Abstract
The work in this report describes the syntheses, crystal structures, dc/ac magnetic behaviour, and theoretical calculations (both ab initio CASSCF and DFT) of three defect dicubane/planar butterfly type tetradysprosium(III) compounds of compositions [DyIII4L4(μ3-OH)2(carboxylate)2(dmf)2] (carboxylate = formate (1), acetate (2), propionate (3)), where H2L = 2-(2-hydroxy-3-ethoxybenzylideneamino)phenol. In the butterfly type structures, two DyIII centres (Dyb) occupy the body positions while two other (Dyw) units occupy the wing positions. SHAPE analyses reveal that the coordination geometries of the Dyb and Dyw centres, both octacoordinated, are triangular dodecahedron (TDD) and square antiprism (SAPR), respectively. Variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements give an indication of weak antiferromagnetic interactions and variable-field magnetization measurements reveal strong anisotropy in all the three compounds. The variable-temperature/frequency in-phase/out-of-phase AC susceptibility data reveal that all these three compounds are SMMs with two relaxation channels under zero dc field; slow relaxation (SR) and fast relaxation (FR) processes could be assigned to the SAPR (Dyw) and TDD (Dyb) metal centres, respectively. The simulated Ueff and τ0 values are: 49.0 cm-1 and 1.76 × 10-7 s for 1, 30.3 cm-1 and 1.51 × 10-8 s for 2 and 23.4 cm-1 and 9.64 × 10-7 s for 3. Furthermore, ab initio CASSCF/RASSI-SO/SINGLE_ANISO calculations reveal that the ground state of DyIII centres are axial in nature with a dominating contribution from mJ = |±15/2>. The magnetization relaxation occurs via the first excited KD resulting in the large computed blocking barrier of Dyw (SAPR) centres compared to that of the Dyb (TDD) centres which corroborates the experimental measurements. The exchange parameters obtained from DFT calculations are generally in line with those obtained from the fitting of χMT vs. T in POLY_ANISO calculations. Interesting structural and magneto-structural correlations have been found, which are the major outcomes of this investigation.

Abstract
Three heterometallic hexanuclear 3d-4f complexes bearing the formula [Cu2 (L)2 Ln4 (L)4 (o-van)2 ] [L=2-((E)-((2-hydroxyphenyl)imino]methyl)phenol; o-van=ortho-vanillin] (LnIII =GdIII (1), DyIII (2), and TbIII (3)) have been synthesized and characterized. DC magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal overall antiferromagnetic interactions in 1 and 3, whereas co-existence of ferro- as well as antiferromagnetic interactions were observed in 2. The magnetocaloric effect has been observed for 1 with an entropy change (-ΔSm ) of 22.3 J kg-1 K-1 at 3 K and 7 T. Zero-field single molecule magnet (SMM) behaviour has been observed for 2, where Raman relaxation and quantum tunneling of magnetization (QTM) played a role in magnetization relaxation. The Cu-O-Ln angle well explains the magnetic exchange coupling occurring in the complexes. BS-DFT calculation for the complexes provides an estimate of the exchange interactions between the paramagnetic centres. Ab initio calculations performed for complex 2 established a good correlation to the experimental relaxation dynamics.

Abstract
It is challenging to use achiral ligands to spontaneously construct chiral molecular magnets. In this work, two new Ln4 cluster complexes based on N,N'-(1,3-propanediyl)bis[N-[1,1-bis(hydroxymethyl)-2-hydroxyethyl]amine] (H6L) have been assembled, which are crystallized in a chiral space group due to the asymmetric distribution of acetate (OAc-) groups and hexafluoroacetylacetonate (F6acac-) groups on both sides of the parallelogram-like Ln4 core. Complex 1, [Dy4(H3L)2(OAc)3(F6acac)3]·5MeOH·2H2O, exhibits single-molecule magnet properties at the zero field with the U eff/k value of 48.4 K; notably, besides the Orbach process, the Raman process is also prominent for the magnetic relaxation of 1. Complex 2, [Gd4(H3L)2(OAc)3(F6acac)3]·4MeOH·2.5H2O, displays a large magnetocaloric effect, whose largest -ΔS m value is 21.88 J kg-1 K-1 (when T = 2 K and ΔH = 5 T); it thus can be utilized as a good magnetic refrigeration molecular material.

Abstract
The title metallacrown (MC) complexes LnIII[15-MCFeIIIN(shi)-5](OAc)2CI(C5H5N)6 (Ln1), where OAc- is acetate, shi3- is salicylhydroximate, and Ln = Gd and Dy, were synthesized via a self-assembly reaction in methanol and pyridine. Single crystals were grown using slow evaporation and characterized using X-ray diffraction. Seven-coordinate capped octahedron geometries were observed for the lanthanide ion in both complexes, which is uncommon for trivalent lanthanide species. The 15-MC-5 is a ruffled metallacrown archetype similar to previously reported mixed-valent manganese metallacrowns.

Abstract
For single-molecule toroics (SMTs) based on noncollinear Ising spins, intramolecular magnetic dipole–dipole coupling favours a head-to-tail vortex arrangement of the semi-classical magnetic moments associated with a toroidal ground state. However, to what extent does this effect survive beyond the semi-classical Ising limit? Here, we theoretically investigate the role of dipolar interactions in stabilising ground-state toroidal moments in quantum Heisenberg rings with and without on-site magnetic anisotropy. For the prototypical triangular SMT with strong on-site magnetic anisotropy, we illustrate that, together with noncollinear exchange, intramolecular magnetic dipole–dipole coupling serves to preserve ground-state toroidicity. In addition, we investigate the effect on quantum tunnelling of the toroidal moment in Kramers and non-Kramers systems. In the weak anisotropy limit, we find that, within some critical ion–ion distances, intramolecular magnetic dipole–dipole interactions, diagonalised over the entire Hilbert space of the quantum system, recover ground-state toroidicity in ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic odd-membered rings with up to seven sites, and are further stabilised by Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya coupling.

Abstract
Trinuclear lanthanoid clusters have been synthesised and investigated as toroidal spin systems. A pyridyl functionalised β-diketonate, 1,3-bis(pyridin-2-yl)propane-1,3-dione (o-dppdH) has been used to synthesise a family of clusters of the form [Dy3(OH)2(o-dppd)3Cl2(H2O)4]Cl2·7H2O (1), [Tb3(o-dppd)3(μ3-OH)2(CH3CH2OH)3Cl3][Tb3(o-dppd)3(μ3-OH)2(H2O)(CH3CH2OH)2Cl3]Cl2·H2O (2), [Ho3(OH)2(o-dppd)3Cl(H2O)5]Cl3·3H2O (3) and [Er3(OH)2(o-dppd)3Cl2(H2O)3(CH3OH)]Cl2·3H2O·CH3OH (4). Despite the previous occurrence of this structural motif in the literature, these systems have not been widely investigated in terms of torodic behaviour. Magnetic studies were used to further characterise the complexes. DC susceptibility studies support weak antiferromagnetic exchange in the complexes. Slow magnetic relaxation behaviour is observed in the dynamic AC magnetic studies for complex 1. Theoretical studies predict that complex 1 and 3 have a non-magnetic ground state based on a toroidal arrangement of spins. Changes to the coordination environment in 2 do not support a toroic spin state. The prolate nature of the ErIII centres in complex 4 and large transverse anisotropy do not support the toroidal arrangement of lanthanoid spins in the complex.

Abstract
The paper presents a computational study of the magnetocaloric properties of the V12 polyoxovanadate molecular magnet. The description is restricted to low-temperature range (below approximately 100 K), where the magnetic properties of the system in question can be sufficiently modelled by considering a tetramer that consists of four vanadium ions with spins S=1/2. The discussion is focused on the magnetocaloric effect in the cryogenic range. The exact and numerical diagonalization of the corresponding Hamiltonian is used in order to construct the thermodynamic description within a version of the canonical ensemble. The thermodynamic quantities of interest, such as magnetic entropy, specific heat, entropy change under isothermal magnetization/demagnetization, temperature change under adiabatic magnetization/demagnetization, refrigerant capacity, and magnetic Grüneisen ratio, are calculated and discussed extensively. The importance of two quantum level crossings for the described properties is emphasized. The significant ranges of direct and inverse magnetocaloric effect are predicted. In particular, the maximized inverse magnetocaloric response is found for cryogenic temperatures.

Abstract
Isolation and structural characterization of novel organoantimony(V)-based oxo clusters are reported. (RSb)4(OH)4(t-BuPO3)6 and (RSb)2(O)(t-BuPO3H)6 independently in the presence of pyridine under solvothermal conditions afford the hexanuclear organoantimonate clusters [(RSb)6(μ3-O)2(μ2-O)6(t-BuPO3)4], where R = p-i-PrC6H4 (1), p-ClC6H4 (2). Further, reaction of organostibonate phosphonate with Ti(OiPr)4 in the presence of pyridine under solvothermal conditions afforded the mixed-metal titanium stibonate hexanuclear clusters [(RSb)2Ti4(μ3-O)2(μ2-O)2(t-BuPO3)4(μ-OCH3)4(OCH3)4], where R = p-i-PrC6H4 (3), p-ClC6H4 (4). Band gap measurements were performed on 1-4. They reveal a remarkable reduction in the band gap on moving from the heavier main-group-based oxo cages (1 and 2) to the titanium-incorporated oxo cages (3 and 4).

Abstract
The structural, magnetic and theoretical aspects are described for three triangular lanthanide complexes, [Tb(OH)(teaH2)3(paa)3]Cl2 (1), [Dy(OH)(teaH2)3(paa)3]Cl2 (2) and [Ho(OH)(teaH2)3(paa)3]Cl2 (3), and a hexanuclear wheel of formula [Dy(pdeaH)6(NO3)6] (4) [teaH3 = triethanolamine, paaH = N-(2-pyridyl)-acetoacetamide and pdeaH3 = 3-[bis(2-hydroxyethyl)amino]propan-1-ol]. Each complex displays single molecule toroidal behaviour as rationalised using high-level ab initio calculations. Complexes 2 and 3 are the first examples of mixed moment single molecule toroidal complexes featuring non-Kramers ions.

Abstract
Multinuclear hetero-tri-spin complexes based on a methyl-pyrazole nitronyl nitroxide radical, namely, [Ln2Cu3(hfac)12(4-NIT-MePyz)4] (Ln = Gd(1), Tb(2), Dy(3); hfac = hexafluoroacetylacetone; 4-NIT-MePyz = 2-{4-(1-methyl)-pyrazolyl}-4,4,5,5-tetramethylimidazoline-1-oxyl-3-oxide) have been successfully obtained through a one-pot reaction of the radical ligand (4-NIT-MePyz) with Cu(hfac)2 and Ln(hfac)3. These 2p-3d-4f complexes exhibit five-nuclear structures with the sequence [Cu-Rad-Ln-Rad-Cu-Rad-Ln-Rad-Cu], in which each 4-NIT-MePyz radical acting as a bidentate bridging ligand is coordinated to one Ln(hfac)3 unit through one oxygen atom of the NO groups and to one Cu(hfac)2 unit with one nitrogen atom from the pyrazole ring. For complex 1, based on the spin Hamiltonian calculations and MAGPACK program, it is concluded that there exist ferromagnetic couplings between GdIII and NIT radicals, as well as between CuII and free radicals with J1 = 6.8(1) and J3 = 1.3(2) cm-1, respectively, and antiferromagnetic interactions between radical and radical with J2 = -2.8(5) cm-1. Complex 2 shows frequency-dependent out-of-phase signals under a zero or 2000 Oe dc field indicating single-molecule magnetic behavior.

Abstract
The combination of LnIII ions (GdIII, TbIII or DyIII) and a pyrazole nitronyl nitroxide radical results in three isomorphous complexes, namely, [Ln(hfac)3(NIT-Pyz)]2 (Ln = Gd(1), Tb(2), Dy(3); hfac = hexafluoroacetylacetone; NIT-Pyz = 2-{3-pyrazolyl}-4,4,5,5-tetramethylimidazoline-1-oxyl-3-oxide). Single crystal X-ray diffraction studies revealed that all of them are composed of two crystallographically independent mononuclear systems, in which the central LnIII ions are coordinated by three hfac and one bidentate chelating NIT-Pyz radical. The central LnIII ions are all in square antiprism geometry (D4d) polyhedron configurations. Based on the spin Hamiltonian calculations, there exist antiferromagnetic couplings in the GdIII-NIT radical system in complex 1. Complexes 2 and 3 show frequency-dependent out-of-phase signals in a zero field indicating single-molecule magnetic behavior. Moreover, Tb's complex (2) shows a single thermal relaxation process with an energy barrier of 26 K. For Dy's complex (3), the Orbach and Raman processes both contribute to the magnetic relaxation behaviors.

Heterometallic Heptanuclear [Cu 5Ln 2] (Ln = Tb, Dy, and Ho) Single-Molecule Magnets Organized in One-Dimensional Coordination Polymeric Network. Inorg Chem 2017; 56:14612-14623. Abstract
The reaction of a multisite coordination ligand, LH3, with Cu(II) salts and Ln(NO3)3·nH2O in a 1:2:1 stoichiometric ratio in the presence of triethylamine was found to afford a series of one-dimensional heterometallic [{Cu5Ln2(L)2(μ3-OH)4(ClO4)(NO3)3(OH2)5}(ClO4)2(H2O)x]∞ [Ln = Tb(1), Dy(2) and Ho(3), x = 4.25, 5.5, and 5 for 1-3, respectively] coordination polymers. Complexes 1-3 have been characterized by single crystal X-ray crystallography. The detailed study of the magnetic properties has also been performed and compared with the parent [Cu5Ln2] molecular analogues. The ac susceptibility measurements for complexes 1-3 confirm their SMM behavior with the following characteristics: Δeff/kB = 23.4 K, τ0 = 1.1 × 10-6 s and Δeff/kB = 27.9 K, τ0 = 6.6 × 10-7 s under 0 and 1200 Oe dc fields, respectively for 1; Δeff/kB = 8.3 K, τ0 = 3.1 × 10-6 s for 2 under 0 dc field. For 3, the fast QTM below 4 K prevents the estimation of the SMM energy barrier. Remarkably, the magnetic and SMM properties of the previously reported molecular [Cu5Ln2] analogues are preserved after their assembly in these coordination networks.

Ferrotoroidic ground state in a heterometallic {Cr IIIDy III6} complex displaying slow magnetic relaxation. Nat Commun 2017; 8:1023. Abstract
Toroidal quantum states are most promising for building quantum computing and information storage devices, as they are insensitive to homogeneous magnetic fields, but interact with charge and spin currents, allowing this moment to be manipulated purely by electrical means. Coupling molecular toroids into larger toroidal moments via ferrotoroidic interactions can be pivotal not only to enhance ground state toroidicity, but also to develop materials displaying ferrotoroidic ordered phases, which sustain linear magneto-electric coupling and multiferroic behavior. However, engineering ferrotoroidic coupling is known to be a challenging task. Here we have isolated a {CrIIIDyIII6} complex that exhibits the much sought-after ferrotoroidic ground state with an enhanced toroidal moment, solely arising from intramolecular dipolar interactions. Moreover, a theoretical analysis of the observed sub-Kelvin zero-field hysteretic spin dynamics of {CrIIIDyIII6} reveals the pivotal role played by ferrotoroidic states in slowing down the magnetic relaxation, in spite of large calculated single-ion quantum tunneling rates.

Abstract
We report the synthesis, structural characterisation, magnetic properties and provide an ab initio analysis of the magnetic behaviour of two new heterometallic octanuclear coordination complexes containing CoIII and DyIII ions. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies revealed molecular formulae of [CoIII4 DyIII4 (μ-OH)4 (μ3 -OMe)4 {O2 CC(CH3 )3 }4 (tea)4 (H2 O)4 ]⋅4 H2 O (1) and [CoIII4 DyIII4 (μ-F)4 (μ3 -OH)4 (o-tol)8 (mdea)4 ]⋅ 3 H2 O⋅EtOH⋅MeOH (2; tea3- =triply deprotonated triethanolamine; mdea2- =doubly deprotonated N-methyldiethanolamine; o-tol=o-toluate), and both complexes display an identical metallic core topology. Furthermore, the theoretical, magnetic and SMM properties of the isostructural complex, [CrIII4 DyIII4 (μ-F4 )(μ3 -OMe)1.25 (μ3 -OH)2.75 (O2 CPh)8 (mdea)4 ] (3), are discussed and compared with a structurally similar complex, [CrIII4 DyIII4 (μ3 -OH)4 (μ-N3 )4 (mdea)4 (O2 CC(CH3 )3 )4 ] (4). DC and AC magnetic susceptibility data revealed single-molecule magnet (SMM) behaviour for 1-4. Each complex displays dynamic behaviour, highlighting the effect of ligand and transition metal ion replacement on SMM properties. Complexes 2, 3 and 4 exhibited slow magnetic relaxation with barrier heights (Ueff ) of 39.0, 55.0 and 10.4 cm-1 respectively. Complex 1, conversely, did not exhibit slow relaxation of magnetisation above 2 K. To probe the variance in the observed Ueff values, calculations by using CASSCF, RASSI-SO and POLY_ANISO routine were performed on these complexes to estimate the nature of the magnetic coupling and elucidate the mechanism of magnetic relaxation. Calculations gave values of JDy-Dy as -1.6, 1.6 and 2.8 cm-1 for complexes 1, 2 and 3, respectively, whereas the JDy-Cr interaction was estimated to be -1.8 cm-1 for complex 3. The developed mechanism for magnetic relaxation revealed that replacement of the hydroxide ion by fluoride quenched the quantum tunnelling of magnetisation (QTM) significantly, and led to improved SMM properties for complex 2 compared with 1. However, the tunnelling of magnetisation at low-lying excited states was still operational for 2, which led to low-temperature QTM relaxation. Replacement of the diamagnetic CoIII ions with paramagnetic CrIII led to CrIII ⋅⋅⋅DyIII coupling, which resulted in quenching of QTM at low temperatures for complexes 3 and 4. The best example was found if both CrIII and fluoride were present, as seen for complex 3, for which both factors additively quenched QTM and led to the observation of highly coercive magnetic hysteresis loops above 2 K. Herein, we propose a synthetic strategy to quench the QTM effects in lanthanide-based SMMs. Our strategy differs from existing methods, in which parameters such as magnetic coupling are difficult to control, and it is likely to have implications beyond the DyIII SMMs studied herein.
