Simultaneous Spin-Crossover Transition and Conductivity Switching in a Dinuclear Iron(II) Coordination Compound Based on 7,7',8,8'-Tetracyano-p-quinodimethane

Simultaneous magneto-dielectric transitions in a fluorescent Hofmann-type coordination polymer

The design of magnetic molecular materials exhibiting multiple functions has garnered significant interest owing to their potential applications in molecular switches, sensors, and data storage devices. In this study, we synthesized a two-dimensional (2D) FeII-based Hofmann-type coordination polymer, namely {Fe(DPPE)2[Ag(CN)2]2}·2EtOH (1), using a luminescent ligand 1,1-diphenyl-2,2-di(4-pyridylbiphenyl)ethylene (DPPE). Single-crystal structural analyses and magnetic measurements revealed a thermally induced spin crossover (SCO) with the transition temperature T1/2 = 231 K. Variable-temperature fluorescence emission spectra indicated the coexistence of spin crossover and fluorescence properties. Moreover, a pronounced dielectric change (Δε' = 1.2 at 0.5 kHz) was observed during the SCO process, confirming the simultaneous magnetic and dielectric switching arising from the rearrangement of 3d electrons and deformation of the FeII-centered coordination sphere. This work provides an approach to explore the interplay between magnetic, dielectric, and fluorescence properties, and holds significance for developing multifunctional molecular materials.

Investigation of the unique magnetic behaviours of isomers in a 1,2-dithiooxalato-bridged diiron(II) complex

1,2-Dithiooxalate (dto) can be employed as a bridging ligand and it exhibits symmetric (O,S-chelation) or asymmetric (O,O- and S,S-chelation) coordination forms. In this study, we prepared a novel dto-bridged diiron(II) complex, [{Fe(TPA)}2(μ-dto)](ClO4)2 (1), where TPA is tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine. Interestingly, the bridging dto ligand exhibited not only the asymmetric form but also a linkage isomer and a diastereomer within the same crystal. Notably, the three isomers of 1 exhibited different magnetic properties, resulting in a multi-step spin crossover behaviour.

Electronic structure of cobalt valence tautomeric molecules in different environments

Future molecular microelectronics require the electronic conductivity of the device to be tunable without impairing the voltage control of the molecular electronic properties. This work reports the influence of an interface between a semiconducting polyaniline polymer or a polar poly-D-lysine molecular film and one of two valence tautomeric complexes, i.e., [Co^III(SQ)(Cat)(4-CN-py)₂] ↔ [Co^II(SQ)₂(4-CN-py)₂] and [Co^III(SQ)(Cat)(3-tpp)₂] ↔ [Co^II(SQ)₂(3-tpp)₂]. The electronic transitions and orbitals are identified using X-ray photoemission, X-ray absorption, inverse photoemission, and optical absorption spectroscopy measurements that are guided by density functional theory. Except for slightly modified binding energies and shifted orbital levels, the choice of the underlying substrate layer has little effect on the electronic structure. A prominent unoccupied ligand-to-metal charge transfer state exists in [Co^III(SQ)(Cat)(3-tpp)₂] ↔ [Co^II(SQ)₂(3-tpp)₂] that is virtually insensitive to the interface between the polymer and tautomeric complexes in the Co^II high-spin state.

Spin-Crossover in Supramolecular Iron(II)-2,6-bis(1H-Pyrazol-1-yl)pyridine Complexes: Toward Spin-State Switchable Single-Molecule Junctions

Spin-crossover (SCO) active iron(II) complexes are an integral class of switchable and bistable molecular materials. Spin-state switching properties of the SCO complexes have been studied in the bulk and single-molecule levels to progress toward fabricating molecule-based switching and memory elements. Supramolecular SCO complexes featuring anchoring groups for metallic electrodes, for example, gold (Au), are ideal candidates to study spin-state switching at the single-molecule level. In this study, we report on the spin-state switching characteristics of supramolecular iron(II) complexes 1 and 2 composed of functional 4-([2,2'-bithiophen]-5-ylethynyl)-2,6-di(1H-pyrazol-1-yl)pyridine (L1) and 4-(2-(5-(5-hexylthiophen-2-yl)thiophen-2-yl)ethynyl)-2,6-di(1H-pyrazol-1-yl)pyridine (L2) ligands, respectively. Density functional theory (DFT) studies revealed stretching-induced spin-state switching in a molecular junction composed of complex 1, taken as a representative example, and gold electrodes. Single-molecule conductance traces revealed the unfavorable orientation of the complexes in the junctions to demonstrate the spin-state dependence of the conductance.

Spin-Crossover-Triggered Linkage Isomerization by the Pedal-like Motion of the Azobenzene Ligand in a Neutral Heteroleptic Iron(III) Complex

The temperature dependence of magnetic susceptibility of [Fe^III(azp)(qsal-Me)]·0.5CH₃OH [Hqsal-Me = 5-methyl-N-(8-quinoyl)salicylaldimine, H₂azp = 2,2'-azobisphenol] demonstrated that the spin-crossover (SCO) transition behavior changed from an abrupt transition to consecutive gradual conversions, and moreover, the initial abrupt transition was recovered, keeping the complex at room temperature. The variable-temperature crystal structures revealed that an SCO-triggered linkage isomerization of the azobenzene ligand from one orientation to two disordered orientations and the relaxation from the disordered orientations to the original orientation occurred. The high-spin to low-spin relaxation kinetics and theoretical calculation indicate that the pedal-like motion of the azobenzene ligand can be on in the high-spin state whereas off in the low-spin state.
