Broad-Scope Amination of Aryl Sulfamates Catalyzed by a Palladium Phosphine Complex

Among phenol-derived electrophiles, aryl sulfamates are attractive substrates since they can be employed as directing groups for C-H functionalization prior to catalysis. However, their use in C-N coupling is limited only to Ni catalysis. Here, we describe a Pd-based catalyst with a broad scope for the amination of aryl sulfamates. We show that the N-methyl-2-aminobiphenyl palladacycle supported by the PCyp2ArXyl2 ligand (Cyp = cyclopentyl; ArXyl2 = 2,6-bis(2,6-dimethylphenyl)phenyl) efficiently catalyzes the C-N coupling of aryl sulfamates with a variety of nitrogen nucleophiles, including anilines, primary and secondary alkyl amines, heteroaryl amines, N-heterocycles, and primary amides. DFT calculations support that the oxidative addition of the aryl sulfamate is the rate-determining step. The C-N coupling takes place through a cationic pathway in the polar protic medium.

Tris(bicyclo[1.1.1]pentyl)phosphine: An Exceptionally Small Tri-tert-alkylphosphine and Its Bis-Ligated Pd(0) Complex

Tris(bicyclo[1.1.1]pentyl)phosphine can be prepared by radical addition of PH₃ to [1.1.1]propellane, giving the smallest tri-tert-alkylphosphine known. PBcp₃ is substantially smaller than PCy₃ and is comparable in electron-donating power to PEt₃. It gives a bis-ligated Pd(0) complex Pd(PBcp₃)₂ that is exceptionally reactive toward alkyl halide oxidative addition and functions as a general ligand for palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling of sp³ electrophiles. Radical addition of [1.1.1]propellane to phenylphosphine gives the bis(bicyclo[1.1.1]pentyl)phosphine derivative PBcp₂Ph, illustrating the generality of this approach to bicyclopentylphosphine synthesis.

Important Role of NH-Carbazole in Aryl Amination Reactions Catalyzed by 2-Aminobiphenyl Palladacycles

2-Aminobiphenyl palladacycles are among the most successful precatalysts for Pd-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions, including aryl amination. However, the role of NH-carbazole, a byproduct of precatalyst activation, remains poorly understood. Herein, the mechanism of the aryl amination reactions catalyzed by a cationic 2-aminobiphenyl palladacycle supported by a terphenyl phosphine ligand, PCyp₂Ar^Xyl2 (Cyp = cyclopentyl; Ar^Xyl2 = 2,6-bis(2,6-dimethylphenyl)phenyl), P1, has been thoroughly investigated. Combining computational and experimental studies, we found that the Pd(II) oxidative addition intermediate reacts with NH-carbazole in the presence of the base (NaO ^t Bu) to yield a stable aryl carbazolyl Pd(II) complex. This species functions as the catalyst resting state, providing the amount of monoligated LPd(0) species required for catalysis and minimizing Pd decomposition. In the case of a reaction with aniline, an equilibrium between the carbazolyl complex and the on-cycle anilido analogue is established, which allows for a fast reaction at room temperature. In contrast, heating is required in a reaction with alkylamines, whose deprotonation involves coordination to the Pd center. A microkinetic model was built combining computational and experimental data to validate the mechanistic proposals. In conclusion, our study shows that despite the rate reduction observed in some reactions by the formation of the aryl carbazolyl Pd(II) complex, this species reduces catalyst decomposition and could be considered an alternative precatalyst in cross-coupling reactions.

Structure-Reactivity Relationships of Buchwald-Type Phosphines in Nickel-Catalyzed Cross-Couplings

The dialkyl-ortho-biaryl class of phosphines, commonly known as Buchwald-type ligands, are among the most important phosphines in Pd-catalyzed cross-coupling. These ligands have also been successfully applied to several synthetically valuable Ni-catalyzed cross-coupling methodologies and, as demonstrated in this work, are top performing ligands in Ni-catalyzed Suzuki Miyaura Coupling (SMC) and C-N coupling reactions, even outperforming commonly employed bisphosphines like dppf in many circumstances. However, little is known about their structure-reactivity relationships (SRRs) with Ni, and limited examples of well-defined, catalytically relevant Ni complexes with Buchwald-type ligands exist. In this work, we report the analysis of Buchwald-type phosphine SRRs in four representative Ni-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions. Our study was guided by data-driven classification analysis, which together with mechanistic organometallic studies of structurally characterized Ni(0), Ni(I), and Ni(II) complexes allowed us to rationalize reactivity patterns in catalysis. Overall, we expect that this study will serve as a platform for further exploration of this ligand class in organonickel chemistry as well as in the development of new Ni-catalyzed cross-coupling methodologies.

Small molecule activation with bimetallic systems: a landscape of cooperative reactivity

There is growing interest in the design of bimetallic cooperative complexes, which have emerged due to their potential for bond activation and catalysis, a feature widely exploited by nature in metalloenzymes, and also in the field of heterogeneous catalysis. Herein, we discuss the widespread opportunities derived from combining two metals in close proximity, ranging from systems containing multiple M-M bonds to others in which bimetallic cooperation occurs even in the absence of M⋯M interactions. The choice of metal pairs is crucial for the reactivity of the resulting complexes. In this context, we describe the prospects of combining not only transition metals but also those of the main group series, which offer additional avenues for cooperative pathways and reaction discovery. Emphasis is given to mechanisms by which bond activation occurs across bimetallic structures, which is ascribed to the precise synergy between the two metal atoms. The results discussed herein indicate a future landscape full of possibilities within our reach, where we anticipate that bimetallic synergism will have an important impact in the design of more efficient catalytic processes and the discovery of new catalytic transformations.

LPdCl2(amine) complexes supported by terphenyl phosphanes: applications in aryl amination reactions

Despite the excellent catalytic properties display by NHC-Pd-PEPPSI complexes in cross-coupling, phosphane analogs have been barely screened. In this work, we report the synthesis and characterization of a series of LPdCl₂(amine) complexes bearing dialkylterphenyl phosphanes (PR₂Ar') and pyridine or morpholine ligands. The novel compounds have been tested as precatalysts in aryl amination reactions. The complex [(PCyp₂Ar^Xyl2)PdCl₂(morpholine)] shows the best catalytic activity allowing the room-temperature coupling of aryl bromides and chlorides with aniline.

New Phosphonite Ligands with High Steric Demand and Low Basicity: Synthesis, Structural Properties and Cyclometalated Complexes of Pt(II)

Two phosphonite ligands bearing the highly sterically demanding 2,6-bis (2,6-dimethylphenyl)phenyl group (ArXyl2), PArXyl2(OPhNO2)2 and PArXyl2(OPhNO2,Me)2, were prepared from the parent dihalophosphines PArXyl2X2 (X = Cl, Br) and the corresponding phenols, 4-nitrophenol and 4-nitro-2,6-dimethylphenol, respectively. DFT methods were used to examine their structural features and to determine three steric descriptors, namely the Tolman cone angle, the percentage of buried volume, and the percentage of the coordination sphere protected by the ligand. A comparison with the related terphenyl phosphines is also provided. Reactions of PArXyl2(OPhNO2)2 and PArXyl2(OPhNO2,Me)2 with several Pt(II) precursors were investigated, revealing a high tendency of both phosphonites to undergo C-H activation processes and generate five- or six-membered cyclometalated structures. The coordination chemistry of the new ligands was explored with isolation, among others, of three carbonyl complexes, 1-3∙CO, and the triphenylphosphine adduct 3∙PPh3. X-ray diffraction methods permitted the determination of the solid-state structures of the mononuclear methyl carbonyl complex 1∙CO, the dinuclear chloride-bridged complex 2 and the doubly cyclometalated complex 3∙SMe2, including the conformations adopted by the ligands upon coordination. All of the new compounds were characterized by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy in solution.

Dicoordinate Au(I)-Ethylene Complexes as Hydroamination Catalysts

A series of gold(I)–ethylene π-complexes containing a family of bulky phosphine ligands has been prepared. The use of these sterically congested ligands is crucial to stabilize the gold(I)–ethylene bond and prevent decomposition, boosting up their catalytic performance in the highly underexplored hydroamination of ethylene. The precatalysts bearing the most sterically demanding phosphines showed the best results reaching full conversion to the hydroaminated products under notably mild conditions (1 bar of ethylene pressure at 60 °C). Kinetic analysis together with density functional theory calculations revealed that the assistance of a second molecule of the nucleophile as a proton shuttle is preferred even when using an extremely congested cavity-shaped Au(I) complex. In addition, we have measured a strong primary kinetic isotopic effect that is consistent with the involvement of X–H bond-breaking events in the protodeauration turnover-limiting step.

Ni(II) Precatalysts Enable Thioetherification of (Hetero)Aryl Halides and Tosylates and Tandem C-S/C-N Couplings

Ni‐catalyzed C−S cross‐coupling reactions have received less attention compared with other C‐heteroatom couplings. Most reported examples comprise the thioetherification of most reactive aryl iodides with aromatic thiols. The use of C−O electrophiles in this context is almost uncharted. Here, we describe that preformed Ni(II) precatalysts of the type NiCl(allyl)(PMe₂Ar’) (Ar’=terphenyl group) efficiently couple a wide range of (hetero)aryl halides, including challenging aryl chlorides, with a variety of aromatic and aliphatic thiols. Aryl and alkenyl tosylates are also well tolerated, demonstrating, for the first time, to be competent electrophilic partners in Ni‐catalyzed C−S bond formation. The chemoselective functionalization of the C−I bond in the presence of a C−Cl bond allows for designing site‐selective tandem C−S/C−N couplings. The formation of the two C‐heteroatom bonds takes place in a single operation and represents a rare example of dual electrophile/nucleophile chemoselective process.

Site-Selective C-C Cleavage of Benzocyclobutenones Enabled by a Blocking Strategy Using Nickel Catalysis

Controlling the chemo- and regioselectivity of transition-metal-catalyzed C-C activation remains a great challenge. The transformations of benzocyclobutenones (BCBs) usually involve the cleavage of C1-C2 bond. In this work, an unprecedented highly selective cleavage of C1-C8 bond with the insertion of alkynes is achieved by using blocking strategy via Ni catalysis, providing an efficient method for synthesis of 1,8-disubstituted naphthalenes. Notably, the blocking group could be readily removed after the transformation.

Zero-valent ML2 complexes of group 10 metals supported by terphenyl phosphanes

Bulky terphenyl phosphane ligands PMe₂Ar' (Ar' = terphenyl group) facilitate the isolation of zero-valent bis-phosphane complexes of nickel, palladium and platinum. The former show coordination numbers greater than two in the solid state due to the existence of Ni-C_arene interactions with the terphenyl fragment.

Reductive C-C Coupling from Molecular Au(I) Hydrocarbyl Complexes: A Mechanistic Study

Organometallic gold complexes are used in a range of catalytic reactions, and they often serve as catalyst precursors that mediate C-C bond formation. In this study, we investigate C-C coupling to form ethane from various phosphine-ligated gem-digold(I) methyl complexes including [Au2(μ-CH3)(PMe2Ar')2][NTf2], [Au2(μ-CH3)(XPhos)2][NTf2], and [Au2(μ-CH3)(tBuXPhos)2][NTf2] {Ar' = C6H3-2,6-(C6H3-2,6-Me)2, C6H3-2,6-(C6H2-2,4,6-Me)2, C6H3-2,6-(C6H3-2,6-iPr)2, or C6H3-2,6-(C6H2-2,4,6-iPr)2; XPhos = 2-dicyclohexylphosphino-2',4',6'-triisopropylbiphenyl; tBuXPhos = 2-di-tert-butylphosphino-2',4',6'-triisopropylbiphenyl; NTf2 = bis(trifluoromethyl sulfonylimide)}. The gem-digold methyl complexes are synthesized through reaction between Au(CH3)L and Au(L)(NTf2) {L = phosphines listed above}. For [Au2(μ-CH3)(XPhos)2][NTf2] and [Au2(μ-CH3)(tBuXPhos)2][NTf2], solid-state X-ray structures have been elucidated. The rate of ethane formation from [Au2(μ-CH3)(PMe2Ar')2][NTf2] increases as the steric bulk of the phosphine substituent Ar' decreases. Monitoring the rate of ethane elimination reactions by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy provides evidence for a second-order dependence on the gem-digold methyl complexes. Using experimental and computational evidence, it is proposed that the mechanism of C-C coupling likely involves (1) cleavage of [Au2(μ-CH3)(PMe2Ar')2][NTf2] to form Au(PR2Ar')(NTf2) and Au(CH3)(PMe2Ar'), (2) phosphine migration from a second equivalent of [Au2(μ-CH3)(PMe2Ar')2][NTf2] aided by binding of the Lewis acidic [Au(PMe2Ar')]+, formed in step 1, to produce [Au2(CH3)(PMe2Ar')][NTf2] and [Au2(PMe2Ar')]+, and (3) recombination of [Au2(CH3)(PMe2Ar')][NTf2] and Au(CH3)(PMe2Ar') to eliminate ethane.

Nickel-assisted complete cleavage of CO by a silylene/siliconoid hybrid under formation of an Si[double bond, length as m-dash]C enol ether bridge

Reaction of a silylene-functionalized Si6 siliconoid with CO in the presence of catalytic quantities of a nickel(0) complex results in the complete cleavage of the CO triple bond, but preserves the Si6 scaffold with an exohedrally incorporated Si[double bond, length as m-dash]C enol ether bridge. The uncompromised cluster core emphasizes the role of the so-called benzpolarene motif as the energetic silicon pendants of benzene in carbon chemistry.

Terphenyl(bisamino)phosphines: electron-rich ligands for gold-catalysis

Terphenyl(bisamino)phosphines have been identified as effective ligands in cationic gold(i) complexes for the hydroamination of acetylenes. These systems are related to Buchwald phosphines and their steric properties have been evaluated. Effective hydroamination was noted even at low catalyst loadings and a series of cationic gold(i) complexes has been structurally characterized clearly indicating stabilizing effects through gold-arene interactions.

Dinuclear Cu(I) Halides with Terphenyl Phosphines: Synthesis, Photophysical Studies, and Catalytic Applications in CuAAC Reactions

Several dinuclear terphenyl phosphine copper(I) halide complexes of composition [CuX(PR₂Ar')]₂ (X = Cl, Br, I; R = hydrocarbyl, Ar' = 2,6-diarylterphenyl radical), 1-5, have been isolated from the reaction of CuX with 1 equiv of the phosphine ligand. Most of them have been characterized by X-ray diffraction studies in the solid state, thus allowing comparative discussions of different structural parameters, namely, Cu···Cu and Cu···Aryl separations, conformations adopted by coordinated phosphines, and planarity of the Cu₂X₂ cores. Centrosymmetric complexes [CuI(PMe₂Ar^Xyl2)]₂, 1c, and [CuI(PEt₂Ar^Mes2)]₂, 3c, despite their similar structures, show very distinct photoluminescence (PL) in powder form at room temperature. The photophysical behavior of these compounds in liquid solution, solid-solid Zeonex solution and powder samples at room temperature and 77 K have been investigated and supported by DFT calculation. Identification of vibronic coupling modes, done by group theory calculations and the technique of projection operators, shows that the manifestation of these modes is conditioned by crystal packing. Complexes [CuI(PMe₂Ar^Xyl2)]₂, 1c, and [CuI(PEt₂Ar^Mes2)]₂, 3c, display remarkable activity in copper-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition reactions involving preformed and in situ-made azides. Reactions are performed in H₂O, under aerobic conditions, with low catalyst loadings and tolerate the use of iodoalkynes as substrates.

Evidence for Genuine Bimetallic Frustrated Lewis Pair Activation of Dihydrogen with Gold(I)/Platinum(0) Systems

A joint experimental/computational effort to elucidate the mechanism of dihydrogen activation by a gold(I)/platinum(0) metal-only frustrated Lewis pair (FLP) is described herein. The drastic effects on H₂ activation derived from subtle ligand modifications have also been investigated. The importance of the balance between bimetallic adduct formation and complete frustration has been interrogated, providing for the first time evidence for genuine metal-only FLP reactivity in solution. The origin of a strong inverse kinetic isotopic effect has also been clarified, offering further support for the proposed bimetallic FLP-type cleavage of dihydrogen.

Dialkylterphenyl Phosphine-Based Palladium Precatalysts for Efficient Aryl Amination of N-Nucleophiles

A series of 2-aminobiphenyl palladacycles supported by dialkylterphenyl phosphines, PR₂ Ar' (R=Me, Et, iPr, Cyp (cyclopentyl), Ar'=Ar^Dipp2 , Ar^Xyl2f , Dipp (2,6-C6H3-(2,6-C6H3-(CHMe2)2)2), Xyl=xylyl) have been prepared and structurally characterized. Neutral palladacycles were obtained with less bulky terphenyl phosphines (i.e., Me and Et substituents) whereas the largest phosphines provided cationic palladacycles in which the phosphines adopted a bidentate hemilabile k¹ -P,η¹ -C_arene coordination mode. The influence of the ligand structure on the catalytic performance of these Pd precatalysts was evaluated in aryl amination reactions. Cationic complexes bearing the phosphines PiPr₂ Ar^Xyl2 and PCyp₂ Ar^Xyl2 were the most active of the series. These precatalysts have demonstrated a high versatility and efficiency in the coupling of a variety of nitrogen nucleophiles, including secondary amines, alkyl amines, anilines, and indoles, with electronically deactivated and ortho-substituted aryl chlorides at low catalyst loadings (0.25-0.75 mol % Pd) and without excess ligand.

Group 9 and 10 Metal Complexes of an Ylide-Substituted Phosphine: Coordination versus Cyclometalation and Oxidative Addition

Ylide-substituted phosphines (YPhos) have been shown to be excellent ligands for several transition metal catalyzed reactions. Investigations of the coordination behavior of the YPhos ligand YSPPh2 (1) [with YS = (Ph3P)(SO2Tol)C] toward group 9 and 10 metals revealed a surprisingly diverse coordination chemistry of the ligand. With Ni(CO)4, the formation of a di- as well as tricarbonyl complex is observed depending on the reaction conditions. In [( κP,η 2 -benzene-1)Ni(CO)2] the phosphine ligand also coordinates via a phosphonium bound phenyl group to the metal leading to a unique nickel η 2 -arene interaction, which can be viewed as an intermediate state toward P-C bond activation. Full cleavage of the P-C bond takes place with [Rh(COD)Cl]2 leading to a complex salt with [( κP,κO-1)Rh(COD)]+ as cation and a dirhodium trichloride complex anion. Here, YSPPh2 underwent P-C bond cleavage to thus act as an anionic diphosphine ligand. In contrast, in [( κP,κO-1)Rh(COD)]+ as well as [( κP,κO-1)Rh(CO)Cl], formed from the reaction of 1 with [Rh(CO)2Cl]2, the YPhos ligand acts as bidentate ligand complexing the metal via the phosphine and sulfonyl moiety with an intact PPh3 unit. A further type of coordination is observed with [Ir(COD)Cl]2. Here, phosphine coordination is accompanied by C-H activation at one of the phosphonium bound phenyl groups leading to a cyclometalated complex.
