Intramolecular CN Bond Activation and Ring-Expansion Reactions of N-Heterocyclic Carbenes

NHC aluminum chemistry on the rise

This perspective highlights recent developments of the use of N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) and cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbenes (cAACs) in alane and aluminum organyl chemistry. Especially in the last few years this flourishing research field led to some remarkable discoveries including various substitution patterns at the central aluminum atom, different oxidation states, neutral and charged compounds with varying coordination numbers and unique reactivities. Thereby NHCs play a vital role in the stabilization of these otherwise highly reactive compounds, which would not be realizable without the use of this intriguing class of ligands. Nevertheless, main group hydrides and especially NHC ligated alanes also tend to undergo NHC decomposition reactions, which are part of ongoing research and provide important information for NHC research in general.

How to Decarbonize N-Heterocyclic Carbenes (NHCs): The simple Alane Adducts (NHC) ⋅ AlR3 (R=H, Me, Et)

The reaction of the amine-stabilized alane (NMe3) ⋅ AlH3 1 with the backbone-saturated N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) SIDipp (SIDipp=1,3-bis-{2,6-di-iso-propyl-phenyl}-imidazolidin-2-ylidene) at 0 °C yielded the NHC alane adduct (SIDipp) ⋅ AlH3 2. Reaction at elevated temperatures or prolonged reaction at room temperature gave the product of a ring expansion reaction (RER) of the NHC, (NMe3) ⋅ AlH(RER-SIDippH2) 3 ⋅ (NMe3). Subsequent reaction of the latter with sterically less hindered NHCs (IMeMe {=1,3,4,5-tetramethyl-imidazolin-2-ylidene}, IiPrMe {=1,3-di-iso-propyl-4,5-dimethyl-imidazolin-2-ylidene}, and IiPr {=1,3-di-iso-propyl-imidazolin-2-ylidene}) afforded the NHC-stabilized RER-products (NHC) ⋅ AlH(RER-SIDippH2) 3 ⋅ (NHC) (NHC=IMeMe, IiPrMe, IiPr), while no reaction was observed with the sterically more demanding NHCs IDipp (=1,3-bis-{2,6-di-iso-propyl-phenyl}-imidazolin-2-ylidene), SIDipp and ItBu (=1,3-di-tert-butyl-imidazolin-2-ylidene). The compounds 3 ⋅ (NHC) were also obtained starting from (SIDipp) ⋅ AlH3 2 and NHC at room temperature. Heating solutions of (SIDipp) ⋅ AlH3 2 without additional base to 95 °C resulted in decarbonization of the NHC and substitution of the carbene carbon atom with aluminum hydride under loss of ethene. Subsequent dimerization afforded cis-[AlH{μ-N(Dipp)CH2CH2N(Dipp)}]2 4_dimer. Heating solutions of the NHC-ligated aluminum alkyls (SIDipp) ⋅ AlR3 2R (R=Me, Et) to 145 °C instead led to complete scission of the NHC backbone with evolution of ethene and isolation of the dialkylaluminium(III) amidinates {DippNC(R)NDipp}AlR2 5R (R=Me, Et).

Activation of Ge-H and Sn-H Bonds with N-Heterocyclic Carbenes and a Cyclic (Alkyl)(amino)carbene

A study of the reactivity of several N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) and the cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbene 1-(2,6-di-iso-propylphenyl)-3,3,5,5-tetramethyl-pyrrolidin-2-ylidene (cAAC^Me ) with the group 14 hydrides GeH₂ Mes₂ and SnH₂ Me₂ (Me=CH₃ , Mes=1,3,5-(CH₃ )₃ C₆ H₂ ) is presented. The reaction of GeH₂ Mes₂ with cAAC^Me led to the insertion of cAAC^Me into one Ge-H bond to give cAAC^Me H-GeHMes₂ (1). If 1,3,4,5-tetramethyl-imidazolin-2-ylidene (Me₂ Im^Me ) was used as the carbene, NHC-mediated dehydrogenative coupling occurred, which led to the NHC-stabilized germylene Me₂ Im^Me ⋅GeMes₂ (2). The reaction of SnH₂ Me₂ with cAAC^Me also afforded the insertion product cAAC^Me H-SnHMe₂ (3), and reaction of two equivalents Me₂ Im^Me with SnH₂ Me₂ gave the NHC-stabilized stannylene Me₂ Im^Me ⋅SnMe₂ (4). If the sterically more demanding NHCs Me₂ Im^Me , 1,3-di-isopropyl-4,5-dimethyl-imidazolin-2-ylidene (iPr₂ Im^Me ) and 1,3-bis-(2,6-di-isopropylphenyl)-imidazolin-2-ylidene (Dipp₂ Im) were employed, selective formation of cyclic oligomers (SnMe₂ )_n (5; n=5-8) in high yield was observed. These cyclic oligomers were also obtained from the controlled decomposition of cAAC^Me H-SnHMe₂ (3).

N-heterocyclic carbene and cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbene adducts of plumbanes and plumbylenes

Lewis-acid/base adducts of N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) and the cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbene cAAC^Me (1-(2,6-di-iso-propylphenyl)-3,3,5,5-tetramethyl-pyrrolidin-2-ylidene) with selected lead(II) and lead(IV) compounds are presented. The reaction of the NHCs Me₂Im^Me (1,3,4,5-tetramethyl-imidazolin-2-ylidene), iPr₂Im^Me (1,3-di-isopropyl-4,5-dimethyl-imidazolin-2-ylidene), Dipp₂Im (1,3-bis-(2,6-di-isopropylphenyl)-imidazolin-2-ylidene) and cAAC^Me (1-(2,6-di-iso-propylphenyl)-3,3,5,5-tetramethyl-pyrrolidin-2-ylidene) with PbI₂ yielded the NHC-containing plumbylenes NHC·PbI₂ (NHC = Me₂Im^Me (1), iPr₂Im^Me (2), Dipp₂Im (3) and cAAC^Me·PbI₂ (4)). Using the Pb(IV) compound PbCl₂Ph₂, the plumbane adducts NHC·PbCl₂Ph₂ (NHC = Me₂Im^Me (5), iPr₂Im^Me (6), Dipp₂Im (7)) and cAAC^Me·PbCl₂Ph₂ (8)) were isolated in high yields. Reduction of the lead(IV) adducts 5 and 6 with excess KC₈ afforded the diaryl substituted plumbylenes Me₂Im^Me·PbPh₂ (9) and iPr₂Im^Me·PbPh₂ (10), which are stable in the solid state but decompose in solution.

Si(II) Cation-Promoted Formation of an Abnormal NHC-Bound Silylene and a cAAC-Silanyl Radical Ion

The reaction of amidinatosilylene LSi(:)Cl [L = PhC(NtBu)₂] with N-heterocyclic carbene I_Ar [:C{N(Ar)CH}₂, where Ar = 2,6-iPr₂C₆H₃] and NaOTf in tetrahydrofuran (THF) facilely afforded a silicon(II) cation [LSi(:)-_aI_Ar]⁺OTf^- (1⁺OTf^-), where I_Ar isomerizes to abnormal N-heterocyclic carbene _aI_Ar, coordinating to the silicon(II) center. Its Ge homologue, [LGe(:)-_aI_Ar]⁺OTf^- (2⁺OTf^-), was also accessed via the same protocol. For the formation of 1⁺, we propose that an in situ-generated Si(II) cation [LSi(:)]⁺ under the treatment of LSi(:)Cl with NaOTf may isomerize I_Ar in THF. In contrast, the replacement of I_Ar with cyclic alkyl(amino) carbene (cAAC) furnished a cAAC-silanyl radical ion [LSi(H)-cAAC]^•+(LiOTf₂)^- [3^•+(LiOTf₂)^-], which may undergo an abstraction of the H radical from THF. All of the products were characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, electron paramagnetic resonance, and X-ray crystallography, and their bonding scenarios were investigated by density functional theory calculations. These studies provide new perspective on carbene-silicon chemistry.

Phosphine-substituted 1,2,3-triazoles as P,C- and P,N-ligands for photoluminescent coinage metal complexes

A series of homo- and hetero-polynuclear coinage metal complexes based on a phosphine-substituted 1,2,3-triazole system was synthesized.

Dissociative ionisation of adamantane: a combined theoretical and experimental study

Diamond nanoparticles, or nanodiamonds, are intriguing carbon-based materials which, maybe surprisingly, are the most abundant constituent of presolar grains. While the spectroscopic properties of even quite large diamondoids have already been explored, little is known about their unimolecular fragmentation processes. In this paper we characterise the dissociative ionisation of adamantane (C₁₀H₁₆) - the smallest member of the diamondoid family - utilising imaging Photoelectron Photoion Coincidence (iPEPICO) spectroscopy and Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations. We have found adamantane to dissociatively photoionise via several parallel channels of which H, C₃H₇ and C₄H₈ losses are the most important ones. Calculations confirm the existence of a rate-limiting transition state for the multiple C-loss channels, which is located at 10.55 eV with respect to neutral adamantane. In addition, we found dissociation channels leading to small cationic hydrocarbons, which may be relevant in the interstellar medium.

Azaborines: synthesis and use in the generation of stabilized boron-substituted carbocations

A formal N-heterocyclic carbene insertion into the B–H bond of 9-BBN followed by a ring expansion reaction is reported. NHC-9-BBN adducts were reacted in one or two steps to give the corresponding di- or triazaborines. Hydride abstraction of selected species with [Ph₃C]⁺ is facile, giving rise to 6π-aromatic cations with Lewis acidity comparable to Lewis acids commonly employed in frustrated Lewis pairs.

Electronic Structure and Excited-State Dynamics of an Arduengo-Type Carbene and its Imidazolone Oxidation Product

We describe an investigation of the excited-state dynamics of isolated 1,3-di-tert-butyl-imidazoline-2-ylidene (tBu₂ Im, C₁₁ H₂₀ N₂ , m/z=180), an Arduengo-type carbene, by time- and frequency-resolved photoionization using a picosecond laser system. The energies of several singlet and triplet excited states were calculated by time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT). The S₁ state of the carbene deactivates on a 100 ps time scale possibly by intersystem crossing. In the experiments we observed an additional signal at m/z=196, that was assigned to the oxidation product 1,3-di-tert-butyl-imidazolone, tBu₂ ImO. It shows a well-resolved resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionization (REMPI) spectrum with an origin located at 36951 cm^-1 . Several low-lying vibrational bands could be assigned, with a lifetime that depends strongly on the excitation energy. At the origin the lifetime is longer than 3 ns, but drops to 49 ps at higher excess energies. To confirm formation of the imidazolone we also performed experiments on benzimidazolone (BzImO) for comparison. Apart from a redshift for BzImO the spectra of the two compounds are very similar. The TD-DFT values display a very good agreement with the experimental data.

Roaming-Mediated CH2NH Elimination from the Ionization of Aromatic Ethylamines

The ionization of aromatic ethylamines by photons or electrons leads to elimination of CH₂NH fragments, supposedly deriving from the McLafferty rearrangement involving intramolecular γ‐hydrogen transfer. Using tryptamine and phenethylamine as examples, the results reported here suggest that the McLafferty mechanism is inadequate for interpreting the observations of CH₂NH elimination due to much higher calculated appearance energy than experimentally measured values. Furthermore, by considering the roaming‐mediated effect, the calculated appearance energy for the elimination of CH₂NH fragments is reduced and matches well with the experimental results and verifies the existence of roaming‐mediated effect. This effect could potentially be extended to explain the general CH₂NH elimination of aromatic ethylamines. Due to the similar hydrogen transfer to that of the McLafferty mechanism, the roaming‐mediated effect was taken into account to suggest a novel mechanism, termed the “roaming‐modified McLafferty rearrangement”, that explains the observations of CH₂NH elimination in the ionization of aromatic ethylamines. This is a reasonable modification of the McLafferty rearrangement mechanism.

Ring expansion of a ring expanded carbene

Reaction of phenylsilane with the ring expanded carbene 6-Mes results in facile Si–H oxidative addition to the carbenic carbon at room temperature and ring opening on heating.

Adduct Formation, B-H Activation and Ring Expansion at Room Temperature from Reactions of HBcat with NHCs

We report the reactions of catecholborane (HBcat; 1) with unsaturated and saturated NHCs as well as CAAC(Me) . Mono-NHC adducts of the type HBcat⋅NHC (NHC=nPr2 Im, iPr2 Im, iPr2 Im(Me) , and Dipp2 Im) were obtained by stoichiometric reactions of HBcat with the unsaturated NHCs. The reaction of CAAC(Me) with HBcat yielded the B-H activated product CAAC(Me) (H)Bcat via insertion of the carbine-carbon atom into the B-H bond. The saturated NHC Dipp2 SIm reacted in a 2:2 ratio yielding an NHC ring-expanded product at room temperature forming a six-membered -B-C=N-C=C-N- ring via C-N bond cleavage and further migration of the hydrides from two HBcat molecules to the former carbene-carbon atom.

25 years of N-heterocyclic carbenes: activation of both main-group element-element bonds and NHCs themselves

N-Heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) are widely used ligands and reagents in modern inorganic synthesis as well as in homogeneous catalysis and organocatalysis. However, NHCs are not always innocent bystanders. In the last few years, more and more examples were reported of reactions of NHCs with main-group elements which resulted in modification of the NHC. Many of these reactions lead to ring expansion and the formation of six-membered heterocyclic rings involving insertion of the heteroatom into the C-N bond and migration of hydrides, phenyl groups or boron-containing fragments. Furthermore, a few related NHC rearrangements were observed some decades ago. In this Perspective, we summarise the history of NHC ring expansion reactions from the 1960s till the present.

The reductive P–P coupling of primary and secondary phosphines mediated by N-heterocyclic carbenes

P–P bond formation! The reaction of an NHC with primary and secondary phosphines leads to dehydrocoupling of the phosphines with the formation of iPr₂ImH₂ and the corresponding carbene-phosphinidene adducts.
