Wide Temperature Electrolytes for Lithium Batteries: Solvation Chemistry and Interfacial Reactions

Improving the wide-temperature operation of rechargeable batteries is crucial for boosting the adoption of electric vehicles and further advancing their application scope in harsh environments like deep ocean and space probes. Herein, recent advances in electrolyte solvation chemistry are critically summarized, aiming to address the long-standing challenge of notable energy diminution at sub-zero temperatures and rapid capacity degradation at elevated temperatures (>45°C). This review provides an in-depth analysis of the fundamental mechanisms governing the Li-ion transport process, illustrating how these insights have been effectively harnessed to synergize with high-capacity, high-rate electrodes. Another critical part highlights the interplay between solvation chemistry and interfacial reactions, as well as the stability of the resultant interphases, particularly in batteries employing ultrahigh-nickel layered oxides as cathodes and high-capacity Li/Si materials as anodes. The detailed examination reveals how these factors are pivotal in mitigating the rapid capacity fade, thereby ensuring a long cycle life, superior rate capability, and consistent high-/low-temperature performance. In the latter part, a comprehensive summary of in situ/operational analysis is presented. This holistic approach, encompassing innovative electrolyte design, interphase regulation, and advanced characterization, offers a comprehensive roadmap for advancing battery technology in extreme environmental conditions.

Nonlocal metasurface for dark-field edge emission

Nonlocal effects originating from interactions between neighboring meta-atoms introduce additional degrees of freedom for peculiar characteristics of metadevices, such as enhancement, selectivity, and spatial modulation. However, they are generally difficult to manipulate because of the collective responses of multiple meta-atoms. Here, we experimentally demonstrate the nonlocal metasurface to realize the spatial modulation of dark-field emission. Plasmonic asymmetric split rings (ASRs) are designed to simultaneously excite local dipole resonance and nonlocal quasi-bound states in the continuum and spatially extended modes. With one type of unit, nonlocal effects are tailored by varying array periods. ASRs at the metasurface's edge lack sufficient interactions, resulting in stronger dark-field scattering and thus edge emission properties of the metasurface. Pixel-level spatial control is demonstrated by simply erasing some units, providing more flexibility than conventional local metasurfaces. This work paves the way for manipulating nonlocal effects and facilitates applications in optical trapping and sorting at the nanoscale.

Cobalt-Ion Superhygroscopic Hydrogels Serve as Chip Heat Sinks Achieving a 5 °C Temperature Reduction via Evaporative Cooling

In the rapidly advancing semiconductor sector, thermal management of chips remains a pivotal concern. Inherent heat generation during their operation can lead to a range of issues such as potential thermal runaway, diminished lifespan, and current leakage. To mitigate these challenges, the study introduces a superhygroscopic hydrogel embedded with metal ions. Capitalizing on intrinsic coordination chemistry, the metallic ions in the hydrogel form robust coordination structures with non-metallic nitrogen and oxygen through empty electron orbitals and lone electron pairs. This unique structure serves as an active site for water adsorption, beginning with a primary layer of chemisorbed water molecules and subsequently facilitating multi-layer physisorption via Van der Waals forces. Remarkably, the cobalt-integrated hydrogel demonstrates the capability to harvest over 1 and 5 g g-1 atmospheric water at 60% RH and 95% RH, respectively. Furthermore, the hydrogel efficiently releases the entirety of its absorbed water at a modest 40°C, enabling its recyclability. Owing to its significant water absorption capacity and minimal dehydration temperature, the hydrogel can reduce chip temperatures by 5°C during the dehydration process, offering a sustainable solution to thermal management in electronics.

Boosting Formate Electrooxidation by Heterostructured PtPd Alloy and Oxides Nanowires

Direct formate fuel cells (DFFCs) receive increasing attention as promising technologies for the future energy mix and environmental sustainability, as formate can be made from carbon dioxide utilization and is carbon neutral. Herein, heterostructured platinum-palladium alloy and oxides nanowires (PtPd-ox NWs) with abundant defect sites are synthesized through a facile self-template method and demonstrated high activity toward formate electrooxidation reaction (FOR). The electronic tuning arising from the heterojunction between alloy and oxides influence the work function of PtPd-ox NWs. The sample with optimal work function reveals the favorable adsorption behavior for intermediates and strong interaction in the d-p orbital hybridization between Pt site and oxygen in formate, favoring the FOR direct pathway with a low energy barrier. Besides the thermodynamic regulation, the heterostructure can also provide sufficient hydroxyl species to facilitate the formation of carbon dioxide due to the ability of combining absorbed hydrogen and carbon monoxide at adjacent active sites, which contributes to the improvement of FOR kinetics on PtPd-ox NWs. Thus, heterostructured PtPd-ox NWs achieve dual regulation of FOR thermodynamics and kinetics, exhibiting remarkable performance and demonstrating potential in practical systems.

Constructing N-Containing Poly(p-Phenylene) (PPP) Films Through A Cathodic-Dehalogenation Polymerization Method

Developing the films of N-containing unsubstituted poly(p-phenylene) (PPP) films for diverse applications is significant and highly desirable because the replacement of sp2 C atoms with sp2 N atoms will bring novel properties to the as-prepared polymers. In this research, an electrochemical-dehalogenation polymerization strategy is employed to construct two N-containing PPP films under constant potentials, where 2,5-diiodopyridine (DIPy) and 2,5-dibromopyrazine (DBPz) are used as starting agents. The corresponding polymers are named CityU-23 (for polypyridine) and CityU-24 (for polypyrazine). Moreover, it is found that both polymers can form films in situ on different conductive substrates (i.e., silicon, gold, ITO, and nickel), satisfying potential device fabrication. Furthermore, the as-obtained thin films of CityU-23 and CityU-24 exhibit good performance of alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction with the overpotential of 212.8 and 180.7 mV and the Tafel slope of 157.0 and 122.4 mV dec-1, respectively.

Modulating the Electronic Structure of Cobalt in Molecular Catalysts via Coordination Environment Regulation for Highly Efficient Heterogeneous Nitrate Reduction

Ammonia (NH3) is pivotal in modern industry and represents a promising next-generation carbon-free energy carrier. Electrocatalytic nitrate reduction reaction (eNO3RR) presents viable solutions for NH3 production and removal of ambient nitrate pollutants. However, the development of eNO3RR is hindered by lacking the efficient electrocatalysts. To address this challenge, we synthesized a series of macrocyclic molecular catalysts for the heterogeneous eNO3RR. These materials possess different coordination environments around metal centers by surrounding subunits. Consequently, electronic structures of the active centers can be altered, enabling tunable activity towards eNO3RR. Our investigation reveals that metal center with an N2(pyrrole)-N2(pyridine) configuration demonstrates superior activity over the others and achieves a high NH3 Faradaic efficiency (FE) of over 90 % within the tested range, where the highest FE of approximately 94 % is obtained. Furthermore, it achieves a production rate of 11.28 mg mgcat -1 h-1, and a turnover frequency of up to 3.28 s-1. Further tests disclose that these molecular catalysts with diverse coordination environments showed different magnetic moments. Theoretical calculation results indicate that variated coordination environments can result in a d-band center variation which eventually affects rate-determining step energy and calculated magnetic moments, thus establishing a correlation between electronic structure, experimental activity, and computational parameters.

A Boron, Nitrogen, and Oxygen Doped π-Extended Helical Pure Blue Multiresonant Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescent Emitter for Organic Light Emitting Diodes That Shows Fast kRISC Without the Use of Heavy Atoms

Narrowband emissive multiresonant thermally activated delayed fluorescence (MR-TADF) emitters are a promising solution to achieve the current industry-targeted color standard, Rec. BT.2020-2, for blue color without using optical filters, aiming for high-efficiency organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). However, their long triplet lifetimes, largely affected by their slow reverse intersystem crossing rates, adversely affect device stability. In this study, a helical MR-TADF emitter (f-DOABNA) is designed and synthesized. Owing to its π-delocalized structure, f-DOABNA possesses a small singlet-triplet gap, ΔEST, and displays simultaneously an exceptionally faster reverse intersystem crossing rate constant, kRISC, of up to 2 × 106 s-1 and a very high photoluminescence quantum yield, ΦPL, of over 90% in both solution and doped films. The OLED with f-DOABNA as the emitter achieved a narrow deep-blue emission at 445 nm (full width at half-maximum of 24 nm) associated with Commission Internationale de l'Éclairage (CIE) coordinates of (0.150, 0.041), and showed a high maximum external quantum efficiency, EQEmax, of ≈20%.

Eliminating the Burn-in Loss of Efficiency in Organic Solar Cells by Applying Dimer Acceptors as Supramolecular Stabilizers

The meta-stable active layer morphology of organic solar cells (OSCs) is identified as the main cause of the rapid burn-in loss of power conversion efficiency (PCE) during long-term device operation. However, effective strategies to eliminate the associated loss mechanisms from the initial stage of device operation are still lacking, especially for high-efficiency material systems. Herein, the introduction of molecularly engineered dimer acceptors with adjustable thermal transition properties into the active layer of OSCs to serve as supramolecular stabilizers for regulating the thermal transitions and optimizing the crystallization of the absorber composites is reported. By establishing intimate π-π interactions with small-molecule acceptors, these stabilizers can effectively reduce the trap-state density (Nt) in the devices to achieve excellent PCEs over 19%. More importantly, the low Nt associated with an initially optimized morphology can be maintained under external stresses to significantly reduce the PCE burn-in loss in devices. This research reveals a judicious approach to improving OPV stability by establishing a comprehensive correlation between material properties, active-layer morphology, and device performance, for developing burn-in-free OSCs.

Discovering DNA shape motifs with multiple DNA shape features: generalization, methods, and validation

DNA motifs are crucial patterns in gene regulation. DNA-binding proteins (DBPs), including transcription factors, can bind to specific DNA motifs to regulate gene expression and other cellular activities. Past studies suggest that DNA shape features could be subtly involved in DNA-DBP interactions. Therefore, the shape motif annotations based on intrinsic DNA topology can deepen the understanding of DNA-DBP binding. Nevertheless, high-throughput tools for DNA shape motif discovery that incorporate multiple features altogether remain insufficient. To address it, we propose a series of methods to discover non-redundant DNA shape motifs with the generalization to multiple motifs in multiple shape features. Specifically, an existing Gibbs sampling method is generalized to multiple DNA motif discovery with multiple shape features. Meanwhile, an expectation-maximization (EM) method and a hybrid method coupling EM with Gibbs sampling are proposed and developed with promising performance, convergence capability, and efficiency. The discovered DNA shape motif instances reveal insights into low-signal ChIP-seq peak summits, complementing the existing sequence motif discovery works. Additionally, our modelling captures the potential interplays across multiple DNA shape features. We provide a valuable platform of tools for DNA shape motif discovery. Surfactant-Free Ultrasonication-Assisted Synthesis of 2d Tellurium Based on Metastable 1T'-MoTe2

Elemental 2D materials (E2DMs) have been attracting considerable attention owing to their chemical simplicity and excellent/exotic properties. However, the lack of robust chemical synthetic methods seriously limits their potential. Here, a surfactant-free liquid-phase synthesis of high-quality 2D tellurium is reported based on ultrasonication-assisted exfoliation of metastable 1T'-MoTe2. The as-grown 2D tellurium nanosheets exhibit excellent single crystallinity, ideal 2D morphology, surfactant-free surface, and negligible 1D by-products. Furthermore, a unique growth mechanism based on the atomic escape of Te atoms from metastable transition metal dichalcogenides and guided 2D growth in the liquid phase is proposed and verified. 2D tellurium-based field-effect transistors show ultrahigh hole mobility exceeding 1000 cm2 V-1 s-1 at room temperature attributing to the high crystallinity and surfactant-free surface, and exceptional chemical and operational stability using both solid-state dielectric and liquid-state electrical double layer. The facile ultrasonication-assisted synthesis of high-quality 2D tellurium paves the way for further exploration of E2DMs and expands the scope of liquid-phase exfoliation (LPE) methodology toward the controlled wet-chemical synthesis of functional nanomaterials.

Meta-Lens Particle Image Velocimetry

Fluid flow behavior is visualized through particle image velocimetry (PIV) for understanding and studying experimental fluid dynamics. However, traditional PIV methods require multiple cameras and conventional lens systems for image acquisition to resolve multi-dimensional velocity fields. In turn, it introduces complexity to the entire system. Meta-lenses are advanced flat optical devices composed of artificial nanoantenna arrays. It can manipulate the wavefront of light with the advantages of ultrathin, compact, and no spherical aberration. Meta-lenses offer novel functionalities and promise to replace traditional optical imaging systems. Here, a binocular meta-lens PIV technique is proposed, where a pair of GaN meta-lenses are fabricated on one substrate and integrated with a imaging sensor to form a compact binocular PIV system. The meta-lens weigh only 116 mg, much lighter than commercial lenses. The 3D velocity field can be obtained by the binocular disparity and particle image displacement information of fluid flow. The measurement error of vortex-ring diameter is ≈1.25% experimentally validates via a Reynolds-number (Re) 2000 vortex-ring. This work demonstrates a new development trend for the PIV technique for rejuvenating traditional flow diagnostic tools toward a more compact, easy-to-deploy technique. It enables further miniaturization and low-power systems for portable, field-use, and space-constrained PIV applications.

Self-Assembled Multilayered Coatings with Multiple Cyclic Self-Healing Capability, Bacteria Killing, Osteogenesis, and Angiogenesis Properties on Magnesium Alloys

Self-healing coatings improve the durability of magnesium (Mg) implants, but rapid corrosion still poses a challenge in the healing stage. Moreover, Mg-based materials with acceptable bacteria killing, osteogenic and angiogenic properties are challenging in biomedical applications. Herein, the self-healing polymeric coatings are fabricated on Mg alloys using the spin-assisted layer-by-layer (SLbL) assembly of hyaluronic acid (HA) and branched polyethyleneimine (bPEI) followed by chemical crosslinking treatment. The self-healing coatings show excellent adhesion strength and structure stability. The corrosion resistance is improved due to the physical barrier of polymer coatings, which also promotes the formation of hydroxyapatite (HAp) during degradation for further protection of Mg substrate. Owing to the dynamic reversible hydrogen bonds existing between HA and bPEI, the crosslinked multilayered coatings possess fast, substantial, and cyclic self-healing capabilities leading to restoration of the original structure and functions. In vitro investigations reveal that the self-healing coatings have multiple functionalities pertaining to bacteria killing, cytocompatibility, osteogenesis, as well as angiogenesis. In addition, the self-healing coatings stimulate alkaline phosphatase activity (ALP), extracellular matrix (ECM) mineralization, and the expression of osteogenesis-related genes of mBMSCs and HUVECs. This study reveals a feasible strategy to design and prepare versatile self-healing coatings on Mg implants for biomedical applications.

Electrochemical Nitrate Reduction: Ammonia Synthesis and the Beyond

Natural nitrogen cycle has been severely disrupted by anthropogenic activities. The overuse of N-containing fertilizers induces the increase of nitrate level in surface and ground waters, and substantial emission of nitrogen oxides causes heavy air pollution. Nitrogen gas, as the main component of air, has been used for mass ammonia production for over a century, providing enough nutrition for agriculture to support world population increase. In the last decade, researchers have made great efforts to develop ammonia processes under ambient conditions to combat the intensive energy consumption and high carbon emission associated with the Haber-Bosch process. Among different techniques, electrochemical nitrate reduction reaction (NO3RR) can achieve nitrate removal and ammonia generation simultaneously using renewable electricity as the power, and there is an exponential growth of studies in this research direction. Here, a timely and comprehensive review on the important progresses of electrochemical NO3RR, covering the rational design of electrocatalysts, emerging CN coupling reactions, and advanced energy conversion and storage systems is provided. Moreover, future perspectives are proposed to accelerate the industrialized NH3 production and green synthesis of chemicals, leading to a sustainable nitrogen cycle via prosperous N-based electrochemistry.

Phase-Controlled Growth of 1T'-MoS2 Nanoribbons on 1H-MoS2 Nanosheets

2D heterostructures are emerging as alternatives to conventional semiconductors, such as silicon, germanium, and gallium nitride, for next-generation electronics and optoelectronics. However, the direct growth of 2D heterostructures, especially for those with metastable phases still remains challenging. To obtain 2D transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) with designed phases, it is highly desired to develop phase-controlled synthetic strategies. Here, a facile chemical vapor deposition method is reported to prepare vertical 1H/1T' MoS2 heterophase structures. By simply changing the growth atmosphere, semimetallic 1T'-MoS2 can be in situ grown on the top of semiconducting 1H-MoS2, forming vertical semiconductor/semimetal 1H/1T' heterophase structures with a sharp interface. The integrated device based on the 1H/1T' MoS2 heterophase structure displays a typical rectifying behavior with a current rectifying ratio of ≈103. Moreover, the 1H/1T' MoS2-based photodetector achieves a responsivity of 1.07 A W-1 at 532 nm with an ultralow dark current of less than 10-11 A. The aforementioned results indicate that 1H/1T' MoS2 heterophase structures can be a promising candidate for future rectifiers and photodetectors. Importantly, the approach may pave the way toward tailoring the phases of TMDs, which can help us utilize phase engineering strategies to promote the performance of electronic devices.

New Emerging Fast Charging Microscale Electrode Materials

Fast charging lithium (Li)-ion batteries are intensively pursued for next-generation energy storage devices, whose electrochemical performance is largely determined by their constituent electrode materials. While nanosizing of electrode materials enhances high-rate capability in academic research, it presents practical limitations like volumetric packing density and high synthetic cost. As an alternative to nanosizing, microscale electrode materials cannot only effectively overcome the limitations of the nanosizing strategy but also satisfy the requirement of fast-charging batteries. Therefore, this review summarizes the new emerging microscale electrode materials for fast charging from the commercialization perspective. First, the fundamental theory of electronic/ionic motion in both individual active particles and the whole electrode is proposed. Then, based on these theories, the corresponding optimization strategies are summarized toward fast-charging microscale electrode materials. In addition, advanced functional design to tackle the mechanical degradation problems related to next generation high capacity alloy- and conversion-type electrode materials (Li, S, Si et al.) for achieving fast charging and stable cycling batteries. Finally, general conclusions and the future perspective on the potential research directions of microscale electrode materials are proposed. It is anticipated that this review will provide the basic guidelines for both fundamental research and practical applications of fast-charging batteries.

Magnetic Particle Imaging: From Tracer Design to Biomedical Applications in Vasculature Abnormality

Magnetic particle imaging (MPI) is an emerging non-invasive tomographic technique based on the response of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) to oscillating drive fields at the center of a static magnetic gradient. In contrast to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), which is driven by uniform magnetic fields and projects the anatomic information of the subjects, MPI directly tracks and quantifies MNPs in vivo without background signals. Moreover, it does not require radioactive tracers and has no limitations on imaging depth. This article first introduces the basic principles of MPI and important features of MNPs for imaging sensitivity, spatial resolution, and targeted biodistribution. The latest research aiming to optimize the performance of MPI tracers is reviewed based on their material composition, physical properties, and surface modifications. While the unique advantages of MPI have led to a series of promising biomedical applications, recent development of MPI in investigating vascular abnormalities in cardiovascular and cerebrovascular systems, and cancer are also discussed. Finally, recent progress and challenges in the clinical translation of MPI are discussed to provide possible directions for future research and development.

Crystal Phase Engineering of Ultrathin Alloy Nanostructures for Highly Efficient Electroreduction of Nitrate to Ammonia

Electrocatalytic nitrate reduction reaction (NO3RR) toward ammonia synthesis is recognized as a sustainable strategy to balance the global nitrogen cycle. However, it still remains a great challenge to achieve highly efficient ammonia production due to the complex proton-coupled electron transfer process in NO3RR. Here, the controlled synthesis of RuMo alloy nanoflowers (NFs) with unconventional face-centered cubic (fcc) phase and hexagonal close-packed/fcc heterophase for highly efficient NO3RR is reported. Significantly, fcc RuMo NFs demonstrate high Faradaic efficiency of 95.2% and a large yield rate of 32.7 mg h-1 mgcat -1 toward ammonia production at 0 and -0.1 V (vs reversible hydrogen electrode), respectively. In situ characterizations and theoretical calculations have unraveled that fcc RuMo NFs possess the highest d-band center with superior electroactivity, which originates from the strong Ru─Mo interactions and the high intrinsic activity of the unconventional fcc phase. The optimal electronic structures of fcc RuMo NFs supply strong adsorption of key intermediates with suppression of the competitive hydrogen evolution, which further determines the remarkable NO3RR performance. The successful demonstration of high-performance zinc-nitrate batteries with fcc RuMo NFs suggests their substantial application potential in electrochemical energy supply systems.

Constructing Chiral Covalent-Organic Frameworks for Circularly Polarized Light Detection

The use of chiral covalent organic frameworks (COFs) as active elements in photodetectors to directly identify circularly polarized light (CPL) can meet the requirement of integration and miniaturization of the as-fabricated devices. Herein, the design and synthesis of two isoreticular chiral two-dimensional (2D) COFs (CityU-7 and CityU-8) by introducing photosensitive porphyrin-based amines (5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-aminophenyl)porphyrin) to enhance the optical absorption and chiral aldehyde linkage (2,5-bis((S/R))-2-methylbutoxy)terephthalaldehyde) to engender chirality for direct CPL detection  are  reported. Their crystalline structures  were  confirmed by powder X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and low-dose transition electron microscopy. Employing both chiral COFs as the active layers in photodetectors, left-handed circularly (LHC) and right-handed circularly (RHC) polarized light at 405 nm can be well distinguishable with short response time, high responsivity, and satisfying detectivity. The study provides the first example on the design and synthesis of chiral COFs for direct detection of CPL.

High-Throughput Study of Amorphous Stability and Optical Properties of Superlattice-Like Ge-Sb-Te Thin Films

A high-throughput ion beam sputtering system is used to synthesize compositional gradient superlattice-like (SLL) thin film libraries of Ge-Sb-Te alloys over the entire phase diagram. The optical properties and structural evolution of the Ge-Sb-Te combinatorial SLL thin film are investigated. A systematic screening over the annealing temperature, annealing time, and modulation period has elucidated the critical factors that affect the stability of the metastable phase and optical properties. It is found that amorphous stability and optical constant are highly dependent on the modulation period and chemical composition of the thin film. This data-driven approach offers new perspectives for accelerating the development of new materials with excellent optical and amorphous stability and for exploring their mechanisms, by greatly expanding the dataset of Ge-Sb-Te alloys with SLL structures through high-throughput experiments.

Catechin-Functionalized Cationic Lipopolymer Based Multicomponent Nanomicelles for Lung-Targeting Delivery

Catechins from green tea are one of the most effective natural compounds for cancer chemoprevention and have attracted extensive research. Cancer cell-selective apoptosis-inducing properties of catechins depend on efficient intracellular delivery. However, the low bioavailability limits the application of catechins. Herein, a nano-scaled micellar composite composed of catechin-functionalized cationic lipopolymer and serum albumin is constructed. Cationic liposomes tend to accumulate in the pulmonary microvasculature due to electrostatic effects and are able to deliver the micellar system intracellularly, thus improving the bioavailability of catechins. Albumin in the system acts as a biocompatible anti-plasma absorbent, forming complexes with positively charged lipopolymer under electrostatic interactions, contributing to prolonged in vivo retention. The physicochemical properties of the nano-micellar complexes are characterized, and the antitumor properties of catechin-functionalized materials are confirmed by reactive oxygen species (ROS), caspase-3, and cell apoptosis measurements. The role of each functional module, cationic polymeric liposome, and albumin is revealed by cell penetration, in vivo animal assays, etc. This multicomponent micellar nanocomposite has the potential to become an effective vehicle for the treatment of lung diseases such as pneumonia, lung tumors, sepsis-induced lung injury, etc. This study also demonstrates that it is a great strategy to create a delivery system that is both tissue-targeted and biologically active by combining cationic liposomes with the native bioactive compound catechins.

Conjugated Nickel Phthalocyanine Derivatives for Heterogeneous Electrocatalytic H2O2 Synthesis

Electrocatalytic hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) production has emerged as a promising alternative to the chemical method currently used in industry, due to its environmentally friendly conditions and potential for higher activity and selectivity. Heterogeneous molecular catalysts are promising in this regard, as their active site configurations can be judiciously designed, modified, and tailored with diverse functional groups, thereby tuning the activity and selectivity of the active sites. In this work, nickel phthalocyanine derivatives with various conjugation degrees are synthesized and identified as effective pH-universal electrocatalysts for H2O2 production after heterogenized on nitrogen-decorated carbon, with increased conjugation degrees leading to boosted selectivity. This is explained by the regulated d-band center, which optimized the binding energy of the reaction intermediate, reducing the energy barrier for oxygen reduction and leading to optimized H2O2 selectivity. The best catalyst, NiPyCN/CN, exhibits a high H2O2 electrosynthesis activity with ≈95% of H2O2 faradic efficiency in an alkaline medium, demonstrating its potential for H2O2 production.

Catalyzing Artificial Photosynthesis with TiO2 Heterostructures and Hybrids: Emerging Trends in a Classical yet Contemporary Photocatalyst

Titanium dioxide (TiO2) stands out as a versatile transition-metal oxide with applications ranging from energy conversion/storage and environmental remediation to sensors and optoelectronics. While extensively researched for these emerging applications, TiO2 has also achieved commercial success in various fields including paints, inks, pharmaceuticals, food additives, and advanced medicine. Thanks to the tunability of their structural, morphological, optical, and electronic characteristics, TiO2 nanomaterials are among the most researched engineering materials. Besides these inherent advantages, the low cost, low toxicity, and biocompatibility of TiO2 nanomaterials position them as a sustainable choice of functional materials for energy conversion. Although TiO2 is a classical photocatalyst well-known for its structural stability and high surface activity, TiO2-based photocatalysis is still an active area of research particularly in the context of catalyzing artificial photosynthesis. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the latest developments and emerging trends in TiO2 heterostructures and hybrids for artificial photosynthesis. It begins by discussing the common synthesis methods for TiO2 nanomaterials, including hydrothermal synthesis and sol-gel synthesis. It then delves into TiO2 nanomaterials and their photocatalytic mechanisms, highlighting the key advancements that have been made in recent years. The strategies to enhance the photocatalytic efficiency of TiO2, including surface modification, doping modulation, heterojunction construction, and synergy of composite materials, with a specific emphasis on their applications in artificial photosynthesis, are discussed. TiO2-based heterostructures and hybrids present exciting opportunities for catalyzing solar fuel production, organic degradation, and CO2 reduction via artificial photosynthesis. This review offers an overview of the latest trends and advancements, while also highlighting the ongoing challenges and prospects for future developments in this classical yet rapidly evolving field.

Current State and Future Perspectives of Printable Organic and Perovskite Solar Cells

Photovoltaic technology presents a sustainable solution to address the escalating global energy consumption and a reliable strategy for achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. Emerging photovoltaic technologies, especially the printable organic and perovskite solar cells, have attracted extensive attention due to their rapidly transcending power conversion efficiencies and facile processability, providing great potential to revolutionize the global photovoltaic market. To accelerate these technologies to translate from the laboratory scale to the industrial level, it is critical to develop well-defined and scalable protocols to deposit high-quality thin films of photoactive and charge-transporting materials. Herein, the current state of printable organic and perovskite solar cells is summarized and the view regarding the challenges and prospects toward their commercialization is shared. Different printing techniques are first introduced to provide a correlation between material properties and printing mechanisms, and the optimization of ink formulation and film-formation during large-area deposition of different functional layers in devices are then discussed. Engineering perspectives are also discussed to analyze the criteria for module design. Finally, perspectives are provided regarding the future development of these solar cells toward practical commercialization. It is believed that this perspective will provide insight into the development of printable solar cells and other electronic devices.

Salt-Induced High-Density Vacancy-Rich 2D MoS2 for Efficient Hydrogen Evolution

Emerging non-noble metal 2D catalysts, such as molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), hold great promise in hydrogen evolution reactions. The sulfur vacancy is recognized as a key defect type that can activate the inert basal plane to improve the catalytic performance. Unfortunately, the method of introducing sulfur vacancies is limited and requires costly post-treatment processes. Here, a novel salt-assisted chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method is demonstrated for synthesizing ultrahigh-density vacancy-rich 2H-MoS2, with a controllable sulfur vacancy density of up to 3.35 × 1014 cm-2. This approach involves a pre-sprayed potassium chloridepromoter on the growth substrate. The generation of such defects is closely related to ion adsorption in the growth process, the unstable MoS2-K-H2O triggers the formation of sulfur vacancies during the subsequent transfer process, and it is more controllable and nondestructive when compared to traditional post-treatment methods. The vacancy-rich monolayer MoS2 exhibits exceptional catalytic activity based on the microcell measurements, with an overpotential of ≈158.8 mV (100 mA cm-2) and a Tafel slope of 54.3 mV dec-1 in 0.5 m H2SO4 electrolyte. These results indicate a promising opportunity for modulating sulfur vacancy defects in MoS2 using salt-assisted CVD growth. This approach represents a significant leap toward achieving better control over the catalytic performances of 2D materials.

New Nanophotonics Approaches for Enhancing the Efficiency and Stability of Perovskite Solar Cells

Over the past decade, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) has experienced a remarkable ascent, soaring from 3.8% in 2009 to a remarkable record of 26.1% in 2023. Many recent approaches for improving PSC performance employ nanophotonic technologies, from light harvesting and thermal management to the manipulation of charge carrier dynamics. Plasmonic nanoparticles and arrayed dielectric nanostructures have been applied to tailor the light absorption, scattering, and conversion, as well as the heat dissipation within PSCs to improve their PCE and operational stability. In this review, it is begin with a concise introduction to define the realm of nanophotonics by focusing on the nanoscale interactions between light and surface plasmons or dielectric photonic structures. Prevailing strategies that utilize resonance-enhanced light-matter interactions for boosting the PCE and stability of PSCs from light trapping, carrier transportation, and thermal management perspectives are then elaborated, and the resultant practical applications, such as semitransparent photovoltaics, colored PSCs, and smart perovskite windows are discussed. Finally, the state-of-the-art nanophotonic paradigms in PSCs are reviewed, and the benefits of these approaches in improving the aesthetic effects and energy-saving character of PSC-integrated buildings are highlighted.

Push-Pull Heptamethines Near the Cyanine Limit Exhibiting Large Quadratic Electro-Optic Effect

Harnessing the quadratic electro-optic (QEO) of near-infrared polymethine chromophores over broad telecom wavelength bands is a subject of immense potential but remains largely under-investigated. Herein a series of push-pull heptamethines containing the tricyanofuran (TCF) acceptors and indoline or benzo[e]indoline donors are reported. These dipolar chromophores can attain a highly delocalized "cyanine-like" electronic ground state in solvents spanning a wide range of polarities, in some cases even closer to the ideal polymethine state than symmetrical cyanines. A transmission-mode electromodulation spectroscopy is used to study the electric-field-induced changes in optical absorption and refraction of polymer films doped with heptamethine chromophores, and large and thermally stable QEO effect with high efficiency-loss figure-of-merits that compare favorably to those from dipolar polyenes in poled or unpoled polymers and III-V semiconductors is obtained. The study opens a path for developing organic materials based on cyanine-like merocyanines for complementary metal oxide semiconductor -compatible, fast, efficient, and low-loss electro-optic modulation.

Electrolyte and Interphase Engineering of Aqueous Batteries Beyond "Water-in-Salt" Strategy

Aqueous batteries are promising alternatives to non-aqueous lithium-ion batteries due to their safety, environmental impact, and cost-effectiveness. However, their energy density is limited by the narrow electrochemical stability window (ESW) of water. The "Water-in-salts" (WIS) strategy is an effective method to broaden the ESW by reducing the "free water" in the electrolyte, but the drawbacks (high cost, high viscosity, poor low-temperature performance, etc.) also compromise these inherent superiorities. In this review, electrolyte and interphase engineering of aqueous batteries to overcome the drawbacks of the WIS strategy are summarized, including the developments of electrolytes, electrode-electrolyte interphases, and electrodes. First, the main challenges of aqueous batteries and the problems of the WIS strategy are comprehensively introduced. Second, the electrochemical functions of various electrolyte components (e.g., additives and solvents) are summarized and compared. Gel electrolytes are also investigated as a special form of electrolyte. Third, the formation and modification of the electrolyte-induced interphase on the electrode are discussed. Specifically, the modification and contribution of electrode materials toward improving the WIS strategy are also introduced. Finally, the challenges of aqueous batteries and the prospects of electrolyte and interphase engineering beyond the WIS strategy are outlined for the practical applications of aqueous batteries.

On-Site Melanoma Diagnosis Utilizing a Swellable Microneedle-Assisted Skin Interstitial Fluid Sampling and a Microfluidic Particle Dam for Visual Quantification of S100A1

Malignant melanoma (MM) is the most aggressive form of skin cancer. The delay in treatment will induce metastasis, resulting in a poor prognosis and even death. Here, a two-step strategy for on-site diagnosis of MM is developed based on the extraction and direct visual quantification of S100A1, a biomarker for melanoma. First, a swellable microneedle is utilized to extract S100A1 in skin interstitial fluid (ISF) with minimal invasion. After elution, antibody-conjugated magnetic microparticles (MMPs) and polystyrene microparticles (PMPs) are introduced. A high expression level of S100A1 gives rise to a robust binding between MMPs and PMPs and reduces the number of free PMPs. By loading the reacted solution into the device with a microfluidic particle dam, the quantity of free PMPs after magnetic separation is displayed with their accumulation length inversely proportional to S100A1 levels. A limit of detection of 18.7 ng mL-1 for S100A1 is achieved. The animal experiment indicates that ISF-based S100A1 quantification using the proposed strategy exhibits a significantly higher sensitivity compared with conventional serum-based detection. In addition, the result is highly comparable with the gold standard enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay based on Lin's concordance correlation coefficient, suggesting the high practicality for routine monitoring of melanoma.

Direct Seawater Electrolysis: From Catalyst Design to Device Applications

Direct seawater electrolysis (DSE) for hydrogen production, using earth-abundant seawater as the feedstock and renewable electricity as the driving source, paves a new opportunity for flexible energy conversion/storage and smooths the volatility of renewable energy. Unfortunately, the complex environments of seawater impose significant challenges on the design of DSE catalysts, and the practical performance of many current DSE catalysts remains unsatisfactory on the device level. However, many studies predominantly concentrate on the development of electrocatalysts for DSE without giving due consideration to the specific devices. To mitigate this gap, the most recent progress (mainly published within the year 2020-2023) of DSE electrocatalysts and devices are systematically evaluated. By discussing key bottlenecks, corresponding mitigation strategies, and various device designs and applications, the tremendous challenges in addressing the trade-off among activity, stability, and selectivity for DSE electrocatalysts by a single shot are emphasized. In addition, the rational design of the DSE electrocatalysts needs to align with the specific device configuration, which is more effective than attempting to comprehensively enhance all catalytic parameters. This work, featuring the first review of this kind to consider rational catalyst design in the framework of DSE devices, will facilitate practical DSE development.

Room-Temperature Chemoselective Hydrogenation of Nitroarene Over Atomic Metal-Nonmetal Catalytic Pair

Constructing atomic catalytic pair emerges as an attractive strategy to achieve better catalytic performance. Herein, an atomic Ir1─P1/NPG catalyst with asymmetric Ir─N2P1 sites that delivers superb activity and selectivity for hydrogenation of various functionalized nitrostyrene is reported. In the hydrogenation reaction of 3-nitrostyrene, Ir1─P1/NPG (NPG refers to N, P-codoped graphene) shows a turnover frequency of 1197 h-1, while the reaction cannot occur over Ir1/NG (NG refers to N-doped graphene). Compared to Ir1/NG, the charge density of the Ir site in Ir1─P1/NPG is greatly elevated, which is conducive to H2 dissociation. Moreover, as revealed by density functional theory calculations and poisoning experiments, the P site in Ir1─P1/NPG is found able to bind nitrostyrene, while the neighboring Ir site provides H to reduce the nitro group in chemoselective hydrogenation of nitrostyrene. This work offers a successful example of establishing atomic catalytic pair for driving important chemical reactions, paving the way for the development of more advanced catalysts to further improve the catalytic performance.

Pharmaceutical Residues in Edible Oysters along the Coasts of the East and South China Seas and Associated Health Risks to Humans and Wildlife

The investigation of pharmaceuticals as emerging contaminants in marine biota has been insufficient. In this study, we examined the presence of 51 pharmaceuticals in edible oysters along the coasts of the East and South China Seas. Only nine pharmaceuticals were detected. The mean concentrations of all measured pharmaceuticals in oysters per site ranged from 0.804 to 15.1 ng g-1 of dry weight, with antihistamines being the most common. Brompheniramine and promethazine were identified in biota samples for the first time. Although no significant health risks to humans were identified through consumption of oysters, 100-1000 times higher health risks were observed for wildlife like water birds, seasnails, and starfishes. Specifically, sea snails that primarily feed on oysters were found to be at risk of exposure to ciprofloxacin, brompheniramine, and promethazine. These high risks could be attributed to the monotonous diet habits and relatively limited food sources of these organisms. Furthermore, taking chirality into consideration, chlorpheniramine in the oysters was enriched by the S-enantiomer, with a relative potency 1.1-1.3 times higher when chlorpheniramine was considered as a racemate. Overall, this study highlights the prevalence of antihistamines in seafood and underscores the importance of studying enantioselectivities of pharmaceuticals in health risk assessments.

Deep-learning-based super-resolution for accelerating chemical exchange saturation transfer MRI

Chemical exchange saturation transfer (CEST) MRI is a molecular imaging tool that provides physiological information about tissues, making it an invaluable tool for disease diagnosis and guided treatment. Its clinical application requires the acquisition of high-resolution images capable of accurately identifying subtle regional changes in vivo, while simultaneously maintaining a high level of spectral resolution. However, the acquisition of such high-resolution images is time consuming, presenting a challenge for practical implementation in clinical settings. Among several techniques that have been explored to reduce the acquisition time in MRI, deep-learning-based super-resolution (DLSR) is a promising approach to address this problem due to its adaptability to any acquisition sequence and hardware. However, its translation to CEST MRI has been hindered by the lack of the large CEST datasets required for network development. Thus, we aim to develop a DLSR method, named DLSR-CEST, to reduce the acquisition time for CEST MRI by reconstructing high-resolution images from fast low-resolution acquisitions. This is achieved by first pretraining the DLSR-CEST on human brain T1w and T2w images to initialize the weights of the network and then training the network on very small human and mouse brain CEST datasets to fine-tune the weights. Using the trained DLSR-CEST network, the reconstructed CEST source images exhibited improved spatial resolution in both peak signal-to-noise ratio and structural similarity index measure metrics at all downsampling factors (2-8). Moreover, amide CEST and relayed nuclear Overhauser effect maps extrapolated from the DLSR-CEST source images exhibited high spatial resolution and low normalized root mean square error, indicating a negligible loss in Z-spectrum information. Therefore, our DLSR-CEST demonstrated a robust reconstruction of high-resolution CEST source images from fast low-resolution acquisitions, thereby improving the spatial resolution and preserving most Z-spectrum information.

Nanovoid formation mechanism in nanotwinned Cu

Nanotwinned metals have been intensely investigated due to their unique microstructures and superior properties. This work aims to investigate the nanovoid formation mechanism in sputter-deposited nanotwinned Cu. Three different types of epitaxial or polycrystalline Cu films are fabricated by magnetron sputtering deposition technique. In the epitaxial Cu (111) films deposited on Si (110) substrates, high fractions of nanovoids and nanotwins are formed. The void size and density can be tailored by varying deposition parameters, including argon pressure, deposition rate, and film thickness. Interestingly, nanovoids become absent in the polycrystalline Cu film deposited on Si (111) substrate, but they can be regained in the epitaxial nanotwinned Cu (111) when deposited on Si (111) substrate with an Ag seed layer. The nanovoid formation seems to be closely associated with twin nucleation and film texture. Based on the comparative studies between void-free polycrystalline Cu films and epitaxial nanotwinned Cu films with nanovoids, the underlying mechanisms for the formation of nanovoids are discussed within the framework of island coalescence model.

Mechanism Behind the Programmed Biosynthesis of Heterotrimeric Fungal Depside Thielavin A

Thielavin A (1) is a fungal depside composed of one 3-methylorsellinic acid and two 3,5-dimethylorsellinic acid units. It displays diverse biological activities. However, the mechanism underlying the assembly of the heterotrimeric structure of 1 remains to be clarified. In this study, we identified the polyketide synthase (PKS) involved in the biosynthesis of 1. This PKS, designated as ThiA, possesses an unusual domain organization with the C-methyltransferase (MT) domain situated at the C-terminus following the thioesterase (TE) domain. Our findings indicated that the TE domain is solely responsible for two rounds of ester bond formation, along with subsequent chain hydrolysis. We identified a plausible mechanism for TE-catalyzed reactions and obtained insights into how a single PKS can selectively yield a specific heterotrimeric product. In particular, the tandem acyl carrier protein domains of ThiA are critical for programmed methylation by the MT domain. Overall, this study highlighted the occurrence of highly optimized domain-domain communication within ThiA for the selective synthesis of 1, which can advance our understanding of the programming rules of fungal PKSs.

Artificial Photosynthetic System with Spatial Dual Reduction Site Enabling Enhanced Solar Hydrogen Production

Although S-scheme artificial photosynthesis shows promise for photocatalytic hydrogen production, traditional methods often overly concentrate on a single reduction site. This limitation results in inadequate redox capability and inefficient charge separation, which hampers the efficiency of the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction. To overcome this limitation, a double S-scheme system is proposed that leverages dual reduction sites, thereby preserving energetic photo-electrons and holes to enhance apparent quantum efficiency. The design features a double S-scheme junction consisting of CdS nanospheres decorated with anatase TiO2 nanoparticles coupled with graphitic C3 N4 . The as-prepared catalyst exhibits a hydrogen evolution rate of 26.84 mmol g-1  h-1 and an apparent quantum efficiency of 40.2% at 365 nm. This enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution is ascribed to the efficient charge separation and transport induced by the double S-scheme. Both theoretical calculations and comprehensive spectroscopy tests (both in situ and ex situ) affirm the efficient charge transport across the catalyst interface. Moreover, substituting the reduction-type catalyst CdS with other similar sulfides like ZnIn2 S4 , ZnS, MoS2 and In2 S3 further confirms the feasibility of the proposed double S-scheme configuration. The findings provide a pathway to designing more effective double S-scheme artificial photosynthetic systems, opening up fresh perspectives in enhancing photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance.

High-Fluidity/High-Strength Dual-Layer Gel Electrolytes Enable Ultra-Flexible and Dendrite-Free Fiber-Shaped Aqueous Zinc Metal Battery

Fiber-shaped aqueous zinc-ion batteries (FAZIBs) with intrinsic safety, highcapacity, and superb omnidirectional flexibility hold promise for wearable energy-supply devices. However, the interfacial separation of fiber-shaped electrodes and electrolytes caused by Zinc (Zn) stripping process and severe Zn dendrites occurring at the folded area under bending condition seriously restricts FAZIBs' practical application. Here, an advanced confinement encapsulation strategy is originally reported to construct dual-layer gel electrolyte consisting of high-fluidity polyvinyl alcohol-Zn acetate inner layer and high-strength Zn alginate outer layer for fiber-shaped Zn anode. Benefiting from the synergistic effect of inner-outer gel electrolyte and the formation of solid electrolyte interphase on Zn anode surface by lysine additive, the resulting fiber-shaped Zn-Zn symmetric cell delivers long cycling life over 800 h at 1 mA cm-2 with dynamic bending frequency of 0.1 Hz. The finite element simulation further confirms that dual-layer gel electrolyte can effectively suppress the interfacial separation arising from the Zn stripping and bending process. More importantly, a robust twisted fiber-shaped Zn/zinc hexacyanoferrate battery based on dual-layer gel electrolyte is successfully assembled, achieving a remarkable capacity retention of 97.7% after bending 500 cycles. Therefore, such novel dual-layer gel electrolyte design paves the way for the development of long-life fiber-shaped aqueous metal batteries.

Rational molecular design of multifunctional self-assembled monolayers for efficient hole selection and buried interface passivation in inverted perovskite solar cells

Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) have been widely employed as the bottom-contact hole-selective layer (HSL) in inverted perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Besides manipulating the electrical properties, molecularly engineering the SAM provides an opportunity to modulate the perovskite buried interface. Here, we successfully introduced Lewis-basic oxygen and sulfur heteroatoms through rational molecular design of asymmetric SAMs to obtain two novel multifunctional SAMs, CbzBF and CbzBT. Detailed characterization of single-crystal structures and device interfaces shows that enhanced packing, more effective ITO work function adjustment, and buried interface passivation were successfully achieved. Consequently, the champion PSC employing CbzBT showed an excellent power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 24.0% with a high fill factor of 84.41% and improved stability. This work demonstrates the feasibility of introducing defect-passivating heterocyclic groups into SAM molecules to help passivate the interfacial defects in PSCs. The insights gained from this molecular design strategy will accelerate the development of new multifunctional SAM HSLs for efficient PSCs.

A Functionally Asymmetric Janus Hygro-Photothermal Hybrid for Atmospheric Water Harvesting in Arid Regions

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are high-performance adsorbents for atmospheric water harvesting but have poor water-desorption ability, requiring excess energy input to release the trapped water. Addressing this issue, a Janus-structured adsorbent with functional asymmetry is presented. The material exhibits contrasting functionalities on either face - a hygroscopic face interfaced with a photothermal face. Hygroscopic aluminum fumarate MOF and photothermal Cux S layers are in-situ grown on opposite sides of a Cu/Al bimetallic substrate, resulting in a Cux S-Cu/Al-MOF Janus hygro-photothermal hybrid. The two faces serve as independent "factories" for photothermal conversion and water adsorption-desorption respectively, while the interfacing bimetallic layer serves as a "heat conveyor belt" between them. Due to the high porosity and hydrophilicity of the MOF, the hybrid exhibits a water-adsorption capacity of 0.161 g g-1 and a fast adsorption rate (saturation within 52 min) at 30% relative humidity. Thanks to the photothermal Cux S, the hybrid can reach 71.5 °C under 1 Sun in 20 min and desorb 97% adsorbed water in 40 min, exhibiting a high photothermal conversion efficiency of over 90%. Cux S-Cu/Al-MOF exhibits minimal fluctuations after 200 cycles, and its water-generation capacity is 3.21 times that of powdery MOF in 3 h in a self-designed prototype in one cycle.

A Metal-Free Helical Covalent Inorganic Polymer: Preparation, Crystal Structure and Optical Properties

Helical morphologies are widely observed in nature, however, it is very challenging to prepare artificial helical polymers. Especially, precisely understanding the structure information of artificial metal-free helical covalent inorganic polymers via single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) analysis is rarely explored. Here, we successfully prepare a novel metal-free helical covalent inorganic polymer ({[Te(C6 H5 )2 ] [PO3 (OH)]}n , named CityU-10) by introducing angular anions (HOPO3 2- ) into traditional tellurium-oxygen chains. The dynamic reversibility of the reaction is realized through the introduction of organic tellurium precursor and the slow hydrolysis of polyphosphoric acid. High-quality and large-size single crystals of CityU-10 have been successfully characterized via SCXRD, where the same-handed helical inorganic polymer chains form a pseudo-two-dimensional layer via multiple hydrogen-bonding interactions. The left-handed layers and right-handed layers alternatively stack together through weak hydrogen bonds to form a three-dimensional supramolecular structure. The single crystals of CityU-10 are found to display promising optical properties with a large birefringence. Our results would offer new guidelines for designing and preparing new crystalline covalent polymers through tellurium-based chemistry.

Comparison of actigraphy-measured and parent-reported sleep in association with weight status among preschool children

This study compared weekday and weekend actigraphy-measured and parent-reported sleep in relation to weight status among preschool-aged children. Participants were 3-6 years old preschoolers from the cross-sectional DAGIS-study with sleep data for ≥2 weekday and ≥2 weekend nights. Parents-reported sleep onset and wake-up times were gathered alongside 24 h hip-worn actigraphy. An unsupervised Hidden-Markov Model algorithm provided actigraphy-measured night time sleep without the guidance of reported sleep times. Waist-to-height ratio and age-and-sex-specific body mass index characterised weight status. Comparison of methods were assessed with consistency in quintile divisions and Spearman correlations. Associations between sleep and weight status were assessed with adjusted regression models. Participants included 638 children (49% girls) with a mean ± SD age of 4.76 ± 0.89. On weekdays, 98%-99% of actigraphy-measured and parent-reported sleep estimates were classified in the same or adjacent quintile and were strongly correlated (rs  = 0.79-0.85, p < 0.001). On weekends, 84%-98% of actigraphy-measured and parent-reported sleep estimates were respectively classified and correlations were moderate to strong (rs  = 0.62-0.86, p < 0.001). Compared with actigraphy-measured sleep, parent-reported sleep had consistently earlier onset, later wake-up, and greater duration. Earlier actigraphy-measured weekday sleep onset and midpoint were associated with a higher body mass index (respective β-estimates: -0.63, p < 0.01 and -0.75, p < 0.01) and waist-to-height ratio (-0.004, p = 0.03 and -0.01, p = 0.02). Though the sleep estimation methods were consistent and correlated, actigraphy measures should be favoured as they are more objective and sensitive to identifying associations between sleep timing and weight status compared with parent reports.

Structural Modification Strategies, Interfacial Charge-Carrier Dynamics, and Solar Energy Conversion Applications of Organic-Inorganic Halide Perovskite Photocatalysts

Over the past few decades, organic-inorganic halide perovskites (OIHPs) as novel photocatalyst materials have attracted intensive attention for an impressive variety of photocatalytic applications due to their excellent photophysical (chemical) properties. Regarding practical application and future commercialization, the air-water stability and photocatalytic performance of OIHPs need to be further improved. Accordingly, studying modification strategies and interfacial interaction mechanisms is crucial. In this review, the current progress in the development and photocatalytic fundamentals of OIHPs is summarized. Furthermore, the structural modification strategies of OIHPs, including dimensionality control, heterojunction design, encapsulation techniques, and so on for the enhancement of charge-carrier transfer and the enlargement of long-term stability, are elucidated. Subsequently, the interfacial mechanisms and charge-carrier dynamics of OIHPs during the photocatalytic process are systematically specified and classified via diverse photophysical and electrochemical characterization methods, such as time-resolved photoluminescence measurements, ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements, transient photocurrent densities, and so forth. Eventually, various photocatalytic applications of OIHPs, including hydrogen evolution, CO2 reduction, pollutant degradation, and photocatalytic conversion of organic matter.

Risky Sexual Behavior and Psychopathy: Testing the Relationship in a Non-Clinical Sample of Young Adults in Hong Kong

This study aims to investigate the relationship between risky sexual behavior (RSB) and psychopathy in a non-clinical sample of 714 Hong Kong adults, shedding light on sex differences. Our findings reveal that males exhibit significantly higher mean levels of RSB (general, penetrative, and nonpenetrative), as well as egocentric (Factor 1) and callous (Factor 3) traits of psychopathy, along with increased sexual desire compared to females. Regression analyses indicate that elevated levels of antisociality (Factor 2) and callousness (Factor 3) traits of psychopathy, along with sexual desire, emerge as significant risk factors for engaging in general, penetrative, and nonpenetrative RSB. Intriguingly, higher age and being in a long-term relationship are associated with RSB. The implications of this study suggest potential avenues for reducing, if not entirely preventing, the inclination to engage in RSB in the presence of psychopathic traits.

Preclinical Application of CEST MRI to Detect Early and Regional Tumor Response to Local Brain Tumor Treatment

Treating glioblastoma and monitoring treatment response non-invasively remain challenging. Here, we developed a robust approach using a drug-loaded liposomal hydrogel that is mechanically compatible with the brain, and, simultaneously, we successfully monitored early tumor response using Chemical Exchange Saturation Transfer (CEST) MRI. This CEST-detectable liposomal hydrogel was optimized based on a sustainable drug release and a soft hydrogel for the brain tumor, which is unfavorable for tumor cell proliferation. After injecting the hydrogel next to the tumor, three distinctive CEST contrasts enabled the monitoring of tumor response and drug release longitudinally at 3T. As a result, a continuous tumor volume decrease was observed in the treatment group along with a significant decrease in CEST contrasts relating to the tumor response at 3.5 ppm (Amide Proton Transfer; APT) and at -3.5 ppm (relayed Nuclear Overhauser Effect; rNOE) when compared to the control group (p < 0.05). Interestingly, the molecular change at 3.5 ppm on day 3 (p < 0.05) was found to be prior to the significant decrease in tumor volume on day 5. An APT signal also showed a strong correlation with the number of proliferating cells in the tumors. This demonstrated that APT detected a distinctive decrease in mobile proteins and peptides in tumors before the change in tumor morphology. Moreover, the APT signal showed a regional response to the treatment, associated with proliferating and apoptotic cells, which allowed an in-depth evaluation and prediction of the tumor treatment response. This newly developed liposomal hydrogel allows image-guided brain tumor treatment to address clinical needs using CEST MRI.

Battery-free, wireless, and electricity-driven soft swimmer for water quality and virus monitoring

Miniaturized mobile electronic system is an effective candidate for in situ exploration of confined spaces. However, realizing such system still faces challenges in powering issue, untethered mobility, wireless data acquisition, sensing versatility, and integration in small scales. Here, we report a battery-free, wireless, and miniaturized soft electromagnetic swimmer (SES) electronic system that achieves multiple monitoring capability in confined water environments. Through radio frequency powering, the battery-free SES system demonstrates untethered motions in confined spaces with considerable moving speed under resonance. This system adopts soft electronic technologies to integrate thin multifunctional bio/chemical sensors and wireless data acquisition module, and performs real-time water quality and virus contamination detection with demonstrated promising limits of detection and high sensitivity. All sensing data are transmitted synchronously and displayed on a smartphone graphical user interface via near-field communication. Overall, this wireless smart system demonstrates broad potential for confined space exploration, ranging from pathogen detection to pollution investigation.

Association of air pollution and weather conditions during infection course with COVID-19 case fatality rate in the United Kingdom

Although the relationship between the environmental factors, such as weather conditions and air pollution, and COVID-19 case fatality rate (CFR) has been found, the impacts of these factors to which infected cases are exposed at different infectious stages (e.g., virus exposure time, incubation period, and at or after symptom onset) are still unknown. Understanding this link can help reduce mortality rates. During the first wave of COVID-19 in the United Kingdom (UK), the CFR varied widely between and among the four countries of the UK, allowing such differential impacts to be assessed. We developed a generalized linear mixed-effect model combined with distributed lag nonlinear models to estimate the odds ratio of the weather factors (i.e., temperature, sunlight, relative humidity, and rainfall) and air pollution (i.e., ozone, [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text]) using data between March 26, 2020 and September 15, 2020 in the UK. After retrospectively time adjusted CFR was estimated using back-projection technique, the stepwise model selection method was used to choose the best model based on Akaike information criteria and the closeness between the predicted and observed values of CFR. The risk of death reached its maximum level when the low temperature (6 °C) occurred 1 day before (OR 1.59; 95% CI 1.52-1.63), prolonged sunlight duration (11-14 h) 3 days after (OR 1.24; 95% CI 1.18-1.30) and increased [Formula: see text] (19 μg/m3) 1 day after the onset of symptom (OR 1.12; 95% CI 1.09-1.16). After reopening, many COVID-19 cases will be identified after their symptoms appear. The findings highlight the importance of designing different preventive measures against severe illness or death considering the time before and after symptom onset.

Recent Advances in Pristine Iron Triad Metal-Organic Framework Cathodes for Alkali Metal-Ion Batteries

Pristine iron triad metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), i.e., Fe-MOFs, Co-MOFs, Ni-MOFs, and heterometallic iron triad MOFs, are utilized as versatile and promising cathodes for alkali metal-ion batteries, owing to their distinctive structure characteristics, including modifiable and designable composition, multi-electron redox-active sites, exceptional porosity, and stable construction facilitating rapid ion diffusion. Notably, pristine iron triad MOFs cathodes have recently achieved significant milestones in electrochemical energy storage due to their exceptional electrochemical properties. Here, the recent advances in pristine iron triad MOFs cathodes for alkali metal-ion batteries are summarized. The redox reaction mechanisms and essential strategies to boost the electrochemical behaviors in associated electrochemical energy storage devices are also explored. Furthermore, insights into the future prospects related to pristine iron triad MOFs cathodes for lithium-ion, sodium-ion, and potassium-ion batteries are also delivered.

The effect of aquaporin-4 inhibition on cerebrospinal fluid-tissue water exchange in mouse brain detected by magnetization transfer indirect spin labeling MRI

The fluid transport of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and interstitial fluid in surrounding tissues plays an important role in the drainage pathway that facilitates waste clearance from the brain. This pathway is known as the glymphatic or perivascular system, and its functions are dependent on aquaporin-4 (AQP4). Recently, magnetization transfer indirect spin labeling (MISL) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been proposed as a noninvasive and noncontrast-enhanced method for detecting water exchange between CSF and brain tissue. In this study, we first optimized the MISL sequence at preclinical 3 T MRI, and then studied the correlation of MISL in CSF with magnetization transfer (MT) in brain tissue, as well as the altered water exchange under AQP4 inhibition, using C57BL/6 mice. Results showed a strong correlation of MISL signal with MT signal. With the AQP4 inhibitor, we observed a significant decrease in MISL value (P < 0.05), suggesting that the hampered AQP4 activity led to decreased water exchange between CSF and brain tissue or the impairment of the glymphatic function. Overall, our findings demonstrate the potential application of MISL in assessing brain water exchange at 3 T MRI and its potential clinical translation.

Functional MXenes: Progress and Perspectives on Synthetic Strategies and Structure-Property Interplay for Next-Generation Technologies

MXenes are a class of 2D materials that include layered transition metal carbides, nitrides, and carbonitrides. Since their inception in 2011, they have garnered significant attention due to their diverse compositions, unique structures, and extraordinary properties, such as high specific surface areas and excellent electrical conductivity. This versatility has opened up immense potential in various fields, catalyzing a surge in MXene research and leading to note worthy advancements. This review offers an in-depth overview of the evolution of MXenes over the past 5 years, with an emphasis on synthetic strategies, structure-property relationships, and technological prospects. A classification scheme for MXene structures based on entropy is presented and an updated summary of the elemental constituents of the MXene family is provided, as documented in recent literature. Delving into the microscopic structure and synthesis routes, the intricate structure-property relationships are explored at the nano/micro level that dictate the macroscopic applications of MXenes. Through an extensive review of the latest representative works, the utilization of MXenes in energy, environmental, electronic, and biomedical fields is showcased, offering a glimpse into the current technological bottlenecks, such asstability, scalability, and device integration. Moreover, potential pathways for advancing MXenes toward next-generation technologies are highlighted.

Constructing Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Hierarchy Structure Derived from Metal-Organic Framework as High-Performance ORR Cathode Material for Zn-Air Battery

The development of efficient and low-cost catalysts for cathodic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in Zn-air battery (ZAB) is a key factor in reducing costs and achieving industrialization. Here, a novel segregated CoNiPt alloy embedded in N-doped porous carbon with a nanoflowers (NFs)-like hierarchy structure is synthesized through pyrolyzing Hofmann-type metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). The unique hierarchical NFs structure exposes more active sites and facilitates the transportation of reaction intermediates, thus accelerating the reaction kinetics. Impressively, the resulting 15% CoNiPt@C NFs catalyst exhibits outstanding alkaline ORR activity with a half-wave potential of 0.93 V, and its mass activity is 7.5 times higher than that of commercial Pt/C catalyst, surpassing state-of-the-art noble metal-based catalysts. Furthermore, the assembled CoNiPt@C+RuO2 ZAB demonstrates a maximum power density of 172 mW cm-2 , which is superior to that of commercial Pt/C+RuO2 ZAB. Experimental results reveal that the intrinsic ORR mass activity is attributed to the synergistic interaction between oxygen defects and pyrrolic/graphitic N species, which optimizes the adsorption energy of the intermediate species in the ORR process and greatly enhances catalytic activity. This work provides a practical and feasible strategy for synthesizing cost-effective alkaline ORR catalysts by optimizing the electronic structure of MOF-derived catalysts.

Perovskite Cathodes for Aqueous and Organic Iodine Batteries Operating Under One and Two Electrons Redox Modes

Although conversion-type iodine-based batteries are considered promising for energy storage systems, stable electrode materials are scarce, especially for high-performance multi-electron reactions. The use of tin-based iodine-rich 2D Dion-Jacobson (DJ) ODASnI4 (ODA: 1,8-octanediamine) perovskite materials as cathode materials for iodine-based batteries is suggested. As a proof of concept, organic lithium-perovskite and aqueous zinc-perovskite batteries are fabricated and they can be operated based on the conventional one-electron and advanced two-electron transfer modes. The active elemental iodine in the perovskite cathode provides capacity through a reversible I- /I+ redox pair conversion at full depth, and the rapid electron injection/extraction leads to excellent reaction kinetics. Consequently, high discharge plateaus (1.71 V vs Zn2+ /Zn; 3.41 V vs Li+ /Li), large capacity (421 mAh g-1 I ), and a low decay rate (1.74 mV mAh-1 g-1 I ) are achieved for lithium and zinc ion batteries, respectively. This study demonstrates the promising potential of perovskite materials for high-performance metal-iodine batteries. Their reactions based on the two-electron transfer mechanism shed light on similar battery systems aiming for decent operational stability and high energy density.
