Accessing Low-Valent Inorganic Cations by Using an Extremely Bulky N-Heterocyclic Carbene

Tetryliumylidene ions in synthesis and catalysis

Tetryliumylidene ions ([R-E:]+), recognised for their intriguing electronic properties, have attracted considerable interest. These positively charged species, with two vacant p-orbitals and a lone pair at the E(ii) centre (E = Si, Ge, Sn, Pb), can be viewed as the combination of tetrylenes (R2E:) and tetrylium ions ([R3E]+), which makes them potent Lewis ambiphiles. Such electronic features highlight the potential of tetryliumylidenes for single-site small molecule activation and transition metal-free catalysis. The effective utilisation of the electrophilicity and nucleophilicity of tetryliumylidenes is expected to stem from appropriate ligand choice. For most of the isolated tetryliumylidenes, electron donor- and/or kinetic stabilisation is necessary. This minireview highlights the developments in tetryliumylidene syntheses and the progress of research towards their reactivity and applications in catalytic reactions.

Synthesis, Structural Characterization, and Phosphorescence Properties of Trigonal Zn(II) Carbene Complexes

The sterically demanding N-heterocyclic carbene ITr (N,N'-bis(triphenylmethyl)imidazolylidene) was employed for the preparation of novel trigonal zinc(II) complexes of the type [ZnX2(ITr)] [X = Cl (1), Br (2), and I (3)], for which the low coordination mode was confirmed in both solution and solid state. Because of the atypical coordination geometry, the reactivity of 1-3 was studied in detail using partial or exhaustive halide exchange and halide abstraction reactions to access [ZnLCl(ITr)] [L = carbazolate (4), 3,6-di-tert-butyl-carbazolate (5), phenoxazine (6), and phenothiazine (7)], [Zn(bdt)(ITr)] (bdt = benzene-1,2-dithiolate) (8), and cationic [Zn(μ2-X)(ITr)]2[B(C6F5)4]2 [X = Cl (9), Br (10), and I (11)], all of which were isolated and structurally characterized. Importantly, for all complexes 4-11, the trigonal coordination environment of the ZnII ion is maintained, demonstrating a highly stabilizing effect due to the steric demand of the ITr ligand, which protects the metal center from further ligand association. In addition, complexes 1-3 and 8-11 show long-lived luminescence from triplet excited states in the solid state at room temperature, according to our photophysical studies. Our quantum chemical density functional theory/multireference configuration interaction (DFT/MRCI) calculations reveal that the phosphorescence of 8 originates from a locally excited triplet state on the bdt ligand. They further suggest that the phenyl substituents of ITr are photochemically not innocent but can coordinate to the electron-deficient metal center of this trigonal complex in the excited state.

Coordination and Stabilization of a Lithium Ion with a Silylene

Herein, we report the stabilization of lithium-ion as the source of lithium to use as a trans-metalation reagent [{PhC(N^t Bu)₂ Si(^t Bu)Li}₂ I(^t BuN)₂ CPh] (1). The reaction of 3 equivalents of the LSi^t Bu (L=PhC(N^t Bu)₂ ) and lithium iodide at low temperature leads to a silylene stabilized lithium-ion with an additional coordination of amidinate ligand. Compound 1 shows two four membered and one six membered ring as confirmed by QTAIM calculations. Whereas the reaction of the LSiCl with 1.5 equivalents of carbodiimide (CyN)₂ C at room temperature affords compound [PhC(N^t Bu)₂ Si(Cl)(NCy)₂ NCy] (2) with the CN₂ SiN₂ C skeleton containing silicon as a central atom. Both the compounds were fully characterized by NMR, mass spectrometry, X-ray crystallographic analysis, and quantum mechanical calculations.

Thallium(I) Tropolonates: Synthesis, Structure, Spectral Characteristics, and Antimicrobial Activity Compared to Lead(II) and Bismuth(III) Analogues

Synthesis, single-crystal X-ray determination diffraction and FT-IR, NMR (¹H, ¹³C, ¹⁹F and ²⁰⁵Tl), UV–vis, and luminescence spectra characteristics were described for series of thallium(I) compounds: thallium(I) triflate (Tl(OTf)), 1:1 co-crystals of thallium(I) triflate and tropolone (Htrop), Tl(OTf)·Htrop, as well as simple thallium(I) chelates: Tl(trop) (1), Tl(5-metrop) (2), Tl(hino) (3), with Htrop, 5-methyltropolone (5-meHtrop), 4-isopropyltropolone (hinokitiol, Hhino), respectively, and additionally more complex {Tl@[Tl(hino)]₆}(OTf) (4) compound. Comparison of their antimicrobial activity with selected lead(II) and bismuth(III) analogs and free ligands showed that only bismuth(III) complexes demonstrated significant antimicrobial activity, from two- to fivefold larger than the free ligands.

Linear Carbene Pyridine Copper Complexes with Sterically Demanding N,N'-Bis(trityl)imidazolylidene: Syntheses, Molecular Structures, and Photophysical Properties

The sterically demanding carbene ITr (N,N'-bis(triphenylmethyl)imidazolylidene) was used as a ligand for the preparation of luminescent copper(I) complexes of the type [(ITr)Cu(R-pyridine/R'-quinoline)]BF₄ (R = H, 4-CN, 4-CHO, 2,6-NH₂, and R' = 8-Cl, 6-Me). The selective formation of linear, bis(coordinated) complexes was observed for a series of pyridine and quinoline derivatives. Only in the case of 4-cyanopyridine a one-dimensional coordination polymer was formed, in which the cyano group of the cyanopyridine ligand additionally binds to another Cu atom in a bridging manner, thus leading to a trigonal planar coordination environment. In contrast, employing sterically less demanding monotrityl-substituted carbene 3, no (NHC)Cu-pyridine complexes could be prepared. Instead, a bis-carbene complex [(3)₂Cu]PF₆ was obtained which showed no luminescence. All linear pyridine/quinoline coordinated complexes show weak emission in solution but intense blue to orange luminescence doped with 10% in PMMA films and in the solid state either from triplet excited states with unusually long lifetimes of up to 4.8 ms or via TADF with high radiative rate constants of up to 1.7 × 10⁵ s^-1 at room temperature. Combined density functional theory and multireference configuration interaction calculations have been performed to rationalize the involved photophysics of these complexes. They reveal a high density of low-lying electronic states with mixed MLCT, LLCT, and LC character where the electronic structures of the absorbing and emitting state are not necessarily identical.

On the edge of the steric repulsion and reactivity of bulky anilines; a case study of chloro(imino)phosphine synthesis

2-Benzhydryl-4-methyl-6-(1,1'-diphenyl-2-phenyl-ethyl)aniline was prepared by a three-step process. 2,6-Bis(benzhydryl)-4-methyl-aniline was protected by Schiff coupling, then benzylated and finally dealkylated by using hydrochloric acid and methanol. The resulting compound exhibits one of the highest buried volumes around the nitrogen atom of anilines prepared so far, but it reacts with phosphorus trichloride and triethylamine to give a monomeric chloro(imino)phosphine.

Synthesis of Cationic Silaamidinate Germylenes and Stannylenes and the Catalytic Application for Hydroboration of Pyridines

The N-heterocyclic germylenes and stannylenes LSi(NAr)₂EX (L = PhC(NtBu)₂, Ar = 2,6-iPr₂C₆H₃; E = Ge, Sn; X = Cl, CF₃SO₃, BPh₄) supported by the bulky silaamidinate ligand [LSi(NAr)₂]^- have been synthesized and fully characterized. The germylene triflate LSi(NAr)₂GeOTf (3b) and dimeric borate [LSi(NAr)₂Ge]₂ClBPh₄ (3a) enabled highly regio- and chemoselective catalytic hydroboration of pyridines and may represent the most active catalytic system for the transformation. DFT calculations disclosed that the cationic germylene [LSi(NAr)₂Ge]⁺ with a low-lying LUMO energy initiated the catalytic process. In contrast, the analogous amidinate germylene triflates are almost inactive, indicating the silaamidinate ligand is essential for the stabilization of cationic species.

Complexes of Dichlorogermylene with Phosphine/Sulfoxide-Supported Carbone as Ligand

Due to their remarkable electronic features, recent years have witnessed the emergence of carbones L₂C, which consist in two donating L ligands coordinating a central carbon atom bearing two lone pairs. In this context, the phosphine/sulfoxide-supported carbone 4 exhibits a strong nucleophilic character, and here, we describe its ability to coordinate dichlorogermylene. Two original stable coordination complexes were obtained and fully characterized in solution and in the solid state by NMR spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis, respectively. At 60 °C, in the presence of 4, the Ge(II)-complex 5 undergoes a slow isomerization that transforms the bis-ylide ligand into an yldiide.

Synthesis and characterization of ITr-protected group 11 metal trimethylsilylchalcogenolates

This work describes the synthesis of group 11 metal trimethylsilylchalcogenolate complexes [(ITr)M-ESiMe3] stabilized by the large NHC ligand bis-1,3-tritylimidazole-2-ylidene (ITr). The thiolates and selenolates of Cu, Ag, and Au are accessed from either [(ITr)MOAc] (M = Cu, Ag) and E(SiMe3)2 or [(ITr)AuCl] and Li[ESiMe3] (E = S, Se). All complexes were characterized spectroscopically and, for the copper coordination compounds, via single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis.

Mononuclear Cu Complexes Based on Nitrogen Heterocyclic Carbene: A Comprehensive Review

During the last decade, organometallic, coordination, and catalytic chemistry of the three-dimensional metals such as copper (Cu) has been greatly affected by the emergence of nitrogen heterocyclic carbene (NHC) complexes. The NHCs, and in particular the mononuclear Cu^I-based ones, have been proven vastly useful in several applications such as in biosynthesis, catalysis, photochemistry, etc. This review tries to thoroughly describe a series of mononuclear Cu^I NHC complexes and their subcategories such as heteroleptics, and bidentate and tridentate heteroatom complexes, and give some detailed insights on their development, emergence, and applications. A brief outlook is also disclosed to enable other researchers to further develop a platform for future advances and studies in the field of Cu^I-based NHCs.

Linking Low-Coordinate Ge(II) Centers via Bridging Anionic N-Heterocyclic Olefin Ligands

We introduce a large-scale synthesis of a sterically encumbered N-heterocyclic olefin (NHO) and illustrate the ability of its deprotonated form to act as an anionic four-electron bridging ligand. The resulting multicenter donating ability has been used to link two low oxidation state Ge(II) centers in close proximity, leading to bridging Ge-Cl-Ge and Ge-H-Ge bonding environments supported by Ge₂C₂ heterocyclic manifolds. Reduction of a dimeric [RGeCl]₂ species (R = anionic NHO, [(MeCNDipp)₂C═CH]^-; Dipp = 2,6-ⁱPr₂C₆H₃) did not give the expected acyclic RGeGeR analogue of an alkyne, but rather ligand migration/disproportionation transpired to yield the known diorganogermylene R₂Ge and Ge metal. This process was examined computationally, and the ability of the reported anionic NHO to undergo atom migration chemistry contrasts with what is typically found with bulky monoanionic ligands (such as terphenyl ligands).

Normal to abnormal ItBu·AlH3 isomerization in solution and in the solid state

The first example of solid state normal to abnormal NHC complex isomerization is reported.

N-Heterocyclic Carbene Complexes of Copper, Nickel, and Cobalt

The emergence of N-heterocyclic carbenes as ligands across the Periodic Table had an impact on various aspects of the coordination, organometallic, and catalytic chemistry of the 3d metals, including Cu, Ni, and Co, both from the fundamental viewpoint but also in applications, including catalysis, photophysics, bioorganometallic chemistry, materials, etc. In this review, the emergence, development, and state of the art in these three areas are described in detail.

Ge(ii) cation catalyzed hydroboration of aldehydes and ketones

The catalytic utility of a germylene cation 4 is reported. In the presence of compound 4, a variety of aldehydes and ketones can be hydroborylated using HBpin.

NHCs in Main Group Chemistry

Since the discovery of the first stable N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) in the beginning of the 1990s, these divalent carbon species have become a common and available class of compounds, which have found numerous applications in academic and industrial research. Their important role as two-electron donor ligands, especially in transition metal chemistry and catalysis, is difficult to overestimate. In the past decade, there has been tremendous research attention given to the chemistry of low-coordinate main group element compounds. Significant progress has been achieved in stabilization and isolation of such species as Lewis acid/base adducts with highly tunable NHC ligands. This has allowed investigation of numerous novel types of compounds with unique electronic structures and opened new opportunities in the rational design of novel organic catalysts and materials. This Review gives a general overview of this research, basic synthetic approaches, key features of NHC-main group element adducts, and might be useful for the broad research community.

New synthetic strategies leading to [RNPNR]- anions and the isolation of the [P(Nt-Bu)3]3- trianion

New and straightforward synthetic paths for the syntheses of [RNPNR]- anions (R = t-Bu (1) or CPh3 (6)) in the form of their tmeda- or thf-coordinated lithium salts are described. The attempts to isolate the sodium analogue [(Ph3CNPNCPh3)Na·(thf)x] (8) remained unsuccessful probably due to its high reactivity although its formation in the reaction of the parent cis-[(Ph3CNP)2(Ph3CNH)2] (5) with 2 eq. of sodium naphthalenide was corroborated by NMR spectroscopy. Importantly, when an excess of sodium naphthalenide was used in the reaction with 5, [(Ph3C)Na(thf)3] (9) was obtained along with a complex mixture of other by-products indicating the cleavage of the C-N bond in the starting material. Furthermore, the synthesis and the structural characterization of the [P(Nt-Bu)3]3- trianion as its trilithium salt [P(Nt-Bu)3Li3]2 (10) has been successfully achieved.

Approaching monocoordination at a silver(i) cation

A series of highly electrophilic [(NHC)Ag]⁺ complexes (NHC = N-heterocyclic carbene) have been prepared which approach the limit of monocoordination for silver(i).
