Abstract
Nitrenes are a highly reactive, yet fundamental, compound class. They possess a monovalent nitrogen atom and usually a short life span, typically in the nanosecond range. Here, we report on the synthesis of a stable nitrene by photolysis of the arylazide MSFluindN3 (1), which gave rise to the quantitative formation of the arylnitrene MSFluindN (2) (MSFluind is dispiro[fluorene-9,3'-(1',1',7',7'-tetramethyl-s-hydrindacen-4'-yl)-5',9''-fluorene]) that remains unchanged for at least 3 days when stored under argon atmosphere at room temperature. The extraordinary life span permitted the full characterization of 2 by single-crystal x-ray crystallography, electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, and superconducting quantum interference device magnetometry, which supported a triplet ground state. Theoretical simulations suggest that in addition to the kinetic stabilization conferred by the bulky MSFluind aryl substituent, electron delocalization across the central aromatic ring contributes to the electron stabilization of 2.

Abstract
Direct conversion of hydrocarbons into amines represents an important and atom-economic goal in chemistry for decades. However, intermolecular cross-coupling of terminal alkenes with amines to form branched amines remains extremely challenging. Here, a visible-light and Co-dual catalyzed direct allylic C─H amination of alkenes with free amines to afford branched amines has been developed. Notably, challenging aliphatic amines with strong coordinating effect can be directly used as C─N coupling partner to couple with allylic C─H bond to form advanced amines with molecular complexity. Moreover, the reaction proceeds with exclusive regio- and chemoselectivity at more steric hinder position to deliver primary, secondary, and tertiary aliphatic amines with diverse substitution patterns that are difficult to access otherwise.

Abstract
A copper-promoted divergent intermolecular [2 + n] heteroannulation of β-CF3-1,3-enynes with alkyl azides via alkyl radical-driven HAT and radical substitution (C-C bond formation) to form four- to ten-membered saturated N-heterocycles is developed. This method enables the aryl-induced or kinetically controlled site selective functionalization of the remote C(sp3)-H bonds at positions 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, or 8 toward the nitrogen atom through triplet nitrene formation, radical addition across the C═C bond, HAT and radical substitution cascades, and features a broad substrate scope, excellent site selectivity, and facile late-stage derivatization of bioactive molecules. Initial deuterium-labeling and control experiments shed light on the reaction mechanism via nitrene formation and HAT.

Abstract
N-Trifluoromethylated organics may be applied in drug design, agrochemical synthesis, and materials science, among other areas. Yet, despite recent advances in the synthesis of aliphatic, cyclic and heterocyclic N-trifluoromethyl compounds, no strategy based on trifluoromethyl nitrene has hitherto been explored. Here we describe the formation of triplet trifluoromethyl nitrene from azidotrifluoromethane, a stable and safe-to-use precursor, by visible light photocatalysis. The addition of CF3 N to alkenes via biradical intermediates afforded previously unknown aziridines substituted with trifluoromethyl group on the nitrogen atom. The obtained aziridines were converted into either N-trifluoromethylimidazolines, via formal [3+2] cycloaddition with nitriles, mediated by a Lewis acid, or into N-trifluoromethylaldimines, via ring opening and aryl group migration mediated by a strong Brønsted acid. Our findings open new opportunities for the development of novel classes of N-CF3 compounds with possible applications in the life sciences.

Abstract
Herein, we report that bulky alkylphosphines such as PtBu3 can switch the roles from actor to spectator ligands to promote the FeCl2 -catalyzed N-amidation reaction of arylamines with dioxazolones, giving hydrazides in high efficiency and chemoselectivity. Mechanistic studies indicated that the phosphine ligands could facilitate the decarboxylation of dioxazolones on the Fe center, and the hydrogen bonding interactions between the arylamines and the ligands on Fe nitrenoid intermediates might play a role in modulating the delicate interplay between the phosphine ligand, arylamine, and acyl nitrene N, favoring N-N coupling over N-P coupling. The new ligand-promoted N-amidation protocols offer a convenient way to access various challenging triazane compounds via double or sequential N-amidation of primary arylamines.

Abstract
A mechanochemical synthesis of sulfonimidamides by iron(II)-catalyzed exogenous ligand-free N-acyl nitrene transfer to sulfinamides is reported. The one-step method tolerates a wide range of sulfinamides with various substituents under solvent-free ambient conditions. Compared to its solution-phase counterpart, this mechanochemical approach shows better conversion and chemoselectivity. Mechanistic investigations by ESI-MS revealed the generation of crucial nitrene iron intermediates.

Abstract
Modern times have witnessed an uprise in the synthesis and derivatization of nitrogen-containing fused heterocycles. Amination reactions involving nitrene chemistry have always been the most convenient choice for the incorporation of a nitrogen atom in a molecule. The utilization of an open nitrene species harnesses harsh conditions. Hence, transition metal-catalyzed C-H amination reactions using aminating agents have been an attractive choice. Electrophilic aminating agents for C-H amination reactions are well exploited due to their desirable reaction conditions. Out of all, anthranils have paved the way forward due to their utility in simultaneously forming two new functional groups (amine and carbonyl). Amination using anthranils follows a metal-nitrenoid pathway. Often, the amination has been followed by a Lewis acid or transition metal-mediated intramolecular cyclization to directly produce fused heterocycles. This review broadly demonstrates the utilization of anthranils as an aminating agent for transition metal-catalyzed C-H amination reactions. The focus has been given to the scope, limitations, and mechanistic understanding of using such an electrophilic aminating agent, anthranil, with transition metals.

Abstract
In this study, we present a novel and efficient approach for the oxidative esterification of sulfenamides using phenyliodonium diacetate, enabling the synthesis of sulfinimidate esters and sulfilimines under mild and metal-free conditions, with yields reaching up to 99%. The protocol is readily scalable and compatible with a diverse range of substrates and functional groups, and we demonstrate its potential for late-stage functionalization of pharmacologically relevant molecules. Furthermore, we propose a plausible reaction mechanism to account for the observed sequence of events.

Abstract
A novel oxadiazolone-based method for the synthesis of 3-aminobenzisoxazoles by N-O bond formation and of 2-aminobenzoxazoles through a Tiemann-type rearrangement has been developed. The synthesis of these two pharmaceutically relevant heterocycles was realized by an unexplored retrosynthetic disconnection using a cyclic nitrenoid precursor-based strategy. The selective formation of the two isomers was significantly influenced by steric and electronic effects of substituents. However, tetrabutylammonium chloride (TBACl) efficiently promoted the Tiemann-type rearrangement over N-O bond formation. Control experiments indicate that deprotonation of the phenol induces both rearrangements.

Abstract
A catalytic system for intermolecular benzylic C(sp3)-H amination is developed utilizing 1,2,3,4-tetrazole as a nitrene precursor via iron catalysis. This method enables direct installation of 2-aminopyridine into the benzylic and heterobenzylic position. The method selectively aminates 2° benzylic C(sp3)-H bond over the 3° and 1° benzylic C(sp3)-H bonds. Experimental studies reveal that the C(sp3)-H amination undergoes via the formation of a benzylic radical intermediate. This study reports the discovery of new method for 2-pyridine substituted benzylamine synthesis using inexpensive, biocompatible base metal catalysis that should have wide application in the context of medicinal chemistry and drug discovery.

Abstract
Mechanistic explorations and kinetic evaluations were performed based on electronic structure calculations at the CASPT2//CASSCF level of theory, the Fermi's golden rule combined with the Dexter model, and the Marcus theory to unveil the key factors regulating the processes of photocatalytic C(sp3)-H amidation starting from the newly emerged nitrene precursor of hydroxamates. The highly reactive nitrene was found to be generated efficiently via a triplet-triplet energy transfer process and to be benefited from the advantages of hydroxamates with long-range charge-transfer (CT) excitation from the N-centered lone pair to the 3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)benzoyl group. The properties of the metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (MLCT) state of photocatalysts, the functionalization of chemical moieties for substrates involved in the charge-transfer (CT) excitation, such as the electron-withdrawing trifluoromethyl group, and the energetic levels of singlet and triplet reaction pathways may regulate the reaction yield of C(sp3)-H amidation. Kinetic evaluations show that the triplet-triplet energy transfer is the main driving force of the reaction rather than the single electron transfer process. The effects of electronic coupling, molecular rigidity, and excitation energies on the energy transfer efficiency were further discussed. Finally, we investigated the inverted behavior of single-electron transfer, which is correlated unfavorably to the catalytic efficiency and amidation reaction. All theoretical explorations allow us to better understand the generation of nitrene with visible-light photocatalysts, to expand highly efficient substrate sources, and to broaden our scope of available photosensitizers for various cross-coupling reactions and the construction of N-heterocycles.

Abstract
Recent interest in skeletal editing necessitates the continued development of reagent classes with the ability to transfer single atoms. Terminal transition metal nitrides hold immense promise for single-atom transfer, though their use in organic synthesis has so far been limited. Here we demonstrate a synthetic cycle with associated detailed mechanistic studies that primes the development of terminal transition metal nitrides as valuable single-atom transfer reagents. Specifically, we show [cis-terpyOsNCl2 ]PF6 inserts nitrogen into indenes to afford isoquinolines. Mechanistic studies for each step (insertion, aromatization, product release, and nitride regeneration) are reported, including crystallographic characterization of diverted intermediates, kinetics, and computational studies. The mechanistic foundation set by this synthetic cycle opens the door to the further development of nitrogen insertion heteroarene syntheses promoted by late transition metal nitrides.

Abstract
Dioxazolone has been attractive as an important synthon for a direct C-H amidation through a nitrene intermediate or Curtius rearrangement to form the isocyanate. However, the combination of two reaction models of dioxazolone has not been reported. Herein, a cobalt-catalyzed C-H and N-H functionalization of 1-arylpyrazolidinones with dioxazolones was developed. The dioxazolones acted as an amidated and carboxamidated reagent. Three C-N bonds were formed in a "one-pot" manner, which promoted the requirement of synthetic diversity.

Abstract
N-functionalized aziridines, which are both useful intermediates and important synthetic targets, can be envisioned as arising from the addition of nitrenes (i.e., NR fragments) to olefinic substrates. The exceptional reactivity of most nitrenes, in particular with respect to unimolecular decomposition, prevents general application of nitrene-transfer to the synthesis of N-functionalized aziridines. Here we demonstrate N-aryl aziridine synthesis via 1) olefin aziridination with N-aminopyridinium reagents to afford N-pyridinium aziridines followed by 2) Ni-catalyzed C-N cross-coupling of the N-pyridinium aziridines with aryl boronic acids. The N-pyridinium aziridine intermediates also participate in ring-opening chemistry with a variety of nucleophiles to afford 1,2-aminofunctionalization products. Mechanistic investigations indicate aziridine cross-coupling proceeds via a noncanonical mechanism involving initial aziridine opening promoted by the bromide counterion of the Ni catalyst, C-N cross-coupling, and finally aziridine reclosure. Together, these results provide new opportunities to achieve selective incorporation of generic aryl nitrene equivalents in organic molecules.

Abstract
Intramolecular alkyne hydroamidation represents a straightforward approach for the access to synthetically valuable cyclic enamides. Despite some advances made in this realm, the ability to attain a precise regiocontrol still remains challenging, especially for endo cyclization that leads to six-membered and larger azacyclic rings. Herein, we report a NiH-catalyzed intramolecular hydroamidation of alkynyl dioxazolones that allows for an excellent endo selectivity, thus affording a range of six- to eight-membered endocyclic enamides with a broad scope. Mechanistic investigations revealed that Ni(I) catalysis is operative in the current system, proceeding via regioselective syn-hydronickelation, alkenylnickel E/Z isomerization, and Ni-centered inner-sphere nitrenoid transfer. In particular, the key alkenylnickel isomerization step, which previously lacked mechanistic understandings, was found to take place through the η2-vinyl transition state. The synthetic value of this protocol was demonstrated by diastereoselective modifications of the obtained endocyclic enamides to highly functionalized δ-lactam scaffolds.

Abstract
Treatment of 4-(2-hydroaminoalkylidenyl)- and 4-(2-hydroxyalkylidenyl)-substituted isoxazol-5(4H)-ones with catalytic amounts of [RuCl2(p-cymene)]2, without any additive, afforded pyrazole- and isoxazole-4-carboxylic acids, respectively. The presence of an intramolecular H-bond in these substrates was the key to divert the classical mechanism toward a ring-opening non-decarboxylative path that is expected to generate a vinyl Ru-nitrenoid intermediate, the cyclization of which affords the rearranged products. A gram scale protocol demonstrated the synthetic applicability of this transformation.

Abstract
Pt(II) and Au(III)-mediated intermolecular divergent annulations of benzofurazans and ynamides highlighted the N- to O-selectivity of tunable metal carbene intermediates. PtCl2 with a bulky phosphite ligand resulted in the specific synthesis of six-membered quinoxaline N-oxides and successfully suppressed the in-situ deoxygenation of N-oxides. On the other hand, an unique gold(III) catalyst (2,6-di-MeO-PyrAuCl3) led to the five-membered ring products, benzimidazoles. A broad scope of functional groups was well compatible, delivering better yields and selectivities in contrast to conventional gold(I) catalysts. The different behavior of presumed platinum(II) and gold(III) carbenes with respect to chemoselectivity was intensively examined by experiments and DFT calculations. A detailed mechanistic study, based on DFT calculations, revealed that the highly electrophilic carbocation-like gold(III) carbene triggers an oxophilic cyclization, followed by a cascade ring contraction and acyl migration. On the contrary, the Pt carbene species is less cationic, favoring the formation of the six-membered ring via N-attack. Benzofurazan, a cyclic heterocycle, can form open-chain metal carbene species in the presence of suitable catalysts. Here the authors show divergent reactivity when using gold(III) and platinum(II) catalysts, and perform computational and experimental mechanistic studies to explain the differing reactivity

Abstract
3-Aminoindazoles are privileged scaffolds for bioactive drug-like molecules. In this study, a microwave-assisted cascade reaction for the synthesis of N-1 substituted 3-aminoindazoles with yields up to 81% has been developed. Starting from 3-(2-bromoaryl)-1,2,4-oxadiazol-5(4H)-ones, the reaction exhibits a broad substrate scope including anilines, aliphatic amines, and sulfonamides and bypasses selectivity issues between N-1 and 3-amino group. Furthermore, the Differential Scanning Fluorimetry screen of a kinase panel demonstrated the value of targeting N-1 substituted 3-aminoindazoles as kinase-biased fragments.

Abstract
Allylic amines are valuable synthetic targets en route to diverse biologically active amine products. Current allylic C-H amination strategies remain limited with respect to the viable N-substituents. Herein, we disclose a new electrochemical process to prepare aliphatic allylic amines by coupling two abundant starting materials: secondary amines and unactivated alkenes. This oxidative transformation proceeds via electrochemical generation of an electrophilic adduct between thianthrene and the alkene substrates. Treatment of these adducts with aliphatic amine nucleophiles and base provides allylic amine products in high yield. This synthetic strategy is also amenable to functionalization of feedstock gaseous alkenes at 1 atm. In the case of 1-butene, high Z-selective crotylation is observed. This strategy, however, is not limited to the synthesis of simple building blocks; complex biologically active molecules are suitable as both alkene and amine coupling partners. Preliminary mechanistic studies implicate vinylthianthrenium salts as key reactive intermediates.

Abstract
Herein, visible-light-driven iron-catalyzed nitrene transfer reactions with dioxazolones for intermolecular C(sp3 )-N, N=S, and N=P bond formation are described. These reactions occur with exogenous-ligand-free process and feature satisfactory to excellent yields (up to 99 %), an ample substrate scope (109 examples) under mild reaction conditions. In contrast to intramolecular C-H amidations strategies, an intermolecular regioselective C-H amidation via visible-light-induced nitrene transfer reactions is devised. Mechanistic studies indicate that the reaction proceeds via a radical pathway. Computational studies show that the decarboxylation of dioxazolone depends on the conversion of ground sextet state dioxazolone-bounding iron species to quartet spin state via visible-light irradiation.

Abstract
Metal-catalyzed C-N bond formation reactions via acylnitrene transfer have recently attracted much attention, but direct detection of the proposed acylnitrenoid/acylimido M(NCOR) (R=aryl or alkyl) species in these reactions poses a formidable challenge. Herein, we report on Ru(NCOR) intermediates in C-N bond formation catalyzed by [RuIV (Por)Cl2 ]/N3 COR, a catalytic method applicable to aziridine/oxazoline formation from alkenes, amination of substituted indoles, α-amino ketone formation from silyl enol ethers, amination of C(sp3 )-H bonds, and functionalization of natural products and carbohydrate derivatives (up to 99 % yield). Experimental studies, including HR-ESI-MS and EPR measurements, coupled with DFT calculations, lend evidence for the formulation of the Ru(NCOR) acylnitrenoids as a RuV -imido species.

Abstract
Intermolecular hydroaminoalkylation reactions of alkynes with secondary amines, which selectively give access to allylic amines with E configuration of the alkene unit, are achieved in the presence of titanium catalysts. Successful reactions of symmetrically substituted diaryl- and dialkylalkynes as well as a terminal alkyne take place with N-benzylanilines, N-alkylanilines, and N-alkylbenzylamines.

Abstract
A readily available catalyst consisting of iron dichloride in combination with 1,10-phenanthroline catalyzes the ring-closing C-H amination of N-benzoyloxyurea to form imidazolidin-2-ones in high yields. The C-H amination reaction is very general and applicable to benzylic, allylic, propargylic, and completely non-activated aliphatic C(sp3 )-H bonds, and it also works for C(sp2 )-H bonds. The surprisingly simple method can be performed under open flask conditions.

Abstract
The N-acyloxyamides were employed as effective N-acyl nitrene precursors in reactions with thioethers under the catalysis of a commercially available Ru(II) complex, from which a variety of sulfimides were synthesized efficiently and mildly. If an allyl group is contained in the thioether precursor, the [2,3]-sigmatropic rearrangement of the sulfimide occurs simultaneously and the N-allyl-N-(thio)amides were obtained as the final products. Preliminary mechanistic studies indicated that the Ru-nitrenoid species should be a key intermediate in the transformation.

Abstract
Allylic C-H amination is currently accomplished with (sulfon)amides or carbamates. Here we show the first allylic amination that can directly afford alkyl allylamines, enabled by the reactivity of thianthrene-based nitrogen sources that can be prepared from primary amines in a single step.

Abstract
This study demonstrates for the first time that easily accessible transition‐metal acylnitrenoids can be used for controlled direct C(sp3)‐H oxygenations. Specifically, a ruthenium catalyst activates N‐benzoyloxycarbamates as nitrene precursors towards regioselective intramolecular C−H oxygenations to provide cyclic carbonates, hydroxylated carbamates, or 1,2‐diols. The method can be applied to the chemoselective C−H oxygenation of benzylic, allylic, and propargylic C(sp3)−H bonds. The reaction can be performed in an enantioselective fashion and switched in a catalyst‐controlled fashion between C−H oxygenation and C−H amination. This work provides a new reaction mode for the regiocontrolled and stereocontrolled conversion of C(sp3)‐H into C(sp3)−O bonds.

Abstract
We report the synthesis of high-valent molybdenum(VI) bis-imido complexes 1-4 with dipyrromethene (DPM) supporting ligands of the general formula (DPMR)Mo(NR')2Cl (R, R' = mesityl (Mes) or tert-butyl (tBu)). The electrochemical and chemical properties of 1-4 reveal unexpected ligand noninnocence and reactivity. 15N NMR spectroscopy is used to assess the electronic properties of the imido ligands in the tert-butyl complexes 1 and 3. Complex 1 is inert toward ligand (halide) exchange with bulky phenolates such as KOMes or amides (e.g., KN(SiMe3)2), whereas the use of the lithium alkyl LiCH2SiMe3 results in a rare nucleophilic β-alkylation of the DPM ligand. While the reductions of the complexes occur at molybdenum, the oxidation is centered at the DPM ligand. Quantum-chemical calculations (complete active space self-consistent field, density functional theory) suggest facile (near-infrared) interligand charge transfer to the imido ligand, which might preclude the isolation of the oxidized complex [1]+ in the experiment.

Abstract
Subtle differences in reaction conditions facilitated unprecedented photocatalytic reactions of oxadiazolines by energy transfer catalysis. A set of compounds, sulfoximines and benzimidazoles, were ingeniously prepared from oxadiazolines via nitrene intermediates by photocatalytic N-O/C-N bond cleavages. The synthesis of sulfoximines was realized through intermolecular N-S bond formation between nitrene intermediates and sulfoxides, whereas benzimidazoles were obtained via intramolecular aromatic substitution of the nitrene to the tethered aryl substituent.

Abstract
Formation of N-N bonds may offer an original approach to various nitrogen-containing heterocycles with numerous applications. For this purpose, we found that readily available heteroaromatic amines are appropriate substrates for providing an efficient and innovative approach for the formation of N-N bonds in the presence of iodine (III) reagent in very mild conditions. This method makes it possible to synthesize nitrogen rich triazapentalene derivatives exhibiting fluorescent properties, inaccessible with existing approaches.

Abstract
DFT study suggests that the C-H cleavage involved in the C(sp3)-H amination catalyzed by manganese perchlorophthalocyanine complex [MnIII(ClPc)]+ proceeds via hydride transfer (HYT), instead of hydrogen atom transfer (HAT), thus elucidating why the reaction favors aminating the electron-rich C-H bond, rather than that with smaller bond dissociation energy preferred by HAT. Detailed analyses indicate the HYT actually occurs via concerted electron and hydrogen atom transfers and the redox-active ClPc ligand enables the HYT.

Abstract
![]()
Direct
synthetic routes to amidines are desired, as they are widely
present in many biologically active compounds and organometallic complexes. N-Acyl amidines in particular can be used as a starting
material for the synthesis of heterocycles and have several other
applications. Here, we describe a fast and practical copper-catalyzed
three-component reaction of aryl acetylenes, amines, and easily accessible
1,4,2-dioxazol-5-ones to N-acyl amidines, generating
CO2 as the only byproduct. Transformation of the dioxazolones
on the Cu catalyst generates acyl nitrenes that rapidly insert into
the copper acetylide Cu–C bond rather than undergoing an undesired
Curtius rearrangement. For nonaromatic dioxazolones, [Cu(OAc)(Xantphos)]
is a superior catalyst for this transformation, leading to full substrate
conversion within 10 min. For the direct synthesis of N-benzoyl amidine derivatives from aromatic dioxazolones, [Cu(OAc)(Xantphos)]
proved to be inactive, but moderate to good yields were obtained when
using simple copper(I) iodide (CuI) as the catalyst. Mechanistic studies
revealed the aerobic instability of one of the intermediates at low
catalyst loadings, but the reaction could still be performed in air
for most substrates when using catalyst loadings of 5 mol %. The herein
reported procedure not only provides a new, practical, and direct
route to N-acyl amidines but also represents a new
type of C–N bond formation.
