The phosphinoboration of thiosemicarbazones

This study reports on the exploration of the phosphinoboration reaction with several thiosemicarbazones (R5R4NC(S)NR3N=CR1R2). Reactions between either Ph2PBpin (pin = 1,2-O2C2Me4) or Ph2PBcat (cat = 1,2-O2C6H4) with thiosemicarbazones containing a terminal primary or secondary amine afforded boron-containing heterocyclic 1,3,4-thiadiazoline products in excellent yield. The addition of Ph2PBpin to thiosemicarbazones containing an NMe2 group in the terminal position generated novel five-membered heterocycles in moderate yield, which included boron, sulfur, and nitrogen atoms. Heterocyclization of the thiosemicarbazones occurs preferentially in the presence of functional groups such as acetyl and pyridyl groups.

An Iridium-Stabilized Borenium Intermediate

Exploration of new organometallic systems based on polyhedral boron clusters has the potential to solve challenging chemical problems such as the stabilization of reactive intermediates and transition-state-like species postulated for E-H (E = H, B, C, Si) bond activation reactions. We report on facile and clean B-H activation of a hydroborane by a new iridium boron cluster complex. The product of this reaction is an unprecedented and fully characterized transition metal-stabilized boron cation or borenium. Moreover, this intermediate bears an unusual intramolecular B···H interaction between the hydrogen originating from the activated hydroborane and the cyclometallated metal-bonded boron atom of the boron cluster. This B···H interaction is proposed to be an arrested insertion of hydrogen into the B_cage-metal bond and the initiation step for iridium "cage-walking" around the upper surface of the boron cluster. The "cage-walking" process is supported by the hydrogen-deuterium exchange observed at the boron cluster, and a mechanism is proposed on the basis of theoretical methods with a special focus on the role of noncovalent interactions. All new compounds were isolated and fully characterized by NMR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. Key compounds were studied by single crystal X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.

Monomeric Triphosphinoboranes: Intramolecular Lewis Acid–Base Interactions between Boron and Phosphorus Atoms

Herein, we present the synthesis of the first fully characterized monomeric triphosphinoboranes. The simple reaction of boron tribromide with 3 equiv of bulky lithium phosphide tBu₂PLi yielded triphosphinoborane (tBu₂P)₃B. Triphosphinoboranes with diversified phosphanyl substituents were obtained via a two-step reaction, in which isolable bromodiphosphinoborane (tBu₂P)₂BBr is first formed and then reacts with 1 equiv of less bulky phosphide R₂PLi (R₂P = Cy₂P, iPr₂P, tBuPhP, or Ph₂P). By utilizing this method, we obtained a series of triphosphinoboranes with the general formula (tBu₂P)₂BPR₂. On the basis of structural and theoretical studies, two main types of triphosphinoborane structures can be distinguished. In the first type, all three electron lone pairs interact with the formally empty p orbital of the central boron atom, resulting in delocalized π bonding, whereas in the second type, one localized P=B bond and two P–B bonds are observed. The Lewis acidic–basic properties of triphosphinoboranes during the reaction of (tBu₂P)₂BPiPr₂ with H₃B·SMe₂ were analyzed. The P–B bond-containing compound mentioned above not only formed an adduct with BH₃ but also activated the B–H bond of the borane molecule, resulting in the incorporation of the BH₂ unit into two phosphorus atoms and migration of a hydride to the boron atom of the parent triphosphinoborane. The structures of the triphosphinoboranes were confirmed by single-crystal X-ray analysis, multinuclear nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and elemental analysis.

The synthesis and structural analysis of the first fully characterized monomeric triphosphinoboranes are presented.

Synthesis and structure of a phosphinoboronic ester in a fused bicyclic framework

The first phosphinoboronic ester bearing a fused bicyclic framework was synthesised by either deprotonation and hydride abstraction or Rh-catalysed dehydrogenation of a hydrophosphineboronic ester. The phosphinoboronic ester reacted as a Lewis acid with KF/18-crown-6, pyridine and DMAP to give the corresponding adducts. Furthermore, its crystal structure shows a remarkably short P-B bond in comparison with other P-B bonded derivatives in spite of the trigonal pyramidal geometry of the phosphorus. Consistent with the phosphorus pyramidality, the π-type donor-acceptor interaction of the P-B bond is small as revealed by the DFT calculations. The P-B bond shared within the fused six-membered rings has to shorten because of the geometrical requirement and high s-character of the boron.

First-Row d-Block Element-Catalyzed Carbon-Boron Bond Formation and Related Processes

Organoboron reagents represent a unique class of compounds because of their utility in modern synthetic organic chemistry, often affording unprecedented reactivity. The transformation of the carbon-boron bond into a carbon-X (X = C, N, and O) bond in a stereocontrolled fashion has become invaluable in medicinal chemistry, agrochemistry, and natural products chemistry as well as materials science. Over the past decade, first-row d-block transition metals have become increasingly widely used as catalysts for the formation of a carbon-boron bond, a transformation traditionally catalyzed by expensive precious metals. This recent focus on alternative transition metals has enabled growth in fundamental methods in organoboron chemistry. This review surveys the current state-of-the-art in the use of first-row d-block element-based catalysts for the formation of carbon-boron bonds.

Diphosphinoboranes as Intramolecular Frustrated Lewis Pairs: P-B-P Bond Systems for the Activation of Dihydrogen, Carbon Dioxide, and Phenyl Isocyanate

Herein, we present the first example of the activation of small molecules by P-B-P bond systems. The reactivity study involves reactions of two selected diphosphinoboranes, (t-Bu2P)2BPh (1') and (Cy2P)2BNiPr2 (2), that differ in terms of their structural and electronic properties for the activation of dihydrogen, carbon dioxide, and phenyl isocyanate. Diphosphinoborane 1' activates H2 under very mild conditions in the absence of a catalyst with the formation of the dimer (t-Bu2PB(Ph)H)2 and t-Bu2PH. Conversely, diphosphinoborane 2 did not react with H2 under the same conditions. The reaction of 1' with CO2 led to the formation of a compound with an unusual structure, where two phosphinoformate units were coordinated to the PhBOBPh moiety. In addition, 2 reacted with CO2 to insert two CO2 molecules into the P-B bonds of the parent diphosphinoborane. Both diphosphinoboranes activated PhNCO, yielding products resulting from the addition of two and/or three PhNCO molecules and the formation of new P-C, B-O, B-N, and C-N bonds. The products of the activation of small molecules by diphosphinoboranes were characterized with nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and infrared (IR) spectroscopy, single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and elemental analysis. Additionally, the reaction mechanisms of the activation of small molecules by diphosphinoboranes were elucidated by theoretical methods.

Cationic Boron Formazanate Dyes*

Incorporation of cationic boron atoms into molecular frameworks is an established strategy for creating chemical species with unusual bonding and reactivity but is rarely thought of as a way of enhancing molecular optoelectronic properties. Using boron formazanate dyes as examples, we demonstrate that the wavelengths, intensities, and type of the first electronic transitions in BN heterocycles can be modulated by varying the charge, coordination number, and supporting ligands at the cationic boron atom. UV-vis absorption spectroscopy measurements and density-functional (DFT) calculations show that these modulations are caused by changes in the geometry and extent of π-conjugation of the boron formazanate ring. These findings suggest a new strategy for designing optoelectronic materials based on π-conjugated heterocycles containing boron and other main-group elements.

Organophosphorus-catalyzed relay oxidation of H-Bpin: electrophilic C-H borylation of heteroarenes

A nontrigonal phosphorus triamide (1, P{N[o-NMe-C₆H₄]₂}) is shown to catalyze C–H borylation of electron-rich heteroarenes with pinacolborane (HBpin) in the presence of a mild chloroalkane reagent. C–H borylation proceeds for a range of electron-rich heterocycles including pyrroles, indoles, and thiophenes of varied substitution. Mechanistic studies implicate an initial P–N cooperative activation of HBpin by 1 to give P-hydrido diazaphospholene 2, which is diverted by Atherton–Todd oxidation with chloroalkane to generate P-chloro diazaphospholene 3. DFT calculations suggest subsequent oxidation of pinacolborane by 3 generates chloropinacolborane (ClBpin) as a transient electrophilic borylating species, consistent with observed substituent effects and regiochemical outcomes. These results illustrate the targeted diversion of established reaction pathways in organophosphorus catalysis to enable a new mode of main group-catalyzed C–H borylation.

Effects of π-conjugation on the solid-state photoresponsive coloring behavior of bipyridine-boronium complexes

Solid-state photoinduced coloring of boronium complexes consisting of 9-borabicyclononane and 2,2'-bipyridine with π-conjugated substituents at the 4,4'- or 5,5'-positions was investigated. The substitution position affected the highest occupied molecular orbital distribution and determined the coloring capability. The 4,4'-substituted complexes exhibited coloration upon irradiation, whereas most of the 5,5'-substituted complexes did not.

Boronic, diboronic and boric acid esters of 1,8-naphthalenediol - synthesis, structure and formation of boronium salts

The 1,8-naphthalenediolate [1,8-O2C10H8] supported boronic and boric acid esters of general formula X-B(1,8-O2C10H8), where X = C6H5 (1a), C6F5 (2a), 3,4,5-F3-C6H2 (3a), 2,4,6-F3-C6H2 (4a), 2,6-F2-C6H3 (5a), 2,6-Cl2-C6H3 (6a), 2,4,6-Me3-C6H2 (7a), 2,6-(MeO)3-C6H3 (8a), Bun (9a), MeO (10a), OH (11a) and Cl (13a), were synthesized, NMR spectroscopically characterized, and the solid-state structures of 1a-5a, 8a and 10a determined by X-ray crystallography. The acceptor numbers of 1a-7a and 13a were determined and found to be similar to their catecholate analogues, R-Bcat, indicating similar Lewis acidities of these two classes of boronic acid esters. The reaction of B2(NMe2)4 with 1,8-naphthalenediol, followed by addition of HCl furnished the diboronic acid ester B2(1,8-O2C10H8)4 (16a) in ca. 70% yield. Cl-B(1,8-O2C10H8) (13a) was shown to react with O[double bond, length as m-dash]PEt3, DMAP, 1,10-phenanthroline and 2,2'-bipyridine, resp., to give the boronium salts [(Et3P[double bond, length as m-dash]O)2B(1,8-O2C10H8)]Cl (18a), [(DMAP)2B(1,8-O2C10H8)]Cl (22a), [(2,2'-bipyridine)B(1,8-O2C10H8)]Cl (23a) and [(1,10-phenanthroline)B(1,8-O2C10H8)]Cl (24a), which were characterized by NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography.

A reagent for heteroatom borylation, including iron mediated reductive deoxygenation of nitrate yielding a dinitrosyl complex

4,4'-Bipyridyl is shown to be a catalyst for transfer of pinacolboryl groups from (Bpin)₂ to nitrogen heterocycles and to Me₃SiN₃. Using stoichiometric (Bpin)₂(pyrazine) or (Bpin)₂(bipyridine) in an analogous manner, an aromatic nitro group is deoxygenated and subsequently borylated, and four-fold deoxygenation of (DIM)Fe(NO₃)₂(MeCN) to yield the dinitrosyl complex (DIM)Fe(NO)₂ is facile. The co-product O(Bpin)₂ is the quantitative fate of the removed oxo groups. With borylation of both nitrogen heterocycles and doubly deoxygenating two nitrates coordinated to a single metal center, broad spectrum methodology is demonstrated.

The phosphinoboration of acyl chlorides

This investigation examines the reactivity of phosphinoboronate esters Ph₂PBpin (pin = 1,2-O₂C₂Me₄) and Ph₂PBcat (cat = 1,2-O₂C₆H₄), as well as other phosphinoboron species, with various aryl and aliphatic acyl chlorides.

Double Phosphinoboration of CO2 : A Facile Route to Diphospha-Ureas

The reactions of CO2 with a series of phosphinoboranes, including R2 PBpin (R=Ph, tBu; pin=pinacol), R2 PBMes2 (R=Ph, tBu; Mes=2,4,6-Me3 -C6 H2 ), and R2 PBcat (R=Ph, tBu, Mes; cat=catechol) are described. Although R2 PBpin and R2 PBMes2 afford products of the form R2 PCO2 Bpin (R=Ph 1, tBu 4) and R2 PCO2 BMes2 (R=Ph 2, tBu 3), respectively, R2 PBcat lead to further reaction affording the diphospha-ureas, (R2 P)2 CO (R=Ph 5, tBu 6, Mes 7), together with O(Bcat)2 . Computational studies provide insight into the mechanism, revealing an intermediate derived from double phosphinoboration of CO2 .

Diaminophosphinoboranes: effective reagents for phosphinoboration of CO2

The monomeric diaminophosphinoboranes readily react with CO₂ under mild conditions to cleanly form products of the general formula in the absence of a catalyst. The isolated products from the CO₂-phosphinoboration were fully characterized by NMR spectroscopy, IR spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction. The mechanism of CO₂ phosphinoboration with diaminophosphinoboranes was elucidated by DFT calculations.

We present the activation of CO₂ by aminophosphinoboranes along with the mechanism of CO₂ phosphinoboration.

1,1-Phosphinoboration of diazomethanes

The reactions of the phosphinoboranes Ph₂PBMes₂, Ph₂PBpin, and Ph₂PBcat with the diazomethanes Ph₂CN₂, C₁₂H₈CN₂, and EtO₂CCHN₂ are shown to give products of 1,1-phosphinoboration.

Cationic Complexes of Boron and Aluminum: An Early 21st Century Viewpoint

Boron and aluminum are lighter Group 13 elements, found in daily life commodities, and considered environmentally benign. Nevertheless, they markedly differ in their elemental properties (e.g., metal character, atomic radius). The use of Lewis acidic complexes of boron and aluminum for methods of bond activation and catalysis (e.g., hydrogenation of unsaturated substrates, polymerization of olefins and epoxides) is quickly expanding. The introduction of cationic charge may boost the metalloid-centered Lewis acidity and allow for its fine-tuning particularly with regard to preference for "hard" or "soft" Lewis bases (i.e., substrates). Especially the isolation of low-coordinate cations (number of ligand atoms smaller than four) demands elaborate techniques of thermodynamic and kinetic stabilization (i.e., electronic saturation and steric shielding) by a ligand system. Furthermore, the properties of the solvent and the counteranion must be considered with care. Here, selected examples of boron and aluminum cations are described.
