Luminescent cyanoruthenate(II)-diimine and cyanoruthenium(II)-diimine complexes

Synthesis, structure and photoluminescence of Cu(I) complexes containing new functionalized 1,2,3-triazole ligands

The reaction of a triazole ligand, 2-(1H-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)pyridine (L1), with 2-bromopyridine afforded three new ligands, 2,2'-(1H-1,2,3-triazole-1,4-diyl)dipyridine (L2), 2,2'-(2H-1,2,3-triazole-2,4-diyl)dipyridine (L3) and 2,2'-(1H-1,2,3-triazole-1,5-diyl)dipyridine (L4). A series of luminescent mononuclear copper(I) complexes of these ligands [Cu(Ln)(P^P)](ClO4) [n = 1, P^P = (PPh3)2 (1); n = 1, P^P = POP (2); n = 2, P^P = (PPh3)2 (3); n = 2, P^P = POP (4); n = 3, P^P = (PPh3)2 (5); n = 3, P^P = POP (6); n = 4, P^P = (PPh3)2 (9); n = 4, P^P = POP (10)] have been obtained from the reaction of Ln with [Cu(MeCN)4]ClO4 in the presence of PPh3 and POP. L3 was also found to form dinuclear compounds [Cu2(L3)(PPh3)4](ClO4)2 (7) and [Cu2(L3)(POP)2](ClO4)2 (8). All of the Cu(I) compounds have been characterized by IR, UV/vis, CV, 1H NMR, and 31P{1H} NMR. The molecular structures of 1-3, 5, and 7 have been further determined by X-ray crystallography. In CH2Cl2 solutions, these Cu(I) complexes exhibit tunable green to orange emissions (563-621 nm) upon excitation at λex = 380 nm. In the solid state, these complexes show intense emissions and it is interesting to note that 1 and 3 are blue-light emitters. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that the lowest energy electronic transition associated with these complexes predominantly originates from metal-to-ligand charge transfer transitions (MLCT).

Luminescent monomeric and dimeric Ru(ii) acyclic carbene complexes as selective sensors for NH3/amine vapor and humidity

A new class of luminescent bis(bipyridyl) Ru(ii) pyridyl acyclic carbene complexes with environmentally-sensitive dimerization equilibrium have been developed. Owing to the involvement of the orbitals of the diaminocarbene ligand in the emissive excited state, the phosphorescence properties of these complexes are strongly affected by H-bonding interactions with various H-bonding donor/acceptor molecules. With the remarkable differences in the emission properties of the monomer, dimer, and H-bonded amine adducts together with the change of the dimerization equilibrium, these complexes can be used as luminescent gas sensors for humidity, ammonia, and amine vapors. With the responses to amines and humidity and the corresponding change in the luminescence properties, a proof-of-principle for binary optical data storage with a reversible concealment process has been described.

Tunable Luminescent Properties of Tricyanoosmium Nitrido Complexes Bearing a Chelating O^N Ligand

We have recently reported a strongly luminescent osmium(VI) nitrido complex [Os^VI(N)(NO₂-L)(CN)₃]^- [HNO₂-L = 2-(2-hydroxy-5-nitrophenyl)benzoxazole]. The excited state of this complex readily activates the strong C-H bonds of alkanes and arenes (Commun. Chem. 2019, 2, 40). In this work, we attempted to tune the excited-state properties of this complex by introducing various substituents on the bidentate L ligand. The series of nitrido complexes were characterized by IR, UV/vis, ¹H NMR, and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. The molecular structures of five of the nitrido compounds have been determined by X-ray crystallography. The photophysical and electrochemical properties of these complexes have been investigated. The luminescence of these nitrido complexes in the solid state, in a CH₂Cl₂ solution, and in a CH₂Cl₂ solid matrix at 77 K glassy medium clearly shows that these emissions are due to ³LML'CT [L ligand to Os≡N] phosphorescence. The presence of strongly electron-withdrawing substituents in these complexes enhances the LML'CT emission. Our result demonstrates that the excited-state properties of this novel class of luminescent osmium(VI) nitrido complexes can be fine-tuned by introducing various substituents on the bidentate L ligand.

Sensitive determination of lysozyme by using a luminescent and colorimetric probe based on the aggregation of gold nanoparticles induced by an anionic ruthenate(II) complex

The negatively charged ruthenate(II) complex [Ru(bpy)(PPh₃)(CN)₃]^- and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were used for detecting lysozyme (LYS). The luminescence of the ruthenate(II) complex is quenched by AuNPs, and this induces the aggregation of AuNPs and a color change from red to blue. After addition of lysozyme, the positively charged lysozyme and the negatively charged ruthenate(II) complex bind each other by electrostatic interaction firstly. This prevents AuNPs from aggregation and quenches the emission of the ruthenate(II) complex. Its luminescence and the degree of aggregation of the AuNPs can be used to quantify LYS. The fluorometric calibration plot is linear in the 0.01 to 0.20 μM LYS concentration range, and the calibration plot is linear between 0.02 and 0.20 μM of LYS. The color of the solution can be easily distinguished by bare eyes at 0.08 μM or higher concentration of LYS. The applicability of the method was verified by the correct analysis of LYS in chicken egg white. Phosphorescent platinum(ii) alkynyls end-capped with benzothiazole units

Phosphorescent platinum(ii) alkynyls. Phosphorescent trans-bis(alkynyl) bis(phosphine) or bis(cyanide) Pt^II derivatives (1–4) based on the 2-phenylbenzothiazole unit have been prepared. The negative solvatochromic behavior of 4 has been analyzed by the Kamlet–Taft solvent scale and the Gutmann's acceptor numbers. The optical properties were addressed by TD and DFT calculations on 2 and 4.

Synthesis, structures and photophysical properties of luminescent cyanoruthenate(ii) complexes with hydroxylated bipyridine and phenanthroline ligands

Two luminescent cyanoruthenate(ii) complexes with hydroxylated ligands were obtained and their solvatochromism, pH effect and cationic effect on the photophysical properties have been studied.
