Abstract
Many heterocyclic compounds can be synthetized using diaza-1,3-butadienes (DADs) as key structural precursors. Isolated and in situ diaza-1,3-butadienes, produced from their respective precursors (typically imines and hydrazones) under a variety of conditions, can both react with a wide range of substrates in many kinds of reactions. Most of these reactions discussed here include nucleophilic additions, Michael-type reactions, cycloadditions, Diels–Alder, inverse electron demand Diels–Alder, and aza-Diels–Alder reactions. This review focuses on the reports during the last 10 years employing 1,2-diaza-, 1,3-diaza-, 2,3-diaza-, and 1,4-diaza-1,3-butadienes as intermediates to synthesize heterocycles such as indole, pyrazole, 1,2,3-triazole, imidazoline, pyrimidinone, pyrazoline, -lactam, and imidazolidine, among others. Fused heterocycles, such as quinazoline, isoquinoline, and dihydroquinoxaline derivatives, are also included in the review.

Abstract
The reactivity of three 1,2-dialkynyl-1,2-diaminodiborane(4) derivatives, B2(NMe2)2(CCR)2 (R = H, Me, SiMe3), towards small molecules known to react with both B-B and CC bonds was studied. With arylazides nitrene insertion into the B-B bond with concomitant loss of N2 was kinetically favoured in all cases. While reactions with sterically unhindered hydroboranes proceeded unselectively, sterically encumbered dimesitylborane cleanly added to both alkynyl moieties, resulting in the first examples of 1,2-divinyldiboranes(4). In the presence of catalytic amounts of Pd/C room-temperature hydrogenation at 1 bar led to oxidative B-B bond cleavage and yielded the fully hydrogenated alkyl(amino)hydroborane products. These could be prevented from dimerising and isolated by complexation with an NHC ligand. Finally, stepwise halogenation of the B-B bond and the alkynyl groups afforded first the corresponding alkynyl(amino)haloboranes and then the amino(halo)(1,2-dihalovinyl)boranes.

Abstract
A number of novel alkynyl-functionalized diarylbis(dimethylamino)diboranes(4) are prepared by salt metathesis, and the appended alkynyl groups are subjected to hydroboration. Their reactions with monohydroboranes lead to discrete boryl-appended diborane(4) species, while dihydroboranes induce their catenation to oligomeric species, the first known examples of well-characterized macromolecular species with B-B bonds. The oligomeric species were found to comprise up to ten repeat units and are soluble in common organic solvents. Some of the oligomeric species have good air stability and all were characterized by NMR and vibrational spectroscopy and size-exclusion chromatography techniques.

Abstract
Herein we describe the first examples of isolable electron-precise diboranes(4) that bear azide moieties: the acyclic 1,2-diazido-1,2-bis(dimethylamino)diborane(4) and the cyclic 1,4-diaryl-2,3-diazido-1,4-diaza-2,3-diborinines (aryl=mesityl, 2,6-xylyl, 4-tolyl). The reported examples are not only stable enough to be observed and isolated (putative transient diborane(4) azides previously reported by our group spontaneously decompose even below room temperature), but some of them are even robust enough to undergo controlled pyrolysis without explosive decomposition at temperatures well above 100 °C. In two cases, the controlled pyrolysis allows the isolation of complex diazaboretidines, which are the apparent dimerization products of endocyclic boryl-iminoboranes.

Abstract
Several bis(dimethylamino)-substituted 1,4-diaza-2,3-diborinines (DADBs) were synthesized with variable substituents at the backbone nitrogen atoms. By reaction with HCl or BX3 (X=Br, I), these species were successfully converted into their synthetically more useful halide congeners. The high versatility of the generated B-X bonds in further functionalization reactions at the boron centers was demonstrated by means of salt elimination (MeLi) and commutation (NMe2 DADBs) reactions, thus making the DADB system a general structural motif in diborane(4) chemistry. A total of 18 DADB derivatives were characterized in the solid state by X-ray diffraction, revealing a strong dependence of the heterocyclic bonding parameters from the exocyclic substitution pattern at boron. According to our experiments towards the realization of a Dipp-substituted, sterically encumbered DADB, the mechanism of DADB formation proceeds via a transient four-membered azadiboretidine intermediate that subsequently undergoes ring expansion to afford the six-membered DADB heterocycle.

Abstract
The reaction of aryl- and amino(dihydro)boranes with dibora[2]ferrocenophane 1 leads to the formation 1,3-trans-dihydrotriboranes by formal hydrogenation and insertion of a borylene unit into the B=B bond. The aryltriborane derivatives undergo reversible photoisomerization to the cis-1,2-μ-H-3-hydrotriboranes, while hydride abstraction affords cationic triboranes, which represent the first doubly base-stabilized B3 H4 + analogues.

Abstract
A 1,4,2,3-diazadiborinine derivative was found to form Lewis adducts with strong two-electron donors such as N-heterocyclic and cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbenes. Depending on the donor, some of these Lewis pairs are thermally unstable, converting to sole B,N-embedded products upon gentle heating. The products of these reactions, which have been fully characterized by NMR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction, were identified as B,N-heterocycles with fused 1,5,2,4-diazadiborepine and 1,4,2-diazaborinine rings. Computational modelling of the reaction mechanism provides insight into the formation of these unique structures, suggesting that a series of B-H, C-N, and B-B bond activation steps are responsible for these "intercalation" reactions between the 1,4,2,3-diazadiborinine and NHCs.

Abstract
The desymmetrization of the cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbene-supported diboracumulene B2(cAACMe)2 (cAACMe = 1-(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-3,3,5,5-tetramethylpyrrolidin-2-ylidene) by monoadduct formation with IMeMe (1,3-dimethylimidazol-2-ylidene) yields the zerovalent sp-sp2 diboron compound B2(cAACMe)2(IMeMe), which provides a versatile platform for the synthesis of novel symmetrical and unsymmetrical zerovalent sp2-sp2 diboron compounds by adduct formation with IMeMe and CO, respectively. Furthermore, B2(cAACMe)2(IMeMe) displays enhanced reactivity compared to its symmetrical precursor, undergoing spontaneous intramolecular C-H activation and facile twofold hydrogenation, the latter resulting in B-B bond cleavage and the formation of the mixed-base parent borylene (cAACMe)(IMeMe)BH.

Abstract
The introduction of main group elements into conjugated scaffolds is emerging as a key route to novel optoelectronic materials. Herein, an efficient and versatile way to synthesize polymerizable 9,10-azaboraphenanthrene (BNP)-containing monomers by aromaticity-driven ring expansion reactions between highly antiaromatic borafluorene and azides is reported, and the corresponding conjugated small molecules and polymers are developed as well. The BNP-containing small molecules and conjugated polymers showed good air/moisture stability and notable fluorescence properties. Addition of fluoride ions to the BNP-based small molecules and polymers induced a rapid change in the emission color from blue to green/yellow, respectively, accompanied by strong intensity changes. The conjugated polymers showed better ratiometric sensing performance than small molecules due to the exciton migration along the conjugated chains. Further experiments showed that the sensing process is fully reversible. The films prepared by solution-deposition of BNP-based compounds in the presence of polycaprolactone also showed good ratiometric sensing for fluoride ions.
