Optoelectronic, Aggregation, and Redox Properties of Double-Rotor Boron Difluoride Hydrazone Dyes

Construction of Boron Difluoride Complexes with Asymmetric N,N'-Bidentate Ligands

Boron difluoride (BF2) complexes with asymmetrical N,N'-bidentate ligands have received increasing attention due to their fascinating properties and broad applications. They are generally constructed in two steps: ligand formation, followed by boron complexation. This review focuses on categorizing these BF2 complexes based on the key synthetic strategies that have been applied in the ligand formation steps. The post-functionalization, properties and applications of different types of BF2 complexes are presented. Their challenges and opportunities are also discussed. This should help the future rational design and synthesis of BF2 complexes with intriguing properties and practical applications.

Pnictogen-Rich Heterocycles Derived from a Phosphadiazonium Cation

Heterocycles that pair main group elements and nitrogen are extremely important within the π-conjugated heterocycles research community. Compared to the vast number of boron-nitrogen heterocycles, those that include phosphorus are less common. Furthermore, the use of phosphorus-nitrogen triple bonds of any type to prepare such compounds is unprecedented. Here, we pair pyridyl hydrazonide ligands with phosphadiazonium cations and demonstrate that the chelated Mes*NP group is directly implicated in the photophysical and redox properties observed for the resulting heterocycles. In doing so, we introduce a novel building block for the production of phosphorus-containing heterocycles that could find use in small molecule activation and catalysis or as the functional component of emerging organic electronics.

1,2-BF2 Shift and Photoisomerization Induced Multichromatic Response

Adaptive materials that exhibit a multichromatic response as a function of applied stimulus are highly desirable, as they can result in applications ranging from smart surfaces to anticounterfeit devices. Here we report on such a system based on an intriguing thermal 1,2-BF2 shift that transforms a visible-light-activated azo-BF2 photoswitch into a BF2-hydrazone fluorophore (BODIHY) in both solution and the solid-state. Structure-property analysis, in conjunction with DFT calculations, reveals that the shift is catalyzed by the spatial proximity of an oxygen atom next to the BF2 group and that the activation originates from an electronic and not steric effect. Theoretical calculations also show that while the energy barrier for the trans → BODIHY transformation is accessible at room temperature (thermal half-life of 30 h), the cis → BODIHY transformation has a much higher barrier, which is why the 1,2-BF2 shift is not observed for the cis form. The photoswitching of the azo-BF2, in conjunction with the 1,2-BF2 shift, was then used in the multicolor modulation of a switch-containing cross-linked polydimethylsiloxane film using light and/or heat stimuli, elaborating the usefulness of the sophisticated reaction cascade that can be accessed from this simple system.

Thiazole Boron Difluoride Dyes with Large Stokes Shift, Solid State Emission and Room-Temperature Phosphorescence

The small Stokes shift and weak emission in the solid state are two main shortcomings associated with the boron-dipyrromethene (BODIPY) family of dyes. This study presents the design, synthesis and luminescent properties of boron difluoro complexes of 2-aryl-5-alkylamino-4-alkylaminocarbonylthiazoles. These dyes display Stokes shifts (Δλ, 77-101 nm) with quantum yields (ϕ_FL ) up to 64.9 and 34.7 % in toluene solution and in solid state, respectively. Some of these compounds exhibit dual fluorescence and room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) emission properties with modulable phosphorescence quantum yields (ϕ_PL ) and lifetime (τ_p up to 251 μs). The presence of intramolecular H-bonds and negligible π-π stacking revealed by X-ray crystal structure might account for the observed large Stokes shift and significant solid-state emission of these fluorophores, while the enhanced spin-orbit coupling (SOC) of iodine and the self-assembly driven by halogen bonding, π-π and C-H^… π interactions could be responsible for the observed RTP of iodine containing phosphors.

Tuning the Properties of Donor-Acceptor and Acceptor-Donor-Acceptor Boron Difluoride Hydrazones via Extended π-Conjugation

Molecular materials with π-conjugated donor-acceptor (D-A) and acceptor-donor-acceptor (A-D-A) electronic structures have received significant attention due to their usage in organic photovoltaic materials, in organic light-emitting diodes, and as biological imaging agents. Boron-containing molecular materials have been explored as electron-accepting units in compounds with D-A and A-D-A properties as they often exhibit unique and tunable optoelectronic and redox properties. Here, we utilize Stille cross-coupling chemistry to prepare a series of compounds with boron difluoride hydrazones (BODIHYs) as acceptors and benzene, thiophene, or 9,9-dihexylfluorene as donors. BODIHYs with D-A and A-D-A properties exhibited multiple reversible redox waves, solid-state emission with photoluminescence quantum yields up to 10%, and aggregation-induced emission (AIE). Optical band gaps (or highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO)-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) gaps) determined for these compounds (2.02-2.25 eV) agree well with those determined from cyclic voltammetry experiments (2.05-2.42 eV). The optoelectronic properties described herein are rationalized with density functional theory calculations that support the interpretation of the experimental findings. This work provides a foundation of understanding that will allow for the consideration of D-A and A-D-A BODIHYs to be incorporated into applications (e.g., organic electronics) where fine-tuning of band gaps is required.

Recent advances in the synthesis of luminescent tetra-coordinated boron compounds

Tetra-coordinated boron compounds offer a plethora of luminescent materials. Different chelation around the boron center (O,O-, N,C-, N,O-, and N,N-) has been explored to tune the electronic and photophysical properties of tetra-coordinated boron compounds. A number of fascinating molecules with interesting properties such as aggregation induced emission, mechanochromism and tunable emission by changing the solvent polarity were realised. Owing to their rich and unique properties, some of the molecules have shown applications in making optoelectronic devices, probes and so on. This perspective provides an overview of the recent developments of tetra-coordinated boron compounds and their potential applications.

2-(4-(Dimethylamino)phenyl)-3,3-difluoro-4,6-diphenyl-3,4-dihydro-1,2,4,5,3-tetrazaborinin-2-ium-3-ide

Reaction of 1-(4-(dimethylamino)phenyl)-3,5-diphenylformazane with boron trifluoride diethyl etherate (5 equiv) in the presence of triethylamine (3 equiv) in toluene medium gave “boratetrazine”—2-(4-(dimethylamino)phenyl)-3,3-difluoro-4,6-diphenyl-3,4-dihydro -1,2,4,5,3-tetrazaborinin-2-ium-3-ide in a 58% yield.

The Contribution of Density Functional Theory to the Atomistic Knowledge of Electrochromic Processes

In this review, we provide a brief overview of the contribution that computational studies can offer to the elucidation of the electronic mechanisms responsible for the electrochromism phenomenon, through the use of the density functional theory (DFT) and its time-dependent formulation (TDDFT). Although computational studies on electrochromic systems are not as numerous as those for other physico-chemical processes, we will show their reliability and ability to predict structures, excitation energies, and redox potentials. The results confirm that these methods not only help in the interpretation of experimental data but can also be used for the rational design of molecules with interesting electrochromic properties to be initiated for synthesis and experimental characterization.

Artificial light-harvesting systems (LHSs) based on boron-difluoride (BF2) hydrazone complexes (BODIHYs)

The hydrazone based BF₂–complexes (BODIHYs; B1–B2) have been synthesized and their photophysical and aggregation behavior have been established. These BODIHYs have been showed light harvesting properties in presence of RhB as acceptor.

A Boron Difluoride Hydrazone (BODIHY) Polymer Exhibits Aggregation-Induced Emission

Polymers that exhibit aggregation-induced emission (AIE) find use, for example, as cell-imaging agents and as fluorometric sensors due to their unique optical properties. However, the structural diversity of AIE-active polymers has not necessarily advanced at the same rate as their applications. In this work, ring-opening metathesis polymerization is used to synthesize the first example of a polymer (M_n  = 61,600 g mol^-1 , Đ = 1.32) containing boron difluoride hydrazone (BODIHY) heterocycles in its repeating unit. The BODIHY monomer and polymer described absorb and emit in the visible region in solution (λ_abs  = 428 and 429 nm, λ_em  = 528 and 526 nm) and as thin films (λ_abs  = 443 and 440 nm, λ_em  = 535 and 534 nm). Monomer (Φ_Film  = 10%) and polymer (Φ_Film  = 6%) exhibit enhanced emission as thin films compared to solution (Φ_Soln  ≤ 1%) as well as AIE upon the addition of water to DMF solutions as a result of restriction of intramolecular motion. Enhancement factors for the monomer and polymer are determined to be 58 and 15, respectively. The title BODIHY polymer exhibited an earlier onset of AIE and enhanced sensitivity to solution viscosity when compared to the parent monomer.

An Open Access Data Set Highlighting Aggregation of Dyes on Metal Oxides

The adsorption of a dye to a metal oxide surface such as TiO2, NiO and ZnO leads to deprotonation and often undesirable aggregation of dye molecules, which in turn impacts the photophysical properties of the dye. While controlled aggregation is useful for some applications, it can result in lower performance for dye-sensitized solar cells. To understand this phenomenon better, we have conducted an extensive search of the literature and identified over 4000 records of absorption spectra in solution and after adsorption onto metal oxide. The total data set comprises over 3500 unique compounds, with observed absorption maxima in solution and after adsorption on the semiconductor electrode. This data may serve to provide further insight into the structure-property relationships governing dye-aggregation behaviour.

Synthesis, biological evaluation, theoretical investigations, docking study and ADME parameters of some 1,4-bisphenylhydrazone derivatives as potent antioxidant agents and acetylcholinesterase inhibitors

Five 1,4-bisphenylhydrazone derivatives (1-5) were successfully synthesized and evaluated for their antioxidant and acetylcholinesterase inhibitory activities. The antioxidant activity has been carried out using DPPH, ABTS, CUPRAC and superoxide radical scavenging methods. All the compounds showed a very good antioxidant activity compared to that of the standards used. Compound 1 was found to be the best antioxidant agent with IC₅₀ values lower or comparable to that of the standards. The acetylcholinesterase inhibitory activity has been evaluated using a modified Ellman's assay. The obtained results indicate that compound 2 is the best acetylcholinesterase inhibitor with a low IC₅₀ value comparable to that of the galantamine. In addition, DFT calculations have been performed to determine in which mechanism the synthesized hydrazones follow to scavenge free radicals. Molecular docking study was performed for compound 2, and its interaction modes with the enzyme acetylcholinesterase were determined. As a result, a strong interaction between this compound and the active site of AChE enzyme was revealed. Finally, ADME properties of the synthesized compounds were also studied and showed good drug-like properties.

Synthesis and Photophysical Behavior of a Highly Fluorescent Family of Unsymmetrical Organoboron Complexes Containing 5-(Pyridin-2-ylmethylene)imidazolidine-2,4-dione Moieties

A new and highly fluorescent family of unsymmetrical organoboron complexes containing 5-(pyridin-2-ylmethylene)imidazolidine-2,4-dione moieties has been synthesized in three steps. These compounds show strong absorptions covering a wide range of the UV-vis spectrum and are strongly emissive (ϕ_f of up to 0.92 in CH₃CN). Moreover, two fluorophores that include an alkyne or an azide group at the end of the alkyl chain and with potential utility in bioorthogonal chemistry have been developed. One of these, in which the glycol substituent provides an enhanced water solubility without compromising the fluorescence (ϕ_f = 0.85 in water), may be of particular importance.

Unprecedented green-emissive boranyl-hydrazone supramolecular assemblies and their in vitro diagnostic applications

This paper describes a novel symmetric N,N'-diethylsalicylaldehyde boranyl hydrazone (1) and its in situ-generated assemblies displaying opto-analytical capabilities for the diagnosis of nucleic acids under physiological conditions. The sensing capabilities of these unprecedented supramolecular assemblies were characterized using UV-Vis spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering, and zeta potential measurements. Model compounds lacking boranyl units (2, 3) were prepared to correlate and evaluate the sensing mechanism. The rationally designed probe 1 displays unusual aggregation-induced emissive (AIE) properties, with an average particle size of 1096 nm exhibiting green emission upon excitation at 377 nm in pH-7.2 TRIZMA buffer. A selective switch on response toward organic PO₄^3- accompanied through specific nano-aggregations patterns and sizes, thereby causing a significant red-shift through AIE. Exploiting such switch on in green channel behavior has allowed the monitoring of DNase I activities and polymerase chain reactions.
