Abstract
To further explore the relationship between aryl substituents and mechanofluorochromic (MFC) behaviors, four salicylaldimine-based difluoroboron complexes (ts-Ph BF2, ts-Ph-NA BF2, ts-2NA BF2, and ts-triphenylamine [TPA] BF2), including aromatic substituents with different steric hindrance effects, were designed and successfully synthesized. Four complexes with twisted molecular conformation displayed intramolecular charge transfer and aggregation-induced emission properties. Under external mechanical stimuli, the as-synthesized powders of ts-Ph BF2, ts-Ph-NA BF2, and ts-TPA BF2 exhibited redshift fluorescence emission behaviors, and ts-Ph BF2 and ts-TPA BF2 could be recovered to original shifts by fuming, but ts-Ph-NA BF2 displayed irreversible switching. ts-2NA BF2 had no change during the grinding and fuming processes. The results indicated that the MFC behaviors could be attributed to the phase transformation between the well-defined crystalline and disordered amorphous states by X-ray diffraction measurement. Further research illustrated that ts-TPA BF2 with the most significant MFC phenomenon could be applied in data security protection in ink-free rewritable paper.

Abstract
Dual-state emission luminogens (DSEgens), as a new type of luminescent materials that can effectively emit light in solution and solid state, have attracted tremendous attention due to their potential application in chemical sensing, biological imaging, organic electronic devices, etc. In this study, two new rofecoxib derivatives ROIN and ROIN-B have been synthesized, and their photophysical properties are fully investigated by experimental studies and theoretical calculations. The key intermediate ROIN, resulting from one-step conjugation of rofecoxib with an indole unit, shows the classical aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) effect. Meanwhile, by introducing a tert-butoxycarbonyl (Boc) group on the basis of ROIN without enlarging the π conjugation system, ROIN-B was successfully developed with an obvious DSE property. In addition, both fluorescent behaviors and their transformation from ACQ to DSE were elucidated clearly by going through the analysis of their single X-ray data. Moreover, the target ROIN-B, as a new DSEgens, also displays reversible mechanofluorochromism and lipid droplet-specific imaging ability in HeLa cells. Taken together, this work proposes a precise molecular design strategy to afford a new DSEgens, which may provide guidance for the future exploration of new DSEgens.

Abstract
In recent years, organic mechanofluorochromism (MFC) materials have attracted wide attention in many fields. However, the exploration of MFC materials with high-contrast, high-sensitivity and high-responsiveness remains a challenge. Herein, a series of MFC materials with 2-biarylyl cinchoninic acid skeleton were successfully established, which are based on interconversion of classical/ frustrated Brönsted pairs. These compounds have the mechanochromic shift of up to 115 nm, as well as the property of stunning sensitivity and multiple responses to external mechanical force stimuli. The luminescence properties can be easily tuned by changing the substituents.

Abstract
Pyridine coupled bisbenzimidazole probe has been developed for colorimetric sensing of heavy metal pollutants in the aqueous medium. Mechanistic investigation indicates that Hg2+ ions (detection limit: 7.5 ppb) bind to the pyridyl nitrogen ends and form linear supramolecular assembly. Red-shifted absorption and fluorescence maxima upon addition of Hg2+ ions were observed, presumably caused by charge transfer interaction and coordination-driven planarization of the biphenyl backbone. Additionally, the in-situ formed mercury complex was utilized for selective recognition of iodide ion (detection limit: 20.2 ppb). Considering its high sensitivity, the present system was utilized in analysing Hg2+ in natural water and in presence of albumin protein. The high recovery values ranging from 95 to 98% with substantially low relative standard deviation (<4%) confirm the suitability of the present method in estimating trace-level of Hg2+ even in real-life samples. Imaging of intracellular Hg2+ ion was also achieved in cervical cancer cells. Low-cost paper strips are designed for rapid, on-site detection of Hg2+ without engaging any sophisticated analytical tools or trained personnel.

Abstract
In this work, we first designed and synthesized tetraphenylene-fused aryl-imidazole derivatives TM-1-4 via regulation of molecular structure, which were consisted of 1H-imidazo[4,5-f][1,10]phenanthroline, 1H-phenanthro[9,10-d]imidazole, 4,5-diphenyl-1H-imidazole, 3,3'-(1H-imidazole-4,5-diyl)dipyridine moieties and AIE-active tetraphenylethene units, respectively. The results illustrated that TM-1-4 exhibited clear AIE characteristics. Meanwhile, TM-2 and TM-3 show excellent solid emission properties (ΦTM-2 =13.73 % and ΦTM-3 =36.21 %), whereas TM-1 and TM-4 exhibit the opposite properties (ΦTM-1 =1.48 % and ΦTM-4 =4.83 %). The multiple rotors (pyridine and benzene ring) causes twisted conformations of the molecule that prevents π-π stacking and enhances solid emission(ΦTM-2<ΦTM-3, ΦTM-1<ΦTM-4). Significantly, TM-2 and TM-3 also exhibited reversible mechanochromic behavior (Emission red shifts: ΔλTM-2 =43 nm and ΔλTM-3 =41 nm) with color changes between blue and green emissions. The powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) suggested the disordered state of ground sample could be readily returned to an ordered crystalline. Therefore, the mechanochromisms of TM-2 and TM-3 are ascribable to the phase transformation between crystal and amorphous structure. The single crystal X-ray analysis of TM-2 reveals a twisted conformation for TPE moiety and the absence of π-π intermolecular stacking. These excellent optical properties of TM-2 and TM-3 make them potentially applications in mechanochromic materials and imaging agents.

Abstract
A practicable strategy to a reversible mechanochromic material featuring interconversion of classical/frustrated Brönsted pairs has been established. We report the mechanochromic property of 2,6-bis(4-biphenyl)isonicotinic acid (1), which features a frustrated Brönsted pair in the crystalline form and a classical Brönsted pair after grinding. A large mechanochromic shift was found from 428 to 505 nm. In addition, compound 1 also exhibits acidochromic behavior, which further proves that the formation of an acid-base interaction is responsible for the mechanochromic phenomenon.
