Ionic Liquid Crystals Based on Loop-Shaped Copper(I) Complexes

This paper describes the synthesis and characterization of liquid crystals based on loop-shaped cationic copper(I) complexes of a multidentate ligand. Their synthesis involves the one-pot reaction of an alkyloxy-decorated pyridine-aldehyde unit with a diamine (2,2'-(ethylenedioxy)bis(ethylamine)) spacer to form in situ a pyridine-imine quadridentate-N4-donor ligand, L, which is able to chelate a copper(I) center associated with various noncoordinating anions. All of these compounds were characterized by NMR, IR, and electronic absorption spectroscopy, and more particularly by X-ray diffraction and mass spectroscopy, enabling unambiguous assignment of the [ML]+ mononuclear nature of the cationic components. The presence of six flexible alkyloxy chains at each end of the ligand associated with the rigidity of the core complex causes induction of a liquid crystal state with a columnar self-organized architecture, where the columns are packed in a hexagonal two-dimensional network.

Grafting Electron-Accepting Fragments on [4]cyclo-2,7-carbazole Scaffold: Tuning the Structural and Electronic Properties of Nanohoops

Since the first applications of nanohoops in organic electronics appear promising, the time has come to go deeper into their rational design in order to reach high-efficiency materials. To do so, systematic studies dealing with the incorporation of electron-rich and/or electron-poor functional units on nanohoops have to be performed. Herein, the synthesis, the electrochemical, photophysical, thermal, and structural properties of two [4]cyclo-2,7-carbazoles, [4]C-Py-Cbz, and [4]C-Pm-Cbz, possessing electron-withdrawing units on their nitrogen atoms (pyridine or pyrimidine) are reported. The synthesis of these nanohoops is first optimized and a high yield above 50% is reached. Through a structure-properties relationship study, it is shown that the substituent has a significant impact on some physicochemical properties (eg HOMO/LUMO levels) while others are kept unchanged (eg fluorescence). Incorporation in electronic devices shows that the most electrically efficient Organic Field-Effect transistors are obtained with [4]C-Py-Cbz although this compound does not present the best-organized semiconductor layer. These experimental data are finally confronted with the electronic couplings between the nanohoops determined at the DFT level and have highlighted the origin in the difference of charge transport properties. [4]C-Py-Cbz has the advantage of a more 2D-like transport character than [4]C-Pm-Cbz, which alleviates the impact of defects and structural organization.

Opportunities and new developments for the study of surfaces and interfaces in soft condensed matter at the SIRIUS beamline of Synchrotron SOLEIL

The SIRIUS beamline of Synchrotron SOLEIL is dedicated to X-ray scattering and spectroscopy of surfaces and interfaces, covering the tender to mid-hard X-ray range (1.1-13 keV). The beamline has hosted a wide range of experiments in the field of soft interfaces and beyond, providing various grazing-incidence techniques such as diffraction and wide-angle scattering (GIXD/GIWAXS), small-angle scattering (GISAXS) and X-ray fluorescence in total reflection (TXRF). SIRIUS also offers specific sample environments tailored for in situ complementary experiments on solid and liquid surfaces. Recently, the beamline has added compound refractive lenses associated with a transfocator, allowing for the X-ray beam to be focused down to 10 µm × 10 µm while maintaining a reasonable flux on the sample. This new feature opens up new possibilities for faster GIXD measurements at the liquid-air interface and for measurements on samples with narrow geometries.

Synthesis and mesomorphic properties of "side-on" hybrid liquid crystalline silsesquioxanes

Novel hybrid silsesquioxane-based liquid crystalline derivatives with varied lengths of spacers and tails have been synthesized by hydrosilylation reactions of octakis(dimethylsiloxy)silsesquioxane and side-on mesogens via a platinum catalyst. The thermal behavior of three types of silsesquioxane-based liquid crystals (LCs), differentiated by the molecular structure of mesogens, was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarising optical microscopy (POM). Temperature-dependent small and wide-angle X-ray scattering was used to verify liquid crystalline phases, revealing that the silsesquioxane-based derivatives formed hexagonal columnar and nematic mesophases, and the effect of the molecular structure of the mesogens and the spacer length on the formation of LC phases is discussed. This investigation demonstrated that the choice of the "side-on" attachments plays a crucial role in enhancing the emergence of the nematic phase.

Control of the Organization of 4,4'-bis(carbazole)-1,1'-biphenyl (CBP) Molecular Materials through Siloxane Functionalization

We show that through the introduction of short dimethylsiloxane chains, it was possible to suppress the crystalline state of CBP in favor of various types of organization, transitioning from a soft crystal to a fluid liquid crystal mesophase, then to a liquid state. Characterized by X-ray scattering, all organizations reveal a similar layered configuration in which layers of edge-on lying CBP cores alternate with siloxane. The difference between all CBP organizations essentially lay on the regularity of the molecular packing that modulates the interactions of neighboring conjugated cores. As a result, the materials show quite different thin film absorption and emission properties, which could be correlated to the features of the chemical architectures and the molecular organizations.

Structural investigation of titanium oxide nanowires with unconventional optoelectronic behaviour

Grazing incidence wide angle X-ray scattering measurements on aligned titanium oxide nanowires displaying anisotropic optical-electronic properties are carried out. Elemental and thermal analyses provide a chemical composition corresponding to H₂Ti₃O₇·nH₂O with n ≈ 1 while the crystallographic data indicate a monoclinic cell with a lamellar substructure. Cell parameters are close to those of H₂Ti₃O₇ notwithstanding a doubling of the lattice in the layer plane. A comparison of the band gap energy values and the electronic transition modes between the two polymorphs displays differences that could be ascribed to the structural variation.

A Confinement-Driven Nucleation Mechanism of Metal Oxide Nanoparticles Obtained via Thermal Decomposition in Organic Media

Thermal decomposition is a very efficient synthesis strategy to obtain nanosized metal oxides with controlled structures and properties. For the iron oxide nanoparticle synthesis, it allows an easy tuning of the nanoparticle's size, shape, and composition, which is often explained by the LaMer theory involving a clear separation between nucleation and growth steps. Here, the events before the nucleation of iron oxide nanocrystals are investigated by combining different complementary in situ characterization techniques. These characterizations are carried out not only on powdered iron stearate precursors but also on a preheated liquid reaction mixture. They reveal a new nucleation mechanism for the thermal decomposition method: instead of a homogeneous nucleation, the nucleation occurs within vesicle-like-nanoreactors confining the reactants. The different steps are: 1) the melting and coalescence of iron stearate particles, leading to "droplet-shaped nanostructures" acting as nanoreactors; 2) the formation of a hitherto unobserved iron stearate crystalline phase within the nucleation temperature range, simultaneously with stearate chains loss and Fe(III) to Fe(II) reduction; 3) the formation of iron oxide nuclei inside the nanoreactors, which are then ejected from them. This mechanism paves the way toward a better mastering of the metal oxide nanoparticles synthesis and the control of their properties.

Spin-Crossover in Supramolecular Iron(II)-2,6-bis(1H-Pyrazol-1-yl)pyridine Complexes: Toward Spin-State Switchable Single-Molecule Junctions

Spin-crossover (SCO) active iron(II) complexes are an integral class of switchable and bistable molecular materials. Spin-state switching properties of the SCO complexes have been studied in the bulk and single-molecule levels to progress toward fabricating molecule-based switching and memory elements. Supramolecular SCO complexes featuring anchoring groups for metallic electrodes, for example, gold (Au), are ideal candidates to study spin-state switching at the single-molecule level. In this study, we report on the spin-state switching characteristics of supramolecular iron(II) complexes 1 and 2 composed of functional 4-([2,2'-bithiophen]-5-ylethynyl)-2,6-di(1H-pyrazol-1-yl)pyridine (L1) and 4-(2-(5-(5-hexylthiophen-2-yl)thiophen-2-yl)ethynyl)-2,6-di(1H-pyrazol-1-yl)pyridine (L2) ligands, respectively. Density functional theory (DFT) studies revealed stretching-induced spin-state switching in a molecular junction composed of complex 1, taken as a representative example, and gold electrodes. Single-molecule conductance traces revealed the unfavorable orientation of the complexes in the junctions to demonstrate the spin-state dependence of the conductance.

A magnetocaloric glass from an ionic-liquid gadolinium complex

[Gd 5 (L) 16 (H 2 O) 8 ](Tf 2 N) 15 was obtained from reaction of Gd 2 O 3 with 1-carboxymethyl-3-ethylimidazolium chloride (LHCl). The material was found to be an ionic liquid that freezes to glassy state on cooling to -30°C. Variable-temperature magnetic studies reveal the presence of weak magnetic intramolecular interactions in the glass. Isothermal variable-field magnetization demonstrates a magnetocaloric effect (MCE), which is the first finding of such an effect in a molecular glass. This MCE explainable by an uncoupled representation, with a magnetic entropy change of -11.36 J K -1 kg -1 at 1.8 K for a 0-7 T magnetic field change, and with a refrigerant capacity of 125.9 J kg -1 , in the 1.8-50 K interval.

Ultra-narrow optical linewidths in rare-earth molecular crystals

Rare-earth ions (REIs) are promising solid-state systems for building light-matter interfaces at the quantum level^1,2. This relies on their potential to show narrow optical and spin homogeneous linewidths, or, equivalently, long-lived quantum states. This enables the use of REIs for photonic quantum technologies such as memories for light, optical-microwave transduction and computing^3-5. However, so far, few crystalline materials have shown an environment quiet enough to fully exploit REI properties. This hinders further progress, in particular towards REI-containing integrated nanophotonics devices^6,7. Molecular systems can provide such capability but generally lack spin states. If, however, molecular systems do have spin states, they show broad optical lines that severely limit optical-to-spin coherent interfacing^8-10. Here we report on europium molecular crystals that exhibit linewidths in the tens of kilohertz range, orders of magnitude narrower than those of other molecular systems. We harness this property to demonstrate efficient optical spin initialization, coherent storage of light using an atomic frequency comb, and optical control of ion-ion interactions towards implementation of quantum gates. These results illustrate the utility of rare-earth molecular crystals as a new platform for photonic quantum technologies that combines highly coherent emitters with the unmatched versatility in composition, structure and integration capability of molecular materials.

Functionalization of Biphenylcarbazole (CBP) with Siloxane-Hybrid Chains for Solvent-Free Liquid Materials

We report herein the synthesis of siloxane-functionalized CBP molecules (4,4′-bis(carbazole)-1,1′-biphenyl) for liquid optoelectronic applications. The room-temperature liquid state is obtained through a convenient functionalization of the molecules with heptamethyltrisiloxane chains via hydrosilylation of alkenyl spacers. The synthesis comprises screening of metal-catalyzed methodologies to introduce alkenyl linkers into carbazoles (Stille and Suzuki Miyaura cross-couplings), incorporate the alkenylcarbazoles to dihalobiphenyls (Ullmann coupling), and finally introduce the siloxane chains. The used conditions allowed the synthesis of the target compounds, despite the high reactivity of the alkenyl moieties bound to π-conjugated systems toward undesired side reactions such as polymerization, isomerization, and hydrogenation. The features of these solvent-free liquid CBP derivatives make them potentially interesting for fluidic optoelectronic applications.

Structural Insights into Hysteretic Spin-Crossover in a Set of Iron(II)-2,6-bis(1H-pyrazol-1-yl)pyridine) Complexes

Bistable spin‐crossover (SCO) complexes that undergo abrupt and hysteretic (ΔT_1/2) spin‐state switching are desirable for molecule‐based switching and memory applications. In this study, we report on structural facets governing hysteretic SCO in a set of iron(II)‐2,6‐bis(1H‐pyrazol‐1‐yl)pyridine) (bpp) complexes – [Fe(bpp−COOEt)₂](X)₂⋅CH₃NO₂ (X=ClO₄, 1; X=BF₄, 2). Stable spin‐state switching – T_1/2=288 K; ΔT_1/2=62 K – is observed for 1, whereas 2 undergoes above‐room‐temperature lattice‐solvent content‐dependent SCO – T_1/2=331 K; ΔT_1/2=43 K. Variable‐temperature single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction studies of the complexes revealed pronounced molecular reorganizations – from the Jahn‐Teller‐distorted HS state to the less distorted LS state – and conformation switching of the ethyl group of the COOEt substituent upon SCO. Consequently, we propose that the large structural reorganizations rendered SCO hysteretic in 1 and 2. Such insights shedding light on the molecular origin of thermal hysteresis might enable the design of technologically relevant molecule‐based switching and memory elements.

Modified pyridine-triazole and 2,2'-bipyrimidine ligands generating robust titanium complexes constructed around a TiO4N2 core

The synthesis and characterisation of novel chelate nitrogen ligands with phasmidic tails (pyridine-triazole ligand 1b; 2,2'-bipyrimidine ligands 2b and 3b) as well as their titanium(IV) coordination complexes are reported. The analogous ligands 1a, 2a and 3a with methoxy substituents instead of the tails were also synthesized, together with titanium complexes that could be crystallographically characterised. A good agreement is noticed between analytical data of the complexes in solution (NMR) and in the solid state (X-ray diffraction). The complexes are overall robust on phases like alumina or silica, so that they could be characterised by TLC and sometimes chromatographied. Supramolecular architectures were generated from an equimolar solution of titanium(IV) isopropoxide, ligand 1a and a polyphenol ligand 5-H₄, leading to a double-stranded helicate characterised by MS, NMR and crystallography, which was then converted into a trinuclear complex as shown by MS and NMR DOSY data. The liquid-crystalline behaviour of the ligands 1b, 2b and 3b incorporating the long alkyl tails and that of the complexes derived from these ligands have been investigated.

Iron Oxide/Polymer Core-Shell Nanomaterials with Star-like Behavior

Embedding nanoparticles (NPs) with organic shells is a way to control their aggregation behavior. Using polymers allows reaching relatively high shell thicknesses but suffers from the difficulty of obtaining regular hybrid objects at gram scale. Here, we describe a three-step synthesis in which multi-gram NP batches are first obtained by thermal decomposition, prior to their covalent grafting by an atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) initiator and to the controlled growing of the polymer shell. Specifically, non-aggregated iron oxide NPs with a core principally composed of γ-Fe₂O₃ (maghemite) and either polystyrene (PS) or polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) shell were elaborated. The oxide cores of about 13 nm diameter were characterized by dynamic light scattering (DLS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). After the polymerization, the overall diameter reached 60 nm, as shown by small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). The behavior in solution as well as rheological properties in the molten state of the polymeric shell resemble those of star polymers. Strategies to further improve the screening of NP cores with the polymer shells are discussed.

Iron Stearate Structures: An Original Tool for Nanoparticles Design

Iron carboxylates are widely used as iron precursors in the thermal decomposition process or considered as in situ formed intermediate precursors. Their molecular and three-dimensional (3D)-structural nature has been shown to affect the shape, size, and composition of the resulting iron oxide nanoparticles (NPs). Among carboxylate precursors, stearates are particularly attractive because of their higher stability to aging and hydration and they are used as additives in many applications. Despite the huge interest of iron stearates, very few studies aimed up to now at deciphering their full metal-ligand structures and the mechanisms allowing us to achieve in a controlled manner the bottom-up NP formation. In this work, we have thus investigated the molecular structure and composition of two iron stearate precursors, synthesized by introducing either two (FeSt₂) or three (FeSt₃) stearate (St) chains. Interestingly, both iron stearates consist of lamellar structures with planes of iron polynuclear complexes (polycations) separated with stearate chains in all-trans conformation. The iron content in polycations was found very different between both iron stearates. Their detailed characterizations indicate that FeSt₂ is mainly composed of [Fe₃-(μ₃-O)St₆·xH₂O]Cl, with no (or few) free stearate, whereas FeSt₃ is a mixture of mainly [Fe₇(μ₃-O(H))₆(μ₂-OH)_xSt_12-2x]St with some [Fe₃(μ₃-O)St₆·xH₂O]St and free stearic acid. The formation of bigger polynuclear complexes with FeSt₃ was related to higher hydrolysis and condensation rates within the iron(III) chloride solution compared to the iron(II) chloride solution. These data suggested a nucleation mechanism based on the condensation of polycation radicals generated by the catalytic departure of two stearate chains from an iron polycation-based molecule.

[4]Cyclo-N-alkyl-2,7-carbazoles: Influence of the Alkyl Chain Length on the Structural, Electronic, and Charge Transport Properties

Macrocycles possessing radially oriented π-orbitals have experienced a fantastic development. However, their incorporation in organic electronic devices remains very scarce. In this work, we aim at bridging the gap between organic electronics and nanorings by reporting the first detailed structure-properties-device performance relationship study of organic functional materials based on a nanoring system. Three [4]cyclo-N-alkyl-2,7-carbazoles bearing different alkyl chains on their nitrogen atoms have been synthesized and characterized by combined experimental and theoretical approaches. This study includes electrochemical, photophysical, thermal, and structural solid-state measurements and charge transport properties investigations. An optimized protocol of the Pt approach has been developed to synthesize the [4]cyclocarbazoles in high yield (52-64%), of great interest for further development of nanorings, especially in materials science. The charge transport properties of [4]cyclocarbazoles and model compound [8]cycloparaphenylene ([8]CPP) have been studied. Although no field effect (FE) mobility was recorded for the benchmark [8]CPP, FE mobility values of ca. 10^-5 cm²·V^-1·s^-1 were recorded for the [4]cyclocarbazoles. The characteristics (threshold voltage V_TH, subthreshold swing SS, trapping energy ΔE) recorded for the three [4]cyclocarbazoles appear to be modulated by the alkyl chain length borne by the nitrogen atoms. Remarkably, the space-charge-limited current mobilities measured for the [4]cyclocarbazoles are about 3 orders of magnitude higher than that of [8]CPP (1.37/2.78 × 10^-4 cm²·V^-1·s^-1 for the [4]cyclocarbazoles vs 1.21 × 10^-7 cm²·V^-1·s^-1 for [8]CPP), highlighting the strong effect of nitrogen bridges on the charge transport properties. The whole study opens the way to the use of nanorings in electronics, which is now the next step of their development.

Gel-to-gel non-variant transition of an organogel caused by polymorphism from nanotubes to crystallites

An amide based gelator forms gels in trans-decalin. Below concentrations of 1 wt% the gels melt at temperatures varying with concentration. Above a concentration of 1 wt%, upon heating, the gel transforms into an opaque gel at an invariant temperature, and melts at higher temperature. The gel-to-gel transition is evidenced by several techniques: DSC, rheology, NMR, OM and turbidimetry. The phase diagram with the domain of the existence of both morphs was mapped by these techniques. Optical and electronic microscopy studies show that the first gel corresponds to the self-assembled nanotubes while the second gel is formed by crystalline fibers. The fibers are crystalline, as shown by the presence of Bragg peaks in the scattering curves. Both morphs correspond to a different H-bonding pattern as shown by FTIR. The first gel forms at a higher cooling rate, is metastable and transforms slowly into the second one. The second gel is stable. It forms at a low cooling rate, or by thermal annealing or aging of the first gel.

Photoactive Organic/Inorganic Hybrid Materials with Nanosegregated Donor-Acceptor Arrays

The synthesis of the first mesogenic donor-acceptor polyoxometalate (POM)-based hybrid is herein described. The structural and electronic properties of the hybrid compound were evaluated through combination of small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering, optical microscopy, electrochemistry and photoluminescence. In the solid state, the compound behaves as a birefringent solid, displaying a lamellar organization in which double-layers of POMs and bis(thiophene)thienothiophene organic donors alternate regularly. Noticeably, the sub-unit organizations in the composite are similar to that observed for the individual POM and organic donor precursors. Photophysical studies show that in the hybrid, the fluorescence of the organic donor unit is considerably quenched both in solution and in the solid state, which is attributed to occurrence of intramolecular charge-separated state.

Effect of the electron donating group on the excited-state electronic nature and epsilon-near-zero properties of curcuminoid-borondifluoride dyes

Epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) properties have been reported in organic molecular films. In particular, cyanine and squaraine films have been shown to exhibit ENZ properties in the visible spectral region with a strong 3^rd order nonlinear optical response near the ENZ spectral region. Noting both cyanine and squaraine belong to the polymethine family, a series of six curcuminoid borondifluoride (Curc) derivatives were developed to examine whether such a polymethine character is positively correlated with the ENZ property of the organic films. Those Curc derivatives possess a Donor–Acceptor–Donor (D–A–D) architecture with acceptor, AcacBF₂, located at the molecular center. The backbone of Curc is designed such that the donor strength can be tuned to transit between charge transfer (CT) and polymethine character. This balance between CT and polymethine character of the Curc series is examined based on the Lippert–Mataga plot. As donor strength in the D–A–D structure increases, CT character is less marked resulting in a more dominant polymethine character. The structural and optical properties of the Curc films with a thickness in the order of 30 nm were examined to correlate the polymethine character with the ENZ response. The results obtained in isotropic Curc thin films demonstrate that an increase of polymethine character associated with a stronger donor strength leads to an appearance/enhancement of the ENZ property in the visible spectrum range from 500 to 670 nm. Overall, this study provides useful guidelines to engineer new organic materials showing ENZ properties in a desired spectral range.

Epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) properties have been reported in organic molecular films.

Bistable spin-crossover in a new series of [Fe(BPP-R)2]2+ (BPP = 2,6-bis(pyrazol-1-yl)pyridine; R = CN) complexes

Spin-crossover (SCO) active transition metal complexes are a class of switchable molecular materials. Such complexes undergo hysteretic high-spin (HS) to low-spin (LS) transition, and vice versa, rendering them suitable for the development of molecule-based switching and memory elements. Therefore, the search for SCO complexes undergoing abrupt and hysteretic SCO, that is, bistable SCO, is actively carried out by the molecular magnetism community. In this study, we report the bistable SCO characteristics associated with a new series of iron(ii) complexes-[Fe(BPP-CN)2](X)2, X = BF4 (1a-d) or ClO4 (2)-belonging to the [Fe(BPP-R)2]2+ (BPP = 2,6-bis(pyrazol-1-yl)pyridine) family of complexes. Among the complexes, the lattice solvent-free complex 2 showed a stable and complete SCO (T1/2 = 241 K) with a thermal hysteresis width (ΔT) of 28 K-the widest ΔT reported so far for a [Fe(BPP-R)2](X)2 family of complexes, showing abrupt SCO. The reproducible and bistable SCO shown by the relatively simple [Fe(BPP-CN)2](X)2 series of molecular complexes is encouraging to pursue [Fe(BPP-R)2]2+ systems for the realization of technologically relevant SCO complexes.

Dipyrrolyldiketonato Titanium(IV) Complexes from Monomeric to Multinuclear Architectures: Synthesis, Stability, and Liquid-Crystal Properties

Dipyrrolyldiketone ligands (dpkH) are used with Ti(OⁱPr)₄ to afford monomeric titanium(IV) complexes displaying the general formula C₂-[Ti(dpk)₂(OⁱPr)₂]. The dpkH ligands employed consist of two dipyrrolyldiketone compounds (2H and 3H) and three diphenyl-substituted analogues (4H-6H). The behavior of these octahedral [Ti(dpk)₂(OⁱPr)₂] species in solution was investigated by ¹H NMR at variable temperatures. Dynamic phenomena were evidenced, and the activation parameters associated with these processes (ΔH^⧧, ΔS^⧧, and ΔG^⧧) were retrieved. [Ti(dpk)₂(OⁱPr)₂] complexes are precursors for the formation of high-nuclearity aggregates whose structures depend on the substituents on the diketone backbone. The crystal structures of monomeric ([Ti(1)₂(OⁱPr)₂]; 1 is the 1,3-diphenyl-1,3-propanedionato ligand) and [Ti(2)₂(OEt)₂]), dimeric ([Ti₂(1)₄(μ₂-O)₂]), and tetrameric ([Ti₄(4)₈(μ₂-O)₄]) species have been established, and the origin of this structural diversity is discussed. The solid-state optical properties of several complexes were determined and interpreted with the help of DFT calculations. Finally, the dinuclear complex [Ti(6)₂(μ₂-O)₂] was synthesized, where ligand 6 incorporates six long alkyl chains (C₁₆H₃₃). This complex shows rich mesomorphic properties, with an original room-temperature plastic crystal phase followed by a hexagonal columnar liquid-crystalline phase.

Spin-crossover in iron(II)-phenylene ethynylene-2,6-di(pyrazol-1-yl) pyridine hybrids: toward switchable molecular wire-like architectures

Luminescent oligo(p-phenylene ethynylene) (OPE) and spin-crossover (SCO) active Fe(II)-2,6-di(pyrazol-1-yl) pyridine (BPP) systems are prominent examples proposed to develop functional materials such as molecular wires/memories. A marriage between OPE and Fe(II)-BPP systems is a strategy to obtain supramolecular luminescent ligands capable of metal coordination useful to produce novel spin-switchable hybrids with synergistic coupling between spin-state of Fe(II) and a physical property associated with the OPE skeleton, for example, electronic conductivity or luminescence. To begin in this direction, two novel ditopic ligands, namely L¹ and L², featuring OPE-type backbone end-capped with metal coordinating BPP were designed and synthetized. The ligand L² tailored with 2-ethylhexyloxy chains at the 2 and 5 positions of the OPE skeleton shows modulated optical properties and improved solubility in common organic solvents relative to the parent ligand L¹. Solution phase complexation of L¹ and L² with Fe(BF₄)₂·6H₂O resulted in the formation of insoluble materials of the composition [Fe(L¹)] _n (BF₄)_2n and [Fe(L²)] _n (BF₄)_2n as inferred from elemental analyses. Complex [Fe(L¹)] _n (BF₄)_2n underwent thermal SCO centred at T _1/2  =  275 K as well as photoinduced low-spin to high-spin transition with the existence of the metastable high-spin state up to 52 K. On the other hand, complex [Fe(L²)] _n (BF₄)_2n , tethered with 2-ethylhexyloxy groups, showed gradual and half-complete SCO with 50% of the Fe(II)-centres permanently blocked in the high-spin state due to intermolecular steric interactions. The small angle x-ray scattering (SAXS) pattern of the as-prepared solid complex [Fe(L¹)] _n (BF₄)_2n revealed the presence of nm-sized crystallites implying a possible methodology towards the template-free synthesis of functional-SCO nanostructures.

Nonlinear Nonacenes with a Dithienothiophene Substructure: Multifunctional Compounds that Act as Columnar Mesogens, Luminophores, π Gelators, and p-Type Semiconductors

Board-like liquid-crystalline semiconductors based on the dithieno[3,2-b;2',3'-d]thiophene (DTT) substructure were synthesized and their thermal, self-assembly, optical, and semiconducting properties investigated. These sanidic compounds, bearing eight peripheral chains, are mesomorphic and spontaneously self-assemble into columnar hexagonal mesophases (Col_hex ) over broad temperature ranges, as confirmed by polarized optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and small-angle X-ray scattering. Strong blue photoluminescence with absolute quantum yields up to 33 % were measured. These compounds also form blue-light emitting gels in various organic solvents. The fibrillar-like morphology of these gels, reminiscent of the columnar structure, and stabilized by efficient intermolecular interactions, was characterized by scanning electron microscopy. The charge carrier mobility of these π-extended mesogens was measured by time-of-flight transient photocurrent technique in the Col_hex mesophase, and showed good hole-transport performance with charge carrier mobility of 10^-3  cm²  V^-1  s^-1 .

Bi-stable spin-crossover in charge-neutral [Fe(R-ptp)2] (ptp = 2-(1H-pyrazol-1-yl)-6-(1H-tetrazol-5-yl)pyridine) complexes

Bi-stable charge-neutral iron(ii) spin-crossover (SCO) complexes are a class of switchable molecular materials proposed for molecule-based switching and memory applications. In this study, we report on the SCO behavior of a series of iron(ii) complexes composed of rationally designed 2-(1H-pyrazol-1-yl)-6-(1H-tetrazol-5-yl)pyridine (ptp) ligands. The powder forms of [Fe²⁺(R-ptp^-)₂]⁰ complexes tethered with less-bulky substituents-R = H (1), R = CH₂OH (2), and R = COOCH₃ (3; previously reported)-at the 4-position of the pyridine ring of the ptp skeleton showed abrupt and hysteretic SCO at or above room temperature (RT), whereas complex 5 featuring a bulky pyrene substituent showed incomplete and gradual SCO behavior. The role of intermolecular interactions, lattice solvent, and electronic nature of the chemical substituents (R) in tuning the SCO of the complexes is elucidated.

Supramolecular Arene-Ruthenium Metallacycle with Thermotropic Liquid-Crystalline Properties

Functionalization of 1,4-di(4-pyridinyl)benzene with poly(arylester) dendrimers bearing cyanobiphenyl end-groups gives a bidentate dendromesogenic ligand (L) that exhibits thermotropic liquid-crystalline properties. Combination of the diruthenium complex [Ru₂(p-cymene)₂(donq)][DDS]₂ (M) with L, by coordination-driven self-assembly, affords the discrete and well-defined metallacycle M₂L₂. Like L, this supramolecular dendritic system displays mesomorphic properties above 50 °C. Both compounds L and M₂L₂ show smectic phases, characterized by a multilayered organization of the multiple components.

Board-like Fused-Thiophene Liquid Crystals and their Benzene Analogs: Facile Synthesis, Self-Assembly, p-Type Semiconductivity, and Photoluminescence

Fused-thiophene discotic liquid crystals were designed and easily synthesized by Suzuki coupling and FeCl₃ oxidized tandem cyclodehydrogenation reactions, including homo- and cross-coupling reactions. The resulting hexagonal and rectangular columnar mesomorphic supramolecular structures formed were characterized by polarizing optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and small-angle X-ray scattering. The charge carrier transport properties in the mesophases of two of the synthesized fused-thiophene discogens were measured by transient photocurrent time-of-flight (TOF) technique, revealing fast hole transport values in the range of 10^-3 to 10^-2  cm²  V^-1  s^-1 , thus demonstrating potential applications in electronic devices. The luminescent sanidic mesogens, with different extended π-conjugated systems, also emit blue, green, or red light, with absolute photoluminescent quantum yields as high as 18 %.

Bi-stable spin-crossover characteristics of a highly distorted [Fe(1-BPP-COOC2H5)2](ClO4)2·CH3CN complex

A HS Fe(ii) complex, see figure, with a pronounced angular distortion (ϕ) = 158.83(17)° showed lattice solvent dependent spin-state switching characteristics with a thermal hysteresis width (ΔT) of 101 K.

Triphenylene-Imidazolium Salts and Their NHC Metal Complexes, Materials with Segregated Multicolumnar Mesophases

Two imidazolium salts containing one or two pentadodecyloxytriphenylene units linked through a hexyloxy chain and Br^-, [AuBr _mCl_{4- m}]^-, or [PtBr _mCl_{4- m}]^2- ( m = 0-3) as counterion have been prepared. Reaction of the imidazolium bromides with M₂O (M = Cu, Ag), or carbene transmetalation from the silver product, leads to N-heterocyclic carbene complexes [MX(NHC)] (M = Cu, X = Br; M = Au, X = Cl, C≡CPh), [Ag(NHC)₂][AgBr₂], and [PtCl₂(NHC)₂], with NHC bearing one or two triphenylene fragments. Except for the gold derivatives and one Cu complex, the rest of them behave as liquid crystals organized in columnar mesophases (rectangular c2 mm or p2mg or hexagonal p6mm symmetries) with melting points in the range 30 to 60 °C and clearing points in the range 57-112 °C. The mesophase structures were determined by small-angle X-ray scattering. Structural studies and models point to nanosegregation of triphenylene columns and imidazolium/metal carbene moieties, separated by alkoxy chains, leading to multicolumnar systems. The compounds display emission spectra related to the triphenylene core in solution, in the mesophase, in the isotropic liquid, and in the solid state.

Liquid-Crystalline Tris[60]fullerodendrimers

Liquid-crystalline tris[60]fullerodendrimers based on first- and second-generation poly(arylester)dendrons carrying cyanobiphenyl mesogens were synthesized for the first time by the olefin cross-metathesis reaction between type I (terminal) and type II (α,β-unsaturated carbonyl) olefinic precursors, using a second-generation Grubbs or Hoveyda-Grubbs catalyst. The modular synthetic approach developed here also allowed the selective preparation of the [60]fullerene-free, mono[60]fullerodendrimer, and bis[60]fullerodendrimer derivatives from the appropriate precursors. As revealed by polarized optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and small-angle X-ray scattering, all of the materials displayed liquid-crystalline properties. In agreement with the nature of the dendritic building blocks, the emergence of lamellar mesophases (smectic C and/or smectic A phases), with the segregation of the various constitutive parts, was systematically observed. The small variation of the mesomorphic temperature range and of the mesophase stability suggested that the mesomorphism is essentially dominated by the dendrimer itself and is regulated by a subtle adaptive mechanism, in which the proportion of monolayering and bilayering arrangements of the multisegregated lamellar mesophases is modified in order to compensate the space requirements of each of the elementary building blocks, namely, the [60]fullerene units, the cyanobiphenyl mesogens, and the dendritic matrix.

Engineering On-Surface Spin Crossover: Spin-State Switching in a Self-Assembled Film of Vacuum-Sublimable Functional Molecule

The realization of spin-crossover (SCO)-based applications requires study of the spin-state switching characteristics of SCO complex molecules within nanostructured environments, especially on surfaces. Except for a very few cases, the SCO of a surface-bound thin molecular film is either quenched or heavily altered due to: (i) molecule-surface interactions and (ii) differing intermolecular interactions in films relative to the bulk. By fabricating SCO complexes on a weakly interacting surface, the interfacial quenching problem is tackled. However, engineering intermolecular interactions in thin SCO active films is rather difficult. Here, a molecular self-assembly strategy is proposed to fabricate thin spin-switchable surface-bound films with programmable intermolecular interactions. Molecular engineering of the parent complex system [Fe(H₂ B(pz)₂ )₂ (bpy)] (pz = pyrazole, bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine) with a dodecyl (C₁₂ ) alkyl chain yields a classical amphiphile-like functional and vacuum-sublimable charge-neutral Fe^II complex, [Fe(H₂ B(pz)₂ )₂ (C₁₂ -bpy)] (C₁₂ -bpy = dodecyl[2,2'-bipyridine]-5-carboxylate). Both the bulk powder and 10 nm thin films sublimed onto either quartz glass or SiO_x surfaces of the complex show comparable spin-state switching characteristics mediated by similar lamellar bilayer like self-assembly/molecular interactions. This unprecedented observation augurs well for the development of SCO-based applications, especially in molecular spintronics.

Heterogeneous microwave-assisted Ullmann type methodology for synthesis of rigid-core ionic liquid crystals

Incompatibility-Driven Self-Organization in Polycatenar Liquid Crystals Bearing Both Hydrocarbon and Fluorocarbon Chains

The synthesis and liquid crystal properties are reported for tri- and tetra-catenar mesogens in which both hydrocarbon and semiperfluorocarbon chains have been incorporated. In the tricatenar mesogens, the lamellar spacing in the smectic C phase of the all-hydrocarbon mesogen almost doubles when the isolated hydrocarbon chain is replaced by a semiperfluorinated chain on account of the localized segregation in different sublayers between the two chain types. In the tetracatenar materials, the replacement of at least one hydrocarbon chain by semiperfluorocarbon chains is sufficient to promote columnar phase formation, but when the molecule has two hydrocarbon chains at one end and two semiperfluorocarbon chains at the other, the requirement for localized phase segregation leads to the formation of a rectangular phase with very large lattice parameters. The juxtaposition of terminal chains of different nature within the same molecular structure thus leads to a reduction in mesophase symmetry and the emergence of more complex supramolecular organization.
