Abstract
Designing smart autonomous healing soft materials is crucial to attaining cost-efficiency and optimal performance in organic semiconductors. In this context, we design an unsymmetrical thiophene-fused phenazine (TFP)-based discotic liquid crystal (DLC) with the goal of creating an active organic semiconductor that encompasses favorable attributes, such as polarizability, mobility, and processability. Aligned with our objective, we successfully synthesized two unsymmetrical TFP core-based DLCs by linking alkyl chains of variable lengths at the periphery through a coupling reaction. These DLCs show room temperature columnar oblique (Colob) mesophase as evident from temperature-dependent studies employing polarized optical microscopy (POM) and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). We performed space charge-limited current (SCLC) techniques to evaluate the hole mobility of TFP-based DLCs and found that they have high hole mobility (∼10-3 cm2/V s). Additionally, the film morphology and its self-healing nature have been examined using atomic force microscopy (AFM) and stress relaxation test. One of the unsymmetrical DLCs exhibited an ability to relax stress over time while maintaining a constant strain (up to 1-3%). The rational design of these unsymmetrical discotics, exhibiting reduced threshold voltage (as confirmed by conductivity studies) highlights their possible potential in various organic semiconductor devices.

Abstract
The incorporation of heteroatoms in the chemical structure of organic molecules has been identified as analogous to the doping process adopted in silicon semiconductors to influence the nature of charge carriers. This strategy has been an eye-opener for material chemists in synthesizing new materials for optoelectronic applications. Phenanthro[9,10-a]phenazine-based mesogens have been synthesized via a cyclo-condensation pathway involving triphenylene-based diketone and o-phenyl diamines. The incorporation of phenazine moiety as discussed in this paper, alters the symmetric nature of the triphenylene. The phenanthro[9,10-a]phenazine-based mesogens exhibit hole mobility in the order of 10-4 cm2/Vs as measured by the space-charge limited current (SCLC) technique. The current density in the SCLC device increases with increasing temperature which indicates that the charge transport is associated with the thermally activated hopping process. This report attempts to elucidate the self-organization of asymmetric phenanthro[9,10-a] phenazine in the supramolecular liquid crystalline state and their potential for the fabrication of high-temperature optoelectronic devices. However, the low charge carrier mobility can be one of the challenges for device performance.

Abstract
A series of liquid crystalline porphyrins was synthesized, purified, and characterized. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and hot-stage polarized optical microscopy (HS-POM) revealed that the porphyrins in the series with shorter alkyl arm lengths exhibit kinetic cold crystallization, wherein the molecules spontaneously organize into large, disc-like structures that remain stable upon cooling. Using DSC, the kinetic and thermodynamic parameters related to these materials were determined. Analysis of non-isothermal crystallization revealed the presence of multiple nucleation and growth processes related to cold crystallization.

Abstract
A series of hitherto unknown 5,14-diphenylbenzo[j]naphtho[2,1,8-def][2,7]phenanthrolines, containing a 5-azatetracene and a 2-azapyrene subunit, were prepared by combination of Pd-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions with a one-pot Povarov/cycloisomerization reaction. In the final key step four new bonds are formed in one step. The synthetic approach allows for a high degree of diversification of the heterocyclic core structure. The optical and electrochemical properties were studied experimentally and by DFT/TD-DFT and NICS calculations. Due to the presence of the 2-azapyrene subunit, the typical electronic nature and characteristics of the 5-azatetracene moiety are lost and the compounds are electronically and optically more related to 2-azapyrenes.

Abstract
Liquid crystals are considered to be the fourth state of matter with an intermediate order and fluidity in comparison to solids and liquids. Calixarenes are among one of the most versatile families of building blocks for supramolecular chemistry due to their unique vaselike structure that can be chemically engineered to have different shapes and sizes. During the last few decades, calixarenes have drawn much attention in the field of supramolecular chemistry due to their diverse applications in the fields of ion and molecular recognition, ion-selective electrodes for catalysis, drug delivery, gelation, organic electronics and sensors, etc. Imbuing liquid crystallinity to the calixarene framework leads to functionalized calixarene derivatives with fluidity and order. Columnar self-assembly of such derivatives in particular enhance the charge migration along the column due to the 1D stacking due to the enhanced π-π overlap. Considering limited reports and reviews on this new class of calixarene based liquid crystals, a comprehensive account of the synthesis of calixarene liquid crystals along with their mesomorphic behavior and potential applications are presented in this review.

Abstract
The unprecedented time-dependent long-range supramol-ecular assembly of electron-deficient hexaazatrinaphthylene (HATN) core based on peripheral crowding with three out-of-plane cyclic ketals is reported. The single-crystal X-ray structure of the diethyl derivative provided detailed information as to how four molecules in a repeating unit were packed in order to avoid steric crowding of the out-of-plane cyclic ketal side chain, providing locking and fastening for stabilizing the self-assembled structure. The polarizing optical microscopy (POM) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) did not instantaneously show any phase transition upon the cooling process. To our surprise, POM images showed a nucleation of spherulite up to 100 μm after 24 hour later. X-ray diffraction data further confirmed that these soft crystal formed a hexagonal-like crystal. The long-range self-assembly of the new material showed a slight red shift in the UV-vis absorption spectra and further substantiated by computational method.

Abstract
The synthesis of tris(aryloxadiazolyl)triazines (TOTs), C3‐symmetrical star‐shaped mesogenes with a 1,3,5‐triazine center, 5‐phenyl‐1,3,4‐oxadiazole arms, and various peripheral alkoxy side chains is reported. Threefold Huisgen reaction on a central triazine tricarboxylic acid and suitable aryltetrazoles yields the title compounds. Selected analogues with a benzene center are included in this study and allow for an evaluation of the impact of the central unit on the physical properties. Thermal (differential scanning calorimetry, DSC; polarization optical microscopy, POM), optical (UV/Vis, fluorescence), electric (time of flight, TOF), and structural (single crystal; wide‐angle X‐ray scattering, WAXS) properties of these compounds were investigated. The modification of alkoxy chain length and substitution pattern allows for a tuning of the physical properties. TOTs emit blue to yellow light, depending on conjugation length, donor–acceptor substitution, and solvent polarity, whereas concentration quenches and aggregation enhances the emission. The width of the mesophases is typically around ΔT=100–150 K but can even exceed 220 K. Polarization optical microscopy and X‐ray diffraction on oriented filaments reveal that TOTs are highly ordered liquid crystals (LCs) with long‐range hexagonal columnar structure.

Abstract
A new class of blue light-emitting bowl-shaped mesogens with the thiacalix[4]arene core appended with 1,3,4-thiadiazole derivatives having peripheral alkoxy side chains have been synthesized and well characterized. The liquid crystalline behavior of present synthesized derivatives was examined by optical polarizing microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and X-ray diffraction studies. It was observed that these thiacalix[4]arene derivatives were capable of stabilizing the observed Colh phase with a higher temperature range. The cone-shaped thiacalix[4]arene-based liquid crystals with peripheral alkoxy side chains able to pack into the columns with enriched intermolecular interactions and thermal behavior. All derivatives showed blue luminescence in solution, solid thin-film, and gelation state. The hexagonal columnar phase and emissive nature of thiadiazole-based thiacalixarene compounds having xerogel behavior make them favorable in the application of emissive electronic display devices. The electrochemical properties of these thiacalixarene-based compounds demonstrate the effect of alkyl side chain on the highest occupied molecular orbital-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital energy levels and also exhibited lower electron band gaps. The electroluminescence behavior of the compound 10c was examined as emissive layers in the fabrication of organic light-emitting diodes.

Abstract
Over several years, our research team has contributed to ligand design for metal-catalyzed stereoselective transformations. This has been achieved with the synthesis and application to organic transformations of interest of an array of structurally diverse P-containing ligands. These range from highly modular enantiopure phosphine–phosphite ligands to supramolecularly regulated enantioselective phosphorus-based catalysts. Our research in supramolecular interactions has also led to the discovery of an unprecedented halogen-bonded rhodium-catalyst.

Abstract
The novel metal free phthalocyanine and its copper complex which are octa-substituted at the peripheral positions with 4-(([Formula: see text]-3,7-dimethlyoctyloxy)phenoxy moieties were synthesized and characterized by FT-IR, 1H NMR and mass spectroscopy. Their mesomorphic properties were studied by polarizing optical microscopy. The spectroscopic properties and aggregation behaviors of the novel phthalocyanines were also investigated by UV-vis spectroscopy in different solvents with same concentration as well as in a wide range of concentrations of chloroform. Both compounds with chloroform and [Formula: see text]-dodecane clearly show the lyotropic columnar mesophase in a wide temperature range whereas thermotropic liquid crystalline behavior for both compounds is not observed. Both of these novel compounds show no aggregation in toluene, tetrahydrofuran, dichloromethane and chloroform.

Abstract
The electrical responses of a columnar liquid crystal (a diimidodiester derivative of benzo[ghi]perylene) deposited either by spin-coating or by thermal evaporation into a typical OLED device are compared. For the spin-coated film, homeotropic alignment was induced by thermal annealing, which enhanced the charge carrier mobility significantly. For the evaporated films, homeotropic alignment could not be obtained by annealing. However, a degree of rectification higher than 3 orders of magnitude was achieved, even without annealing, with an electrical response similar to the response of the aligned spin-coated film. A trap-limited space-charge-limited current model was used to extract the charge carrier mobility directly from the current-voltage curves. Grazing incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering confirmed the homeotropic alignment of the annealed spin-coated film, whereas the columns are mostly oriented parallel to the surface in the evaporated case. In a field-effect transistor with bottom-gate bottom-contact geometry, the evaporated film exhibited a typical behavior of an n-type transistor. The degree of intermolecular order is thereby strongly dependent on the deposition method where vacuum deposition leads to a higher order. This higher order, however, impedes reorientation by annealing of the evaporated film but leads to improved charge transport between the electrodes even without homeotropic alignment of columnar liquid crystal.

Abstract
We have synthesized a series of triarylamine-cored molecules equipped with an adjacent amide moiety and dendritic peripheral tails in a variety of modes. We show by (1) H NMR and UV/Vis spectroscopy that their supramolecular self-assembly can be promoted in solution upon light stimulation and radical initiation. In addition, we have probed their molecular arrangements and mesomorphic properties in the bulk by integrated studies on their film state by using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), variable-temperature polarizing optical microscopy (VT-POM), variable-temperature X-ray diffraction (VT-XRD), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Differences in the number and the disposition of the peripheral tails significantly affect their mesomorphic properties associated with their lamellar- or columnar-packed nanostructures, which are based on segregated stacks of the triphenylamine cores and the lipophilic/lipophobic periphery. Such structural tuning is of interest for implementation of these soft self-assemblies as electroactive materials from solution to mesophases.

Abstract
Novel hexacatenar molecules based on a 1,2,3-triazole-extended aromatic rod self-assemble into crystalline monoclinic and liquid crystalline hexagonal columnar structures depending on temperature. The phase transition may involve a conformational change from an anisotropic transoid to a half-disk cisoid conformer upon melting. In a hexacatenar molecule with sixfold octyl chains, the crystal-to-LC transition accompanies a photoluminescence color change from sky blue to dark blue, which is attributed to the formation of higher-order aggregates in the crystalline state.
