Hierarchical Nanostructures of Metal-Organic Frameworks Applied in Gas Separating ZIF-8-on-ZIF-67 Membranes

In situ electrochemical potential-induced synthesis of metal organic framework membrane on polymer support for H2/CO2 separation

Metal-Organic Framework (MOF) membranes act as selective layers have offered unprecedented opportunities for energy-efficient and cost-effective gas separation. Searching for the green and sustainable synthesis method of dense MOF membrane has received huge attention in both academia and industry. In this work, we demonstrate an in situ electrochemical potential-induced synthesis strategy to aqueously fabricate Metal Azolate Framework-4 (MAF-4) membranes on polypropylene (PP) support. The constant potential can induce the heterogeneous nucleation and growth of MAF-4, resulting an ultrathin membrane with the thickness of only 390 nm. This high-quality membrane exhibits a high H2/CO2 separation performance with the H2 permeance as high as 1565.75 GPU and selectivity of 11.6. The deployment of this environment friendly one-step fabrication method under mild reaction conditions, such as low-cost polymer substrate, water instead of organic solvent, room temperature and ambient pressure shows great promise for the scale-up of MOF membranes.

Highly Transparent, Yet Photoluminescent: 2D CdSe/CdS Nanoplatelet-Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework Composites Sensitive to Gas Adsorption

In this work, thin composite films of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) and colloidal two-dimensional (2D) core-crown CdSe/CdS nanoplatelet (NPL) emitters with minimal scattering are formed by a cycled growth method and yield highly transparent coatings with strong and narrow photoluminescence of the NPLs at 546 nm (FWHM: 25 nm) in a solid-state composite structure. The porous ZIF matrix acts as functional encapsulation for the emitters and enables the adsorption of the guest molecules water and ethanol. The adsorption and desorption of the guest molecules is then characterized by a reversable photoluminescence change of the embedded NPLs. The transmittance of the composite films exceeds the values of uncoated glass at visible wavelengths where the NPL emitters show no absorption (>540 nm) and renders them anti-reflective coatings. At NPL absorption wavelengths (440-540 nm), the transmittance of the thin composite film-coated glass lies close to the transmittance of uncoated glass. The fast formation of innovative, smooth NPL/ZIF composite films without pre-polymerizing the colloidal 2D nanostructures first provides a powerful tool toward application-oriented photoluminescence-based gas sensing.

Hierarchical Nanobiosensors at the End of the SARS-CoV-2 Pandemic

Nanostructures have played a key role in the development of different techniques to attack severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Some applications include masks, vaccines, and biosensors. The latter are of great interest for detecting diseases since some of their features allowed us to find specific markers in secretion samples such as saliva, blood, and even tears. Herein, we highlight how hierarchical nanoparticles integrated into two or more low-dimensional materials present outstanding advantages that are attractive for photonic biosensing using their nanoscale functions. The potential of nanohybrids with their superlative mechanical characteristics together with their optical and optoelectronic properties is discussed. The progress in the scientific research focused on using nanoparticles for biosensing a variety of viruses has become a medical milestone in recent years, and has laid the groundwork for future disease treatments. This perspective analyzes the crucial information about the use of hierarchical nanostructures in biosensing for the prevention, treatment, and mitigation of SARS-CoV-2 effects.

Leveraging metal node-linker self-assembly to access functional anisotropy of zirconium-based MOF-on-MOF epitaxial heterostructure thin films

Chemically robust, functional porous materials are imperative for designing novel membranes for chemical separation and heterogeneous catalysts. Among the array of potential materials, zirconium (Zr)-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have garnered considerable attention, and have been investigated for applications related to gas separation and storage, and catalysis. However, a significant challenge with Zr-MOFs lies in their processibility, particularly in achieving homogenous thin films and controlling functional anisotropy. The recent developments in MOF thin film fabrication methodologies do not yield a solution to achieve mild reaction condition growth of Zr-MOF thin films with epitaxial MOF-on-MOF geometry (i.e. functional anisotropy). In the current work, we have devised a straightforward methodology under room temperature conditions, which enables epitaxial, oriented MOF-on-MOF thin film growth. This achievement is accomplished through a stepwise self-assembly approach involving Zr nodes and linkers on a functionalized substrate. This de novo developed strategy of functionality design is demonstrated for UiO-66 (University of Oslo) type Zr-MOFs. We have demonstrated the precise placement of chemical functionalities within the thin film structure, allowing for controlled chemical diffusion and regulation of diffusion selectivity.

Fine-Tuning of the Pore Aperture and Framework Flexibility of Mixed-Metal (Zn/Co) Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-8: An In Situ Positron Annihilation Lifetime Spectroscopy Study under CO2 Gas Pressure

The mixed-metal (Zn/Co) strategy has been used to enhance the gas separation selectivity of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8)-based membranes. The enhancement in selectivity has been attributed to possible modifications in the grain boundary structure, pore architecture, and flexibility of the frameworks. In the present study, we used in situ positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) under varying CO2 pressure to investigate the tuning of the pore architecture and framework flexibility of mixed-metal (Zn/Co) ZIF-8 frameworks with varying Co contents. The random distribution of Zn and Co metal nodes within the highly crystalline frameworks having an SOD topology was established using electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. The inherent aperture as well as cavity size of the frameworks, and the pore interconnectivity to the outer surface, were observed to vary with the Co content in ZIF-8 due to the random distribution of Zn and Co metal nodes in the frameworks. The aperture size is reduced with the incorporation of an additional metal (Zn or Co) in ZIF-67 or ZIF-8, respectively. The aperture size remains the smallest for a lower Co content (∼0.20) in ZIF-8. The framework flexibility determined by in situ PALS measurements under CO2 pressure continuously reduces with increasing Co content in ZIF-8. A smaller aperture size as well as low flexibility of ZIF-8 with a low Co content is seen to be directly correlated to a higher separation selectivity of membranes prepared with this mixed-metal composition.

Review of Synthesis and Separation Application of Metal-Organic Framework-Based Mixed-Matrix Membranes

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are porous crystalline materials assembled from organic ligands and metallic secondary building blocks. Their special structural composition gives them the advantages of high porosity, high specific surface area, adjustable pore size, and good stability. MOF membranes and MOF-based mixed-matrix membranes prepared from MOF crystals have ultra-high porosity, uniform pore size, excellent adsorption properties, high selectivity, and high throughput, which contribute to their being widely used in separation fields. This review summarizes the synthesis methods of MOF membranes, including in situ growth, secondary growth, and electrochemical methods. Mixed-matrix membranes composed of Zeolite Imidazolate Frameworks (ZIF), University of Oslo (UIO), and Materials of Institute Lavoisier (MIL) frameworks are introduced. In addition, the main applications of MOF membranes in lithium-sulfur battery separators, wastewater purification, seawater desalination, and gas separation are reviewed. Finally, we review the development prospects of MOF membranes for the large-scale application of MOF membranes in factories.

Fast Dynamic Synthesis of MIL-68(In) Thin Films in High Optical Quality for Optical Cavity Sensing

Fabrication of metal-organic framework (MOF) thin films rigidly anchored on suitable substrates is a crucial prerequisite for the integration of these porous hybrid materials into electronic and optical devices. Thus, far, the structural variety for MOF thin films available through layer-by-layer deposition was limited, as the preparation of those surface-anchored metal-organic frameworks (SURMOFs) has several requirements: mild conditions, low temperatures, day-long reaction times, and nonaggressive solvents. We herein present a fast method for the preparation of the MIL SURMOF on Au-surfaces under rather harsh conditions: Using a dynamic layer-by-layer synthesis for MIL-68(In), thin films of adjustable thickness between 50 and 2000 nm could be deposited within only 60 min. The MIL-68(In) thin film growth was monitored in situ using a quartz crystal microbalance. In-plane X-ray diffraction revealed oriented MIL-68(In) growth with the pore-channels of this interesting MOF aligned parallel to the support. Scanning electron microscopy data demonstrated an extraordinarily low roughness of the MIL-68(In) thin films. Mechanical properties and lateral homogeneity of the layer were probed through nanoindentation. These thin films showed extremely high optical quality. By applying a poly(methyl methacrylate) layer and further depositing an Au-mirror to the top, a MOF optical cavity was fabricated that can be used as a Fabry-Perot interferometer. The MIL-68(In)-based cavity showed a series of sharp resonances in the ultraviolet-visible regime. Changes in the refractive index of MIL-68(In) caused by exposure to volatile compounds led to pronounced position shifts of the resonances. Thus, these cavities are well suited to be used as optical read-out sensors.

Hetero-Polycrystalline Membranes with Narrow and Rigid Pores for Molecular Sieving

Molecular sieving membranes have great potential for energy-saving separations, but they suffer from permeability-selectivity trade-off limitation. In this report, simultaneous hetero-crystallization and hetero-linker coordination of metal-organic framework (MOF) hollow fiber membranes through one-pot synthesis for precise gas separation is reported. It is found that the hetero-polycrystalline membranes consist of 2D and 3D MOF phases and are defect-free and roughly orientated, hetero-linker exchange of 3D phase by larger geometric ones can narrow transport pathway, and framework rigidification occurs and thus fixes MOF channels. The prepared membranes are robust and reproducible, and exhibit substantially improved performance, with H₂ /CO₂ , H₂ /N₂ , and H₂ /CH₄ selectivities up to 361, 482, and 541, respectively, accompanied by high H₂ permeance over 1100 gas permeation units, which can easily outclass trade-off upper bounds of state-of-the-art membranes.

Metal-organic frameworks and covalent organic frameworks as disruptive membrane materials for energy-efficient gas separation

In this Review we survey the molecular sieving behaviour of metal-organic framework (MOF) and covalent organic framework (COF) membranes, which is different from that of classical zeolite membranes. The nature of MOFs as inorganic-organic hybrid materials and COFs as purely organic materials is powerful and disruptive for the field of gas separation membranes. The possibility of growing neat MOFs and COFs on membrane supports, while also allowing successful blending into polymer-filler composites, has a huge advantage over classical zeolite molecular sieves. MOFs and COFs allow synthetic access to more than 100,000 different structures and tailor-made molecular gates. Additionally, soft evacuation below 100 °C is often enough to achieve pore activation. Therefore, a huge number of synthetic methods for supported MOF and COF membrane thin films, such as solvothermal synthesis, seed-mediated growth and counterdiffusion, exist. Among them, methods with high scale-up potential, for example, layer-by-layer dip- and spray-coating, chemical and physical vapour deposition, and electrochemical methods. Additionally, physical methods have been developed that involve external stimuli, such as electric fields and light. A particularly important point is their ability to react to stimuli, which has allowed the 'drawbacks' of the non-ideality of the molecular sieving properties to be exploited in a completely novel research direction. Controllable gas transport through membrane films is a next-level property of MOFs and COFs, leading towards adaptive process deviation. MOF and COF particles are highly compatible with polymers, which allows for mixed-matrix membranes. However, these membranes are not simple MOF-polymer blends, as they require improved polymer-filler interactions, such as cross-linking or surface functionalization.

Photoinduced Delamination of Metal-Organic Framework Thin Films by Spatioselective Generation of Reactive Oxygen Species

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) built from different building units offer functionalities going far beyond gas storage and separation. In connection with advanced applications, e.g., in optoelectronics, hierarchical MOF-on-MOF structures fabricated using sophisticated methodologies have recently become particularly attractive. Here, we demonstrate that the structural complexity of MOF-based architectures can be further increased by employing highly spatioselective photochemistry. Using a layer-by-layer, quasi-epitaxial synthesis method, we realized a photoactive MOF-on-MOF hetero-bilayer consisting of a porphyrinic bottom layer and a tetraphenylethylene (TPE)-based top layer. Illumination of the monolithic thin film with visible light in the presence of oxygen gas results in the generation of reactive oxygen species (¹O₂) in the porphyrinic bottom layer, which lead to a photocleavage of the TPE units at the internal interface. We demonstrate that this spatioselective photochemistry can be utilized to delaminate the top layers, yielding two-dimensional (2D) MOF sheets with well-defined thickness. Experiments using atomic force microscopy (AFM) demonstrate that these platelets can be transferred onto other substrates, thus opening up the possibility of fabricating planar MOF structures using photolithography.

Rational Design and Growth of MOF-on-MOF Heterostructures

Multiporous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as a subclass of highly crystalline inorganic-organic materials, which are endowed with high surface areas, tunable pores, and fascinating nanostructures. Heterostructured MOF-on-MOF composites are recently becoming a research hotspot in the field of chemistry and materials science, which focus on the assembly of two or more different homogeneous or heterogeneous MOFs with various structures and morphologies. Compared with one single MOF, the dual MOF-on-MOF composites exhibit unprecedented tunability, hierarchical nanostructure, synergistic effect, and enhanced performance. Due to the difference of inorganic metals and organic ligands, the lattice parameters in a, b, and c directions in the single crystal cells could bring about subtle or large structural difference. It will result in the composite material with distinct growth methods to obtain secondary MOF grown from the initial MOF. In this review, the authors wish to mainly outline the latest synthetic strategies of heterostructured MOF-on-MOFs and their derivatives, including ordered epitaxial growth, random epitaxial growth, etc., which show the tutorial guidelines for the further development of various MOF-on-MOFs.

Mixed Dimensional Nanostructure (UiO-66-Decorated MWCNT) as a Nanofiller in Mixed-Matrix Membranes for Enhanced CO2 /CH4 Separation

Mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs) with combination of two distinct dimensional nanofillers (such as 1D-3D, 2D-3D, or 3D-3D, etc.) have drawn special attention for gas separation applications due to their concerted effects on gas permeation and mechanical properties. An amine-functionalized 1D multiwalled carbon nanotube (NH₂ -MWCNT) with exceptional mechanical strength and rapid gas transport was crosslinked with an amine-functionalized 3D metal-organic framework (UiO-66-NH₂ ) with high CO₂ affinity in a Schiff base reaction. The resultant crosslinked mixed-dimensional nanostructure was used as a nanofiller in a polysulfone (PSf) polymer matrix to explore the underlying synergy between 1D and 3D nanostructures on the gas separation performance of MMMs. Cross-sectional scanning electron microscopy and mapping revealed the homogenous dispersion of UiO-66@MWCNT in the polymer matrix. The MMM containing 5.0 wt. % UiO-66@MWCNT demonstrated a superior permeability 8.3 Barrer as compared to the 4.2 Barrer of pure PSf membrane for CO₂ . Moreover, the selectivity (CO₂ /CH₄ ) of this MMM was enhanced to 39.5 from the 28.0 observed for pure PSf under similar conditions of pressure and temperature.

Current Trends in Metal-Organic and Covalent Organic Framework Membrane Materials

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have been thoroughly investigated with regards to applications in gas separation membranes in the past years. More recently, new preparation methods for MOFs and COFs as particles and thin-film membranes, as well as for mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs) have been developed. We will highlight novel processes and highly functional materials: Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) can be transformed into glasses and we will give an insight into their use for membranes. In addition, liquids with permanent porosity offer solution processability for the manufacture of extremely potent MMMs. Also, MOF materials influenced by external stimuli give new directions for the enhancement of performance by in situ techniques. Presently, COFs with their large pores are useful in quantum sieving applications, and by exploiting the stacking behavior also molecular sieving COF membranes are possible. Similarly, porous polymers can be constructed using MOF templates, which then find use in gas separation membranes.

Exploring the Potential Application of Matrimid® and ZIFs-Based Membranes for Hydrogen Recovery: A Review

Hydrogen recovery is at the center of the energy transition guidelines promoted by governments, owing to its applicability as an energy resource, but calls for energetically nonintensive recovery methods. The employment of polymeric membranes in selective gas separations has arisen as a potential alternative, as its established commercial availability demonstrates. However, enhanced features need to be developed to achieve adequate mechanical properties and the membrane performance that allows the obtention of hydrogen with the required industrial purity. Matrimid^®, as a polyimide, is an attractive material providing relatively good performance to selectively recover hydrogen. As a consequence, this review aims to study and summarize the main results, mechanisms involved and advances in the use of Matrimid^® as a selective material for hydrogen separation to date, delving into membrane fabrication procedures that increase the effectiveness of hydrogen recovery, i.e., the addition of fillers (within which ZIFs have acquired extraordinary importance), chemical crosslinking or polymeric blending, among others.

Solid-Phase Extraction of Aristolochic Acid I from Natural Plant Using Dual Ionic Liquid-Immobilized ZIF-67 as Sorbent

(1) Background: ZIF-67 is one of the most intriguing metal–organic frameworks already applied in liquid adsorption. To increase its adsorption performance, dual ionic liquids were immobilized on ZIF-67 in this research; (2) Methods: The obtained sorbent was used to adsorb aristolochic acid I (AAI) in standard solutions. Then, the sorbent was applied in solid-phase extraction to remove AAI from Fibraurea Recisa Pierre extracted solution. (3) Results: By analyzing the adsorption models, the highest adsorption capacity of immobilized sorbent (50.9 mg/g) was obtained at 25 °C within 120 min. In the SPE process, 0.02 mg of AAI was removed per gram of herbal plant, the adequate recoveries were in the range of 96.2–100.0%, and RSDs were 3.5–4.0%; (4) Conclusions: The provided experimental data revealed that ZIF-67@EIM-MIM was an excellent potential sorbent to adsorb and remove AAI from herbal plant extract, and the successful separation indicated that this sorbent could be an ideal material for the pretreatment of herbal plants containing AAI.

Emergent Interface in Heterostructured Thin Films of Cu(II) and Cu(I) Coordination Polymers

In this work we report fabrication of high-quality AB- and BA-type heterostructured thin films of cubic Cu(II) (A-type) and tetragonal Cu(I) (B-type) coordination polymers (CPs) on the functionalized Au substrate by the layer-by-layer method. Successful growth of Cu(I)-CP on top of Cu(II)-CP was assigned to be due to the interfacial reduction reaction (IRR). Notably, electrical transport measurements across AB- and BA-type heterostructured thin films revealed rectification of current in opposite directions. We have attributed such an interestingly new observation to the formation of a well-defined interface of Cu(II)-CP and Cu(I)-CP resembling a p-n junction-a hitherto unreported phenomenon that is anticipated to open enormous opportunities for the heterostructured thin films of CPs, likewise celebrated interfaces of oxide heterostructures.

Balancing the Grain Boundary Structure and the Framework Flexibility through Bimetallic Metal-Organic Framework (MOF) Membranes for Gas Separation

Separation is one of the most energy-intensive processes in the chemical industry, and membrane-based separation technology helps to reduce the energy consumption dramatically. Supported metal-organic framework (MOF) layers hold great promise as a molecular sieve membrane, yet only a few MOF membranes showed the expected separation performance. The main reasons include e.g. nonselective grain boundary transport or the flexible MOF framework, especially the inevitable linker rotation. Here, we propose a crystal engineering strategy that balances the grain boundary structure and framework flexibility in Co-Zn bimetallic zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF) membranes and exploit their contributions to the improvement of membrane quality and separation performance. It reveals that a good balance between the two trade-off factors enabled a "sweet spot" that offers the best C₃H₆/C₃H₈ separation factor up to 200.

Carbon Nanomembranes from Aromatic Carboxylate Precursors

Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) serve as convenient platform for fabricating carbon nanomembranes (CNMs) of extended lateral dimensions. Highly porous CNMs are emerging as interesting materials for membrane technologies as they exhibit selectivity for water permeation and, owing to their reduced dimensionality, promise increased energy efficiency compared to established systems. In the present study terphenylcarboxylate SAMs, prepared on silver underpotential deposited on Au and irradiated by 100 eV electrons, were successfully converted into free-standing CNMs. Infrared and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy reveal pronounced chemical changes both of the anchoring carboxylate moiety and the aromatic backbone upon electron irradiation. Permeation studies showed high specificity for water as demonstrated by the separation from tetrahydrofuran. Compared to thiols on gold, the standard CNM precursor system, the carboxylic acid based SAM exhibits equivalent characteristics. This suggests that electron-induced carbonization is insensitive to the particular choice of the anchor moiety and, therefore, the choice of precursor molecules can be extended to the versatile class of aromatic carboxylic acids.

Recent advances in MOF-based photocatalysis: environmental remediation under visible light

Highly photoactive MOFs can be engineered via various strategies for the purpose of extended visible light absorption, more efficient generation, separation and transfer of charge carriers, as well as good recyclability.

Bi-metal-organic frameworks type II heterostructures for enhanced photocatalytic styrene oxidation

Fabricating heterostructures enhances the photocatalytic performance of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) due to their excellent light absorption and high efficient charge transfer capacity. In this study, we designed and implemented three-dimensional dendritic UiO-66-NH2@MIL-101(Fe) (UOML) heterostructures as catalysts for photocatalytic styrene oxidation. The UOML catalysts exhibited a well-matched band gap structure and efficient catalytic interface, leading to a remarkable photoexcited carrier separation and catalytic activity. Our results present a promising insight for synthesizing novel MOFs-based catalysts and their applications.

Metal–Organic Framework Membranes: From Fabrication to Gas Separation

Gas membrane-based separation is considered one of the most effective technologies to address energy efficiency and large footprint challenges. Various classes of advanced materials, including polymers, zeolites, porous carbons, and metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have been investigated as potential suitable candidates for gas membrane-based separations. MOFs possess a uniquely tunable nature in which the pore size and environment can be controlled by connecting metal ions (or metal ion clusters) with organic linkers of various functionalities. This unique characteristic makes them attractive for the fabrication of thin membranes, as both the diffusion and solubility components of permeability can be altered. Numerous studies have been published on the synthesis and applications of MOFs, as well as the fabrication of MOF-based thin films. However, few studies have addressed their gas separation properties for potential applications in membrane-based separation technologies. Here, we present a synopsis of the different types of MOF-based membranes that have been fabricated over the past decade. In this review, we start with a short introduction touching on the gas separation membrane technology. We also shed light on the various techniques developed for the fabrication of MOF as membranes, and the key challenges that still need to be tackled before MOF-based membranes can successfully be used in gas separation and implemented in an industrial setting.
