQR gel, but the storage modulus remains almost unaffected. The oscillatory stress experiment indicates a gradual decrease of critical stress values for breaking of MQ, MQR, and W-gels attributed to the coassembly. In contrast to the solution of Q and R, energy transfer occurs on addition of RhB to the MQ gel. By varying the RhB and R concentration in the 1:1 MQ gel white light emission is observed for the W-gel composition having molar ratio of M:Q:R:RhB = 100:100:0.5:0.02 with the Commission Internationale de L'eclairage (CIE) coordinates of 0.31 and 0.36 for the excitation at 360 nm. However, in the sol state, the CIE coordinates of the hybrid differ significantly from those of the white light.
