Revealing the Mechanism of Combining Best Properties of Homogeneous and Heterogeneous Catalysis in Hybrid Pd/NHC Systems

The formation of transient hybrid nanoscale metal species from homogeneous molecular precatalysts has been demonstrated by in situ NMR studies of catalytic reactions involving transition metals with N-heterocyclic carbene ligands (M/NHC). These hybrid structures provide benefits of both molecular complexes and nanoparticles, enhancing the activity, selectivity, flexibility, and regulation of active species. However, they are challenging to identify experimentally due to the unsuitability of standard methods used for homogeneous or heterogeneous catalysis. Utilizing a sophisticated solid-state NMR technique, we provide evidence for the formation of NHC-ligated catalytically active Pd nanoparticles (PdNPs) from Pd/NHC complexes during catalysis. The coordination of NHCs via C(NHC)-Pd bonding to the metal surface was first confirmed by observing the Knight shift in the 13C NMR spectrum of the frozen reaction mixture. Computational modeling revealed that as little as few NHC ligands are sufficient for complete ligation of the surface of the formed PdNPs. Catalytic experiments combined with in situ NMR studies confirmed the significant effect of surface covalently bound NHC ligands on the catalytic properties of the PdNPs formed by decomposition of the Pd/NHC complexes. This observation shows the crucial influence of NHC ligands on the activity and stability of nanoparticulate catalytic systems.

Poly(N-Heterocyclic Carbene)-Capped Alloy and Core-Shell AuAg Bimetallic Nanoparticles

N-Heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-stabilized metal nanoparticles (NPs) have recently attracted considerable attention. While most efforts in the field have been devoted to the development of NHC-tethered monometallic NPs and enhancing their stabilities under various conditions, their bimetallic counterparts are rare in the literature. Herein, we demonstrate that the covalent immobilization of Au and Ag atoms on polymerized NHCs is a powerful method to access bimetallic AuAg NPs. In addition, we show that while AuAg alloy NPs are often obtained via this method, the use of bimetallic polymeric substrates with lower Ag content, relative to Au, results in the formation of core-shell NPs with Au core and Ag shell. Application of these nanomaterials for oxygen reduction reaction is demonstrated with all materials exhibiting electrocatalytic activity. This work demonstrates for the first time that while bimetallic poly(NHC-metal)s are viable substrates to access NHC-stabilized bimetallic NPs, careful adjustment of metal content in the polymeric substrates can finetune the microstructure of the resulting NPs, i.e. alloy vs. core-shell.

N-Heterocyclic Carbene Monolayers on Metal-Oxide Films: Correlations between Adsorption Mode and Surface Functionality

N-Heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands have been self-assembled on various metal and semimetal surfaces, creating a covalent bond with surface metal atoms that led to high thermal and chemical stability of the self-assembled monolayer. This study explores the self-assembly of NHCs on metal-oxide films (CuOx, FeOx, and TiOx) and reveals that the properties of these metal-oxide substrates play a pivotal role in dictating the adsorption behavior of NHCs, influencing the decomposition route of the monolayer and its impact on work function values. While the attachment of NHCs onto CuOx is via coordination with surface oxygen atoms, NHCs interact with TiOx through coordination with surface metal atoms and with FeOx via coordination with both metal and oxygen surface atoms. These distinct binding modes arise due to variances in the electronic properties of the metal atoms within the investigated metal-oxide films. Contact angle and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy measurements have shown a significantly higher impact of F-NHC adsorption on CuOx than on TiOx and FeOx , correlated to a preferred, averaged upright orientation of F-NHC on CuOx.

NMR Spectroscopic Signatures of Cationic Surface Sites from Supported Coinage Metals Interacting with N-Heterocyclic Carbenes

N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) have been extensively studied to modulate the reactivity of molecular catalysts, colloids, and their supported analogues, being isolated sites, clusters, or nanoparticles. While the interaction of NHCs on metal surfaces has been discussed in great detail, showing specific coordination chemistry depending on the type of NHC ligands, much less is known when the metal is dispersed on oxide supports, as in heterogeneous catalysts. Herein, we study the interaction of NHC ligands with Au surface sites dispersed on silica, a nonreducible oxide support. We identify the easy formation of bis-NHC ligated Au(I) surface sites parallel to what is found on metallic Au surfaces. These species display a specific 13C NMR spectroscopic signature that clearly distinguishes them from the mono-NHC Au(I) surface sites or supported imidazoliums. We find that bis-ligated surface species are not unique to supported Au(I) species and are found for the corresponding Ag(I) and Cu(I) species, as well as for the isolobal surface silanols. Furthermore, the interaction of NHC ligand with silica-supported Au nanoparticles also yields bis-NHC ligated Au(I) surface sites, indicating that metal atoms can also be easily extracted from nanoparticles, further illustrating the dynamics of these systems and the overall favorable formation of such bis-ligated species across a range of systems, besides what has been found on crystalline metal facets.

Self-Assembled Monolayers of N-Heterocyclic Olefins on Au(111)

Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of N-heterocyclic olefins (NHOs) have been prepared on Au(111) and their thermal stability, adsorption geometry, and molecular order were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, polarized X-ray absorption spectroscopy, scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The strong σ-bond character of NHO anchoring to Au induced high geometrical flexibility that enabled a flat-lying adsorption geometry via coordination to a gold adatom. The flat-lying adsorption geometry was utilized to further increase the surface interaction of the NHO monolayer by backbone functionalization with methyl groups that induced high thermal stability and a large impact on work-function values, which outperformed that of N-heterocyclic carbenes. STM measurements, supported by DFT modeling, identified that the NHOs were self-assembled in dimers, trimers, and tetramers constructed of two, three, and four complexes of NHO-Au-adatom. This self-assembly pattern was correlated to strong NHO-Au interactions and steric hindrance between adsorbates, demonstrating the crucial influence of the carbon-metal σ-bond on monolayer properties.

Coordination-Induced Trigger for Activity: N-Heterocyclic Carbene-Decorated Ceria Catalysts Incorporating Cr and Rh with Activity Induction by Surface Adsorption Site Control

A coordination-induced trigger for catalytic activity is proposed on an N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-decorated ceria catalyst incorporating Cr and Rh (ICy-r-Cr_0.19Rh_0.06CeO_z). ICy-r-Cr_0.19Rh_0.06CeO_z was prepared by grafting 1,3-dicyclohexylimidazol-2-ylidene (ICy) onto H₂-reduced Cr_0.19Rh_0.06CeO_z (r-Cr_0.19Rh_0.06CeO_z) surfaces, which went on to exhibit substantial catalytic activity for the 1,4-arylation of cyclohexenone with phenylboronic acid, whereas r-Cr_0.19Rh_0.06CeO_z without ICy was inactive. FT-IR, Rh K-edge XAFS, XPS, and photoluminescence spectroscopy showed that the ICy carbene-coordinated Rh nanoclusters were the key active species. The coordination-induced trigger for catalytic activity on the ICy-bearing Rh nanoclusters could not be attributed to electronic donation from ICy to the Rh nanoclusters. DFT calculations suggested that ICy controlled the adsorption sites of the phenyl group on the Rh nanocluster to promote the C-C bond formation of the phenyl group and cyclohexenone.

Pd-In intermetallic nanoparticles with high catalytic selectivity for liquid-phase semi-hydrogenation of diphenylacetylene

Intermetallic nanoparticles (NPs) are highly interesting materials in catalysis due to their geometrically ordered structures and altered electronic properties, but the synthesis of defined intermetallic NPs remains a challenge. Here, we report a novel and facile approach for the synthesis of intermetallic Pd-In NPs in ionic liquids (ILs) at moderate temperatures. Depending on the molar ratio of the metal precursors and the reaction temperature, single-phase Pd₃In, PdIn and Pd₃In₇ NPs were obtained, which was confirmed, e.g. by powder X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, and optical emission spectroscopy with inductively coupled plasma. The Pd-In NPs stabilized in ILs were used as catalysts in the liquid-phase semi-hydrogenation of diphenylacetylene (DPA). Highly ordered PdIn NPs with a CsCl type structure revealed both high activity and selectivity to cis-stilbene even at full DPA conversion. Intermetallic compounds such as PdIn can be used to isolate contiguous Pd atoms with another base metal into single Pd sites, thereby increasing the catalytic selectivity of Pd while stabilizing the individual sites in the intermetallic structures. This work may provide new pathways for the synthesis of single-phase intermetallic NPs and future insights into a more rational design of bimetallic catalysts with specific catalytic properties.

Bioinspired Pd-Cu Alloy Nanoparticles as Accept Agent for Dye Degradation Performances

Dye degradation is a key reaction in organic decomposition production through electron donor transferring. Palladium (Pd) is the best-known element for synthesis Pd-based catalyst, the surface status determines the scope of relative applications. Here we first prepare Pd-Cu alloy nanoparticles (NPs) by co-reduction of Cu(acac)₂ (acac = acetylacetonate) and Pd(C₅HF₆O₂)₂ in the presence of sodium borohydride (NaBH₄) and glutathione (GSH). The obtained Pd-Cu is about ~10 nm with super-hydrophilicity in aqueous mediums. The structural analysis clearly demonstrated the uniform distribution of Pd and Cu element. The colloidal solution keeps stability even during 30 days. Bimetallic Pd-Cu NPs shows biocompatibility in form of cell lines (IMEF, HACAT, and 239 T) exposed to colloidal solution (50 µg mL^-1) for 2 days. It shows the catalytic multi-performance for dye degradation such as methyl orange (MO), rhodamine B (RhB), and methylene blue (MB), respectively. The as-synthesized nanoparticles showed one of the best multiple catalytic activities in the industrially important (electro)-catalytic reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) to corresponding amines with noticeable reduced reaction time and increased rate constant without the use of any large area support. In addition, it exhibits peroxidase-like activity in the 3, 3', 5, 5'-Tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) color test and exhibit obvious difference with previous individual metal materials. By treated with high intensity focused ultrasound filed (HIFU), Pd-Cu NPs might be recrystallized and decreased the diameters than before. The enhancement in catalytic performance is observed obviously. This work expedites rational design and synthesis of the high-hierarchy alloy catalyst for biological and environment-friendly agents.

Bottom-up Synthesis of Water-Soluble Gold Nanoparticles Stabilized by N-Heterocyclic Carbenes: From Structural Characterization to Applications

N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) have become attractive ligands for functionalizing gold nanoparticle surfaces with applications ranging from catalysis to biomedicine. Despite their great potential, NHC stabilized gold colloids (NHC@AuNPs) are still scarcely explored and further efforts should be conducted to improve their design and functionalization. Here, the 'bottom-up' synthesis of two water-soluble gold nanoparticles (AuNP-1 and AuNP-2) stabilized by hydrophilic mono- and bidentate NHC ligands is reported together with their characterization by various spectroscopic and analytical methods. The NPs showed key differences likely to be due to the selected NHC ligand systems. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images showed small quasi-spherical and faceted NHC@AuNPs of similar particle size (ca. 2.3-2.6 nm) and narrow particle size distribution, but the colloids featured different ratios of Au(I)/Au(0) by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Furthermore, the NHC@AuNPs were supported on titania and fully characterized. The new NPs were studied for their catalytic activity towards the reduction of nitrophenol substrates, the reduction of resazurin and for their photothermal efficiency. Initial results on their application in photothermal therapy (PTT) were obtained in human cancer cells in vitro. The aforementioned reactions represent important model reactions towards wastewater remediation, bioorthogonal transformations and cancer treatment.

N-Heterocyclic Carbene Modified Palladium Catalysts for the Direct Synthesis of Hydrogen Peroxide

Heterogeneous palladium catalysts modified by N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) are shown to be highly effective toward the direct synthesis of hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂), in the absence of the promoters which are typically required to enhance both activity and selectivity. Catalytic evaluation in a batch regime demonstrated that through careful selection of the N-substituent of the NHC it is possible to greatly enhance catalytic performance when compared to the unmodified analogue and reach concentrations of H₂O₂ rivaling that obtained by state-of-the-art catalysts. The enhanced performance of the modified catalyst, which is retained upon reuse, is attributed to the ability of the NHC to electronically modify Pd speciation.

Rational Design of a Theranostic Agent Triggered by Endogenous Nitric Oxide in a Cellular Model of Alzheimer's Disease

Oxidative damage caused by upregulated nitric oxide (NO) plays an important role in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Currently, stimulus-triggered theranostic agents have received much attention due to benefits on disease imaging and targeted therapeutic effects. However, the development of a theranostic agent triggered by NO for AD remains unexplored. Herein, through the mechanism analysis of the reaction between a fluorophore of 9,14-diphenyl-9,14-dihydrodibenzo[a,c]phenazine (DPAC) and NO, which we occasionally found and thereafter structure optimization of DPAC, a theranostic agent DPAC-(peg)₄-memantine was fabricated. In an AD cellular model, DPAC-(peg)₄-memantine exhibits NO sensing ability for AD imaging. Meanwhile, DPAC-(peg)₄-memantine shows improved therapeutic by targeted drug release triggered by NO and sustained therapeutic effects owing to the synergetic antioxidative abilities via the anti-AD drug and NO scavenging. This work provides an unprecedented avenue for the studies on not only AD but also other diseases with NO upregulation.

Exploring the Biological Effect of Biosynthesized Au-Pd Core-Shell Nanoparticles through an Untargeted Metabolomics Approach

The biosynthesis of Au-Pd core-shell nanoparticles (NPs) with wild-type Escherichia coli (Au-Pd/E. coli) is an excellent newly established, environmentally friendly synthetic method for the fabrication of nanomaterials compared to traditional chemosynthesis. However, there is insufficient detailed bioinformation on the compatibility, metabolic process, and mechanism of this approach. Metabolomics approaches have provided an excellent alternative to numerous bioinformatics approaches for shedding light on the biological response of an organism exposed to external stimuli at the molecular level. In this study, two different doses (8 and 80 μg/mL) of Au-Pd/E. coli were applied to treat human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). Gas chromatography/mass spectrometry coupled with bioinformatics was used to analyze the changes in the HUVEC metabolome after treatment. The results indicated the occurrence of nonsignificant acute cytotoxicity based on cell proliferation and apoptosis analysis, while high concentrations (80 μg/mL) of Au-Pd/E. coli induced dramatic changes in energy metabolism, revealing a notable inhibition of the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle along with the enhancement of glycolysis, the pentose phosphate pathway, fatty acid biosynthesis, and lipid accumulation, which was correlated with mitochondrial dysfunction. The metabolomics results obtained for this novel Au-Pd/E. coli-cell system could broaden our knowledge of the biological effect of Au-Pd/E. coli and possibly reveal material modifications and technological innovations.

Nanocatalyzed Hydrogen Isotope Exchange

Recently, hydrogen isotope exchange (HIE) reactions have experienced impressive development due to the growing importance of isotope containing compounds in various fields including materials and life sciences, in addition to their classical use for mechanistic studies in chemistry and biology. Tritium-labeled compounds are also of crucial interest to study the in vivo fate of a bioactive substance or in radioligand binding assays. Over the past few years, deuterium-labeled drugs have been extensively studied for the improvement of ADME (absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion) properties of existing bioactive molecules as a consequence of the primary kinetic isotope effect. Furthermore, in the emergent "omic" fields, the need for new stable isotopically labeled internal standards (SILS) for quantitative GC- or LC-MS analyses is increasing. Because of their numerous applications, the development of powerful synthetic methods to access deuterated and tritiated molecules with either high isotope incorporation and/or selectivities is of paramount importance.HIE reactions allow a late-stage incorporation of hydrogen isotopes in a single synthetic step, thus representing an advantageous alternative to conventional multistep synthesis approaches which are time- and resource-consuming. Moreover, HIE reactions can be considered as the most fundamental C-H functionalization processes and are therefore of great interest for the chemists' community. Depending on the purpose, HIE reactions must either be highly regioselective or allow a maximal incorporation of hydrogen isotopes, sometimes both. In this context, metal-catalyzed HIE reactions are generally performed using either homogeneous or heterogeneous catalysis which may have considerable drawbacks including an insufficient isotope incorporation and a lack of chemo- and/or regioselectivity, respectively.Over the past 6 years, we have shown that nanocatalysis can be considered as a powerful tool to access complex labeled molecules (e.g., pharmaceuticals, peptides and oligonucleotides) via regio- and chemoselective or even enantiospecific labeling processes occurring at the surface of metallic nanoclusters (Ru or Ir). Numerous heterocyclic (both saturated and unsaturated) and acyclic scaffolds have been labeled with an impressive functional group tolerance, and highly deuterated compounds or high molar activity tritiated drugs have been obtained. An insight into mechanisms has also been provided by theoretical calculations to explain the regioselectivities of the isotope incorporation. Our studies have suggested that undisclosed key intermediates, including 4- and 5-membered dimetallacycles, account for the particular regioselectivities observed during the process, in contrast to the 5- or 6-membered metallacycle key intermediates usually encountered in homogeneous catalysis. These findings together with the important number of available coordination sites explain the compelling reactivity of metal nanoparticles, in between homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis. They represent innovative tools combining the advantages of both methods for the isotopic labeling and activation of C-H bonds of complex molecules.

Recent advances in the development of palladium nanocatalysts for sustainable organic transformations

In this review, we highlighted Pd nanocatalysts which have been used in the development of sustainable organic transformations including transfer hydrogenation, C–H bond activation, and some carbon–carbon couplings in the last five years.

Biomimetic Au/CeO2 Catalysts Decorated with Hemin or Ferrous Phthalocyanine for Improved CO Oxidation via Local Synergistic Effects

Biomimetic catalysts have drawn broad research interest owing to both high specificity and excellent catalytic activity. Herein, we report a series of biomimetic catalysts by the integration of biomolecules (hemin or ferrous phthalocyanine) onto well-defined Au/CeO₂, which leads to the high-performance CO oxidation catalysts. Strong electronic interactions among the biomolecule, Au, and CeO₂ were confirmed, and the CO uptake over hemin-Au/CeO₂ was roughly about 8 times greater than Au/CeO₂. Based on the Au/CeO₂(111) and hemin-Au/CeO₂(111) models, the density functional theory calculations reveal the mechanisms of the biomolecules-assisted catalysis process. The theoretical prediction suggests that CO and O₂ molecules preferentially bind to the surface of noncontacting Au atoms (low-coordinated sites) rather than the biomolecule sites, and the accelerating oxidation of Au-bound CO occurs via either the Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism or the Mars-van Krevelen mechanism. Accordingly, the findings provide useful insights into developing biomimetic catalysts with low cost and high activity.

Tuning the Reactivity of a Heterogeneous Catalyst using N-Heterocyclic Carbene Ligands for C-H Activation Reactions

We report the dramatic impact of the addition of N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) on the reactivity and selectivity of heterogeneous Ru catalysts in the context of C-H activation reactions. Using a simple and robust method, we prepared a series of new air-stable catalysts starting from commercially available Ru on carbon (Ru/C) and differently substituted NHCs. Associated with C-H deuteration processes, depending on Ru/C-NHC ratios, the chemical outcome can be controlled to a large extent. Indeed, tuning the reactivity of the Ru catalyst with NHC enabled: 1) increased chemoselectivity and the regioselectivity for the deuteration of alcohols in organic media; 2) the synthesis of fragile pharmaceutically relevant deuterated heterocycles (azine, purine) that are otherwise completely reduced using unmodified commercial catalysts; 3) the discovery of a novel reactivity for such heterogeneous Ru catalysts, namely the selective C-1 deuteration of aldehydes.

Organometallic Nanoparticles Ligated by NHCs: Synthesis, Surface Chemistry and Ligand Effects

Over the last 20 years, the use of metallic nanoparticles (MNPs) in catalysis has awakened a great interest in the scientific community, mainly due to the many advantages of this kind of nanostructures in catalytic applications. MNPs exhibit the characteristic stability of heterogeneous catalysts, but with a higher active surface area than conventional metallic materials. However, despite their higher activity, MNPs present a wide variety of active sites, which makes it difficult to control their selectivity in catalytic processes. An efficient way to modulate the activity/selectivity of MNPs is the use of coordinating ligands, which transforms the MNP surface, subsequently modifying the nanoparticle catalytic properties. In relation to this, the use of N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHC) as stabilizing ligands has demonstrated to be an effective tool to modify the size, stability, solubility and catalytic reactivity of MNPs. Although NHC-stabilized MNPs can be prepared by different synthetic methods, this review is centered on those prepared by an organometallic approach. Here, an organometallic precursor is decomposed under H2 in the presence of non-stoichiometric amounts of the corresponding NHC-ligand. The resulting organometallic nanoparticles present a clean surface, which makes them perfect candidates for catalytic applications and surface studies. In short, this revision study emphasizes the great versatility of NHC ligands as MNP stabilizers, as well as their influence on catalysis.

Hyaluronic Acid-Modified Au-Ag Alloy Nanoparticles for Radiation/Nanozyme/Ag+ Multimodal Synergistically Enhanced Cancer Therapy

Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) have been widely documented as tumor radiosensitizers via enhanced energy deposition of ionizing radiation. However, the sensitization efficiency of AuNPs is still far from satisfactory owing to the irradiation on nontarget tissues and the tumor radio-resistance. To address these issues, we report herein the rational design and development of hyaluronic acid-modified Au-Ag alloy nanoparticles (Au-Ag@HA NPs) with effective tumor radiosensitization by receptor mediated tumor targeting as well as microenvironment-activated hydroxyl radicals (•OH) generation. In our work, Au-Ag@HA NPs were synthesized by the coreduction of HAuCl₄ and AgNO₃ in the presence of trisodium citrate, followed by surface modification of HA to the Au-Ag alloy NPs. HA modification affords the alloy NPs with specific targeting to 4T1 breast cancer cells overexpressing CD44 receptor, while the introduction of Ag atom imparts the alloy NPs with superior multienzyme-like activities to the monometallic AuNPs for efficient tumor catalytic therapy. More importantly, the ionizing radiation and peroxidase-like activity of Au-Ag@HA NPs boost the production of •OH and the release of toxic Ag⁺ in the tumor sites, thereby leading to effective tumor therapeutic outcome. This work provides a promising treatment paradigm for radiation/nanozyme/Ag⁺ combined therapy against cancer and will advance the design and development of multifunctional nanoplatforms for synergetically enhanced tumor therapy.

Synthesis and Electrocatalytic HER Studies of Carbene-Ligated Cu3-xP Nanocrystals

N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) are an important class of ligands capable of making strong carbon-metal bonds. Recently, there has been a growing interest in the study of carbene-ligated nanocrystals, primarily coinage metal nanocrystals, which have found application as catalysts for numerous reactions. The general ability of NHC ligands to positively affect the catalytic properties of other types of nanocrystal catalysts remains unknown. Herein, we present the first carbene-stabilized Cu_3-xP nanocrystals. Inquiries into the mechanism of formation of NHC-ligated Cu_3-xP nanocrystals suggest that crystalline Cu_3-xP forms directly as a result of a high-temperature metathesis reaction between a tris(trimethylsilyl)phosphine precursor and an NHC-CuBr precursor, the latter of which behaves as a source of both the carbene ligand and Cu⁺. To study the effect of the NHC surface ligands on the catalytic performance, we tested the electrocatalytic hydrogen evolving ability of the NHC-ligated Cu_3-xP nanocrystals and found that they possess superior activity to analogous oleylamine-ligated Cu_3-xP nanocrystals. Density functional theory calculations suggest that the NHC ligands minimize unfavorable electrostatic interactions between the copper phosphide surface and H⁺ during the first step of the hydrogen evolution reaction, which contributes to the superior performance of NHC-ligated Cu_3-xP catalysts as compared to oleylamine-ligated Cu_3-xP catalysts.

A Benchtop Method for Appending Protic Functional Groups to N-Heterocyclic Carbene Protected Gold Nanoparticles

The remarkable resilience of N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) gold bonds has quickly made NHCs the ligand of choice when functionalizing gold surfaces. Despite rapid progress using deposition from free or CO₂ -protected NHCs, synthetic challenges hinder the functionalization of NHC surfaces with protic functional groups, such as alcohols and amines, particularly on larger nanoparticles. Here, we synthesize NHC-functionalized gold surfaces from gold(I) NHC complexes and aqueous nanoparticles without the need for additional reagents, enabling otherwise difficult functional groups to be appended to the carbene. The resilience of the NHC-Au bond allows for multi-step post-synthetic modification. Beginning with the nitro-NHC, we form an amine-NHC terminated surface, which further undergoes amide coupling with carboxylic acids. The simplicity of this approach, its compatibility with aqueous nanoparticle solutions, and its ability to yield protic functionality, greatly expands the potential of NHC-functionalized noble metal surfaces.

N-Heterocyclic Carbenes as Reversible Exciton-Delocalizing Ligands for Photoluminescent Quantum Dots

Delocalization of excitons within semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) into states at the interface of the inorganic core and organic ligand shell by so-called "exciton-delocalizing ligands (EDLs)" is a promising strategy to enhance coupling of QD excitons with proximate molecules, ions, or other QDs. EDLs thereby enable enhanced rates of charge carrier extraction from, and transport among, QDs and dynamic colorimetric sensing. The application of reported EDLs-which bind to the QDs through thiolates or dithiocarbamates-is however limited by the irreversibility of their binding and their low oxidation potentials, which lead to a high yield of photoluminescence-quenching hole trapping on the EDL. This article describes a new class of EDLs for QDs, 1,3-dimethyl-4,5-disubstituted imidazolylidene N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs), where the 4,5-substituents are Me, H, or Cl. Postsynthetic ligand exchange of native oleate capping ligands for NHCs results in a bathochromic shift of the optical band gap of CdSe QDs (R = 1.17 nm) of up to 111 meV while the colloidal stability of the QDs is maintained. This shift is reversible for the MeNHC-capped and HNHC-capped QDs upon protonation of the NHC. The magnitude of exciton delocalization induced by the NHC (after scaling for surface coverage) increases with the increasing acidity of its π system, which depends on the substituent in the 4,5-positions of the imidazolylidene. The NHC-capped QDs maintain photoluminescence quantum yields of up to 4.2 ± 1.8% for shifts of the optical band gap as large as 106 meV.
