Abstract
Homoleptic tetramethylaluminates Ln(AlMe4)3 react with KTptBu,Me (TptBu,Me = tris(3-tBu-5-Me-pyrazolyl)borato) to yield rare-earth-metal methylidene complexes (TptBu,Me)Ln(μ3-CH2)[(μ-Me)AlMe2]2 (Ln = La, Ce, Nd). The lanthanum reaction is prone to additional C-H- and B-N-bond activation, affording coproducts La[HB(pzMe,tBu)(pzCMe2,Me)2][(μ-CH2)(μ-Me)AlMe2]2 and [La(μ-pztBu,Me)(AlMe4)2]2 (pztBu,Me = 3-tBu-5-Me-pyrazolato). The protonolysis reaction of Ln(AlMe4)3 and HpztBu,Me provides more efficient access to [Ln(μ-pztBu,Me)(AlMe4)2]2 (Ln = La, Nd). Treatment of Ln(AlMe4)3 with KTpMe,Me led to methylidene complexes (TpMe,Me)Ln(μ3-CH2)[(μ-Me)AlMe2]2 (Ln = Nd, Sm) or bis(tetramethylaluminate) complexes (TpMe,Me)Ln(AlMe4)2 (Ln = Y, Lu). The neodymium reaction generated methine derivative (TpMe,Me)Nd[(μ4-CH)(AlMe2)2(μ-pz,Me,Me)][(μ-Me)AlMe2] as a minor coproduct. The reaction of Ln(GaMe4)3 (Ln = Y, La, Ce, Nd, Sm, Ho) with HTptBu,Me gave methylidene complexes (TptBu,Me)Ln(μ3-CH2)[(μ-Me)GaMe2]2 (Ln = La, Ce, Nd, Sm) and alkyl complexes (TptBu,Me)LnMe[(μ-Me)GaMe3] (Ln = Y, Ho), while competing B-N bond activation reactions produced GaMe2[BH(Me)(μ-pztBu,Me)2] and (TptBu,Me)Ln(η2-pztBu,Me)[(μ-Me)GaMe3] (Ln = Y, Ho). The steric impact of the TpR,Me ligands was examined by cone angle calculations. Rare-earth-metal methylidene complexes (TptBu,Me)Ln(μ3-CH2)[(μ-Me)EMe2]2 (E = Al, Ga) successfully promote carbonyl methylenation reactions upon addition of ketone.

Abstract
Terminal rare-earth-metal imide complexes TptBu,MeLn(NC6H3iPr2-2,6)(dmap) of the mid-late rare-earth elements dysprosium and holmium were synthesized via double methane elimination of Lewis acid stabilized dialkyl precursors TptBu,MeLnMe(GaMe4) with primary aniline derivative H2NC6H3iPr2-2,6 (H2NAriPr). Exploiting the weaker Ln-CH3⋯[GaMe3] interaction compared to the aluminium congener, addition of the aniline derivative leads to the mixed methyl/anilido species TptBu,MeLnMe(HNAriPr) which readily eliminate methane after being exposed to the Lewis base DMAP ([double bond, length as m-dash]N,N-dimethyl-4-aminopyridine). Under the same conditions, [AlMe3]-stabilized dimethyl rare-earth-metal complexes transform immediately to Lewis acid bridged imides TptBu,MeLn(μ2-NC6H3Me2-2,6)(μ2-Me)AlMe2 (Ln = Dy, Ho). DMAP/THF donor exchange is accomplished by treatment of TptBu,MeLn(NC6H3iPr2-2,6)(dmap) with 9-BBN in THF while the terminal imides readily insert carbon dioxide to afford carbamate complexes.

Abstract
Terminal, nondirectional ionic "multiple" bond interactions between group 15 elements and rare-earth metals (Ln) have remained a challenging target until present. Although reports on terminal imide species have accumulated in the meantime, examples of terminal congeners with the higher homologue phosphorus are yet elusive. Herein, we present the synthesis of the first terminal yttrium organophosphinidene complex, TptBu,MeY(═PC6H3iPr2-2,6)(DMAP)2, according to a double-deprotonation sequence previously established for organoimides of the smaller rare-earth metals. Subsequent deprotonation of the primary phosphane H2PC6H3iPr2-2,6 (H2PAriPr) with discrete dimethyl compound TptBu,MeYMe2 in the presence of DMAP under simultaneous methane elimination generated a terminal multiply bonded phosphorus. The primary phosphide intermediates TptBu,MeYMe(HPAriPr) and TptBu,MeYMe(HNPAriPr)(DMAP) are isolable species and were also obtained and fully characterized for holmium and dysprosium. The Lewis acid-stabilized yttrium phosphinidene TptBu,MeY[(μ2-PAriPr)(μ2-Me)AlMe2] was obtained by treatment of H2PAriPr with TptBu,MeYMe(AlMe4) but could not be converted into a terminal phosphinidene via cleavage of trimethylaluminum. The corresponding reaction of H2PAriPr with TptBu,MeYMe(GaMe4) led to adduct [GaMe3(PH2AriPr)] rather than to the formation of a yttrium phosphinidene. The yttrium-phosphorus interaction in the obtained organophosphide and phosphinidene complexes was scrutinized by 31P/89Y NMR spectroscopy and DFT calculations, unambiguously supporting the existence of multiple bonding.

Abstract
Transmetallation of [VCl3(THF)3] and [TlTptBu,Me] afforded [(TptBu,Me)VCl2] (1, TptBu,Me = hydro-tris(3-tert-butyl-5-methylpyrazol-1-yl)borate), which was reduced with KC8 to form a C3v symmetric VII complex, [(TptBu,Me)VCl] (2). Complex 1 has a high-spin (S = 1) ground state and displays rhombic high-frequency and -field electron paramagnetic resonance (HFEPR) spectra, while complex 2 has an S = 3/2 4A2 ground state observable by conventional EPR spectroscopy. Complex 1 reacts with NaN3 to form the VV nitride-azide complex [(TptBu,Me)V≡N(N3)] (3). A likely VIII azide intermediate en route to 3, [(TptBu,Me)VCl(N3)] (4), was isolated by reacting 1 with N3SiMe3. Complex 4 is thermally stable but reacts with NaN3 to form 3, implying a bis-azide intermediate, [(TptBu,Me)V(N3)2] (A), leading to 3. Reduction of 3 with KC8 furnishes a trinuclear and mixed-valent nitride, [{(TptBu,Me)V}2(μ4-VN4)] (5), conforming to a Robin-Day class I description. Complex 5 features a central vanadium ion supported only by bridging nitride ligands. Contrary to 1, complex 2 reacts with NaN3 to produce an azide-bridged dimer, [{(TptBu,Me)V}2(1,3-μ2-N3)2] (6), with two antiferromagnetically coupled high-spin VII ions. Complex 5 could be independently produced along with [(κ2-TptBu,Me)2V] upon photolysis of 6 in arene solvents. The putative {VIV≡N} intermediate, [(TptBu,Me)V≡N] (B), was intercepted by photolyzing 6 in a coordinating solvent, such as tetrahydrofuran (THF), yielding [(TptBu,Me)V≡N(THF)] (B-THF). In arene solvents, B-THF expels THF to afford 5 and [(κ2-TptBu,Me)2V]. A more stable adduct (B-OPPh3) was prepared by reacting B-THF with OPPh3. These adducts of B are the first neutral and mononuclear VIV nitride complexes to be isolated.

Abstract
Group 3- and 4f-element organometallic chemistry and reactivity are decisively driven by the rare-earth-metal/lanthanide (Ln) ion size and associated electronegativity/ionicity/Lewis acidity criteria. For these reasons, the synthesis of terminal "unsupported" imides [Ln═NR] of the smaller, closed-shell Sc(III), Lu(III), Y(III), and increasingly covalent Ce(IV) has involved distinct reaction protocols while derivatives of the "early" large Ln(III) have remained elusive. Herein, we report such terminal imides of open-shell lanthanide cations Ce(III), Nd(III), and Sm(III) according to a new reaction protocol. Lewis-acid-stabilized methylidene complexes [TptBu,MeLn(μ3-CH2){(μ2-Me)MMe2}2] (Ln = Ce, Nd, Sm; M = Al, Ga) react with 2,6-diisopropylaniline (H2NAriPr) via methane elimination. The formation of arylimide complexes is governed by the Ln(III) size, the Lewis acidity of the group 13 metal alkyl, steric factors, the presence of a donor solvent, and the sterics and acidity (pKa) of the aromatic amine. Crucially, terminal arylimides [TptBu,MeLn(═NAriPr)(THF)2] (Ln = Ce, Nd, Sm) are formed only for M = Ga, and for M = Al, the Lewis-acid-stabilized imides [TptBu,MeLn(NAriPr)(AlMe3)] (Ln = Ce, Nd, Sm) are persistent. In stark contrast, the [GaMe3]-stabilized imide [TptBu,MeLn(NAriPr)(GaMe3)] (Ln = Nd, Sm) is reversibly formed in noncoordinating solvents.

Abstract
Exploring new lanthanide metallacycles and finding their unique chemistry different from the analogues of transition metals are of great interest and importance. In this work, we reported the synthesis, characterization, and reactivity toward nitriles of two lanthanide metallacyclopropenes: lutetacyclopropene 2a and dysprosacyclopropene 2b. The selective coupling of 2a and three molecules of PhCN was found for the first time to provide the unexpected fused lutetacycle 3a with one 1,6-dihydropyrimidine ring. Mechanistic studies by DFT calculations reveal that the triple insertion of PhCN into 2a proceeds through four key steps: the insertion of the first PhCN into 2a giving azalutetacyclopentadiene IM1, the insertion of the second PhCN into the Lu-N bond of IM1, the intramolecular electrocyclization providing a highly strained η2-pyrimidine metallacycle, and the insertion of the third PhCN into the Lu-Csp3 bond. Isolation and characterization of two active intermediates, azalutetacyclopentadiene IM1 and η2-pyrimidine dysprosacycle, provide critical evidence for the formation of 3a. Furthermore, IM1 was also reported to react with TMSCN, isocyanides, or W(CO)6 to furnish the fused [4,5] lutetacycles. The chemistry of two lanthanide metallacyclopropenes with nitriles is significantly different from these metallacyclopropenes of scandium and other metals. Most notably, the azalutetacyclopentadienes, η2-pyrimidine complex, and other metallacycles all represent the first examples in rare-earth organometallic chemistry; the formation of these new lutetacycles provides concrete evidence for understanding the mechanism of transition metal promoted or catalyzed [2+2+2] cycloaddition between alkynes and nitriles.

Abstract
The cerium(IV) pyrazolate complexes [Ce(Me2 pz)4 ]2 and [Ce(Me2 pz)4 (thf)] initiate β-hydride abstraction of the bis(dimethylsilyl)amido moiety, to afford a heteroleptic cerium(IV) species containing a dimethylpyrazolyl-substituted silylamido ligand, namely [Ce(Me2 pz)3 (bpsa)] (bpsa=bis((3,5-dimethylpyrazol-1-yl)dimethylsilyl)amido; Me2 pz =3,5-dimethylpyrazolato), along with some cerium(III) species. Remarkably, the nucleophilic attack of the pyrazolyl at the silicon atom and concomitant Si-H-bond cleavage is restricted to the tetravalent cerium oxidation state and appears to proceed via the formation of a transient cerium(IV) hydride, which engages in immediate redox chemistry. When [Ce(Me2 pz)4 ]2 is treated with [Li{N(SiMe3 )2 }], that is, in the absence of the SiH functionality, any redox chemistry did not occur. Instead, the ceric ate complex [LiCe2 (Me2 pz)9 ] and the stable mixed-ligand ceric species [Ce(Me2 pz)2 {N(SiMe3 )2 }2 ] were obtained.

A heteroleptic barium aminobenzyl complex [(TpAd,iPr)Ba(o-CH2C6H4-NMe2)] (1) was obtained in excellent yield from a simple one-pot reaction. Treatment of [(TpAd,iPr)Ba(o-CH2C6H4-NMe2)] (1) with two equivalents of AlR3 (R = Me, Et) led to the formation of barium tetraalkylaluminate complexes [(TpAd,iPr)Ba(AlR4)]n (R = Me, n = 2, 2; R = Et, n = 1, 3) as dimers or monomers in the solid state. The TpAd,iPr ligand-free peralkylated barium complex [Ba(AlEt4)2]n was isolated by the addition of ten equivalents of AlEt3 under the same conditions. The donor-induced aluminate cleavage is not applicable when donor solvents are added to complexes 2 and 3. In the solution of complexes 2 and 3, the alkylaluminate moieties and TpAd,iPr ligands show a rapid fluxional behavior in [D8]toluene solution over the temperature range of -70 to 25 °C, without any significant decoalescence of the corresponding proton signals.

Abstract
A series of solvent-free heteroleptic terminal rare-earth-metal alkyl complexes stabilized by a superbulky tris(pyrazolyl)borato ligand with the general formula [TptBu,Me LnMeR] have been synthesized and fully characterized. Treatment of the heterobimetallic mixed methyl/tetramethylaluminate compounds [TptBu,Me LnMe(AlMe4 )] (Ln=Y, Lu) with two equivalents of the mild halogenido transfer reagents SiMe3 X (X=Cl, I) gave [TptBu,Me LnX2 ] in high yields. The addition of only one equivalent of SiMe3 Cl to [TptBu,Me LuMe(AlMe4 )] selectively afforded the desired mixed methyl/chloride complex [TptBu,Me LuMeCl]. Further reactivity studies of [TptBu,Me LuMeCl] with LiR or KR (R=CH2 Ph, CH2 SiMe3 ) through salt metathesis led to the monomeric mixed-alkyl derivatives [TptBu,Me LuMe(CH2 SiMe3 )] and [TptBu,Me LuMe(CH2 Ph)], respectively, in good yields. The SiMe4 elimination protocols were also applicable when using SiMe3 X featuring more weakly coordinating moieties (here X=OTf, NTf2 ). X-ray structure analyses of this diverse set of new [TptBu,Me LnMeR/X] compounds were performed to reveal any electronic and steric effects of the varying monoanionic ligands R and X, including exact cone-angle calculations of the tridentate tris(pyrazolyl)borato ligand. Deeper insights into the reactivity of these potential precursors for terminal alkylidene rare-earth-metal complexes were gained through NMR spectroscopic studies.
