Distributive Nd-to-Yb Energy Transfer within Pure [YbNdYb] Heterometallic Molecules

Facile access to site-selective hetero-lanthanide molecules will open new avenues in the search of novel photophysical phenomena based on Ln-to-Ln' energy transfer (ET). This challenge demands strategies to segregate efficiently different Ln metal ions among different positions in a molecule. We report here the one-step synthesis and structure of a pure [YbNdYb] (1) coordination complex featuring short Yb···Nd distances, ideal to investigate a potential distributive (i.e., from one donor to two acceptors) intramolecular ET from one Nd³⁺ ion to two Yb³⁺ centers within a well-characterized molecule. The difference in ionic radius is the mechanism allowing to allocate selectively both types of metal ion within the molecular structure, exploited with the simultaneous use of two β-diketone-type ligands. To assist the photophysical investigation of this heterometallic species, the analogues [YbLaYb] (2) and [LuNdLu] (3) have also been prepared. Sensitization of Yb³⁺ and Nd³⁺ in the last two complexes, respectively, was observed, with remarkably long decay times, facilitating the determination of the Nd-to-Yb ET within the [YbNdYb] composite. This ET was demonstrated by comparing the emission of iso-absorbant solutions of 1, 2, and 3 and through lifetime determinations in solution and solid state. The comparatively high efficiency of this process corroborates the facilitating effect of having two acceptors for the nonradiative decay of Nd³⁺ created within the [YbNdYb] molecule.

Heteroatom-Modulated Assembly of Hexalanthanoid-Containing Polyoxometalate-Based Coordination Networks

Two series of lanthanoid (Ln)-containing polyoxometalates (POMs) {[Ln₆(ampH)₄(H₂O)_24-n(ampH₂)_n(PW₁₁O₃₉)₂]·21H₂O (Ln = Tb, n = 0 (1), Ln = Er, n = 1 (2)) and K₂[Ln₆(ampH)₄(H₂O)₂₂(SiW₁₁O₃₉)₂]·23H₂O (Ln = Tb (3), Er (4)) (ampH₂ = (aminomethyl) phosphonic acid)} have been synthesized with tri-lacunary Keggin-type POMs containing different types of heteroatoms. Compounds 1 and 2 display neutral organic-inorganic hybrid POM molecules containing {Ln₆(ampH)₄} ({Ln₆}) cores sandwiched by two {PW₁₁O₃₉} units. By changing the heteroatoms from P^V to Si^IV, the extended 2D networks of 3 and 4 were successfully isolated where the adjacent {Ln₆} clusters were connected by {SiW₁₁O₃₉} moieties. Luminescence performances and magnetic properties of 1-4 have been systematically surveyed. The solid-state fluorescence spectra of 1-4 display characteristic emissions of Ln components resulting from the 4f-4f transitions, and energy transfer from the POM segments to Ln³⁺ centers in 1 and 3 has been observed based on the lifetime decay behaviors. Furthermore, all compounds can be utilized as electrocatalysts toward reduction of nitrite with high stability.

Unparalleled selectivity and electronic structure of heterometallic [LnLn'Ln] molecules as 3-qubit quantum gates

Heterometallic lanthanide [LnLn'] coordination complexes that are accessible thermodynamically are very scarce because the metals of this series have very similar chemical behaviour. Trinuclear systems of this category have not been reported. A coordination chemistry scaffold has been shown to produce molecules of type [LnLn'Ln] of high purity, i.e. exhibiting high metal distribution ability, based on their differences in ionic radius. Through a detailed analysis of density functional theory (DFT) based calculations, we discern the energy contributions that lead to the unparalleled chemical selectivity of this molecular system. Some of the previously reported examples are compared here with the newly prepared member of this exotic list, [Er₂Pr(LA)₂(LB)₂(py)(H₂O)₂](NO₃) (1) (H₂LA and H₂LB are two β-diketone ligands). A magnetic analysis extracted from magnetization and calorimetry determinations identifies the necessary attributes for it to act as an addressable, conditional multiqubit spin-based quantum gate. Complementary ab initio calculations confirm the feasibility of these complexes as composite quantum gates, since they present well-isolated ground states with highly anisotropic and distinct g-tensors. The electronic structure of 1 has also been analyzed by EPR. Pulsed experiments have allowed the establishment of the quantum coherence of the transitions within the relevant spin states, as well as the feasibility of a coherent control of these states via nutation experiments.

HERFD-XANES and RIXS Study on the Electronic Structure of Trivalent Lanthanides across a Series of Isostructural Compounds

We performed a systematic study of the complexes of trivalent lanthanide cations with the hydridotris(1-pyrazolyl)borato (Tp) ligand (LnTp₃; Ln = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, and Lu) using both high-energy-resolution fluorescence-detected X-ray absorption near-edge structure (HERFD-XANES) and resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) at the lanthanide L₃ absorption edge. Here, we report the results obtained and we discuss them against calculations performed using density functional theory (DFT) and atomic multiplet theory. The spectral shape and the elemental trends observed in the experimental HERFD-XANES spectra are well reproduced by DFT calculations, while the pre-edge energy interval is better described by atomic multiplet theory. The RIXS data show a generally rather complex pattern that originates from the intra-atomic electron–electron interactions in the intermediate and final states, as demonstrated by the good agreement obtained with calculations using an atomic-only model of the absorber. Guided by theoretical predictions, we discuss the possible origins of the observed spectral features and the trends in energy splitting across the series. The insight into the electronic structure of trivalent lanthanide compounds demonstrated here and obtained with advanced X-ray spectroscopies coupled with theoretical calculations can be applied to any lanthanide-bearing compound and be of great interest for all research fields involving lanthanides.

This work represents a systematic investigation of the complexes of trivalent lanthanide cations with the hydridotris(1-pyrazolyl)borato (Tp) ligand (LnTp₃; Ln = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, and Lu) using both high-energy-resolution fluorescence-detected X-ray absorption near-edge structure and resonant inelastic X-ray scattering at the lanthanide L₃ absorption edge. A nonsymmetric Dy2 single-molecule magnet with two relaxation processes triggered by an external magnetic field: a theoretical and integrated EPR study of the role of magnetic-site dilution

The 1 : 2 reaction between Dy(O₂CMe)₃·4H₂O and 1-acetyl-2-napthol (LH) in MeOH has provided access to the complex [Dy₂L₆(MeOH)]·MeOH (1·MeOH) in a good yield. The structures of the isomorphous complex 1·MeOH and its doped diamagnetic yttrium analogue [Dy_0.14Y_1.86L₆(MeOH)]·MeOH (Dy@Y2) have been determined by single-crystal X-ray crystallography and characterized based on elemental analyses, IR spectra, and powder X-ray patterns. Combined dc and ac magnetic susceptibility and the magnetization data for 1 suggest that this complex shows slow magnetic relaxation. Under a 0 Oe dc field, a single relaxation mechanism is seen while two magnetization relaxation processes are evident under a 1500 G external magnetic field. The fit to the Arrhenius law has been performed using the 1.8-10 K ac data, affording an effective barrier for the magnetization reversal of 13 K and 7 K under the external dc field. Theoretical studies have been performed using ab initio and density functional methodologies to understand the electronic structure and the magnetic relaxation dynamics resulting from the single Dy^III ion as well as from the dinuclear exchange-coupled states. Rich powder EPR spectra at the X-band and Q-band were obtained from Dy@Y2, as well as from the 1·MeOH dimer, while simulation studies revealed the ferromagnetic nature of the interaction between the Dy^III ions in accordance with theoretical studies.

Novel 2D isomorphic lanthanide complexes based on a bifunctional 5-(pyridin-3-yloxy)isophthalic acid: synthesis, structure, fluorescence and magnetic properties

The Tb(iii)-complex can be used as a multifunctional luminescent sensor presenting visual quenching responses towards acetone, Fe3+ and CrO42− in aqueous solution with high sensitivity and low detection limits.

Novel Lanthanide(III) Porphyrin-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks: Structure, Gas Adsorption, and Magnetic Properties

The present work focuses on the hydrothermal synthesis and properties of porous coordination polymers of metal-porphyrin framework (MPF) type, namely, {[Pr4(H2TPPS)3]·11H2O} n (UPJS-10), {[Eu/Sm(H2TPPS)]·H3O+·16H2O} n (UPJS-11), and {[Ce4(H2TPPS)3]·11H2O} n (UPJS-12) (H2TPPS = 4,4',4″,4‴-(porphyrin-5,10,15,20-tetrayl)tetrakisbenzenesulfonate(4-)). The compounds were characterized using several analytical techniques: infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric measurements, elemental analysis, gas adsorption measurements, and single-crystal structure analysis (SXRD). The results of SXRD revealed a three-dimensional open porous framework containing crossing cavities propagating along all crystallographic axes. Coordination of H2TPPS4- ligands with Ln(III) ions leads to the formation of 1D polymeric chains propagating along the c crystallographic axis. Argon sorption measurements at -186 °C show that the activated MPFs have apparent BET surface areas of 260 m2 g-1 (UPJS-10) and 230 m2 g-1 (UPJS-12). Carbon dioxide adsorption isotherms at 0 °C show adsorption capacities up to 1 bar of 9.8 wt % for UPJS-10 and 8.6 wt % for UPJS-12. At a temperature of 20 °C, the respective CO2 adsorption capacities decreased to 6.95 and 5.99 wt %, respectively. The magnetic properties of UPJS-10 are characterized by the presence of a close-lying nonmagnetic ground singlet and excited doublet states in the electronic spectrum of Pr(III) ions. A much larger energy difference was suggested between the two lowest Kramers doublets of Ce(III) ions in UPJS-12. Finally, the analysis of X-band EPR spectra revealed the presence of radical spins, which were tentatively assigned to be originating from the porphyrin ligands.

Designed polynuclear lanthanide complexes for quantum information processing

The design of dissymmetric organic ligands featuring combinations of 1,3-diketone and 2,6-diacetylpyridine coordination pockets has been exploited to produce dinuclear and trinuclear lanthanide-based coordination compounds. These molecules exhibit two or more non-equivalent Ln ions, most remarkably enabling the access to well-defined heterolanthanide compositions. The site-selective disposition of each metal ion within the molecular entities allows the study of each centre individually as a spin-based quantum bit, affording unparalleled versatility for quantum gate design. The inherent weak interaction between the Ln ions permits the performance of multi-qubit quantum logical operations realized through their derived magnetic states, or implementing quantum-error correction protocols. The different studies performed to date on these systems are revised, showing their vast potential within spin-based quantum information processing.

The coordination chemistry of benzhydrazide with lanthanide(iii) ions: hydrothermal in situ ligand formation, structures, magnetic and photoluminescence sensing properties

The influence of synthetic conditions on the solid-state structural formation of lanthanide(iii) complexes based on a hydrazide ligand have been investigated and reported. Depending on the solvents and reaction temperatures, the reactions of hydrated Ln(NO₃)₃ with a benzohydrazide (bzz) ligand afforded three classes of lanthanide(iii) coordination complexes viz. [Ln(bzz)(NO₃)](NO₃)₂ (1Ln; Ln = Sm (1), Eu (2), Gd (3), Tb (4), Dy (5)), [Ln(bzz)(ben)₃(H₂O)]·H₂O (2Ln; Ln = Pr (6), Nd (7), Sm (8), Eu (9), Gd (10), Tb (11), Dy (12), Er (13)), and [Ln₃(ben)₃] (3Ln; Ln = Eu (14), Gd (15), Tb (16), Dy (17), Er (18), Tm (19), Yb (20), Lu (21)). Complexes 1-5 in series 1Ln were isolated by slow evaporation of their isopropanol solutions at ambient temperature, and the complexes display similar discrete structures bearing distinct intermolecular N-H⋯O hydrogen bonds to generate a three-dimensional (3D) supramolecular architecture. Complexes 6-13 in series 2Ln were obtained under hydrothermal conditions at 110 °C where the in situ generated benzoate (ben) ligands participated in the formation of one-dimensional (1D) coordination polymers (CPs) with the bzz ligands. At a temperature of 145 °C the hydrothermal conditions result in the formation of the thermodynamically more stable products of 14-21 in series 3Ln, in which the bzz ligand underwent complete in situ hydrolysis to create the ben ligand. These coordination assemblies feature 1D zigzag chains that are formed by unusual low coordination numbers of the six- and seven-fold coordinated Ln³⁺ centers bridged by the ben ligands in μ ₂- and μ ₃-coordination modes. Notably, the chain structures of 2Ln can be transformed into the zigzag tape-like structures of 3Ln upon heating the crystalline samples to 400 °C in air. In the solid state at room temperature, the Eu- (2, 9, 14) and Tb- (4, 11, 16) containing complexes emit red and green light, respectively. The luminescence investigations show that the Eu- (9, 14) and Tb-(11, 16) based CPs could be used as fluorescent probes for acetone and Co²⁺ ions via an energy competition mechanism. Meanwhile, the Gd- (10, 15) and Dy- (12, 17) based CPs show typical antiferromagnetic interactions.

Azide-Coordination in Homometallic Dinuclear Lanthanide(III) Complexes Containing Nonequivalent Lanthanide Metal Ions: Zero-Field SMM Behavior in the Dysprosium Analogue

A series of homometallic dinuclear lanthanide complexes containing nonequivalent lanthanide metal centers [Ln₂(LH₂)(LH)(CH₃OH)(N₃)]·xMeOH·yH₂O [1, Ln = Dy^III, x = 0, y = 2; 2, Ln = Tb^III, x = 1, y = 1] have been synthesized [LH₄ = 6-((bis(2-hydroxyethyl)amino)-N'-(2-hydroxybenzylidene)picolinohydrazide] and characterized. The dinuclear assembly contains two different types of nine-coordinated lanthanide centers, because the nonequivalent binding of the azide co-ligand as well as the varying coordination of the deprotonated Schiff base ligand. Detailed magnetic studies have been performed on the complexes 1 and 2. Complex 1 and its diluted analogue (1_5%) are zero-field SMMs with effective energy barriers (U_eff) of magnetization reversal equal to 59(3) K and 66(3) K and relaxation times of τ₀ = 10(4) × 10^-6 s and 10(4) × 10^-8 s, respectively. On the other hand, complex 2 shows a field-induced SMM behavior. Combined ab initio and density functional theory calculations were performed to explain the experimental findings and to unravel the nature of the magnetic anisotropy, exchange-coupled spectra, and magnetic exchange interactions between the two lanthanide centers.

Accessing Lanthanide-to-Lanthanide Energy Transfer in a Family of Site-Resolved [LnIII LnIII '] Heterodimetallic Complexes

The ligand H₃ L (6-[3-oxo-3-(2-hydroxyphenyl)propionyl]pyridine-2-carboxylic acid), which exhibits two different coordination pockets, has been exploited to engender and study energy transfer (ET) in two dinuclear [Ln^III Ln^III '] analogues of interest, [EuYb] and [NdYb]. Their structural and physical properties have been compared with newly synthesised analogues featuring no possible ET ([EuLu], [NdLu], and [GdYb]) and with the corresponding homometallic [EuEu] and [NdNd] analogues, which have been previously reported. Photophysical data suggest that ET between Eu^III and Yb^III does not occur to a significant extent, whereas emission from Yb^III originates from sensitisation of the ligand. In contrast, energy migration seems to be occurring between the two Nd^III centres in [NdNd], as well as in [NdYb], in which Yb^III luminescence is thus, in part, sensitised by ET from Nd. This study shows the versatility of this molecular platform to further the investigation of lanthanide-to-lanthanide ET phenomena in defined molecular systems.

Multi-Nuclear Rare-Earth-Implanted Tartaric Acid-Functionalized Selenotungstates and Their Fluorescent and Magnetic Properties

A family of multinuclear rare-earth (RE)-implanted H₂tart^2--functionalized selenotungstates (STs) [H₂N(CH₃)₂]₁₃H{[W₂O₅(OH)₂(H₂tart)₂](H₂tart){[W₃O₆RE₂(H₂O)₆][SeW₉O₃₃]₂}₂}·31H₂O [RE = Eu³⁺ (1), Tb³⁺ (2), Dy³⁺ (3), Ho³⁺ (4), Y³⁺ (5); H₄tart = d-tartaric acid] have been afforded by a simple one-pot aqueous reaction and were structurally characterized. Intriguingly, their isomorphous organic-inorganic hybrid anion {[W₂O₅(OH)₂(H₂tart)₂](H₂tart){[W₃O₆RE₂(H₂O)₆][SeW₉O₃₃]₂}₂}^14- includes two sandwich-type {[W₃O₆[RE₂(H₂O)₆][SeW₉O₃₃]₂}^4- dimeric units with a W-O-RE heterometal core, which are further joined by two H₂tart^2--decorated dinuclear tungsten-oxo {W₂O₅(OH)₂(H₂tart)₂} clusters and a bridging H₂tart^2- ligand, contributing to a surprising Mobius band-like configuration. It is worth emphasizing that three H₂tart^2- ligands coordinate with tungsten centers rather than RE cations. For all we know, 1-5 delegate the infrequent RE-implanted STs functionalized by triplicate H₂tart^2- bridges. Furthermore, fluorescent performances of 1-4 as well as magnetic properties of 2-4 have been surveyed. The solid-state fluorescence emission spectra prove that each of them undoubtedly shows the characteristic emission peaks of RE cores, while alternating-current susceptibility measurements suggest field-induced single-molecule magnetic behavior in 3.

Structural Characterization, Magnetic and Luminescent Properties of Praseodymium(III)-4,4,4-Trifluoro-1-(2-Naphthyl)Butane-1,3-Dionato(1-) Complexes

Four new Pr(III) mononuclear complexes of formula [Pr(ntfa)3(MeOH)2] (1), [Pr(ntfa)3(bipy)2] (2), [Pr(ntfa)3(4,4′-Mt2bipy)] (3) and [Pr(ntfa)3(5,5′-Me2bipy)] (4), where ntfa = 4,4,4-trifuoro-1-(naphthalen-2-yl)butane-1,3-dionato(1-), 5,5′-Me2bipy = 5,5′-dimethyl-2,2′-dipyridine, 4,4′-Mt2bipy = 4,4′-dimethoxy-2,2′-dipyridine, have been synthesized and structurally characterized. The complexes display the coordination numbers 8 for 1, 3 and 4, and 10 for 2. Magnetic measurements of complexes 1–4 were consistent with a magnetically uncoupled Pr3+ ion in the 3H4 ground state. The solid state luminescence studies showed that the ancillary chelating bipyridyl ligands in the 2–4 complexes greatly enhance the luminescence emission in the visible and NIR regions through efficient energy transfer from the ligands to the central Pr3+ ion; behaving as “antenna” ligands.

Radii-dependent self-assembly polynuclear lanthanide complexes as catalysts for CO2 transformation into cyclic carbonates

A series of lanthanide complexes with structural variation from a dinuclear to pentanuclear structure are found to be dependent on the radii of Ln3+ ions, and show high catalytic performance to obtain cyclic carbonates under solvent-free conditions.

A dissymmetric [Gd2] coordination molecular dimer hosting six addressable spin qubits

Artificial magnetic molecules can host several spin qubits, which could then implement small-scale algorithms. In order to become of practical use, such molecular spin processors need to increase the available computational space and warrant universal operations. Here, we design, synthesize and fully characterize dissymetric molecular dimers hosting either one or two Gadolinium(III) ions. The strong sensitivity of Gadolinium magnetic anisotropy to its local coordination gives rise to different zero-field splittings at each metal site. As a result, the [LaGd] and [GdLu] complexes provide realizations of distinct spin qudits with eight unequally spaced levels. In the [Gd₂] dimer, these properties are combined with a Gd-Gd magnetic interaction, sufficiently strong to lift all level degeneracies, yet sufficiently weak to keep all levels within an experimentally accessible energy window. The spin Hamiltonian of this dimer allows a complete set of operations to act as a 64-dimensional all-electron spin qudit, or, equivalently, as six addressable qubits. Electron paramagnetic resonance experiments show that resonant transitions between different spin states can be coherently controlled, with coherence times T_M of the order of 1 µs limited by hyperfine interactions. Coordination complexes with embedded quantum functionalities are promising building blocks for quantum computation and simulation hybrid platforms.

Magnetic dynamics of an open-ring tridysprosium complex employing mixed ligands

By employing mixed ligands, a new trinuclear dysprosium complex [Dy3(dbm)3(L)4](ClO4)2·CH2Cl2·2MeOH (1, Hdbm = dibenzoylmethane; HL = 2-methoxy-6-((quinolin-8-ylimino)methyl)phenol) was synthesized by a one-pot reaction. According to structural characterization, all the 8-coordinated Dy(iii) sites are well arranged with slightly distorted square antiprism (D4d) geometries. Magnetic measurements reveal that 1 exhibits typical single-molecule magnetic behavior at zero magnetic field and shows rarely open hysteresis loops up to 3 K among open-ring {Dy3} SMMs, where the relaxation time remains very stable under the protection from the Dy-Dy magnetic coupling in the open-ring arrangement of Ising spins.

Asymmetric Dinuclear Lanthanide(III) Complexes from the Use of a Ligand Derived from 2-Acetylpyridine and Picolinoylhydrazide: Synthetic, Structural and Magnetic Studies

A family of four Ln(III) complexes has been synthesized with the general formula [Ln₂(NO₃)₄(L)₂(S)] (Ln = Gd, Tb, Er, and S = H₂O; 1, 2 and 4, respectively/Ln = Dy, S = MeOH, complex 3), where HL is the flexible ditopic ligand N’-(1-(pyridin-2-yl)ethylidene)pyridine-2-carbohydrazide. The structures of isostructural MeOH/H₂O solvates of these complexes were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The two Ln^III ions are doubly bridged by the deprotonated oxygen atoms of two “head-to-head” 2.21011 (Harris notation) L¯ ligands, forming a central, nearly rhombic {Ln^III₂(μ-OR)₂}⁴⁺ core. Two bidentate chelating nitrato groups complete a sphenocoronal 10-coordination at one metal ion, while two bidentate chelating nitrato groups and one solvent molecule (H₂O or MeOH) complete a spherical capped square antiprismatic 9-coordination at the other. The structures are critically compared with those of other, previously reported metal complexes of HL or L¯. The IR spectra of 1–4 are discussed in terms of the coordination modes of the organic and inorganic ligands involved. The f-f transitions in the solid-state (diffuse reflectance) spectra of the Tb(III), Dy(III), and Er(III) complexes have been fully assigned in the UV/Vis and near-IR regions. Magnetic susceptibility studies in the 1.85–300 K range reveal the presence of weak, intramolecular Gd^III∙∙∙Gd^III antiferromagnetic exchange interactions in 1 [J/k_B = −0.020(6) K based on the spin Hamiltonian Ĥ = −2J(Ŝ_Gd1∙ Ŝ_Gd2)] and probably weak antiferromagnetic Ln^III∙∙∙Ln^III exchange interactions in 2–4. Ac susceptibility measurements in zero dc field do not show frequency dependent out-of-phase signals, and this experimental fact is discussed for 3 in terms of the magnetic anisotropy axis for each Dy^III center and the oblate electron density of this metal ion. Complexes 3 and 4 are Single-Molecule Magnets (SMMs) and this behavior is optimally observed under external dc fields of 600 and 1000 Oe, respectively. The magnetization relaxation pathways are discussed and a satisfactory fit of the temperature and field dependencies of the relaxation time τ was achieved considering a model that employs Raman, direct, and Orbach relaxation mechanisms.

Structural Variations in the Complete Series of Lanthanoid Complexes of a Calix[4]arene Trisamide

Lanthanoid picrate (pic) complexes of 5,11,17,23-tetra-tert-butyl-25-hydroxy-26,27,28-tris(diethylcarbamoylmethoxy)calix[4]arene (LH) have been synthesised and structurally characterised, to complete this series for all lanthanoids (other than promethium). From cerium to lutetium, three structural types are observed: Type I, [Ln(L)(O,O′-pic)](pic), Ln=Ce–Dy; Type II, [Ln(L)(O-pic)](pic), Ln=Tb, Ho; Type III, [Ln(L)(HOEt)](pic)2, Ln=Er–Lu. With lanthanum, three different ten-coordinate complexes were characterised; [Ln(L)(O,O′-pic)(HOEt)](pic), [Ln(L)(O,O′-pic)(OH2)](pic), and [Ln(L)(O,O′-pic)(HOMe)](pic). The crystallisation of Type I and II observed for terbium shows that the stability of the different structures are sensitively poised at the transition points. Nevertheless, the structures show that the vacant space in the coordination sphere left by the trisamide L tends to reduce across the series as expected. It is occupied by a bidentate picrate anion and unidentate solvent molecule with lanthanum, a bidentate picrate anion for cerium to dysprosium (Type I), a unidentate picrate anion for terbium and holmium (Type II), and finally a unidentate solvent molecule from erbium to lutetium (Type III). The coordination number thus reduces from 10 to 8 across the series.

Selective Lanthanide Distribution within a Comprehensive Series of Heterometallic [LnPr] Complexes

The preparation of heterometallic, lanthanide-only complexes is an extremely difficult synthetic challenge. By a ligand-based strategy, a complete isostructural series of dinuclear heterometallic [LnPr] complexes has been synthesized and structurally characterized. The two different coordination sites featured in this molecular entity allow study of the preferences of the praseodymium ion for a specific position depending on the ionic radii of the accompanying lanthanide partner. The purity of each heterometallic moiety has been evaluated in the solid state and in solution by means of crystallographic and spectrometric methods, respectively, revealing the limits of this strategy for ions with similar sizes. DFT calculations have been carried out to support the experimental results, confirming the nature of the site-selective lanthanide distribution. The predictable selectivity of this system has been exploited to assess the magnetic properties of the [DyPr] and [LuPr] derivatives, showing that the origin of the slow dynamics observed in the former arises from the dysprosium ion.

Two Series of Homodinuclear Lanthanide Complexes: Greatly Enhancing Energy Barriers through Tuning Terminal Solvent Ligands in Dy2 Single-Molecule Magnets

The utilization of 2-ethoxy-6-{[(2-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzyl)imino]methyl}phenol (H₂ L) as a chelating ligand, in combination with the employment of alcohols (EtOH and MeOH) as auxiliary ligands, in 4 f-metal chemistry afforded two series of dinuclear lanthanide complexes of compositions [Ln₂ L₂ (NO₃ )₂ (EtOH)₂ ] (Ln=Sm (1), Eu (2), Gd (3), Tb (4), Dy (5), Ho (6), Er (7)) and [Ln₂ L₂ (NO₃ )₂ (MeOH)₂ ] (Ln=Sm (8), Eu (9), Gd (10), Tb (11), Dy (12), Ho (13), Er (14)). The structures of 1-14 were determined by single-crystal X-ray crystallography. Complexes 1-7 are isomorphous. The two lanthanide(III) ions in 1-7 are doubly bridged by two deprotonated aminophenoxide oxygen atoms of two μ₂ :η⁰ :η¹ :η² :η¹ :η¹ :η⁰ -L^2- ligands. One nitrogen atom, two oxygen atoms of the NO₃^- anion, two methoxide oxygen atoms of two ligand sets, and one oxygen atom of the terminally coordinated EtOH molecule complete the distorted dodecahedron geometry of each lanthanide(III) ion. Compounds 8-14 are isomorphous and their structures are similar to those of 1-7. The slight difference between 1-7 and 8-14 stems from purposefully replacing the EtOH ligands in 1-7 with MeOH in 8-14. Direct-current magnetic susceptibility studies in the 2-300 K range reveal weak antiferromagnetic interactions for 3, 4, 7, 10, 11, and 14, and ferromagnetic interactions at low temperature for 5, 6, 12, and 13. Complexes 5 and 12 exhibit single-molecule magnet (SMM) behavior with energy barriers of 131.3 K for 5 and 198.8 K for 12. The energy barrier is significantly enhanced by dexterously regulating the terminal ligands. To rationalize the observed difference in the magnetic behavior, complete-active-space self-consistent field (CASSCF) calculations were performed on two Dy₂ complexes. Subtle variation in the angle between the magnetic axes and the vector connecting two dysprosium(III) ions results in a weaker influence on the tunneling gap of individual dysprosium(III) ions by the dipolar field in 12. This work proposes an efficient strategy for synthesizing Dy₂ SMMs with high energy barriers.
