Abstract
Endohedral metal-metal-bonding fullerenes have recently emerged, in which encapsulated metals form a metal-metal bond. However, the physical reasons why some metal elements prefer to form metal-metal bonds inside fullerene are still unclear. Herein, we reported first-principles calculations on electronic structures, bonding properties, dynamics, and thermodynamic stabilities of endohedral metallofullerenes M2@C82 (M = Sc, Y, La, Lu). Multiple bonding analysis approaches unambiguously reveal the existence of one two-center two-electron σ covalent metal-metal bond in M2@C82 (M = Sc, Y, Lu); however, the La-La bonding interaction in La2@C82 is weaker and could not be categorized as one metal-metal covalent bond. The energy decomposition analysis on bonding interactions between an encapsulated metal dimer and fullerene cages suggested that there exist two electron-sharing bonds between a metal dimer and fullerene cages. The reasons why La2 prefers to donate electrons to fullerene cages rather than form a standard σ covalent metal-metal bond are mainly attributed to two following facts: La2 has a lower ionization potential, while the hybridization of ns, (n - 1)d, and np atomic orbitals in La2 is higher. Ab initio molecular dynamic simulations reveal that the M-M bond length at room temperature follows the trend of Sc < Lu < Y. The statistical thermodynamics calculations at different temperatures reveal that the experimentally observed endohedral metal-metal-bonding fullerenes M2@C82 have high concentrations in the endohedral fullerene formation temperature range.

Abstract
The metal-nonmetal interaction is complicated but significant in organometallic chemistry and metallic catalysis and is susceptible to the coordination surroundings. Endohedral metallofullerene is considered to be an excellent model for studying metal-nonmetal interactions with the shielding effect of fullerenes. Herein, with the detection of ScGdO@C80 in a previous mass spectrum, we studied the effects of metal atoms (Sc and Gd) on the metal-nonmetal interactions of the thermodynamically stable molecules M2O@C 2v (31922)-C80 (M = Sc and Gd), where metal atoms M can be the same or different, using density functional theory calculations. The inner metal atom and the fullerene cage show mainly ionic interactions with some covalent character. The Sc atom with higher electronegativity plays a greater important role in the metal-nonmetal interactions than the Gd atom. This study would be useful for the further study of the metal-nonmetal interaction.

"Dancing inside the ball": the structures and nonlinear optical properties of three Sc2S@C3v(8)-C82 isomers. J Mol Model 2015; 21:259. Abstract
Recently, the crystal structures and electrochemical properties of the isomers (Sc2S "trapped" in C82) have been reported, in which the Sc2S is located inside the different positions of the C82 cage. In the present work, three isomers of endohedral metallofullerenes Sc2S@C3v(8)-C82 (A, B, and C) have been designed to explore the effect of the position of Sc2S on their interaction energies and nonlinear optical properties. Among three isomers, the Sc2S is located in different positions of the C82 cage: the angles of Sc-S-Sc in A, B, and C are 104.9, 114.8, and 115.7°, respectively. Furthermore, the analysis of natural bond orbital (NBO) charge indicates that the electron-transfer is from the Sc2S to the adjacent carbon atoms of the C82 cage. The interaction energy of B is the smallest among three isomers which is -226.2 kcal mol(-1). It was worth mentioning that their first hyperpolarizabilities (β tot) were studied, we found that their β tot values were related to the positions of Sc2S: C (2100) > B (1191) > A (947 au). We hope that the present work can provide a new strategy to promote the nonlinear optical properties of endohedral metallofullerenes by changing the positions of the encapsulated molecular. Graphical abstract Three isomers of endohedral metallofullerenes Sc2S@C3v(8)-C82 (A, B, and C) have been designed to explore the position effect of Sc2S on the interaction energies and nonlinear optical properties. Among three isomers, the Sc2S in B has the most stable position. Significantly, the first hyperpolarizability is related to the position of Sc2S inside the C82 cage, which provides a novel strategy to enhance the first hyperpolarizability by the Sc2S revolving inside the C82 cage.

Abstract
Sc(2)S@C(84) has recently been detected but not structurally characterized.1 Density functional theory calculations on C(84) and Sc(2)S@C(84) show that the favored isomer of Sc(2)S@C84 shares the same parent cage as Sc(2)C2@C(84), whereas Sc(2)S@C(84):51383, which violates the isolated-pentagon rule, is the second lowest energy isomer with the widest HOMO-LUMO gap and shows high kinetic stability. The analysis shows that Sc(2)S@C(84):51575 is favored when the temperature exceeds 2,800 K and it can transform into the most favorable isomer Sc(2)S@C(84):51591. Molecular orbital analysis indicates that both Sc(2)S and Sc(2)C(2) formally transfer four electrons to the cage, and quantum theory of atoms in molecules analysis demonstrates that there is a covalent interaction between Sc(2)S and C(84):51591. The IR spectra of Sc(2)S@C(84) are provided to aid future structural identification.

Abstract
In terms of density functional theory combined with statistic mechanics computations, we investigated a dimetallic sulfide endohedral fullerene Sc2S@C76 which has been synthesized without any characterization in experiments. Our theoretical study reveals that Sc2S@Td(19151)-C76 which satisfies the isolated-pentagon rule (IPR) possesses the lowest energy, followed by three non-IPR structures (Sc2S@C2v(19138)-C76, Sc2S@Cs(17490)-C76, and Sc2S@C1(17459)-C76). To clarify the relative stabilities of those isomers at high temperatures, enthalpy-entropy interplay has been taken into consideration. Calculation results indicate that three species Sc2S@Td(19151)-C76, Sc2S@C2v(19138)-C76, and Sc2S@C1(17459)-C76 have noticeable molar fractions at the fullerene-formation temperature region (500-3000K), and the Sc2S@C1(17459)-C76 with one pentagon pair becomes the most predominant isomer above 1800 K, suggesting that the unexpected non-IPR structure is thermodynamically favorable at elevated temperatures. In addition, the structural characteristics, electron features, UV-vis-NIR adsorptions, and (13)C NMR spectra of those three stable structures are introduced to assist experimental identification and characterization in future.

Abstract
Recently, a new sulfide cluster fullerene, Sc2S@Cs (10528)-C72 containing two pairs of fused pentagons has been isolated and characterized (Chen et al., J. Am. Chem. Soc., 2012, 134, 7851). Inspired by this investigation, we propose a question: what properties will be influenced by the interaction between the encapsulated V-shaped polar molecule and C72? To answer this question, four encapsulated metallic fullerenes (EMFs) M2N@C72 (M = Sc or Y, N = S or O) along with pristine Cs-C72 (10528) were investigated by quantum chemistry methods. The results show that the Egap (3.01-3.14 eV) of M2N@C72 are significantly greater than that of pristine Cs-C72 (10528) (2.34 eV). This indicates that the stabilities of these EMFs increase by encapsulating the V-shaped polar molecule into the fullerene. Furthermore, the natural bond orbital (NBO) charge analysis indicates electron transfer from M2N to C72 cage, which plays a crucial role in enhancing first hyperpolarizability (βtot). The βtot follows the order of 1174 au (Y2O@C72) ≈ 1179 au (Sc2O@C72) > 886 au (Y2S@C72) ≈ 864 au (Sc2S@C72) > 355 au (C72). This indicates that the βtot of M2N@C72 is more remarkable than that of pristine Cs-C72 (10528) due to the induction effect of the encapsulated molecule. Compared with sulfide cluster fullerenes (Y2S@C72 and Sc2S@C72), oxide cluster fullerenes (Sc2O@C72 and Y2O@C72) show much larger βtot due to the small ionic radius and the large electronegativity of oxygen. In contrast, the metal element (scandium and yttrium) has a slight influence on the βtot. Thus, oxide cluster fullerenes are candidates to become promising nonlinear optical materials with higher performance.
