Fused π-Extended Truxenes via a Threefold Borylation as the Key Step

Novel truxene-based dipyrromethanes (DPMs): synthesis, spectroscopic characterization and photophysical properties

For the first time, herein, we report the synthetic part of the truxene-centred mono-, di- and tri-substituted dipyromethanes (DPMs) in good yields (60-80%) along with their preliminary photophysical (absorption, emission and time resolved fluorescence lifetime) properties. The condensation reaction for assembling the required DPMs were catalyzed with trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) at 0 °C to room temperature (rt), and the stable dipyrromethanes were purified through silica-gel column chromatography. After successfully synthesizing these easy-to-make yet interesting molecules, they were fully characterized by means of the standard spectroscopic techniques (1H NMR, 13C NMR and HRMS). We are of the opinion that these truxene-based systems will be useful for diverse applications in future studies.

Transition-Metal-Catalyzed Silylation and Borylation of C-H Bonds for the Synthesis and Functionalization of Complex Molecules

The functionalization of C-H bonds in organic molecules containing functional groups has been one of the holy grails of catalysis. One synthetically important approach to the diverse functionalization of C-H bonds is the catalytic silylation or borylation of C-H bonds, which enables a broad array of downstream transformations to afford diverse structures. Advances in both undirected and directed methods for the transition-metal-catalyzed silylation and borylation of C-H bonds have led to their rapid adoption in early-, mid-, and late-stage of the synthesis of complex molecules. In this Review, we review the application of the transition-metal-catalyzed silylation and borylation of C-H bonds to the synthesis of bioactive molecules, organic materials, and ligands. Overall, we aim to provide a picture of the state of art of the silylation and borylation of C-H bonds as applied to the synthesis and modification of diverse architectures that will spur further application and development of these reactions.

Visible-Light Photocatalyzed peri-(3 + 2) Cycloadditions of Quinolines

Cycloaddition reactions─epitomized by the Diels-Alder reaction─offer an arguably unmatched springboard for achieving chemical complexity, often with excellent selectivity, in a modular single step. We report the synthesis of aza-acenaphthenes in a single step by an unprecedented formal peri-(3 + 2) cycloaddition of simple quinolines with alkynes. A commercially available iridium complex exerts a dual role of photosensitizer and photoredox catalyst, fostering a cyclization/rearomatization cascade. The initial energy-transfer phase leads to the acenaphthene skeleton, while the ensuing redox shuttling step leads to aromatization. We applied this technology to 8-substituted quinolines and phenanthrolines, which smoothly reacted with both terminal and internal alkynes with excellent levels of regio- and diastereoselectivity. Density functional theory calculations revealed the intertwined EnT/SET nature of the process and offered guiding design principles for the synthesis of new aza-acenaphthenes.

Steric Shielding Effects Induced by Intramolecular C-H⋯O Hydrogen Bonding: Remote Borylation Directed by Bpin Groups

Regioselectivities in catalytic C-H borylations (CHBs) have been rationalized using simplistic steric models and correlations with nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) chemical shifts. However, regioselectivity can be significant for important substrate classes where none would be expected from these arguments. In this study, intramolecular hydrogen bonding (IMHB) can lead to steric shielding effects that can direct Ir-catalyzed CHB regiochemistry. Bpin (Bpin = pinacol boronic ester)/arene IMHB can promote remote borylations of N-borylated anilines, 2-amino-N-alkylpyridine, tetrahydroquinolines, indoles, and 1-borylated naphthalenes. Experimental and computational studies support molecular geometries with the Bpin orientation controlled by a C-H⋯O IMHB. IMHB-directed remote CHB appeared operative in the C6 borylation of 3-aminoindazole (seven-membered IMHB) and C6 borylation of an osimertinib analogue where a pyrimidine IMHB creates the steric shield. This study informs researchers to evaluate not only inter- but also intramolecular noncovalent interactions as potential drivers of remote CHB regioselectivity.

Recent Advances in Heterocyclic Nanographenes and Other Polycyclic Heteroaromatic Compounds

This review surveys recent progress in the chemistry of polycyclic heteroaromatic molecules with a focus on structural diversity and synthetic methodology. The article covers literature published during the period of 2016-2020, providing an update to our first review of this topic (Chem. Rev. 2017, 117 (4), 3479-3716).

From truxenes to heterotruxenes: playing with heteroatoms and the symmetry of molecules

As a result of the modification of truxene, we can change the electronic structure or create multidimensional materials. Thus, the use of truxenes is very wide.

Late-Stage Functionalization of the Periphery of Oligophenylene Dendrimers with Various Arene Units via Fourfold C-H Borylation

Late-stage functionalization of the periphery of oligophenylene dendrimers was efficiently achieved via site-selective C-H activation of a preconstructed, readily accessible dendron. By fourfold iridium-catalyzed C-H borylation followed by Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling, various arene units were introduced into the end points of the 1,3,5-phenylene-based hydrocarbon dendron. Coupling of the modified dendrons with a core unit, such as 2,6-dibromobenzoic acid derivatives, afforded the periphery-functionalized dendrimers that also have an endohedral functionality at the core position.

Contorted Heteroannulated Tetraareno[a,d,j,m]coronenes

Fused polycyclic aromatic compounds are interesting materials for organic electronics applications. To fine-tune photophysical or electrochemical properties, either various substituents can be attached or heteroatoms (such as N or S) can be incorporated into the fused aromatic backbone. Coronenes and heterocoronenes are promising compounds in this respect. Up until now, the possibilities for varying the attached fused heteroaromatics at the coronene core were quite limited, and realizing both electron-withdrawing and -donating rings at the same time was very difficult. Here, a series of pyridine, anisole and thiophene annulated tetraareno[a,d,j,m]coronenes has been synthesized by a facile two-step route that is a combination of Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling and a following cyclization step, starting from three different diarenoperylene dibromides. The contorted molecular π-planes of the obtained cata-condensed tetraarenocoronenes were analyzed by single-crystal X-ray crystallography, and the photophysical and electrochemical properties were systematically investigated by UV/Vis spectroscopy and cyclovoltammetry.

A Chiral Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon Monkey Saddle

A contorted polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) in the shape of a monkey saddle has been synthesized in three steps from a readily available truxene precursor. The monkey saddle PAH is consisting of three five-, seven six-, and three eight-membered rings and has been unambiguously characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Owing to the three biaryl axes the monkey saddle PAH is inherently chiral. The inversion of the two enantiomeric structures into each other preferably occurs through a twisting of peripheral rings rather than by a fully planar intermediate, as has been calculated by DFT methods. Enantiomers were separated by chiral HPLC and inversion barriers determined by variable temperature circular dichroism spectroscopy, supporting the twisting mechanism.

From Palladium to Gold Catalysis for the Synthesis of Crushed Fullerenes and Acenes

The quest for organic materials with improved optoelectronic properties has stimulated the development of new strategies for the preparation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Within this context, transition metal catalysis offers unparalleled opportunities for the assembly of complex molecular architectures. The palladium-catalyzed direct C-H arylation provides straight access to biaryls without the need of prefunctionalization at the nucleophilic site, which is attractive from the perspective of the synthesis of polyarenes. Mechanistically, this reaction was found to be different from an electrophilic aromatic substitution, involving the abstraction of a proton by an external base in the key metalation step. Using readily available C27 truxene as the starting material, a concise synthetic route consisting of a threefold benzylation and subsequent palladium-catalyzed arylation led to C60 polyarenes, also referred to as "crushed fullerenes", which could be converted into C₆₀ fullerene by laser-induced cyclodehydrogenation in the gas phase or by thermal cyclodehydrogenation on a platinum surface. A conceptually related strategy based on the use of a highly electrophilic gold(I) complex as the catalyst for the threefold intramolecular hydroarylation of truxene derivatives was applied for the synthesis of decacyclenes. Using gold(I) catalysis, we have also developed a variety of synthetically useful protocols for the cycloisomerization of readily available 1,n-enynes as well as for the addition for nucleophiles to these unsaturated substrates. In one of these transformations, 1,7-enynes bearing aryl-substituted alkynes undergo formal [4 + 2] cycloaddition reactions via gold(I)-catalyzed 6-exo-dig cyclization and intramolecular Friedel-Crafts-type reaction to form tricyclic compounds bearing a dihydronaphthalene core. A related transformation led to a general synthesis of hydroacenes, which are known to be stabilized precursors of the corresponding conjugated acenes with enhanced solubility. A wide variety of dihydrotetracenes featuring electron-donating and electron-withdrawing groups, as well as dihydropentacene and dihydrohexacene could be easily obtained. A simple variation of our synthetic route led to tetrahydro-derivatives of higher acenes with up to 11 linearly fused six-membered rings. The dehydrogenation of tetrahydroacenes on a metallic substrate using the tip of a scanning tunneling microscopy instrument or by thermal annealing enabled the preparation of the whole series of higher acenes from heptacene up to previously unknown undecacene, whose structure was confirmed by noncontact atomic force microscopy. This work provided a unique opportunity for the analysis of the evolution of the transport gap in the acene series on Au(111). Furthermore, heptacene was also generated by on-surface dehydrogenation on Ag(001) from tetrahydroheptacene and a dibrominated derivative.

Switching the Statistical C3 /C1 Ratio in the Threefold Aromatic Substitution of Tribenzotriquinacenes towards the C3 Isomer

Tribenzotriquinacene (TBTQ) is a bowl-shaped molecule that has been widely used as a molecular building block in supramolecular and materials chemistry. Especially C₃ -symmetric threefold-substituted TBTQs are interesting for these purposes. Until now a general and selective synthetic approach to those C₃ -symmetric products was lacking, mainly because the typically used electrophilic aromatic substitution reactions of the parent TBTQ hydrocarbons produce predominantly the C₁ isomer over the C₃ isomer (3:1 statistical ratio). Herein we introduce a threefold borylation of TBTQ with the C₃ isomer as the main product (2.6:1 C₃ /C₁ ratio). The borylated TBTQ can be converted in good yields into other C₃ -symmetric TBTQs, thus allowing straightforward synthetic access to new building blocks for supramolecular and materials chemistry.

Facile Synthetic Approach to a Large Variety of Soluble Diarenoperylenes

Fused, extended π-systems such as larger acenes and heteroacenes are interesting compounds for organic thin-film transistors (TFTs). The larger the number of linearly cata-fused rings, the lower the stability of the acenes. By peri-fusion of additional rings, the stabilities can significantly be increased. Here we present a facile approach to use a diborylated dihydroanthracene as precursor to get diareno-fused perylenes in just two steps in high yields. The compounds show pronounced packing in the crystalline states by π-stacking. Promising candidates have been used to fabricate p-channel TFTs by vacuum sublimation showing field-effect mobilities up to 0.12 cm²  V^-1  s^-1 .

Synthesis of a Crushed Fullerene C60H24 through Sixfold Palladium-Catalyzed Arylation

The synthesis of a new C3v -symmetric crushed fullerene C60H24 (5) has been accomplished in three steps from truxene through sixfold palladium-catalyzed intramolecular arylation of a syn-trialkylated truxene precursor. Laser irradiation of 5 induces cyclodehydrogenation processes that result in the formation of C60, as detected by LDI-MS.
