Abstract
The reduction chemistry of thorium complexes is less explored compared to that of their uranium counterparts. Here, we report the synthesis, characterization, and reduction chemistry of two thorium(IV) complexes, (AdTPBN3)ThCl (1) and (DtbpTPBN3)ThCl(THF) (4) [RTPBN3 = 1,3,5-[2-(RN)C6H4]3C6H3; R = 1-adamantyl (Ad) or 3,5-di-tert-butylphenyl (Dtbp); THF = tetrahydrofuran], supported by tripodal tris(amido)arene ligands with different N-substituents. Reduction of 1 with excessive potassium in n-pentane yielded a double C-C coupling product, [(AdTPBN3)ThK(Et2O)2]2 (3), featuring a unique tetraanionic tricyclic core. On the other hand, reduction of 4 with 1 equiv of KC8 in hexanes/1,2-dimethoxyethane (DME) afforded a single C-C coupling product, [(DtbpTPBN3)Th(DME)]2 (5), with a dianionic bis(cyclohexadienyl) core. The solid- and solution-state structures of dinuclear thorium(IV) complexes 3 and 5 were established by X-ray crystallography and NMR spectroscopy. In addition, reactivity studies show that 3 and 5 can behave as thorium(II) and thorium(III) synthons to reduce organic halides. For instance, 3 and 5 are able to reduce 4 and 2 equiv of benzyl chloride, respectively, to regenerate 1 and 4 with concomitant formation of dibenzyl. Reversible C-C couplings under redox conditions provide an alternative approach to exploiting the potential of thorium arene complexes in redox chemistry.

Abstract
Two-electron oxidative addition is one of the most important elementary reactions for d-block transition metals but it is uncommon for f-block elements. Here, we report the first examples of intermolecular oxidative addition of E-H (E=C, N) bonds to uranium(II) centers. The transient U(II) species was formed in-situ by reducing a heterometallic cluster featuring U(IV)-Pd(0) bonds with potassium-graphite (KC8). Oxidative addition of C-H or N-H bonds to the U(II) centers was observed when this transient U(II) species was treated with benzene, carbazole or 1-adamantylamine, respectively. The U(II) centers could also react with tetracene, biphenylene or N2O, leading to the formation of arene reduced U(IV) products and uranyl(VI) species via two- or four-electron processes. This study demonstrates that the intermolecular two-electron oxidative addition reactions are viable for actinide elements.

Abstract
Halide exchange of (Cp3tms)2ThCl2 (1; Cp3tms = η5-1,2,4-(Me3Si)3C5H2) with Me3SiI furnishes (Cp3tms)2ThI2 (2), which is then reduced with potassium graphite (KC8) in the presence of 2,2'-bipyridine to give the thorium bipyridyl metallocene (Cp3tms)2Th(bipy) (3) in good yield. Complex 3 was fully characterized and readily reacted with various small molecules. For example, 3 may serve as a synthetic equivalent for the (Cp3tms)2Th(II) fragment when exposed to CuI, Ph2S2, organic azides, and CS2. Moreover, upon the addition of thiobenzophenone Ph2CS, p-methylbenzaldehyde (p-MeC6H4)CHO, benzophenone Ph2CO, amidate PhCONH(p-tolyl), seleno-ketone (p,p'-dimethoxy), selenobenzophenone (p-MeOPh)2CSe, di(p-tolyl)methanimine (p-tolyl)2C═NH, 1,2-di(benzylidene)hydrazine (PhCH═N)2, and nitriles PhCN, PhCH2CN, and Ph2CHCN C-C coupling results to give (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy)(Ph2CS)] (8), (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy)(p-MePhCHO)] (9), (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy)(Ph2CO)] (10), (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy){(p-tolylNH)(Ph)CO}] (11), (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy){(p-MeOPh)2CSe}] (12), (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy){(p-tolyl)2CNH}] (13), (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy)(PhCHNN═CHPh)] (14), (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy)(PhCN)] (16), (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy)(PhCH2CN)] (17), and (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy)(Ph2CHCN)] (18), respectively. However, when thiazole is added to 3, the dimeric sulfido complex [(Cp3tms)2Th]2[μ-(bipy)CH2NCHCHS]2 (15) can be isolated. Moreover, the addition of isonitriles such as Me3CNC and PhCH2NC to 3 results in C-N bond cleavage and C-C coupling processes to form the thorium isocyanido amido complexes (Cp3tms)2Th[4-(Me3C)bipy](NC) (19) and (Cp3tms)2Th[4-(PhCH2)bipy](NC) (20), respectively. Nevertheless, upon exposure of 3 to (trimethylsilyl)diazomethane Me3SiCHN2, the bis-amido complex (Cp3tms)2Th[5,6-(Me3SiCH)bipy] (21), concomitant with N2 release, is isolated.

Abstract
Thorium redox chemistry is extremely scarce due to the high stability of ThIV . Here we report two unique examples of thorium arenide complexes prepared by reduction of a ThIV -siloxide complex in presence of naphthalene, the mononuclear arenide complex [K(OSi(Ot Bu)3 )3 Th(η6 -C10 H8 )] (1) and the inverse-sandwich complex [K(OSi(Ot Bu)3 )3 Th]2 (μ-η6 ,η6 -C10 H8 )] (2). The electrons stored in these complexes allow the reduction of a broad range of substrates (N2 O, AdN3 , CO2 , HBBN). Higher reactivity was found for the complex 1 which reacts with the diazoolefin IDipp=CN2 to yield the unexpected ThIV amidoalkynyl complex 5 via a terminal N-heterocyclic vinylidene intermediate. This work showed that arenides can act as convenient redox-active ligands for implementing thorium-ligand cooperative multielectron transfer and that the reactivity can be tuned by the arenide binding mode.

Abstract
The reaction of a terminal Mo(II) nitride with a U(III) complex yields a heterodimetallic U-Mo nitride which is the first example of a transition metal-capped uranium nitride. The nitride is triply bonded to U(V) and singly bonded to Mo(0) and supports a U-Mo interaction. This compound shows reactivity toward CO oxidation.

Abstract
Radical-bridged diuranium complexes are desirable for their potential high exchange coupling and single molecule magnet (SMM) behavior, but remain rare. Here we report for the first time radical-bridged diuranium(iv) and diuranium(iii) complexes. Reaction of [U{N(SiMe3)2}3] with 2,2′-bipyrimidine (bpym) resulted in the formation of the bpym-bridged diuranium(iv) complex [{((Me3Si)2N)3UIV}2(μ-bpym2−)], 1. Reduction with 1 equiv. KC8 reduces the complex, affording [K(2.2.2-cryptand)][{((Me3Si)2N)3U}2(μ-bpym)], 2, which is best described as a radical-bridged UIII–bpym˙−–UIII complex. Further reduction of 1 with 2 equiv. KC8, affords [K(2.2.2-cryptand)]2[{((Me3Si)2N)3UIII}2(μ-bpym2−)], 3. Addition of AgBPh4 to complex 1 resulted in the oxidation of the ligand, yielding the radical-bridged complex [{((Me3Si)2N)3UIV}2(μ-bpym˙−)][BPh4], 4. X-ray crystallography, electrochemistry, susceptibility data, EPR and DFT/CASSCF calculations are in line with their assignments. In complexes 2 and 4 the presence of the radical-bridge leads to slow magnetic relaxation. Convenient routes to dinuclear complexes of uranium where two uranium centers are bridged by the redox-active ligand bpym were identified resulting in unique and stable radical-bridged dimetallic complexes of U(iii) and U(iv) showing SMM behaviour.![]()

Abstract
Multimetallic-multielectron cooperativity plays a key role in the metal-mediated cleavage of N2 to nitrides (N3−). In particular, low-valent uranium complexes coupled with strong alkali metal reducing agents can lead to N2 cleavage, but often, it is ambiguous how many electrons are transferred from the uranium centers to cleave N2. Herein, we designed new dinuclear uranium nitride complexes presenting a combination of electronically diverse ancillary ligands to promote the multielectron transformation of N2. Two heteroleptic diuranium nitride complexes, [K{UIV(OSi(OtBu)3)(N(SiMe3)2)2}2(μ-N)] (1) and [Cs{UIV(OSi(OtBu)3)2(N(SiMe3)2)}2(μ-N)] (3-Cs), containing different combinations of OSi(OtBu)3 and N(SiMe3)2 ancillary ligands, were synthesized. We found that both complexes could be reduced to their U(iii)/U(iv) analogues, and the complex, [K2{UIV/III(OSi(OtBu)3)2(N(SiMe3)2)}2(μ-N)] (6-K), could be further reduced to a putative U(iii)/U(iii) species that is capable of promoting the 4e− reduction of N2, yielding the N24−complex [K3{UV(OSi(OtBu)3)2(N(SiMe3)2)}2(μ-N)(μ-η2:η2-N2)], 7. Parallel N2 reduction pathways were also identified, leading to the isolation of N2 cleavage products, [K3{UVI(OSi(OtBu)3)2(N(SiMe3)2)(

Abstract
Addition of [UI2(THF)3(μ-OMe)]2·THF (2·THF) to THF solutions containing 6 equiv. of K[C14H10] generates the heteroleptic dimeric complexes [K(18-crown-6)(THF)2]2[U(η6-C14H10)(η4-C14H10)(μ-OMe)]2·4THF (118C6·4THF) and {[K(THF)3][U(η6-C14H10)(η4-C14H10)(μ-OMe)]}2 (1THF) upon crystallization of the products in THF in the presence or absence of 18-crown-6, respectively. Both 118C6·4THF and 1THF are thermally stable in the solid-state at room temperature; however, after crystallization, they become insoluble in THF or DME solutions and instead gradually decompose upon standing. X-ray diffraction analysis reveals 118C6·4THF and 1THF to be structurally similar, possessing uranium centres sandwiched between bent anthracenide ligands of mixed tetrahapto and hexahapto ligation modes. Yet, the two complexes are distinguished by the close contact potassium-arenide ion pairing that is seen in 1THF but absent in 118C6·4THF, which is observed to have a significant effect on the electronic characteristics of the two complexes. Structural analysis, SQUID magnetometry data, XANES spectral characterization, and computational analyses are generally consistent with U(iv) formal assignments for the metal centres in both 118C6·4THF and 1THF, though noticeable differences are detected between the two species. For instance, the effective magnetic moment of 1THF (3.74 μB) is significantly lower than that of 118C6·4THF (4.40 μB) at 300 K. Furthermore, the XANES data shows the U LIII-edge absorption energy for 1THF to be 0.9 eV higher than that of 118C6·4THF, suggestive of more oxidized metal centres in the former. Of note, CASSCF calculations on the model complex {[U(η6-C14H10)(η4-C14H10)(μ-OMe)]2}2− (1*) shows highly polarized uranium–arenide interactions defined by π-type bonds where the metal contributions are primarily comprised by the 6d-orbitals (7.3 ± 0.6%) with minor participation from the 5f-orbitals (1.5 ± 0.5%). These unique complexes provide new insights into actinide–arenide bonding interactions and show the sensitivity of the electronic structures of the uranium atoms to coordination sphere effects. Use of Chatt metal-arene protocols with uranium leads to the synthesis of the first well-characterized, unsupported actinide–arenide sandwich complexes. The electronic structures of the actinide centres show a key sensitivity to ion pairing effects.![]()

Abstract
Neutral arenes such as benzene have never been considered suitable ligands for electropositive actinide cations, yet we find that even simple UIII UX3 aryloxide complexes such as U(ODipp)3 bind and reduce arenes spontaneously at room temperature, forming inverse arene sandwich (IAS) complexes XnU(μ-C6D6)UXm (X = ODipp, n=2, m=3; X = OBMes2 n=m=2 or 3) (ODipp = OC6H3iPr2-2,6; Mes = 2,4,6-Me3-C6H2). In some of these cases, further arene reduction has occured as a result of X ligand redistribution. These unexpected spontaneous reactions explain the anomalous spectra and reported lack of further reactivity of strongly reducing UIII centers of U(ODipp)3. Phosphines that are not considered suitable ligands for actinides can catalyze the formation of the IAS complexes. This enables otherwise inaccessible asymmetric and less congested IAS complexes to be isolated and the bonding in this series compared.

Abstract
Synthetic studies of bimetallic uranium nitride complexes with the N(SiMe3)2 ligand have generated a new nitride complex of U(III), which is highly reactive toward C-H bonds and H2. Treatment of the previously reported U(IV)/U(IV) nitride complex [Na(DME)3][((Me3Si)2N)2U(μ-N)(μ-κ2:CN̵-CH2SiMe2NSiMe3)U(N(SiMe3)2)2] (DME = 1,2-dimethoxyethane), 1, with 2 equiv of HNEt3BPh3 yielded the cationic U(IV)/U(IV) nitride complex, [{((Me3Si)2N)2U(THF)}2(μ-N)][BPh4] (THF = tetrahydrofuran), 3, by successive protonolysis of one N(SiMe3)2 ligand and the uranium-methylene bond. Reduction of 3 with KC8 afforded a rare example of a U(III) nitride, namely, the U(III)/U(IV) complex, [{((Me3Si)2N)2U(THF)}2(μ-N)], 4. Complex 4 is highly reactive and undergoes 1,2-addition of the C-H bond of the N(SiMe3)2 ligand across the uranium-nitride moiety to give the U(III)/U(IV) imide cyclometalate complex, [((Me3Si)2N)2(THF)U(μ-NH)(μ-κ2:C,N̵-CH2SiMe2NSiMe3)U(N(SiMe3)2))(THF)], 5. Complex 4 also reacts with toluene at -80 °C to yield an inverse sandwich imide complex arising from C-H bond activation of toluene, [{((Me3Si)2N)2U(THF)}2(μ-N)][{((Me3Si)2N)3U(μ-NH)U(N(SiMe3)2)}2(C7H8)], 6. Complex 4 effects the heterolytic cleavage of the C-H of phenylacetylene to yield the imide acetylide [{((Me3Si)2N)2U(THF)}2(μ-N)][((Me3Si)2N)2U(η1-CCPh)(μ2-NH)(μ2-η2:η1-CCPh)U(N(SiMe3)2)2], 7. Complex 4 also reacts with H2 to produce an imide hydride U(III)/U(IV) complex, [{((Me3Si)2N)2U(THF)}2(μ-NH)(μ-H)], 9. These data demonstrate that nitride complexes of U(III) are accessible with amide ligands and show the high reactivity of molecular U(III) nitrides in C-H bond activation.

Abstract
The dinuclear SmII complex [Sm2L4(dme)] (L = OSi(OtBu)3) reacts slowly with toluene, resulting in the isolation of the triple decker arene-bridged SmII complex [{Sm2L3}2(μ-η6:η6-C7H8)] in 44% yield. This reactivity provides the first example of an unambiguous arene reduction by an isolated SmII species.

Abstract
Organometallic multi-decker sandwich complexes containing f-elements remain rare, despite their attractive magnetic and electronic properties. The reduction of the CeIII siloxide complex, [KCeL4 ] (1; L=OSi(OtBu)3 ), with excess potassium in a THF/toluene mixture afforded a quadruple-decker arene-bridged complex, [K(2.2.2-crypt)]2 [{(KL3 Ce)(μ-η6 :η6 -C7 H8 )}2 Ce] (3). The structure of 3 features a [Ce(C7 H8 )2 ] sandwich capped by [KL3 Ce] moieties with a linear arrangement of the Ce ions. Structural parameters, UV/Vis/NIR data, and DFT studies indicate the presence of CeII ions involved in δ bonding between the Ce cations and toluene dianions. Complex 3 is a rare lanthanide multi-decker complex and the first containing non-classical divalent lanthanide ions. Moreover, oxidation of 1 by AgOTf (OTf=O3 SCF3 ) yielded the CeIV complex, [CeL4 ] (2), showing that siloxide ligands can stabilize Ce in three oxidation states.

Abstract
Functionalization of the uranyl moiety (UO2(2+)) in Cp*UO2((Mes)PDI(Me)) (1-PDI) ((Mes)PDI(Me) = 2,6-((Mes)N=CMe)2C5H3N; Mes = 2,4,6-triphenylmethyl), which bears a reduced, monoanionic pyridine(diimine) ligand, is reported. Silylating reagents, R3Si-X (R = Me, X = Cl, I, OTf, SPh; R = Ph, X = Cl), effectively add across the strong O=U=O bonds in the presence of the Lewis base, OPPh3, generating products of the form (R3SiO)2UX2(OPPh3)2 (R = Me, X = I (2-OPPh3), Cl (3-OPPh3), SPh (5-OPPh3), OTf (6-OPPh3); R = Ph, X = Cl (4-OPPh3)). During this transformation, reduction to uranium(iv) occurs with loss of (Cp*)2 and (Mes)PDI(Me), each of which acts as a one-electron source. In the reaction, the Lewis base serves to activate the silyl halide, generating a more electrophilic silyl group, as determined by (29)Si NMR spectroscopy, that undergoes facile transfer to the oxo groups. Complete U-O bond scission was accomplished by treating the uranium(iv) disiloxide compounds with additional silylating reagent, forming the family (Ph3PO)2UX4. All compounds were characterized by (1)H NMR, infrared, and electronic absorption spectroscopies. X-ray crystallographic characterization was used to elucidate the structures of 2-OPPh3, 4-OPPh3, 5-OPPh3, and 6-OPPh3.

Abstract
The synthesis and characterization of (bipy)(2)U(N[t-Bu]Ar)(2) (1-(bipy)(2), bipy = 2,2'-bipyridyl, Ar = 3,5-C(6)H(3)Me(2)), (bipy)U(N[(1)Ad]Ar)(3) (2-bipy), (bipy)(2)U(NC[t-Bu]Mes)(3) (3-(bipy)(2), Mes = 2,4,6-C(6)H(2)Me(3)), and IU(bipy)(NC[t-Bu]Mes)(3) (3-I-bipy) are reported. X-ray crystallography studies indicate that bipy coordinates as a radical anion in 1-(bipy)(2) and 2-bipy, and as a neutral ligand in 3-I-bipy. In 3-(bipy)(2), one of the bipy ligands is best viewed as a radical anion, the other as a neutral ligand. The electronic structure assignments are supported by NMR spectroscopy studies of exchange experiments with 4,4'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridyl and also by optical spectroscopy. In all complexes, uranium was assigned a +4 formal oxidation state.

Abstract
A new option for stabilizing unusual Ln2+ ions has been identified in the reaction of Cp'3Ln, 1-Ln (Ln = La, Ce; Cp' = C5H4SiMe3), with potassium graphite (KC8) in benzene in the presence of 2.2.2-cryptand. This generates [K(2.2.2-cryptand)]2[(Cp'2Ln)2(μ-η6:η6-C6H6)], 2-Ln, complexes that contain La and Ce in the formal +2 oxidation state. These complexes expand the range of coordination environments known for these ions beyond the previously established examples, (Cp''3Ln)1- and (Cp'3Ln)1- (Cp'' = C5H3(SiMe3)2-1,3), and generalize the viability of using three anionic carbocyclic rings to stabilize highly reactive Ln2+ ions. In 2-Ln, a non-planar bridging (C6H6)2- ligand shared between two metals takes the place of a cyclopentadienyl ligand in (Cp'3Ln)1-. The intensely colored (ε = ∼8000 M-1 cm-1) 2-Ln complexes react as four electron reductants with two equiv. of naphthalene to produce two equiv. of the reduced naphthalenide complex, [K(2.2.2-cryptand)][Cp'2Ln(η4-C10H8)].

Abstract
New tris-amidinate actinide (Th, U) complexes containing a rare O-bound terminal phosphaethynolate (OCP - ) ligand were synthesized and fully characterized. The cyanate (OCN - ) and thiocyanate (SCN - ) analogs were prepared for comparison and feature a preferential N-coordination to the actinide metals. The Th(amid)3(OCP) complex reacts with Ni(COD)2 to yield the heterobimetallic adduct (amid) 3 Th(μ-η 1 (O):η 2 (C,P)-OCP)Ni(COD) featuring an unprecedented reduced (OCP - ) bent fragment bridging the two metals.

Abstract
Prior to the year 2000, non-aqueous uranium chemistry mainly involved metallocene and classical alkyl, amide, or alkoxide compounds as well as established carbene, imido, and oxo derivatives. Since then, there has been a resurgence of the area, and dramatic developments of supporting ligands and multiply bonded ligand types, small-molecule activation, and magnetism have been reported. This Review 1) introduces the reader to some of the specialist theories of the area, 2) covers all-important starting materials, 3) surveys contemporary ligand classes installed at uranium, including alkyl, aryl, arene, carbene, amide, imide, nitride, alkoxide, aryloxide, and oxo compounds, 4) describes advances in the area of single-molecule magnetism, and 5) summarizes the coordination and activation of small molecules, including carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, nitric oxide, dinitrogen, white phosphorus, and alkanes.

Abstract
The diuranium(III) compound [UN''2]2(μ-η(6):η(6)-C6H6) (N''=N(SiMe3)2) has been studied using variable, high-pressure single-crystal X-ray crystallography, and density functional theory . In this compound, the low-coordinate metal cations are coupled through π- and δ-symmetric arene overlap and show close metal-CH contacts with the flexible methyl CH groups of the sterically encumbered amido ligands. The metal-metal separation decreases with increasing pressure, but the most significant structural changes are to the close contacts between ligand CH bonds and the U centers. Although the interatomic distances are suggestive of agostic-type interactions between the U and ligand peripheral CH groups, QTAIM (quantum theory of atoms-in-molecules) computational analysis suggests that there is no such interaction at ambient pressure. However, QTAIM and NBO analyses indicate that the interaction becomes agostic at 3.2 GPa.

Abstract
Multimetallic cooperativity plays an important role in U(iii) mediated CS2reduction: the reductive dimerization of CS2occurs preferentially at a heterodimetallic U, K complex while the reductive disproportionation pathway is favoured by the “ate” complex [K(18c6)][U(OSi(OtBu)3)4].

Abstract
One electron oxidation of a neutral diniobium benzene complex leads to a mixed-valence species. Single crystal X-ray diffraction, EPR, L3,2-edge XANES, and DFT indicate that the unpaired electron is localized on one metal center.
Reaction of the neutral diniobium benzene complex {[Nb(BDI)NtBu]2(μ-C6H6)} (BDI = N,N′-diisopropylbenzene-β-diketiminate) with Ag[B(C6F5)4] results in a single electron oxidation to produce a cationic diniobium arene complex, {[Nb(BDI)NtBu]2(μ-C6H6)}{B(C6F5)4}. Investigation of the solid state and solution phase structure using single-crystal X-ray diffraction, cyclic voltammetry, magnetic susceptibility, and multinuclear NMR spectroscopy indicates that the oxidation results in an asymmetric molecule with two chemically inequivalent Nb atoms. Further characterization using density functional theory (DFT) calculations, UV-visible, Nb L3,2-edge X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES), and EPR spectroscopies supports assignment of a diniobium complex, in which one Nb atom carries a single unpaired electron that is not largely delocalized on the second Nb atom. During the oxidative transformation, one electron is removed from the δ-bonding HOMO, which causes a destabilization of the molecule and formation of an asymmetric product. Subsequent reactivity studies indicate that the oxidized product allows access to metal-based chemistry with substrates that did not exhibit reactivity with the starting neutral complex.
