Crown Ether Complexes of Alkali‐Metal Chlorides from SO 2

Hydrogen Bonds Stabilize Chloroselenite Anions: Crystal Structure of a New Salt and Donor-Acceptor Bonding to SeO2

The single-crystal X-ray diffraction structure characterizing a new 4-methylbenzamidinium salt of chloroselenite [C8H11N2][ClSeO2] is reported. This is only the second crystal structure report on a ClSeO2- salt. The structure contains an extended planar hydrogen bond net, including a double interaction with both O atoms of the anion (an R228 ring in Etter notation). The anion has the shortest Se-Cl distances on record for any chloroselenite ion, 2.3202(9) Å. However, the two Se-O distances are distinct at 1.629(2) and 1.645(2) Å, attributed to weak anion-anion bridging involving the oxygen with the longer bond. DFT computations at the RB3PW91-D3/aug-CC-pVTZ level of theory reproduce the short Se-Cl distance in a gas-phase optimized ion pair, but free optimization of ClSeO2- leads to an elongation of this bond. A good match to a known value for [Me4N][ClSeO2] is found, which fits to the Raman spectroscopic evidence for this long-known salt and to data measured on solutions of the anion in CH3CN. The assignment of the experimental Raman spectrum was corrected by means of the DFT-computed vibrational spectrum, confirming the strong mixing of the symmetry coordinate of the Se-Cl stretch with both ν2 and ν4 modes.

Crystal structures of polymerized lithium chloride and dimethyl sulfoxide in the form of {2LiCl·3DMSO} n and {LiCl·DMSO} n

Two novel LiCl·DMSO polymer structures were created by combining dry LiCl salt with dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), namely, catena-poly[[chlorido-lithium(I)]-μ-(dimethyl sulfoxide)-κ² O:O-[chlorido-lithium(I)]-di-μ-(dimethyl sulfoxide)-κ⁴ O:O], [Li₂Cl₂(C₂H₆OS)₃] _n , and catena-poly[lithium(I)-μ-chlorido-μ-(dimethyl sulfoxide)-κ² O:O], [LiCl(C₂H₆OS)] _n . The initial synthesized phase had very small block-shaped crystals (<0.08 mm) with monoclinic symmetry and a 2 LiCl: 3 DMSO ratio. As the solution evaporated, a second phase formed with a plate-shaped crystal morphology. After about 20 minutes, large (>0.20 mm) octa-hedron-shaped crystals formed. The plate crystals and the octa-hedron crystals are the same tetra-gonal structure with a 1 LiCl: 1 DMSO ratio. These structures are reported and compared to other known LiCl·solvent compounds.

Deoxygenation of chalcogen oxides EO2 (E = S, Se) with phospha-Wittig reagents

In here we present the deoxygenation of the chalcogen oxides EO₂ (E = S, Se) with R-P(PMe₃), so-called phospha-Wittig reagents. The reaction of DABSO (DABCO·2SO₂) with R-P(PMe₃) (R = Mes*, 2,4,6-tBu₃-C₆H₂; ^MesTer, 2,6-(2,4,6-Me₃-C₆H₂)₂-C₆H₃) resulted in the formation of thiadiphosphiranes (RP)₂S (1:R), while selenadiphosphiranes (RP)₂Se (2:R) were afforded with SeO₂, both accompanied by the formation of OPMe₃. Utilizing the sterically more encumbered ^DipTer-P(PMe₃) (^DipTer = 2,6-(2,6-iPr₂-C₆H₃)₂-C₆H₃) a different selectivity was observed and (^DipTerP)₂Se (2:DipTer) along with [Se(μ-P^DipTer)]₂ (3:DipTer) were isolated as the Se-containing species in the reaction with SeO₂. Interestingly, the reaction with DABSO (or with equimolar ratios of SeO₂ at elevated temperatures) gave rise to the formation of the OPMe₃-stabilized dioxophosphorane (phosphinidene dioxide) ^DipTerP(O)₂-OPMe₃ (4:DipTer) as the main product. This contrasting reactivity can be rationalized by two potential pathways in the reaction with EO₂: (i) a Wittig-type pathway and (ii) a pathway involving oxygenation of the phospha-Wittig reagents and release of SO. Thus, phospha-Wittig reagents are shown to be useful synthetic tools for the metal-free deoxygenation of EO₂ (E = S, Se).

Heterocyclic Crown Ethers with Potential Biological and Pharmacological Properties: From Synthesis to Applications

Cyclic organic compounds with several ether linkages in their structure are of much concern in our daily life applications. Crown ethers (CEs) are generally heterocyclic and extremely versatile compounds exhibiting higher binding affinity. In recent years, due to their unique structure, crown ethers are widely used in drug delivery, solvent extraction, cosmetics manufacturing, material studies, catalysis, separation, and organic synthesis. Beyond their conventional place in chemistry, this review article summarizes the synthesis, biological, and potential pharmacological activities of CEs. We have emphasized the prospects of CEs as anticancer, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antifungal agents and have explored their amyloid genesis inhibitory activity, electrochemical, and potential metric sensing properties. The central feature of these compounds is their ability to form selective and stable complexes with various organic and inorganic cations. Therefore, CEs can be used in gas chromatography as the stationary phase and are also valuable for cation chromatographic to determine and separate alkali and alkaline-earth cations.

Ground and excited states analysis of alkali metal ethylenediamine and crown ether complexes

High-level electronic structure calculations are carried out to obtain optimized geometries and excitation energies of neutral lithium, sodium, and potassium complexes with two ethylenediamine and one or two crown ether molecules. Three different sizes of crowns are employed (12-crown-4, 15-crown-5, 18-crown-6). The ground state of all complexes contains an electron in an s-type orbital. For the mono-crown ether complexes, this orbital is the polarized valence s-orbital of the metal, but for the other systems this orbital is a peripheral diffuse orbital. The nature of the low-lying electronic states is found to be different for each of these species. Specifically, the metal ethylenediamine complexes follow the previously discovered shell model of metal ammonia complexes (1s, 1p, 1d, 2s, 1f), but both mono- and sandwich di-crown ether complexes bear a different shell model partially due to their lower (cylindrical) symmetry and the stabilization of the 2s-type orbital. Li(15-crown-5) is the only complex with the metal in the middle of the crown ether and adopts closely the shell model of metal ammonia complexes. Our findings suggest that the electronic band structure of electrides (metal crown ether sandwich aggregates) and expanded metals (metal ammonia aggregates) should be different despite the similar nature of these systems (bearing diffuse electrons around a metal complex).

Beryllium coordination chemistry and its implications on the understanding of metal induced immune responses

The coordination chemistry of beryllium with ligands containing biologically relevant functional groups is discussed. The geometry, speciation and reactivity of these compounds, aids a better understanding of metal ion induced immune reactions.

Pillar[5]arene-based supramolecular AIE hydrogel with white light emission for ultrasensitive detection and effective separation of multianalytes

A novel pillar[5]arene-based supramolecular AIE hydrogel (PDG) with white light emission was constructed. The PDG could be used for ultrasensitive detection and effective separation of multianalytes, and as fluorescent display materials.

Alkaline Earth Metal Template (Cross-)Coupling Reactions with Hybrid Disila-Crown Ether Analogues

Alkaline earth metal iodides were used as templates for the synthesis of novel silicon-based ligands. Siloxane moieties were (cross-)coupled and ion-specific, silicon-rich crown ether analogues were obtained. The reaction of 1,2,7,8-tetrasila[12]crown-4 (I) and 1,2-disila[9]crown-3 (II) with MgI2 yielded exclusively [Mg(1,2,7,8-tetrasila[12]crown-4)I2 ] (1). The larger Ca2+ ion was then employed for cross-coupling of I and II and yielded the complex [Ca(1,2,7,8-tetrasila[15]crown-5)I2 ] (2). Cross-coupling of I and 1,2,4,5-tetrasila[9]crown-3 (III) with SrI2 enables the synthesis of the silicon-dominant 1,2,4,5,10,11-hexasila[15]crown-5 ether complex of SrI2 (3). Further, the compounds [Sr(1,2,10,11-tetrasila[18]crown-6)I2 ] (4), [Sr(1,2,13,14-tetrasila[24]crown-8)I2 ] (5), and [Sr(1,2,13,14-tetrasila-dibenzo[24]crown-8)I2 ] (6) were obtained by coupling I, 1,2-disila[12]crown-4 (IV) or 1,2-disila-benzo[12]crown-4 (V), respectively. Using various anions, the (cross-)coupled ligands were also observed in an X-ray structure within the mentioned complexes. These template-assisted (cross-)couplings of various ligands are the first of their kind and a novel method to obtain macrocycles and/or their metal complexes to be established. Further, the Si-O bond activations presented herein might be of importance for silane or even organic functionalization.

Not Non-Coordinating at All: Coordination Compounds of the Cyclodimethylsiloxanes Dn (D = Me2SiO; n = 6, 7) and Group 2 Metal Cations

We present the coordination chemistry of the cyclodimethylsiloxanes D₆ and D₇ toward alkaline earth metal salts. The coordination chemistry of these macrocycles toward alkaline earth metals has been unprecedented to date, and we could show that these ligands coordinate better than previously thought. Direct reaction of alkaline earth metal salts with these ligands yields stable complexes even with a relatively strongly coordinating iodide anion. A handful of counterintuitive coordination compounds could be characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Quantum chemical calculations of suited Born-Haber cycles showed that these complexes are indeed stable, for Mg²⁺ and Ca²⁺ even with iodide employed as the anion and for Sr²⁺ and Ba²⁺ in the presence of GaI₃.

The Chalcogen Bond in Crystalline Solids: A World Parallel to Halogen Bond

The distribution of the electron density around covalently bonded atoms is anisotropic, and this determines the presence, on atoms surface, of areas of higher and lower electron density where the electrostatic potential is frequently negative and positive, respectively. The ability of positive areas on atoms to form attractive interactions with electron rich sites became recently the subject of a flurry of papers. The halogen bond (HaB), the attractive interaction formed by halogens with nucleophiles, emerged as a quite common and dependable tool for controlling phenomena as diverse as the binding of small molecules to proteinaceous targets or the organization of molecular functional materials. The mindset developed in relation to the halogen bond prompted the interest in the tendency of elements of groups 13-16 of the periodic table to form analogous attractive interactions with nucleophiles. This Account addresses the chalcogen bond (ChB), the attractive interaction formed by group 16 elements with nucleophiles, by adopting a crystallographic point of view. Structures of organic derivatives are considered where chalcogen atoms form close contacts with nucleophiles in the geometry typical for chalcogen bonds. It is shown how sulfur, selenium, and tellurium can all form chalcogen bonds, the tendency to give rise to close contacts with nucleophiles increasing with the polarizability of the element. Also oxygen, when conveniently substituted, can form ChBs in crystalline solids. Chalcogen bonds can be strong enough to allow for the interaction to function as an effective and robust tool in crystal engineering. It is presented how chalcogen containing heteroaromatics, sulfides, disulfides, and selenium and tellurium analogues as well as some other molecular moieties can afford dependable chalcogen bond based supramolecular synthons. Particular attention is given to chalcogen containing azoles and their derivatives due to the relevance of these moieties in biosystems and molecular materials. It is shown how the interaction pattern around electrophilic chalcogen atoms frequently recalls the pattern around analogous halogen, pnictogen, and tetrel derivatives. For instance, directionalities of chalcogen bonds around sulfur and selenium in some thiazolium and selenazolium derivatives are similar to directionalities of halogen bonds around bromine and iodine in bromonium and iodonium compounds. This gives experimental evidence that similarities in the anisotropic distribution of the electron density in covalently bonded atoms translates in similarities in their recognition and self-assembly behavior. For instance, the analogies in interaction patterns of carbonitrile substituted elements of groups 17, 16, 15, and 14 will be presented. While the extensive experimental and theoretical data available in the literature prove that HaB and ChB form twin supramolecular synthons in the solid, more experimental information has to become available before such a statement can be safely extended to interactions wherein elements of groups 14 and 15 are the electrophiles. It will nevertheless be possible to develop some general heuristic principles for crystal engineering. Being based on the groups of the periodic table, these principles offer the advantage of being systematic.

Hybrid Disila-Crown Ethers as Hosts for Ammonium Cations: The O–Si–Si–O Linkage as an Acceptor for Hydrogen Bonding

Host-guest chemistry was performed with disilane-bearing crown ethers and the ammonium cation. Equimolar reactions of 1,2-disila[18]crown-6 (1) or 1,2-disila-benzo[18]crown-6 (2) and NH4PF6 in dichloromethane yielded the respective compounds [NH4(1,2-disila[18]crown-6)]PF6 (3) and [NH4(1,2-disila-benzo[18]crown-6)]PF6 (4). According to X-ray crystallographic, NMR, and IR experiments, the uncommon hydrogen bonding motif O(Si)∙∙∙H could be observed and the use of cooperative effects of ethylene and disilane bridges as an effective way to incorporate guest molecules was illustrated.
