Abstract
Two bidentate ligands (L1 = 1-pentyl-2-(pyridin-2-yl)-1H-benzimidazole and L2 = 1-heptyl-2-(pyridin-2-yl)-1H-benzimidazole) were employed for the synthesis of five mononuclear Fe(II) coordination compounds 1-5 containing perchlorate, tetrafluoroborate and triflate counterions. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed the expected molecular structures of all the reported compounds, revealing a moderately distorted octahedral geometry of {FeN6} coordination chromophores. All five compounds exhibit thermal spin crossover with T1/2 temperatures allocated above 400 K. The theoretical calculations supported the experimental magnetic investigation and helped to explain the electronic structures of the reported complexes with respect to the occurrence of thermal spin state switching. In addition, compound 4 was employed for the preparation of Langmuir-Blodgett films and fabrication of molecular films using the method of spontaneous evaporation of the subphase. While the formation of Langmuir-Blodgett films was unsuccessful due to the instability of the compound at the water/air interface, the latter technique allowed the formation of molecular films of 4 with well-defined thickness and homogeneity.

Abstract
Spin-state switching in iron(II) complexes composed of ligands featuring moderate ligand-field strength-for example, 2,6-bi(1H-pyrazol-1-yl)pyridine (BPP)-is dependent on many factors. Herein, we show that spin-state switching in isomeric iron(II) complexes composed of BPP-based ligands-ethyl 2,6-bis(1H-pyrazol-1-yl)isonicotinate (BPP-COOEt, L1) and (2,6-di(1H-pyrazol-1-yl)pyridin-4-yl)methylacetate (BPP-CH2OCOMe, L2)-is dependent on the nature of the substituent at the BPP skeleton. Bi-stable spin-state switching-with a thermal hysteresis width (ΔT1/2) of 44 K and switching temperature (T1/2) = 298 K in the first cycle-is observed for complex 1·CH3CN composed of L1 and BF4- counter anions. Conversely, the solvent-free isomeric counterpart of 1·CH3CN-complex 2a, composed of L2 and BF4- counter anions-was trapped in the high-spin (HS) state. For one of the polymorphs of complex 2b·CH3CN-2b·CH3CN-Y, Y denotes yellow colour of the crystals-composed of L2 and ClO4- counter anions, a gradual and non-hysteretic SCO is observed with T1/2 = 234 K. Complexes 1·CH3CN and 2b·CH3CN-Y also underwent light-induced spin-state switching at 5 K due to the light-induced excited spin-state trapping (LIESST) effect. Structures of the low-spin (LS) and HS forms of complex 1·CH3CN revealed that spin-state switching goes hand-in-hand with pronounced distortion of the trans-N{pyridyl}-Fe-N{pyridyl} angle (ϕ), whereas such distortion is not observed for 2b·CH3CN-Y. This observation points that distortion is one of the factors making the spin-state switching of 1·CH3CN hysteretic in the solid state. The observation of bi-stable spin-state switching with T1/2 centred at room temperature for 1·CH3CN indicates that technologically relevant spin-state switching profiles based on mononuclear iron(II) complexes can be obtained.

Abstract
A dinuclear Fe(II) spin crossover (SCO) complex with the formula [Fe2L5(NCS)4]·2DMF·2H2O (1) was synthesised from 1-naphthylimino-1,2,4-triazole (L). Complex 1 exhibits an incomplete thermally induced spin transition with a transition temperature T1/2 of 95 K and a thermally trapped metastable high-spin state at low temperatures. Furthermore, it undergoes a reversible light-induced spin crossover by alternate irradiation with 532 and 808 nm lasers.

Abstract
A brand-new application of thorium-bearing clusters in the field of ionizing radiation detection is exemplified by two novel hexanuclear thorium clusters, Th-bppCOO-1 and Th-bppCOO-2, which incorporate carboxylate-functionalized 2,6-di(pyrazol-1-yl)pyridine ligands. Notably, Th-bppCOO-1 is composed of an unprecedented [Th6(OH)4O4(H2O)5]12+ secondary building unit, the Th6 core of which is decorated by five H2O molecules. Furthermore, selective photoluminescence quenching responses of Th-bppCOO-1 and Th-bppCOO-2 toward X-ray over UV radiation have been demonstrated for the first time.

Abstract
Thanks to the impressive control that microenvironments within enzymes can have over substrates, many biological reactions occur with high regio- and stereoselectivity. However, comparable regio- and stereoselectivity is extremely difficult to achieve for many types of reactions, particularly photochemical cycloaddition reactions in homogeneous solutions. Here, we describe a supramolecular templating strategy that enables photochemical [4 + 4] cycloaddition of 2,6-difunctionalized anthracenes with unique regio- and stereoselectivity and reactivity using a concept known as the supramolecular approach. The reaction of 2,6-azolium substituted anthracenes H4-L(PF6)2 (L = 1a–1c) with Ag2O yielded complexes anti-[Ag2L2](PF6)4 featuring an antiparallel orientation of the anthracene groups. Irradiation of complexes anti-[Ag2L2](PF6)4 proceeded under [4 + 4] cycloaddition linking the two anthracene moieties to give cyclodimers anti-[Ag2(2)](PF6)2. Reaction of 2,6-azole substituted anthracenes with a dinuclear complex [Cl-Au-NHC–NHC-Au-Cl] yields tetranuclear assemblies with the anthracene moieties oriented in syn-fashion. Irradiation and demetallation gives a [4 + 4] syn-photodimer of two anthracenes. The stereoselectivity of the [4 + 4] cycloaddition between two anthracene moieties is determined by their orientation in the metallosupramolecular assemblies. A supramolecular templating strategy that enables the photochemical [4 + 4] cycloaddition of 2,6-difunctionalized anthracene derivatives with unique stereoselectivity has been developed based on metal-NHC units.![]()

Abstract
Here, we show that charge-transfer interactions determine whether donor and acceptor ditopic ligands will associate in a complementary or self-complementary fashion upon metal-ion clipping. Anthracene-based (9,10LD and 1,5LD) and anthraquinone-based (1,5LA) ditopic ligands containing two imidazole side arms as zinc coordination sites were designed. The 9,10LD and 1,5LA systems associated in a complementary fashion (LA/LD/LA) upon clipping by two zinc ions (Zn2+) to form an alternating donor-acceptor assembly [(9,10LD)(1,5LA)2-(Zn2+)2]. However, once the charge-transfer interactions were perturbed by subtle modifications of the imidazole side arms (9,10LD'(S) and 1,5LA'(S)), self-complementary association (LD'/LD'/LD'/LD' and LA'/LA'/LA'/LA') between the donor (9,10LD'(S)) and acceptor (1,5LA'(S)) ligands predominantly occurred to form homoassemblies [(9,10LD'(S))4-(Zn2+)2 and (1,5LA'(S))4-(Zn2+)2]. As in the case of a homochiral pair (9,10LD'(S) and 1,5LA'(S)), self-complementary association (narcissistic self-sorting) occurred in the Zn2+ assembly with heterochiral combinations of the donor and acceptor ligands (9,10LD'(S)/1,5LA'(R) and 9,10LD'(S)/1,5LA'(R)/1,5LA'(R)). Narcissistic self-sorting also took place between the positional isomer of the donor ligands (9,10LD and 1,5LD) to form individual homoligand assemblies [(9,10LD)4-(Zn2+)2 and (1,5LD)4-(Zn2+)2]. Conversely, statistical association took place in the Zn2L4 assembly process of an isomorphous pair of the donor and acceptor ligands (1,5LD and 1,5LA).
