Helicity Control of Triphenylamine‐Based Supramolecular Polymers: Correlation between Solvent Properties and Helicity in Supramolecular Gels

Achiral Solvent Inversed Helical Pathway and Cosolvent Controlled Excited-State "Majority Rule" in Enantiomeric Dansulfonamide Assemblies

Achiral solvents are commonly utilized to induce the self-assembly of chiral molecules. This study demonstrates that achiral solvents can trigger helicity inversion in the assemblies of dansyl amphiphiles and control the excited-state "majority rule" in assemblies composed of pure enantiomers, through variation of the cosolvent ratio. Specifically, enantiomers of dansyl amphiphiles self-assemble into helical structures with opposite handedness in methanol (MeOH) and acetonitrile (MeCN), together with inversed circular dichroism and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) signals. When a mixture of MeOH and MeCN is employed, the achiral cosolvents collectively affect the CPL of the assemblies in a way similar to that of "mixed enantiomers". The dominant cosolvent governs the CPL signal. As the cosolvent composition shifts from pure MeCN to MeOH, the CPL signals undergo a significant inversion and amplification, with two maxima observed at ≈20% MeOH and 20% MeCN. This study deepens the comprehension of how achiral solvents modulate helical nanostructures and their excited-state chiroptical properties.

Synthesis of Helical-Shaped Axially Chiral Bisoxime Ethers via Chiral Phosphoric-Acid-Catalyzed Sequential Enantioselective Condensations

A successful synthesis of helical-shaped axially chiral bisoxime ethers is reported. This approach utilized symmetric L-shaped diketone scaffolds as carbonyl components for the enantioselective condensation with hydroxylamines, delivering dual axially chiral oxime ethers with up to 99% ee. Additionally, the axially chiral mono-oxime ethers of azabicyclic ketones with high ee's were also successfully produced. Various chiral bicyclic lactams can be readily synthesized via Beckmann rearrangement, demonstrating a potential application in organic synthetic chemistry.

Interplay Between Hydrogen Bonding and Electron Transfer in Mixed Valence Assemblies of Triarylamine Trisamides

Hydrogen-bonding interactions are assumed to play a critical role in the long-range transport of light or charge recently observed in supramolecular assemblies of C₃ -symmetrical discotic molecules. Herein, the structure of mixed valence assemblies formed by irradiating triarylamine trisamide (TATA) molecules was determined by multifarious techniques under various conditions with the aim of probing the interplay between the hydrogen bonding network and the rate of electron transport in different states (solution, gel, film). Irradiation was performed under initial states that vary by the degree of association of TATA monomers through hydrogen bonds. Firstly, a significant shift of the N-H and C=O stretching frequencies was observed by FTIR upon irradiation thus revealing an overlooked signature of TATA⋅+ species and interacting mixed valence aggregates. Secondly, gels and films both mostly consist of hydrogen-bonded TATA polymers but their EPR spectra recorded at 293 K reveal very different behaviors: localized electrons in the gels versus fully delocalized electrons in the films. Hydrogen bonding thus appears as a necessary but not sufficient condition to get fast electron transfer rates and a packing of the TATA monomers particularly suitable for charge transport is assumed to exist in the solid state. Finally, defects in the hydrogen bonding network are detected upon increasing the number of radical species in the mixed valence assemblies present in the film state without impeding the delocalization of the unpaired electrons. A delicate balance between hydrogen bonds and packing is thus necessary to get supramolecular polarons in mixed valence TATA assemblies.

Solute-Solvent Interactions in Modern Physical Organic Chemistry: Supramolecular Polymers as a Muse

Interactions between solvents and solutes are a cornerstone of physical organic chemistry and have been the subject of investigations over the last century. In recent years, a renewed interest in fundamental aspects of solute-solvent interactions has been sparked in the field of supramolecular chemistry in general and that of supramolecular polymers in particular. Although solvent effects in supramolecular chemistry have been recognized for a long time, the unique opportunities that supramolecular polymers offer to gain insight into solute-solvent interactions have become clear relatively recently. The multiple interactions that hold the supramolecular polymeric structure together are similar in strength to those between solute and solvent. The cooperativity found in ordered supramolecular polymers leads to the possibility of amplifying these solute-solvent effects and will shed light on extremely subtle solvation phenomena. As a result, many exciting effects of solute-solvent interactions in modern physical organic chemistry can be studied using supramolecular polymers. Our aim is to put the recent progress into a historical context and provide avenues toward a more comprehensive understanding of solvents in multicomponent supramolecular systems.

Multi-component peptide hydrogels - a systematic study incorporating biomolecules for the exploration of diverse, tuneable biomaterials

Peptide-based supramolecular gels can be designed to be functional "smart" materials that have applications in drug delivery, tissue engineering, and supramolecular chemistry. Although many multi-component gel systems have been designed and reported, many of these applications still rely solely on single-component gel systems which limits the functionalities of the materials. Multi-component self-assembly leads to the formation of highly ordered and complex architectures while offering the possibility to generate hydrogels with interesting properties including functional complexity and diverse morphologies. Being able to incorporate various classes of biomolecules can allow for tailoring the materials' functionalities to specific application needs. Here, a novel peptide amphiphile, myristyl-Phe-Phe (C14-FF), was synthesized and explored for hydrogel formation. The hydrogel possesses a nanofiber matrix morphology, composed of β-sheet aggregates, a record-low gelation concentration for this class of compounds, and a unique solvent-dependent helical switch. The C14-FF hydrogel was then explored with various classes of biomolecules (carbohydrates, vitamins, proteins, building blocks of HA) to generate a multi-component library of gels that have potential to represent the complex natural extracellular matrix. Selected multi-component gels exhibit an excellent compatibility with mesenchymal stem cells showing high cell viability percentages, which holds great promise for applications in regenerative therapy.

Diacetylene-Functionalized Dendrons: Self-Assembled and Photopolymerized Three-Dimensional Networks for Advanced Self-Healing and Wringing Soft Materials

The physical properties of supramolecular soft materials strongly depend on the molecular packing structures constructed by thermodynamically and kinetically controlled molecular self-assembly. To investigate the relationship between molecular function and self-assembled molecular packing structure, a series of diacetylene (DA)-based supramolecules was synthesized by chemically connecting flexible dendrons to DA with amide (aDA-D) or ester (eDA-D) functions. The three-dimensional (3D) organogel network of amide-functionalized aDA-D was prepared in both polar and nonpolar solvents due to the intermolecular hydrogen bonding. 3D networks of aDA-D can be further stabilized by topochemical photopolymerization. The self-healing behavior of aDA-D was observed in the sheet-like structure formed in n-dodecane by the hydrophobic interaction between the gelator and solvent. The wringing behavior of aDA-D was also demonstrated using the dynamic interaction of amide function with n-butanol solvent. Kinetically controlled and photostabilized 3D networks can be a key component from biomedical devices to soft robotic applications.

Pyrene-Based Co-Assembled Supramolecular Gel; Morphology Changes and Macroscale Mechanical Property

Two pyrene derivatives having the perylenediimide (1) or the alky chain (2) in the middle of molecules were synthesized. Co-assembled supramolecular gels were prepared at different molar ratios of 0.2, 0.5, and 0.8 equiv. of 2 to 1. By SEM observation, the morphology of co-assembled supramolecular gels changed from spherical nanoparticles to three-dimensional network nanofibers as the ratio of 2 increased. In addition, the pyrene-excimer emission of co-assembled gels increased with increasing concentration of 2, and was stronger when compared with the condition without 1 or 2, indicating the formation of pyrene interaction between 1 and 2. In addition, the sol-gel transition was found to be reversible over repeated measurement by tube inversion method. The rheological properties of co-assembled supramolecular gels were also improved by increasing the ratio of 2, due to the increased nanoscale flexibility of supramolecular packing by introducing alkyl chain groups through heterogeneous pyrene interaction. These findings suggest that macroscale mechanical strength of co-assembled supramolecular gel was strongly influenced by nanoscale flexibility of the supramolecular packing.

Covalently Trapped Triarylamine-Based Supramolecular Polymers

C₃ -Symmetric triarylamine trisamides (TATAs), decorated with three norbornene end groups, undergo supramolecular polymerization and further gelation by π-π stacking and hydrogen bonding of their TATA cores. By using subsequent ring-opening metathesis polymerization, these physical gels are permanently crosslinked into chemical gels. Detailed comparisons of the supramolecular stacks in solution, in the physical gel, and in the chemical gel states, are performed by optical spectroscopies, electronic spectroscopies, atomic force microscopy, electronic paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, X-ray scattering, electronic transport measurements, and rheology. The results presented here clearly evidence that the core structure of the functional supramolecular polymers can be precisely retained during the covalent capture whereas the mechanical properties of the gels are concomitantly improved, with an increase of their storage modulus by two orders of magnitude.

Triarylamine-Based Supramolecular Polymers: Structures, Dynamics, and Functions

Triarylamine molecules and triarylamine-based covalent polymers have been extensively investigated for more than 60 years in academics and industry because of their intriguing electronic and optical characteristics. However, despite the profusion of studies made on these derivatives, only very recently have the first examples of supramolecular polymers based on the triarylamine motif been described in the literature. Specifically, our research group has shown that, by adding supplementary hydrogen bonding moieties such as amide functions in their periphery, it becomes possible to tightly pack triarylamine molecules in columnar supramolecular stacks presenting a collinear arrangement of their central nitrogen atoms. These supramolecular polymers can self-assemble into various soft hierarchical structures such as helical fibers, nanorods, nanospheres, and nanoribbons in the sol and in the gel states, into liquid-crystalline mesophases, and into highly organized supramolecular frameworks and single crystals thereof. Interestingly, the associated supramolecular polymerization mechanism involves a nucleation step of high activation energy, which requires the flattening of the triarylamine core. Because of this singularity and although dependent on the precise chemical nature of the building blocks, it has been demonstrated that their supramolecular polymerization can be triggered by original tools, such as light irradiation or electrochemistry, and that it can display autocatalytic growth behaviors, remarkably strong amplifications of chirality, and complex and competing thermodynamic and kinetic self-assembly pathways. Further, from a functional point of view, it has been highlighted that a partial oxidation of the triarylamine molecules results in an enhanced through-space delocalization of the charge carriers along the π-π stacked supramolecular polymers, a feature that confers to these nanowires exceptional transport properties. Upon increasing the charge carrier concentration, the electronic nature of these soft materials can be switched from semiconducting to metallic behavior, and the presence of highly delocalized unpaired electrons in supramolecular polaronic band structures has been further exploited to implement plasmonic properties within subwavelength organic interconnects and microscopic optical waveguides. Finally, by making use of the unusual dynamics and functions of triarylamine-based nanostructures, it becomes possible to precisely address their self-construction within confined environments or within nano- and micrometer scale devices. This has been demonstrated for instance between nanoparticles and between electrodes, inside inorganic nanopores, and inside phospholipid bilayers, as well as at the liquid-liquid interface. Such a meeting point between bottom-up and top-down technologies is of high interest to envision further developments and applications for this entirely new class of supramolecular polymers, which combine a unique relationship between their structures, their dynamics, and their subsequent emerging functional properties.
